Regulating the phase ratio between austenite and ferrite in welded joints is crucial for welding super duplex stainless steel. Nitrogen plays a significant role in maintaining an optimal phase ratio. In this study, the focusing gas channel of gas-focused plasma arc welding was utilized to introduce nitrogen into the arc plasma, which was then transferred to the weld pool. Experiments with and without nitrogen addition were designed and conducted to examine the effects of nitrogen on the microstructure and properties of SDSS 2507 weld joints. The results show that nitrogen addition increased the austenite content in the weld metal from 22.2% to 40.2%. Nitrogen also altered the microstructure of the austenite, changing it from thin grain boundary austenite and small intragranular austenite to a large volume of coarse, side-plate Widmanstätten austenite. The ferrite in the weld metal exhibited a preferred orientation during growth, while the austenite showed a disordered orientation. Additionally, the maximum texture intensity of the ferrite decreased with nitrogen addition. Nitrogen addition led to an increase in the microhardness of the austenite in the weld metal, attributed to the solid solution strengthening effect of nitrogen and increased dislocation tangling, while it decreased the microhardness of the ferrite. Laser welding was performed using different filler wires, ER70S steel, commercially pure iron, and pure nickel filler, in the context of welding X80 pipeline steel to assess the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld metal. Introducing an ER70S wire promoted acicular ferrite formation in the fusion zone, compared to a bainitic microstructure in an autogenous laser weld. The use of pure iron wire was considered as a potential strategy for reducing hardenability, as it led to the dilution of alloying elements in the fusion zone, increasing ferrite content and reducing weld metal hardness to a level compliant with API pipeline standards. The addition of pure nickel wire was used to reveal the degree of weld metal mixing imposed by the laser (thus providing an unambiguous tracer element) when it is combined with filler material dilution in the fusion zone, revealing that the upper region contained 38% wire material and the lower region only 12%. This accounts for the differences observed between the upper versus lower portions of the weld metal when other wires are used, and the use of hardness mapping and micro-indentation demonstrates the correlation between the variations in mechanical properties and microstructural differences introduced by incomplete mixing of the filler wire elements. As a result of the thermo-mechanical impact during welding, distortions are generated in welded structures. These distortions significantly influence the geometric and dimensional accuracy of welded structures, in many cases lowering their working characteristics and reliability. An optimal design for welded structures is a prerequisite for increased reliability and reduction in manufacturing cost, and such an optimal design can be achieved knowing the distortions in weldments. Despite the fact that pulsed metal inert gas welding and metal active gas welding have been broadly applied in the last few decades, nowadays, few manufacturers, for instance, Fronius, EWM, Redco, and Perfect Power Welders, offer such an option for manual arc welding. This work aims to determine the influence of the parameters of pulsed welding modes on distortions that are generated during manual arc welding. Two different inverter welding power sources were used, and the welding distortions were measured by 3D scanning. The results showed that the pulsed mode during manual arc welding led to a reduction in distortions compared to the conventional welding mode. Titanium and titanium alloys with a medium thickness of 5 to 12 mm are widely used for ocean platforms, military equipment and in other fields because of their light weight, appropriate strength and corrosion resistance. In this study, autogenous laser welding and narrow-gap laser welding processes were researched and compared, and the welding characteristics, weld microstructure and joint strength were analyzed. The results showed that autogenous laser welding had higher efficiency, narrower weld width and higher microstructure uniformity. Autogenous laser welding can achieve the single pass weld penetration at laser keyhole mode. The weld width of narrow-gap laser welded joint was 12.5 mm, which was nearly three times than that of autogenous laser welding. The grain size of autogenous laser welding was obviously smaller and more uniform in depth than that of narrow-gap laser welding. In the weld zone, the coarse columnar α grains grew from the fusion line, while in the heat-affected zone, equiaxed α grains with needle and sawtooth α morphologies were presented. The microhardness of the heat-affected zone was higher than in the weld zone and the base metal due to the denser needle microstructure. The widespread adoption of arc additive