Due to the special geographical location, climatic characteristics, special soil properties and the flood zone of the Yellow River in Kaifeng, the groundwater level in the lower reaches of the river basin is high and contains much salt. The matrix suction and surface free energy of the Kaifeng city wall earthen site changed under capillary action, resulting in cracking, peeling and efflorescence to varying degrees. In order to reduce the deterioration of the Kaifeng city wall caused by environmental erosion, a select lime with excellent mechanical properties and waterproof methanesiliconic acid sodium salt with excellent water resistance were chosen to reinforce the earthen sites. In this paper, 0%, 3%, 5% and 7% lime, and 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% waterproof materials were selected to determine four types of imitation site soil with 16 different mix proportion samples. Further, samples with different mixing ratios were subjected to direct shear, a disintegration test, and a microscopic scanning electron microscope test. The results show that under different normal stresses, with the increase in waterproof material content, the growth rate of shear strength of imitation site soil ranges from 1.82% to 10.81%. With the increase in lime content, the shear strength of imitation site soil increases rapidly, up to 38.16%. Both materials can improve the shear strength of the soil site. Under reinforcement with the two materials, the cohesive force of the imitation site soil can be improved at a maximum rate of 59.23%, and the internal friction angle changes in the range of 36.72°–41.61°. Compared with the sample without waterproof material, the mass water absorption rate of the sample with waterproof material decreases in the range of 2.76–27.77, and with the increase in waterproof material, the mass water absorption rate of the sample gradually decreases. The effect of shot peen forming on the corrosion-resistant of 2024 aluminum alloy in a salt spray environment was studied with an electrochemical workstation. The surface morphology and cross sectional morphology of the original and shot peen-formed sample were studied by a scanning electron microscope. After shot peen forming, the salt spray corrosion resistance of 2024 aluminum alloy was worsened (the corrosion rates of the original alloy and the shot peen-formed alloy were 0.10467 mg/(cm2·h) and 0.27333 mg/(cm2·h), respectively, when the salt spray corrosion time was 5 h). The radius of capacitive reactance arc of the sample subjected to shot peen forming was smaller than that of the original sample. When the salt spray corrosion time was 5 h, the doping density (NA) of the original alloy was 2.5128 × 10−13/cm3. After shot peen forming, the NA of the alloy increased to 15 × 10−13/cm3. For the shot peen-formed sample, pitting corrosion first occurred in the crater lap zone and became severe with salt spray time. The cross sectional morphology of both original and the shot peen-formed samples shows that severe intergranular corrosion occurred in the salt spray environment. The return to the Moon is an important short-term goal of NASA and other international space agencies. To minimize mission risks, technologies, such as rovers or regolith processing systems, must be developed and tested on Earth using lunar regolith simulants that closely resemble the properties of real lunar soil. So far, no singular lunar simulant can cover the multitude of use cases that lunar regolith involves, and most available materials are poorly characterized. To overcome this major gap, a unique modular system for flexible adaptable novel lunar regolith simulants was developed and chemically characterized in earlier works. To supplement this, the present study provides comprehensive investigations regarding geotechnical properties of the three base regolith simulant systems: TUBS-M, TUBS-T, and TUBS-I. To evaluate the engineering and flow properties of these heterogeneous materials under various conditions, shear tests, particle size analyses, scanning electron microscope observations, and density investigations were conducted. It was shown that small grains <25 µm (lunar dust) are highly compressive and cohesive even at low external stress. They are particularly important as a large amount of fine dust is present in lunar regolith and simulants (x50 = 76.7 to 96.0 µm). Further, ring shear and densification tests revealed correlations with damage mechanisms caused by local stress peaks for grains in the mm range. In addition, an explanation for the occurrence of considerable differences in the literature-based data for particle sizes was established by comparing various measurement procedures. The present study shows detailed geotechnical investigations of novel lunar regolith simulants, which can be used for the development of equipment for future lunar exploration missions and in situ resource utilization under realistic conditions. This study investigated the effect of a low amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and steel fiber reinforcement on fly ash-based geopolymer composite long-term deflection and its microstructure. For testing purposes, specimens with different amounts and types of fiber reinforcement as well as plain (reference) were prepared. The long-term deflection test was performed by loading specimens with 40% of the ultimate flexural strength. A microstructure analysis was performed using polished section specimens, and images were acquired at 25-times magnification on a scanning electron microscope. The results of the flexural strength test show that all geopolymer composites with fiber reinforcement have lower flexural strength than plain geopolymer composites. The long-term deflection tests show that the highest deflections exhibit 1% PVA fiber-reinforced specimens. The lowest amount of deflection is for 1% steel fiber-reinforced specimens. Specific creep shows similar results to plain, and 1% steel fiber-reinforced specimens, while 1% PVA and 0.5% PVA/0.5% steel fiber-reinforced specimen exhibits the same properties. The quantitative microanalysis of the polished section further confirms the deflection results. Specimens with 1% PVA fiber reinforcement have significantly higher porosity than all other specimens. The article presents the dependence of the morphology as well as micromechanical and sclerometric properties of Al2O3 layers on the parameters of anodizing of aluminum alloys. The oxide layers were produced on the EN AW-5251 aluminum alloy by means of a direct current anodizing in a three-component electrolyte. The input variables (current density and electrolyte temperature) were selected based on the overall design of the experiment. The current density was 1, 2, 3 A/dm2, and the electrolyte temperature was 283, 293, 303 K. The surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and then the microscopic images were analyzed using a graphics program. The micromechanical and sclerometric properties were examined by determining the HIT hardness and three critical loads: Lc1 (critical load at which the first damage of the tested layers occurred-Hertz tensile cracks inside the crack), Lc2 (critical load at which the first cohesive damage of the layers occurred) and Lc3 (load at which the layers were completely damaged). Sclerometric tests with the use of scratch tests were supplemented with pictures from a scanning microscope, showing the scratches. The produced layers are characterized by a hardness above 3 GPa and a porosity of 4.9–10.3%. In order to control diesel exhaust emission, CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (CTA) mixed oxides were prepared and coated on perforated stainless steel (SS) filter plates, and the catalytic activities were analyzed in this work. The CeO2-SnO2 (different compositions of Ce/Sn—2:8; 1:1; 8:2) composites and Al2O3 were prepared separately via a co-precipitation approach, and CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (CTA) mixed oxides were attained by mechanical mixing of 75 wt% CeO2-SnO2 composites with 25 wt% Al2O3. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were performed for all three CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (CTA) mixed oxides; the CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (Ce/Sn-1:1) sample confirmed the presence of cubic and tetragonal mixed faces, which enhances the redox nature (catalytic activities). Various characterizations such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed on CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (Ce/Sn-1:1) sample to investigate the structural, textural, compositional, and morphological properties. The CeO2-SnO2/Al2O3 (Ce/Sn-1:1) sample was coated on a perforated stainless steel (SS) filter plate via a simple, cost-effective, and novel method, and an exhaust emission test for various compression ratios (CR), injection pressure (IP), and load (L) was completed using an AVL Digas analyzer. Surface carbonization, or charring, of wood is a one-sided modification method primarily intended for protection of exterior cladding boards. The heavily degraded surface acts as a barrier layer shielding the interior from environmental stresses, and as such acts as an organic coating. To test the durability of surfaces created in this manner, unmodified, contact charred, and flame charred spruce and birch samples were exposed to the brown rot fungus Coniophora puteana and white rot fungus Trametes versicolor for a period of nine weeks. All sides of the samples except the modified surfaces were sealed to investigate the protective effect of the surface. Mass losses were greatest for unmodified references (up to 60% and 56% for birch and spruce, respectively) and smallest for contact charred samples (up to 23% and 32%). The wood below the modified surfaces showed chemical changes typical of brown rot and simultaneous white rot. The measured glucosamine content revealed fungal biomass in both the modified surface as well as the layers beneath. According to the recorded values, the fungal biomass increased below the surface and was higher for flame charred samples in comparison to contact charred ones. This is likely due to the more intact, plasticized surface and the thicker thermally modified transition zone that restricts fungal growth more effectively in contact charred samples in comparison to the porous, cracked flame charred samples. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are a special class of materials carrying combined properties that belongs to alloys and metals according to market demands. Therefore, they are used in different areas of industry, and the properties of this type of material are useful in engineering applications. Machining of such composites is of great importance to finalize the fabrication process with improved part quality. However, the process implies several challenges due to the complexity of the cutting processes and random material structure. The current study aims to examine machinability characteristics. Effects of turning a metal matrix composite built of Al2O3 sinter, saturated with an EN AC-44000 AC-AlSi11 alloy, are presented in this paper. In the present study, a turning process of new metal matrix composites was carried out to determine the state-of-the-art material for various engineering applications. During the turning process, the cutting forces, a tool's wear, and surface roughness were investigated. Further, the SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis of cutting inserts was performed. The influence of MMC structure on the machining process and surface roughness was studied. The Al2O3 reinforcements were used in different graininess. Effects of conventional turning of the metal matrix composite with Al2O3 sinter of FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) 046 and FEPA 100 grade were compared. Results analysis of these tests showed the necessity of continuing research on turning metal matrix composites built of an AlSi alloy and Al2O3 ceramic reinforcement. The study showed the properties of MMCs that influenced machinability. In this paper, the influence of feed rate's value on surface roughness was carried out. Based on theoretical calculations, laboratory simulation research and industrial production data analysis combined with characterisations such as metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and microhardness testing, this study investigated the state of occurrence and the precipitation law of vanadium (V) in microalloyed steel to determine a reasonable production process for V microalloyed steel. The results showed that the V(C,N) precipitation phase was the main form of V in microalloyed steel that precipitated after the transformation of austenite to ferrite. The amount of V precipitation was positively correlated with the amount of V that was added. However, the precipitation temperature was not significantly correlated with the amount added. When the V content increased from 0.03% to 0.06%, the initial precipitation temperature only increased by 23 °C. The coiling temperature was identified as the core factor affecting the strength of V microalloyed steel. When the effects of precipitation strengthening and microstructure strengthening were considered, as the coiling temperature decreased, the strength first increased, then decreased and finally increased again. Under different processing conditions, the strengthening of vanadium in the material increased first and then decreased as the temperature decreased (700–200 °C). The corresponding temperatures for the best strengthening effect of aging treatment, industrial statistical data and simulating coiling were 550, 470 and 400 °C, respectively. The difference between laboratory research results and industrial production was found. When V precipitation strengthening was used to improve material properties, it was necessary to determine a reasonable quantity of V to add and the production process, according to different alloy systems, to make more effective use of V microalloyed resources. The experimental temperature is 613.15~763.15 K, and the strain rate is 0.01~10 s−1. The hot compression creep test of the 6082-T6 aluminum alloy sample is carried out by Gleeble-3500 hot compression simulation compressor, and its creep behavior is studied by scanning electron microscope. The results show that the DRX crystal has an irregular shape and that content of the Mg phase, Si phase, and Mn phase in the crystal are the main factors to change the color of DRX crystal. Temperature and strain rate are important factors affecting dynamic recrystallization. Reducing temperature and increasing strain rate will weaken dynamic recrystallization, and DRX critical condition and peak stress (strain) will increase. The constitutive equation of hot creep of 6082 aluminum alloy was established by introducing the work hardening rate-rheological stress curve, and the relationship between DRX critical condition, peak stress (strain) and parameter Z during creep was explored. Based on the Av rami equation, the prediction equation of the DRX volume fraction is established. With the increase of strain, DRX volume fraction is characterized by slow increase, then rapid increase and then slowly increase. In the hot -forming extrusion process of 6082 aluminum alloy, according to the volume fraction prediction equation, the DRX can be reduced, and the internal structure of the material can be optimized by changing the extrusion conditions and particle size. Studies on mode II fracture have promoted the establishment of the delamination theory for unidirectional composite laminates at room temperature. However, under thermal conditions, the fracture behavior of composite laminates will exhibit certain differences. The delamination theory should be extended to consider the temperature effect. To achieve this goal, in this study, the mode II static delamination growth behavior of an aerospace-grade T800/epoxy composite is investigated at 23 °C, 80 °C and 130 °C. The mode II fracture resistance curve (R-curve) is experimentally determined. A fractographic study on the fracture surface is performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), in order to reveal the failure mechanism. In addition, a numerical framework based on the cohesive zone model with a bilinear constitutive law is established for simulating the mode II delamination growth behavior at the thermal condition. The effects of the interfacial parameters on the simulations are investigated and a suitable value set for the interfacial parameters is determined. Good agreements between the experimental and numerical load–displacement responses illustrate the applicability of the numerical model. The research results provide helpful guidance for the design of composite laminates and an effective numerical method for the simulation of mode II delamination growth behavior. In this article, halloysite–lignin hybrid materials (HL) were designed and obtained. The weak hydrogen bonds found between the components were determined based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proving the achievement of class I hybrid systems. The HL systems were characterized by very good thermal stability and relatively good homogeneity, which increased as the proportion of the inorganic part increased. This was confirmed by analyzing scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and assessing particle size distributions and polydispersity indexes. Processing rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with HL systems with a content of up to 10 wt% in a Brabender torque rheometer allowed us to obtain composites with a relatively homogeneous structure confirmed by SEM observations; simultaneously, a reduction in the fusion time was noted. An improvement in PVC thermal stability of approximately 40 °C for composites with HL with a ratio of 1:5 wt/wt was noted. Regardless