Ambient pressure drying (APD) of silica aerogels has emerged as an attractive method adapting to large-scale production. Spring-back is a unique phenomenon during APD of silica aerogels with volume expansion after its shrinkage under capillary force. We attribute the intense spring-back at elevated drying temperatures to a dense structure formed on the surface and the formation of positive internal pressure. Furthermore, an APD-assisted foaming method with an in situ introduction of NH4HCO3 was proposed. NH4HCO3 decomposing at drying temperatures hastened the emergence of positive pressure, thereby increasing the expansion volume. Compared to the previous method, the porosity of silica aerogel increased from 82.2% to 92.6%, and mesopore volume from 1.79 cm3 g−1 to 4.54 cm3 g−1. By adjusting the amount of the silicon source, silica aerogels prepared by the APD-assisted foaming method generated higher volume expansion and lower thermal conductivity. After calcination to remove undecomposed ammonium salts, the hydrophobic silica aerogel with a density of 0.112 g cm−3 reached a mesopore volume of 5.07 cm3 g−1 and a thermal conductivity of 18.9 mW m−1·K−1. This strategy not only improves the thermal insulation properties, but also offers a significant advancement in tailoring silica aerogels with specific porosity and mesopore volume for various applications. The optimization of structure and thermal properties in 3D-printed insulation materials remains an underexplored area in the literature. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of 3D printing on the thermal properties of manufactured cellular composites. The materials studied were closed-cell foams with a complex cell structure based on the Voronoi cell model, manufactured using incremental technology (3D printing). The influence of the cellular structure of the composite, the type of material used, and the number of layers in the composite structure on its thermal properties, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal resistance, and coefficient of heat transfer, was analyzed. Samples of different types of thermosetting resins, characterized by different values of emissivity coefficient, were analyzed. It was shown that both the type of material, the number of layers of the composite, and the number of pores in its structure significantly affect its thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity and permeability depended on the number of layers and decreased up to 30% as the number of layers increased from one to four, while thermal resistance increased to 35%. The results indicate that material structure is key in regulating thermal conduction. Controlling the number of cells in a given volume of composite (and thus the size of the air cells) and the number of layers in the composite can be an effective tool in designing materials with high insulation performance. Among the prototype composites produced, the best thermal performance was that of the metalized four-layer cellular composites (λ = 0.035 ± 0.002 W/m·K, Rc = 1.15 ± 0.02 K·m2/W, U = 0.76 ± 0.01 W/m2·K). The purpose of this study was to model the thermal insulating properties in an exemplary multi-layer layup of space suits utilizing computer simulation techniques and physics and mathematical models. The main system responsible for thermal insulation is the Thermal Micrometeoroid Garment (TMG) material layup. Its structure consists of eight layers with different functions. The utilized textile materials are Rip-Stop-type fabrics, strengthened with the addition of a stronger fiber at fixed intervals. The state variable in thermal problems is the temperature field inside the analyzed TMG. The results obtained from the computer simulation were compared to verification calculations from the mathematical model, which allowed for an assessment of the models' quality and the obtained results. Two numerical models were analyzed in Ansys Workbench software. This enabled an assessment of the model's quality and the possible discrepancies. The modeling of the structure was carried out using the Finite Element Method. Modelling effective thermal properties is crucial for optimizing the thermal performance of materials such as new green insulating fibrous media. In this study, a numerical model is proposed to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of these materials. The fibers are considered to be non-overlapping and randomly oriented in space. The numerical model is based on the finite element method. Particular attention is paid to the accuracy of the results and the influence of the choice of the representative elementary volume (REV) for calculation (cubic or rectangular parallelepiped slice). The calculated effective thermal conductivity of fibrous media under different boundary conditions is also investigated. A set of usual mixed boundary conditions is considered, alongside the uniform temperature gradient conditions. The REV rectangular slice and uniform temperature gradient boundary conditions provide a more accurate estimate of the effective thermal conductivity and are therefore recommended for use in place of the usual cubic representative elementary volume and the usual mixed boundary conditions. This robust model represents a principal novelty of the work. The results are compared with experimental and analytical data previously obtained in the literature for juncus maritimus fibrous media, for different fiber volume fractions, with small relative deviations of 7%. Analytical laws are generally based on simplified assumptions such as infinitely long fibers, and may neglect heat transfer between different phases. The layered fibers of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites exhibit low thermal conductivity (TC) throughout their thickness due to the poor TC of the polymeric resin. Improved heat transmission inside the hydrogen storage tank during the filling process can reduce further compression work, and improved heat insulation can minimize energy loss. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the thermal properties of composites. This paper reports the thermal behavior of plain-woven CFRP composite using simulation at the micro-, meso-, and macro-scales. The TC was predicted numerically and compared to experimental findings and analytical models. Good results were found. Using the approach of multi-scale modeling, a parametric study was carried out to analyze in depth the influence of certain variables on thermal properties. The study revealed that both fiber volume fraction and temperature significantly influenced the TC of the composite, with the interphase fiber/matrix thickness following closely in terms of impact. Three-dimensional (3D) spacer fabric has the characteristics of a light weight and high strength, and its unique three-dimensional structure gives it great potential for development in terms of insulation. For the purpose of further improving the thermal insulation performance of 3D spacer fabric, the fabric was treated with silica aerogel while solving the problem of powdering during use. Firstly, the electronic Jacquard machine was modified for weaving spacer fabrics. The ground warp yarns were controlled by two groups of heald frames with various positions of heald eye, forming a double-shuttle. The longitudinal warp yarns were controlled by the Jacquard healdwine to prepare a spacer Jacquard fabric with a spacing of 5 mm. Secondly, polyurethane foam was applied as a carrier to compound with silica aerogel. The experimental results demonstrate that the strength of the composite fabrics is significantly increased, while the toughness is decreased. With the increase in silica aerogel content, the pore size of foam becomes smaller, and the degree of foam fragmentation increases, showing a trend of increasing thermal insulation performance followed by a decreasing insulation performance. Breathable films were prepared based on linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and aluminum (Al; 0, 2, 4, and 8 wt.%) using extrusion molding at a pilot scale. These films must generally be able to transmit moist vapor through pores (breathability) while maintaining a barrier to liquids; this was accomplished using properly formulated composites containing spherical CaCO3 fillers. The presence of LLDPE and CaCO3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction characterization. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed the formation of Al/LLDPE/CaCO3 composite films. The melting and crystallization behaviors of the Al/LLDPE/CaCO3 composite films were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the prepared composites exhibited high thermal stability up to 350 °C. Moreover, the results demonstrate that surface morphology and breathability were both influenced by the presence of various Al contents, and their mechanical properties improved with increasing Al concentration. In addition, the results show that the thermal insulation capacity of the films increased after the addition of Al. The composite with 8 wt.% Al showed the highest thermal insulation capacity (34.6%), indicating a new approach to transform composite films into novel advanced materials for use in the fields of wooden house wrapping, electronics, and packaging. Porous high-entropy ceramics are a new alternative material for thermal insulation. Their better stability and low thermal conductivity are due to lattice distortion and unique pore structures. In this work, rare-earth-zirconate ((La0.25Eu0.25Gd0.25Yb0.25)2(Zr0.75Ce0.25)2O7) porous high-entropy ceramics were fabricated by a tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting method. The regulation of pore structures was realized through changing different initial solid loadings. The XRD, HRTEM, and SAED results showed that the porous high-entropy ceramics had a single fluorite phase without impurity phases, exhibiting high porosity (67.1–81.5%), relatively high compressive strength (1.02–6.45 MPa) and low thermal conductivity (0.0642–0.1213 W/(m·K)) at room temperature. Porous high-entropy ceramics with 81.5% porosity demonstrated excellent thermal properties, showing a thermal conductivity of 0.0642 W/(m·K) at room temperature and 0.1467 W/(m·K) at 1200 °C. The unique pore structure with a micron size contributed to their excellent thermal insulating performance. This paper presents new thermo-reflective coatings with different properties. Basic, anti-corrosion and self-extinguishing coatings were analyzed. The coatings were obtained with a thickness varying from 1 to 3 mm. The coatings were subjected to detailed tests assessing their physical-mechanical properties, i.e., tensile strength, abrasion, pull-off test, water absorption, vapor permeability and thermal properties, i.e., the thermal performance of the reflective coatings, thermal transmittance, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, as well as thermomechanical analysis and thermal conductivity. In addition, the possibility of using such coatings in a wide range of temperatures and during application to various materials used as a substrate, i.e., concrete, metal and rigid polyurethane foam, was tested. The thermal analysis of coatings revealed that materials are stable to temperatures above 200 °C, there are no thermal