Thermoelectric materials that can convert thermal energy to electrical energy are stable and long-lasting and do not emit greenhouse gases; these properties render them useful in novel power generation devices that can conserve and utilize lost heat. SiC exhibits good mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. It can withstand elevated temperatures and thermal shock and is well suited for thermoelectric conversions in high-temperature and harsh environments, such as supersonic vehicles and rockets. This paper reviews the potential of SiC as a high-temperature thermoelectric and third-generation wide-bandgap semiconductor material. Recent research on SiC thermoelectric materials is reviewed, and the principles and methods for optimizing the thermoelectric properties of SiC are discussed. A novel UV-light-curable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate matrix composite material with unmodified and methacryloxyl-grafted TiO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 systems was developed and tested as a potential coating material for medical components. The main goal of the research was to evaluate how the addition of (un)modified inorganic oxide fillers affects the properties of the composition (viscosity, UV/Vis spectra), the kinetics of photocuring (photo-DSC), and the morphological (SEM), physicochemical, and thermal properties (DSC, TGA) of the resulting composites. The applied filler functionalization process decreased their polarity and changed their size, BET surface area, and pore volume, which influenced the viscosity and kinetics of the photocurable system. In addition, the addition of synthesized fillers reduced the polymer's glass transition temperature and increased its thermal stability. It was also observed that additional UV irradiation of the tested composite changed its surface, resulting in hydrophobic properties (with the addition of 7 wt.% filler, an increase in the contact angle by more than 45% was observed). Titanium implants undergo an aging process through surface hydrocarbon deposition, resulting in decreased wettability and bioactivity. Plasma treatment was shown to significantly reduce surface hydrocarbons, thus improving implant hydrophilicity and enhancing the osseointegration process. This study investigates the effect of plasma surface treatment on bone-to-implant contact (BIC) of implants presenting a nanostructured calcium-incorporated surface (XPEED®). Following a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design, patients undergoing implant surgery in the posterior maxilla received additional plasma-treated (n = 7) or -untreated (n = 5) 3.5 × 8 mm implants that were retrieved after a 4-week healing period for histological examination. Histomorphometric analysis showed that plasma-treated implants exhibited a 38.7% BIC rate compared to 22.4% of untreated implants (p = 0.002), indicating enhanced osseointegration potential. Histological images also revealed increased bone formation and active osteoblastic activity around plasma-treated implants when compared to untreated specimens. The findings suggest that plasma treatment improves surface hydrophilicity and biological response, facilitating early bone formation around titanium implants. This study underscores the importance of surface modifications in optimizing implant integration and supports the use of plasma treatment to enhance osseointegration, thereby improving clinical outcomes in implant dentistry and offering benefits for immediate and early loading protocols, particularly in soft bone conditions. The adhesion of zirconia and soft tissue is very important for the success of zirconia implants. The aim of this study was to characterize the effects of excimer laser treatment of zirconia on the adhesion of L929 fibroblasts. In this study, polished zirconia disks treated with an excimer laser were the experimental group and untreated zirconia disks were the control group. Surface roughness and contact angles of zirconia disks were measured. mRNA expression levels of integrin β1 and collagen type I α1 in L929 fibroblasts cultured on zirconia disks were measured using qRT-PCR. Cell morphology was evaluated using 3D laser microscopy and the expression of vinculin was characterized using confocal microscopy. There was no significant difference in the surface roughness of zirconia disks, but contact angles were significantly lower. mRNA expression of integrin β1 was significantly higher at 3, 6 and 24 h and of collagen type I α1 was significantly higher at 6 and 24 h. L929 fibroblasts tended to form elongated microspikes and vinculin colocalization in those microspikes. Furthermore, vinculin was strongly expressed in filopodia of L929 fibroblasts at 24 h. This article presents studies on the ammonium fluoride processing of dusts from the reduction smelting of ilmenite concentrate with separation of silicon to obtain titanium dioxide. Optimal conditions for pyrohydrolysis of titanium fluorides were determined. The effects of temperature and duration on the process were studied. The optimal conditions for pyrohydrolysis of titanium fluorides were a temperature of 600 °C and duration of 240–300 min. The degree of