of the concentration of the HL system, PVC composites exhibited inconsiderably higher Young's modulus, but the incorporation of 2.5 wt% of fillers increased Charpy impact strength by 5–8 kJ/m2 and doubled elongation at break. This study demonstrated that favorable mechanical properties of PVC composites can be achieved, especially with an HL system with a ratio of 5:1 wt/wt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, ground glass powder and crushed waste glass were used to replace coarse and fine aggregates. Within the scope of the study, fine aggregate (FA) and coarse aggregate (CA) were changed separately with proportions of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 50%. According to the mechanical test, including compression, splitting tensile, and flexural tests, the waste glass powder creates a better pozzolanic effect and increases the strength, while the glass particles tend to decrease the strength when they are swapped with aggregates. As observed in the splitting tensile test, noteworthy progress in the tensile strength of the concrete was achieved by 14%, while the waste glass used as a fractional replacement for the fine aggregate. In samples where glass particles were swapped with CA, the tensile strength tended to decrease. It was noticed that with the adding of waste glass at 10%, 20%, 40%, and 50% of FA swapped, the increase in flexural strength was 3.2%, 6.3%, 11.1%, and 4.8%, respectively, in amount to the reference one (6.3 MPa). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis consequences also confirm the strength consequences obtained from the experimental study. While it is seen that glass powder provides better bonding with cement with its pozzolanic effect and this has a positive effect on strength consequences, it is seen that voids are formed in the samples where large glass pieces are swapped with aggregate and this affects the strength negatively. Furthermore, simple equations using existing data in the literature and the consequences obtained from the current study were also developed to predict mechanical properties of the concrete with recycled glass for practical applications. The findings of an extensive experimental research study on the usage of nano-sized cement powder and other additives combined to form cement–fine-aggregate matrices are discussed in this work. In the laboratory, dry and wet methods were used to create nano-sized cements. The influence of these nano-sized cements, nano-silica fumes, and nano-fly ash in different proportions was studied to the evaluate the engineering properties of the cement–fine-aggregate matrices concerning normal-sized, commercially available cement. The composites produced with modified cement–fine-aggregate matrices were subjected to microscopic-scale analyses using a petrographic microscope, a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). These studies unravelled the placement and behaviour of additives in controlling the engineering properties of the mix. The test results indicated that nano-cement and nano-sized particles improved the engineering properties of the hardened cement matrix. The wet-ground nano-cement showed the best result, 40 MPa 28th-day compressive strength, without mixing any additive compared with ordinary and dry-ground cements. The mix containing 50:50 normal and wet-ground cement exhibited 37.20 MPa 28th-day compressive strength. All other mixes with nano-sized dry cement, silica fume, and fly ash with different permutations and combinations gave better results than the normal-cement–fine-aggregate mix. The petrographic studies and the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analyses further validated the above findings. Statistical analyses and techniques such as correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis were conducted to compose a predictive equation to calculate the 28th-day compressive strength. In addition to these methods, a repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was also implemented to analyse the statistically significant differences among three differently timed strength readings. In fish processing, reducing the waste rate and increasing the economic value of products is an important issue for global environmental protection and resource sustainability. It has been discovered that cuttlefish bones can be an excellent resource for producing attractive amounts of chitin and chitosan. Therefore, this study optimized chitosan extraction conditions using response surface methodology (RSM) to establish application conditions suitable for industrial production and reducing environmental impact. In addition, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR and scanning electron microscope (SEM) characteristics of extracted chitosan were evaluated. The optimum extraction conditions for chitosan from cuttlebone chitin were 12.5M NaOH, 6 h and 80 °C, and the highest average yield was 56.47%. FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and SEM identification proved that the chitosan prepared from cuttlefish bone has a unique molecular structure, and the degree of deacetylation of chitosan was about 81.3%. In addition, it was also confirmed that chitosan has significant anti-oxidation and oil-absorbing abilities. This research has successfully transformed the by-products of cuttlefish processing into value-added products. A Ni-Cr alloyed layer was prepared on the surface of Q235 steel using double-glow plasma surface alloying (DGPSA) technology and the alloyed layer was cold-rolled with different deformation rates. The microstructure, composition distribution and phase composition of the alloyed layer were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and an electrochemical workstation. On this basis, the corrosion resistance of the alloyed layer was analyzed. The results showed that a Ni-Cr alloyed layer formed on the surface of Q235 steel following double-glow plasma nickel–chromium alloying. The alloy elements of Ni and Cr were distributed in a gradient from the outside to the inside and the main phases were FeCr0.29Ni0.16C0.06, Cr23C6 and γ solid solution. The alloyed layer, once cold-rolled with different deformation rates, underwent synchronous plastic deformation with the substrate, with no fracturing and spalling. The self-corrosion potential of the cold-rolled specimens in 5% H2SO4 and 3.5% NaCl solution is close to that of 304L stainless steel, and the corrosion currents are much lower. The present study involves detecting and determining CIP by a new electrochemical sensor based on graphene (Gr) in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) employing voltammetric techniques. Surface morphology studies of the sensing material were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). In the electroanalysis of CIP at the developed electrode, an enhanced anodic peak response was recorded, suggesting the electro-oxidation of CIP at the electrode surface. Furthermore, we evaluated the impact of the electrolytic solution, scan rate, accumulation time, and concentration variation on the electrochemical behavior of CIP. The possible electrode mechanism was proposed based on the acquired experimental information. A concentration variation study was performed using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in the lower concentration range, and the fabricated electrode achieved a detection limit of 2.9 × 10−8 M. The proposed sensor detected CIP in pharmaceutical and biological samples. The findings displayed good recovery, with 93.8% for tablet analysis and 93.3% to 98.7% for urine analysis. To study the effect of SAP incorporation on the early shrinkage of SAP internally cured concrete with the aim to solve the problems of early shrinkage and cracking of bridge leveling-layer concrete, using the SAP incorporation method as a parameter, the mechanical properties test of internally cured concrete, the shrinkage performance test of ring restraint and the scanning electron microscope observation test were carried out. The effects of the SAP content and incorporation method on the flowability, mechanical properties, shrinkage performance and microstructure of internally cured concrete were analyzed. The experimental results show that when the content of the SAP in concrete is 0.2% of the mass of cementitious materials, it has the least influence on the compressive strength of concrete. The addition of preabsorbed water to the SAP can delay early cement hydration, increase the later cement hydration rate and final hydration degree, and improve the concrete strength. Preabsorbed water mixed with an SAP can effectively improve the shrinkage of concrete, and the shrinkage reduction effect is more obvious than that from the dry addition of the SAP; the early cracking risk of concrete without an SAP is high, and it will crack before day 28. The addition of an SAP can strengthen the microstructure of concrete and improve its density and crack resistance, effectively avoiding concrete cracking. It is recommended that the water-absorbent resin be incorporated in a preabsorbent manner, and the SAP preabsorbent ratio is equal to the maximum water storage rate of the SAP. Natural soil (NS)-based geopolymers (GPs) have shown promise as environmentally friendly construction materials. The production of ordinary Portland cement is known to release significant amounts of greenhouse gas (CO2) into the atmosphere. The main objective of this work is to synthesize a geopolymer (GP) from an uncommon aluminosilicate-based NS and a sodium silicate (SS) activating solution that would not only minimize the emission of harmful gases, but also offer improved mechanical strength. Samples of different compositions were produced by varying the wt.