transitions in the negative temperature region and shrinking in low temperatures is minimal (less than 0.5%). From the data obtained within the framework of this study, it can be concluded that anticorrosive, basic and self-extinguishing coatings are eligible for thermo-insulation applications in temperatures up to 200 °C. With the increasing demand for high temperature-resistant heat insulation materials for hypersonic vehicles, carbon foam has been studied extensively, and its mechanical and thermal properties have been fully researched, but the oxidation behavior of carbon foams during service and the change in their properties after oxidation are rarely studied. This paper studied the relationship between both mechanical and thermal properties and oxidation degree of two kinds of foams, coal-based carbon foam and antioxidant coal-based carbon foam with chemical vapor deposition of SiC particles. The variation trend for the two kinds of foam was the same. When the oxidation degree was less than 15%, the compression modulus and strength weakened with the increase in weight loss rate, but the thermal conductivity decreased with the increase in weight loss rate, which was a favorable influence for the thermal protection system. The mechanical and thermal properties had a linear relationship with the weight loss rate, but the slope was different between 0% to 10% and 10% to 15%. Down fiber is one of the most superior materials, with excellent thermal properties, that can be used in bedding, clothing, and so on. Down products are usually encapsulated in fabrics that are more compact and, therefore, impart an anti-drilling performance. In this study, down fibers were encapsulated in polypropylene melt-blown nonwoven fabric, and also in polyester woven cloth, to form two different kinds of composite waddings. The waddings made of down fiber encapsulated in melt-blown nonwoven fabrics have a superior moisture permeability, thermal insulation, and anti-drilling performance, and a slightly inferior air permeability compared to that of waddings made with traditional woven fabrics. The pore fractal dimensions of melt-blown nonwoven fabrics are larger than that of woven fabrics. The relationship between the fractal dimension and performance of waddings explains the difference. Foamed mortar with a density of 1300 kg/m3 was prepared. In the initial laboratory trials, water-to-cement (w/c) ratios ranging from 0.54 to 0.64 were tested to determine the optimal value for foamed mortar corresponding to the highest compressive strength without compromising its fresh state properties. With the obtained optimal w/c ratio of 0.56, two types of foamed mortar were prepared, namely cement-foamed mortar (CFM) and slag-foamed mortar (SFM, 50% cement was replaced by slag weight). Four different curing conditions were adopted for both types of foamed mortar to assess their compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and thermal insulation performance. The test results indicated that utilizing 50% of slag as cement replacement in the production of foamed mortar improved the compressive strength, UPV and thermal insulation properties. Additionally, the initial water curing of seven days gained higher compressive strength and increased UPV values as compared to the air cured and natural weather curing samples. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most widely used silicon-based polymer due to its versatility and its various attractive properties. The fabrication of PDMS involves liquid phase cross-linking to obtain hydrophobic and mechanically flexible material in the final solid form. This allows to add various fillers to affect the properties of the resulting material. PDMS has a relatively low Thermal Conductivity (TC), in the order of 0.2 W/mK, which makes it attractive for thermal insulation applications such as sealing in construction. Although a further decrease in the TC of PDMS can be highly beneficial for such applications, most research on the thermal properties of PDMS composites have focused on fillers that increase the TC rather than decrease it. In the present work, we propose a simple and reliable method for making a PDMS-based composite material with significantly improved thermal insulation properties, by adding hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) to the mixture of the liquid base and the cross-linker (10:1 ratio), followed by degassing and heat-assisted crosslinking. We obtained a 31% reduction of thermal conductivity and a 60% increase in the elastic modulus of samples with HGM content of 17% by weight. At the same time, the sound insulation capacity of the PDMS-HGM composite is slightly decreased in comparison to pure PDMS, as a result of its lower density. This paper focuses on the search for novel insulating structures, and the generation of them by means of a state-of-the-art manufacturing method—3D printing. Bionic structures, which are successfully used in many branches of technology, were chosen as the source of inspiration for the research. The paper presents a design of spatial structures with a gyroid infill (e.g., TPMS), the shape of which reflects the bionic structure of the inside of a bone. For SLS printed single- and multi-layered structures, the design value of the thermal conductivity coefficient was determined through measurements and calculations. A statistical analysis was carried out to determine the effect of the direction of heat flow, as well as the internal structure and layering of the prototype materials, on the values of the thermal conductivity coefficient and the thermal resistance coefficient. On the basis of the