Flexible paper-based materials play a crucial role in the field of flexible electromagnetic shielding due to their thinness and controllable shape. In this study, we employed the wet paper forming technique to prepare carbon fiber paper with a thickness gradient. The electromagnetic shielding performance of the carbon fiber paper varies with the ladder-like thickness distribution. Specifically, an increase in thickness gradient leads to higher reflectance of the carbon fiber paper. Within the X-band frequency range (8.2–12.4 GHz), reflectivity decreases as electromagnetic wave frequency increases, indicating enhanced penetration of electromagnetic waves into the interior of the carbon fiber paper. This enhancement is attributed to an increased fiber content per unit area resulting from a greater thickness gradient, which further enhances reflection loss and promotes internal multiple reflections and scattering effects, leading to increased absorption loss. Notably, at a 5 mm thickness, our carbon fiber paper exhibits an impressive average overall shielding performance, reaching 63.46 dB. The formation of a cellular hierarchically organized NiO film on a carbon paper substrate under hydrothermal conditions using triethanolamine as a base has been studied. The thermal behavior of the carbon paper substrate with the applied semi-product shell was studied using synchronous thermal analysis (TGA/DSC) and it was demonstrated that such modification of the material surface leads to a noticeable increase in its thermal stability. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was shown that the NiO film grown on the carbon fiber surface is characterized by a complex cellular morphology, organized by partially layered individual nanosheets of about 4–5 nm thickness and lateral dimensions up to 1–2 μm, some edges and folds of which are located vertically relative to the carbon fiber surface. The surface of the obtained material was also examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the electronic work function of the oxide shell surface was evaluated using the Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) method. The electrochemical parameters of the obtained flexible NiO/CP electrode were analyzed: the dependence of the specific capacitance on the current density was determined and the stability of the material during cycling was studied, which showed that the proposed approach is promising for manufacturing hierarchically organized electrodes for flexible supercapacitors. To study the friction and wear performance of carbon fiber reinforced friction materials under different working conditions, paper-based friction materials with different fibers were prepared. Experiments on the SAE#2 test bench were conducted to study the infectors including friction torques, surface temperature, coefficient of friction (COF), and surface morphologies. The results were analyzed, which indicated that the carbon fiber reinforced friction material could provide a higher friction torque and a lower temperature rising rate under the applied high pressure and high rotating speed conditions. As the pressure increased from 1 MPa to 2.5 MPa, the friction torque of plant fiber reinforced material increased by 150%, the friction torque of carbon fiber reinforced material increased by 400%, and the maximum temperature of plant fiber reinforced and carbon fiber reinforced material reached the highest value at 1.5 MPa. Thus, carbon fibers not only improved the COF and friction torque performance but also had advantages in avoiding thermal failure. Meanwhile, carbon fiber reinforced friction materials can provide a more stable COF as its variable coefficient (α) only rose from 38.18 to 264.62, from 1 MPa to 2.5 MPa, which was much lower than the natural fiber reinforced friction materials. Simultaneously, due to the good dispersion and excellent mechanical properties of PAN chopped carbon fibers, fewer pores formed on the initial surface, which improved the high wear resistance, especially in the intermedia disc. In order to design an optimal reinforcement of steel thin-walled beams with composite materials, it is worth analyzing two important, although often overlooked issues, which are the selection of the appropriate thickness of the adhesive layer and the effective anchoring length of the composite tape. This paper, which is part of a wider laboratory study devoted to the strengthening of thin-walled steel profiles, focuses on the second issue. The paper involves a description of laboratory four-point bending tests during which ten thin-walled steel beams made of a rectangular section with dimensions of 120 × 60 × 3 and a length of 3 m were tested. Two beams were taken as reference beams, and the other eight were reinforced using Sika CarboDur S512 carbon fiber composite tape, assuming four different effective anchorage lengths. The impact of the length of the anchoring of the composite tape on the value of the displacements and strains of the tested beams and on the value of the destructive load that caused tape detachment