% of NS from 50% to 80% and adding a balancing amount of SS solution. The drying and curing of the samples were carried out in an electric oven at specific temperatures. The degree of geopolymerization in the samples was measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and microstructural analysis was performed using a scanning electron microscope. Mechanical tests were conducted to evaluate the range of compressive strength values of the prepared GP samples. A minimum compressive strength of 10.93 MPa at a maximum porosity of 37.56% was observed in a sample with an NS to SS ratio of 1:1; while a ratio of 3:1 led to the maximum compressive strength of 26.39 MPa and the minimum porosity of 24.60%. The maximum strength (26.39 MPa) was found to be more than the reported strength values for similar systems. Moreover, an improvement in strength by a factor of three has been observed relative to previously developed NS-based GPs. It may be inferred from the findings that for the given NS, with almost 90% aluminosilicate content, the extent of geopolymerization increases significantly with its increasing proportions, yielding better mechanical strength. This study aimed to develop an in-situ field-repair approach, especially for aircraft composite structures, to enhance the interlaminar toughness of plain-woven composites (PWCs) by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). MWCNTs were dispersed at each interface between prepreg layers by means of solvent spraying, with a density of 1.58 g/m2. Then, the layers were stacked with the predefined sequence and cured at 120 °C and 1 bar pressure, using a heat-repairing instrument. A standard double cantilever beam (DCB) test was used to investigate the interlaminar toughening effect that was due to the MWCNTs. For comparison, original samples were also prepared. The results indicated that the introduction of MWCNTs can favorably enhance the interlaminar toughness of PWCs in a field-repair approach and the Mode I fracture energy release rate, GIC, increased by 102.92%. Based on the finite element method (FEM) of continuum damage mechanics, the original samples and the MWCNTs toughening specimen under DCB Mode I fracture were modeled and analyzed. The simulation and the experiment were in good agreement. Finally, when the toughening mechanism of MWCNTs was explored with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we found that a large amount of fiber-matrix (F-M) interface debonding and matrix cracking in mountain shape were the major modes of fracture, accompanied by a small amount of fiber breakage and matrix peeling for the MWCNTs-toughening specimens. In this study, the effects of different fine aggregates on the properties of polyethylene fiber engineered cementitious composite (PE-ECC) were systematically investigated. The PE-ECCs were prepared with four fine aggregates, respectively. Furthermore, their flowability, compressive strength, and uniaxial tensile properties were studied experimentally and comparatively analyzed by microscopic techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The results showed that all the different types of fine aggregates exhibited little effect on the flowability of PE-ECC, but a greater effect on the compressive strength, uniaxial tensile strength, and ultimate tensile strain. PE-ECC prepared from untreated desert sand showed the best comprehensive performance, with compressive strength, uniaxial tensile strength, and ultimate tensile strain of 47.92 MPa, 6.26 MPa, and 3.638%, respectively. Moreover, it was found that the ultra-fine particles in the desert sand promoted the hydration reaction of cement and produced more C–S–H gels. The pore structures of ECC prepared with different aggregates exhibited obvious fractal characteristics, and the fractal dimension ranged from 2.8 to 2.9. The fractal dimension showed a strong correlation with parameters including ultimate tensile strain and pore structure, and the larger the fractal dimension, the smaller the ultimate tensile strain, porosity, and average pore size of ECC. Textile materials modified with copper-containing particles have antibacterial and antiviral properties that have prospects for use in healthcare. In the study, textile materials were saturated with copper-containing particles in their entire material volume by the absorption/diffusion method. The antibacterial properties of modified textile materials were confirmed by their inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium that spreads predominantly through the respiratory tract. For the modification, ordinary textile materials of various origins and fiber structures were used. Technological conditions and compositions of modifying solutions were established, as well as the most suitable textile materials for modification. To assess the morphological and physical characteristics of copper-containing particles and the textile materials themselves, X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, and an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum were used. In modified textile samples, XRD data showed the presence of crystalline phases of copper (Cu) and copper (I) oxide (Cu2O). On the grounds of the SEM/EDS analysis, the saturation of textile materials with copper-containing particles depends on the structure of the textile materials and the origins of the fibers included in their composition, as well as the modification conditions and the copper precursor. High entropy alloys (HEA) are one of the modern-era alloys accelerating with greater velocity because of their excellent properties and different applications. In the present paper, we have successfully fabricated HEA (23Fe-21Cr-18Ni-20Ti-18Mn) powders by ball milling the elemental Fe, Cr, Ni, Ti, and Mn powders for 15 h. The advancement of the milling process and phase transformation of HEAs were studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The crystallite size and the lattice strain of the HEA were calculated by using the Williamson-Hall (W-H) equation and the values were found to be 7 nm and 0.0176%, respectively. Similarly, the true lattice parameter was calculated using the Nelson–Riley (N-R) extrapolation method, and the value was found to be 3.544 Å. We have successfully investigated the electrochemical response of 15 h ball milled 23Fe-21Cr-18Ni-20Ti-18Mn HEA powders to determine the ascorbic acid (AA) using cyclic voltammetry. We have modified the carbon paste electrode with ball milled HEA of concentrations 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mg, and among them, 8 mg HEA modified carbon paste electrode (HEA-MCPE) depicted the highest current sensitivity. We reported the effect of modifier concentration, analyte concentration, scan rate, and pH on the oxidation peak of AA. The electrochemical active surface area of carbon paste and MCPE was calculated using the Nernst equation and the values were found to be 0.0014 cm2 and 0.0027 cm2, respectively. In this work, mechanical properties of reinforced polypropylene composites were studied. PP in particulates shape with two different melt flow indexes (MFI) was used, i.e., 3 and 23 g/10 min, namely PP3 and PP23, respectively. Three different materials, namely TiO2 nanoparticle (nTiO2, spherical, 0D), micro-size short carbon fiber (SCF, fiber, 1D), and graphite nanoplatelet (GNP, sheet, 2D), were used as reinforcements/fillers. PP and fillers (in the desired composition) were first pre-mixed by a mechanical mixer. The mixture was then fed to a co-rotating twin-screw extruder for melt-compounding, followed by injection molding to fabricate testing samples. The microstructure and fracture surface of the composites were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical properties. The SEM images stipulate that PP23 had better adhesion and dispersion with the fillers. The results from the SEM images support the mechanical testing results. PP23 composites exhibited more significant improvement in mechanical properties in comparison to PP3. At 5 wt. % filler loading, PP/GNP composite exhibited a greater improvement in mechanical properties compared with two other composites, which are PP/SCF and PP/nTiO2 