This study evaluates the potential use of discarded plasterboard paper as fibers from buildings to reinforce concrete. Various concentrations of wastepaper fibers (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% by weight of the binder) were investigated in this research. To mitigate the water absorption effect of the paper fibers, metakaolin was employed as a partial cement replacement. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of the wastepaper fiber enhances the mechanical and durability performance of the concrete. The optimal fiber proportion was identified as 1%, leading to a 29% increase in the compressive strength, a 38% increase in the splitting tensile strength, a 12% decrease in the water absorption, and a 23% decrease in the drying shrinkage with respect to the concrete containing 20% metakaolin. However, exceeding this optimal fiber content results in decreased mechanical and durability properties due to the fiber agglomeration and non-uniform fiber distribution within the concrete matrix. Based on the microstructural analysis, the improved performance of the concrete is ascribed to decreased porosity, more refined pore structure, and reduced propagation of microcracks within the concrete matrix in the presence of wastepaper fiber. According to the results, concrete containing 20% metakaolin and 1% wastepaper fiber exhibits durability and mechanical properties comparable to those of the traditional concrete. This finding highlights the significant promise of reducing dependency on conventional cement and incorporating suitable recycled materials, such as discarded plasterboard, and secondary by-products like metakaolin. In the present work, tracing and Whatman papers were used as substrates to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures. Cellulose-based substrates are cost-efficient, highly sensitive and environmentally friendly. ZnO nanostructures with hexagonal structure were synthesized by hydrothermal under microwave irradiation using an ultrafast approach, that is, a fixed synthesis time of 10 min. The effect of synthesis temperature on ZnO nanostructures was investigated from 70 to 130 °C. An Ultra Violet (UV)/Ozone treatment directly to the ZnO seed layer prior to microwave assisted synthesis revealed expressive differences regarding formation of the ZnO nanostructures. Structural characterization of the microwave synthesized materials was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The optical characterization has also been performed. The time resolved photocurrent of the devices in response to the UV turn on/off was investigated and it has been observed that the ZnO nanorod arrays grown on Whatman paper substrate present a responsivity 3 times superior than the ones grown on tracing paper. By using ZnO nanorods, the surface area-to-volume ratio will increase and will improve the sensor sensibility, making these types of materials good candidates for low cost and disposable UV sensors. This paper mainly explores the feasibility of using desert sand (DS) and recycled aggregate in cement-stabilized bases. Recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and DS serve as the substitutes of natural coarse and fine aggregates, respectively, in cement-stabilized bases. A four-factor and four-level orthogonal test is designed to analyze the unconfined compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and compressive resilient modulus. Furthermore, this paper investigates the effects of cement content, fly ash (FA) replacement rate, RCA replacement rate, and DS replacement rate on the road performance of cement-stabilized bases composed of RCA and DS. The test results reveal that the performance of cement-stabilized bases with partial RCA instead of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) and partial DS instead of natural fine aggregate satisfies the road use. The correlation and microscopic analyses of the test results imply the feasibility of applying DS and recycled aggregate to cement-stabilized bases. This paper calculates and evaluates the life cycle of carbon emissions of desert sand and recycled coarse aggregate cement-stabilized macadam (DRCSM) and finds that both DS and RCA can reduce the carbon emissions of CSM, which has a positive effect on improving the environment and solving the climate crisis. Before artificial ageing, extruded aluminium profiles are subjected to stretching with a small cold deformation in the range of 0.5–2%. This deformation improves the geometrical stability of the extruded product and causes changes in the microstructure of the profile, which leads to the strain hardening of the material after artificial ageing. The work has resulted in the creation of the prototype of an original device, which is unique in the world, for the dynamic stretching of the extruded profiles after quenching. The semi-industrial unit is equipped with a hydraulic system for stretching and a pneumatic system for cold dynamic deformation. The aim of this research paper is to produce advantageous microstructural changes and increase the strength properties of the extruded material. The solution of the dynamic stretching of the profiles after extrusion is a great challenge and an innovation not yet practised. The paper presents the results of microstructural and mechanical investigations carried out on extruded AlMgSi(Cu) alloys quenched on the run-out table of the press, dynamically stretched under different conditions, and artificially aged for T5 temper. Different stretching conditions were applied: a static deformation of 0.5% at a speed of 0.02 m/s, and dynamic deformation of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% at speeds of 0.05 and 2 m/s. After the thermomechanical treatment of the profiles, microstructural observations were carried out using an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A tensile test was also carried out on the specimens stretched under different conditions. In all the cases, the dynamically stretched profiles showed higher strength properties, especially those deformed at a higher speed of 2 m/s, where the increase in UTS was observed in the range of 7–18% compared to the classical (static) stretching. This paper presents the influence of adding rinsed ilmenite mud waste (R-MUD) on the microstructure of Portland cement composites, compared to similar composites containing fly ash (FA). The aim of the study is the assessment of the pozzolanic activity of ilmenite mud waste by its impact on the microstructure of the cement matrix in comparison to the undoubted pozzolanic activity of fly ash. The presented test results include pore size distribution, phase composition, pozzolanic activity using thermal analysis, R3 bound water test, and microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tests were performed on mortars cured for up to 360 days. The results presented in this paper have shown that R-MUD has a pozzolanic activity level similar to FA or better, which influences pore size distribution in the composite and its microstructure. During the curing process, the microstructure of composites containing R-MUD became more compact and sealed than those with FA, which might also increase their durability. The results of the R3 tests have proven the pozzolanic activity of R-MUD but its level was lower than FA. The cellular automata (CA) method has played an important role in the research and development of metallic materials. CA can interpret the microstructure changes of materials and obtain more abundant, accurate and intuitive information of microstructure evolution than conventional methods. CA can visually represent the process of grain formation, growth, development and change to us in a graphical way, which can assist us in analysis, thinking and solving problems. In the last five years, the application of CA in materials research has been rapidly developed, and CA has begun to occupy an increasingly important position in the simulation research of metallic materials. After introducing the advantages and limitations of CA compared to other widely used simulation methods, the purpose of this paper is to review the recent application progress on the microstructure simulation of metallic materials using CA, such as solidification, recrystallization, phase transformation and carbide precipitation occurring during forming and heat treatment. Specifically, recent research advances on microstructure simulation by CA in the fields of additive manufacturing, welding, asymmetrical rolling, corrosion prevention, etc., are also elaborated in this paper. Furthermore, this paper points out the future work direction of CA simulation in the research of metallic materials, especially in the simulation of the crystal structure, the prediction of mechanical properties, CA simulation software and rule systems, etc. These are expected to attract wide attention of researchers in the field of metallic materials and promote the development of CA in materials research. This paper presents the experimental results of a study evaluating the mechanical and fatigue performance of welded Fe-Mn-Si SMA. For