was analyzed. The following phase was numerical analyses carried out in the Abaqus program, which showed high consistency with the results of laboratory tests. In reference to the conducted tests, it was observed that the increase in the anchoring length of the composite tape has a slight impact on the change in the value of strains and displacements in the tested beams. Nevertheless, the increase in the effective anchorage length has a significant impact on the load value at which the composite tapes are detached from the surface of the steel thin-walled beam. This paper shows the three-point bending strength analysis of a composite material consisting of polyamide doped with chopped carbon fiber and reinforced with continuous carbon fiber produced by means of the material extrusion (MEX) additive manufacturing technique. For a comparison, two types of specimens were produced: unreinforced and continuous fiber-reinforced (CFR) with the use of carbon fiber. The specimens were fabricated in two orientations that assure the highest strength properties. Strength analysis was supplemented by additional digital image correlation (DIC) analysis that allowed for the identification of regions with maximum strain within the specimens. The utilization of an optical microscope enabled a fractographic examination of the fracture surfaces of the specimens. The results of this study demonstrated a beneficial effect of continuous carbon fiber reinforcement on both the stiffness and strength of the material, with an increase in flexural strength from 77.34 MPa for the unreinforced composite to 147.03 MPa for the composite reinforced with continuous carbon fiber. Despite the application of the Additive Manufacturing process and the ability of parts' construction directly from a 3D model, particular attention should be taken into account to improve their mechanical characteristics. In this paper, we present the effect of individual process variables and the strain-rate sensitivity of Onyx (Nylon mixed with chopped carbon fiber) manufactured by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), using both experimental and simulation manners. The main objective of this paper is to present the effect of the selected printing parameters (print speed and platform temperature) and the sensitivity of the 3D-printed specimen to the strain rate during tensile behavior. A strong variation of tensile behavior for each set of conditions has been observed during the quasi-static tensile test. The variation of 40 °C in the platform temperature results in a 10% and 11% increase in Young's modulus and tensile strength, and 8% decrease in the failure strain, respectively. The variation of 20 mm·s−1 in print speed results in a 14% increase in the tensile strength and 11% decrease in the failure strain. The individual effect of process variables is inevitable and affects the mechanical behavior of the 3D-printed composite, as observed from the SEM micrographs (ductile to brittle fracture). The best condition according to their tensile behavior was chosen to investigate the strain rate sensitivity of the printed specimens both experimentally and using Finite Element (FE) simulations. As observed, the strain rate clearly affects the failure mechanism and the predicted behavior using the FE simulation. Increase in the elongation speed from 1 mm·min−1 to 100 mm·min−1, results in a considerable increase in Young's modulus. SEM micrographs demonstrated that although the mechanical behavior of the material varied by increasing the strain rate, the failure mechanism altered from ductile to brittle failure. Considering the different structural strength requirements of different parts of fiberglass yachts, carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid reinforcement can be applied to the skins of sandwich panels in special areas. This paper designs and prepares 12 foam sandwich panel samples composed of pure carbon fiber, a carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid, pure glass fiber skin, and PVC and SAN foam sandwich, with reference to the layup structure of the outer panel of a fiberglass yacht. Through a comparative analysis of low-speed impact experiments, edge compression experiments, and short beam three-point bending experiments, we seek the optimal carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid layup design scheme for local structures to guide production. The results show that a reasonable hybrid carbon fiber layup in fiberglass skin can effectively reduce the low-speed impact damage of the sandwich structure, reduce edge compression damage, and improve the bending and compression resistance of sandwich structure. The impact resistance, compression resistance, and shear resistance of the SAN sandwich structure are stronger than the PVC sandwich structure. The carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid SAN foam sandwich structure can be used for the local structural reinforcement of special parts such as the bow, side, and main deck of fiberglass yachts. In this paper, water jet-guided laser (WJGL) drilling of C f / SiC composites was employed and the effects of the processing parameters on the depth and quality of the micro-holes were systematically investigated. Firstly, the depth measurement showed that the increase in processing time and power density led to a significant improvement in micro-hole drilling depth. However, the enhancement of the water jet speed resulted in a pronounced decrease in the depth due to the phenomenon of water splashing. In contrast, the scanning speed, path overlap ratio, pulse frequency, and helium pressure exhibited less effect on the micro-hole depth. Secondly, the microstructural analysis revealed that the increase in power density resulted in the deformation and fracture of the carbon fibers, while the augmentation in water jet speed reduced the thermal defects. Finally, based on the optimization of the processing parameters, a micro-hole of exceptional quality was achieved, with a depth-to-diameter ratio of 8.03 and a sidewall taper of 0.72°. Low fiber-direction compressive strength is a well-recognized weakness of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. When a CFRP is produced using 3D printing, the compressive strength is further degraded. To solve this issue, in this paper, a novel magnetic compaction force-assisted additive manufacturing (MCFA-AM) method is used to print CFRP laminates reinforced with carbon nanofiber (CNF) z-threads (i.e., ZT-CFRP). MCFA-AM utilizes a magnetic force to simultaneously levitate, deposit, and compact fast-curing CFRP prepregs in free space and quickly solidifies the CFRP laminate part without any mold nor supporting substrate plate; it effectively reduces the voids. The longitudinal compressive test was performed on five different sample types. ZT-CFRP/MCFA-AM samples were printed under two different magnetic compaction rolling pressures, i.e., 0.5 bar and 0.78 bar. Compared with the longitudinal compressive strength of a typical CFRP manufactured by the traditional out-of-autoclave–vacuum-bag-only (OOA-VBO) molding process at the steady-state pressure of 0.82 bar, the ZT-CFRP/MCFA-AM samples showed either comparable results (by −1.00% difference) or enhanced results (+7.42% improvement) by using 0.5 bar or 0.78 bar magnetic rolling pressures, respectively. The research presented in this article aimed to investigate the differences in mechanical properties between solid structural timber and the same reinforced element in three different ways. A three-point bending test was performed on wood elements reinforced with carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), 3D printed polycarbonate (3DPC) lamellas, and 3D printed polycarbonate with carbon fiber (3DPCCF) lamellas. In this comparison, the bending strength was large for CFRP samples, which have 8% higher performance than samples with 3DPCCF and 19% higher performance than samples with 3DPC. Conversely, when factoring in theoretical manufacturing costs, the performance of 3DPCCF is almost three times that of CFRP and 3DPC. In this paper, we report on the use of amorphous lignin, a waste by-product of the paper industry, for the production of high performance carbon fibers (CF) as precursor with improved thermal stability and thermo-mechanical properties. The precursor was prepared by blending of lignin with polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which was previously dissolved in an ionic liquid. The fibers thus produced offered very high thermal stability as compared with the fiber consisting of pure PAN. The molecular compatibility, miscibility, and thermal stability of the system were studied by means of shear rheological measurements. The achieved mechanical properties were found to be related to the temperature-dependent relaxation time (consistence parameter) of the spinning dope and the diffusion kinetics of the ionic liquids from the fibers into the coagulation bath. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical tests (DMA) were utilized to understand in-depth the thermal and the stabilization kinetics of the developed fibers and the impact of lignin on the stabilization process of the fibers. Low molecular weight lignin increased the thermally induced physical shrinkage, suggesting disturbing effects on the semi-crystalline domains of the PAN matrix, and suppressed the chemically induced shrinkage of the fibers. The production of concrete leads to substantial carbon emissions (~8%) and includes reinforcing steel which is prone to corrosion and durability issues. Carbon-fiber-reinforced concrete is attractive for structural applications due to its light weight, high modulus, high strength, low density, and resistance to environmental degradation. Recycled/repurposed carbon fiber (rCF) is a promising alternative to traditional steel-fiber reinforcement for manufacturing lightweight and high-strength concrete. Additionally, rCF offers a sustainable, economical, and less energy-intensive solution for infrastructure applications. In this paper, structure–process–property relationships between the rheology of mix design, carbon