This paper analyses the key findings of a study devoted to PET-modified bitumen. The research program was run according to the D-optimal experimental plan based on a factorial design. Five factors, i.e., the type of polymer (source), the type of bitumen (qualitative factors), PET amount, mixing rate, and mixing temperature (quantitative factors), controlled the bitumen–polymer mixing process. The experiment included a series of determinations of bitumen's rheological characteristics obtained by MSCR (Jnr, R) and G*/sin(δ) at 50 °C, 60 °C, and 70 °C. The low-temperature properties of the composite (critical temperature) were evaluated using a BBR test. The findings showed that bitumen modification with PET primarily reduced the creep susceptibility of the bituminous–polymer mixture. The low-temperature characteristics of the modified bitumen played a secondary but essential role. The amount of polymer and the mixing rate interacted with the temperature, significantly reducing the stiffness of the composite, while the type and amount of bitumen had a substantial effect on the results obtained in the BBR test. It is worth noting that when combining bitumen and plastomer, special attention should be paid to ensuring a high level of homogeneity of the mixture by controlling the parameters of the mixing process accordingly. The tests and analyses provided crucial models (GLM), which allowed for the prediction of the plastomer-modified bitumen's low- and high-temperature properties. The resulting relationships between factors and the identification of their impact on the bitumen properties enable a better understanding of the process of bitumen modification with PET. The conclusions presented here serve as a basis for future optimisation of the modified bitumen composition. The performed studies indicate that the use of >3% plastomer in bitumen 70/100 allows for a reduction in its susceptibility (MSCR) to below 0.5 kPa−1, making it suitable for bituminous mixtures for high-traffic roads. Hot- and cold-applied joint sealants are materials commonly used for the surface repairs of the upper layers of asphalt or concrete road surfaces. Our investigations covered six hot-applied joint sealants, classified as the high-extension type N1 (elastic) or low-extension type N2 (normal), in accordance with the standard EN 14188-1; the sealants were obtained commercially from four European manufacturers. The present paper focuses on the characterization of the consistency of the joint sealants, the bituminous binders that contain them, and the characterization of their insoluble components. Additional testing methods included an FTIR analysis of the sealants and the extracted binders, as well as SEM, EDS, and sieving analyses of the insoluble material. Joint sealants are complex formulations and include a broad range of base asphalt binders and other components. Their compositions may vary widely, while still fulfilling the performance specifications. Through the extraction of the solvents and the separation of the crack sealants, it was found that radically different compositions of crack sealants resulted in the comparatively similar performance of the tested material. Asphalt mixtures are multi-phase composites composed of aggregates, bitumen, mineral powders, and voids, and various structures are intertwined during the compaction process. Most of the traditional research focuses on the macro-scale domain, and it is difficult to obtain the internal structure of asphalt mixture in different compaction processes. With the continuous development of digital image technology, the influence of the meso-structure of the asphalt mixture on the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture has become a new means to evaluate the performance of the asphalt mixture. In this paper, different numbers of compactions are selected to represent different stages in the compaction process, the digital images of specimens in different compaction stages are obtained by industrial CT scanning technology. Then, the images are processed and reconstructed in three dimensions using improved image segmentation methods, and the position characteristics and geometric information of coarse aggregate are obtained by combining the Oriented Bounding Box (OBB). The meso-response characteristics of the skeleton structure of the asphalt mixture during compaction were studied. The influence of the internal structure of the mixture on the compaction quality of the mixture was obtained, which is of great significance for the study of improving the durability of the pavement. The results show that the "effective coordination number" (the number of aggregate particles that can transmit force in the skeleton structure) is greatly related to the aggregate size. With the compaction process, the centroid of coarse aggregate in the upper layer of the specimen reflects the overall downward movement trend. The inclination angle of the aggregate spindle tends to be in the range of 80°~100°; the anisotropic amplitude of the xy plane increases, and the direction of the aggregate spindle becomes more and more consistent. With the increase in the number of rotational compactions, these four parameters showed obvious rules, indicating that this meso-characteristic index could well characterize the compaction quality of the asphalt mixture in the compaction process. A 23 factorial design experiment was conducted to study the influence of pre-heating temperature (HT) for manufacturing sample, bonding temperature (BT) onto rheometer, and trimming state (Trim) of the sample on complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) using a dynamic shear rheometer on unmodified bitumen of types 50/70, 70/100, and two 160/220 from various sources. In addition, the black diagram and 2S2P1D model were used to evaluate the viscoelastic properties of bitumens. Findings show that the G* is more sensitive to the changes than the δ. Additionally, it was found that the 8 mm parallel plate diameter had a higher sensitivity to the trimming state than the 25 mm. The tested factor HT generally did not have a statistically significant impact on the results of the tested materials, except for 160/220_I. At practically all the temperatures tested for 50/70 and 160/220_II, the G* dropped by increasing the factor BT from a lower to a higher value. The Trim:BT interaction has the greatest impact on all materials and temperatures on G*, except for 160/220 at lower temperatures. However, in the case of δ, the Trim:BT interaction has the most significant effects for 70/100 and 160/220_II. The quality of bitumen is standardized by conventional tests. With the development of new techniques, rotational and oscillatory measuring systems are applied to evaluate bitumen under defined geometric, temperature, frequency, stress, and strain conditions that correspond to loads during asphalt production and service. Several studies have focused on determining the effect of composition on bitumen properties at service temperatures. However, there is a lack of information related to the effect of composition on viscosity at higher temperatures, which influences production processes. The different types of bitumen, samples of 50/70, 35/50, 45/80-75, and 25/55-60 bitumen, had different viscosity values in intervals corresponding to a confidence level of 95%. The viscosity–temperature relationship in temperature range of 120 to 180 °C was observed in values of 3.87 and 3.70 for unmodified bitumen and 3.09 and 3.22 for modified bitumen. The effect of differences in SARA fractions content on the variation in viscosity using regression analysis showed the importance of asphaltenes (direct correlation) and aromates (negative correlation) contents for 50/70 bitumen with a coefficient of linear regression above 0.7. In comparison, the strong effect of saturates and asphaltenes (negative correlation) and resins was identified for 45/80-75 bitumen samples with correlation of 0.5 to 0.7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental safeguards promote innovative construction technologies for sustainable pavements. On these premises, this study investigated four hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures—i.e., A, B, C, and D—for the railway sub-ballast layer with 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) by total aggregate mass and a rejuvenator additive, varying the bitumen