manufacturing techniques across various industries has advanced the field of SS316L stainless steel manufacturing. It is crucial to acknowledge that different welding modes exert distinct influences on the forming and mechanical performance. This study analyzed the thermal input associated with four specific welding modes in LORCH MIG welding, clarifying the transition dynamics of molten droplets through waveform analysis and examining the resultant effects on microstructure and performance characteristics. The Pulse, Speed-Pulse-XT, and Twin-Pulse modes were found to induce spatter during the manufacturing process, consequently reducing molding efficiency in comparison to the SA-XT mode. Notably, the Twin-Pulse mode, characterized by double-pulse agitation, generated fish scale patterns along the lateral surfaces of the fabricated parts, promoting anisotropic grain growth. This microstructural refinement, compared to single-pulse samples with equivalent thermal input, resulted in enhanced mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the horizontal tensile strength of the three pulse modes was lower than the industrial standard for SA-XT mode and forging. In contrast, the SA-XT mode with an average hardness of 168.1 ± 6.9 HV and a tensile strength of 443.58 ± 5.7 MPa. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the HFMI (high-frequency mechanical impact) treatment of each weld bead on the properties of a butt joint with a ceramic backing welded by robotic method 135 (MAG—metal active gas welding method) and to determine the effect of HMFI on the stress level. This analysis was based on a comparison of three butt joints made of a S690QL plate, in the as-welded condition, with the HFMI of each bead and with the heat treatment carried out with PWHT stress relief annealing. The high-frequency (90 Hz) peening of each weld bead was linked with a stress reduction in the weld via the implementation of compressive stresses into the joint. The HFMI pneumatic hammer was used for this. The correctness of treatment was achieved when 100% of the surface of each bead including the face was treated. As part of the post-welding tests, basic tests were carried out based on the standards for the qualification of welding technology, and as a supplementary test, a stress state analysis using the Barkhausen effect was carried out. The tests carried out showed that the use of high-frequency peening after each pass did not affect the negative results of all the required tests when qualifying the welding technology of S690QL sheet metal compared to the test plates in the as-welded condition and after heat treatment—stress relief annealing. Inter-pass peening of the welded face and HAZ (heat-affected zone) resulted in a reduction in post-weld residual stresses at a distance of 12 mm from the joint axis compared to the stress measurement result for the sample in the as-welded condition. This allowed for a positive assessment of peening in the context of reducing the notch, which is the concentration of tensile stresses in the area of the fusion line and HAZ. The tests carried out showed that the peening process does not reduce the strength properties of welded joints, and the results obtained allow the technology to be qualified based on applicable standards. This article proposes as a novelty the differentiation of shielding-gas flow rates from both sides of the tungsten inert gas (TIG)-welded butt joints of commercially pure (CP) grade 1 titanium tubes. Such an approach is aimed at economically reducing the amount of protective gas used in TIG closed butt welding. The effect of the shielding-gas flow rate on the properties of CP grade 1 titanium butt-welded joints made using the tungsten inert gas (TIG)-welding method. Butt-welded joints were made for different values of the shielding-gas flow from the side of the root of the weld. Argon 5.0 was used as the shielding gas in the welding process. As part of the research, the welded joints obtained were analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructural characteristics of the joints were examined using an optical microscope, and the mechanical properties were determined using hardness and tensile tests. It was observed that as the flow of the shielding gas decreases, the hardness of the weld material increases and its brittleness also increases. A similar trend related to the amount of gas flow was also noticeable for the tensile strength of the joints. The increase in the hardness of the weld and the heat-affected zone compared to the base metal is mainly related to the increase in the amount of acicular structure (α′ phase). This work is devoted to the study of the processes that take place in the welding gap during explosive welding (EW). In the welding gap, when plates collide, a shock-compressed gas (SCG) region is formed, which moves at supersonic speed and has a high temperature that can affect the quality of the weld joint. Therefore, this work focuses on a detailed study of the parameters of the SCG. A complex method