fiber reinforcement type, thermal conductivity, and microstructural properties are investigated targeting strength and lighter weight using three types of concretes, namely, high-strength concrete, structural lightweight concrete, and ultra-lightweight concrete. The concrete mix designs were evaluated non-destructively using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography to investigate the microstructure of the voids and spatially correlate the porosity with the thermal conductivity properties and mechanical performance. Reinforced concrete structures with steel often suffer from durability issues due to corrosion. This paper presents advancements towards realizing concrete structures without steel reinforcement by providing required compression, adequate tension, flexural, and shear properties from recycled/repurposed carbon fibers and substantially reducing the carbon footprint for thermal and/or structural applications. Optimization of structural elements via composition of different components is a significant scientific and practical point-of-view problem aimed at obtaining more economical and environmentally friendly solutions. This paper presents the results of a static work analysis of small-size laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams reinforced by a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheet. The nominal dimensions of LVL beams were 45 × 45 × 850 mm, and 0.333- and 0.666-mm thick reinforcement layers were used. The reinforcement was applied on opposite sides of the cross section obtaining a sandwich-type structure. An epoxy resin was used as a bonding layer. The bending tests were conducted in the so-called four-point bending static scheme in edgewise and flatwise conditions. The results of experimental tests confirmed the validity of this combination of materials. The highest load-bearing capacity was obtained for configuration, where CFRP sheets with a thickness of 0.666 mm were placed on the sides of the core, parallel to the direction of loading and the veneer's grain in the core. The increase in this case was up to a maximum of 57% compared to the core alone. The highest bending stiffness increase, 182% compared to the core alone, involves placing two layers of sheets perpendicular to the direction of loading, i.e., on the upper and lower surfaces. The presented novel sandwich structure can be competitive against traditional steel and reinforced concrete elements in civil engineering and can be utilized as beams or slabs. Polymer concrete has proved to be advantageous in machine building for many years thanks to its excellent damping properties. Until now, its use was limited to machine beds due to its comparatively low tensile strength. Its use in moving structural components has not been possible until now. Recent research results have shown that this challenge can be met by integrating prestressed carbon fibers. Until now, the production of samples out of prestressed fiber-reinforced polymer concrete has been carried out according to fixed specifications. It is not yet clear whether these specifications are suitable to fully exploit the potential of the material. Samples manufactured to these specifications show at least a large scatter in bending stiffness. Within the scope of this paper, the existing manufacturing process is validated by the variation of process steps. Specifically, this involved the use of a shaker, variation of the dwell time in the mold, variation of the resin content, and the procedure for impregnating the fibers. The characterization of the samples showed that the scatter could only be reduced by increasing the dwell time. However, this leads to a decrease in bending stiffness and, thus, is not suitable for further improvement of the novel material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on the effect of nano-silica on an epoxy matrix of hybrid basalt-carbon fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) composites. Usage of this type of bar continues to grow in the construction industry. The corrosion resistance, strength parameters, and easy transport to the construction site are significant parameters compared to traditional reinforcement. The research for new and more efficient solutions resulted in the intensive development of FRP composites. In this paper, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of two types of bars is proposed: hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (HFRP) and nanohybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (NHFRP). HFRP, in which 25% of the basalt fibers were replaced with carbon fibers, is more mechanically efficient than basalt fiber reinforced polymer composite (BFRP) alone. In HFRP, epoxy resin was additionally modified with a 3% SiO2 nanosilica admixture. Adding nanosilica to the polymer matrix can raise the glass transition temperature (Tg) and thus shift the limit beyond which the strength parameters of the composite deteriorate. SEM micrographs evaluate the surface of the modified resin and fiber–matrix interface. The analysis of the