Sulfate attack is one of the drawbacks of cementitious materials for stabilized soils. In the current study, a durability comparison of stabilized soil with cement (Type IV) and waste paper fly ash (WPFA) was conducted. First, the treated soil's unconfined compressive strength (UCS) was tested. Next, the treated soil was subjected to various wetting/drying cycles with various sulfate concentrations and temperatures for a year. In the meantime, samples were taken for DRX, FTIR, and TGA microstructural analyses. Additionally, samples were manufactured to track swelling over an 800 day period. The outcomes show that WPFA's UCS remained constant. Furthermore, ettringite development can be seen in the microstructural studies, however testing on linear displacement over 800 days revealed no significant changes in swelling. Finally, SEM was used to verify the ettringite formation at 360 days in order to confirm the previous findings. All the results indicated that stabilizing soil with 5% of WPFA and 3% of cement IV is possible even in presence of high sulfate concentrations, while maintaining the durability of the structure. In recent years, several studies have reported the recycling of by-products generated by the paper industry and their application to the construction industry. A majority of the existing studies used waste paper sludge ash, and considerable energy is consumed in such incineration processes. This may further contribute to air pollution. In this study, we used waste newspaper (WNP), which underwent a simple crushing process without a separate high-temperature treatment process, and we integrated it in cement mortar. We prepared mortars containing 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0% ground WNP as a cement substitute. Subsequently, the fluidity, compressive strength, tensile strength, carbonation depth, drying shrinkage, and microstructure of the mortars were compared and analyzed. The 28-day compressive strength of the mortar samples with WNP was approximately 3.2–16.1% higher than that of the control sample. The 28-day accelerated carbonation depth of the samples with WNP was approximately 1.03–1.61 mm. Furthermore, their carbonation resistance was approximately 5.2–39.4% higher than that of the control sample. Compressive strength, tensile strength, and carbonation resistance were improved by appropriately using ground WNP as a cement substitute in cement mortar. In this study, the appropriate amount of WNP according to the mechanical properties of cement mortar was found to be 0.4–0.8%, and considering the durability characteristics, the value 0.6 was the most ideal. The edge crush test is the most popular laboratory test in the corrugated packaging industry. It measures the edge crush resistance of a sample in the cross-fiber direction (CD), also known as the ECT index. This parameter is widely used for the specification of the board by its producers. It is also utilized in most analytical formulas describing the load capacity of the packaging. On the other hand, the ECT value can be estimated from both analytical and numerical models based on the basic parameters of each constituent paper. Knowing the compressive strength in CD (commonly known as SCT) and the elastic properties of the individual layers, the sample geometry (i.e., the period and height of the corrugated layer), as well as the boundary conditions, the ECT value can be calculated. This is very useful as new boards can be virtually analyzed before being manufactured. In this work, both detailed numerical models based on finite elements (FE) methods and very simple analytical (engineering) models were used for the ECT calculations. Shotcrete is widely used in mine and civil engineering as supporting structure. A new type of ultra-high-strength shotcrete (UHSSC) with viscosity-enhancing agent was taken as the research object in this paper. A microstructure model of UHSSC under different curing conditions (standard curing, natural curing and film curing) was reconstructed using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT). The grey theory was used to analyze the correlation between pore characteristics and strength of UHSSC. The results showed that the porosity and the pore size of UHSSC were significantly reduced, the compressive strength was obviously improved by the new spraying process. The effects of curing conditions on the pore characteristics and compressive strength of UHSSC were obvious. Under natural curing, the hydration degree was the highest, the maximum pore size was the smallest, and the compressive strength was the highest, reaching 95.8 MPa, but the porosity was the highest. The curing condition had a certain influence on the sphericity distribution of UHSSC pores. Under film curing, the proportion of special-shaped pores (S < 0.4) was the largest and compressive strength was the smallest. There was a good correlation between pore characteristic parameters and the compressive strength of UHSSC under different curing conditions. In particular, the large pore size (D ≥ 5000 µm) and special-shaped pores (S < 0.4) had obvious effects on the strength of UHSSC, and the grey correlation coefficients were 0.8539 and 0.8080, respectively. Additionally, the pore direction of UHSSC had obvious directionality, and the anisotropy of UHSSC may be more prominent than poured specimen. The objective of the research outlined in this paper is to propose an eco-friendly solution that simultaneously contributes to improving the characteristics of polymer composites. The analyzed solution entails the use of recycled aggregate from crushed concrete rubble. The authors conducted experiments to test the consistency, density, flexural strength, compressive strength, and microstructure of polymer concrete (PC) with different proportions of recycled aggregate (RA). It was found that PC with RA had a higher compressive strength, 96 MPa, than PC with natural aggregate, 89.1 MPa, owing to the formation of a double-layer shell of resin and calcium filler on the surface of porous RA grains. Using a resin with a lower viscosity could improve the performance of PC with RA by filling the cracks and penetrating deeper into the pores. RA is a valuable material for PC production, especially when it contains porous grains with poor mechanical properties, which are otherwise unsuitable for other applications. Low-heat Portland cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag are widely used for the preparation of hydraulic concrete. Nevertheless, the effect and mechanism of corrosion on low-heat Portland cement paste mixed with ground granulated blast furnace slag need to be further explored. This paper investigated the impact of ground granulated blast furnace slag on the calcium leaching of low-heat Portland cement paste by evaluating its mass loss, porosity, leaching depth, compressive strength, and Vickers hardness, and comparing it with the leaching performance of ordinary Portland cement paste. Furthermore, the phase composition and morphology of low-heat Portland cement paste containing ground granulated blast furnace slag were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that, after 180 days of soaking in ammonium chloride solution, the mass loss rate, growth rate of porosity, leaching depth, and compressive strength loss rate of low-heat Portland cement paste were 8.0%, 43.6%, 9.1 mm, and 27.7%, respectively, while those of ordinary Portland cement paste were 7.4%, 37.8%, 8.4 mm, and 30.1%, indicating that low-heat Portland cement paste is slightly more damaging than ordinary Portland cement. The addition of ground granulated blast furnace slag could significantly improve the leaching resistance of low-heat Portland cement. For instance, after adding 20% ground granulated blast furnace slag, the above test values were 2.4%, 28.5%, 5.6 mm, and 20.8%, respectively. The reason for this is that ground granulated blast furnace slag has the potential to reduce the porosity of low-heat Portland cement paste, and it can also undergo the secondary hydration reaction with its hydration product Ca(OH)2 to enhance the paste structure. The aim of this paper is to explore an effective model for predicting the compressive strength of concrete using machine learning technology, as well as to interpret the model using an interpretable method, which overcomes the limitation of the unknowable prediction processes of previous machine learning models. An experimental database containing 228 samples of the compressive strength of standard cubic specimens was built in this study, and six algorithms were applied to build the predictive model. The results show that the XGBoost model has the highest prediction accuracy among all models, as the R2 of the training set and testing set are 0.982 and 0.966, respectively. Further analysis was conducted on the