the experimental study, welded and welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMA specimens were fabricated, and fatigue tests were performed at various stress amplitudes. In addition, direct tensile tests and recovery stress tests were also performed to evaluate the material properties of Fe-Mn-Si SMAs. The elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength of the welded specimens were reduced by 35.4%, 12.1%, and 8.6%, respectively, compared to the values of the non-welded specimens. On the other hand, the elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength of the welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMA specimens were increased by 18.6%, 4.9%, and 1.3%, respectively, compared to the values of the welded specimens. Both welded and welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMAs failed at lower cycles than the conventional Fe-Mn-Si SMAs at the same stress amplitude. High-cycle fatigue failure, characterized by cycles exceeding 104, typically occurs at relatively low stress levels within the elastic region, whereas low-cycle fatigue failure, generally occurring within cycles below 104, involves high stress levels that encompass both elastic and plastic deformation. Regardless of the welding condition, the stress amplitude at which Fe-Mn-Si SMA transitions from high-cycle to low-cycle failure exceeded the yield strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid advancement of 3D-printing technology, additive manufacturing using FDM extrusion has emerged as a prominent method in manufacturing. However, it encounters certain limitations, notably in surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Addressing issues related to stability and surface roughness necessitates the integration of 3D-printing technology with traditional machining, a strategy known as the hybrid technique. This paper presents a study of the surface geometric parameters and microstructure of plastic parts produced by FDM. Sleeve-shaped samples were 3D-printed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol material using variable layer heights of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm and then subjected to the turning process with PVD-coated DCMT11T304 turning inserts using variable cutting parameters. The cutting depth was constant at 0.82 mm. Surface roughness values were correlated with the cutting tool feed rate and the printing layer height applied. The selected specimen's microstructure was studied with a Zeiss EVO MA 15 scanning electron microscope. The roundness was measured with a Keyence VR-6200 3D optical profilometer. The research results confirmed that the additional application of turning, combined with a reduction in the feed rate (0.0506 mm/rev) and the height of the printed layer (0.1 mm), reduced the surface roughness of the sleeve (Ra = 1.94 μm) and increased its geometric accuracy. Due to its exceptional mechanical and chemical properties at high temperatures, Inconel 718 is extensively utilized in industries such as aerospace, aviation, and marine. Investigating the flow behavior of Inconel 718 under high strain rates and high temperatures is vital for comprehending the dynamic characteristics of the material in manufacturing processes. This paper introduces a physics-based constitutive model that accounts for dislocation motion and its density evolution, capable of simulating the plastic behavior of Inconel 718 during large strain deformations caused by machining processes. Utilizing a microstructure-based flow stress model, the machinability of Inconel 718 in terms of cutting forces and temperatures is quantitatively predicted and compared with results from orthogonal cutting experiments. The model's predictive precision, with a margin of error between 5 and 8%, ensures reliable consistency and enhances our comprehension of the high-speed machining dynamics of Inconel 718 components. This paper investigates the tensile properties and microstructures of Cu/Al clad sheets with an SUS304 interlayer after cryorolling and subsequent annealing and compares them with hot-rolled samples. The experimental results show that the inhibition of dynamic recovery by cryorolling enables the Cu/Al clad sheets to achieve a tensile strength of 302 MPa. After annealing, the tensile strength sharply drops to 159 MPa, while the elongation recovers to 29.0%. Compared with hot-rolled samples, the tensile strength of cryorolled samples is increased by 13.1% due to the effect of fine-grain strengthening. During the annealing process, the cryorolled samples exhibit improved elongation under a comparable strength with the hot-rolled samples, profiting from the higher degree of recrystallization and a higher proportion of annealing twins. The tensile properties of Cu/Al clad sheet with an SUS304 interlayer are strengthened by cryorolling and subsequent annealing, providing a new method for the fabrication of high-performance Cu/Al clad sheets. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a key extrusion-based additive manufacturing (AM) process for fabricating components from polymers and their composites. Functionally gradient materials (FGMs) exhibit spatially varying properties by modulating chemical compositions, microstructures, and design attributes, offering enhanced performance over homogeneous materials and conventional composites. These materials are pivotal in aerospace, automotive, and medical applications, where the optimization of weight, cost, and functional properties is critical. Conventional FGM manufacturing techniques are hindered by complexity, high costs, and limited precision. AM, particularly FFF, presents a promising alternative for FGM production, though its application is predominantly confined to research settings. This paper conducts an in-depth review of current FFF techniques for FGMs, evaluates the limitations of traditional methods, and discusses the challenges, opportunities, and future research trajectories in this emerging field. To overcome the problem of Cr2O3 and Al2O3 inclusions in CuCr50 alloy prepared by aluminothermic reduction method, in this paper, a novel methodology for strengthening metal–slag separation through in situ slagging is proposed. CuCr50 alloys were prepared by metallothermic reduction using Al and Al-Mg as reducing agents, and the physical properties of the slag, such as viscosity, density, and surface tension, were adjusted by controlling the proportion of CaO in the slagging agent in the raw material to achieve good separation of the slag–metal. The results show that with the ratio of CaO increased, CaO and MgO were coupled to make slag, which combined with Cr2O3 and Al2O3 to form CaCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and CaAl4O7 in the slag, thus reducing the content of impurities in the alloy. When RCaO/(CaO + Al2O3 + MgO) = 20%, the Cr content ranged from 46.61% to 47.09%, the inclusions accounted for 1.60%, the Cr particle size was refined to 20 µm, the number of Cr spherical crystals accounted for 9.88%, the conductivity reached 14.96 MS/m, and the hardness reached 100.23 HB. After heat treatment, the Cr phase was refined in the alloy, the conductivity increased from 14.96 MS/m to 18.27 MS/m, and the hardness increased from 100.23 HB to 103.1 HB. The growing use of aluminum and its compounds has increased the volume of aluminum waste. To mitigate environmental impacts and cut down on manufacturing expenses, extensive investigations have recently been undertaken to recycle aluminum compounds. This paper outlines the outcomes of a study on fabricating standard EN AW-2007 alloy using industrial and secondary scrap through continuous casting. The resultant recycled bars were analyzed for their chemical makeup and examined for microstructural features in both the cast and T4 states, undergoing mechanical property evaluations. The study identified several phases in the cast form through LM, SEM + EDS, and XRD techniques: Al7Cu2Fe, θ-Al2Cu, β-Mg2Si, Q-Al4Cu2Mg8Si7, and α-Al15(FeMn)3 (SiCu)2, along with Pb particles. Most primary intermetallic precipitates such as θ-Al2Cu, β-Mg2Si, and Q-Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 dissolved into the α-Al solid solution during the solution heat treatment. In the subsequent natural aging process, the θ-Al2Cu phase predominantly emerged as a finely dispersed hardening phase. The peak hardness achieved in the EN AW-2007 alloy was 124.8 HB, following a solution heat treatment at 500 °C and aging at 25 °C for 80 h. The static tensile test assessed the mechanical and ductility properties of the EN AW-2007 alloy in both the cast and T4 heat-treated states. Superior strength parameters were achieved after solution heat treatment at 500 °C for 6 h, followed by water quenching and natural aging at 25 °C/9 h, with a tensile strength of 435.0 MPa, a yield strength of 240.5 MPa, and an appreciable elongation of 18.1% at break. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of producing defect-free EN AW-2007 alloy ingots with excellent mechanical properties from recycled scrap using the continuous casting technique. In this paper, the effect of waste rock-wool dosage on the workability, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, toughness and hydration products of PVA and steel fiber-reinforced mortars was investigated. The results showed that the fluidity of the mortar gradually decreased with the increase in the dosage of waste rock wool, with a maximum reduction of 10% at a dosage of 20%. The higher the dosage of waste rock wool, the greater the reduction in compressive strength. The effect of waste rock wool on strength reduction decreases with increasing age. When the dosage of waste rock wool was 10%, the 28 days of flexural and compressive strengths were reduced by 4.73% and 10.59%, respectively. As the dosage of waste rock wool increased, the flexural-to-compressive ratio increased, and at 20%, the maximum value of 28 days of flexural-to-compressive ratio was 0.210, which was increased by 28.05%. At a 5% dosage, the abraded volume was reduced from 500 mm3 to 376 mm3—a reduction of 24.8%. Waste rock wool only affects the hydration process and does not cause a change in the type of hydration products. Metal products for the metallurgical and machinery industries must meet high requirements in terms of their performance, including reliability, accuracy, durability and fatigue strength. It is also important that materials commonly used to manufacture such products must meet specific requirements. Therefore, various techniques and technologies for modifying the surface layer are becoming more and more widely used. These include burnishing, which may be dynamic or static. This article studies the process of slide burnishing of surfaces of cylindrical objects. The burnishing was performed using a slide burnisher with a rigid diamond-tipped clamp on a general-purpose lathe. The tests were performed for corrosion-resistant steel X2CrNiMo17-12-2. The aim of the research was to determine the impact of changes in burnishing conditions and parameters—feed rate, burnisher depth and burnishing force at a constant burnishing speed—on the surface roughness and hardness. Additionally, the microstructure was assessed in the critical areas: the surface and the core. Another phenomenon observed was surface cracking, which would be destructive due to the occurrence of indentation. In the paper, it was stated that the microstructure, or rather the grains, in the area of the surface layer was oriented in the direction of deformation. It was also observed that in the area of the surface layer, no cracks or other flaws were revealed. Incineration is currently the standard way of disposing of municipal waste. It uses components protected by high-temperature-resistant layers of materials, such as Inconel alloys. Therefore, the objective of the current paper is to study the mechanical properties and structure of a bimetallic Inconel 625-16Mo3 steel tube. The Inconel 625 layer was 3.5 mm thick and was applied to the surface of the tube with a wall thickness of 7 mm via the cold metal transfer method. The bimetallic tube was bent using a supercritical bend (d ≤ 0.7D). This paper is focused on the investigation of the material changes in the Inconel 625 layer areas influenced by the maximum tensile and compressive stresses after the bend. The change in layer thickness after the bend was evaluated and compared to the non-deformed tube. In addition, the local mechanical properties (nanohardness, Young modulus) across the indicated interfacial areas using quasistatic nanoindentation were investigated. Subsequently, a thorough microstructure observation was carried out in areas with maximum tensile and compressive stresses to determine changes in the morphology and size of dendrites related to the effect of tensile or compressive stresses induced by bending. It was found that the grain featured a stretched secondary dendrite axis in the area of tensile stress, but compressive stress imparted a prolongation of the primary dendrite axis. MCrAlY (M = Ni and/or Co) metallic coatings are essential for the protection of hot-end components against thermal and corrosion damage. Increasing the Al content is considered a feasible solution to improve the high-temperature performance of MCrAlY coatings. In this paper, the effects of high Al contents (12–20 wt.%) on the phase constituents and cast microstructures in MCrAlY alloys were studied by high-energy X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques combined with phase equilibria calculations. High Al content improved the stability of β, σ, and α phases. Meanwhile, an evolution of the cast microstructure morphology from a dendrite structure to an equiaxed grain structure was observed. The thermal properties were analyzed, which were closely related to the phase constituents and solid-to-solid phase transitions at evaluated temperatures. The application of advanced high-strength steel grades (AHSS) in different kinds of industry is connected to more than their attractive mechanical properties. The present paper focuses on improving the welding Docol 1300M steel to reach an acceptable microstructure and mechanical parameters. It was decided to manufacture joints with different welding parameters using different filler materials. The electrode wires were varied to increase the carbon content in the weld, and nitrogen was added to the argon shielding mixture to obtain non-metallic inclusions that strengthen the fusion zone. Specimens of joints welded with the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process for non-destructive and destructive tests were examined. Tensile and bending tests as well as microscopic inspections using a light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also conducted. The results from the fatigue test confirmed the validity of the proposed welding process for the Docol 1300M joint. The collected data enabled the following conclusion: The article's novelty is represented by the use of shielding gas mixtures containing argon and nitrogen in the GMAW welding process of AHSS steel to create titanium non-metallic inclusions, which will translate into better performance properties of the entire joint. In industrial production, the deformation inhomogeneity after metal forging affects the mechanical properties of various parts of the forgings. The question of whether the organization and mechanical properties of β-titanium alloy can be improved by controlling the amount of forging deformation needs to be answered. Therefore, in this paper, a new sub-stable β-Ti alloy TB 18 (Ti-5.3Cr-4.9Mo4.9V-4.3Al-0.9Nb-0.3Fe) was subjected to three different levels of deformation, as well as solid solution-aging treatments, and the variation rules of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. During the solid solution process, the texture evolution pattern of the TB18 alloy at low deformation (20–40%) is mainly rotational cubic texture deviated into α-fiber texture; at high deformation (60%), the main components of the deformed texture are α-fiber texture with a specific orientation of (114)<1 13 - 3>. After subsequent static recrystallization, the α-fiber texture is deviated to an α*-fiber texture, while the specific orientation (114)<1 13 - 3> can still be inherited as a major component of the recrystallized texture. The plasticity of the alloy in the normal direction (ND) after the solid solution is influenced by the existence of the <110>//ND texture, and the plasticity of the alloy in the ND direction after aging is determined by a combination of the volume fraction of the <110>//ND texture in the matrix phase and the volume fraction of [11 2 - 0]α//ND in the α phase. The results show that it is feasible to change the characteristics of the recrystallization texture of TB18 by controlling the deformation level of hot forging, thus realizing the modulation of the mechanical properties. In this paper, we study the influence of densified microsilica and colloidal nanosilica admixtures on the mechanical strength and the microstructural characteristics of special mortars used for immobilizing radioactive concrete waste. The experimental program focused on the replacement of cement with micro- and/or nanosilica, in different proportions, in the basic composition of a mortar made with recycled aggregates. The technical criteria imposed for such cementitious systems, used for the encapsulation of low-level radioactive waste, imply high fluidity, increased mechanical strength and lack of segregation and of bleeding. We aimed to increase the structural compactness of the mortars by adding micro- and nanosilica, all the while maintaining the technical criteria imposed, to obtain a cement matrix with high durability and increased capacity for immobilizing radionuclides. The samples from all the compositions obtained were analyzed from the point of view of mechanical strength. Also, micro- and nanosilica as well as samples of the optimal mortar compositions were analyzed physically and microstructurally. Experimental data showed that the mortar samples present maximum compressive strength for a content between 6 and 7.5% wt. of microsilica, respectively, for a content of 2.25% wt. nanosilica. The obtained results suggest a synergistic effect of micro- and nanosilica when they are used simultaneously in cementitious compositions. Thus, among the analyzed compositional variants, the mortar composition with 3% wt. microsilica and 2.25% wt. nanosilica showed the best performance, with an increase in compressive strength of 23.5% compared to the control sample (without micro- and nanosilica). Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images highlighted the decrease in pore diameter and the increase in structural compactness, especially for mortar samples with nanosilica content or a mixture of micro- and nanosilica. In this paper, the possibility of retreated lithium slag (RTLS) with a high content of alkali, sulfate and fluoride as a partial replacement for fly ash (FA) to produce autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) was investigated. The influence of the RTLS dosage on the AAC performance were examined. The composition and microstructure of hydrates as well as the microstructure of the RTLS-FA-based AAC compositions were determined by XRD, FTIR, TG-DSC and SEM. The results illustrated that the incorporation of RTLS changed the crystal structure and the microstructure of the tobermorite. With increased RTLS contents, the morphology of tobermorite was changed, and the grass-like tobermorite gradually transformed into network-like tobermorite. Due to its lightweight, high strength, good machinability, and low cost, aluminum alloy has been widely used in fields such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and construction. Traditional manufacturing processes for aluminum alloys often suffer from low material utilization, complex procedures, and long manufacturing cycles. Therefore, more and more scholars are turning their attention to the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process for aluminum alloys, which has the advantages of high material utilization, good formability for complex structures, and short manufacturing cycles. However, the widespread promotion and application of LPBF aluminum alloys still face challenges. The excellent printable ability, favorable mechanical performance, and low manufacturing cost are the main factors affecting the applicability of the LPBF process for aluminum alloys. This paper reviews the research status of traditional aluminum alloy processing and LPBF aluminum alloy and makes a comparison from various aspects such as microstructures, mechanical properties, application scenarios, and manufacturing costs. At present, the LPBF manufacturing cost for aluminum alloys is 2–120 times higher than that of traditional manufacturing methods, with the discrepancy depending on the complexity of the part. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the further development and application of aluminum alloy 3D printing technology from three aspects: the development of aluminum matrix composite materials reinforced with nanoceramic particles, the development of micro-alloyed aluminum alloy powders specially designed for LPBF, and the development of new technologies and equipment to reduce the manufacturing cost of LPBF aluminum alloy. In recent years, asphalt pavement has been subjected to varied environmental conditions during its service life, conditions that predispose it to deformation and cracking. To enhance the performance of asphalt pavement, rock asphalt has been selected as a modifier due to its good compatibility with virgin asphalt binder and its ability to improve the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Although scholars have conducted some studies on rock asphalt mixtures, research on the fatigue and self-healing performance of these mixtures under conditions such as ultraviolet (UV) aging and freeze–thaw remains limited. This paper presents findings from a study that employs a combined fatigue-healing test to assess the impact of such complex environmental factors on the fatigue and self-healing properties of fine aggregate matrix (FAM) mixtures containing three types of rock asphalts, i.e., Buton, Qingchuan (QC), and Uintaite Modifier (UM). The analysis of fatigue-healing test results, grounded in viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) theory, indicates that rock asphalt can extend the fatigue life of FAM mixtures, albeit with a concomitant decrease in their self-healing capabilities. The study further reveals that UV aging, freeze–thaw, and UV aging–freeze–thaw conditions all led to a diminution in the fatigue and self-healing properties of FAM mixtures. However, FAM mixtures containing rock asphalt demonstrated greater resilience against these reductions. Atomic force microscope (AFM) results indicate that UV aging reduced the number of bee-structures and enlarged their area, whereas the incorporation of rock asphalt enhanced the uniformity of these structures' distribution, thereby improving the fatigue cracking resistance of FAM mixtures. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis reveals that while UV aging increased the carbonyl and sulfoxide indices within the asphalt binder, rock asphalt is effective in mitigating this effect to a certain degree, thereby enhancing the aging resistance of FAM mixtures. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of calcium nitrite (CN) on improving the mechanical properties and microstructures of early-frozen cement paste. Cement pastes containing 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3% CN were prepared. One batch of samples was frozen at −6 °C for 7 days and then cured at 20 °C, and the other batch of samples was directly cured at 20 °C as a control. The compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistivity of all specimens at different target ages were measured under these two curing conditions. The hydration products and microstructures of typical samples were observed using XRD and scanning SEM. The results showed that the addition of 1.5% CN could promote cement hydration and enhance slurry densification, thereby increasing the compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and electrical resistivity of the slurry, and positively affecting the early freezing resistance of the slurry. However, when the CN dosage exceeded 1.5%, the internal structure of the slurry was loose and porous due to the generation of a large amount of nitrite–AFm, which negatively affects the properties of the cement paste. In addition, the effectiveness of CN is only limited to temperature environments above −6 °C. Concrete antifreeze suitable for lower temperatures still requires further research. In the finite element analysis of asphalt concrete (AC), it is nowadays common to incorporate the information from the underlying scales to study the overall response of this material. Heterogeneity observed at the asphalt mixture scale is analyzed in this paper. Reliable finite element analysis (FEA) of asphalt concrete comprises a set of complex issues. The two main aspects of the asphalt concrete FEA discussed in this study are: (1) digital reconstruction of the asphalt pavement microstructure using processing of the high-quality images; and (2) FEA of the asphalt concrete idealized samples accounting for the viscoelastic material model. Reconstruction of the asphalt concrete microstructure is performed using a sequence of image processing operations (binarization, removing holes, filtering, segmentation and boundaries detection). Geometry of the inclusions (aggregate) are additionally simplified in a controlled mode to reduce the numerical cost of the analysis. As is demonstrated in the study, the introduced geometry simplifications are justified. Computational cost reduction exceeds of several orders of magnitude additional modeling error occurring due to the applied simplification technique. Viscoelastic finite element analysis of the AC identified microstructure is performed using the Burgers material model. The analysis algorithm is briefly described with a particular focus on the computational efficiency aspects. In order to illustrate the proposed approach, a set of 2D problems is solved. Numerical results confirm both the effectiveness of the self-developed code and the applicability of the Burgers model to the analyzed class of AC analysis problems. The paper presents the influence of the temperature of the sintering process on the microstructure and selected properties of boron carbide/TiB2/SiC composites obtained in situ by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The homogeneous mixture of boron carbide and 5% vol. Ti5Si3 micropowders were used as the initial material. Spark plasma sintering was conducted at 1700 °C, 1800 °C, and 1900 °C for 10 min after the initial pressing at 35 MPa. The heating and cooling rate was 200 °C/min. The obtained boron carbide composites were subjected to density measurement, an analysis of the chemical and phase composition, microstructure examination, and dry friction-wear tests in ball-on-disc geometry using WC as a counterpart material. The phase compositions of the produced composites differed from the composition of the initial