As an environmentally friendly natural polymer, citric acid-modified chitosan (CAMC) can effectively regulate the hydration and exothermic processes of cement-based materials. However, the influence of CAMC on the macroscopic properties of concrete and the optimal dosage are still unclear. This work systematically investigates the effects of CAMC on the mixing performance, mechanical properties, shrinkage performance, and durability of concrete. The results indicated that CAMC has a thickening effect and prolongs the setting time of concrete. CAMC has a negative impact on the early strength of concrete, but it is beneficial for the development of the subsequent strength of concrete. With the increase in CAMC content, the self-shrinkage rate of concrete samples decreased from 86.82 to 14.52 με. However, the CAMC-0.6% sample eventually expanded, with an expansion value of 78.49 με. Moreover, the long-term drying shrinkage rate was decreased from 551.46 to 401.94 με. Furthermore, low-dose CAMC can significantly reduce the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions, improve the impermeability and density of concrete, and thereby enhance the freeze–thaw cycle resistance of concrete. The use of phase change materials (PCMs) in concrete is a double-edged sword that improves the thermal inertia but degrades the mechanical properties of concrete. It has been an essential but unsolved issue to enhance the thermal capacity of PCMs while non-decreasing their mechanical strength. To this end, this work designs a novel 3D printing phase change aggregate to prepare concrete with prominent thermal capacity and ductility. The work investigated the effects of 3D printing phase change aggregate on the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete. The compressive strength of phase change aggregate concrete is 21.18 MPa, but the ductility of concrete improves. The splitting tensile strength was 1.45 MPa. The peak strain is 11.69 × 10−3, nearly 13 times that of basalt aggregate concrete. Moreover, using 3D printing phase change aggregate reduced concrete's early peak hydration temperature by 7.1%. The thermal insulation capacity of the experiment cube model with phase change concrete has been improved. The results show that the novel 3D printing change aggregate concrete has good mechanical properties and latent heat storage, providing a guideline for applying PCMs in building materials. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has received increasing attention in recent years due to its remarkable ductility, durability, and mechanical properties. However, the manufacture of UHPC can cause serious environmental issues. This work addresses the feasibility of using aeolian sand to produce UHPC, and the mix design, environmental impact, and mechanical characterization of UHPC are investigated. We designed the mix proportions of the UHPC according to the modified Andreasen and Andersen particle packing model. We studied the workability, microstructure, porosity, mechanical performance, and environmental impact of UHPC with three different water/binder ratios. The following findings were noted: (1) the compressive strength, flexural strength, and Young's modulus of the designed UHPC samples were in the ranges of 163.9–207.0 MPa, 18.0–32.2 MPa, and 49.3–58.9 GPa, respectively; (2) the compressive strength, flexural strength, and Young's modulus of the UHPC increased with a decrease in water/binder ratio and an increase in the steel fibre content; (3) the compressive strength–Young's modulus correlation of the UHPC could be described by an exponential formula; (4) the environmental impact of UHPC can be improved by decreasing its water/binder ratio. These findings suggest that it is possible to use aeolian sand to manufacture UHPC, and this study promotes the application of aeolian sand for this purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The redox pretreatment of samples is one of the crucial ways of altering the catalytic properties of the supported noble metal materials in many heterogeneous reactions. Here, H2-reducing pretreatment is reported to enhance the thermal stability of Au-CeO2 catalysts prepared by the deposition–precipitation method and calcination at 600 °C for CO oxidation. In order to understand the improved activity and thermal stability, a series of techniques were used to characterize the physico-chemical changes of the catalyst samples. H2 pretreatment may lead to: (i) a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) between Au nanoparticles (NPs) and CeO2, evidenced by the particular coverage of Au NPs by CeO2, electronic interactions and CO adsorption changes. (ii) the production of surface bicarbonates which can accelerate CO oxidation. As a result, the H2 pretreatment makes the Au NPs more resistant to sintering at high temperature and enhances the CO oxidation activity. Furthermore, this reduction pretreatment strategy may provide a potential approach to enhance the thermal-stability of other supported noble metal catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel active Ca-Co dually-doping pyrochlore oxide La2−xCaxSn2−yCoyO7 catalyst was synthesized by the sol-gel method for catalytic oxidation of soot particulates. The microstructure, atomic valence, reduction, and adsorption performance were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2-TPR (temperature-programmed reduction), and in situ diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transformed (DRIFTS) techniques. Temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) tests were performed with the mixture of soot-catalyst under tight contact conditions to evaluate the catalytic activity for soot combustion. Synergetic effect between Ca and Co improved the structure and redox properties of the solids, increased the surface oxygen vacancies, and provided a suitable electropositivity for oxide, directly resulting in the decreased ignition temperature for catalyzed soot oxidation as low as 317 °C. The presence of NO in O2 further promoted soot oxidation over the catalysts with the ignition temperature decreased to about 300 °C. The DRIFTS results reveal that decomposition of less stable surface nitrites may account for NO2 formation in the ignition period of soot combustion, which thus participate in the auxiliary combustion process.