composites for both PPs. The magnesium AZ31 alloy was swaged with rotary pressure with the aim of redefining the microstructure and improving mechanical and fatigue properties. The rotary swaging process and subsequent ageing improved the yield stress in tension and compression. In the present study, the investigation was focused on fatigue behaviour. The samples were cycled in a symmetric regime with a frequency of 35 Hz. A dependence of the stress amplitude on the number of cycles up to the fracture was estimated. The microstructure of the samples and fracture surfaces was analysed with a scanning electron microscope. The fatigue process was influenced by the pronounced texture formed in the swaging process. The fatigue properties of the swaged samples improved substantially—the endurance limit based on 107 cycles was approximately 120 MPa—compared to those of the cast alloy. In this study, the effect of waste glass on the mechanical properties of concrete was examined by conducting a series of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength tests. According to this aim, waste glass powder (WGP) was first used as a partial replacement for cement and six different ratios of WGP were utilized in concrete production: 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. To examine the combined effect of different ratios of WGP on concrete performance, mixed samples (10%, 20%, 30%) were then prepared by replacing cement, and fine and coarse aggregates with both WGP and crashed glass particles. Workability and slump values of concrete produced with different amounts of waste glass were determined on the fresh state of concrete, and these properties were compared with those of plain concrete. For the hardened concrete, 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm cubic specimens and cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm were tested to identify the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of the concrete produced with waste glass. Next, a three-point bending test was carried out on samples with dimensions of 100 × 100 × 400 mm, and a span length of 300 mm to obtain the flexure behavior of different mixtures. According to the results obtained, a 20% substitution of WGP as cement can be considered the optimum dose. On the other hand, for concrete produced with combined WGP and crashed glass particles, mechanical properties increased up to a certain limit and then decreased owing to poor workability. Thus, 10% can be considered the optimum replacement level, as combined waste glass shows considerably higher strength and better workability properties. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed to investigate the microstructure of the composition. Good adhesion was observed between the waste glass and cementitious concrete. Lastly, practical empirical equations have been developed to determine the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexure strength of concrete with different amounts of waste glass. Instead of conducting an experiment, these strength values of the concrete produced with glass powder can be easily estimated at the design stage with the help of proposed expressions. In this study, low-iron Zn–Fe alloy coatings and pure Zn coatings, with or without trivalent chromium passivation treatment, were electrodeposited onto a sintered NdFeB magnet from a weak acid chloride bath. The surface morphology and structure of the coatings were then examined using the X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope and 3D white-light interfering surface analysis. Meanwhile, the electrodeposition behavior and anti-corrosive properties of the coatings were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and natural salt spray tests. The results indicate that a passivated Zn–Fe alloy coating with a 0.9 wt.% Fe content provided much better corrosion resistance than a pure Zn coating and could provide both anodic protection and physical barrier function in the NdFeB substrates. The Fe element in Zn–Fe alloy coating was predominantly in solid solution in η-phase and small amounts in elemental form, which was beneficial to acquire a compact coating and passivation film. Finally, the passivated Zn–Fe alloy coating withstood 210 h against a neutral 3.5 wt.% NaCl salt spray without any white rust, which was 3–4 times longer than the pure Zn coating. Ecological concrete could reduce the environment impacts of the tremendous construction of infrastructures due to its favorability to plant growth. Nonetheless, the alkalinity of the ecological concrete is usually too high when using ordinary Portland cement (OPC). To solve this problem, the magnesium ammonium phosphate cement (MPC) was used to prepare a novel porous ecological concrete instead of OPC. The pH value and compressive strength of MPC were analyzed and the pore structure was evaluated. The chemical composition and morphology were investigated by an X-ray diffraction test and scanning electron microscope observation. In addition, the void ratio, compressive strength and planting-growing characteristic of MPC-based porous ecological concrete were also studied. The pH value of the MPC suspension ranged from 6.8 to 8.5, which was much lower than that of OPC. The pH value of MPC gradually increased with the increment of phosphorus/magnesium molar ratio (P/M) and the compressive strength reached a maximum value of 49.2 MPa when the P/M value was 1/4. Fly ash (FA) and ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) could improve the pore structure and compressive strength; however, the pH value was slightly increased. As the paste-to-aggregate ratio increased, the void ratio of concrete gradually decreased, while the compressive strength gradually increased. The meadow grass was planted in the MPC-based ecological concrete, and the seeds germinated in one week and showed a better growth status than those planted in the OPC-based ecological concrete. MAX phases are promising candidate structural materials for lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) and accelerator-driven sub-critical systems (ADSs) due to their excellent corrosion resistance in liquid LBE. In this work, one of the typical MAX phases, Ti3SiC2, was exposed to the flowing LBE with a saturated oxygen concentration at 500 °C for up to 3000 h. The corrosion behaviors, including the evolution of the corrosion layer, mechanical properties and wettability, were evaluated via X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray, a microhardness test and contact angle measurement. The results reveal that a corrosion structure with a duplex layer was formed on the sample surfaces. The outer layer was a diffusion layer, which always remained thin (<3 μm) during the whole test due to the erosion effect caused by the flowing LBE. The inner layer was the stable protective oxide layer, and its thickness increased with exposure time. The growth of the corrosion structure improved the microhardness and reduced the wettability with regard to LBE, which was beneficial to inhibiting further surface corrosion of Ti3SiC2. The effects of La and Y on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-Si-Cu alloys were investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscope (OM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the addition of La and Y had a great effect on the refinement of α-Al grains, the modification of eutectic Si phase, and the reduction of β-Al5FeSi length in Al-Si-Cu alloys. The A380 + 0.6 wt.% La/Y alloy exhibited the best microstructure and mechanical properties. The UTS and EI of the A380 + 0.6 wt.% La/Y alloy were 215.3 MPa and 5.1%, which were 22.9% and 37.8% higher than those of the matrix alloy, respectively. In addition, neither Al11La3 nor Al3Y generated by the addition of La and Y could not serve as the nucleation core of α-Al grains, so the grain refinement of α-Al originated from the growth limitation and constitutional supercooling. Since La and Y promote twinning generation and constitutional supercooling, the eutectic Si phase also changed from stripe-like to short fibrous or even granular and was significantly refined. Furthermore, thermodynamic calculations indicated that the Al11La3 phase was formed first and the Al3Y phase was generated on the Al11La3 phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochar has been used in various applications, e.g., as a soil conditioner and in remediation of contaminated water, wastewater, and gaseous emissions. In the latter application, biochar was shown to be a suitable alternative to activated carbon, providing high treatment efficiency. Since biochar is a by-product of waste pyrolysis, its use allows for compliance with circular economics. Thus, this research aims to obtain a detailed characterization of three carbonaceous materials: an activated carbon (CARBOSORB NC 1240®) and two biochars (RE-CHAR® and AMBIOTON®). In particular, the objective of this work is to compare the properties of three carbonaceous materials to evaluate whether the application of the two biochars is the same as that of activated carbon. The characterization included, among others, particle size distribution, elemental analysis, pH, scanning electron microscope, pore volume, specific surface area, and ionic exchange capacity. The results showed that CARBOSORB NC 1240® presented a higher specific surface (1126.64 m2/g) than AMBIOTON® (256.23 m2/g) and RE-CHAR® (280.25 m2/g). Both biochar and activated carbon belong to the category of mesoporous media, showing a pore size between 2 and 50 nm (20–500 Å). Moreover, the chemical composition analysis shows similar C, H, and N composition in the three carbonaceous materials while a higher O composition in RE-CHAR® (9.9%) than in CARBOSORB NC 1240 ® (2.67%) and AMBIOTON® (1.10%). Differences in physical and chemical properties are determined by the feedstock and pyrolysis or gasification temperature. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) is a critical property of metastable β Ti alloys in aerospace applications. In this work, the HCF behavior and corresponding microscale deformation mechanisms of a metastable Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe (Ti55511) alloy with a basket-weave structure were investigated. HCF and its deformation mechanisms of a Ti55511 alloy were systematically studied in the deformed condition by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that the Ti55511 alloy exhibited an excellent HCF strength (107 cycles, Kt = 1, R = 0.06) of 738 MPa. The fractographic investigation demonstrated that fatigue striations and secondary cracks were the main features in the crack initiation zone. Dislocation analyses indicated that the HCF deformation of the basket-weave microstructure was mainly affected by the dislocation slipping of the primary α (αp) phase. In addition, the dislocation pile-up at the αp/βtrans interface led to crack initiation. EBSD analyses indicated that the prismatic type slip system of the αp phase was preferentially activated during the HCF deformation process of the Ti55511 alloy, followed by the basal type and pyramid type systems. The effects of laser welding parameters on the interface microstructure of AZ31B magnesium alloy and 304 stainless steel were investigated. After welding, a scanning electron microscope and ultra-depth of field microscope were used to observe the microstructure of the welded material, to analyze the effects of power on the interface morphology. The simulation of laser welding of magnesium and steel was carried out by the COMSOL software. The results showed that when the power was 15 W–20 W, the temperature did not reach the melting point of magnesium alloy, there was MgO at the welding, and the interface had poor connection strength. When the power was 35 W–50 W, the temperature reached or even exceeded the boiling point of magnesium alloy, and the interface formed hot cracks, pores, and oxides and had poor joint strength. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is an additive manufacturing process based on the arc welding process in which wire is melted by an electric arc and deposited layer by layer. Due to the cost and rate benefits over powder-based additive manufacturing technologies and other alternative heat sources such as laser and electron beams, the process is currently receiving much attention in the industrial production sector. The gas metal arc welded (GMAW) based WAAM process provides a higher deposition rate than other methods, making it suitable for additive manufacturing. The fabrication of mild steel (G3Si1), austenitic stainless steel (SS304), and a bimetallic sample of both materials were completed successfully using the GMAW based WAAM process. The microstructure characterization of the developed sample was conducted using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The interface reveals two discrete zones of mild steel and SS304 deposits without any weld defects. The hardness profile indicates a drastic increase in hardness near the interface, which is attributed to chromium migration from the SS304. The toughness of the sample was tested based on the Charpy Impact (ASTM D6110) test. The test reveals isotropy in both directions. The tensile strength of samples deposited by the WAAM technique measured slightly higher than the standard values of weld filament. The deep hole drilling (DHD) method was used to measure the residual stresses, and it was determined that the stresses are compressive in the mild steel portion and tensile in austenitic stainless steel portion, and that they vary throughout the thickness due to variation in the cooling rate at the inner and outer surfaces. In this study, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites reinforced with carbon fibers (CFs) and graphite (Gr) were fabricated by compressive molding technology. The friction and wear properties of the PEEK/PTFE composites sliding against Si3N4 balls were investigated using ball-on-disk configuration under dry sliding conditions, and the morphologies of the worn surfaces were also observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a three-dimensional morphometer. The results indicated that the introduction of CFs significantly improved the tribological properties of the composites, but the friction coefficient of the PEEK/PTFE/CFs composites were higher than the pure PEEK/PTFE composites. However, it was found that a combinative addition of CFs and Gr creates an obvious synergetic effect of improving the friction-reducing and anti-wear abilities of the composites. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrofluoric acid (HF) and conditioning time on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) between dual-cure resin cement and glass-ceramic materials, such as lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) (EX) and leucite-reinforced ceramic (IPS Empress CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) (EP), and also a hybrid ceramic (Vita Enamic, Vita Zahnfabrik) (VE). Eighteen sections with 1 mm thickness were cut from each CAD/CAM material and randomly divided into three groups, according to the surface etching time (30 s, 60 s, 90 s). The surface treatment was performed using 9.5% HF acid gel, then resin cement was applied on the prepared ceramic plates and light cured. µSBS values between resin cement and the ceramic material were measured with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until the failure occurred. The fractured surfaces of specimens were microscopically evaluated, and failure modes were classified as: adhesive between resin cement and ceramic, cohesive within ceramic or cement and mixed failure. Surface roughness of etched samples was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Obtained data were statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni post hoc test with a level of significance α = 0.05. The results of the statistical methods applied indicate that µSBS mean difference for leucite-reinforced ceramic (EP) was statistically significant (p < 0.05). (1) Mud pulser carbide rotors, as a core component of ground communication in crude oil exploration, are often subjected to mud erosion and acid corrosion, resulting in pitting pits on the surface, which affects the accuracy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acid corrosion and erosion behavior of cemented carbide materials and provide a reference for the wider application of cemented carbide materials in the petrochemical industry. (2) Experimental samples of tungsten–cobalt carbide were sintered at a low pressure by powder metallurgy. The petrochemical application environment was simulated by accelerated salt spray corrosion and solid slurry erosion with the aid of acidic copper, and the experimental phenomena were analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscope), EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), and XRD (X-ray diffraction). (3) The experimental results show that the coercivity of the pitted cobalt-cemented tungsten carbide prepared in this study was 17.89 KA/m, and the magnetic saturation strength was 14.42 G·cm3/g. The corrosion rate was the fastest during the acidic copper acceleration experiments from 4 h to 16 h, and the corrosion products of WCo3 and Co3O4 were generated on the corrosion surface. The maximum erosion rate of 0.00104 in the erosion experiment corresponds to a corrosion sample with a corrosion time of 36 h. (4) Therefore, the coercive magnetic force and magnetic saturation strength could be derived from the prepared carbide hard phase grains and carbon content in the appropriate range. The corrosion product in the corrosion process slowed the corrosion rate, and a large amount of cobalt and a small amount of tungsten was lost by oxidation during the corrosion process. The corrosion time had the greatest effect on the erosion performance of the carbide, and the long corrosion