powder mixture. Instead of titanium silicide, two new phases appeared: TiB2 and SiC. The complete disappearance of Ti5Si3 was accompanied by a decrease in the boron carbide content of the stoichiometry formula B13C2 and an increase in the content of TiB2, while the SiC content was almost constant. The relative density of the obtained boron carbide composites, as well as their hardness and resistance to wear, increased with the sintering temperature and TiB2 content. Unfortunately, the reactions occurring during sintering did not allow us to obtain composites with high density and hardness. The relative density was 76–85.2% of the theoretical one, while the Vickers hardness was in the range of 4–12 GPa. The mechanism wear of boron carbide composites tested in friction contact with WC was abrasive. The volumetric wear rate (Wv) of composites decreased with increasing sintering temperature and TiB2 content. The average value of coefficient of friction (CoF) was in the range of 0.54–0.61, i.e., it did not differ significantly from the value for B4C sinters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In electronic packaging products in the service process, the solder joints experience thermal fatigue due to temperature cycles, which have a significant influence on the performance of electronic products and the reliability of solder joints. In this paper, the thermal fatigue failure mechanism of solder joints in microelectronic packages, the microstructure changes of the thermal fatigue process, the influence factors on the joint fatigue life, and the simulation analysis and forecasting of thermal fatigue life are reviewed. The results show that the solder joints are heterogeneously coarsened, and this leads to fatigue cracks occurring under the elevated high-temperature phase of alternating temperature cycles. However, the thickness of the solder and the hold time in the high-temperature phase do not significantly influence the thermal fatigue. The coarsened region and the IMC layer thicken with the number of cycles, and the cracks initiate and propagate along the interface between the intermetallic compound (IMC) layer and coarsened region, eventually leading to solder joint failure. For lead-containing and lead-free solders, the lead-containing solder shows a faster fatigue crack growth rate and propagates by transgranular mode. Temperature and frequency affect the thermal fatigue life of solder joints to different degrees, and the fatigue lifetime of solder joints can be predicted through a variety of methods and simulated crack trajectories, but also through the use of a unified constitutive model and finite element analysis for prediction. This paper presents a study on the combined use of two by-products, namely quarry dust (QD) and ferronickel slag (FNS), as a full substitute for natural sand to improve the greenness of concrete production. Quarry dust was used in increments of 25% to a maximum of 75% substitution, where nickel slag was used as the remaining proportion of fine aggregate. All the combinations of quarry dust and nickel slag were found to be compliant with AS 2758.1 and they showed notably better grading than 100% sand. In this research, standard concrete tests, such as the slump test for fresh concrete, and compression, tensile and shrinkage tests for hardened concrete, were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were also conducted for microstructural investigation. The results concluded that the combinations of quarry dust and nickel slag in concrete as a whole substitution of sand provide similar results for these properties. Specifically, 25% quarry dust with 75% nickel slag proved to be the most promising alternative to sand, with compressive and splitting tensile strengths of 62 and 4.29 MPa, respectively, which were 16% and 20% higher than those of the control mix. Also, lower drying shrinkage was observed for this combination compared to the control mix. The higher strength is attributed to the rough texture and angular shape of both quarry dust and nickel slag providing a better mechanical interlocking. The validity of this result has also been confirmed through image analysis of micrographs from various specimens. In microstructural investigations, specimens with QD and FNS exhibited fewer voids and a more compact surface compared to the control specimen. The primary focus of the current paper centers on the microstructures and mechanical properties exhibited by a Ti-30Nb-12Zr-5Ta-2Sn-1.25Fe (wt. %) (TNZTSF) alloy that has been produced through an intricate synthesis process comprising cold-crucible induction in levitation, carried out in an atmosphere controlled by argon, and cold-rolling deformation (CR), applying systematic adjustments in the total deformation degree (total applied thickness reduction), spanning from 10% to 60%. The microstructural characteristics of the processed specimens were investigated by SEM and XRD techniques, and the mechanical properties by tensile and microhardness testing. The collected data indicate that the TNZTSF alloy's microstructure, in the as-received condition, consists of a β-Ti phase, which shows polyhedral equiaxed grains with an average grain size close to 82.5 µm. During the cold-deformation processing, the microstructure accommodates the increased applied deformation degree by increasing crystal defects such as sub-grain boundaries, dislocation cells, dislocation lines, and other crystal defects, powerfully affecting the morphological characteristics. The as-received TNZTSF alloy showed both high strength (i.e., ultimate tensile strength close to σUTS = 705.6 MPa) and high ductility (i.e., elongation to fracture close to εf = 11.1%) properties, and the computed β-Ti phase had the lattice parameter a = 3.304(7) Å and the average lattice microstrain ε = 0.101(3)%, which are drastically influenced by the applied cold deformation, increasing the strength properties and decreasing the ductility properties due to the increased crystal defects density. Applying a deformation degree close to 60% leads to an ultimate tensile strength close to σUTS = 1192.1 MPa, an elongation to fracture close to εf = 7.9%, and an elastic modulus close to 54.9 GPa, while the computed β-Ti phase lattice parameter becomes a = 3.302(1) Å. The precipitation-hardenable nickel-based superalloy Rene 41 exhibits remarkable mechanical characteristics and high corrosion resistance at high temperatures, properties that allow it to be used in high-end applications. This research paper presents findings on the influence of thermal shocks on its microstructure, hardness, and thermal diffusivity at temperatures between 700 and 1000 °C. Solar energy was used for cyclic thermal shock tests. The samples were characterized using microhardness measurements, optical microscopic analysis, scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDS elemental chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and flash thermal diffusivity measurements. In this paper, the workability, mechanical, ion leaching, and drying shrinkage properties of alkali-activated concrete with recycled coarse and fine aggregates were studied, and the pore structure and micro-morphology of different alkali-activated recycled aggregate concretes (AARACs) were characterized by using the mercury intrusion method and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The experimental results showed that with the increase in the replacement rate of the recycled fine aggregate (RFA), the flowability showed a decreasing trend. Adding a certain amount of RFA improves the mechanical properties of the AARAC. The compressive strength at a curing age of 28 days was 65.3 MPa with 70 wt% RFA replacement. When the replacement rate of the RFA was 100 wt%, the maximum splitting tensile strength (4.5 MPa) was obtained at a curing age of 7 days. However, the addition of the RFA had little effect on the flexural strength of the AARAC. As an extension of the curing age, the splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, tension-to-compression ratio, and flexure-to-compression ratio all showed an increasing trend at first and then a decreasing trend. At a curing age of 7 days, the tension-to-compression ratio and flexure-to-compression ratio were both high (except for those of R100), indicating that the ductility and toughness of the specimen were improved. The addition of the RFA increased the drying shrinkage of the AARAC. At a curing age of 120 days, compared to the specimen without the RFA, the drying shrinkage rate of the specimen with the addition of 70 wt% RFA increased by 34.15%. As the curing age increased, the microstructure of the reaction products became denser, but the proportion of large-diameter pores increased. This study evaluated the application of RFA in AARAC. Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanostructures have gained significant attention in the fields of catalysis, optoelectronics, and biomedicine due to their unique physicochemical properties. This paper introduces a simple and cost-effective method for producing Bi2S3 microstructures at low temperatures (25 and 70 °C). These microstructures are formed by the hierarchical self-assembly of Bi2S3 nanoparticles, which are typically 15–40 nm in size. The nanoparticles are synthesized by the co-precipitation of thioglycolic acid, thioacetamide, and bismuth nitrate in water. The study delves into the phase composition and morphological evolution of the microstructures, concerning the chemical composition of the solution and the synthesis temperature. X-ray analysis has confirmed the formation of single-phase bismuthinite Bi2S3. The synthesis process generates primary building blocks in the form of 15–40 nm Bi2S3 nanocrystals, which then go through a hierarchical self-assembly process to produce a range of micrometer-sized structures. A scanning electron microscopy examination revealed that the primary nanoparticles self-assemble into quasi-1D worm-like nanostructures, which then self-assemble to create sponge-shaped microstructures. These structures subsequently self-organize and refine into either flower- or dandelion-like microstructures, mostly depending on the synthesis temperature and the chemistry of the digestion medium. Retrogression and re-aging (RRA) treatment has been proven to effectively overcome the trade-off between strength and corrosion resistance. Current research focuses on the heating rate, temperature, and holding time of retrogression treatment while ignoring the retrogression cooling ways. In this paper, the effects of RRA treatment with different retrogression cooling ways on the microstructure and properties of newly developed T'/η' strengthened Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were investigated by performing tests on mechanical properties, intergranular corrosion (IGC) resistance, and electrochemical corrosion behavior. The results show that the mechanical properties of samples subject to RRA treatment with water-quenching retrogression (ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of 419.2 MPa, 370.2 MPa, and 15.9, respectively) are better than those of air-cooled and furnace-cooled samples. The corrosion resistance of water-quenching (IGC depth of 162.2 μm, corrosion current density of 0.833 × 10−5 A/cm2) and furnace-cooled samples (IGC depth of 123.7 μm, corrosion current density of 0.712 × 10−5 A/cm2) is better than that of air-cooled samples. Microstructure characterization reveals that the effect of the retrogression cooling rate on mechanical properties is related to the size of T'/η' precipitates with grains as well as the proportion of T' and η', while the difference in corrosion resistance depends on the continuity of grain boundary precipitates (GBPs). With mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and time cost taken into consideration, it is appropriate to select water quenching for retrogression. Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) ferritic steels are promising materials for the nuclear power sector. This paper presents the results of a study on the sintering process using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique, focusing on ODS ferritic steel powders with different contents (0.3 and 0.6 vol.%) of Y2O3. The novelty lies in the analysis of the effect of pre-annealing treatment on powders previously prepared by mechanical alloying on the microstructure, mechanical, and thermal properties of the sinters. Using the SPS method, it was possible to obtain well-densified sinters with a relative density above 98%. Pre-annealing the powders resulted in an increase in the relative density of the sinters and a slight increase in their thermal conductivity. The use of low electron energies during SEM analysis allowed for a fairly good visualization of the reinforcing oxides uniformly dispersed in the matrix. Analysis of the Mössbauer spectroscopy results revealed that pre-annealing induces local atomic rearrangements within the solid solution. In addition, there was an additional spectral component, indicating the formation of a Cr-based paramagnetic phase. The ODS material with a higher Y2O3 content showed increased Vickers hardness values, as well as increased Young's modulus and nanohardness, as determined by nanoindentation tests. The microstructures and mechanical properties of equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) treated with various processing parameters of laser surface heat treatment are studied in this paper. The typical inverse gradient-grained structure, which is composed of a hard central layer and a soft surface layer, can be obtained by laser surface heat treatment. A much narrower gradient layer leads to the highest yield strength by sacrificing ductility when the surface temperature of the laser-irradiated region remains at ~850 °C, whereas the fully recrystallized microstructure, which exists from the top surface layer to the ~1.05 mm depth layer, increases the ductility but decreases the yield strength as the maximum heating temperature rises to ~1050 °C. Significantly, the superior strength–ductility combination can be acquired by controlling the surface temperature of a laser-irradiated surface at ~1000 °C with a scanning speed of ~4 mm/s due to the effect of hetero-deformation-induced strengthening and hardening, as well as the enhanced interaction between dislocation and nanotwins by the hierarchical nanotwins. Therefore, retaining the partial recrystallized microstructure with a relatively high microhardness in the central layer, promoting the generation of hierarchical nanotwins, and increasing the volume proportion of gradient layer can effectively facilitate the inverse gradient-grained CoCrFeMnNi HEAs to exhibit a desirable strength–ductility synergy. Crushing waste concrete and using it directly as RAs has the disadvantages of high porosity and high water absorption. To achieve the reuse of resources, the researchers use microbial mineralization methods to further reinforce RAs. In this paper, the effect of the microbial carbonic anhydrase mineralization method on the water absorption of RAs was investigated, and the macroscopic analysis was performed by determining the indexes of water absorption and apparent density of RAs before and after the modification, and the microscopic analysis of RAs by using the methods of SEM, XRD, DSC, and EDS as well. According to the microscopic analysis, the mineralization products of microorganisms are calcium carbonate crystals, and with the increase in microbial liquid concentration, the water absorption rate of RAs shows a trend of decreasing and then increasing, and it can be found through the microscopic morphology that abundant mineralization products attached to the surface of the aggregate lead to the surface of the aggregate becoming rougher and more porous. The method of soaking the RAs in 3% bacterial solution and 0.1 mol/L calcium acetate solution followed by carbonation with 20% CO2 resulted in a 4.85% reduction in water absorption. In this paper, ordinary Portland cement, ultrafine cement, polyurethane, and epoxy resin were selected as typical grouting materials. Grouting simulation tests were first conducted to prepare the grouted concrete crack sample. The effect of concrete crack parameters (i.e., crack aperture and roughness), grout water–cement ratio, and grouting pressure on the water-plugging performance of different grouting materials was explored through the impermeability test. The microstructure of grouted concrete cracks was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and computed tomography (CT), and the difference in water-plugging performance of different grouting materials was explained at the micro level. The results show that the impermeability of the four grouting materials was ranked as follows: Epoxy resin > polyurethane > ultra-fine cement > ordinary Portland cement. The concrete cracks grouted by epoxy resin have the highest plugging failure water pressure and the lowest permeability, which is the optimal grouting material. The effectiveness of crack grouting in water-plugging was directly proportional to the grouting pressure, provided the pressure did not exceed a certain value. When the pressure surpassed the threshold, the increase in pressure did not have a significant impact on the water plugging performance. For the two cement-based materials, the threshold pressure was 1 MPa, while for the other two chemical grouts, it was 2 MPa. The two cement-based grouts with a water–cement ratio of 0.8 showed optimal water-plugging performance. The water-plugging performance of ordinary Portland cement paste, ultra-fine cement pastes, and polyurethane grout was negatively correlated with crack aperture and positively correlated with crack roughness. The common phenomenon observed for concrete in aggressive water is leaching, which involves the dissolution of cement hydration products. Many studies have focused on leaching in demineralised water or acid attacks, but mineral water still deserves further investigation. In most standards, the aggressiveness of a given water body is determined by its pH and not its composition. The effect of the calcium content of the water on degradation is yet to be determined. In this paper, the leaching of Portland cement-based mortar was induced by two types of drinking water with different calcium contents and buffer capacity in controlled conditions. The Langelier saturation index (LSI) was used to describe water aggressiveness based on the calco-carbonic equilibrium. The studied waters had the same pH but LSIs of +0.5 and −1.0 corresponding to scaling with respect to aggressive water; demineralised water was used as a reference. Microstructural damage was checked by TGA and X-ray microtomography. Macroscopic measurements were used to monitor global degradation. The soft water caused a 53% deeper deterioration of the mortar sample than the hard water. Soft water-induced leaching was found to be similar yet slower to leaching via demineralised water (with a mass loss of −2.01% and −2.16% after 200 days, respectively). In contrast, hard water induced strongly time-dependent leaching, and the damage was located close to the surface. The roughness of leached specimens was 18% higher in hard water than in soft water. The formation of calcite on the sample surface not only affects the leaching rate by creating a protective surface layer, but it could also act as a calcium ion pump. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the development of new accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials has become a research hotspot around the world. Due to its outstanding corrosion resistance, radiation resistance, and creep properties at elevated temperatures, the oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloy, as one of the most promising candidate materials for accident-tolerant fuel cladding, has been extensively studied during the past decade. Recent research on chemical composition design as well as its effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties has been reviewed in this paper. In particular, the reasonable/optimized content of Cr is explained from the aspects of oxidation resistance, radiation resistance, and thermal stability. The essential role of the Al element in oxidation resistance, high-temperature stability, and workability was reviewed in detail. The roles of oxide-forming elements, i.e., Y (Y2O3), Ti, and Zr, and the solid solution strengthening element, i.e., W, were discussed. Additionally, their reasonable contents were summarized. Typical types of oxide, i.e., Y–Ti–O, Y–Al–O, and Y–Zr–O, and their formation mechanisms were also discussed in this paper. Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy is the best choice to replace beryllium bronze alloy. This alloy has unparalleled application value in aerospace, ocean engineering, electronic information, equipment manufacturing, and other fields. However, the application of Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy is challenged and limited because of a series of problems in its preparation and processing, such as easy segregation, difficult deformation, and discontinuous precipitation. It is an effective way to improve the comprehensive properties of Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy using alloying design and process optimization to control the as-cast, deformed, and heat-treated microstructures. At present, it is a hot spot for scholars to study. In this paper, the grade generation, system evolution, and preparation technology development of Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy are comprehensively reviewed. The phase transformation sequence of the Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy is discussed. The influence of the type, amount, and existing form of alloying elements on the strength of Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy and its mechanism are systematically summarized. Furthermore, the latest research progress on the effects of solid solution, cold deformation, and aging on the phase structure transformation and mechanical properties of Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy is summarized. Finally, the future development trend of the Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloy is projected. The research results of this paper can provide a reference for the control of the microstructure and properties of high-performance Cu–15Ni–8Sn alloys used in key fields, as well as the optimization of the preparation process and alloy composition. This paper presents research on the degradation processes of the fresco painting in the cave church of Corbii de Piatră Hermitage under the influence of meteoric infiltration water and environmental factors. The medieval fresco dates from the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, being painted on a sandstone wall. The infiltration of meteoric water through this wall, the temperature variations, the environment and the repeated wetting/drying processes determined the degradation of the fresco, resulting in its detachment from large surfaces. This research established correlations between the processes that take place, the structural transformations, the changes in composition and the adhesion of the fresco to the sandstone wall. The results have been made available to conservation and restoration specialists, in order to choose appropriate materials and technologies. Laser additively manufactured (LAM) Ti-6Al-4V alloy has huge application potential in aerospace structural parts such as turbine blades. However, there are few studies on the fatigue properties of such LAM parts under vibration loading, particularly with regard to anisotropy. In this paper, vibration fatigue properties of LAM Ti-6Al-4V by laser melted deposition were investigated along the transversely deposited (TD) and parallelly deposited (PD) directions. Through the first-order bending vibration experiments, the LAM Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits obvious anisotropic fatigue properties and significant dispersion in fracture position. The fracture morphology analysis reveals that the vibration fatigue failure was mainly dominated by process-induced defects and microstructure. The fatigue strength at 106 cycles of the samples with defect-free failure features (DFF) at initiation sites is 470.9 MPa in PD and 434.2 Mpa in TD, while that of the samples with defect-related failure features (DRF) at initiation sites is 364.2 Mpa in PD and 381.0 Mpa in TD. For the DFF group, the fatigue behavior is controlled by the prior β columnar grains with preferential orientation, which leads to enhanced fatigue crack propagation resistance for the PD samples. For the DRF group, which has lower fatigue lives, the fatigue anisotropy strongly depends on the projection area of the lack-of-fusion defects relative to the loading direction, resulting in better fatigue performance for the TD samples. In this paper, we deal with the issue of asphalt concrete microstructure recognition for further numerical analysis. An efficient reconstruction of the underlying microstructure makes the composite analysis more reliable. We propose for this purpose a methodology based on the image processing and focus on a two-dimensional case (it can be easily used as a part of the 3D geometry reconstruction, however). Initially obtained geometry of the inclusions is further simplified to reduce the cost of the finite element mesh generation. Three straightforward geometry simplification algorithms are used to perform this process in a controlled way. Subsequently, we present the solutions of two problems, i.e., heat flow and elasticity (plane strain), in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the whole elaborated methodology. The numerical results were obtained using the finite element method. Consequently, an error analysis is demonstrated in order to refer the overkill mesh solutions to the ones presented in this study. The main finding of this paper is the efficient methodology dedicated to a digital reconstruction of the asphalt concrete microstructure by the image processing. This paper mainly investigated the effect of the Mn/Ag ratio on the microstructure and room temperature and high-temperature (350 °C) tensile mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat-treated Al-6Cu-xMn-yAg (x + y = 0.8, wt.