XGBoost model to discuss its applicability. The main steps include the following: (i) obtaining key features, (ii) obtaining trends in the evolution of features, (iii) single-sample analysis, and (iv) conducting a correlation analysis to explore methods of visualizing the variations in the factors that exert influence. The interpretability analyses on the XGBoost model show that the contribution to the compressive strength by each factor is highly in line with the conventional theory. This paper investigates the fracture mechanical properties of concrete, using crushed concrete aggregates (CCA) and granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) for partial cement replacement. CCAs made from prefabricated concrete replace 100% of the fine and coarse fractions in concrete recipes with w/c ratios of 0.42 and 0.48. Two pre-treatment methods, mechanical pre-processing (MPCCA) and accelerated carbonation (CO2CCA), are investigated for quality improvements in CCA. The resulting aggregates show an increased density, contributing to an increase in the concrete's compressive strength. The novelty of this paper is the superposition of the effects of the composite parts of concrete, the aggregate and the cement mortar, and their contributions to concrete fracture. Investigations are directed toward the influence of fine aggregates on mortar samples and the influence of the combination of coarse and fine aggregates on concrete samples. The physical and mechanical properties of the aggregates are correlated with mortar and concrete fracture properties. The results show that CCA concrete achieves 70% of the fracture energy values of concrete containing natural aggregates, and this value increases to 80% for GGBS mixes. At lower w/c ratios, MPCCA and CO2CCA concretes show similar fracture energies. CO2CCA fine aggregates are the most effective at strengthening the mortar phase, showing ductile concrete behavior at a w/c ratio of 0.48. MPCCA aggregates contribute to higher compressive strengths for w/c ratios of 0.42 and 0.48. The finite element method is a widely used numerical method to analyze structures in virtual space. This method can be used in the packaging industry to determine the mechanical properties of corrugated boxes. This study aims to create and validate a numerical model to predict the compression force of corrugated cardboard boxes by considering the influence of different cutout configurations of sidewalls. The types of investigated boxes are the following: the width and height of the boxes are 300 mm in each case and the length dimension of the boxes varied from 200 mm to 600 mm with a 100 mm increment. The cutout rates were 0%, 4%, 16%, 36%, and 64% with respect to the total surface area of sidewalls of the boxes. For the finite element analysis, a homogenized linear elastic orthotropic material model with Hill plasticity was used. The results of linear regressions show very good estimations to the numerical and experimental box compression test (BCT) values in each tested box group. Therefore, the numerical model can give a good prediction for the BCT force values from 0% cutout to 64% cutout rates. The accuracy of the numerical model decreases a little when the cutout rates are high. This paper investigates the high temperature resistance performance and mechanism of potassium-activated blended precursor geopolymer with silica fume. The failure morphology, volume, and mass loss, compressive strength deterioration, hydration production, and pore structure are measured and analyzed. The results show that introducing slag into fly ash-based geopolymer could greatly improve the 28 d compressive strength but reduce the thermal stability. In contrast, the partial substitution of fly ash by metakaolin contributes to excellent high temperature resistance with slightly enhanced 28 d compressive strength. After being exposed at 800 °C, the residual compressive strength of F7M3 remains at 37 MPa, almost 114% of the initial ambient-temperature strength. An appropriately enlarged silica fume content in geopolymer results in increased compressive strength and enhanced thermal stability. However, an excessive silica fume content is detrimental to the generation of alkali-aluminosilicate gels and ceramic-like phases and thus exacerbates the high temperature damage. As a new type of backfill material, Self-compacting solidified soil (SCSS) takes the abandoned slurry of cast-in-place piles after dewatering and reduction as the main raw material, which brings a problem of coordinating the working performance with the mechanical property under the condition of high mobility. In this paper, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and metakaolin were introduced as additives to solve this problem. First, the workability and mechanical properties of SCSS were regulated and optimized by means of the water seepage rate test, the flowability test, and the unconfined compressive strength test. Second, this study also used X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the effects of HPMC and metakaolin on the physical phase and microstructure of SCSS. In this way, the results showed that there was a significant impact on the flowability of SCSS, that is, when the dosage reached 0.3%, the water seepage rate of SCSS was reduced to less than 1%, and the compressive strength at 7 days reached its peak. At the same time, HPMC weakened the strength growth of SCSS in the age period of 7 days to 14 days. However, the addition of metakaolin promoted its compressive strength. XRD analysis showed that the additives had no significant effects on the physical phases. And, from the SEM results, it can be seen that although the water-retaining effect of HPMC makes hydration of cement more exhaustive, more ettringite (AFt) can be observed in the microstructure. In addition, it can be observed that the addition of metakaolin can generate more hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H) due to the strong surface energy possessed by metakaolin. In order to further optimize the performance of PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) repair mortar. In this paper, fly ash, talcum powder and wollastonite powder are used as fillers to modify the PMMA repair mortar. The effects of these three fillers on the working performance, mechanical performance and durability of PMMA repair mortar were explored. The study shows that the three fillers have good effect on the bond strength of the repair mortar, in which the fly ash has the best effect on the mechanical performance. The mechanical properties of PMMA repair mortar were best when the amount of fly ash was 60 phr (parts per hundred, representing the amount of the material added per hundred parts of PMMA). At this time, the 28 d compressive strength was 71.26 MPa and the 28 d flexural strength was 28.09 MPa, which increased by 13.31% and 15.33%, respectively. Wollastonite powder had the least negative effect on the setting time of the PMMA repair mortar. When the dosage of wollastonite powder was increased to 100 phr, the setting time was only extended from 65 min to 94 min. When the talc dosage was 60 phr, the best improvement in salt freezing resistance was achieved. After 100 cycles of salt freezing, the mass loss rate and strength loss rate decreased to 0.159% and 4.97%, respectively, which were 75.1% and 37.7% higher than that of the control group. The addition of all three fillers reduced the porosity and the proportion of harmful pores in the mortar. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding how different types of fillers affect PMMA repair mortars, and it also provides theoretical support for the further development of low-temperature rapid repair mortars. Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements are a promising alternative to Portland clinker, however, a thorough understanding of their properties is needed for their broader use in the industry. One of the topics that requires a good understanding is the effect of the w/c ratio on the properties of CSA cements. To this end, the aim of this paper was to provide research into the effects of a w/c ratio in the range of 0.45–0.6 on the properties of fresh and hardened CSA pastes and mortars. For fresh mortars, consistency and setting time, as well as plastic shrinkage tests, were conducted, and were complemented by hydration heat tests, carried out on pastes. For hardened mortars, tests of compressive and flexural strength and dry shrinkage, as well as SEM photography, were conducted. It was found that, regardless of a higher hydration rate, the increase in w/c ratio decreased flexural and compressive strength, as well as shrinkage, while increasing consistency, setting time, and hydration heat. Also observed was a significant decrease in strength between 3 and 7 days of curing in mortars with a high w/c ratio. It can be concluded that, regardless of the hydration rate, low w/c ratios in CSA mortars provide better properties than high w/c ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of calcium nitrite (CN) on improving the mechanical properties and microstructures of early-frozen cement paste. Cement pastes containing 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3% CN were prepared. One batch of samples was frozen at −6 °C for 7 days and then cured at 20 °C, and the other batch of samples was directly cured at 20 °C as a control. The compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistivity of all specimens at different target ages were measured under these two curing conditions. The hydration products and microstructures of typical samples were observed using XRD and scanning SEM. The results showed that the addition of 1.5% CN could promote cement hydration and enhance slurry densification, thereby increasing the compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and electrical resistivity of the slurry, and positively affecting the early freezing resistance of the slurry. However, when the CN dosage exceeded 1.5%, the internal structure of the slurry was loose and porous due to the generation of a large amount of nitrite–AFm, which negatively affects the properties of the cement paste. In addition, the effectiveness of CN is only limited to temperature environments above −6 °C. Concrete antifreeze suitable for lower temperatures still requires further research. Normally, the acidic impurities in hemihydrate phosphogypsum (HPG) must be neutralized when HPG is utilized, and a little amount of calcium hydroxide (CH) is the best choice. In this paper, the effects of excessive CH (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.% and 20 wt.% of HPG) for carbonation curing on the performance of hardened HPG paste were studied. According to the results of macro tests and microanalyses of XRD, TG, SEM-EDS, MIP and N2 physisorption, it could be verified that CaF2, Ca3(PO4)2 and a large amount of nanoscale CaCO3 crystals were produced as a result of neutralization and carbonation, and the compressive strength and the water resistance of carbonated HPG + CH paste were significantly improved due to the effects of nanoscale CaCO3 crystals on pore refinement and the coverage on the surfaces of gypsum crystals of the hardened paste. Therefore, this study suggests a feasible and green method for recycling HPG/PG, with the collaborative effects of neutralization, performance enhancement and reductions in CO2 emissions. Impact tests on post-fire concrete confined by Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer/Plastic (CFRP) sheets were carried out by using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) experimental setup in this paper, with emphasis on the effect of exposed temperatures, CFRP layers and impact velocities. Firstly, according to the measured stress-strain curves, the effects of experiment parameters on concrete dynamic mechanical performance such as compressive strength, ultimate strain and energy absorption are discussed in details. Additionally, temperature caused a softening effect on the compressive strength of concrete specimens, while CFRP confinement and strain rate play a hardening effect, which can lead to the increase in dynamic compressive strength by 1.8 to 3.6 times compared to static conditions. However, their hardening mechanisms and action stages are extremely different. Finally, nine widely accepted Dynamic Increase Factor (DIF) models considering strain rate effect were summarized, and a simplified model evaluating dynamic compressive strength of post-fire concrete confined by CFRP sheets was proposed, which can provide evidence for engineering emergency repair after fire accidents. To study the effects of basalt fibers (BFs), calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs), and modified calcium sulfate whiskers (MCSWs) on the compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete, this paper utilizes Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) to measure the microstructure of concrete and calculate the fractal dimension of pore surface area. The results indicate that both CSWs and BFs can increase the compressive strength of concrete. CSWs can enhance the dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete, while the effect of BFs on the dynamic modulus of elasticity is not significant. The improvement in compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity provided by MCSWs is significantly greater than that provided by CSWs. Both CSWs and BFs can effectively improve the pore structure of concrete and have a significant impact on the surface fractal dimension. CSWs inhibit the formation of ink-bottle pores, while BFs increase the number of ink-bottle pores. Due to the ink-bottle pore effect, the fractal dimension of the capillary pore surface is generally greater than three, lacking fractal characteristics. Low fiber-direction compressive strength is a well-recognized weakness of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. When a CFRP is produced using 3D printing, the compressive strength is further degraded. To solve this issue, in this paper, a novel magnetic compaction force-assisted additive manufacturing (MCFA-AM) method is used to print CFRP laminates reinforced with carbon nanofiber (CNF) z-threads (i.e., ZT-CFRP). MCFA-AM utilizes a magnetic force to simultaneously levitate, deposit, and compact fast-curing CFRP prepregs in free space and quickly solidifies the CFRP laminate part without any mold nor supporting substrate plate; it effectively reduces the voids. The longitudinal compressive test was performed on five different sample types. ZT-CFRP/MCFA-AM samples were printed under two different magnetic compaction rolling pressures, i.e., 0.5 bar and 0.78 bar. Compared with the longitudinal compressive strength of a typical CFRP manufactured by the traditional out-of-autoclave–vacuum-bag-only (OOA-VBO) molding process at the steady-state pressure of 0.82 bar, the ZT-CFRP/MCFA-AM samples showed either comparable results (by −1.00% difference) or enhanced results (+7.42% improvement) by using 0.5 bar or 0.78 bar magnetic rolling pressures, respectively. The effective use of waste materials is one of the key drivers in ensuring sustainability within the construction industry. This paper investigates the viability and efficacy of sustainably incorporating a polylactic acid-type plastic (WP) as a 10 mm natural coarse aggregate (NA) replacement in geopolymer concrete. Two types of concrete (ordinary Portland cement—OPC and geopolymer) were produced for completeness using a concrete formulation ratio of 1:2:3. The ordinary concrete binder control was prepared using 100% OPC at a water/binder ratio of 0.55, while the geopolymer concrete control used an optimum alkaline activator/precursor—A/P ratio (0.5) and sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide—SS/SH volume ratio (1.2/0.8). Using the same binder quantity as the control, four concrete batches were developed by replacing 10 mm NA with WP at 30 and 70 wt% for ordinary and geopolymer concrete. The mechanical performance of the developed concrete was assessed according to their appropriate standards, while a microstructural investigation was employed after 28 days of curing to identify any morphological changes and hydrated phases. The results illustrate the viability of incorporating WP in geopolymer concrete production at up to 70 wt% replacement despite some negative impacts on concrete performance. From a mechanical perspective, geopolymer concrete indicated a 46.7–58.3% strength development superiority over ordinary concrete with or without WP. The sample composition and texture quantified using automated scanning electron microscopy indicated that adding WP reduced the presence of pores within the microstructure of both concrete types. However, this was detrimental to the ordinary concrete due to the low interfacial zone (ITZ) between calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel and WP, resulting in the formation of cracks. One of the main limitations to the use of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites for the external confinement of masonry is the lack of accurate formulas for estimating the compressive strength and ultimate strain of confined members. With the aim of providing a contribution on the topic, the authors have been carrying out studies on the FRCM-confined masonry for some time and, in a recent study, they proposed some formulations for the prediction of compressive strength. In continuity to that work, an analytical study on the ultimate strain of FRCM-confined masonry is presented in this paper, and preliminary models were derived by considering a wide experimental database