time led to surface sparseness, which reduced the erosion resistance. Al–Zn composite coating can provide effective cathodic protection for E235 steel. This study aims to obtain the Al–Zn composite coating with the best anti-corrosion performance by optimizing the spraying temperature, spraying distance and powder-feeding motor speed. The Al and Zn powders were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the microstructure of the coatings prepared by different process parameters was observed by optical microscope. The mechanical and anticorrosive properties of the coating were evaluated using hardness, porosity, thickness and electrochemical tests. According to the experimental results, when the spraying temperature, spraying distance and powder-feeding motor speed were 500 °C, 27 mm and 1.5 r/min, respectively, the hardness of the coating was 67 HV, the porosity was 0.57% and the thickness was 0.588 mm. An increasing amount of waste seashells in China has caused serious environmental pollution and resource waste. This paper aims to solve these problems by using waste seashells as modified materials to prepare high-performance modified asphalt. In this study, seashell powder (SP) and stratum corneum-exfoliated seashell powder (SCESP) were adopted to prepare 10%, 20% and 30% of seashell powder-modified asphalt (SPMA) and stratum corneum-exfoliated seashell powder-modified asphalt (SCESPMA) by the high-speed shear apparatus, respectively. The appearance and composition of two kinds of SPs were observed and determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The types of functional groups, temperature frequency characteristics, low temperature performance and adhesion of SPMA were tested by the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR) and contact angle meter. The results show that the SP and SCESP are rough and porous, and their main component is CaCO3, which is physically miscible to asphalt. When the loading frequency ranges from 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz, the complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) of SPMA and SCESPMA increase and decrease, respectively. At the same load frequency, SCESPMA has a larger G* and a smaller δ than SPMA. At the same temperature, SCESPMA has a larger rutting factor (G*/sin δ) and better high-temperature deformation resistance than SPMA. SP and SCESP reduce the low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt, of which SCESP has a more adverse effect on the low-temperature performance of asphalt than SP. When SP and SCESP are mixed with asphalt, the cohesion work (Waa), adhesion work (Was) and comprehensive evaluation parameters of water stability (ER1, ER2 and ER3) of asphalt are improved. It is shown that both SP and SCESP have good water damage resistance, of which SCESP has better water damage resistance than SP. Diffusion aluminum coating is crucial to protect aero-engine turbine blades from high-temperature oxidation. Slurry aluminizing, as a commonly-used coating preparation technology, has variations in the process parameters that directly affect the quality of the coating. Therefore, this paper investigates the effect of slurry thickness on coating quality. Different forms of aluminized coatings were obtained by coating nine DZ22B nickel-based superalloy plates of the same size with different slurry thicknesses while keeping other parameters constant. These aluminized coatings were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and a surface gauge. The results show that the AlNi phase dominates the matrix of the aluminized coating, and the outer layer of the coating has white dotted precipitates of Cr. As the slurry thickness increases, the coating thickness increases, and the proportion of the outer layer in the overall coating increases. In contrast, the thickness of the interdiffusion layer does not change significantly. The thicker the slurry, the higher the Al content of the coating surface. A medium-thickness slurry can form a smooth aluminizing coating with a roughness Ra < 4.5 μm surface. The combined results show that a medium-thick slurry can produce a high-quality coating. The aim of this study was to apply waste wood particles (WP) with different sizes from primary wood processing as a filler for open-cell PUR foams. For this purpose, various wood particle sizes were added as a filler for polyurethane foams (PUR). The effects of the addition of of 0.05–<0.125 mm, 0.125–<0.315 mm, 0.315–1.25 mm, and >1.25–2.0 of WP to the polyurethane matrix on the density, the kinetics of PUR foaming, the cell structure, and the morphology were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray computer tomography were used. Based on the results, it was found that the addition of WP in the amount of 10% leads to an increase in density with an increase in particle size. The research shows that the morphology of the PUR-WP foam is influenced by its particle size. The difference in the number and size of cells in PUR-WP composites depends on the wood particle size. The addition of dust causes the formation of cells of much smaller sizes; confirmed by SEM images. Biofilms have caused many problems, not only in the industrial fields, but also in our daily lives. Therefore, it is important for us to control them by evaluating them properly. There are many instrumental analytical methods available for evaluating formed biofilm qualitatively. These methods include the use of Raman spectroscopy and various microscopes (optical microscopes, confocal laser microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscopes, atomic force microscopes, etc.). On the other hand, there are some biological methods, such as staining, gene analyses, etc. From the practical viewpoint, staining methods seem to be the best due to various reasons. Therefore, we focused on the staining method that used a crystal violet solution. In the previous study, we devised an evaluation process for biofilms using a color meter to analyze the various staining situations. However, this method was complicated and expensive for practical engineers. For this experiment, we investigated the process of using regular photos that were quantified without any instruments except for digitized cameras. Digitized cameras were used to compare the results. As a result, we confirmed that the absolute values were different for both cases, respectively. However, the tendency of changes was the same. This paper investigates the possibility of integrating the combination of nanofillers, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) into the thermoplastic polymer matrix. This combination of fillers can possibly modify the physico-chemical properties of composites compared to the pure polymer matrix. The composites were blended using the extrusion method. The composite filament produced was used to manufacture static mixers on a 3D printer using the additive manufacturing technology fused filament fabrication (FFF). The aim of this work was to inspect the influence of the filler addition on the thermal and mechanical properties of glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET-G) polymer composites. The fillers were added to the PET-G polymer matrix in several ratios. Tensile test results showed an increase in the overall strength and decrease in the elongation at break of the material. Melt flow rate (MFR) showed a decrease in the viscosity with the initial filler addition and reaching a plateau after 2 wt% filler was added. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed minor changes in the thermal properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed homogenous distribution of the filler in the matrix and strong filler–matrix adhesion. In this study, the drilling performance of biodegradable grade Mg-9Al-1.4Zn alloy reinforced with hollow thin-walled Al2O3 microspheres is inspected under different coolant environments such as dry, Almag® mineral oil, and liquid nitrogen. Drilling experiments were carried out using titanium aluminum nitride PVD coated and uncoated K10 tools on varying volume fractions of magnesium syntactic foams (5%, 10%, and 15%) reinforced with hollow Al2O3 microspheres. Test results showed a 30–60% higher thrust force generated with liquid nitrogen drilling in comparison to dry and oil-based drilling while cutting higher volume fraction foams. Higher microsphere volume fractions of syntactic foam recorded higher machining forces, which is roughly a 200% increase as the volume fraction raised to 15%. The performance of TiAlN PVD tool coating is reflected through a reduction in thrust forces by 20% during cryogenic drilling. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation of cryogenic-machined bore surfaces showed minimal drilling-induced surface defects compared to dry and Almag® mineral oil conditions. A three-dimensional, thermo-mechanical finite element-based model for drilling Mg-9Al-1.4Zn syntactic foam using AdvantEdgeTM is developed for different sustainable lubrication conditions. Surface finish (Ra) showed a 45–55% improvement during cryogenic drilling of 15% syntactic foams with minimized subsurface damages compared to dry and wet cutting conditions. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the radiopacity and surface morphology of AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer (AHPB), Bio-C Sealer (BIOC), Biodentine (BD), BioRoot RCS (BR), Grey-MTAFlow (GMF), White-MTAFlow (WMF), TotalFill BC Sealer (TF), and TotalFill BC Sealer HiFlow (TFHF) at different time moments—30 min, 24 h, and 28 days. Ten specimens of each material were prepared according to the ISO-6876:2012 standard and radiographed next to an aluminum step wedge using a digital sensor. The specimens were stored in a gelatinized Hank's balanced salt solution at 37 °C between assessments. The mean grayscale values of each specimen were converted into equivalent aluminum thickness by a linear regression model. Characterization of the surface morphology was performed by using a scanning electron microscope at ×4.0k and ×10.0k magnifications. The radiographic analysis revealed that all the tested materials exceeded the ISO-specified limit of 3 mm Al, with the highest radiopacity presented by AHPB and the lowest by BD. None of the tested materials demonstrated considerable variances between the 30 min and the 24 h radiopacity level (p < 0.05), and statistically significant long-term radiopacity changes were exhibited by BR, TFHF, and TF (p > 0.05). All the specimens demonstrated a common feature of limited precipitate formation, with numerous unreacted particles still presented on the surface after 24 h, whereas the particle rearrangement and the deposition of precipitates were clearly observed after 28 days. The influence of sodium fluoride (NaF) concentration in mouthwashes on the properties of superelastic NiTi orthodontic wires has been studied. In this work, 55.8%Ni and 44.2%Ti (in weight) wires were introduced in commercial mouthwashes with different NaF contents (0, 130, 200 and 380 ppm). The release of Ni2+ and Ti4+ ions was by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) at 1, 4, 7 and 14 days. Superelastic orthodontic wires present at oral temperature the austenitic phase which is transformed into a plastic phase (martensite) by cooling. The temperatures at which this occurs are influenced by the chemical composition. The release of ions from the wire will produce variations in the temperatures and stresses of the stress-induced martensitic transformation. Ms, Mf, As, Af were determined by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). The transformation stresses (austenite to stress induce martensite) were determined with a servo-hydraulic testing machine at 37 °C. The surfaces for the different times and mouthwash were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The release of Ni2+ in mouthwashes with 380 ppm NaF concentrations reaches 230,000 ppb in 14 days and for Ti4+ 175,000 ppb. When NaF concentrations are lower than 200 ppm the release of Ni and Ti ions is around 1500 ppb after 14 days. This variation in compositions leads to variations in Ms from 27 °C to 43.5 °C in the case of higher NaF concentration. The increasing immersion time and NaF concentrations produce a decrease of Ni in the wires, increasing Ms which exceed 37 °C with the loss of superelasticity. In the same way, the stresses (tooth position corrective) decrease from 270 MPa to 0 MPa due to the martensitic phase. The degradation can produce the growth of precipitates rich in Ti (Ti2Ni). These results are of great interest in the orthodontic clinic in order to avoid the loss of the therapeutic properties of superelastic NiTi due to long immersion in fluoride mouthwashes. The tribological performance of a glass fiber reinforced polyamide66 (GFRPA66) composite with varying fiber weight percentage (wt.%) [30 wt.% and 35 wt.%] is investigated in this study using a pin-on-disc tribometer. GFRPA66 composite specimens in the form of pins with varying percentages of fiber viz., 30 wt.% and 35 wt.% are fabricated by an injection molding process. Tribological performances, such as coefficient of friction (COF) and the specific wear rate (SWR), are investigated. The factors affecting the wear of GFRPA66 composites [with 30 wt.% and 35 wt.% reinforcements] are identified based on the process parameters such as load, sliding velocity, and sliding distance. Design Expert 13.0 software is used for the experimental data analysis, based on the design of experiments planned in accordance with the central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) technique. The significance of the obtained results are analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques. To attain minimum SWR and COF, the wear performance is optimized in dry sliding conditions. The analysis of experimental data revealed that SWR and COF increased with increasing load, sliding velocity, and sliding distance for GFRPA66 [30 wt.%], but decreased with increasing polyamide weight percentage. The SWR for a maximum load of 80 N, and for a sliding velocity of 0.22 m/s, and a sliding distance of 3500 m for GFRPA66 composite specimens with 30 wt.% reinforcements are found to be 0.0121 m3/Nm, while the SWR for the same set of parameters for GFRPA66 composite specimens with 35 wt.% reinforcements are found to be 0.0102 m3/Nm. The COF for the GFRPA66 composite specimens with 30 wt.% reinforcements for the above set of parameters is found to be 0.37, while the GFRPA66 composite specimens with 35 wt.% reinforcements showed significant improvement in wear performance with a reduction in COF to 0.25. Hydrogels belong to the group of polymers that are more and more often considered as innovative dressing materials. It is important to develop materials showing the most advantageous properties from the application viewpoint wherein in the case of hydrogels, the type and the amount of the crosslinking agent strongly affect their properties. In this work, PVP-based hydrogels containing Aloe vera juice and L-ascorbic acid were obtained via UV-induced polymerization. Next, their surface morphology (via both optical, digital and scanning electron microscope), sorption capacity, tensile strength, and elongation were characterized. Their structure was analyzed via FT-IR spectroscopy wherein their impact on the simulated body liquids was verified via regular pH and temperature measurements of these liquids during hydrogels' incubation. It was demonstrated that as the amount of the crosslinker increased, the polymer structure was more wrinkled. Next, hydrogels showed relatively smooth and only slightly rough surface, which was probably due to the fact that the modifiers filled also the outer pores of the materials. Hydrogels demonstrated buffering properties in all incubation media, wherein during the incubation the release of Aloe vera juice probably took place as evidenced by the decrease in the pH of the incubation media and the disappearance of the absorption band deriving from the polysaccharides included in the composition of this additive. Next, it was proved that as the amount of the crosslinker increased, hydrogels' crosslinking density increased and thus their swelling ratio decreased. Hydrogels obtained using a crosslinking agent with higher average molecular weight showed higher swelling ability than the materials synthesized using crosslinker with lower average molecular weight. In the present study, microstructural evolution and hardness of the friction stir processed (FSPed) SAF 2507 super duplex stainless steel fabricated at a rotational speed of 650 rpm and a traverse speed of 60 mm/min were investigated. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) detector was used to study the microstructure of the stir zone. The grain sizes of austenite and ferrite in the FSPed 2507 were found to be smaller (0.75 and 0.96 μm) than those of the substrate (6.6 and 5.6 μm) attributed to the occurrence of continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) in both phases. Higher degree of grain refinement and DRX were obtained at the advancing side of the FSPed specimens due to higher strain and temperature. This work investigates an electrochemical impedance analysis based on synthesized TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) photoanodes, which were fabricated via electrospinning and calcination. The investigated photoanode substrate NFs were studied in terms of physicochemical tools to investigate their morphological character, crystallinity, and chemical contents via scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. As a result, the studied photoanode substrate NFs were applied to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), and the electrochemical impedance analysis (EIS) was studied in terms of equivalent circuit fitting and impacts of N-doping, the latter of which was approved via XPS analysis.