content between 3.5% and 5.0%. Both Marshall and gyratory compactor design methods have been performed, matching the stability, indirect tensile strength, and volumetric properties of each mixture. Dynamic stiffness and fatigue resistance tests provided mechanical performances. Laboratory results highlighted that the RAP and the rejuvenator additive increase the mechanical properties of the mixtures. In addition, the comparative analysis of production costs revealed up to 20% savings as the RAP content increased, and the life cycle impact analysis (LCIA) proved a reduction of the environmental impacts (up to 2% for resource use-fossils, up to 7% for climate change, and up to 13% for water use). The experimental results confirm that HMA containing RAP has mechanical performances higher than the reference mixture with only virgin raw materials. These findings could contribute to waste management and reduce the environmental and economic costs, since the use of RAP in the sub-ballast is not, so far, provided in the Italian specifications for railway construction. The utilization of recycled materials is an important issue in the context of environmental protection. The large amounts of recycled material recovered from the demolition of asphalt road structures indicate the need to find new ways of utilizing them. In the case of road renovation projects, large amounts of recycled materials are, in most cases, recovered in the form of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), reclaimed concrete (RC) and recycled aggregate (RA). To focus on the effects of the use of recovered materials (RAP, RC and RA), the same composition was used for all of the analyzed mixtures in terms of foamed bitumen (FB) and Portland cement (CEM) content. The scope of laboratory tests included the specification of the following parameters: the amount of air void content Vm, the determination of axial compression strength at +25 °C, indirect tensile strength (ITS) at +25 °C, water resistance, TSR, water and frost resistance, WRW+M stiffness modulus (IT-CY) at 13 °C, dynamic dynamicmodulus. The plan of the experiment assumed addition recycled material in quantities between 20% and 80% in increments of 20%. The obtained results indicate that both the type and quantity of recycled material significantly affect the properties of the cold-recycled mixture with foamed bitumen. Using reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled cement concrete guarantees high levels of stiffness in the recycled mixture. Howeverin the case of recycled aggregate, the authors did not observe any visible changes in the dynamicdynamic modulus, irrespective of the loading conditions. It was also indicated that it is necessary to reduce the quantity of reclaimed asphalt pavement in the composition of the FB-RCM mix to maintain the required air void content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In previous studies, different additives and modifiers have been studied to improve the properties of asphalt concrete mixtures, whose main failures are plastic deformation and cracking. In this research, the improvement of the properties of asphalt concrete mixtures were investigated by introducing residual plastics as a substitute for virgin bitumen, which improves the sustainability of the mixtures. Furthermore, the results obtained from these new mixtures were compared with a mixture designed with polymer-modified bitumen (PMB). Ten experimental designs were tested with three types of waste fibre plastics from a municipal solid waste treatment plant and two percentages of bitumen replacement (15% and 25%). The experimental testing plan included air void characterization, moisture sensitivity, stiffness and fatigue resistance, among others. An increase of approximately 5% in voids could be observed when introducing the plastic material and therefore some tests were carried out to over-compact the specimens. The results showed an improvement in the mechanical performance of the experimental mixtures, highlighting the resistance against plastic deformations, which even reached similar values to the mixtures made with PMB. Changes in the properties of bitumen binders that occur as a result of aging have a huge impact on the durability of products produced from them. In particular, asphalt pavements, which constitute the most common use of petroleum bitumen, are susceptible to damage resulting from the increasing stiffness of the bitumen during its life cycle. Increased stiffness of asphalt pavements reduces the pavement resistance to low-temperature cracks and fatigue cracks, ultimately leading to the loss of their functional properties and the need for road repair. The rate of changes in bitumen properties is influenced by many factors, the most important of which are environmental conditions, technological parameters of binder processing, and physicochemical properties. The greatest impact on minimizing the adverse effect of aging is the use of bitumen suitably resistant to aging, and changing the technological parameters of its application. This article reviews the literature and standardized test methods of bitumen aging, with a focus on the methods that are most often used in practice, to evaluate the suitability of bitumen for use in road construction. The presented methods are limited to aging simulation. This mini-review presents the most important stages of aging procedures, their advantages and limitations, as identified by the authors of this publication for different types of bitumen. Moreover, the most important directions of developments in the field of new laboratory aging tests are highlighted. In recent years, both dry and wet processes to include waste rubber (WR) in bituminous mixtures have had little success in Italy due to technical and economic reasons. However, the necessity to recycle this waste material and the increasing interest in low-noise emitting pavement is encouraging researchers and stakeholders to explore new solutions. In this context, a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) manufactured with polymer-modified bitumen and fine WR added through a dry method has been recently developed. This paper deals with the rheological characterization and modeling of this innovative HMA, in comparison with two reference mixtures, with ordinary polymer-modified bitumen and with an asphalt rubber binder produced through a wet process. The complex modulus was measured through uniaxial cyclic compression tests at different temperatures and frequencies. The Huet-Sayegh rheological model was used to simulate the experimental data. The results showed that the time-temperature superposition principle is valid, despite the presence of polymers and WR. The Huet-Sayegh model allows a good fitting of the dynamic modulus and loss angle data to be achieved. The viscous response of the mixture including polymer-modified bitumen and rubber powder is higher than the other HMAs, which is mainly associated with the nature of the modifiers, the binder content in the mix and the less severe short-term aging. Asphalt pavements inevitably deteriorate over time, requiring frequent maintenance work to ensure the proper serviceability of the road network. Small interventions, such as resurfacing for pavement preservation, are preferable to reconstruction at the end of roads' in-service lives as they limit environmental- and economic-related impacts. Thin asphalt overlay (TAO) mixture represents a suitable maintenance solution to restore the functional properties of road surfaces. Due to the increasing awareness of the depletion of non-renewable resources and the importance of promoting the circular economy, this study evaluated the possibility of using fully recycled TAO mixes by investigating their volumetric and mechanical properties. Two eco-friendly TAO mixes were designed using recycled aggregates from reclaimed asphalt pavements, a municipal solid waste incinerator, and steel slags in order to meet EN 13108-2 requirements. The TAO mixes differed in regard to the type of bituminous binder (neat/SBS-modified bitumens) and fibres (natural/synthetic) employed. The preliminary results demonstrated that the presence of recycled aggregates did not negatively affect the workability and the mechanical performances of the two sustainable mixtures in terms of stiffness, tensile resistance, rutting and moisture susceptibility. In order to