compiled from the technical literature. The accuracy of the found relationships was examined based on a comparison with the few formulas published in the literature or reported in international guidelines. To this purpose, it is worth highlighting that the current Italian Guidelines CNR-DT 215/2018 do not provide indications about the estimation of the ultimate strain of FRCM-confined masonry, and the study proposed here attempts to provide a contribution to the mentioned document. In this paper, the strength development of a pure steel slag (SS) system with various concentrations of N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis-(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine (THEED) was investigated. The hydration kinetics, pore structure and microstructure of SS pastes with and without THEED were characterized to underscore the working mechanism of THEED. Results show that THEED additions significantly increase the 3, 7 and 28 days compressive strength of hardened SS pastes. The enhancement effect increases with the dosage of THEED. At a concentration of 2000 ppm, THEED increased the compressive strength by 733%, 665%, and 545% at 3, 7 and 28 days, respectively. It is confirmed that THEED additions improve the hydration degree of SS by accelerating hydration of the aluminum phase (C3A, PDF-38-1429; C12A7, PDF-48-1882) and C2F,(PDF 38-0408) to generate Mc (PDF-41-0219) and Pa (PDF-30-0222) in the presence of CaCO3. Also, the hydration degree of silicates is increased by THEED. In this way, THEED additions refine the pore structure of hardened SS paste by increasing the pore volume with a diameter below 300 nm to achieve enhancement. Strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) has the obvious advantages of excellent material properties such as its high tensile and compressive strengths, high tensile strain capacity, and excellent durability against multi-cracking performance with very fine crack widths. In particular, the multi-cracking performance of SHCC during structural utilization is obviously reduced compared to that of SHCC in uniaxial tension tests using dumbbell-shaped specimens of small size. The corresponding tensile strain capacity of SHCC during structural utilization is, thus, significantly decreased compared to that of SHCC in uniaxial tension tests. However, the reduction in the ductility of SHCC during structural utilization has not been sufficiently understood, and further study is required. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the ductility variation of flexural-failed and shear-failed SHCC members as well as the ductility improvement of SHCC members with steel reinforcement compared with that of SHCC in uniaxial tension tests using small-sized specimens. This study focuses on not only the decrease in the crack elongation performance of the SHCC material during structural utilization but also the increase in the crack elongation performance of SHCC members with steel reinforcement. The results demonstrate that the crack elongation performance of flexural-failed and shear-failed SHCC members is significantly reduced compared to that of SHCC in the uniaxial tension tests. Moreover, it was confirmed that steel reinforcement can effectively improve the SHCC member, increasing the strain-hardening capacity and multi-cracking performance. The load-carrying capacity of the flexural-failed SHCC member with steel reinforcement seemed to increase linearly with an increase in the reinforcement ratio, accompanied by an increase in the distribution of multiple fine cracks in the flexural-failed SHCC member with steel reinforcement. Cement production in the world market is steadily increasing. In 2000, it was 1600 million tons, while as of 2013, the annual amount exceeded 4000 million tons. The burning of cement clinker is associated with the generation of waste. It is estimated that the amount of cement kiln dust (CKD), during combustion, reaches about 15–20%, which means 700 million tons per year. However, not all types of by-products are reusable due to high alkali, sulfate, and chloride contents, which can adversely affect the environment. One environmentally friendly solution may be to use CKD in the production of high-performance concrete (HPC), as a substitute for some of the cement. This paper presents a study of the short- and long-term physical and mechanical properties of HPC with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% CKD additives. The experiments determined density, water absorption, porosity, splitting tensile strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and evaluated the microstructure of the concrete. The addition of CKD up to 10% caused an increase in the 28- and 730-day compressive strengths, while the values decreased slightly when CKD concentration increased to 20%. Splitting tensile strength decreased proportionally with 5–20% amounts of CKD regardless of HPC age. Porosity, absorbability, and ultrasonic pulse velocity decreased with increasing cement dust, while the bulk density increased for HPC with CKD. Microstructure analyses showed a decrease in the content of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), acceleration of setting, and formation of wider microcracks with an increase in CKD. From the results, it was shown that a 15% percentage addition of CKD can effectively replace cement in the production of HPC and contribute to reducing the amount of by-product from the burning of cement clinker. Using limestone powder (LP), the by-product of manufactured sand, to replace part of fly ash (FA) or manufactured sand could not only turn waste into treasure and decrease the price of concrete, but could also enhance the performance of concrete and reduce environmental pollution. However, the impact of various LP incorporation methods on the performance of mass concrete was inconsistent. In this paper, the effects of LP on the workability, compressive strength, constrained expansion rate, hydration temperature and impermeability of mass concrete were studied by replacing FA or manufactured sand alone and replacing FA and manufactured sand simultaneously. The results showed that the impact of LP on the performance of mass concrete was equal when it replaced FA alone and FA and manufactured sand at the same time. When the replacement amount was 20%, the workability, expansibility and early strength of concrete were improved, but the later strength and impermeability were slightly reduced. The workability, compressive strength, expansibility and impermeability of mass concrete were improved when manufactured sand was replaced alone, and the optimal dosage was 10%. The LP, moreover, reduced the hydration temperature peak of concrete in three kinds of mixing methods, but the temperature peak appeared earlier. At lower dosages, LP optimized pore structure and promoted the early hydration of cement through filler effects and nucleation effects. When LP replaced manufactured sand, the microstructure of concrete was more dense, so the replacement of manufactured sand had a better effect on the improvement of concrete properties. In this paper, a new preparation technology is developed to make high-alumina coal gangue (HACG) auxiliary cementitious admixture by calcining HACG–Ca(OH)2 (CH) mixture. HACG powders mixed with 20 wt.% CH were calcined within a temperature range of 600–900 °C, and the thermal transformation and mineral phase formation were analyzed. The hydration reaction between activated HACG–CH mixture and cement was also investigated. The results showed that HACG experienced a conventional transformation from kaolinite to metakaolin at 600 °C and finally to mullite at 900 °C, whereas CH underwent an unexpected transformation process from CH to CaO, then to CaCO3, and finally to CaO again. These substances' states were associated with the dehydroxylation of CH, the chemical reaction between CaO and CO2 generating from the combustion of carbon in HACG, and the decomposition of CaCO3, respectively. It is the formation of a large amount of CaO above 800 °C that favors the formation of hydratable products containing Al2O3 in the calcining process and C-A-H gel in the hydration process. The mechanical properties of HACG–cement mortar specimens were measured, from which the optimal calcination temperature of 850 °C was determined. As compared with pure cement mortar specimens, the maximum 28-d flexural and compressive strengths of HACG–cement mortar specimens increased by 5.4% and 38.2%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents and investigates the properties of concrete in which a portion of the cement is substituted with non-sintered Hwangto (NSH), a readily available building material in Asia. Given the inactive nature of NSH, this study aimed to determine the optimal cement replacement ratio and quantitative strength