This research aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the first crack load, flexural strength, and shear strength in reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. The comparison is made between the conventional model developed according to the current design code (ACI building code) and an unconventional approach using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). To accomplish this, a dataset comprising 110 samples of reinforced concrete beams without stirrup reinforcement was collected and utilised to train a Multilayer Backpropagation Neural Network in MATLAB. The primary objective of this work is to establish a knowledge-based structural analysis model capable of accurately predicting the responses of reinforced concrete structures. The coefficient of determination obtained from this comparison yields values of 0.9404 for the first cracking load, 0.9756 for flexural strength, and 0.9787 for shear strength. Through an assessment of the coefficient of determination and linear regression coefficients, it becomes evident that the ANN model produces results that closely align with those obtained from the conventional model. Structurally deficient bridges are commonly retrofitted using conventional methodologies, including reinforced concrete, steel jackets, and fiber-reinforced polymers. Although these retrofit methods aim to improve structural performance, exposure to aggressive environments may undermine the durability performance of the retrofit material. More recently, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has provided an alternative to conventional construction methods, with its superior material characteristics favoring its use in retrofit applications. In this study, a large-scale reinforced concrete (RC) T-beam is constructed and artificially damaged. The T-beam is then retrofitted with an external envelope of UHPC on all faces. Sandblasting is introduced to the surface, providing partially exposed reinforcement in the T-beam to simulate material deterioration. Additional reinforcement is placed in the web and flange, followed by casting the enveloping layer of UHPC around the specimen. The feasibility of this method is discussed, and the structural performance of the beam is assessed by subjecting the beam to cyclic and ultimate flexural loading. This paper presents the results of cyclic and ultimate testing on the RC-UHPC composite T-beam regarding load–displacement, failure mode, and strain responses. The retrofitted T-beam specimen is subjected to a cyclic loading range of 131 kN for 1.576 million cycles. Despite no visible cracks in the cyclic testing, the specimen experiences a 12.22% degradation in stiffness. During the ultimate flexural testing, the specimen shows no relative slip between the two concretes, and the typical flexural failure mode is observed. By increasing the longitudinal reinforcement ratio in the web, the failure mode can shift from localized cracking, predominantly observed in the UHPC shell, toward a more distributed cracking pattern along the length of the beam, which is similar to conventional reinforced concrete beams. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of utilizing geopolymer for repairing reinforced concrete beams. Three types of beam specimens were fabricated: benchmark specimens without any grooves, rectangular-grooved beams, and square-grooved beams. The repair materials employed included geopolymer material, and epoxy resin mortar, while carbon fiber sheets were used as reinforcement in select cases. The repair materials were applied to the rectangular and square-grooved specimens, with the carbon fiber sheets attached to the tension side of the specimens. To evaluate the flexural strength of the concrete specimens, a third-point loading test was conducted. The test results indicated that the geopolymer exhibited higher compressive strength and shrinkage rate compared to the epoxy resin mortar. Furthermore, the specimens reinforced with carbon fiber sheets demonstrated even greater strength than the benchmark specimens. In terms of flexural strength under cyclic third-point loading tests, the carbon fiber-reinforced specimens exhibited the ability to withstand over 200 cycles of repeated loading at 0.8 times the ultimate load. In contrast, the benchmark specimens could only withstand seven cycles. The present study investigates the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams; the longitudinal reinforcing rebars of the beams were corroded and then strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The corrosion of the longitudinal tension reinforcing rebars in eleven beam specimens was accelerated in order to obtain different corrosion levels. Afterwards, the beam specimens were strengthened by bonding one layer of CFRP sheets to the tension side to restore the strength loss due to the corrosion. The failure modes, flexural capacity, and midspan deflection of the specimens with different corrosion levels of the longitudinal tension reinforcing rebars were obtained by the four-point bending test. It was found that the flexural capacity of the beam specimens decreased with the increase in the corrosion level of the longitudinal tension reinforcing rebars and that the relative flexural strength was only 52.5% when the corrosion level was 25.6%. The stiffness of the beam specimens decreased significantly