Keratin waste, including keratin powder, is a significant byproduct of the poultry processing and meat industries. It is a major contributor to waste management problems due to its volume and the environmental pollutants that it can produce. The disposal of keratin waste is challenging due to the potential for odors and pathogens to enter the soil and water. The aim of this work is to present the possibility of using waste materials in accordance with the principles of upcycling and producing fully valuable products. In this research, the author focuses on the production and research of textile multilayer laminates using keratin flour that had been previously considered waste material. New textile composites should be characterized by increased thermal insulation properties with constant comfort in use. This research determines the physiological comfort interpreted as the state of the human–laminate system, which maintains the conditions of comfort in human perception, i.e., constant temperature and humidity of the body under changing conditions of a relative humidity environment. The structure of a fabric is a highly complex assembly of fibres, which have order and regularity as well as disorder and randomness. The complexity of the structure poses challenges in defining its mechanical behaviour, particularly at low stress, which is typical to end uses. The coexistence of multiple deformations and the high degree of nonlinearity of the fabric due to fibre friction make its stress–strain relationship complicated. This article reviews the literature on friction related to the low-stress mechanics of fabrics, and it establishes its range and regularity to help with finding a unified reference model, in which although the physical meanings of fabric tensile, shear, and bending vary, they follow consistent mathematical regularities. So, invariably, their disorder and randomness needed in defining them can be obtained from fabric measurement data. It defines the scope and patterns of friction to facilitate the development of a unified reference model. It argues that although the physical interpretations of fabric tensile, shear, and bending characteristics may differ, they adhere to consistent mathematical regularities within this model, and hence extracting disorder and randomness from fabric measurement data may be achievable. This paper concludes with a number of recommendations, postulating that hysteresis caused by friction between fibres in a fabric is an important component of mechanical information, and it coexists with its purely elastic component, but it cannot be obtained directly by measurement. Seeking means to effectively decompose the friction hysteresis and pure elastic components contained in fabric mechanics measurement data will provide an accurate characterization of fabric mechanical properties and hence an accurate modelling and simulation of its behaviour, and will impact many traditional and industrial textile end uses. The emphasis of this study is placed on the investigation into the failure mechanisms of the fabric membranes when exposed to such defective cracks. This experimental study investigates the initial crack of a flat circle and conducts a uniaxial shear test on the membrane materials. The deformation of the membrane materials is obtained through an optical non-contact scanner. Our study has been conducted to assess the crack propagation of fabric membrane materials at different angles. The relationships between crack width and stress together with stress and strain are also obtained. Based on the results, a mechanic of failure on the membrane was proposed. Moreover, new findings into the ductility and energy absorption of the fabric membrane materials have been established to inform the failure mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper introduces an innovative strain energy function (SEF) for incompressible anisotropic fiber-reinforced materials. This SEF is specifically designed to understand the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber-woven fabric. The considered model combines polyconvex invariants forming an integrity basisin polynomial form, which is inspired by the application of Noether's theorem. A single solution can be obtained during the identification because of the relationship between the SEF we have constructed and the material parameters, which are linearly dependent. The six material parameters were precisely determined through a comparison between the closed-form solutions from our model and the corresponding tensile experimental data with different stretching ratios, with determination coefficients consistently reaching a remarkable value of 0.99. When considering only uniaxial tensile tests, our model can be simplified from a quadratic polynomial to a linear polynomial, thereby reducing the number of material parameters required from six to four, while the fidelity of the model's predictive accuracy remains unaltered. In this study the influence of fabric weave (plain, twill, and panama) and weft type (flax and hemp yarns) on selected mechanical and comfort properties of six fabrics was analyzed. The results showed that tear and abrasion properties were most affected by the weave. The tensile properties of the linen fabrics were not significantly different when weft hemp yarns were used instead of flax. Fabrics with the same weave seemed to be equally resilient to abrasion regardless of the type of weft. By contrast, the hemp weft yarns favorized the physical and comfort properties of the investigated fabrics. For the same weave, the hemp–linen fabrics were slightly lighter and exhibited lower bulk density, significantly larger air permeability, and improved moisture management properties. Although the results of maximum thermal flux (Qmax) suggested a cooler sensation of the linen fabrics with panama and twill, the hemp–linen fabric with a plain weave seemed to be the optimal choice when a cool sensation was desired. Higher thermal conductivity values also suggested slightly better heat transfer properties of the hemp–linen fabrics, and these were significantly influenced by the weave type. This article presents studies on the evaluation of the impact of surface modification of cotton, viscose, and polyester fabrics using three techniques (flocking, layer by layer, and screen printing) with materials with electrically conductive properties on their structural, biophysical, and conductive properties. Each tested fabric is characterized by specific biophysical properties. which can be disturbed by various modification methods, therefore, the following tests were carried out in the article: optical microscopy, micro-computed tomography, guarded perspiration heating plate, air permeability, sorption and electrical conductivity tester. The use of screen printing increased the thermal resistance of the cotton woven fabric by 119%, the polyester woven fabric by 156%, and the viscose fabric by 261%. The smallest changes in thermal resistance compared to unmodified textiles were observed in layer by layer modified fabrics and are as follows: −15% (cotton woven fabric), +77% (PES woven fabric), and +80% (viscose woven fabric). Porosity, the measure of the open spaces within a fabric structure, is a decisive factor in the performance of textiles. It influences breathability, permeability to liquids or gases, and suitability for various industries such as