conserve non-renewable natural resources, waste cooking oil (WCO) in bitumen can help lower CO2 emissions and advance the environmental economy. In this study, three different components of WCO were isolated and then, together with polyphosphoric acid (PPA), used separately as bitumen modifiers to determine the suitability of various substances in WCO with PPA. Conventional tests, including penetration, softening point temperature, and ductility, and the dynamic shear rheology (DSR) test, including temperature sweep and frequency sweep, were used to evaluate the influence of WCO/PPA on the traditional performance and rheological properties at high and low temperatures. The results indicate that WCO reduced the ductility and penetration value, when the use of PPA increased the softening point temperature and high-temperature performance. Compared to reference bitumen, the rutting factor and viscous activation energy (Ea) of bitumen modified with 4% WCO and 2% PPA has the most significant increase by 18.6% and 31.5, respectively. All components of WCO have a significant impact on improving the low-temperature performance of PPA-modified bitumen. The performance of the composite-modified bitumen at low temperatures is negatively affected by some waxy compounds in WCO, such as methyl palmitate, which tends to undergo a solid–liquid phase change as the temperature decreases. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the field performance of crumb-rubber-modified asphalt mixtures used as a surface layer on high-volume traffic roads. For this purpose, several road sections were constructed under different climate conditions and using control mixtures (manufactured with traditional SBS polymer-modified binders) and crumb-rubber-modified mixtures. After the construction of the different road sections, cores were taken at different periods of their service life (up to 63 months) and they were tested in the laboratory in order to assess the evolution of the density, stiffness and fatigue resistance of the layers. Based on the results obtained from tests, it can be concluded that under real severe traffic and climate conditions, asphalt mixtures manufactured with crumb-rubber-modified bitumen offer ageing and mechanical performance very similar to that offered by asphalt mixtures manufactured with traditional SBS-modified bitumen. This research effort is geared towards revealing the latent potential of discarded shoe polish that might be repurposed as an asphalt fluxing agent for the construction of durable and sustainable road surfaces. To drive this creative invention, the effect of various proportions of waste shoe polish (e.g., 5, 10 and 15 wt. % WSP) on the performance of base AP-5 bitumen was inspected in great detail. A meticulous investigation of the chemical, physical, and rheological properties of the resultant combinations was carried out using a variety of state-of-the-art laboratory techniques, specifically: thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detection (TLC-FID), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), needle penetration, ring-and-ball softening point, Brookfield viscometer, ductility, flash/fire points, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), multiple stress-creep recovery (MSCR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The Iatroscan data disclosed that the continuous feeding of binder with WSP had a minor impact on SARA fractional distribution, regardless of aging. According to the FT-IR scan, the stepwise addition of WSP to the binder did not result in any significant chemical alterations in the blends. The combined outcomes of the DSR/BBR/empirical test methods forecasted that the partly bio-sourced additive would greatly improve the mixing–compaction temperatures, workability, and coating–adhesion properties of bituminous mixtures while imparting them with outstanding anti-aging/cracking attributes. In short, the utilization of waste shoe polish as a fluxing agent for hot asphalt mix production and application is not only safe, feasible, and affordable, but it has the potential to abate the pollution caused by the shoe-care market while simultaneously enhancing the overall performance of the pavement and extending its service lifespan. (i) Recycled and renewable materials in asphalt pavements may be employed for the modification of asphalt binders and/or for the full or partial replacement of natural aggregates and mineral filler in asphalt mixtures [[1]]. A sustainable approach in asphalt pavement engineering should focus on materials, design methods, and technologies that can contribute to minimizing environmental impacts through a reduction in energy consumption and natural resources, while ensuring that all performance standards and requirements are met. By comparing the performance of various binders based on Zero Shear Viscosity (ZSV), grey relational analysis showed the highest correlation with an anti-rutting indicator for a high-viscosity-modified asphalt binder, thus indicating its pronounced anti-rutting potential. Tri-block copolymer styrene-butadiene (SBS) is extensively applied in bituminous highway construction due to its high elasticity and excellent weather resistance. With the extension of time, tri-block structural SBS automatically degrades into bi-block structural SB- with some terminal oxygen-containing groups under the comprehensive effects of light, heat, oxygen, etc. In this paper, the effects of aging temperature, aging time and oxygen concentration on the molecular structure of thermo-oxidative aged SBS were mainly investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the correlation between oxygen-containing groups and thermal properties (TG-DTG) was further discussed. The FTIR and XPS results show that rapid decomposition of SBS will occur with increments of aging temperature, aging time and oxygen concentration, and a large number of oxygen-containing groups such as -OH, C=O, -COOH, etc. will be formed during thermo-oxidative aging. In short-term aging, changes in aging temperature and oxygen concentration have a significant impact on the structural damage of SBS. However, in long-term aging, it has no further effect on the molecular structure of SBS or on increasing oxygen concentration. The TG and DTG results indicate that the concentration of substances with low molecular weight gradually increases with the improvement of the degree of aging of the SBS, while the initial decomposition rate increases at the beginning of thermal weightlessness and the decomposition rate slows down in comparison with neat SBS. From the relation between the XPS and TG results, it can be seen that the initial thermal stability of SBS rapidly reduces as the relative concentration of the oxygen-containing groups accumulates around 3%, while the maximum decomposition temperature slowly decreases when the relative concentration of the oxygen-containing groups is more than 3%, due to the difficult damage to strong bonds on the molecular structure of aged SBS. Properties of cement-stabilized gravel modified by emulsified asphalt under freezing and thawing cycle conditions were investigated by adjusting the dosage of cement. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were introduced to analyze the influential mechanism. The results indicate that cement emulsified asphalt stabilized gravel with 5 wt % of cement performed well in both mechanics and frost-resistance. Although the addition of emulsified asphalt would lead to a partial decrease of strength, it can extend the process of strength loss and improve the freezing resistance. The main reason for this is that the permeability can be improved by the filling effects of emulsified asphalt. The frost-heave stress caused by the phase transition of water can also be remitted by emulsified asphalt, the elasticity modulus of which is much lower than the matrix. Bituminous materials are playing a vital role in pavement design and the roofing industry because of outstanding properties. Unfortunately, bituminous materials will release volatile organic compounds (VOC), making them non-environmentally friendly. Therefore, technologies that can be used to decrease the VOC emission are urgently required. In this research, the VOC emission and material behaviors were analyzed and compared to investigate the possibility of adding styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) and active carbon filler into bituminous materials to develop environmentally-friendly materials. Thermal gravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy testing (UV-Vis) were employed to characterize the VOC emission process. Temperature sweep testing and frequency sweep testing were conducted to evaluate the rheological properties of bituminous materials. Research results indicated that the combined introduction of 4 wt% styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) and 4 wt% active carbon filler cannot only significantly lower the VOC emission speed and amount, but also improve the deformation resistance behavior at a higher temperature. The research presented by Gaudenzi et al. [[30]] involved rheological measurements aimed at evaluating the fatigue behaviour and comparing the self-healing capability of two plain bitumen and a bio-binder obtained by partially replacing one of the plain bitumen with a renewable bio-oil. The mineral composition, the physical and mechanical properties, the morphology and the texture of the aggregates, as well as the affinity between aggregate and bitumen were investigated. The results showed that both temperatures improved the properties of the base bitumen, although the bitumen modified at 190 °C contained more non-degraded rubber. Moreover, the complex modulus values confirmed that cold recycled asphalt mixtures provide an intermediate behaviour between asphalt concrete mixtures and cement-treated mixtures. Polymers are widely used to improve the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures. Among them, styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) is the most commonly used, especially in the wet modification of virgin bitumen. This method, which is extensively utilized, has several advantages, but also some disadvantages, concerning its performance (such as the risk of instability or a lack of homogeneity) and logistical management (such as the need for special equipment, the transport of materials, and the dependence on the refinery that modifies the bitumen). This paper analyses the use of the most conventional types of polymers (two types of SBS, one type of BS, and rubber from end-of-life tires), dry added, as an alternative method. They have been used in porous asphalt mixtures. This type of bituminous mixture is usually designed with commercial polymer-modified bitumen, due to the mechanical requirements, and it is very sensitive to the properties of the binder used. The mechanical behavior of experimental porous asphalt mixtures has been significantly improved, especially in the case of SBS, although the performance did not reach that of commercial polymer-modified bitumen. The results have shown that the dry method is a suitable and feasible option to manufacture modified mixtures, especially considering its advantages, from a logistical viewpoint, in comparison with the wet method. The adopted TD–GC–MS/O method helps determine the correlation between the odour signals and compounds separated on the chromatographic column, from the analysed gas mixture. It is possible to compare the retention times at which the odour signals were identified with the retention time of eluting compounds, when the test system and matrix are known. The presented study describes the details of representative samples obtained from (1) indoor air samples from a room where floor materials containing bitumen are present, (2) wooden floor staves placed in an emission chamber, and (3) fragments (chips) of the materials mentioned above, placed in glass tubes, exposed to an elevated desorption temperature. The results, presented in the paper, describe the identified odours and their intensity and assign chemical compounds to each odour, indicating their likely source of origin. The results presented in the manuscript are intended to show what methodology can be adopted to obtain intense odours from the tested samples, without losing the sensitivity derived from GC–MS. The manuscript presents representative results—case studies. The results for various types of samples were not very reproducible, related to the complex matrix of bituminous products. The enormity of compounds present in tar adhesives makes it possible to indicate only the groups of compounds that emit from these systems. They include, primarily, aliphatic, aromatic and heteroaromatic hydrocarbons, particularly Naphthalene and Phenol derivatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the basic assumptions of analytical dimensioning models of asphalt pavements is failure due to fatigue cracking of the bituminous layers. Furthermore, it is considered that the damaging effects of different traffic loads are linear and cumulative, per Miner's law. However, the analysis carried out on the effect of temperature, rest periods, and ageing of the bituminous materials questions considering fatigue failure as the only and main assumption for the calculation of the pavement life. Ageing of the pavement asphalt layers results in stiffening and transverse cracking. Consequently, these asphalt layers are no longer of infinite extent in the horizontal direction and their response resembles that of a slab. The application of this last calculation assumption provides pavement sections more in line with those used in Spain in the Catalogue of Structural Sections, which is based on experience gained from the real behavior of those sections. The calculation based on the fatigue laws results in undersized structures. This paper shows the results of a strain sweep test implemented at the UPC Roads Laboratory, which was used to analyse all the aforementioned effects and to propose a calculation procedure for heavy traffic pavements considering transverse cracking of the asphalt layers. The Cement Grouted Bituminous Mix (CGBM) is an innovative material that could be used to build airport pavements subjected to heavy concentrated loads or fuel and solvent leaks. CGBM is composed of a porous asphalt clogged with an expansive cement mixture, which fills the asphalt voids. This paper focuses on two airport pavements (i.e., a taxiway and a helipad one) to be paved in an Italian airport. For each surface, the construction and maintenance costs of a CGBM pavement and a traditional flexible pavement have been compared. The pavements should bear different traffic loads, while the weather, subgrade, and materials are the same: the fatigue and rutting verification gives structures whose cost analysis leads to different results. The CGBM solution for the taxiway has a cost comparable to that of the equivalent traditional flexible pavement (i.e., 73.87 €/m2 vs. 73.20 €/m2 during the service life). On the other hand, the overall discounted cost of the helipad surface paved with CGBM is higher than that obtained for the traditional pavement (i.e., 82.4 €/m2 vs. 67.5 €/m2). The presented study explores the effects of decreased temperatures utilized in rolling thin-film oven (RTFOT) laboratory short-term ageing of asphalt binders based on 35/50- and 50/70-penetration paving-grade bitumen. Additionally, the effects of three additives used with these binders at different concentrations are evaluated: liquid anti-stripping agent, liquid warm-mix additive, and solid warm-mix additive. The resulting asphalt binders were subjected to basic (penetration at 25 °C, softening point, dynamic viscosity) and functional high-temperature characterization (G*/sin(δ), high critical temperature, non-recoverable creep compliance). It was found that the decreased short-term ageing temperatures may detrimentally impact the high-temperature grade of bituminous binders, but this effect can be mitigated by the use of appropriate additives. What is more, it was found that bituminous binders may respond differently to the aforementioned factors. Based on the results, it is advised that asphalt binders intended for use in warm-mix asphalts should be thoroughly tested to appropriately simulate the mixture production process and its effects. The push for environmental sustainability in the civil engineering industry has resulted in an increased interest in the use of recycled construction materials, with one example being the use of waste plastic for the modification of bituminous binder in asphalt mixtures. Existing research has associated waste plastics with various binder and asphalt mixture performance enhancing properties. However, there is a lack of research on the age-related durability of waste plastic-modified roads. This research compared the effect of commercially available waste plastic binder modifiers on the ageing phenomenon of bituminous binders and asphalt mixtures, to the effect of conventional polymers SBS and EVA, through artificial bituminous binder and asphalt mixture ageing performed in a laboratory. The addition of polymers (both waste and virgin) resulted in an increase in binder stiffness after short-term ageing as the polymer content increased. The effect of the waste plastic on ageing was comparable to the effects associated with the conventional polymers, and it was concluded that the waste plastic binder modified products should be considered sustainable alternatives to standard polymers for bituminous binder and asphalt mixture modification. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to track binders produced by three different plants: plants A, B, and C. The work included the quality assessment of 80 bituminous materials graded as BND 70/100 and 100/130 according to GOST 33133 (Russian interstate standard) and chemical analyses using FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR analyses were conducted before and after short-term ageing in a Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT). Thus, the number of binder samples was multiplied by two (2) for a final total of 160 infrared (IR) spectra. All infrared spectra were normalised to ensure the reliability of results, and the standard deviation and variance coefficient were included. The research was aimed at assessing the effect of the redispersible polymer powder on the fracture resistance of a subbase made of a mineral–cement mixture with a bitumen emulsion. The test was performed at two temperatures, i.e., 0 °C and 20 °C. The prepared mixtures differed in the content of cement, asphalt emulsion, and polymer modifier. Cement and redispersible polymer powder were dosed in 1.5% steps from 0.5% to 3.5% while the amount of bitumen emulsion ranged from 0.0% to 5.0%. The SCB (semi-circular bending) tests carried out in the laboratory showed the dependence of the influence of the amount of binder and polymer modifier on the fracture resistance of the recycled subbase. Mixes containing a polymer modifier in their composition are characterized by a much higher resistance to cracking than traditional mineral–cement–emulsion mixtures. An example is the doubling of the framework's fracture toughness (KIC) when the amount of the polymer modifier is increased from 0.5% to 2.0% with a constant cement content of 0.5%. This article discusses the phenomenon of fresh and RAP binders miscibility and presents test results of bitumen film properties from specially prepared asphalt mixtures. The miscibility of a fresh binder and a RAP binder still has not been fully recognised. The aim of this study was to determine the homogeneity level of the bitumen film based on viscoelastic assessment. In addition, an attempt was made to assess the impact of fresh binder on the binders blending degree. The study included assessment of homogeneity of bitumen film comprising various types of bituminous binders. The assessment was conducted on the basis of tests in the dynamic shear rheometer regarding rheological properties of the binders recovered from specific layers of the bitumen film using a staged extraction method. A complex shear modulus as a function of temperature, an elastic recovery R and a non-recoverable creep compliance modulus JNR from MSCR test were determined. The conducted statistical analyses confirmed the significant impact of the type of fresh binder on the blending degree. Regressive dependencies have been set between the differences of the complex shear modulus of the binders subject to mixing and differences of the complex shear modulus of binders from the internal and external layer of the bitumen film comprised of those binders. The variety of material classes engaged for constructions is very wide, ranging from naturally occurring substances, such as stone materials and wood, to manufactured products such as inorganic binders, ceramic bricks, adhesives, metals, composites like concrete, bituminous or fibre-reinforced materials. With the growing interest in bituminous construction materials, desulfurized crumb rubber (CR)/styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified asphalts have been investigated by many researchers as low-cost environmental-friendly road construction materials. This study aimed to investigate the rheological properties of desulfurized CR/SBS composite modified asphalt within various temperature ranges. Bending beam rheometer (BBR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests were performed on conventional CR/SBS composite modified asphalt and five types of desulfurized CR/SBS modified asphalts. Meanwhile, Burgers' model and the Kelvin–Voigt model were used to derive nonlinear viscoelastic parameters and analyze the viscoelastic mechanical behavior of the asphalts. The experimental results indicate that both the desulfurized CR/SBS composite modifier and force chemical reactor technique can enhance the crosslinking of CR and SBS copolymer, resulting in an improved high-, intermediate-, and low-temperature performance of desulfurized CR/SBS composite modified asphalt. Burgers' model was found to be apposite in simulating the creep stages obtained from MSCR tests for CR/SBS composite modified asphalts. The superior high-temperature performance of desulfurized CR/SBS modified asphalt prepared with 4% SBS, 20% desulfurized rubber, and a force chemical reactor time of 45 min contributes to the good high-temperature elastic properties of the asphalt. Therefore, this combination is recommended as an optimal preparation process. In summary, the desulfurization of crumb rubber and using the force chemical reactor technique are beneficial to composite asphalt performance and can provide a new way of utilizing waste tire rubber. The reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has become a moderately common practice in most countries; Hence, rejuvenating materials with RAP have earned publicity in the asphalt manufacturers, mainly due to the increasing raw material costs. In this study, the crumb rubber (CR) and waste frying oil (WFO) utilized as waste materials to restore the properties and enhance the rutting resistance of the RAP. Several physical, rheological, chemical properties of bituminous binders were tested. The result showed that the RAP bituminous binders incorporating WFO and CR decreased softening points and the increased penetration value; these translate to an increase in penetration index. Moreover, the viscosity of the WFO/CR combination reclaimed asphalt pavement binder showed better workability and stiffness, as well as a low storage stability temperature (less than 2.2 °C) with an acceptable loss upon heating. Without chemical reaction was observed between the waste-frying oil with the rubberized binder and the reclaimed asphalt pavement binder. Additionally, the WFO/CR rheological properties combined with the reclaimed asphalt pavement binder were comparable to the control sample. The incorporation of CR with WFO as a hybrid rejuvenator enhanced the rutting resistance. Therefore, the presence of WFO/CR has a considerable influence on the RAP binder properties while preserving a better environment and reducing pollution by reusing waste materials. The process of water-based foaming of bitumen produces binders that can be incorporated in cold recycled asphalt mixes and pavement upper structural layers made of half-warm mix asphalt prepared at 100–130 °C. During the foaming process, cold water and air act on hot bitumen (160–170 °C), which results in the explosive vaporization of water leading to changes in the binder structure. The impact of foaming on the properties of bitumen 70/100 was evaluated by investigating the binder characteristics before and after foaming. Determination of two foaming parameters, maximum expansion and half-life, was followed by measurements of penetration at 25 °C, softening point, Fraass breaking point, and dynamic viscosity at 60, 90, and 135 °C. Rheological and low-temperature tests were also performed before and after foaming bitumen 70/100. The Bending Beam Rheometer method was applied to determine the low temperature stiffness modulus. A