of determining the SCG parameters included: determination of the detonation velocity using electrical contact probes, ceramic probes, and an oscilloscope; calculation of the SCG parameters; high-speed photography of the SCG region; measurement of the SCG temperature using optical pyrometry. As a result, it was found that the head front of the SCG region moved ahead of the collision point at a velocity of 3000 ± 100 m/s, while the collision point moved with a velocity of 2500 m/s. The calculation of the SCG temperature showed that the gas was heated up to 2832 K by the shock compression, while the measured temperature was in the range of 4100–4400 K. This is presumably due to the fact that small metal particles that broke off from the welded surfaces transferred their heat to the SCG region. To solve the shortage of austenite phase precipitation caused by nitrogen loss in the welding process of UNS S2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS), shielding gas nitriding was investigated by adding different N2 contents in Ar shielding gas during the welding process. A good thin-walled pipe butt joint was formed using the pulsed tungsten inert gas (P-TIG) welding method with Ar-N2 shielding gas. High cycle fatigue tests of the weld joints were conducted to study the effect of shielding gas nitriding on the fatigue properties. Fatigue tests at three stress levels of 225 MPa, 270 MPa, and 360 MPa were carried out on the weld joints with different N2 contents, and the fatigue samples were all fractured in the high temperature heat-affected zone (H-HAZ). Within the current process parameters, the fatigue life of the 4 vol.% N2 welded joints was optimal. Fatigue striations appeared in the fatigue crack propagation zone, and the transient fracture zone was similar to the tensile fracture. Under the low-stress level, the area of the crack propagation zone under 4 vol.% N2 was the highest, the tear ridges all expanded around the crack source area, and the fatigue crack propagation zone presented a radial distribution. The proliferation and expansion of dislocations were mainly carried out in the austenite grains, and the dislocation density of the fatigue specimens under 4 vol.% N2 was smaller than that of the Ar specimens. Shielding gas nitriding effectively improved the balance of the two-phase ratio and the hardness of austenite phase, optimized the internal slip system, inhibited the proliferation of dislocations in the austenite phase, and improved the fatigue life of weld joints. Gas protection is a crucial part of quality control in laser welding, especially for titanium alloy, which oxidizes easily at high temperatures. Substantial experiments concerning shielding gas characteristics in the welding process have been implemented. However, the common analysis conducted is simplistic and lacks a theoretical basis. This paper presented an investigation of the shielding gas behaviors based on numerical simulation and a titanium alloy laser welding experiment. The numerical model was established and validated by experiment. Subsequently, the temperature field and gas flow fields were calculated. By combining the two fields, the threshold temperature of gas protection was determined, and the influence of shielding gas parameters on the protection effect was examined. The results revealed that the protection of the high-temperature zone was primarily influenced by the nozzle height, nozzle inner diameter, and nozzle angle, while the plasma suppression effect was mainly correlated with the nozzle inner diameter and gas flow rate. These initial findings provide scientific guidance for the better quality production of laser beam welded components made of not only titanium alloy but also other metallic materials. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is commonly used for joining pipelines; however, it often leads to discoloration in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). In this study, 316L pipes were welded with different concentrations of oxygen present in the argon purge gas during welding. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of oxygen concentration in the protective gas on the pitting corrosion resistance of welded pipes. The experimental results showed that the thickness of the oxide layer formed in the HAZ depends on the concentration of oxygen in the protective gas. Increasing the oxygen concentration in the protective gas resulted in an increase in pitting corrosion resistance until a critical value, beyond which the resistance decreased. The results showed that the thickness of the oxide layer formed in the HAZ depends on the concentration of oxygen in the protective gas. The effect of the shielding gas arc welding process on the cavitation resistance of the three-component aluminum alloy AlMg4.5Mn and its welded joints was investigated. Welding was performed using the GTAW and GMAW processes in a shielded atmosphere of pure argon. After the welding, metallographic tests were performed, and the hardness distribution in the welded