titanium fluoride conversion to titanium oxide was 99.5% at these conditions. Titanium dioxide obtained by pyrohydrolysis of titanium fluorides was purified from iron, chromium, and manganese impurities. The effect of hydrochloric acid solution concentration, S:L ratio, and the process duration on the purification degree of titanium fluoride pyrohydrolysis was studied. The following optimum purification conditions were determined: hydrochloric acid solution concentration 12.5–15 wt%, temperature 25–30 °C, S:L = 1:6÷8, duration 20–30 min. The purified titanium dioxide consisted mainly of anatase. The pigmented titanium dioxide of rutile modification with 99.8 wt% TiO2 was obtained after calcination at 900 °C for 120 min. Traditional antimicrobial methods, such as antibiotics and disinfectants, may cause adverse effects, such as bacterial resistance and allergic reactions. Photocatalysts based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) have shown great potential in the field of antimicrobials because of their high efficiency, lack of pollution, and lack of side effects. This paper focuses on the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 under different light sources. To improve the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2, we can reduce electron-hole recombination and extend the photocatalytic activity to the visible light region by doping with different ions or compounds and compounding with polymers. We can also improve the surface properties of materials, increase the contact area with microorganisms, and further enhance the resistance to microorganisms. In addition, we also reviewed their main synthesis methods, related mechanisms, and main application fields to provide new ideas for the enhancement of photocatalytic microorganism performance and application popularization in the future. Objective: Improvements in the bioactivity of zirconia implants for accelerated healing and reduced morbidity have been of continuing interest in the fields of dentistry and orthopedic surgery. The aim of the present study was to examine whether UV treatment increases the osteoconductivity of zirconia-based materials. Materials and Methods: Smooth and rough zirconia-based disks and cylindrical implants were treated with UV light for 15 min and subsequently placed in rat femurs. Surface characterization was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements. Results: In vivo histomorphometry revealed that the percentage of bone-implant contact and the amount of bone volume, formed around UV-treated implants, increased by 3-7-fold for smooth surfaces and by 1.4-1.7-fold for rough surfaces compared to non-treated specimens at Weeks 2 and 4 of healing, respectively. A biomechanical test showed that UV treatment accelerated the establishment of bone-zirconia integration and enhanced the strength of the bone-implant interface by two-fold. Additionally, surface characterization of the zirconia disks revealed that UV treatment decreased the amount of surface carbon and converted the hydrophilic status from hydrophobic to superhydrophilic. Multifuntional fabrics with special wettability have attracted a lot of interest in both fundamental research and industry applications over the last two decades. In this review, recent progress of various kinds of approaches and strategies to construct super-antiwetting coating on cellulose-based substrates (fabrics and paper) has been discussed in detail. We focus on the significant applications related to artificial superhydrophobic fabrics with special wettability and controllable adhesion, e.g., oil-water separation, self-cleaning, asymmetric/anisotropic wetting for microfluidic manipulation, air/liquid directional gating, and micro-template for patterning. In addition to the anti-wetting properties and promising applications, particular attention is paid to coating durability and other incorporated functionalities, e.g., air permeability, UV-shielding, photocatalytic self-cleaning, self-healing and patterned antiwetting properties. Metal oxide nanotubes have become a widely investigated material, more specifically, self-organized titania nanotube arrays synthesized by electrochemical anodization. As a highly investigated material with a wide gamut of applications, the majority of published literature focuses on the solar-based applications of this material. The scope of this review summarizes some of the recent advances made using metal oxide nanotube arrays formed via anodization in solar-based applications. One important recent trend in deposition technology is the continuous expansion of available processes towards higher ion assistance with the subsequent beneficial effects to film properties. Nowadays, a multitude of processes, including laser ablation and deposition, vacuum arc deposition, ion assisted deposition, high power impulse magnetron sputtering and plasma immersion ion implantation, are available. However, there are obstacles to overcome in all technologies, including line-of-sight processes, particle contaminations and low growth rates, which lead to ongoing process refinements and development of new methods. Concerning the deposited thin films, control of energetic