The axial tensile properties of FRP mesh-reinforced ECC composites (TRE) were investigated experimentally under the consideration of four influencing factors: grid type, number of reinforcement layers, ECC matrix thickness, and sticky sand treatment on the grid surface. The test results showed that the axial stiffness and tensile strength of the composite were significantly increased, and the tensile properties were significantly improved under the effect of FRP grid reinforcement. Increasing the thickness of the ECC matrix can obviously improve the crack resistance of composites. The ultimate tensile strength of FRP lattice-reinforced ECC composites increased significantly with the increase in the number of lattice layers, but had no significant effect on the crack resistance. The tensile properties of CFRP grid-reinforced ECC composites were slightly better compared to BFRP grid-reinforced ECC composites. The crack resistance and ultimate tensile strength of the composites were slightly improved by impregnating the surface of the FRP grid with adhesive-bonded sand treatment. Based on the experimental data, the tensile stress–strain constitutive model of FRP grid-reinforced ECC composites is established. The calculation results show that the theoretical values of the model agree well with the experimental values. In the present work, an aluminum metal matrix reinforced with (Al2O3) nanoparticles was fabricated as a surface composite sheet using friction stir processing (FSP). The effects of processing parameters on mechanical properties, hardness, and microstructure grain were investigated. The results revealed that multi-pass FSP causes a homogeneous distribution and good dispersion of Al2O3 in the metal matrix, and consequently an increase in the hardness of the matrix composites. A finer grain is observed in the microstructure examination in specimens subjected to second and third passes of FSP. The improvement in the grain refinement is 80% compared to base metal. The processing parameters, particularly rotational tool speed and pass number in FSP, have a major effect on strength properties and surface hardness. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and the average hardness are improved by 25% and 46%, respectively, due to presence of reinforcement Al2O3 nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microstructural and mechanical characterization of 10 vol% SiC particles (SiCp) reinforced 6061 Al-based composite fabricated by powder thixoforming (PTF) was investigated in comparison with the PTF and permanent mold cast (PMC) 6061 monolithic alloys. The results reveal that the microstructure of the PMC alloy consists of coarse and equiaxed α dendrites and interdendritic net-like eutectic phases. However, the microstructure of the PTF composite, similar to that of the PTF alloy, consists of near-spheroidal primary particles and intergranular secondarily solidified structures except SiCp, which are distributed in the secondarily solidified structures. The eutectics amount in the PTF materials is distinctly lower than that in the PMC alloy, and the microstructures of the former materials are quite compact while that of the latter alloy is porous. Therefore, the PTF alloy shows better tensile properties than the PMC alloy. Owing to the existence of the SiC reinforcing particles, the PTF composite attains an ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of 230 MPa and 128 MPa, representing an enhancement of 27.8% and 29.3% than those (180 MPa and 99 MPa) of the PTF alloy. A modified model based on three strengthening mechanisms was proposed to calculate the yield strength of the PTF composite. Zinc-based alloys represent one of the most highly developed areas regarding biodegradable materials. Despite this, some general deficiencies such as cytotoxicity and poor mechanical properties (especially elongation), are not properly solved. In this work, a Zn-5Mg (5 wt.% Mg) composite material with tailored mechanical and superior corrosion properties is prepared by powder metallurgy techniques. Pure Zn and Mg are mixed and subsequently compacted by extrusion at 200 °C and an extrusion ratio of 10. The final product possesses appropriate mechanical properties (tensile yield strength = 148 MPa, ultimate tensile strength = 183 MPa, and elongation = 16%) and decreased by four times the release of Zn in the initial stage of degradation compared to pure Zn, which can highly decrease cytotoxicity effects and therefore positively affect the initial stage of the healing process. In this study, both AZ91 alloy and nano-SiCp/AZ91 composite were subjected to multi-pass forging under varying passes and temperatures. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy were compared with its composite. After six passes of multi-pass forging at a constant temperature of 400 ℃, complete recrystallization occurred in both the AZ91 alloy and composite. The decrease of temperature and the increase of passes for the multi-pass forging led to further refinement of dynamic recrystallized grains and dynamic precipitation of second phases. The grain size of the nano-SiCp/AZ91 composite was smaller than that of the AZ91 alloy under the same multi-pass forging condition, which indicated that the addition of SiC nanoparticles were beneficial to grain refinement by pinning the grain boundaries. The texture intensity for the 12 passes of multi-pass forging with varying temperatures was increased compared with that after nine passes. The ultimate tensile strength is slightly decreased while the yield strength was increased unobviously for the AZ91 alloy with the decrease of temperature and the increase of the passes for the multi-pass forging. Under the same condition of multi-pass forging, the yield strength of the composite was higher than that of the AZ91 alloy due to the Orowan strengthening effect and grain refinement strengthening resulting from externally applied SiC nanoparticles and internally precipitated second phases. By comparing the microstructure and mechanical properties between the AZ91 alloy and nano-SiCp/AZ91 composite, the strength-toughness properties of the composites at room temperature were affected by the matrix grain size, texture evolution, SiC nanoparticles distribution and the precipitated second phases. This paper investigates the effects of the reinforcement ratio, volume fraction of steel fibers, and prestressing on the uniaxial tensile behavior of carbon textile reinforced mortar (CTRM) through uniaxial tensile tests. The results show that the tensile strength of CTRM specimens increases with the reinforcement ratio, however the textile–matrix bond strength becomes weaker and debonding can occur. Short steel fibers are able to improve the mechanical properties of the entire CTRM composite and provide additional "shear resistant ability" to enhance the textile–matrix bond strength, resulting in finer cracks with smaller spacing and width. Investigations into the fracture surfaces using an optical microscope clarify these inferences. Increases in first-crack stress and tensile strength are also observed in prestressed TRM specimens. In this study, the combination of 1% steel fibers and prestressing at 15% of the ultimate tensile strength of two-layer textiles is found to be the optimum configuration, producing the highest first-crack stress and tensile strength and the most reasonable multi-cracking pattern. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was proposed to enhance the mechanical performance of engineered cementitious composite in this research. A mixture of engineered cementitious composite with better expected performance was made by adding 2% PVA fiber. Mechanics tests, including pressure resistance, fracture resistance, and ultimate tensile strength, were conducted. They reveal that the engineered cementitious composites not only exhibit good pressure resistance, but they also exhibit excellent fracture resistance and strain capability against tensile stress through mechanics tests, including pressure resistance, fracture resistance, and ultimate tensile resistance. To further improve the engineered composites' ductility, attempts to modify the performance of the PVA fiber surface have been made by using a vinyl acetate (VAE) emulsion, a butadiene–styrene emulsion, and boric anhydride. Results indicated that the VAE emulsion achieved the best performance improvement. Its use in fiber pre-processing enables the formation of a layer of film with weak acidity, which restrains the hydration of adjacent gel materials, and reduces the strength of transitional areas of the fiber/composite interface, which restricts fiber slippage and pulls out as a result of its growth in age, and reduces hydration levels. Research illustrates that the performance-improvement processing that is studied not only improves the strain of the engineered cementitious composites, but can also reduce the attenuation of the strain against tensile stress.