joints was determined. The ultrasonic vibration method was used to evaluate the base metal's and weld metal's resistance to cavitation. The change in mass was monitored to determine the cavitation rates. The morphology of the surface damage of the base metal and weld metal due to cavitation was monitored using scanning electron microscopy to explain the effect of the shielding gas arc welding process on their resistance to cavitation. Based on the numerical simulation method of the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT), an interference model was established to investigate the physical problem of two interacting cracks of different sizes in the welding zone of oil and gas pipelines. The obtained results of the current interference problem were compared with those of single crack case. Various crack configurations, such as different crack spacing and different crack sizes, were analyzed. The characteristic quantity fluid pressure load P during the crack propagation process, the peak value of the von Mises stress distribution field of the crack growth path, as well as the difference ∆Bx between the peak value of the magnetic induction intensity component at the crack and the value of the magnetic induction intensity component at its symmetrical position were calculated. The crack interaction scale factors, including γ P , γ Mises , and γ Δ B x , were compared and analyzed. The numerical modeling results show that when the unequal-length double cracks interfere with each other, the cracks are more likely to propagate toward each other. The tendency of the double-cracks to propagate toward each other gradually weakens as the distance between the crack tips increases and is finally the same as that of single-crack cases. It was also found that the effect of large-sized cracks on small-sized cracks is greater than that of small-sized ones on large-sized ones. With ER2319 and B4C powder as feedstocks and additives, respectively, a wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) system based on double-pulse melting electrode inert gas shielded welding (DP-MIG) was used to fabricate single-pass multilayer 2319 aluminum alloy. The results showed that, compared with additive manufacturing component without B4C, the addition of which can effectively reduce the grain size (from 43 μm to 25 μm) of the tissue in the deposited layer area and improve its mechanical properties (from 231 MPa to 286 MPa). Meanwhile, the mechanical properties are better in the transverse than in the longitudinal direction. Moreover, the strengthening mechanism of B4C on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy additive manufacturing mainly includes dispersion strengthening from fine and uniform B4C granular reinforcing phases and fine grain strengthening from the grain refinement of B4C. This paper presents an investigation of the welding residual stress and distortion of LY12 high-strength aluminum alloy (6061) by improving the local welding thermal and mechanical fields. A trailing hybrid high-speed gas fluid method was proposed and applied to decrease the welding residual stress and distortion of 6061 aluminum alloy efficiently. Firstly, the temperature and stress fields were calculated using the finite element simulation method, considering a trailing hybrid high-speed gas fluid field. The distance between the aerodynamic load and the heat source action was a key factor determined by the simulation method. In addition, the reasonable effective range of gas pressure was obtained. Subsequently, welding and distortion tests were conducted on the self-developed device under conventional welding and high-speed gas fluid field conditions. The results showed that an aerodynamic load under 30 MPa of gas pressure was available near the area at a distance of 20–28 mm from the heat source for thin plate welding distortion. The peak longitudinal residual tensile stresses in the weld's mid-length section decreased by 77.73%, the peak residual compressive stresses decreased by 69.23% compared with conventional welding, and the deflection distortion disappeared almost entirely. The maximum deflection of the distortion was only 1.79 mm, which was 83.76% lower than the 11.02 mm of the conventional welding distortion. In order to study the effect of element B on the corrosion resistance of stainless steel-based flux cored wire surfacing alloy, a stainless steel surfacing layer was prepared on the surface of carbon steel plate by melt electrode gas shielded welding, and then the microstructure, electrochemical corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the surfacing layer were analyzed. The results show that the surfacing layer of surfacing alloy presents M2B and Fe3(C, B) phases based on austenite. Boride formed in deposited metal has good corrosion resistance. Therefore, adding the proper amount of B can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of the surfacing layer. When the boron content is 2%, the corrosion resistance is the best. The minimum self-corrosion current