of the material. The unit weight, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and stress–strain of the NSH concrete (NSHC) were evaluated. Additionally, we developed a predictive model for determining compressive strength based on the regression analysis of compressive strength and UPV. The water-to-binder ratio was set to 0.41, 0.33, and 0.28, and the NSH replacement rates in the cement were set to 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% for evaluating various strength ranges. The mechanical property measurements indicated reductions of 5.35% in unit weight, 35.62% in compressive strength, and 6.34% in UPV as the NSH was replaced. Notably, the smallest deviation from plain concrete was observed at a replacement rate of 15%. The scanning electron microscopy analysis results showed that the plain concrete exhibited a crystalloid structure; however, as the NSH replacement rate increased, the amorphous structure and pores increased while unreacted NSH particles were also observed. The X-ray diffraction analysis results demonstrate that the peak intensities for kaolinite and mullite increased as the NSH replacement rate increased, while those of C–S–H gel and CaO showed low peak intensities. Furthermore, the regression analysis concluded that an exponential function was suitable. Consequently, a compressive strength prediction model was developed, and in the error test, the NSHC model demonstrated an average error of <10%, with fewer errors at the lower compressive strength boundaries. The combination of rice husk ash and common concrete both reduces carbon dioxide emission and solves the problem of agricultural waste disposal. However, the measurement of the compressive strength of rice husk ash concrete has become a new challenge. This paper proposes a novel hybrid artificial neural network model, optimized using a reptile search algorithm with circle mapping, to predict the compressive strength of RHA concrete. A total of 192 concrete data with 6 input parameters (age, cement, rice husk ash, super plasticizer, aggregate, and water) were utilized to train proposed model and compare its predictive performance with that of five other models. Four statistical indices were adopted to evaluate the predictive performance of all the developed models. The performance evaluation indicates that the proposed hybrid artificial neural network model achieved the most satisfactory prediction accuracy regarding R2 (0.9709), VAF (97.0911%), RMSE (3.4489), and MAE (2.6451). The proposed model also had better predictive accuracy than that of previously developed models on the same data. In practical engineering applications, silt is prone to liquefaction and quicksand. This paper mainly studies the improvement effects of urease, lignin and their mixture on the strength and liquefaction resistance of silt. Based on the results and phenomena of an unconfined compressive strength and dynamic triaxial test, the improvement effects of the compressive strength, deformation resistance and liquefaction resistance of silt under different improvement schemes are analyzed, and the optimal values of the cement or lignin when enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) technology, lignin alone or EICP and lignin are obtained. The results show that the optimum concentration of the constant temperature and humidity sample (referred to as the constant humidity sample) and the constant temperature immersion sample (referred to as the soaking sample) of urease in the unconfined compressive strength test is 1.0 mol/L, and the compressive strength of the soaking sample is 4.9 MPa, which is 1.56 times that of the constant humidity sample; the optimum addition ratio of the lignin-improved constant humidity sample is 3%, and its compressive strength is 2.07 Mpa; the optimum addition ratio of the samples immersed at constant temperature is 4%, and the compressive strength is 3.05 MPa; when urease combines with lignin to improve silt, 4% is the best lignin addition ratio, the compressive strength of the constant humidity sample reaches 1.57 Mpa and the compressive strength of the soaking sample reaches 3.75 MPa; in the dynamic triaxial multi-stage cyclic load test, all samples were cured at constant humidity sample, and in the urease modified silt scheme, 1.0 mol/L was the optimal cement concentration; in the scheme of improving silt with lignin, 3% is the optimal addition ratio; when 1.25 mol/L cementation solution plus urease crude extract is combined with different ratios of lignin in the experimental scheme, 3% is the best lignin addition ratio. The advancement of eco-friendly technology in the construction sector has been improving rapidly in the last few years. As a result, multiple building materials were developed, enhanced, and proposed as replacements for some traditional materials. One notable example presents geopolymer as a substitute for ordinary Portland concrete (OPC). The manufacturing process of (OPC) generates CO2 emissions and a high energy demand, both of which contribute to ozone depletion and global warming. The implementation of geopolymer concrete (GPC) technology in the construction sector provides a path to more sustainable growth and a cleaner environment. This is due to geopolymer concrete's ability to reduce environmental pollutants and reduce the construction industry's carbon footprint. This is achieved through its unique composition, which typically involves industrial byproducts like fly ash or slag. These materials, rich in silicon and aluminum, react with alkaline solutions to form a binding gel, bypassing the need for the high-energy clinker production required in OPC. The use of such byproducts not only reduces CO2 emissions but also contributes to waste minimization. Additionally, geopolymer offers extra advantages compared to OPC, including improved mechanical strength, enhanced durability, and good stability in acidic and alkaline settings. Such properties make GPC particularly suitable for a range of construction environments, from industrial applications to infrastructure projects exposed to harsh conditions. This paper comprehensively reviews the different characteristics of geopolymers, which include their composition, compressive strength, durability, and curing methods. Furthermore, the environmental impacts related to the manufacturing of geopolymer materials were evaluated through the life-cycle assessment method. The result demonstrated that geopolymer concrete maintains positive environmental impacts due to the fact that it produces fewer carbon dioxide CO2 emissions compared to OPC concrete during its manufacturing; however, geopolymer concrete had some minor negative environmental impacts, including abiotic depletion, human toxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and acidification. These are important considerations for ongoing research aimed at further improving the sustainability of geopolymer concrete. Moreover, it was determined that silicate content, curing temperature, and the proportion of alkaline solution to binder are the major factors significantly influencing the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete. The cement sector is the second largest contributor to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and several efforts have been made to reduce its environmental impact. One alternative that has gained interest in recent years involves the use of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) as clinker/cement replacement. This paper studies the application of MSWI BA in three different ways: (i) aggregate (0 to 100 v/v %), (ii) partial binder substitute (0 to 30 v/v %), and (iii) filler (5 v/v %). It stands out for its approach in characterizing seven distinct BA particle sizes and for the development and analysis of eco-cement mortars with only mechanically pre-treated BA. Hardened state properties showed that the use of BA as aggregate leads to deterioration and efflorescence formation on the surface of the mortars, making this application unfeasible. The replacement of 15 v/v % of OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) by BA and the use of finer (<63 μm) BA as filler caused a decrease in the compressive strength of the mortar, from 15.8 to 9.3 and 11.0, respectively. However, these materials are suitable for use in walls where the minimum required mechanical resistance is 5 MPa. Furthermore, these mortars demonstrated resilience against freeze–thaw cycles and even exhibited increased compressive strength after 25 cycles. Thus, this work showed that MSWI BA can be used as an OPC substitute (up to 15 v/v %) and as a filler, promoting circular economy principles and reducing CO2 emissions related to the construction industry. This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of alkaline environments on natural