ion bombardment leads to improved adhesion, reduced substrate temperatures, control of intrinsic stress within the films as well as adjustment of surface texture, phase formation and nanotopography. Poly(acrylic acid-co-allyl acrylate) statistical copolymers were synthesized in a controlled manner in two steps: first tert.butyl acrylate and allyl acrylate were polymerized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and afterwords the tert.butyl protective groups were removed via hydrolysis. Samples of self cleaning glass (SCG) were coated with thin films of poly(acrylic acid-co-allyl acrylate) and cross-linked afterwards by UV irradiation (in the presence of a photoinitiator and an accelerator). Solution cast thin films were transparent and homogeneous before and after UV cross-linking. The irradiated samples were found to be hydrophilic (Θ < 20°) and water insoluble. The coating prevented the spontaneous hydrophobization of the SCG by residual silicon exhaled from the sealing material. The TiO2 photocatalyst that covers the glass surface was found to strip the protective coating. The rate of the photooxidation process was measured by IR spectroscopy. This review summarizes recent progress on the synthetic fabrication of transition metal sulfides nanocrystals with controlled shape, size, and surface functionality. Special attention is paid to the case of MoS2 nanoparticles, where organic (surfactant, polymer), inorganic (support, promoter, doping) compounds and intercalation chemistry are applied. The development of mold films on the cement surfaces of buildings is a health and safety problem for the population, aesthetic but also in terms of their durability. The use of specific performance of cementitious composites containing TiO2 nanoparticles, photoactivated by UV radiation, can be a viable solution to mitigate to eliminate these problems. The experimental studies presented aim to analyze the capacity to inhibit the development of mold type Aspergillus and Penicillium on the surface of composite materials with nano-TiO2 content and the identification of the optimal range of nanomaterial addition. The identification and analysis of the inhibition halo (zone with a biological load of maximum 1–10 colonies of microorganisms) confirmed the biocidal capacity of the cementitious composites, but also indicated the possibility that an excess of TiO2 nanoparticles in the mixture could induce a development of cell resistance, which would be unfavorable both in terms of behavior and in terms of cost. In this study, we prepared a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-linking polyamide (POSS polyamide) by a polycondensation of ammonium-functionalized POSS (POSS-A) and carboxyl-functionalized POSS (POSS-C) in dehydrated dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as condensing agents. The obtained POSS polyamide was soluble in various highly polar solvents, and it could form a self-standing film. FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 29Si NMR analyses showed that POSS polyamide is a polymer in which POSS-A and POSS-C are linked almost linearly by amide bonds. Furthermore, the cast film obtained by heat-treating the polymer at 150 °C for 30 min exhibited excellent transparency and hard-coating (pencil scratch test: 5H) and antifogging properties (evaluation by water vapor exposure). Osseointegration of titanium implant is important for the success of both dental and medical implants. Previous studies have attempted to improve osseointegration by considering the use of plasma jet technology, where information with animal models and parameters related to osseointegration is still lacking. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet (NTAPPJ) treatment on titanium implants in terms of osseointegration in mongrel dogs. A total of 41 implants; 21 NTAPPJ treated and 20 control, were placed in the maxilla and mandible of six mongrel dogs for either 4 or 8 weeks. The bone volume (BV) and bone-to-implant contact (BIC) ratio were determined by region of interest (ROI). Statistical analysis was performed with the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. The NTAPPJ group at 4 weeks showed higher numbers in both BV and BIC (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. However, at 8 weeks there were less significant differences between the control or experimental group as the control group had caught up with the experimental group. Hence, NTAPPJ may be an effective treatment for the initial healing period which is critical to ensure reliable long-term predictability. An AISI 316L surface was functionalized by the adsorption of hydrophilic epoxy and epoxy/TiO2/epoxy coatings and hydrophobic epoxy/fluoroalkylsilane-functionalized FAS-TiO2/epoxy coatings. We characterized the coatings' wettability, morphology and average surface roughness and discussed the influence of surface wettability and morphology on the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance. Experiments were performed in dry, distilled water and in a simulated physiological solution (Hank's solution). In the case of dry sliding, a lower coefficient of friction is achieved for both TiO2 coatings compared to the