%) alloys. The as-cast alloy has α-Al, Al2Cu, and a small amount of Al7Cu2 (Fe, Mn) and Al20Cu2 (Mn, Fe)3 phases. After T6 heat treatment, a massive dispersive and fine θ′-Al2Cu phase (100~400 nm) is precipitated from the matrix. The Mn/Ag ratio influences the quantity and size of the precipitates; when the Mn/Ag ratio is 1:1, the θ′-Al2Cu precipitation quantity reaches the highest and smallest. Compared with the as-cast alloy, the tensile strength of the heat-treated alloy at room temperature and high temperature is greatly improved. The strengthening effect of the alloy is mainly attributed to the nanoparticles precipitated from the matrix. The Mn/Ag ratio also affects the high-temperature tensile mechanical properties of the alloy. The high-temperature tensile strength of the alloy with a 1:1 Mn/Ag ratio is the highest, reaching 135.89 MPa, 42.95% higher than that of the as-cast alloy. The analysis shows that a synergistic effect between Mn and Ag elements can promote the precipitation and refinement of the θ′-Al2Cu phase, and there is an optimal ratio (1:1) that obtains the lowest interfacial energy for co-segregation of Mn and Ag at the θ′/Al interface that makes θ′-Al2Cu have the best resistance to coarsening. In recent years, for the structural characteristics and design requirements of the integral rotor and disc shaft of the integrated engine, the welding quality and mechanical properties of superalloy weldments have received increasing attention. In this paper, inertia friction welding (IFW) of FGH96 alloy was carried out using different welding parameters, and the homogeneous connection of FGH96 alloy hollow bars was successfully realized. The microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture failure of the welded joints at room and high temperatures were investigated. The FGH96 alloy IFW joints were divided into the weld nugget zone (WNZ), the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM), and there were significant differences in grain structure and distribution of the γ′ phase in each of the characteristic zones. The microhardness and tensile properties of the IFW joints were investigated, and the results showed an "M"-shaped curve in the microhardness distribution, with the lowest point of hardness observed in the HAZ. The tensile test results indicated that the fracture position moved from the BM to the WNZ with the increase in temperature, the microstructure at the fracture changed significantly and the tensile strength decreased from 1512.0 MPa at room temperature to 1201.3 MPa at 750 °C. The difference in the mechanical properties of the joints was mainly attributed to the changes in the dissolution and precipitation of the γ′ phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TiCp/steel composites are conventionally produced via powder metallurgy. In this paper, a liquid pressure infiltration method was developed to prepare a kind of spherical hierarchical architectured composite, in which spherical TiCp-rich hard phase regions were uniformly dispersed in TiCp-free soft phase region. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the architectured composites were carefully studied and compared with the common composite, as well as the effect of TiCp fraction on the properties. The results show that architecturual design can effectively improve both the toughness and strength of the composites. With TiCp content increasing from 30% to 50%, both the bending strength and the impact toughness of the architectured composites first increase, then decrease, and reach the highest at 40% TiCp. The highest impact toughness reaches 21.2 J/cm2, being 6.2 times that of the common composite and the highest strength being 67% higher. The pressure infiltration method possesses adaptability to varying shapes and sizes of the products, allowing for large-scale preparation. Austenitic stainless steel has high toughness and plasticity; however, it tends to exhibit low yield strength, which severely limits the widespread application of this steel. It can be strengthened by cold working; however, this will cause many defects in the structure. Therefore, annealing treatment must be carried out before use. In this paper, the effects of annealing treatment at different temperatures and times on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cold-rolled 305 stainless steel sheet were studied and the theoretical mechanism was further analyzed to provide better theoretical guidance for production and application. It was found that the microstructure grains obtained by annealing at 850 °C for 30 s were finer and more uniform, and the mechanical properties were also the best, which met the requirements of strong plasticity. Therefore, the rolling and annealing experiments could be carried out again under this annealing condition, and the requirements of the finished product could be finally obtained. At this time, the thickness of the plate was about 0.15 mm, the yield strength was 1238 MPa, and the permeability was below 1.02, which met the production requirements of the metal mask plate. In this paper, the corrosion environment of a railway coal truck was simulated with 1.0%H2SO4 + 3%NaCl solution. The effect of weld toe Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) remelting on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of welded joints of Q450NQR1 high-strength weathering steel was studied. The results show that the weld toe melts to form a remelting area after TIG remelting. After TIG remelting, the weld geometry was improved, and the stress concentration factor decreased from 1.17 to 1.06 at the weld toe, a decrease of 9.4%. TIG remelting refines the microstructure of the weld toe and improves the corrosion resistance of the welded joint. The surface of the TIG-remelted sample is uniformly corroded with no "deep and narrow" pits after the removal of corrosion products. The weight loss rate and corrosion rate of remelted welds are lower than those of unremelted welds. The structure of corrosion products is loose at the initial stage of corrosion, and the corrosion products are transformed into Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 protective rust layers with a dense structure after 480 h of corrosion. With the extension of corrosion time, the tensile strength and percentage elongation of the specimen decreased linearly. The decreasing rates of tensile strength of remelted and unremelted specimens were 0.09 and 0.11, respectively, and the decreasing rates of elongation after fracture were 0.0061 and 0.0076, respectively. This study aims to investigate the effect of hot deformation on commercially available Ti-6246 alloy below its β-transus transition temperature at 900 °C, knowing that the α → β transition temperature of Ti-6246 alloy is about 935 °C. The study systematically applies a thermomechanical processing cycle, including hot rolling at 900 °C and solution and ageing treatments at various temperatures, to investigate microstructural and mechanical alterations. The solution treatments are performed at temperatures of 800 °C, 900 °C and 1000 °C, i.e., below and above the β-transus transition temperature, for 9 min, followed by oil quenching. The ageing treatment is performed at 600 °C for 6 h, followed by air quenching. Employing various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, tensile strength and microhardness testing, the research identifies crucial changes in the alloy's constituent phases and morphology during thermomechanical processing. In solution treatment conditions, it was found that at temperatures of 800 °C and 900 °C, the α′-Ti martensite phase was generated in the primary α-Ti phase according to Burger's relation, but the recrystallization process was preferred at a temperature of 900 °C, while at a temperature of 1000 °C, the α″-Ti martensite phase was generated in the primary β-Ti phase according to Burger's relation. The ageing treatment conditions cause the α′-Ti/α″-Ti martensite phases to revert to their α-Ti/β-Ti primary phases. The mechanical properties, in terms of strength and ductility, underwent an important beneficial evolution when applying solution treatment, followed by ageing treatment, which provided an optimal mixture of strength and ductility. This paper provides engineers with the opportunity to understand the mechanical performance of Ti-6246 alloy under applied stresses and to improve its applications by designing highly efficient components, particularly military engine components, ultimately contributing to advances in technology and materials science. The paper reports on effect of grain-growth inhibitors MgO, Y2O3 and MnCO3 as well as Ca modification on the microstructure, dielectric, ferroelectric and electrocaloric (EC) properties of Ba0.82Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BSSnT). Furthermore, the effects of the sintering time and temperature on the microstructure and the electrical properties of the most promising material system Ba0.62Ca0.20Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BCSSnT-20) are investigated. Additions of MgO (xMgO = 1%), Y2O3 (xY2O3 = 0.25%) and MnCO3 (xMnCO3 = 1%) significantly decreased the mean grain size of BSSnT to 0.4 µm, 0.8 µm and 0.4 µm, respectively. Ba0.62Ca0.20Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BCSSnT-20) gained a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure with an average grain size of 1.5 µm, leading to a maximum electrocaloric temperature change |ΔTEC| of 0.49 K at 40 °C with a broad peak of |ΔTEC| > 0.33 K in the temperature range from 10 °C to 75 °C under an electric field change of 5 V µm−1. By increasing the sintering temperature of BCSSnT-20 from 1350 °C to 1425 °C, the grain size increased from 1.5 µm to 7.3 µm and the maximum electrocaloric temperature change |ΔTEC| increased from 0.15 K at 35 °C to 0.37 K at 20 °C under an electric field change of 2 V µm−1. Our results show that under all investigated material systems, BCSSnT-20 is the most promising candidate for future application in multilayer ceramic (MLC) components for EC cooling devices.