fibers of plant and mineral origin in concretes. The durability of concrete-based composite materials is influenced by the properties of the reinforcing fiber, and the serviceability of concrete is dependent on its durability. The aim of the present study is to investigate the strength, weight loss %, and surface degradation of jute, sugarcane, coconut, sisal, as well as basalt fibers through an accelerated aging method when used as reinforcements in concrete. The samples were immersed in an alkaline environment of sodium and calcium hydroxide at two different levels of pH for one week. Further, the fibers were immersed in NaOH and Ca(OH)2 solutions of 1 M, 2 M, 4 M, and 6 M concentrations for 48 h in order to investigate the gradual effect of an alkaline environment on the mechanical properties of the fiber. It was concluded that the weight loss % was greatest for jute fibers when used in concrete composite, while there was no significant effect on the basalt fiber samples. The strength of jute fiber in the concrete sample was also most severely affected by the aging process, compared to other fibers. The strength of basalt fibers in a concrete composite was least affected by the aging process. In some cases, the sisal fiber sample showed an increase in fiber tenacity after the aging process due to fibrillation, which might have increased the interfacial area. The fiber microstructure before and after the aging was evaluated through the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analyses of different fibers were carried out to investigate surface degradation. The fiber pull-out strength was found to be the greatest for basalt fiber, followed by jute and sisal. This is indicative of the excellent adhesion of such fibers with cement in a concrete composite. In these cases, the use of sisal fiber results in defibrillation and increased specific surface area. Sugarcane and coconut fibers ruptured due to their inherent weakness and provided only a small increment in the mechanical performance of the concrete. Basalt fiber-reinforced concrete offered the greatest compressive strength, followed by jute and sisal. The environmental impacts of cement manufacturing are becoming a real-time issue that requires attention. This paper investigates the mechanical and physical properties of mortars with finely ground sand as a substitute for cement. The experimental program consisted of three silica sands with a Blaine Specific Surface (BSS) area of 459 m2/kg, 497 m2/kg, and 543 m2/kg and four substitution ratios of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. A total of 12 mixtures have been prepared and tested for comparison to the reference mortar. The pozzolanic effect of the sand was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the fineness variation from 459 m2/kg to 543 m2/kg resulted in an increase of 20% and 30% in water absorption and compressive strength, respectively. However, increasing the substitution ratio from 10% to 40% led to a 40% decrease in mechanical strength and a 25% increase in water absorption. The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated that both factors under study influenced compressive strength and water absorption. The ANalysis of VAriance (ANOVA) confirmed that the proposed regression equations predict the experimental results. This paper presents experimental results on the influence of concrete composition factors on the criterion characterizing the ratio between the compressive strength of activated low-cement concrete and clinker consumption. The investigation was carried out using mathematical planning of the experiments. Experimental and statistical models describing the influence of the fly ash, activating additive (microsilica), consumption of cement and aggregates, as well as the superplasticizer on the strength of low-cement concrete under normal hardening conditions and after steaming were obtained. The values of the clinker efficiency criterion and the mineral additive cementing efficiency coefficient were calculated, and models of these parameters were obtained for the investigated concrete compositions. It was shown that the activating effect of microsilica yields an increase in ash cementing efficiency and clinker efficiency criterion in concrete. This paper deals with the optimization of reactive powder concrete mixtures with respect to the addition of silica fume and the type of polycarboxylate superplasticizer used. First, the properties of reactive powder concrete with eight different commercial polycarboxylate superplasticizers were tested in terms of workability, specific weight, and mechanical properties. It was found that different commercially available superplasticizers had significant effects on the slump flow, specific weight, and compressive and flexural strengths. The optimal superplasticizer (BASF ACE430) was selected for further experiments in order to evaluate the influences of silica fume and superplasticizer content on the same material properties. The results showed that the silica fume and superplasticizer content had considerable effects on the mini-cone slump flow value, specific weight, flexural and compressive strengths, and microstructure. There were clearly visible trends and local minima and maxima of the measured properties. To ensure a limited washout loss rate and the self-compaction of underwater concrete, the mix proportion design of underwater non-dispersible concrete is a key technology that has not been completely mastered. In view of this aspect, an orthogonal test study was carried out in this paper on the workability, washout resistance, and compressive strength of underwater non-dispersible concrete. Six factors with five levels were considered, which included the water/binder ratio, the sand ratio, the maximum particle size of the coarse aggregate, the content of the dispersion resistance agent, the content of superplasticizer, and the dosage of fly ash. Using a range and variance analysis, the sensitivity and significance of these factors were analyzed on the slump and slump-flow, the flow time, the washout loss rate, the pH value, and the compressive strength at the curing ages of 7 days and 28 days. The results indicated that the water/binder ratio and the content of the dispersion resistance agent were strong in terms of their sensitivity and significance on the workability and washout resistance, and the water/binder ratio and the dosage of fly ash were strong in terms of their sensitivity and significance on the compressive strength. With the joint fitness of the test results, formulas for predicting the slump-flow, washout loss rate, and compressive strength of underwater non-dispersible concrete were proposed considering the main impact factors. This paper conducts an experimental study on the axial compressive performance of FRP-steel-concrete composite columns. Nine short columns were produced and evaluated in the study, comprising of three concrete-filled steel tube reference columns and six FRP-steel-concrete composite columns, respectively denoted as "reference columns" and "composite columns". Two categories of failure modes, including shear failure and waist drum, were observed from the experiments. The failure mode may trend toward waist drum from shear failure as more FRP layers were used. The number of FRP layers had a direct effect on the level of compressive strength attained, with a greater number of layers resulting in a greater increase in compressive strength. Moreover, a greater tensile strength and higher elastic modulus of CFRP sheets are more effective at improving the compressive stiffness of the columns. Finally, a four-stage confinement mechanism for FRP-wrapped steel tube concrete composite columns is proposed and discussed, through which the damage mechanisms of the composite structures are more rationally characterized. Due to the increase in working hours, the reliability of rubber O-ring seals used in hydraulic systems of transfer machines will change. While traditional methods can only analyze one of the material properties or seal properties, the failure of the O-ring is caused by these two factors together. In this paper, two factors are mainly analyzed: the degradation of material properties and load randomization by processing technology. Firstly, the two factors are defined in terms of material failure and seal failure, before the experimental methods of rubber materials are studied. Following this, the time-variant material properties through experiments and load distribution by monitoring the processing can be obtained. Thirdly, compressive stress and contact stress have been calculated, which was combined with the reliability model to acquire the time-variant reliability for the O-ring. Finally, the life prediction and effect of oil pressure were discussed, then compared with the