DHR-2 rheometer was used to determine the dynamic modulus and phase angle of the tested binder. The Black and master curves before and after foaming were plotted in the 2S2P1D model and the model parameters were analysed. The application of various modifiers has emerged in recent years to improve conventional petroleum-based bitumen properties. The natural asphalt called Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) has been applied very often due to its consistent properties, high viscosity and density, and superior rheological properties, and effective blending with other bitumen. However, most studies on TLA-modified binders always focused on physical and rheological properties in the original (unaged) condition, but the details about aging properties are often neglected. This study aimed to investigate the effect of short-term aging on the physical and rheological characteristics of the 35/50 base bitumen modified by the addition of two different TLA contents. The conventional physical tests and dynamic shear rheological tests were undertaken before and after aging to measure the penetration and softening point, complex shear modulus, and phase angle of the modified binders, as well as to calculate the zero shear viscosity using the Cross model fitting procedure. Based on the results of the above-mentioned comprehensive testing, the effect of aging on TLA-modified binder properties was evaluated using aging indices, as well as a direct comparison of results. The tests revealed that the short-term aging of TLA-modified binders did not worsen or reduce the pavement resistance to permanent deformation or the load-bearing capacity of the asphalt mixture. In recent years, nanotechnology has sparked an interest in nanomodification of bituminous materials to increase the viscosity of asphalt binders and improves the rutting and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures. This paper presents the experimental results of laboratory tests on bituminous mixtures laid on a 1052 m-long test section built in Rome, Italy. Four asphalt mixtures for wearing and binder layer were considered: two polymer modified asphalt concretes (the former modified with the additive Superplast and the latter modified with styrene–butadiene–styrene), a "hard" graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) modified asphalt concrete and a not-modified mixture. The indirect tensile strength, water sensitivity, stiffness modulus, and fatigue resistance of the mixtures were tested and compared. A statistical analysis based on the results has shown that the mixtures with GNPs have higher mechanical performances than the others: GNP could significantly improve the tested mechanical performances; further studies will be carried out to investigate its effect on rutting and skid resistance. Recent studies have shown that fibers improve the performance of porous asphalt mixtures. In this study, the influence of four different fibers, (a) regular aramid fiber (RegAR), (b) aramid fiber with latex coating (ARLat), (c) aramid fiber with polyurethane coating (ARPoly), (d) aramid fiber of length 12 mm (AR12) was evaluated on abrasion resistance and toughness of the mixtures. The functional performance was estimated using permeability tests and the mechanical performance was evaluated using the Cantabro test and indirect tensile strength tests. The parameters such as fracture energy, post cracking energy, and toughness were obtained through stress-strain plots. Based on the analysis of results, it was concluded that the addition of ARLat fibers enhanced the abrasion resistance of the mixtures. In terms of ITS, ARPoly and RegAR have positively influenced mixtures under dry conditions. However, the mixtures with all aramid fibers were found to have adverse effects on the ITS under wet conditions and energy parameters of porous asphalt mixtures with the traditional percentages of bitumen in the mixture used in Spain (i.e., approximately 4.5%). The requirements imposed on road pavements are ever increasing nowadays, necessitating the improvement of the properties of paving materials. The most commonly used paving materials include bituminous mixtures that are composed of aggregate grains bound by a bituminous binder. The properties of bitumens can be improved by modification with polymers. Among the copolymers used for modifying bitumens, styrene–butadiene–styrene, a thermoplastic elastomer, is the most commonly used. This article presents the results of tests conducted on bitumens modified with two types of styrene–butadiene–styrene copolymer (linear and radial). Two bitumen types of different penetration grades (35/50 and 160/220) were used in the experiments. The content of styrene–butadiene–styrene added to the bitumen varied between 1% and 6%. The results of the force ductility test showed that cohesion energy can be used for qualitative evaluation of the efficiency of modification of bitumen with styrene–butadiene–styrene copolymer. The determined values of the cohesion energy were subjected to the original analysis taking into account the three characteristic elongation zones of the tested binders. The performed analyses made it possible to find a parameter whose values correlate significantly with the content of styrene–butadiene–styrene copolymer in the modified bitumen. With smaller amounts of added modifier (approximately 2%), slightly better effects were obtained in the case of linear copolymer styrene–butadiene–styrene and for larger amounts of modifier (5–6%) radial copolymer styrene–butadiene–styrene was found to be more effective. Over the years, the need for the synthesis of biodegradable materials has facilitated the drift of the asphalt industry towards eco-sustainable and cost-effective production of road pavements. The principal additives in the asphalt industry to improve the performance of road pavements and increase its lifespan are majorly rheological modifiers, adhesion promoters and anti-oxidant agents. Rheological modifiers increase physico-chemical properties such as transition temperature of asphalt binder (bitumen), adhesion promoters increase the affinity between binder and stone aggregates while anti-oxidant agents reduce the effects of oxidation caused by exposure to air, water and other natural elements during the production of asphalt pavements. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of a food grade bio-additive on these three aforementioned properties. We also sought to hypothesize the mechanisms by which the additive confers these desired features on bitumen. We present this study to evaluate the effects of turmeric, a food-based additive, on bitumen. As a good asphalt modifier, natural asphalt has been the focus of more attention because of its low price and ability to improve the performance of modified asphalt. In this paper, the incorporation of a natural asphalt binder in the production of bituminous materials for pavement application in China was experimentally investigated to evaluate the feasibility of such a process and its potential benefits in terms of performance. For this purpose, an asphalt binder conventionally used in the south of China was blended with various percentages of a hard natural binder obtained from the region of Selenice in Albania. The content of Selenice natural bitumen (SNB) was 80.5%, having high molecular weight and the advantages of good stability and compatibility with virgin asphalt. The physical, rheological, and mechanical properties, as well as the modification mechanism of the binder and corresponding asphalt mixture, were evaluated in the laboratory. It was observed that the hard binder improved the response of the binder blend at high and intermediate temperature; this reflected a better stability, improved moisture susceptibility, and enhanced rutting resistance of the mixture. Fluorescence microscopy showed that after dissolving, the size of the SNB modifier became smaller and its distribution was uneven, presenting three forms, granular, agglomerated, and flocculent properties. Chemical test results showed that the modification mechanism of SNB was mainly related to the enhancement of hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces caused by sulfoxide and carbonyl along with the stress concentration caused by silica particles. Molecular composition revealed that the proportion of middle molecules has reduced while the