previously conducted tests—shear and tensile at elevated temperatures—correlate with the microstructural SEM observations with the obtained mechanical parameters. High-quality milling of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites is of great importance for the high-performance manufacturing of structures made of this hard-to-machine material. In this paper, a multiscale finite element (FE) model, considering the thermal–mechanical coupling effect, was developed to simulate the milling process and reveal its material removal mechanism. The corresponding milling experiments were conducted to validate the simulated cutting forces and temperature, which were in good agreement with the experiment results. In the macroscale model, the Hashin failure criteria were used to estimate the failure of the composites. In the microscale model, the fibers, matrix, and the fiber–matrix interface were modeled separately, to investigate the mechanisms of material removal behavior during milling, among fiber breakage, matrix cracking, and fiber–matrix debonding. Based on the macroscale numerical and experimental results, the higher cutting speed was demonstrated to improve the surface quality of CFRP milling. According to the results from the microscale model, the material removal mechanism varies depending on the orientation of the fibers and can be divided into four stages. The outcome of this work provides guidelines to further investigate optimal manufacturing parameters for the milling of CFRP composites and their cutting mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, in order to upcycle carbon fibers (CF), the changes in their mechanical and chemical properties in accordance with time and temperature were investigated, in addition to the oxygen functional group mechanism. When acetone as a chemical desizing agent was used, treatment with acetone for 0.5 h at 60 °C was the optimal condition for the complete removal of the sizing agent, and there was no deterioration in tensile strength. At 25 °C, the carbonyl group (C=O) and hydroxyl group (C-O) declined in comparison to commercial CF, but a novel lactone group (O=C-O) was created. At 60 °C, the oxygen present in the sizing agent was removed and C=O, C-O, and O=C-O decreased. On the contrary, in the case of thermal desizing in an inert gas nitrogen atmosphere, by increasing the temperature, functional groups combining carbon and oxygen were reduced, because nitrogen and oxygen atoms combined with C=O and C-O on the CF surface were eliminated in the form of CO, NO, CO2, NO2, and O2. When desizing via chemical and thermal methods, the amount of functional groups combining carbon and oxygen on the CF surface decreased. Desizing was performed as a pretreatment for surface treatment, so the methods and conditions were different, and related research is insufficient. In this study, we attempted to derive the optimal conditions for desizing treatment by identifying the surface characteristics and mechanisms according to chemical and thermal desizing treatment methods. The roller is an important part of the belt conveyor used in coal transportation. Due to the harsh environment of coal mines, the rollers are in a state of high load and high friction for a long time, which causes wear failure and has a serious impact on the reliability and safety of the equipment. In order to prepare roller material with excellent bearing performance and friction performance, CF/PUE composites were prepared by pouring method with polyurethane as the matrix and carbon fiber as reinforcement. Due to the low surface activity of unmodified carbon fibers and poor bonding performance with the matrix, MoS2 was generated on the surface of carbon fiber by the in situ generation method in this paper. It was found that the mechanical properties of MoS2/CF/PUE composites were better when the CF content was 0.3 wt%. The Shore hardness reached 92.2 HA, which is 10% higher than pure polyurethane. The tensile strength was 38.44 MPa, which is 53% higher than pure polyurethane. The elongation at break was 850%, which is 16% higher than pure polyurethane. The maximum compressive stress was 2.32 MPa, which is 42% higher than pure polyurethane. The friction coefficient was much lower than that of pure PUE composites, the friction coefficient was 0.284, which is 59% lower than pure polyurethane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The engineering applications and related researches of 3D printing fiber-reinforced geopolymers are becoming more and more extensive. However, compared with traditional mould-casted cement-based materials, the properties of 3D-printed fiber-reinforced geopolymers are significantly different, and their interlayer bonding and anisotropy effects are less studied, so in-depth analysis and summary are needed. Similar to common cement-based materials, the reinforcement fibers for geopolymers include not only traditional fibers, such as steel fibers and carbon fibers, but also synthetic polymer fibers and natural polymer fibers. These fibers have unique properties, most