Various contents of carbon fibers (CFs) and potassium titanate whiskers (PTWs) were added to an Fe-based impregnated diamond bit (IDB) matrix to enhance its adaptability to percussive–rotary drilling. A series of mechanical tests were conducted successively to find the effects of the reinforcing materials on the properties of the Fe-based IDB samples. Then, the fracture surfaces of the samples were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and the worn surfaces and abrasive debris of the samples were analyzed using a laser scanning confocal microscope and SEM. The results show that both the CF and PTW can effectively improve the hardness and bending strength of an Fe-based IDB matrix, and those parameters reached their maximum values at the additive amount of 1 wt%. However, the CF had a better enhancement effect than the PTW. Furthermore, the CF improved the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix, with a minimum wear rate of 2.38 g/min at the additive amount of 2 wt%. However, the PTW continuously weakened the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix with increases in its content. Moreover, the morphologies of the worn surfaces indicated that the minimum roughness of the CF-reinforced IDB matrix decreased significantly to as low as 4.91 μm, which was 46.16% lower than that without CF, whereas the minimum roughness of the PTW-reinforced samples decreased by 11.31%. Meanwhile, the abrasive debris of the CF-reinforced samples was more uniform and continuous compared to that of the PTW-reinforced samples. Overall, the appropriate addition of CF or PTWs can enhance the mechanical properties of Fe-based IDB matrices, which can be used on different formations based on their impact wear resistance. Commercially available photovoltaic (PV) modules typically consist of individual silicon half-cut cells that are electrically interconnected. This interconnection method results in gaps between the cells, which do not contribute to the overall PV output power. One approach to enhance the cell-to-module power ratio is the placement of white, diffuse reflecting plastic material within these gaps. Conventionally, the process of generating reflective patterns involves several discrete steps, including film deposition, resist patterning, etching, and resist stripping. This study presents an innovative single-step procedure for the direct deposition of zinc reflective patterns onto glass substrates using laser-induced backward transfer (LIBT) and a nanosecond pulsed laser system. The process successfully produced lines and squares, demonstrating its versatility in achieving diverse geometric patterns under ambient atmospheric pressure and room temperature conditions. The evaluation of the transferred patterns included an examination of geometric dimensions and surface morphology using a 3D microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis at the air/Zn interface. Additionally, the thickness of the zinc film and its adhesion to the glass substrate were quantified. This in vitro study aimed to assess the presence of microgaps at the implant–abutment interface in monolithic zirconia partial implant-supported fixed prostheses on transepithelial abutments versus Ti-base abutments. Methods: Sixty conical connection dental implants were divided into two groups (n = 30). The control group consisted of three-unit bridge monolithic zirconia connected to two implants by a transepithelial abutment. The test group consisted of monolithic zirconia three-unit restoration connected to two implants directly by a titanium base (Ti-base) abutment. The sample was subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles at 5 °C to 55 °C, dwelling time 50 s) and chewing simulation (300,000 cycles, under 200 N at frequencies of 2 Hz, at a 30° angle). The microgap was evaluated at six points (mesiobuccal, buccal, distobuccal, mesiolingual, lingual, and distolingual) of each implant–abutment interface by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U tests (p > 0.05). Results: The SEM analysis showed a smaller microgap at the implant–abutment interface in the control group (0.270 μm) than in the test group (3.902 μm). Statistically significant differences were observed between both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The use or not of transepithelial abutments affects the microgap size. The transepithelial abutments group presented lower microgap values at the interface with the implant than the Ti-base group in monolithic zirconia partial implant-supported fixed prostheses. Back-scattered electron imaging and X-ray elemental mapping were combined in a tabletop scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate cross-sections of three AA-type (mignon) nickel–metal hydride (NiMH) batteries from different manufacturers. All batteries underwent 500–800 charge/discharge cycles and reached their end of lifetime after several years as they could no longer hold any significant electric charge (less than 20% of nominal charge capacity), but none showed any short-circuiting. The types of degradation observed in this field