actual situation. The results show a lifetime of 12 months for the O-ring calculated in this paper, and compared with the replacement records from the maintenance workshop, the result is credible. Geopolymer cement (GPC) is a sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) that considerably cuts the emission of carbon dioxide linked to the building of concrete structures. Over the last few decades, while a large number of papers have been written concerning the use of GPC with natural aggregates and OPC with recycled aggregates, few papers have been devoted to investigating the use of Geopolymer Recycled Aggregate Concrete (GRAC) in structural members. Most of them show more interest in the mechanical strength of the material, rather than the structural behavior of RC members. This review critically compiles the present and past research on the behavior of structural members cast with different types and compositions of GRAC. The focus is on the few research studies investigating the structural behavior of GRAC elements, with an analysis of the load-bearing capacity, the load-deflection mechanism, shear behavior, tensile and flexural strength, and ductility of GRAC structural members. Phosphogypsum is an industrial byproduct from the wet preparation of phosphoric acid. Phosphorus building gypsum can be obtained from phosphogypsum after high-thermal dehydration. This study aimed to analyze the influence of ball milling with different parameters on the strength of phosphorus building gypsum. In this paper, the absolute dry flexural strength and the absolute dry compressive strength of phosphorus building gypsum were compared under different mass ratios of material to ball, ball-milling speed, and ball-milling time, and the NSGM (1,4) model was applied to model and predict the strength of phosphorus building gypsum modified by ball milling. According to the research results, under the same mass ratio of material to ball and ball-milling speed, the absolute dry flexural strength and absolute dry compressive strength of phosphorus building gypsum firstly increased and then decreased with the increase in milling time. The NSGM (1,4) model established in this paper could effectively simulate and predict the absolute dry flexural strength and the absolute dry compressive strength of the ball-milling-modified phosphorus building gypsum; the average relative simulation errors were 12.38% and 13.77%, and the average relative prediction errors were 6.30% and 12.47%. This paper puts forward a new soft soil reinforcement technology—microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) technology—which considers the problem of dredger fill soft-soil reinforcement in Dalian Taiping Bay. In this paper, the calcium carbonate content (CCC) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of microbial solidified dredger fill (MSDF) samples were determined using laboratory experiments. The microstructure and chemical composition of MSDF samples were studied by SEM–EDS and XRD. The failure and reinforcement mechanism of MSDF under different experimental conditions (ambient temperature, cementation solution concentration, and clay content) were investigated. The results showed that there was a certain residual strength after the peak strength of MSDF. With the increase of ambient temperature, the number of microorganisms increased, but the activities of urease, CCC, and UCS decreased. The UCS and CCC increased with the increase of cementation solution concentration, while they first increased and then decreased with the increase of clay content. The clay content enhanced the compactness of MSDF samples but reduced the soil permeability and weakened the mineralization. Closed-cell metal syntactic foam is a new material consisting of hollow spheres embedded in metal matrix syntactic foams. These foams have good physical and mechanical properties and are increasingly used worldwide in industrial and high-tech fields. Magnesium matrix syntactic foams containing hollow Al2O3 spheres ((Al2O3hs)/AZ91D) were successfully fabricated by hot press sintering at different temperatures. The fabrication of Al2O3hs/AZ91D and the effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and properties are reported in this paper. Additionally, sandwiched magnesium matrix syntactic foams were prepared by placing magnesium plates on both sides of the syntactic foam. Some Al2O3hs particles became filled with matrix particles during preparation. Thus, the actual density was greater than the theoretically calculated value and increases with increasing sintering temperature. Above 723 K, a brittle phase MgAl2O4 formed in Al2O3hs/AZ91D. The quasistatic and dynamic compressive strengths of Al2O3hs/AZ91D first increased and then decreased with increasing sintering temperature, and the maximums were 162 MPa and 167.87 MPa, respectively. Thus, this paper reports a new strategy for the controlled preparation of metal matrix syntactic foams with predetermined porosity. This paper investigates the effectiveness of applying continuous high-compression pressure on the initial setting of fresh concrete to produce hardened concrete materials with excellent mechanical properties. A novel experimental apparatus was self-designed and used for the pre-setting pressure application. The utilization of the completely decomposed granite (CDG) soil as an alternative aggregate in concrete production was also explored. A total of twenty-eight specimens were fabricated using two types of fine aggregates, six mix ratios, two initial pressure values, and two distinct durations of the initial pressure application. The density and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the specimens were examined to evaluate their mechanical qualities, while micro-CT tests with image analysis were used to quantify their porosity. The results indicated that the 10 MPa initial pre-setting pressurization can effectively eliminate the excess air and voids within the fresh concrete, therefore enhancing the mechanical properties of the hardened concrete specimens of various types. Compared with non-pressurized specimens, the porosity values of pressurized specimens were reduced by 73.11% to 86.53%, the density values were increased by 1.43% to 8.31%, and the UCS values were increased by 8.42% to 187.43%. These findings provide a reference for using a continuous high pre-setting compression pressure and using CDG soil as an aggregate in the fabrication of concrete materials with improved mechanical performance. Urban construction generates significant amounts of construction residue soil. This paper introduces a novel soil stabilizer based on industrial waste to improve its utilization. This stabilizer is primarily composed of blast furnace slag (BFS), steel slag (SS), phosphogypsum (PG), and other additives, which enhance soil strength through physical and chemical processes. This study investigated the mechanical properties of construction residue soil cured with this stabilizer, focusing on the effects of organic matter content (Oo), stabilizer dosage (Oc), and curing age (T) on unconfined compressive strength (UCS). Additionally, water stability and wet–dry cycle tests of the stabilized soil were conducted to assess long-term performance. According to the findings, the UCS increased with the higher stabilizer dosage and longer curing periods but reduced with the higher organic matter content. A stabilizer content of 15–20% is recommended for optimal stabilization efficacy and cost-efficiency in engineering applications. The samples lost their strength when immersed in water. However, adding more stabilizers to the soil can effectively enhance its water stability. Under wet–dry cycle conditions, the UCS initially increased and then decreased, remaining lower than that of samples cured under standard conditions. The impact of perforation patterns on the compressive strength of cardboard packaging is a critical concern in the packaging industry, where optimizing material usage without compromising structural integrity is essential. This study aims to investigate how different perforation designs affect the load-bearing capacity of cardboard boxes. Utilizing finite element method (FEM) simulations, we assessed the compressive strength of packaging made of various types of corrugated cardboards, including E, B, C, EB, and BC flutes with different heights. Mechanical testing was conducted to obtain accurate material properties for the simulations. Packaging dimensions were varied to generalize the findings across different sizes. Results showed that perforation patterns significantly influenced the compressive strength, with reductions ranging from 14% to 43%, compared to non-perforated packaging. Notably, perforations on multiple walls resulted in the highest strength reductions. The study concludes that