apparel, medical, and technical textiles. This study compares classical porosity calculation methods with non-destructive image analysis for 24 woven fabric samples that differ in density and weave pattern. Factors such as fabric density, weave pattern, illumination conditions, magnification, and the influence of the Otsu and Yen threshold algorithms were considered. The multifactor ANOVA statistical analysis shows that fabric density and weave pattern significantly influence porosity, with illumination playing an important role, while the threshold algorithm has a minor influence. A strong correlation is found between the actual fabric porosity and the results of the image analysis, except for double-sided illumination (reflective and transmissive), where the correlation is weakest. This comprehensive investigation provides valuable insights into the reliability of different porosity assessment approaches, which is essential for applications in various textile industries. The issue of large deflections of textiles occurs primarily when analyzing the "drape" of curtains, tablecloths and other flat textile products. The correct drape is particularly important from an aesthetic point of view. Additionally, there is a problem with the stability of the folds created during the drape process. The analysis of this problem is difficult due to the occurrence of large deflections and non-linear properties of the material. In this article, a selected fragment of the above-mentioned issue was tested, relating only to the stability of the fold formed under given loading conditions. A typical example is a fabric resting on a flat surface and loaded with compressive forces. The presented considerations lead to obtaining the deflection curve for a given self-weight and compressive force. Additionally, the obtained shape was tested for stability. Two shape parameters used in the analysis can be applied for the simulation of different shapes of the deflection curve. The analysis has been made using the energy method relating to the total potential energy of the object. The obtained results may be used in algorithms and simulation programs for fabric folding, buckling and for another applications in the area of textile mechanics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given their exceptional attributes, aerogels are viewed as a material with immense potential. Being a natural polymer, cellulose offers the advantage of being both replenishable and capable of breaking down naturally. Cellulose-derived aerogels encompass the replenish ability, biocompatible nature, and ability to degrade naturally inherent in cellulose, along with additional benefits like minimal weight, extensive porosity, and expansive specific surface area. Even with increasing appreciation and acceptance, the undiscovered possibilities of aerogels within the textiles sphere continue to be predominantly uninvestigated. In this context, we outline the latest advancements in the study of cellulose aerogels' formulation and their diverse impacts on textile formations. Drawing from the latest studies, we reviewed the materials used for the creation of various kinds of cellulose-focused aerogels and their properties, analytical techniques, and multiple functionalities in relation to textiles. This comprehensive analysis extensively covers the diverse strategies employed to enhance the multifunctionality of cellulose-based aerogels in the textiles industry. Background: Symmetric sigmoidal models with four parameters based on an idealized S/Z-shaped curve are commonly used to analyze the optical parameters of thermochromic materials. However, our experimental findings show that this approach leads to systematic errors involving the incorrect estimation of the transition temperature or the possibility of a virtual indication of the hysteresis nature of a reversible thermochromic change. For this reason, we sought to find a five-parameter model that would appropriately avoid this problem. Methods: Two commercial thermochromic pigments were used for the test and applied to a textile substrate at different concentrations. The optical properties were measured using reflectance spectrophotometry and then converted to Kubelka–Munk function values and colorimetric coordinates. The following statistics were used to assess the quality of the selected sigmoidal models: coefficient of determination, R2; adjusted coefficient of determination, AR2; root mean square error, RMSE; and Akaike Information Criterion, AIC. Results: The four-parameter models were compared with each other and with the five-parameter models using nested F-tests based on residual variance to obtain a statistical measure of superior performance. For all thermochromic color change data examined, the five-parameter models resulted in significantly better fitting. It could be shown that the five-parameter model showed significantly higher accuracy and precision in determining the transition temperature, like non-sigmoidal quantification methods. Conclusions: We concluded that the asymmetric five-parameter model is a valuable extension of the symmetric model in the investigation of thermochromic color changes, providing better parameter estimates and a new approach to investigating the mechanisms contributing to the asymmetry of the thermochromic curve. Textile dyeing is known to have major environmental concerns, especially with the high use of toxic chemicals. The use of alternatives such as natural dyes rich in phenolic compounds has become extremely appealing in order to move towards a more sustainable circular economy. Phenolic dyes have the potential to functionalize textile fabrics with properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV protection. Wastes/residues from the agri-food industries stand out as highly attractive sources of these compounds, with several by-products showing promising results in textile dyeing through the implementation of more sustainable and eco-friendly processes. This review presents an up-to-date exploration of the sources of phenolic compounds used in the textile industry over the past two decades, with a primary focus on the functional properties they provide to different fabrics. The research highlights a surge in interest in this theme since 2017, accentuating a noticeable upward trend. Throughout this review, emphasis is given to by-products from the agri-food industry as the sources of these compounds. The reviewed papers lay the foundation for future research, paving the way for exploring the potential of raw materials and by-products in the creation of functional and smart textiles. In recent years, with the rapid development of the economy and great progress in science and technology, people have become increasingly concerned about their quality of life and physical health. In order to pursue a higher life, various functional and biomimetic textiles have emerged one after another and have been sought after by people. There are many animal and plant surfaces with special wettability in nature, and their unique "micro-nano structures" and low surface energy have attracted extensive attention from researchers. Researchers have prepared various textiles with superhydrophobic features by mimicking these unique structures. This review introduces the typical organisms with superhydrophobicity in nature, using lotus, water strider, and cicada as examples, and describes