study included electrode swelling, metallic nickel formation and carbon incorporation into pores in the positive electrodes and, in the negative electrodes, metal alloy segregation of different elements such as nickel, lanthanum and, in one case, sodium, as well as grain break-up and pore formation. All these phenomena could readily be observed at rather small magnifications. This will be important for the improvement of NiMH batteries, for which new generations with nominally slightly increased charge capacities are being marketed all the time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an experimental study of the wet freeze–thaw (FT) durability of a fibre–polymer composite produced by vacuum infusion using an innovative bio-based unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and basalt fibres. As the benchmark, an equivalent composite produced with a conventional (oil-based) UPR was also tested. The composites were preconditioned in water immersion for 30 days at 20 °C followed by exposure to wet FT for up to 300 cycles; each FT cycle consisted of 3 h in dry freezing condition (−20 °C) and 8 h in thawing condition (23 °C) submerged in water. The composites' properties were assessed after preconditioning and after 100, 200, and 300 FT cycles, through mechanical (tensile, compressive, in-plane shear, interlaminar shear) and thermomechanical (dynamic mechanical analysis) tests. Gravimetric and scanning electron microscope analyses were also carried out. The results obtained show that the preconditioning stage, involving water immersion, caused most of the damage, with property reductions of 5% to 39% in the bio-composite, while in the oil-composite they ranged between 4% and 22%, being higher for matrix-dominated properties. On the other hand, FT alone had an insignificant effect on the degradation of material properties; after exposure to FT, property recovery was observed, specifically in matrix-dominated properties, such as interlaminar shear strength, which recovered by 12% in the bio-composite during exposure to FT. The overall performance of the bio-composite was inferior to the conventional one, especially during the preconditioning stage, and this was attributed to the hydrophilicity of some of the components of its bio-based resin. This research explores the welding process of a high-entropy CrMnFeCoNi alloy with iron, unraveling the intricate chemical compositions that materialize in distinct regions of the weld joint. A mid-wave infrared thermal camera was deployed to monitor the cooling sequences during welding. A thorough analysis of the metallographic sample from the weld joint, along with measurements taken using a nano-hardness indenter, provided insights into the hardness and Young's modulus. The element distribution across the weld joint was assessed using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an EDS spectrometer. Advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy underscored the prevalence of the martensitic phase within the weld joint, accompanied by the presence of bcc (iron) and fcc phases. In contrast, Young's modulus in the base metal areas displayed typical values for a high-entropy alloy (202 GPa) and iron (204 GPa). The weld joint material displayed substantial chemical heterogeneity, leading to noticeable concentration gradients of individual elements. The higher hardness noted in the weld (up to 420 HV), when compared to the base metal regions (up to 290 HV for CrMnFeCoNi alloy and approximately 150 HV for iron), can be ascribed to the dominance of the martensitic phase. These findings provide valuable insights for scenarios involving diverse welded joints containing high-entropy alloys, contributing to our understanding of materials engineering. Nuclear magnetic resonance can only quantitatively obtain porosity and pore size distribution, but as a conventional microstructure observation technology, scanning electron microscope (SEM) can select different magnifications to observe the microstructure of backfill materials. However, the processing of SEM images is not deep enough. In this paper, Image-Pro Plus 6.0 software was used to extract the data from SEM images, and the parameters of the area, and the perimeter, aspect ratio and roundness of the pores in the SEM images were obtained. The fractal characteristics of the pores in the SEM image were obtained by using the slit island method fractal theory. The concretization and quantification analysis of the pores' complexity were achieved. A functional relationship model for the strength and pore parameters was constructed; thus, the influence law of pore characteristics on strength was quantitatively analyzed. The conclusions included: (1) Pore parameters indicate that most pores in backfill are irregular, and only a few pores are regular—however, the whole structure has good fractal characteristics (R2 > 0.96). (2) The fractal dimension of pores is directly proportional to the roundness, the aspect ratio, and the pore content of pores—which indicates that the complexity of pores is related to both pore shape and pore content. (3) The strength