multicriteria analysis, the composite's optimal composition according to the adopted optimization criteria was determined. The lowest possible thermal conductivity of the insulation was equal to 0.033 W/(m·K). The highest possible thermal resistance was equal to 0.606 m2·K/W. There is currently a growing demand for more effective thermal insulation materials with the best performance properties. This research paper presents the investigation results on the influence of two types of filler on the structure and properties of rigid polyurethane foam composites. Fly ash as a product of coal combustion in power plants and microspheres of 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%, were used as rigid polyurethane foams modifiers. The results of thermal analysis, mechanical properties testing, and cellular structure investigation performed for polyurethane composites show that the addition of fly ash, up to 10 wt.%, significantly improved the majority of the tested parameters. In this work, the suitability of natural raw materials with various modifications of SiO2—granite sawing waste (quartz) and opoka (a mixture of cristobalite, tridymite, quartz, and an amorphous part)—for the 1.13 nm tobermorite and xonotlite synthesis is examined, and their specific surface area, pore diameter and volume, and the predominant pores are determined. Hydrothermal syntheses were carried out at 200 °C for 12 and 72 h from mixtures with a molar ratio of CaO/SiO2 = 1.0. X-ray diffraction analysis, simultaneous thermal analysis, and scanning electronic microscopy were used, which showed that in the lime–calcined opoka mixture the formation of crystalline calcium silicate hydrates takes place much faster than in the lime–granite sawing waste mixture. The high reactivity of amorphous SiO2 results in the rapid formation of 1.13 nm tobermorite and xonotlite (12 h). According to Brunauer, Emmet and Taller (BET) analysis data, this product features a specific surface area of ~68 m2/g, a total pore volume of 245 × 10−3 cm3/g, and has dominating 1–2.5 nm and 5–20 nm diameter pores. Processing highly flammable products, the oil and gas (O&G) industry can experience major explosions and fires, which may expose pressurized equipment to high thermal loads. In 2020, oil fires occurred at two Norwegian O&G processing plants. To reduce the escalation risk, passive fire protection may serve as a consequence-reducing barrier. For heat or cold conservation, equipment and piping often require thermal insulation, which may offer some fire protection. In the present study, a representative thermal insulation (certified up to 700 °C) was examined with respect to dimensional changes and thermal transport properties after heat treatment to temperatures in the range of 700 °C to 1200 °C. Post heat treatment, the thermal conductivity of each test specimen was recorded at ambient temperature and up to 700 °C, which was the upper limit for the applied measurement method. Based on thermal transport theory for porous and/or amorphous materials, the thermal conductivity at the heat treatment temperature above 700 °C was estimated by extrapolation. The dimensional changes due to, e.g., sintering, were also analyzed. Empirical equations describing the thermal conductivity, the dimensional changes and possible crack formation were developed. It should be noted that the thermal insulation degradation, especially at temperatures approaching 1200 °C, is massive. Thus, future numerical modeling may be difficult above 1150 °C, due to abrupt changes in properties as well as crack development and crack tortuosity. However, if the thermal insulation is protected by a thin layer of more robust material, e.g., passive fire protection to keep the thermal insulation at temperatures below 1100 °C, future modeling seems promising. This paper investigated the influence of recycled ceramics and grazed hollow beads on the mechanical, thermal conductivity and material properties of concrete. The results showed that the concentration of recycled ceramics and grazed hollow beads has significant optimization on the workability and thermal properties of the concrete. However, the superabundant concentration can reduce the hydration degree of the concrete, which results in the suppressed production of C-S-H gel and the increase of material defects. In summary, considering the coordinated development of key factors such as thermal insulation properties, mechanical properties and microstructure, 10% RCE and 60% GHB are the optimal material system design methods. Polyurethane foam (PUF) has generally been used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier cargo containment systems (CCSs) owing to its excellent mechanical and thermal properties over a wide range of temperatures. An LNG CCS must be designed to withstand extreme environmental conditions. However, as the insulation material for LNGC CCSs, PUF has two major limitations: its strength and thermal conductivity. In the present study, PUFs were synthesized with various weight percentages of porous silica aerogel to reinforce the characteristics of PUF used in LNG carrier insulation systems. To evaluate the mechanical strength of the PUF-silica aerogel composites considering LNG loading/unloading environmental conditions, compressive tests were conducted at room temperature (20 °C) and a cryogenic temperature (−163 °C). In addition, the thermal insulation performance and cellular structure were identified to analyze the effects of silica aerogels on cell morphology. The cell morphology of PUF-silica aerogel composites was relatively homogeneous, and the cell shape remained closed at 1 wt.