their morphological features and excellent superhydrophobicity. The theoretical model, commonly used raw materials, and modification technology of superhydrophobic surfaces are analyzed. In addition, the application areas and the current study status of superhydrophobic surfaces for textiles are also summarized. Three-dimensional (3D) spacer fabric has the characteristics of a light weight and high strength, and its unique three-dimensional structure gives it great potential for development in terms of insulation. For the purpose of further improving the thermal insulation performance of 3D spacer fabric, the fabric was treated with silica aerogel while solving the problem of powdering during use. Firstly, the electronic Jacquard machine was modified for weaving spacer fabrics. The ground warp yarns were controlled by two groups of heald frames with various positions of heald eye, forming a double-shuttle. The longitudinal warp yarns were controlled by the Jacquard healdwine to prepare a spacer Jacquard fabric with a spacing of 5 mm. Secondly, polyurethane foam was applied as a carrier to compound with silica aerogel. The experimental results demonstrate that the strength of the composite fabrics is significantly increased, while the toughness is decreased. With the increase in silica aerogel content, the pore size of foam becomes smaller, and the degree of foam fragmentation increases, showing a trend of increasing thermal insulation performance followed by a decreasing insulation performance. Waterproof breathable membranes (WBMs) characterized by a specific internal structure, allowing air and water vapor to be transferred from one side to the other while preventing liquid water penetration, have attracted much attention from researchers. WBMs combine lamination and other technologies with textile materials to form waterproof breathable fabrics, which play a key role in outdoor sports clothing, medical clothing, military clothing, etc. Herein, a systematic overview of the recent progress of WBMs is provided, including the principles of waterproofness and breathability, common preparation methods and the applications of WBMs. Discussion starts with the waterproof and breathable mechanisms of two different membranes: hydrophilic non-porous membranes and hydrophobic microporous membranes. Then evaluation criteria and common preparation methods for WBMs are presented. In addition, treatment processes that promote water vapor transmission and prominent applications in the textile field are comprehensively analyzed. Natural fibers do not have a long life in soil; therefore, they cannot replace synthetic textiles in many applications. However, in order to solve ever-increasing global environmental problems due to microplastics, more and more natural polymers must be used, creating a need for research into the sustainable life extension of natural fibers. Lignin is, along with cellulose, a main component of wood, and is produced in large quantities as waste during paper production. With appropriate processing, lignin can be exploited/used as a textile auxiliary to combine the strength-enhancing properties of textiles made from natural fibers with the protective properties of a lignin coating. However, there is not yet sufficient research on how to integrate lignin into textile applications. For this purpose, in this study, we have investigated whether thermoplastic lignin can be processed as a surface protective coating. We tested lignin as a yarn coating to extend the service life of cellulosic textiles. Cotton yarns have been coated with lignin in variations of coating mass, characterized and investigated by means of soil burial tests. As the soil burial tests conducted in climate chamber and outdoor field environments showed, the lifespan of textiles made from natural fibers can be significantly extended with a lignin coating. Long-term resilience has been demonstrated in standard burial tests. In the outdoor tests, the lignin coating was still fully intact, even after about 160 days of burial. The textile materials coated in this way enable sustainable applications, especially for geotextiles. They have an adjustable, sufficiently long service life; however, they are still biodegradable, and can therefore replace some applications, such as vegetating trench/brook slopes, with synthetic materials. Lignin-coated textiles have the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint, reduce not only the dependence on petroleum-based products but also the amount of microplastics entering the environment. Further research can be conducted to improve lignin compounding in terms of other interesting properties for specific textile applications. Lots of damaged fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) components are replaced by new components instead of repairing. Furthermore, only very labor-intensive repair methods are available on the market to fully restore the integrity of the structure. This requires a high level of experience or, alternatively, very cost-intensive technology, such as the use of computer tomography and robotics. The high costs and CO2 emissions caused by the manufacture of FRP components then bear no relation to their service life. The research project IGF-21985 BR "FRP-Repair" aims to solve the named challenges. Using semiconductor oxide catalysts, the matrix can be locally depolymerized by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and thus removed from the damaged area of the FRP component. Subsequently, the damaged fibers in this area can be detached. By using customized textile repair patches and local thermoset reinfiltration, the repair area is restored. With this process, the fiber structure can be repaired locally with new fibers on the textile level. The repair is similar to the original production of a fiber composite in an infusion process. No additional adhesive material is used. As a result, repaired FRP structures with restored mechanics and a near-original surface can be realized. This article provides an insight into the actual steps of the development of the FRP component repair process using dry textile patches. The empirical investigation of overlapped rovings and UD material showed the expected results. Residual fracture forces of up to 86% could be achieved. The most interesting approach on the roving level was splicing the overlapping fibers. The free ends of the fibers of the patch and part are mechanically bonded. In this study, nonwoven gelatin (Gel) fabrics crosslinked using N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) were characterized and compared with those crosslinked using methylglyoxal (MG) and by thermal dehydration. We prepared Gel with 25% concentration along with Gel/GlcNAc and Gel/MG with a GlcNAc-to-Gel ratio of 5% and MG-to-Gel ratio of 0.6%. A high voltage of 23 kV, solution temperature of 45 °C, and distance of 10 cm between the tip and the collector were applied during electrospinning. The electrospun Gel fabrics were crosslinked by heat treatment at 140 and 150 °C for 1 d. The electrospun Gel/GlcNAc fabrics were treated at 100 and 150 °C for 2 d, while the Gel/MG fabrics were heat-treated for 1 d. The Gel/MG fabrics exhibited higher tensile strength and lower elongation than the Gel/GlcNAc fabrics. Overall, Gel/MG crosslinked at 150 °C for 1 d showed a significant enhancement in tensile strength, high hydrolytic degradation, and excellent biocompatibility, with cell viability percentages of 105 and 130% at 1 and 3 d, respectively. As the focus on physical health increases, the market demand for flexible wearable sensors increases. Textiles combined with sensitive materials and electronic circuits can form flexible, breathable high-performance sensors for physiological-signal monitoring. Carbon-based materials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and carbon black (CB) have been widely utilized in the development of flexible wearable sensors due to their high electrical conductivity, low toxicity, low mass density, and easy functionalization. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in carbon-based flexible textile sensors, highlighting the development, properties, and applications of graphene, CNTs, and CB for flexible textile sensors. The physiological signals that can be monitored by carbon-based textile sensors include electrocardiogram (ECG), human body movement, pulse and respiration, body temperature, and tactile perception. We categorize and describe carbon-based textile sensors based on the physiological signals they monitor. Finally, we discuss the current challenges associated with carbon-based textile sensors and explore the future direction of textile sensors for monitoring physiological signals. This paper describes methods for evaluating the thermal properties of textile materials, clothing composites, and clothing using an integrated measurement system that includes a hot plate, a multi-purpose differential conductometer, a thermal manikin, a temperature gradient measurement device, and a device for measuring the physiological parameters of the human body during the exact evaluation of garment thermal comfort. In practice, measurements were taken on four types of materials widely used in the production of conventional and protective clothing. The measurements were carried out using a hot plate and a multi-purpose differential conductometer, determining the thermal resistance of the material both in its uncompressed form and when a force was applied that was ten times greater than that needed to determine its thickness. Using a hot plate and a multi-purpose differential conductometer, thermal resistances of textile materials were assessed at different levels of material compression. On hot plates, both conduction and convection had an impact on thermal resistance, but in the multi-purpose differential conductometer, only conduction did. Fibre-reinforced composites (FRCs) are already well established in several industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, plant engineering, shipbuilding and construction. The technical advantages of FRCs over metallic materials are well researched and proven. The key factors for an even wider industrial application of FRCs are the maximisation of resource and cost efficiency in the production and processing of the textile reinforcement materials. Due to its technology, warp knitting is the most productive and therefore cost-effective textile manufacturing process. In order to produce resource-efficient textile structures with these technologies, a high degree of prefabrication is required. This reduces costs by reducing the number of ply stacks, and by reducing the number of extra operations through final path and geometric yarn orientation of the preforms. It also reduces waste in post-processing. Furthermore, a high degree of prefabrication through functionalisation offers the potential to extend the application range of textile structures as purely mechanical reinforcements by integrating additional functions. So far, there is a gap in terms of an overview of the current state-of-the-art of relevant textile processes and products, which this work aims to fill. Chemical protective clothing (CPC) has become mandatory when performing various tasks to ensure user protection and prevent chemicals from contacting the skin and causing severe injuries. In addition to protection, there is a need to develop a simple mechanism that can be attached to CPC and be capable of detecting and alerting the user to the presence of harmful chemical agents. In this study, a double-sensor strategy was investigated, using six different pH indicators stamped on cotton and polyester knits to detect acidic and alkaline substances, both liquid and gaseous. Functionalized knits underwent microscopic characterization, air permeability and contact angle evaluation. All samples exhibited hydrophobic behavior (contact angle > 90°) and air permeability values above 2400 L/min/cm2/bar, with the best condition demonstrating a contact angle of 123° and an air permeability of 2412.5 L/min/cm2/bar when the sensor methyl orange and bromocresol purple (MO:BP) was stamped on polyester. The performed tests proved the functionality of the sensors and showed a visible response of all knits when contacting with different chemicals (acids and bases). Polyester functionalized with MO:BP showed the greatest potential, due to its preeminent color change. Herein, the fiber coating process was optimized, enabling the industrial application of the sensors via a stamping method, an alternative to other time- and resource-consuming techniques. The transport of liquid sweat in clothing worn close to human skin is very important from the point of view of the thermo-physiological comfort of clothing users. It ensures the drainage of sweat secreted by the human body and condensed on the human skin. In the presented work, knitted fabrics made of cotton and cotton blends with other fibers (elastane, viscose, polyester) were measured in the range of liquid moisture transport using the Moisture Management Tester MMT M290. The fabrics were measured in unstretched form and stretched to 15%. Stretching of the fabrics was performed using the MMT Stretch Fabric Fixture. Obtained results confirmed that stretching significantly changed the values of parameters characterizing the liquid moisture transport in the fabrics. Before stretching, the best liquid sweat transport performance was stated for the KF5 knitted fabric made of 54% cotton and 46% polyester. For this, the greatest value (10 mm) of maximum wetted radius for the bottom surface was obtained. The Overall Moisture Management Capacity (OMMC) of the KF5 fabric was 0.76. This was the highest value among all values obtained for the unstretched fabrics. The lowest value of the OMMC parameter (0.18) was stated for the KF3 knitted fabric. After stretching, the KF4 fabric variant was assessed as the best one. Its OMMC improved from 0.71 before stretching to 0.80 after stretching. The value of the OMMC for the KF5 fabric remained after stretching at the same level (0.77) than before stretching. The most significant improvement was observed for the KF2 fabric. Before stretching, the value of the OMMC parameter for the KF2 fabric was 0.27. After stretching, the OMMC value increased to 0.72. It was also stated that the changes in the liquid moisture transport performance of the investigated knitted fabrics were different for the particular fabrics being investigated. Mass transport in textiles is crucial. Knowledge of effective mass transport properties of textiles can be used to improve processes and applications where textiles are used. Mass transfer in knitted and woven fabrics strongly depends on the yarn used. In particular, the permeability and effective diffusion coefficient of yarns