had a linear inverse relationship with the roundness, aspect ratio, pore content, and fractal dimension—which indicates that all characteristics of pores have a certain influence on the strength. Different collagen barrier membranes come in various sources and crosslinking that may affect barrier function and tissue integration. This study investigated barrier function and tissue integration of the three different collagen membranes (Jason®: porcine pericardium, GENOSS: bovine tendon, and BioMend® Extend: cross-linked bovine tendon) with human gingival fibroblasts. The barrier function and tissue integration properties were determined under confocal microscopy. Morphological characteristics were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Our results showed that all collagen membranes allowed a small number of cells to migrate, and the difference in barrier function ability was not significant. The cross-linked characteristics did not improve barrier ability. The native collagen membrane surfaces allowed evenly scattered proliferation of HGF, while the cross-linked collagen membrane induced patchy proliferation. Statistically significant differences in cell proliferation were found between Jason and BioMend Extend membranes (p = 0.04). Scanning electron microscope showed a compact membrane surface at the top, while the bottom surfaces displayed interwoven collagen fibers, which were denser in the crosslinked collagen membranes. Within the limitations of this study, collagen membranes of different origins and physical properties can adequately prevent the invasion of unwanted cells. Improved hearing restoration by cochlear implants (CI) is expected by optical cochlear implants (oCI) exciting optogenetically modified spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) via an optical pulse generated outside the cochlea. The pulse is guided to the SGNs inside the cochlea via flexible polymer-based waveguide probes. The fabrication of these waveguide probes is realized by using 6" wafer-level micromachining processes, including lithography processes such as spin-coating cladding layers and a waveguide layer in between and etch processes for structuring the waveguide layer. Further adhesion layers and metal layers for laser diode (LD) bonding and light-outcoupling structures are also integrated in this waveguide process flow. Optical microscope and SEM images revealed that the majority of the waveguides are sufficiently smooth to guide light with low intensity loss. By coupling light into the waveguides and detecting the outcoupled light from the waveguide, we distinguished intensity losses caused by bending the waveguide and outcoupling. The probes were used in first modules called single-beam guides (SBGs) based on a waveguide probe, a ball lens and an LD. In this work, mechanical properties of reinforced polypropylene composites were studied. PP in particulates shape with two different melt flow indexes (MFI) was used, i.e., 3 and 23 g/10 min, namely PP3 and PP23, respectively. Three different materials, namely TiO2 nanoparticle (nTiO2, spherical, 0D), micro-size short carbon fiber (SCF, fiber, 1D), and graphite nanoplatelet (GNP, sheet, 2D), were used as reinforcements/fillers. PP and fillers (in the desired composition) were first pre-mixed by a mechanical mixer. The mixture was then fed to a co-rotating twin-screw extruder for melt-compounding, followed by injection molding to fabricate testing samples. The microstructure and fracture surface of the composites were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical properties. The SEM images stipulate that PP23 had better adhesion and dispersion with the fillers. The results from the SEM images support the mechanical testing results. PP23 composites exhibited more significant improvement in mechanical properties in comparison to PP3. At 5 wt. % filler loading, PP/GNP composite exhibited a greater improvement in mechanical properties compared with two other composites, which are PP/SCF and PP/nTiO2 composites for both PPs. This research utilises a novel heat stage combined with a Zeiss scanning electron microscope to investigate phase changes in iron alloys at temperatures up to 800 ℃ using SE and EBSD imaging. Carbon steel samples with starting structures of ferrite/pearlite were transformed into austenite using the commercial heat treatment process whilst imaging within the SEM. This process facilitates capturing both grain and phase transformation in real time allowing better insight into the microstructural evolution and overall phase change kinetics of this heat treatment. The technique for imaging uses a combination of localised EBSD high temperature imaging combined with the development of high temperature thermal-etching SE imaging technique. The SE thermal etching technique, as verified by EBSD images, enables tracking of a statistically significant number of grains (>100) and identification of individual phases. As well as being applied to carbon steel as shown here, the technique is part of a larger study on high temperature in situ SEM techniques and could be applied to a