density is 1.75766 × 10−11 mA·cm2, and the maximum self-corrosion potential is −0.254438 V. Maximum impedance curve radius. A wire arc additive manufacturing system, based on cold metal transfer technology, was utilized to manufacture the Al-Mg alloy walls. ER5556 wire was used as the filler metal to deposit Al-Mg alloys layer by layer. Based on the orthogonal experiments, the process parameters of the welding current, welding speed and gas flow, as well as interlayer residence time, were adjusted to investigate the microstructure, phase composition and crystal orientation as well as material properties of Al-Mg alloyed additive. The results show that the grain size of Al-Mg alloyed additive becomes smaller with the decrease of welding current or increased welding speed. It is easier to obtain the additive parts with better grain uniformity with the increase of gas flow or interlayer residence time. The phase composition of Al-Mg alloyed additive consists of α-Al matrix and γ (Al12Mg17) phase. The eutectic reaction occurs during the additive manufacturing process, and the liquefying film is formed on the α-Al matrix and coated on the γ phase surface. The crystal grows preferentially along the <111> and <101> orientations. When the welding current is 90 A, the welding speed is 700 mm/min, the gas flow is 22.5 L/min and the interlayer residence time is 5 min, the Al-Mg alloy additive obtains the highest tensile strength. Under the optimal process parameters, the average grain size of Al-Mg alloyed additive is 25 μm, the transverse tensile strength reaches 382 MPa, the impact absorption energy is 26 J, and the corrosion current density is 3.485 × 10−6 A·cm−2. Both tensile and impact fracture modes of Al-Mg alloyed additive are ductile fractures. In this study, an application of the laser-melting deposition additive manufacturing technique as a welding method has been studied for the laser welding (LW) of AISI 304 stainless steel, specifically 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm thick sheets. The welding was carried out without and with filler material. Inconel 718 powder particles were used as filler material in the second case. A series of experiments were designed by changing the process parameters to identify the effect of operating conditions on the weld width, depth, and height. The welds were examined through metallographic experiments performed at various cross-sections to identify the defects and pores. All the deposited welds were passed through a customized mini-focus X-ray system to analyze the weld uniformities. The optimal operating conditions were determined for 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm sheets for the LW with and without filler material. It was found that laser power, laser scanning speed, powder flow rate, and helium to argon gases mixture-control the weld bead dimensions and quality. X-ray analyses showed that the optimal operating conditions gave the least peak value of non-uniformity in the laser welds. This paper presents the results of comparative fatigue tests carried out on steel S355J2N specimens cut out using different cutting methods, i.e., plasma cutting, water jet cutting, and oxyacetylene cutting. All the specimens were subjected to cyclic loading from which appropriate S-N curves were obtained. Furthermore, face-of-cut hardness and roughness measurements were carried out to determine the effect of the cutting method on the fatigue strength of the tested steel. The fatigue strength results were compared with the standard S-N fatigue curves. The fatigue strength of the specimens cut out with oxyacetylene was found to be higher than that of the specimens cut out with plasma even though the surface roughness after cutting with plasma was smaller than in the case of the other cutting technology. This was due to the significant effect of material hardening in the heat-affected zones. The test results indicate that, in comparison with the effect of the cutting technology, the surface condition of the specimens has a relatively small effect on their fatigue strength. This paper builds an infinity shaped ("∞"-shaped) laser scanning welding test platform based on a self-developed motion controller and galvanometer scanner control gateway, takes the autogenous bead-on-plate welding of 304SS with 3 mm thick specimens as the experimental objects, designs the experimental parameters by the Latin hypercube sampling method for obtaining different penetration depth welded joints, and presents a methodology based on the neuroevolution of augmenting topologies for predicting the penetration depth of "∞"-shaped laser scanning welding. Laser power, welding speed, scanning frequency, and scanning amplitude are set as the input parameters of the model, and welding depth (WD) as the output parameter of the model. The model can accurately reflect the nonlinear relationship between the main welding parameters and WD by validation. Moreover, the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of the welding depth is about 