are of interest. Correlations are often used to estimate the mass transfer properties of yarns. These correlations commonly assume an ordered distribution, but here we demonstrate that an ordered distribution leads to an overestimation of mass transfer properties. We therefore address the impact of random ordering on the effective diffusivity and permeability of yarns and show that it is important to account for the random arrangement of fibers in order to predict mass transfer. To do this, Representative Volume Elements are randomly generated to represent the structure of yarns made from continuous filaments of synthetic materials. Furthermore, parallel, randomly arranged fibers with a circular cross-section are assumed. By solving the so-called cell problems on the Representative Volume Elements, transport coefficients can be calculated for given porosities. These transport coefficients, which are based on a digital reconstruction of the yarn and asymptotic homogenization, are then used to derive an improved correlation for the effective diffusivity and permeability as a function of porosity and fiber diameter. At porosities below 0.7, the predicted transport is significantly lower under the assumption of random ordering. Recently, innovations in textile-reinforced concrete (TRC), such as the use of basalt textile fabrics, the use of high-performance concrete (HPC) matrices, and the admixture of short fibers in a cementitious matrix, have led to a new material called fiber/textile-reinforced concrete (F/TRC), which represents a promising solution for TRC. Although these materials are used in retrofit applications, experimental investigations about the performance of basalt and carbon TRC and F/TRC with HPC matrices number, to the best of the authors' knowledge, only a few. Therefore, an experimental investigation was conducted on 24 specimens tested under the uniaxial tensile, in which the main variables studied were the use of HPC matrices, different materials of textile fabric (basalt and carbon), the presence or absence of short steel fibers, and the overlap length of the textile fabric. From the test results, it can be seen that the mode of failure of the specimens is mainly governed by the type of textile fabric. Carbon-retrofitted specimens showed higher post-elastic displacement compared with those retrofitted with basalt textile fabrics. The bond behavior between the textile and the earth-based matrix determined the reinforcement effectiveness of the composite systems. This paper presented a pull-out experimental study on the glass textile mesh reinforced earth-based matrix. The bond behavior was studied using different development length, mesh spacing size and matrix thickness, with a total of 32 experimental specimens. The test results showed that the peak pull-out force had increased by 31.7% and 40.5% with 200 mm and 300 mm versus 100 mm development length, respectively. The 16 mm compared to 10 mm matrix thickness specimens had a high strength improvement (9.73%) because the elevated thickness had increased the matrix strength. However, the 20 mm versus 10 mm mesh spacing size specimens had achieved a slight reduction (5.72%) due to the reduction in the number of textiles along the weft direction. The failure mode shifted from pulling out, compound modes (both pulling out and textile rupture) to textile rupture mainly accompanied by elevated development length. In addition, we discussed the applicability of the trilinear bond-slip model on the earth-based matrix and proposed a method based on the fracture energy concept for estimating the effective development length, which could provide a reference for future research. The COVID-19 outbreak increased demand for personal protective respirator masks. Textile masks based on cloth materials appeared to be a sustainable, comfortable, and cost-effective alternative available in global communities. In this study, we used laser-based particle counting for mask material qualification to determine the concentration filtering efficiency in general, everyday community use. The efficiencies of eleven different commercially available textile materials were measured in single-, double-, and triple-layer configurations according to their grammage, mesh (XY), and inter-yarn gap. It was found that in the single-layer configurations, most materials were well below the acceptable standards, with a wide variation in filtering efficiency, which ranged from 5% to ~50%. However, when testing the fabrics in two or three layers, the efficiency increased significantly, exceeding or approaching the standard for medical masks. Three layers of natural silk was able to produce a level of filtration efficiency of 84.68%. Two-layered natural silk achieved 70.98%, cotton twill achieved 75.6%, and satin-weave viscose achieved 69.77%. Further options can also be considered in cases where lower filtration is acceptable It was statistically shown that applying a second layer was more significant in terms of overall filtering than increasing the layer count to three. Existing buildings are often in need of strengthening interventions, and several technical solutions have been recently developed for this purpose. Among them, the use of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) composites has gained consensus as a technically viable and economically convenient option. Moreover, TRM has the potential to be employed as a reversible and sustainable strengthening technique for masonry buildings. In this context, the present paper aims to investigate the mechanical properties of TRM systems consisting of sustainable phases, such as lime-based matrices and natural fabrics produced by waiving fibers obtained from plants, such as Jute or Flax. This class composite system can be referred to as natural TRM and is denoted by the acronym NTRM. The present study moves from the geometric and mechanical characterisation of fibres and fabrics and, after having also investigated the properties of the mortar, it reports the results of tensile tests carried out on specimens of the NTRM systems under consideration, with the main aim of providing the empirical bases of the relationships between the geometric and physical properties of the constituents and the resulting mechanical response of the composite system. The obtained results show that the considered Flax-TRM system has an apparent composite behavior, as its response to tension is clearly characterised by the well-known three stages corresponding to the elastic response, the formation of cracks, and the reinforcement response up to rupture. Conversely, the Jute-TRM system needs to be further improved in terms of balance between the properties of the matrix and the internal reinforcement. The integration of electronic functionalities into textiles for use as wearable sensors, energy harvesters, or coolers has become increasingly important in recent years. A special focus is on efficient thermoelectric materials. Copper iodide as a p-type thermoelectrically active, nontoxic material is attractive for energy harvesting and energy generation because of its transparency and possible high-power factor. The deposition of CuI on polyester spacer fabrics by wet chemical processes represents a great potential for use in textile industry for example as flexible thermoelectric energy generators in the leisure or industrial sector as well as in medical technologies. The deposited material on polyester yarn is investigated by electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and by thermoelectric measurements. The Seebeck coefficient was observed between 112 and 153 µV/K in a temperature range between 30 °C and 90 °C. It is demonstrated that the maximum output power reached 99 nW at temperature difference of 65.5 K with respect to room temperature for a single textile element. However, several elements can be connected in series and the output power can be linear upscaled. Thus, CuI coated on 3D spacer fabrics can be attractive to fabricate thermoelectric devices especially in the lower temperature range for textile medical or leisure applications. Earthworks in the vicinity of roads, open mines, subsidence tanks and other man-made objects can lead to the creation of slopes that undergo erosion. One of the methods that can prevent their degradation and reclaim them is the use of geotextiles. An environmentally friendly option is using geotextiles that are produced from reclaimed fibres. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the mechanical and chemical properties of geotextiles, namely, ropes and fibres (containing wool and polypropylene), not only on the rate of the greening of slopes but also on the species composition of vegetation. We studied the floristic composition, species diversity, species growth and soil properties of four sites of reclaimed slopes on which 46 study plots (5 m × 5 m) were laid out. We found that some species were more confined to a higher content of wool and that other species were more confined to the content of polypropylene. Both materials caused a decrease in the Shannon–Wiener diversity but an increase in evenness under the impact of ropes when compared to the control. They both also contributed to a higher mean height of the plants when compared to the control. The rate of the plant colonisation process was markedly improved by the reclaimed geotextiles. Textile materials modified with copper-containing particles have antibacterial and antiviral properties that have prospects for use in healthcare. In the study, textile materials were saturated with copper-containing particles in their entire material volume by the absorption/diffusion method. The antibacterial properties of modified textile materials were confirmed by their inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium that spreads predominantly through the respiratory tract. For the modification, ordinary textile materials of various origins and fiber structures were used. Technological conditions and compositions of modifying solutions were established, as well as the most suitable textile materials for modification. To assess the morphological and physical characteristics of copper-containing particles and the textile materials themselves, X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, and an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum were used. In modified textile samples, XRD data showed the presence of crystalline phases of copper (Cu) and copper (I) oxide (Cu2O). On the grounds of the SEM/EDS analysis, the saturation of textile materials with copper-containing particles depends on the structure of the textile materials and the origins of the fibers included in their composition, as well as the modification conditions and the copper precursor. In this paper, four kinds of polyamide yarns with different graphene contents and three kinds of seamless knitting structures were used. The scheme of samples was established according to the comprehensive experimental design method, and 12 pieces of knitted fabric samples were woven on the seamless knitting machine. Through testing and analyzing the influence of each sample on the blood-flow rate of human-surface-skin microcirculation, the research shows that the higher the content of graphene in the veil, the better the promotion effect of the fabric prepared under this process condition on the blood-flow rate of human-surface-skin microcirculation. Sample 11# with the veil type of GP-0.8% and fabric weave of 1+1 simulated ribbed stitch has the strongest effect in this experiment, with a promotion multiple of 1.2189, and the influence of tissue structure is not obvious. The relevant performance test data and experimental research results in this paper provide empirical data support for developing medical or health textiles related to promoting the blood-flow velocity of skin microcirculation. This paper explores the modeling of physical phenomena that occur in clothing that affect the safety and biophysical comfort of the user. Three-dimensional models of textile assemblies with complex morphology used in firefighters' multilayer protective clothing were designed in a CAD environment. The main goal of the research was to design and experimentally verify (by thermography) the models in terms of simulations when the heat transfer occurs through them in selected ambient conditions using the finite volume method. The designed models took into account the subtle differences in the geometry of selected assemblies determined by high-resolution X-ray microtomography. The designed models made it possible to calculate heat transport with a difference of about 2% to 5% in comparison to experiment that depend on the ambient conditions and the complexity of the model geometry. Moreover, the comparison of the simulation results with the experimental outcomes shows that the mapping of subtle differences in the internal structure of the assemblies in the designed models allows us to observe differences in the modeled heat transfer. The possibility of reactive printability on protective flame—resistant fabrics, varied in composition of weft threads and weave was investigated. In addition, the wash fastness of printed samples was analyzed. The functional properties of fabrics were assessed by measuring of the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI). Printing was performed with two printing pastes varied in thickeners and two dyestuff concentrations. The samples were analyzed by microscopic imaging using digital microscope and spectrophotometric measurement before and after the five washing cycles. So far, no coherent and comprehensive method has been elaborated allowing investigation of tensile strength of upholstery seams dedicated to upholstered furniture. Producers of this type of furniture are interested in the assessment of the quality of upholstery material joints, which seems to be particularly important for ensuring the appropriate quality of products. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the influence of the type of material used and the direction of the fabric cut on the strength of upholstery covers. Static tensile testing of selected upholstery fabric samples was performed, and an attempt was made to identify the most optimal fabric–seam joints. It was stated as a conclusion that the fabric tensile strength was the highest for Secret 10 fabric. In addition, the strength of upholstery covers is not influenced by the direction of the fabric die cut. For each fabric, a different configuration is preferable, as shown by results (Power 13: A-B, Secret 10: B-B, Soft 10: A-A). The method, implemented for upholstered furniture, allows for an objective assessment of the strength of upholstery covers and the selection of the most advantageous fabric–seam combination for future furniture designs. Comfort is an important quality criterion, especially for sportswear. It influences well-being, performance and efficiency. The necessary dissipation of heat and air flow, at high metabolic rates, must be designed and planned in advance. The influence of structure, density, mass and thickness of fabric were considered as well as yarn material composition, yarn linear density, yarn evenness and yarn hairiness. The influence of the mentioned parameters on thermal properties and air permeability was calculated. From the correlation analysis, it can be concluded that yarn's linear density, yarn short fibers hairiness, and mass per unit area of knitted fabric has the greatest impact on heat resistance. The yarn linear density, the yarn hairiness of the longer protruding fibers, and the thickness of the knitted fabric have the greatest impact on air permeability. Wool of mountain sheep, treated nowadays as a waste or troublesome byproduct of sheep husbandry, was used for the production of sound-absorbing materials. Felts of two different thicknesses were produced from loose fibres. Additionally, two types of yarn, ring spun and core rug, were obtained. The yarns were used for the production of tufted fabric with cut and loop piles. During the examinations, basic parameters of the obtained materials were determined. Then, according to standard procedure with the use of impedance tube, the sound absorption coefficient was measured, and the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) was calculated. It was revealed that felt produced from coarse wool exhibits high porosity, and its sound absorbing capacity is strongly related to the felt thickness. For thicker felt the NRC achieved 0.4, which is comparable with the NRC of commercial ceiling tiles. It was shown that the crucial parameter influencing the sound absorption of the tufted fabrics was the pile height. For both types of yarns, when the height of the pile was increased from 12 to 16 mm, the NRC increased from 0.4 to 0.42. The manufactured materials made from local wool possess good absorption capacity, similar to commercial products usually made from more expensive wool types. Generally, comprehensive documents are needed to provide the research community with relevant details of any research direction. This study conducted the first descriptive bibliometric analysis to examine the most influential journals, institutions, and countries in the field of artificial intelligence in textiles. Furthermore, bibliometric mapping analysis was also used to examine diverse research topics of artificial intelligence in textiles. VOSviewer was used to process 996 articles retrieved from Web of Science—Core Collection from 2007 to 2020. The results show that China and the United States have the largest number of publications, while Donghua University and Jiangnan University have the highest output. These three themes have also appeared in textile artificial intelligence publications and played a significant role in the textile structure, textile inspection, and textile clothing production. The authors believe that this research will unfold new research domains for researchers in computer science, electronics, material science, imaging science, and optics and will benefit academic and industrial circles. Down fiber is one of the most superior materials, with excellent thermal properties, that can be used in bedding, clothing, and so on. Down products are usually encapsulated in fabrics that are more compact and, therefore, impart an anti-drilling performance. In this study, down fibers were encapsulated in polypropylene melt-blown nonwoven fabric, and also in polyester woven cloth, to form two different kinds of composite waddings. The waddings made of down fiber encapsulated in melt-blown nonwoven fabrics have a superior moisture permeability, thermal insulation, and anti-drilling performance, and a slightly inferior air permeability compared to that of waddings made with traditional woven fabrics. The pore fractal dimensions of melt-blown nonwoven fabrics are larger than that of woven fabrics. The relationship between the fractal dimension and performance of waddings explains the difference. Microplastics have become one of the most serious environmental hazards today, raising fears that concentrations will continue to rise even further in the near future. Micro/nanoparticles are formed when plastic breaks down into tiny fragments due to mechanical or photochemical processes. Microplastics are everywhere, and they have a strong tendency to interact with the ecosystem, putting biogenic fauna and flora at risk. Polyester (PET) and polyamide (PA) are two of the most important synthetic fibres, accounting for about 60% of the total world fibre production. Synthetic fabrics are now widely used for clothing, carpets, and a variety of other products. During the manufacturing or cleaning process, synthetic textiles have the potential to release microplastics into the environment. The following article describes a new type of textile signal line that can be used in smart clothing. The article presents the structure of this line and the materials used for its construction. The article also presents the results of research on the influence of the line tensile force on the value of its characteristic impedance. The above tests were carried out on lines where the electrically conductive paths do not have the form of straight lines, as is often the case in smart clothing. The article also presents a preliminary statistical analysis, the aim of which was to find those characteristics of the substrate of the line that affect changes in the characteristic impedance during stretching. In this paper, magnetic fibers were integrated with seamless knitting technology. Additionally, the raw materials for the outer fabrics and the relevant yarn feed ratio were designed, including the polypropylene yarn with different magnetic powder contents (0%, 10% and 50%) and its yarn feed ratio (100:0, 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75) to graphene viscose yarn. In addition, weft plain stitch, 1 + 1 mock rib and 1 + 3 mock rib were adopted to weave polyamide fiber/polyurethane fiber wrap yarn as the lining materials into 12 knitted fabric samples on a seamless knitting machine according to the partial addition method in the orthogonal experimental design. As per the test and analysis results of the magnetic flux density on the front and back surfaces of 12 seamless knitted fabrics, polypropylene yarn with different magnetic powder contents in outer fabrics is the most significant factor affecting the magnetic flux density on the surface, followed by the yarn feed ratio of outer fabrics and fabric stitches. The findings in this study can provide a reference and theoretical basis for the specification design of seamless knitted fabrics manufactured by magnetic fabrics to a certain extent. Textile metal threads were used to decorate historical Croatian textiles. There are three basic types of metal threads usually used on historical textiles in Croatia. These are narrow stripes, wires, and combined metal textile yarn called "srma", made of metal thread spirally wrapped around the nonmetal textile yarn. Textile yarns were made of silk, linen, wool, or cotton. Metal threads were primarily made of gold, silver, and copper, and different alloys of these metals or threads are layered in the