% in comparison to the other concentrations. As a result, the mechanical and thermal properties were significantly improved by the addition of 1 wt.% silica aerogel to the PUF. The mechanical properties were reduced by increasing the silica aerogel content to 3 wt.% and 5 wt.%, mainly because of the pores generated on the surface of the composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is a thermal insulation material extensively applied in building systems. It has attracted much attention because of outstanding thermal insulation performance, obvious flammability shortcoming and potential energy utilization. To establish the reaction mechanism of XPS's pyrolysis, thermogravimetric experiments were performed at different heating rates in nitrogen, and multiple methods were employed to analyze the major kinetics of pyrolysis. More accurate kinetic parameters of XPS were estimated by four common model-free methods. Then, three model-fitting methods (including the Coats-Redfern, the iterative procedure and masterplots method) were used to establish the kinetic model. Since the kinetic models established by the above three model-fitting methods were not completely consistent based on different approximations, considering the effect of different approximates on the model, the reaction mechanism was further established by comparing the conversion rate based on the model-fitting methods corresponding to the possible reaction mechanisms. Finally, the accuracy of the above model-fitting methods and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm were compared. Results showed that the reaction function g(α) = (1 − α)−1 − 1 might be the most suitable to characterize the pyrolysis of XPS. This research investigates the preparation and characterization of new organic–inorganic geopolymeric foams obtained by simultaneously reacting coal fly ash and an alkali silicate solution with polysiloxane oligomers. Foaming was realized in situ using Si0 as a blowing agent. Samples with density ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 g/cm3 that show good mechanical properties (with compressive strength up to ≈5 MPa for a density of 0.7 g/cm3) along with thermal performances (λ = 0.145 ± 0.001 W/m·K for the foamed sample with density 0.330 g/cm3) comparable to commercial lightweight materials used in the field of thermal insulation were prepared. Since these foams were obtained by valorizing waste byproducts, they could be considered as low environmental impact materials and, hence, with promising perspectives towards the circular economy. This paper performed a detailed study on the fundamental properties and thermal conductivity of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) self-insulation block, and the mechanical properties and heat transfer resistance of the AAC self-insulation block masonry. Different kinds of joints and the plastering surface were used to build the masonry specimens. The distinctive feature of the blocks and mortars is the lower thermal conductivity with expected strength. Compared to those with larger thickness of insulation mortar joints, the masonry with thin-layer mortar joints had better compressive performance and lower shear strength. The compressive strength of masonry was related with the block and mortar strengths, the shear strength of masonry along mortar joints was related with the mortar strength. The stress–strain relationship of masonry in compression could be predicted by the similar expression of conventional block masonry. The tested heat transfer coefficient of AAC self-insulation block masonry with thickness of 250 mm without plastering surfaces was (0.558 ± 0.003) W/(m2·K). With the plastering surfaces, the heat transfer coefficient reduced by 4.4% to 8.9%. Good agreements in values of heat transfer coefficient existed by using the test, theoretical computation and ANSYS (ANSYS Inc. Canonsburg, PA, USA) analytical methods. Based on the extensibility analyses, the heat transfer coefficients of AAC self-insultation block masonry with different thickness are proposed. The thermal and structural performance of geopolymer-coated polyurethane foam–phase change material capsules/geopolymer concrete composites was investigated. Three groups of concrete composites were prepared. The first was pure geopolymer (GP, control sample), the second was a GP/polyurethane foam (F) concrete composite, and the third was GP-coated polyurethane foam-phase change material capsules (GP-F-PCM)/GP concrete composites. Three different percentages of foam and GP-F-PCM capsules (25%, 50%, and 75%) were used in the composites. Thermal and U-value tests were conducted for all composites to characterize their peak temperature damping and insulation performances. The addition of 75% foam has been noticed to increase the back-surface temperature by 5.9 °C compared to the control sample. This may be attributed to the degradation of foam into low molecular constituents in the presence of a strong alkali. However, a temperature drop of 12.5 °C was achieved by incorporating 75% of GP-F-PCM capsules. The addition of 50% foam as a sandwich layer between two halves of a geopolymer concrete cube is also investigated. It was found that inserting a foam layer reduced the back-surface temperature by 3.3 °C, which is still less than the reduction in the case of GP-F-PCM capsules. The compressive strength was tested to check the integrity of the prepared concrete. At 28 days of aging, the compressive strength dropped from 65.2 MPa to 9.9 MPa with the addition of 75% GP-F-PCM capsules, which is still acceptable for certain building elements (e.g., nonloadbearing exterior walls).