6.2%. On the whole, the proposed methodology and model can be employed for guiding the actual work in the main process parameters' preliminary selection and lay the foundation for the study of penetration morphology control of "∞"-shaped laser scanning welding. Current standards related to welded joint defects (EN ISO 5817) only consider individual cases (i.e., single defect in a welded joint). The question remains about the behaviour of a welded joint in the simultaneous presence of several different types of defects, so-called multiple defects, which is the topic of this research. The main focus is on defects most commonly encountered in practice, such as linear misalignments, undercuts, incomplete root penetration, and excess weld metal. The welding procedure used in this case was metal active gas welding, a common technique when it comes to welding low-alloy low-carbon steels, including those used for pressure equipment. Different combinations of these defects were deliberately made in welded plates and tested in a standard way on a tensile machine, along with numerical simulations using the finite element method (FEM), based on real geometries. The goal was to predict the behaviour in terms of stress concentrations caused by geometry and affected by multiple defects and material heterogeneity. Numerical and experimental results were in good agreement, but only after some modifications of numerical models. The obtained stress values in the models ranged from noticeably lower than the yield stress of the used materials to slightly higher than it, suggesting that some defect combinations resulted in plastic strain, whereas other models remained in the elastic area. The stress–strain diagram obtained for the first group (misalignment, undercut, and excess root penetration) shows significantly less plasticity. Its yield stress is very close to its ultimate tensile strength, which in turn is noticeably lower compared with the other three groups. This suggests that welded joints with misalignment and incomplete root penetration are indeed the weakest of the four groups either due to the combination of the present defects or perhaps because of an additional unseen internal defect. From the other three diagrams, it can be concluded that the test specimens show very similar behaviour with nearly identical ultimate tensile strengths and considerable plasticity. The diagrams shows the most prominent yielding, with an easily distinguishable difference between the elastic and plastic regions. In this article, the range of works connected with the repair of a historical Maryan bell from 1639 are presented. The first attempts to repair damaged bells occurred in the 1930s in Poland. However, this process was stopped because of extensive technological difficulties. Welding and soldering-welding were the basic methods. There is one difference between these two methods—connecting surfaces are melted during the welding process but only heated until the melting temperature of the material added to the connection (that is the solder) during the soldering-welding process. It was important to heat the bell to the proper temperature during welding. Uneven heating causes the enlargement of existing cracks or the appearance of new ones, or even the complete destruction of the bell. Nowadays, a method of even heating using a special heating mat has been devised. Thanks to this method it is possible to control the heating and cooling process. The most important task during the whole operation of bell welding was obtaining the original sound. During this research, the chemical composition was examined to prepare a welding rod with a suitable chemical composition. After the repair process, an analysis of the sound of the bell was conducted. It was shown that the repair of bells is possible when correct thermal parameters are used. Tungsten inert gas-metal inert gas hybrid welding (TIG-MIG) combines the advantages of tungsten and metal inert gas welding. It can efficiently produce high-quality weld joints that meet modern manufacturing quality and efficiency requirements. Based on heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and electromagnetic theory, a three-dimensional coupled transient model of arc-droplet interactions in TIG-MIG hybrid welding was established. In this study, the temperature field, flow field, electromagnetic force, pressure, and current density parameters were analyzed in the arc space. A non-axisymmetric laser-tungsten inert gas (TIG) heat source was designed to join Mg–Al dissimilar metals with pure Zn filler at a series of welding speeds (500–900 mm/min). Laser and TIG heat sources respectively acted on Al and Mg base metals to precisely control their dissolution into the welding pool. The solidification rate of liquid metal was controlled by adjusting the welding speed, then the reaction process of Mg, Al and Zn could be accurately regulated. The results indicated that various microstructures including Al solid solution, Zn solid solution, Mg–Zn intermetallic compounds (IMCs) and eutectic structure formed in the joint produced at different speeds. Lower welding speed (500 mm/min) caused the microstructure coarsening and higher welding speed (900 mm/min) would lead to the enrichment of MgZn2 intermetallic compounds. At the optimal welding speed of 800 mm/min in particular, fine MgZn2 IMCs grains uniformly distributed in the Al and Zn solid solution. Residual stresses change the stress ratio of fluctuating stresses, hence seriously affect the fatigue life of orthotropic steel decks (OSDs) under traffic loading. Residual stress distributions near the U rib-diaphragm joints are very complicated and need to be investigated further. In this paper, a systematic method has been proposed for calculating the residual stress field in the joint of U rib and diaphragm due to thermal cutting and welding. Firstly, a mathematical model of cutting heat sources was established to predict the temperature field. Then, a numerical elastoplastic thermomechanical model was built to predict the residual stress evolutions in a diaphragm-rib joint through the whole fabrication process involving flame cutting and welding. Moreover, the simulated temperature contours at the fusion zone and the residual stress distributions in the rib-diaphragm joint were compared and verified against the experimental ones. The numerical results showed a great agreement with the experimental ones, indicating that the heat source model can be used to accurately predict the temperature field during flame cutting. Finally, the validated numerical model was utilized to conduct parametrical analyses on the effects of thermal processing rates, e.g., the cutting and welding speeds and on the residual stress distribution in the rib-diaphragm joint. The results indicate that a faster cutting speed and a slower welding speed can decrease the residual stress magnitude at the rib-diaphragm joints and reduce the high-stress zone near the diaphragm cutouts. The research work and related tests aimed to identify the effect of filler metal-free laser beam welding on the structure and properties of butt joints made of steel 700MC subjected to the TMCP (thermo-mechanically controlled processed) process. The tests involved 10-mm thick welded joints and a welding linear energy of 4 kJ/mm and 5 kJ/mm. The inert gas shielded welding process was performed in the flat position (PA) and horizontal position (PC). Non-destructive testing enabled classification of the tested welded joints as representing the quality level B in accordance with the requirements set out in standard 13919-1. Destructive tests revealed that the tensile strength of the joints was 5% lower than S700MC steel. The results of tensile tests and changes in structure were referred to joints made using the MAG (Metal Active Gas) method. The tests of thin films performed using a high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope revealed that, during laser beam welding, an increase in dilution was accompanied by an increase in the content of alloying microadditions titanium and niobium, particularly in the fusion area. A significant content of hardening phases in the welded joint during cooling led to significant precipitation hardening by fine-dispersive (Ti,Nb)(C,N) type precipitates being of several nanometres in size, which, in turn, resulted in the reduction of plastic properties. An increase in the concentration of elements responsible for steel hardening, i.e., Ti and Nb, also contributed to reducing the weld toughness below the acceptable value, which amounts to 25 J/cm2. In cases of S700MC, the analysis of the phase transformation of austenite exposed to welding thermal cycles and the value of carbon equivalent cannot be the only factors taken into consideration when assessing weldability. Autogenous laser welding of 5A90 Al–Li alloy sheets in a butt-joint configuration was carried out in this study. The microstructure characteristics of the weld metal and base metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section of the welded joints were examined quantitatively using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique. The results show that the weld metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section exhibits similar grain structural features including the grain orientations, grain shapes, and grain sizes, whereas distinct differences in the texture intensity and misorientation distributions are observed. However, the base metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section of the joints reveals the obvious different texture characteristics in terms of the grain orientation, grain morphology, predominate texture ingredients, distribution intensities of textures, and grain boundary misorientation distribution, resulting in the diversity of the microhardness in the base metal and the softening of the weld metal. However, the degree of the drop in the hardness of the weld metal is highly correlated to the microtexture developed in the base metal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