proportion of large molecules has increased. It is considered that SNB is a promising low-priced natural modifier with excellent rutting resistance properties. Nowadays, the growing energy costs and pressing worldwide demand for petroleum-based products create a strong need to develop alternative binders deriving from green and renewable sources. Bio-binders (or bitumen added to bio-based materials) can potentially be a viable alternative for the production of bituminous mixture, promoting the circular economy as well as environmental sustainability principles without reducing the overall performance of the mixture. In this context, the current study focuses on evaluation of the effects of a bio-binder on the mechanical response of asphalt concrete (AC) produced with it. In particular, a 10% bio-oil deriving from a by-product of the paper industry has been blended with a conventional 50/70 penetration grade bitumen to obtain the bio-binder. Moreover, plain bitumen having the same consistency was chosen to produce a reference AC. Two dense-graded AC wearing courses were prepared in the laboratory according to Italian technical specifications. A mechanical characterization in terms of indirect tensile strength, indirect tensile stiffness modulus, fatigue response and permanent deformation resistance was performed on gyratory compacted specimens using both conventional and performance tests. In addition, aging and water sensitivity of the AC specimens were evaluated. Overall results highlight that the AC produced with the bio-binder did not show reduced mechanical properties and it was comparable to the reference AC regardless of aging and water conditioning. The paper presents the influence of laboratory aging simulation on fracture properties determined on 150 variants of asphalt mixtures. The fracture properties were determined by two different test approaches—semi-circular bending test (SCB test) and three-point bending test on beam specimens (3-PB test). The aging was simulated according to one of the methods defined in EN 12697-52 (storage of test specimens in chamber at temperature of 85 °C for 5 days). The evaluated group of variants covered asphalt mixtures for all road layers. The group was further divided according to used bituminous binder (unmodified vs. modified) and reclaimed asphalt content. The results showed that strength parameters (flexural strength and fracture toughness) increase with aging. It further shows that fracture work provides more complex information about the cracking behavior. For the aging indexes, it was found that for mixtures with modified binders and mixtures which did not contain reclaimed asphalt (RA), the values were higher. Road construction is an activity that demands a significant amount of aggregates for bituminous mixtures. In addition, these aggregates must be of a suitable quality for use, even more so on high traffic roads. In response to this problem, and in order to avoid the extraction of new raw materials, research is being carried out using industrial waste as a substitute for conventional aggregates. In this way, the extraction of raw materials is reduced and landfilling of waste is avoided. However, these wastes must have certain properties and environmental advantages over natural aggregates. Otherwise, the use of waste would not be environmentally beneficial but would be more damaging to the environment. For this reason, this research evaluates the viability of using electric arc furnace slag as aggregates for bituminous mixtures, the main objectives being the determination of the characteristics of the by-product, the particularities and the critical points to be taken into account for its subsequent use in mixtures. At the same time, the environmental advantages of treating this waste to obtain a usable aggregate are evaluated in comparison with the processing of a natural aggregate. The results showed that electric arc furnace slags have a suitable chemical composition and excellent physical and mechanical properties for use in bituminous mixtures, even on high traffic roads. At the same time, it was determined that their use produces a considerable reduction in environmental afflictions. Therefore, it could be affirmed that the use of electric arc furnace slags in bituminous mixtures is recommendable as a way to develop more sustainable materials for construction. Today the use of Construction and Demolition Materials (CDM) can be considered as a suitable solution for the construction or the rehabilitation of road pavements. In this context, it is central to minimizing waste production, favoring the reuse through new production cycles to replace virgin natural raw materials. As illustrated in this study, steel slag has mechanical properties that justify its use as aggregate in the manufacture of bituminous mixes. In road construction, their use is focused on the substitution of fine aggregate and filler in bituminous mixtures. Mechanical characterizations, Marshall stability and indirect tensile resilient modulus (ITSM) tests were used to evaluate the laboratory performance of the mixtures. The research aims are to provide the use of these materials for the construction of the entire road pavement structure; in this study authors used these materials both in the characterization of cementitious layers and in those with bituminous conglomerate. The level of the properties of bituminous mixtures produced with water foamed bitumen relies on the optimum characteristics of the bitumen. One way to achieve the desired characteristics is to modify the bitumen with chemical additives before it is foamed. Bitumen 50/70 treated with a surface-active agent (SAA) at 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% and Fischer–Tropsch (F–T) synthetic wax at 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3.0% was used in the tests. The effect of the modifiers was investigated by assessing bitumen properties (penetration, softening point, Fraass breaking point and dynamic viscosity at 60 °C, 90 °C and 135 °C) and foam parameters (maximum expansion—ER, half-life—HL). For statistical evaluation of the test results, models of the properties of bitumen 50/70 were developed as a function of the contents of F–T synthetic wax and SAA. It was found that 2.0% F–T wax and 0.6% SAA were optimum contents for achieving the desired standard properties and foam characteristics of the tested binder. The developed models allow determining the composition of the modified binder depending on the required foam characteristics for specific applications in road construction. Asphalt is a common material that is used extensively for roadways. Furthermore, bituminous mixes have been used in railways, both as asphalt and as mortar. Different agencies and research institutes have investigated and suggested various applications. These studies indicate the benefits of bituminous material under railways, such as improving a substructure's stiffness and bearing capacity; enhancing its dynamic characteristics and response, especially under high-speed train loads; waterproofing the subgrade; protecting the top layers against fine contamination. These potential applications can improve the overall track structure performance and lead to minimizing settlement under heavy loads. They can also guarantee an appropriate response under high-speed loads, especially in comparison to a rigid slab track. This review paper documents the literature related to the utilization of asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks. This paper presents a critical review of the research in the application of asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks. Additionally, this paper reviews the design and construction recommendations and procedures for asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks as practiced in different countries. This paper also provides case studies of projects where asphalt and bituminous mixes have been utilized in railway tracks. It is anticipated that this review paper will facilitate (1) the exchange of ideas and innovations in the area of the design and construction of railway tracks and (2) the development of unified standards for the design and construction of railway tracks with asphalt and bituminous mixtures. Specifically, this article presents an evaluation of the physical, thermophysical, and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures with metallic fiber obtained from recycled tires for crack-healing purposes. Detailed results on the crack-healing of asphalt mixtures will be reported in a second article. Results showed a small reduction on the bulk density and increase in the air voids content was quantified with increasing fiber contents. The experimental results showed that mixing and compaction was more difficult for higher fiber contents due to less space for the bitumen to freely flow and fill the voids of the mixtures. Computed tomography (CT) results allowed to identify clustering and orientation of the fibers. The samples were electrically conductive, and the electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of the fiber content. Fiber content had a direct effect on the indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM) and strength (ITS) that decreased with increasing temperature for mixtures and with increase in fiber content. However, the indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR) was within acceptable limits. With the increased use of reclaimed asphalt (RA), the ability of bituminous materials to resist fatigue cracking may face a decline mainly due to the aged reclaimed asphalt binder (RAB), especially when RA is used at higher rates and not sufficiently treated. In this study, the bulk scale (asphalt) and its subscale (mortar) were employed to evaluate the effect on fatigue resistance when a RAB is added, by considering three replacement rates: 0%, 40%, and 70% RAB. The fatigue testing of asphalt mixtures was carried out using a four-point bending (4PB) setup, while the mortars were tested using a new column-like geometry utilising a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The fatigue properties were further analysed using dissipated energy concepts. The aim of this study was, first, to assess whether the inclusion of a RAB can provide at least similar fatigue properties compared to an all-virgin mix, and second, to evaluate whether the proposed treatment is beneficial for the mixtures with a RAB. The asphalt tests revealed that the inclusion of a 40% RAB led to increased fatigue resistance, whereas the mortar tests showed that the inclusion of RAB has an inverse effect on fatigue life. Cold in-place recycling with bitumen emulsion is a good environmental option for road conservation. The technique produces lower CO2 emissions because the product is manufactured and spread in the same location as the previous infrastructure, and its mixing with bitumen emulsion occurs at room temperature. Adding materials with cementitious characteristics gives the final mixture greater resistance and durability, and incorporating an industrial by-product such as ladle furnace slag (of which cementitious characteristics have been corroborated by various authors) enables the creation of sustainable, resistant pavement. This paper describes the incorporation of ladle furnace slag in reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) to execute in-place asphalt pavement recycling with bitumen emulsion. Various test groups of samples with increasing percentages of emulsion were created to study both the density of the mixtures obtained, and their dry and post-immersion compressive strength. To determine these characteristics, the physical and chemical properties of the ladle furnace slag and the reclaimed asphalt pavements were analyzed, as well as compatibility with the bitumen emulsion. The aforementioned tests define an optimal combination of RAP (90%), ladle furnace slag (10%), water (2.6%), and emulsion (3.3%), which demonstrated maximum values for compressive strength of the dry and post-immersion bituminous mixture. Different modification methods, such as adding modifiers and pretreating crumb rubber, have been developed to achieve decent engineering properties and reduce the viscosity of rubberized bitumen. This study evaluated the influence of the modification methods on the aging resistance for rubberized bitumen. Two types of crumb rubber—a 40-mesh crumb rubber and a microwave-pretreated crumb rubber—and two kinds of modifiers—Sasobit and Trans-polyoctenamer—were selected to prepare rubberized bitumen. The samples were subjected to a Thin-Film Oven Test for the simulation of the short-term aging condition, while a Pressure-Aging-Vessel test was used to simulate the long-term aging condition. The indexes of rubberized bitumen, including softening point, elastic recovery ratio, maximum load, ductility, fracture energy, phase angle, and dynamic modulus, were tested before and after aging. The result showed that trans-polyoctenamer displayed the best resistance to short-term aging, while Sasobit significantly improved the fracture energy of rubberized bitumen after short-term aging. Microwave pretreated partially destroyed the internal structure of crumb rubber, leading to a decrease of short-term aging resistance for rubberized bitumen. The compactability of an asphalt mixture is related to the heating temperature of the materials, but the heating temperature of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is limited by the production process of hot-in-plant recycled mixtures. To choose a reasonable heating temperature for RAP according to the compactability, the compaction energy ratio (CER) obtained from the Superpave gyratory compactor compaction curve was developed. The CERs of fourteen kinds of asphalt mixtures made with different RAPs were compared, all of which were different in type, content, and heating temperature. The results indicated that CER is an effective energy index to evaluate the workability of a bituminous mixture, and it considers both the accumulated energy after each gyration and the number of gyrations. It was also found that increasing the heating temperature of the RAP cannot always improve the workability of the recycled mixture, because the higher heating temperature caused more hard-aged bitumen to be blended with soft virgin bitumen during the mixing process. At the same RAP heating temperature, increasing the RAP content made it more difficult to compact the mixture, especially for RAPs with styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified bitumen, and the recycled mixtures with SBS-modified bitumen were more difficult to compact than those with nonmodified bitumen. Strength is an important parameter for the design of asphalt pavement materials and structures. To study the influence of various factors on the three-dimensional strength of asphalt mixtures, three aggregate gradations (dense-graded bituminous mixture AC-13, stone mastic asphalt SMA-13 and bituminous stabilization aggregate paving mixture OGFC-13) and two binders (SBS modified bitumen and 70# base bitumen) were used to prepare the asphalt mixture specimens. Among them, SBS+SMA-13 asphalt mixture has the best performance. On this basis, the uniaxial compressive test, uniaxial tensile test and confining triaxial test were conducted on the SBS+SMA-13 asphalt mixture under six oil-stone ratios conditions (5.5%, 5.7%, 5.9%, 6.1%, 6.3%, and 6.5%), six temperatures conditions (5 °C, 10 °C, 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C), and five loading rates conditions (1 mm/min, 2 mm/min, 3 mm/min, 4 mm/min, and 5 mm/min). In addition, a unified three-dimensional strength calculation model considering the influence of temperature, loading rate, and oil-stone ratio was proposed, and the change law of the three-dimensional strength with these above factors was revealed. Furthermore, two sets of three-factor three-level orthogonal tests were carried out on the SMA-13 asphalt mixture. The sensitivity analysis and strength regulation research between three-dimensional strength and each factor were carried out. The results show that the type of asphalt has the greatest influence on the strength of the mixture, the temperature has the second most influence, the loading rate has less influence, and the oil-stone ratio has the least influence. The strength regulations proposed to improve the strength of the asphalt mixture include the use of modified asphalt, high-temperature stability high-quality asphalt, and the lower oil-stone ratio than the Marshall optimal oil-stone ratio. The strength control measures proposed from the perspective of the three-dimensional stress state, the joint failure of each stress components and real stress states are taken into consideration.