when the corrosion level was higher than 20%. Through a regression analysis of the test results, a model for the flexural bearing capacity of the corroded RC beams strengthened with CFRP was proposed in the study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a study on finite element modeling (FEM) carried out on the ABAQUS platform for the prediction of flexural strength of corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using layers of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Considering different combinations of the degree of reinforcement corrosion and thickness and configuration of UHPC layers, a total of twenty-two corroded, un-strengthened, and strengthened RC beam specimens were tested to record their flexural behavior. Following the flexural testing, the FEM was carried out considering the degradation in the diameter and the yielding strength of the corroded reinforcing bars. The cohesive surface bonding approach was used to simulate the interfacial bond stress slip between the corroded bars and surrounding concrete. The results of the FEM were validated using the experimental test results of the respective beam specimens. The FEM results (including crack pattern, flexural strength, stiffness, and linear and nonlinear behavior of the strengthened RC beams) were found to be in close agreement with the corresponding experimental test results. This indicates that the proposed FEMs can capture the flexural behavior of the corroded RC beams strengthened using layers of UHPC with high accuracy. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out using the validated FEMs to investigate the effects of varying the compressive strength and thickness of UHPC layers on the flexural strength of the corroded strengthened RC beams. Conventional reinforced concrete (RC) structures are commonly associated with the corrosion of steel reinforcement. The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars as flexural reinforcement has become a new promising option. This paper presents a state-of-the art flexural strength on concrete beams reinforced with CFRP bars. Concrete compressive and CFRP bar tensile strain, reinforcement ratio, types of surface treatment on CFRP bar and concrete compressive strength were identified as aspects of behavior. Significant findings in the literature had manifested all aspects of behavior that were affecting the flexural strength, deflections and crack characteristics of CFRP RC beams. In addition, the experimental result on 98 specimens of CFRP RC beams from the literature show that ACI 440.1R-15 and CSA S806-12 standards underestimate the ultimate flexural moment capacity of CFRP RC beams. On the other hand, Kara and Ashour predictions are more accurate with the experimental values. Moreover, hotspot research topics were also highlighted for further considerations in future studies. It is essential to make openings in structural concrete elements to accommodate mechanical and electrical needs. To study the effect of these openings on the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) elements, a numerical investigation was performed and validated using previous experimental work. The effect of the position and dimension of the opening and the beam length on the response of the beams, loads capacities, and failure modes was studied. The simulated RC beams showed different responses, loads capacities, and failure modes depending on the position and dimension of the opening. The transversal near support opening (TNSH) and longitudinal holes (LH) showed lower effects on the load capacities of the beams than the transversal near center opening (TNCH). The supreme reduction percentages of the load capacity (µu%) for beams with TNCH and TNSH were 37.21% and 30.34%, respectively (opening size = 150 × 150 mm2). In addition, the maximum µu% for beam with LH was 17.82% (opening size = 25% of the beam size). The TNSH with a width of less than 18.18% of the beam shear span (550 mm) had trivial effects on the beam's load capacities (the maximum µu% = 1.26%). Although the beams with combined LH and TNCH or LH and TNSH showed different failure modes, they experienced nearly the same load reductions. Moreover, the length of the beam (solid or hollow) had a great effect on its failure mode and load capacity. Finally, equations were proposed and validated to calculate the yield load and post-cracking deflection for the concrete beams with a longitudinal opening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through proper arranging of a hybrid combination of longitudinal fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars and steel bars in the tensile region of the beam, the advantages of both FRP and steel materials can be sufficiently exploited to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility of a concrete beam. In this paper, a methodology for the flexural strength design of hybrid FRP-steel reinforced concrete (RC) beams is proposed. Firstly, based on the mechanical features of reinforcement and concrete and according to the latest codified provisions of longitudinal reinforcement conditions to ensure ductility level, the design-oriented allowable ranges of reinforcement ratio corresponding to three common flexural failure modes are specified. Subsequently, the calculation approach of nominal flexural strength of hybrid FRP-steel RC beams