while perforations are necessary for functionality and aesthetics, their design must be carefully considered to minimize negative impacts on structural integrity. Saline soil in Western China contains high concentrations of chloride ions, sulfate ions, and other corrosive ions, and the performance of concrete will substantially deteriorate from exposure to this environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to study and predict the concrete compressive strength in saline soil environments. In this paper, the effects of corrosion on concrete were analyzed from the aspects of surface damage, damage depth, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the corrosion products. The effects of corrosion were quantified by damage depth and corrosion depth. Then, considering the corrosion effects combined with Fick's diffusion law, a time-dependent model of concrete compressive strength and a time-dependent model of damage depth were established. The results show that the deterioration of concrete gradually developed from the surface to the interior, and that the interface of the concrete specimen was equivalent to three parts: a failure zone, a filling zone, and an undisturbed zone. The results also showed that the time-varying model of concrete compressive strength proposed by the author was fully applicable, with an error of less than five percent. The service life of concrete predicted by the damage depth was found to be about 253 months (21.1 years), and the service life predicted by the time-varying compressive strength model was about 187 months (15.6 years). Both prediction results were far less than the normal concrete service life of 50 years. In addition, the long-term compressive strength of the corroded concrete was about 90% of that of the noncorroded concrete, which did not deteriorate with the corrosion time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The properties of prepared foamed lightweight soils (FLSs) using prefabricated foam requires high foam stability. This paper investigates the geometrical characteristics of different foam densities, different types of foaming agents in the air, and the presence of slurry. Then, it studies their effects on the pore structure and mechanical properties of FLS. Results show that with the increase in foam density the bleeding rate of foam in the air for 1 h increases and the foam with a foam density of 50 kg/m3 is the most stable in the air. The stability of foam in slurry is not directly related to the property of foam in the air. The FLS prepared with the same foaming agent had the best performance with the FLS designed with a foam density of 50 kg/m3, which had the smallest average pore size and the most minor pore size distribution, and had the highest compressive strength. Among the three different foaming agents, Type-S was the best, and the slurry had the lowest rate of increase in wet density after the defoaming test, indicating that the foam had the best stability in the cement slurry. The FLS prepared with the density of 50 kg/m3 using the Type-S foaming agent and mixed with the slurry of cement, fly ash:slag:water = 105:105:140:227.5, was hardened to a mean pore size of 299 μm, and the 7 days, 28 days, and 56 days compressive strengths were 0.92 MPa, 2.04 MPa, and 2.48 MPa, respectively, which had the smallest average pore size and the highest compressive strength among the FLSs prepared using the three foaming agents. Yellow phosphorus slag (YPS) is a byproduct from the production of yellow phosphorus. It has potential pozzolanic activity and can be used as a supplementary cementitious material. However, the early strength of cement mortar decreases significantly with increasing YPS dosage, which restricts the utilization of YPS in cement and concrete. This study aimed to increase the pozzolanic activity of YPS ash by thermal activation. The strength method, alkali dissolution method and polymerization degree method were used to evaluate the effect of thermal activation at different temperatures on the pozzolanic activity of YPS ash. The results showed that YPS ash calcined at 800 °C helps to enhance the early strength because the fluorine in cuspidine (Ca4Si2O7F2) is insoluble, reducing the retarding effect on the mortar. The higher late strength of YPS ash calcined at 100 °C was due to the low polymerization degree of [SiO4]. The pozzolanic activity of YPS ash is positively correlated with the dissolution concentration of (Si + Al) and the compressive strength and negatively associated with the polymerization degree. In this paper, permeable geopolymer concrete with high compressive strength and permeability is prepared using alkali-activated metakaolin as a slurry, and its mechanical properties are reinforced by adding steel fibers. The influencing factors of the strength, porosity and permeability coefficient of the fiber-reinforced permeable geopolymer concrete, as well as its microstructure and curing mechanism, are determined by conducting an unconfined compressive strength test, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The test results show that, under the water permeability required to meet the specification conditions, when the alkali activator modulus is 1.4 and the activation-to-solid ratio is 0.9, the effect of metakaolin activation is the most obvious, and the unconfined compressive strength of the permeable geopolymer concrete is the highest. Moreover, the paste formed via the alkali activation of metakaolin contains a large number of silica–oxygen and aluminum–oxygen bonds with a dense and crack-free structure, which enables the paste to tightly combine with the aggregates; the strength of the permeable geopolymer concrete is early strength, and its strength at a curing age of 3 days is the highest. The strength at a curing age of 3 days can reach 43.62% of the 28-day strength; the admixture of steel fiber can effectively improve the strength of the permeable concrete, and with an increase in the amount of admixture, the strength of the fiber shows a trend of increasing, and then decreasing. The effects of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in pressurized aqueous solution on the dehydration of CaSO4·2H2O to form α-hemihydrate gypsum (α-HH) phase and the regulation of crystal shape were studied in this paper in order to provide guidance for the low-cost and high-value utilization of phosphogypsum. The results showed that H3PO4 can significantly accelerate the formation rate of the α-HH phase and that it did not participate in the formation of the α-HH phase in the form of eutectic phosphorus during crystalline phase transformation. In terms of crystal shape regulation, H3PO4 can impact the effect of a citric acid crystal regulator on α-HH crystal shape regulation. The more H3PO4 added, the greater the aspect ratio of α-HH. Accordingly, the water consumption and 2 h dry compressive strength of α-HH products were gradually increased and decreased with an increase in H3PO4 content, respectively. Despite this, the compressive strength of α-HH can still meet the requirements of the α20 grade in JC/T 2038-2010 "α High Strength Gypsum" in China when the H3PO4 content was limited to less than 0.4%. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests and the complete results of the implementation of the Sprint fast-setting concrete technology used during the reinstallation of the concrete pavement of the DK50 road (the Młodzieszyn bypass). The problem of concrete pavement repair is related to economic and social costs and, above all, to long repair time. After an extensive analysis of various technologies, the authors created a dedicated solution, which, based on commonly existing materials, allows for a very quick repair of the existing pavement. The obtained properties of the fast-setting concrete allow the maintenance of rheological parameters for 2 h from its production and to install the mixture of the consistency of class S3/S4, while the obtained compressive strength exceeds 25 MPa within 6 h of installation. The concrete parameters obtained after 24 h show a strength exceeding 40 MPa, and after 28 days—exceeding 60 MPa. The tensile strength at shattering exceeds 5 MPa, while the tensile strength at flexural strength exceeds 7 MPa. In addition, all parameters of the fast-setting concrete meet the highest requirements currently set for newly built concrete pavement loaded by very heavy traffic. The most important parameter is the possibility to shorten the repair time of concrete pavement to one day, significantly reducing the social costs associated with closing a single lane or the entire road. An important element of the presented technology is the possibility of producing the mixture at a stationary concrete batching plant, and in the future—with the use of bags for patching potholes in road pavement.