variety of alloys to study complex phase transformations. Purpose. The aim of this scanning electron microscope (SEM) study was to investigate the interface between the bone and a novel nanostructured calcium-incorporated dental implant surface in humans. Methods. A dental implant (Anyridge®, Megagen Implant Co., Gyeongbuk, South Korea) with a nanostructured calcium-incorporated surface (Xpeed®, Megagen Implant Co., Gyeongbuk, South Korea), which had been placed a month earlier in a fully healed site of the posterior maxilla (#14) of a 48-year-old female patient, and which had been subjected to immediate functional loading, was removed after a traumatic injury. Despite the violent trauma that caused mobilization of the fixture, its surface appeared to be covered by a firmly attached, intact tissue; therefore, it was subjected to SEM examination. The implant surface of an unused nanostructured calcium-incorporated implant was also observed under SEM, as control. Results. The surface of the unused implant showed a highly-structured texture, carved by irregular, multi-scale hollows reminiscent of a fractal structure. It appeared perfectly clean and devoid of any contamination. The human specimen showed trabecular bone firmly anchored to the implant surface, bridging the screw threads and filling the spaces among them. Conclusions. Within the limits of this human histological report, the sample analyzed showed that the nanostructured calcium-incorporated surface was covered by new bone, one month after placement in the posterior maxilla, under an immediate functional loading protocol. The high negative bias of a sample in a scanning electron microscope constitutes the "cathode lens" with a strong electric field just above the sample surface. This mode offers a convenient tool for controlling the landing energy of electrons down to units or even fractions of electronvolts with only slight readjustments of the column. Moreover, the field accelerates and collimates the signal electrons to earthed detectors above and below the sample, thereby assuring high collection efficiency and high amplification of the image signal. One important feature is the ability to acquire the complete emission of the backscattered electrons, including those emitted at high angles with respect to the surface normal. The cathode lens aberrations are proportional to the landing energy of electrons so the spot size becomes nearly constant throughout the full energy scale. At low energies and with their complete angular distribution acquired, the backscattered electron images offer enhanced information about crystalline and electronic structures thanks to contrast mechanisms that are otherwise unavailable. A modern scanning electron microscope equipped with a pixelated detector of transmitted electrons can record a four-dimensional (4D) dataset containing a two-dimensional (2D) array of 2D nanobeam electron diffraction patterns; this is known as a four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM). In this work, we introduce a new version of our method called 4D-STEM/PNBD (powder nanobeam diffraction), which yields high-resolution powder diffractograms, whose quality is fully comparable to standard TEM/SAED (selected-area electron diffraction) patterns. Our method converts a complex 4D-STEM dataset measured on a nanocrystalline material to a single 2D powder electron diffractogram, which is easy to process with standard software. The original version of 4D-STEM/PNBD method, which suffered from low resolution, was improved in three important areas: (i) an optimized data collection protocol enables the experimental determination of the point spread function (PSF) of the primary electron beam, (ii) an improved data processing combines an entropy-based filtering of the whole dataset with a PSF-deconvolution of the individual 2D diffractograms and (iii) completely re-written software automates all calculations and requires just a minimal user input. The new method was applied to Au, TbF3 and TiO2 nanocrystals and the resolution of the 4D-STEM/PNBD diffractograms was even slightly better than that of TEM/SAED. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigated the effectiveness of the combination of chemical and physical methods of natural fibers' modification. The long flax fibers were subjected to various types of modification. These were silanization, plasma modification and a combination of these methods. For the silanization process, two types of silanes were used: amino- and vinylsilane. The application of structurally different compounds allowed us to acquire knowledge about the effect of the modifier structure on its properties. Various properties of flax fibers were investigated, comparing the results before and after different modification processes. The flammability of prepared samples were tested by pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter (PCFC). In the effect of the natural fibers' modifications, flammability was reduced even by 30%. The thermal stability of modified fibers increased. The FTIR tests of the gases released during thermal degradation