pure epoxy coating. In a water environment the same level of friction is shown for all three coatings, whereas in Hank's solution the friction is reduced for the hydrophilic epoxy/TiO2/epoxy coating, increased for the hydrophobic epoxy/FAS-TiO2/epoxy coating and has no effect on the pure epoxy coating. The results show that the corrosion resistance is significantly improved for the hydrophobic epoxy/FAS-TiO2/epoxy coating compared to the hydrophilic pure epoxy and epoxy/TiO2/epoxy coatings. This review paper describes several recent modification methods for biocompatible titanium dental implant surfaces. The micro-roughened surfaces reviewed in the literature are sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched, and anodically oxidized. These globally-used surfaces have been clinically investigated, showing survival rates higher than 95%. In the past, dental clinicians believed that eukaryotic cells for osteogenesis did not recognize the changes of the nanostructures of dental implant surfaces. However, research findings have recently shown that osteogenic cells respond to chemical and morphological changes at a nanoscale on the surfaces, including titanium dioxide nanotube arrangements, functional peptide coatings, fluoride treatments, calcium–phosphorus applications, and ultraviolet photofunctionalization. Some of the nano-level modifications have not yet been clinically evaluated. However, these modified dental implant surfaces at the nanoscale have shown excellent in vitro and in vivo results, and thus promising potential future clinical use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultraviolet (UV) photofunctionalization has been suggested as an effective method to enhance the osseointegration of titanium surface. In this study, machined surface treated with UV light (M + UV) was compared to sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) surface through in vitro and in vivo studies. Groups of titanium specimens were defined as machined (M), SLA, and M + UV for the disc type, and M + UV and SLA for the implant. The discs and implants were assessed using scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and the contact angle. Additionally, we evaluated the cell attachment, proliferation assay, and real-time polymerase chain reaction for the MC3T3-E1 cells. In a rabbit tibia model, the implants were examined to evaluate the bone-to-implant contact ratio and the bone area. In the M + UV group, we observed the lower amount of carbon, a 0°-degree contact angle, and enhanced osteogenic cell activities (p < 0.05). The histomorphometric analysis showed that a higher bone-to-implant contact ratio was found in the M + UV implant at 10 days (p < 0.05). Emerging pollutants are an essential class of recalcitrant contaminants that are not eliminated from water after conventional treatment. Here, a photocatalytic microporous membrane based on polyvinylidene difluoride-co-trifluoroethylene (PVDF−TrFE) with immobilised TiO2 nanoparticles, prepared by solvent casting, was tested against representative emerging pollutants. The structure and composition of these polymeric membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, porosimetry, and contact angle goniometry. The nanocomposites exhibited a porous structure with a uniform distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles. The addition of TiO2 did not change the structure of the polymeric matrix; however, it increased the wettability of the nanocomposite. The nanocomposites degraded 99% of methylene blue (MB), 95% of ciprofloxacin (CIP), and 48% of ibuprofen (IBP). The microporous nanocomposite exhibited no photocatalytic efficiency loss after four use cycles, corresponding to 20 h of UV irradiation. The reusability of this system confirms the promising nature of polymer nanocomposites as the basis for cost-effective and scalable treatments of emerging pollutants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, HBP-NH2-modified titania nanowire (TiO2NWS)-decorated Au nanoparticles (TiO2NWS@AuNPS) were synthesized by one-step method. The role of HBP-NH2 concentration in the formation of TiO2NWS was investigated. The fineness and uniformity of pure TiO2NWS were enhanced by absorbed amino groups from amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HBP-NH2). The morphology and crystal structure of TiO2NWS and TiO2NWS@AuNPS were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fournier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The chemical states of gold, titanium and oxygen were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that at the concentration of HBP-NH2 100 g/L, the mean diameter of TiO2NWS was nearly 72 nm and Au nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of TiO2NWS. The presence of AuNPS improved the photocatalytic properties of TiO2NWS under UV light irradiation. The Au load was believed to improve the utilization rate of the photoelectron and activated the adsorbed oxygen. The obtained TiO2NWS@AuNPS decomposed 99.6% methylene blue (MB) after 300 min when subjected to UV light irradiation. After five cycles of the catalyzing process, the TiO2NWS@AuNPS still retained over 90% of its catalytic ability for MB.