structure. Analysis of metal threads with three different methods was made and the most adequate method for the analysis of metal threads from historical textiles was established. Metal thread analysis was performed with scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive X-ray detector (SEM-EDX), which was determined to be the most suitable for the analysis of historical textiles if cross-section analysis of metal threads is also performed. Textile threads from combined metal textile threads were analysed with a light microscope. This information of the metal threads' content and structure as well as the composition of textile thread can lead to an understanding of the technology of production threads and also temporal and spatial dating of textile objects which is helpful to conservators and restorers of valuable historical textiles. To solve the microstructure-related complexity of a three-dimensional textile composite, a novel equivalent model was established based on the variational asymptotic method. The constitutive modeling of 3D unit cell within the plate was performed to obtain the equivalent stiffness, which can be inputted into the 2D equivalent model (2D-EPM) to perform the bending, free-vibration and buckling analysis. The correctness and effectiveness of the 2D-EPM was validated by comparing with the results from 3D FE model (3D-FEM) under various conditions. The influence of yarn width and spacing on the equivalent stiffness was also discussed. Finally, the effective performances of 3D textile composite plate and 2D plain-woven laminate with the same thickness and yarn content were compared. The results revealed that the bending, buckling and free-vibration behaviors predicted by 2D-EPM were in good agreement with 3D-FEM, and the local field distributions within the unit cell of 3D textile composite plate were well captured. Compared with the 2D plain-woven laminate, the displacement of 3D textile composite plate was relatively larger under the uniform load, which may due to the fact that the through-the-thickness constrains of the former are only dependent on the binder yarns, while the warp yarns and weft yarns of the latter are intertwined closely. A promising process for the automatization of concrete structures is extrusion or extrusion molding. An innovative approach is the extrusion of concrete with imbedded technical textiles as reinforcement. For a successful extrusion, the rheological properties of the fresh concrete have to be optimized, as it must be extrudable and have sufficient early strength after leaving the mouthpiece. Within the scope of this paper, a process was developed which allows the integration of flexible as well as stiff impregnated textiles into the extrusion process. For this purpose, different textile-reinforced mortars (TRM) were extruded and their material characteristics were investigated. The results show that the mortar cross-section is considerably strengthened, especially when using carbon textiles, and that extrusion has considerable potential to produce high-performance TRM composites. In uniaxial tension tests with TRM, as well as in the pure roving tensile strength tests, textile stresses of approx. 1200 MPa were achieved for the glass textile and approx. 2250 MPa for the carbon textile. The position of the textile layer deviated a maximal 0.4 mm from its predesigned position, which shows its potential for producing tailor-made TRM elements. In addition, by adjusting the mortar mix design, it was possible to reduce the global warming potential (GWP) of the extrusion compound by up to 49.3% compared to the initial composition from preliminary studies. Composite materials reinforced with textile fabrics represent a complex subject. When explaining these materials, one must consider their mechanical behavior in general, and impact resistance in particular, as many applications are characterized by dynamic strains. Impact characteristics must be considered from the early stages of the design process in order to be controlled through structure, layer deposition and direction. Reinforcement materials are essential for the quality and behavior of composites, and textile reinforcements present a large range of advantages. It takes a good understanding of the requirements specific to an application to accurately design textile reinforcements. Currently, simulations of textile reinforcements and composites are efficient tools to forecast their behavior during both processing and use. The paper presents the steps that must be followed for modelling the impact behavior of composite materials, using finite element analysis (FEM). The FEM model built using Deform 3D software offers information concerning the behavior structure during impact. The behavior can be visualized for the structure as a whole and, for different sections, be considered significant. Furthermore, the structure's strain can be visualized at any moment. In real impact tests, this is not possible due to the very short time interval and the impossibility to record inside the structure, as well as to record all significant stages using conventional means. Wearable E-textile systems should be comfortable so that highest efficiency of their functionality can be achieved. The development of electronic textiles (functional textiles) as a wearable technology for various applications has intensified the use of flexible wearable functional textiles instead of wearable electronics. However, the wearable functional textiles still bring comfort complications during wear. The purpose of this review paper is to sightsee and recap recent developments in the field of functional textile comfort evaluation systems. For textile-based materials which have close contact to the skin, clothing comfort is a fundamental necessity. In this paper, the effects of functional finishing on the comfort of the textile material were reviewed. A brief review of clothing comfort evaluations for textile fabrics based on subjective and objective techniques was conducted. The reasons behind the necessity for sensory evaluation for smart and functional clothing have been presented. The existing works of literature on comfort evaluation techniques applied to functional fabrics have been reviewed. Statistical and soft computing/artificial intelligence presentations from selected fabric comfort studies were also reviewed. Challenges of smart textiles and its future highlighted. Some experimental results were presented to support the review. This article presents the results of tests on the resistance of new textile signal lines to bending and abrasion. The textile signal lines are one of the most important parts of the electronic system incorporated into modern smart garments. The main application of the lines presented in this article is the transmission of digital signals or high-frequency analogue signals. The tested lines were made of fabrics with sewn paths made of electro-conductive fabric. The construction of a measuring stand for testing the electric properties of textile transmission lines is shown. This article presents the effects of bending and abrasion on the resistance of electro-conductive strips, which are one of the elements of textile signal lines. The article also presents the effects of bending and abrasion on the characteristic impedance of constructed textile signal lines. Statistical analysis of the obtained results is also presented.