of the tested fibers allowed us to determine the important compounds and prove a lower degree of flax-fiber decomposition after modification. Flax fibers were also tested to evaluate their physical properties (linear mass, average diameter, aspect ratio and hygroscopicity). Changes in surface morphology were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The objective of this study is the characterization of a novel experimental flowable giomer (G) regarding water sorption, water solubility, and the microstructural characteristics, in comparison to three commercial giomers: Beautifil flow Plus X F00 (B-F00), Beautifil flow F02 (B-F02) and Beautifil flow Plus X F03 (B-F03), Shofu, Kyoto, Japan. Methods: Water sorption/solubility was performed by weighing the specimens before and after water immersion for 1, 2, 3, 14, 21 and 30 days. Data analysis was carried out with the software Origin2019b Graphing & Analysis using the ANOVA test and the Tukey test for post hoc comparison of the groups of materials. The microstructural analyses were done with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results showed significant differences between the tested materials (p < 0.05). For sorption, the Tukey test indicated differences between all four sample groups, except between B-F02 and B-F03, which exhibited no differences in any of the investigation days. The Tukey test also showed significant differences regarding solubility between all sample groups in the 30-day interval. A novel ceria-stabilized zirconia-alumina-aluminate composite (Ce-TZP-comp) that is not prone to aging presents a potential alternative to yttrium-stabilized zirconia for ceramic oral implants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of a one-piece narrow-diameter implant made of Ce-TZP-comp. Implant prototypes with a narrow (3.4 mm) and regular (4.0 mm) diameter were embedded according to ISO 14801, and subgroups (n = 8) were subsequently exposed to dynamic loading (107 cycles, 98N) and/or hydrothermal treatment (aging, 85 °C). Loading/aging was only applied as a combined protocol for the 4.0 mm diameter implants. One subgroup of each diameter remained untreated. One sample was cross-sectioned from each subgroup and evaluated with a scanning electron microscope for phase-transformation of the lattice. Finally, the remaining samples were loaded to fracture. A multivariate linear regression model was applied for statistical analyses (significance at p < 0.05). All samples withstood the different loading/aging protocols and no transformation propagation was observed. The narrow diameter implants showed the lowest fracture load after combined loading/aging (628 ± 56 N; p < 0.01), whereas all other subgroups exhibited no significantly reduced fracture resistance (between 762 ± 62 and 806 ± 73 N; p > 0.05). Therefore, fracture load values of Ce-TZP-comp implants suggest a reliable intraoral clinical application in the anterior jaw regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the healthcare environment, bandage systems are versatile medical devices to position and fix patients' torsos or extremities. In this study, the mechanical and morphological properties of an innovative patient position system, iFix, were assessed and compared to two commercially available bandages. Morphological properties were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The iFix bandage showed anisotropic mechanical properties, with a more rigid behavior in the longitudinal direction and a more elastic behavior in the transverse direction. This behavior results from the organization of the fibers visible in the SEM images. All three materials investigated in this study were able to support similar maximum loads. In cases where a rigid fixation of patient limbs or torso is necessary, the authors recommend the usage of iFix. The residual stress of thin films during the deposition process can cause the components to have unpredictable deformation and damage, which could affect the service life and reliability of the microsystems. Developing an accurate and reliable method for measuring the residual stress of thin films at the micrometer and nanometer scale is a great challenge. To analyze the residual stress regarding factors such as the mechanical anisotropy and preferred orientation of the materials, information related to the in-depth lattice strain function is required when calculating the depth profiles of the residual strain. For depth-resolved measurements of residual stress, it is strategically advantageous to develop a measurement procedure that is microstructurally independent. Here, by performing an incremental focused ion beam (FIB) ring-core drilling experiment with various depth steps, the digital image correlation (DIC) of the specimen images was obtained. The feasibility of DIC to FIB images was evaluated after the translation test, and an appropriate procedure for reliable results was established. This paper established a microstructure-related hardness model of a polycrystalline Ni-based superalloy GH4720Li, and the sizes and area fractions of γ' precipitates were extracted