is established following the fundamental principles of equilibrium and compatibility. In addition to the common moderately-reinforced beams, the proposed general calculation approach is also applicable to lightly-reinforced beams and heavily-reinforced beams, which are widely used but rarely studied. Furthermore, the calculation process is properly simplified and the calculation accuracy is validated by the experimental results of hybrid FRP-steel RC beams in the literature. Finally, with the ductility analysis, a novel strength reduction factor represented by net tensile steel strain and reinforcement ratio is proposed for hybrid FRP-steel RC beams. The present study pertains to the load-deflection behavior and cracking moments of concrete beams with hybrid FRP-steel reinforcement. Under and over-reinforced hybrid beams were tested for failure along with reference beams with only steel or FRP reinforcement. The first-cracking moments of the beams were estimated analytically by using different uncracked moments of the inertia and modulus of rupture definitions. The uncracked moment of inertia definitions include the gross and uncracked transformed moments. The adopted modulus definitions are comprised of the experimental values from tests on prisms and the analytical values from the equations in different concrete codes. Furthermore, analytical methods were developed for estimating the deflections of concrete beams with hybrid FRP-steel or only FRP reinforcement. Two different types of elastic moduli, namely the secant modulus corresponding to the extreme compression fiber strain and the ACI 318M-19 modulus, were used in deflection calculations. Closer estimates were obtained by using the secant modulus, particularly in hybrid-reinforced beams. In the post-yielding region of the steel tension reinforcement, the deflection estimates were established to lay in closer proximity to the experimental curve when obtained by adding up the deflection increments instead of directly calculating the total deflections from the elastic curve equation. This study investigates the flexural behavior of normal-strength concrete (NSC) beams that were strengthened with no-slump, high-strength, high-ductility concrete (NSHSDC). A set of slant shear tests was performed to investigate the initial performance of the NSC substrate strengthened with NSHSDC. Slant shear tests considered two types of roughness of interface and five angles of the interface between NSC and NSHSDC. The test results showed that except for specimens with a 75° interface angle, the specimens with high roughness were conformed to the properties (14–21 MPa for 28 days) of the ACI Committee 546 recommendation. For flexural strength tests, NSC beams strengthened with an NSHSDC jacket on the top and bottom sides, three sides, and four sides resulted in strength increments of about 8%, 29%, and 40%, respectively, compared to the beams without NSHSDC jacket. Therefore, the use of NSHSDC is an effective method to improve the performance of NSC beams and is recommended for strengthening reinforced concrete members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reactive powder concrete (RPC), typically with higher compressive strength, is particularly attractive to structural engineers to apply them in infrastructures for enhancing their resistance under severe environments and loads. The main objective of the initial study presented in the paper was to investigate the behavior of two types of these new cementitious materials differing in the nature of microfibers. The RPC mixes were reinforced with steel and then with basalt microfibers. To evaluate the structural performance of developed unconventional materials, properties were investigated experimentally and compared with the control normal concrete mix. Mechanical tests indicated that dispersing fine fibers for making RPC, a mean compressive strength of 198.3 MPa and flexural strength 52.6 MPa or 23.2 MPa, respectively, were developed after 28 days of standard curing at ambient temperatures. In composite structures consisting of steel girders and a concrete slab, it is necessary to prevent the relative slip at the steel and concrete interface using shear connectors. The very high RPC strength enabled a material saving, weight-reduced application of precast construction, and particularly effective joint to steel beams. The investigation of such shear connection efficiency, in the case of the higher strength concrete deck, using standard push-out test specimens was executed. In this study, nine specimens were experimentally tested to analyze the strengthening efficiency of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and the difference in flexural behavior between prestressed and non-prestressed TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that TRM strengthening improves the flexural strength of TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beams with alkali-resistant-(AR-) glass textile as well as that with carbon textile. However, in the case of textile prestressing, the strengthening efficiency for flexural strength of the AR-glass textile was higher than that of the carbon textile. The flexural stiffness of AR-glass textiles increased when prestressing was introduced and the use of carbon textiles can be advantageous to reduce the decreasing ratio of flexural stiffness as the load increased.