from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images using a deep learning method. The common method used to obtain morphological parameters of γ' precipitates is the thresholding method. However, this method is not suitable for distinguishing different generations of γ' precipitates with similar gray values in SEM images, which needs many manual interventions. In this paper, we employ SEM with ATLAS (AuTomated Large Area Scanning) module to automatically and quickly detect a much wider range of microstructures. A deep learning method of U-Net is firstly applied to automatically and accurately segment different generations of γ' precipitates and extract their parameters from the large-area SEM images. Then the obtained sizes and area fractions of γ' precipitates are used to study the precipitate stability and microstructure-related hardness of GH4720Li alloy at long-term service temperatures. The experimental results show that primary and secondary γ' precipitates show good stability under long-term service temperatures. Tertiary γ' precipitates coarsen selectively, and their coarsening behavior can be predicted by the Lifshitz–Slyozov encounter modified (LSEM) model. The hardness decreases as a result of γ' coarsening. A microstructure-related hardness model for correlating the hardness of the γ'/γ coherent structures and the microstructure is established, which can effectively predict the hardness of the alloy with different microstructures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of using a 445 nm laser on dental implants by comparing it with a laser with 970 nm wavelength. Two models, a pig mandible and glass ionomer cement, were used to evaluate the temperature increase in dental implants during laser irradiation with both wavelengths. Temperature was measured every second at four different places on the dental implants. Different power settings, effects of water cooling, distance of the laser fibre to the dental implant and continuous comparison to a pulsed laser beam were tested. Surface alterations on titanium discs after laser irradiation for 4 min at 2.0 W, were analysed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The maximum temperature and time to reach each of the thresholds were comparable between the 445 nm and 970 nm lasers. Neither the 445 nm nor the 970 nm wavelength showed any signs of surface alterations on the titanium discs. Using a 445 nm laser on dental implants is as safe as using a 970 nm laser, in terms of temperature increase and surface alterations. Applying a generous amount of cooling water and irradiating in short intervals is important when using lasers on dental implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A deleterious Laves phase forms in the solidified structure of Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy during laser cladding. However, effective removal methods have not yet been identified. In this study, we first added the IN718 alloy cladding layers with a trace amount of vanadium (V, 0.066 wt.%). Then, we studied the solidification structure of cladding layers using a confocal laser scanning microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructure and Laves phase morphology were investigated. The distribution of niobium (Nb) was observed by experiment as well. We found that V is evenly distributed in dendrites and interdendritic zones. A more refined dendrite structure, reduced second dendrite arm spacing and lower volume fraction of Laves phase were observed in the solidification structure. The results of linear energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) indicate that the concentration of Nb decreases with an increasing of the distance from the Laves phase. The V-containing sample displayed a relatively slower decreasing tendency. The IN718 alloy sample was harder with the addition of V. Recycled aggregates (RA) from construction and demolition can be used in permeable concretes (PC), improving the environment. PCs have a significant porous network, their cement paste and the interaction between the paste and the RA establishing their strength. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the porosity in the interfacial transition zones. The porosity of the cement paste, the aggregate and the interfacial transitional zones (ITZ) of a PC with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) and silica fume (SF) is measured by means of image analysis–scanning electron microscope (IA)-(SEM) and by mapping the chemical elements with an SEM-EDS (energy dispersive spectrometer) detector microanalysis linked to the SEM and, as a contrast, the mercury intrusion porosimetry technique (MIP). In the IA process, a "mask" was created for the aggregate and another for the paste, which determined the porosity percentage (for the anhydrous material and the products of hydration). The results showed that using SF caused a reduction (32%) in the cement paste porosity in comparison with the PC with RA. The use of RA in the PC led to a significant increase (190%) in the porosity at different thicknesses of ITZ compared with the reference PC.