of which have good mechanical properties and bonding properties with geopolymers, as well as excellent crack resistance and enhancement. This paper summarizes and analyzes the effects of traditional fibers, polymer fibers, plant fibers and other reinforcement fibers on the properties of 3D-printed fiber-reinforced geopolymers, especially on the interlayer bonding and anisotropy. The influence of the flow and thixotropic properties of fiber-reinforced fresh geopolymer on the weak bond and anisotropy between layers is summarized and analyzed. At the same time, the influence of fibers on the compressive strength, flexural strength and interlayer binding strength of the hardened geopolymers is investigated. The effect of fibers on the anisotropy of 3D-printed geopolymers and the methods to improve the interlayer binding degree are summarized. The limitations of 3D printing fiber-reinforced geopolymers are pointed out and some suggestions for improvement are put forward. Finally, the research on 3D printing fiber-reinforced geopolymers is summarized. This paper provides a reference for further improving the interlayer bonding strength of 3D-printed fiber-reinforced geopolymers. Currently, the mechanical performances of polylactic acid (PLA) samples prepared using the fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique are relatively poor. Hence, the carbon fiber (CF) is used to improve the thermal stability and mechanical property of FFF-ed PLA samples in this paper. The crystalline structure, thermal stability, melt flow rate, tensile strength and fractured surface morphology of PLA and PLA/CF samples were investigated with an X-ray diffraction device, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analyzer, melt flow rate equipment, universal tensile test machine and scanning electron microscope, respectively. Meanwhile, the reinforcement mechanism of CF on the mechanical property of PLA samples was also analyzed. XRD results revealed that the diffraction peaks intensities of PLA/CF sample were obviously lower than those of PLA sample. TGA and DSC curves illustrated that the initial thermal decomposition temperature, thermal stability and crystallinity of the PLA/CF sample improved significantly. The tensile strength of the PLA/CF sample was 91.58 MPa, which was 42.49% higher than that of the PLA sample. Moreover, SEM images showed that the fractured behavior of the PLA sample varied from brittle fracture to ductile fracture after the introduction of CF. This paper presents the results of experimental testing of the bending strength and modulus of elasticity in edgewise bending of unreinforced and reinforced seven-layer LVL (laminated veneer lumber) poplar veneer panels. The aim of the research is to determine the influence of woven carbon fibers on the improvement of the bending properties and modulus of elasticity of LVL bending in the plane of the plate, as well as the influence of adhesives on the bending properties of the composite product, in order to test the potential of using this newly obtained material as a structural element. Bending was performed on small-scale samples. The main research task is the examination of three types of reinforcement, which differ from each other in position, orientation, and number of layers of reinforcement, using two different types of adhesives: epoxy adhesive and Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resins (MUF). The composite material was produced in four different combinations in relation to the orientation and position of the reinforcement in the layup. The applied reinforcement is defined through three different configurations (EK1, EK2, and EK3) and a fourth control sample (EK4). Each configuration was produced by applying the two previously mentioned types of adhesives. The research findings showed that in the case of samples produced by applying CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) using epoxy adhesive, it significantly affected the increase in bending strength and flexural modulus of elasticity. The average improvement in bending strength is 32.9%, 33.2%, and 38.7%, i.e., the flexural modulus of elasticity is 54.1%, 50.7%, and 54.7%, respectively, for configurations EK1, EK2, and EK3, compared to control sample EK4. During the testing, the test samples from reinforced panels EK1 and EK2 showed partly plastic behavior up to the fracture point, while the diagram for the test samples from reinforced panels EK3 shows elastic behavior to a considerable extent, with a significantly smaller plastic behavior zone. This research proved the impossibility of using melamine-urea formaldehyde adhesive to form a composite product based on veneer and carbon fabric. The present study deals with the harmful torsional resonance vibrations of textile rotor bearings, the amplitudes of which are reduced mainly by the use of high-capacity damping materials, characterized by an internal hierarchical structure and macroshape, added into the machine mechanical system. The additional materials are polymer matrix composites reinforced either by carbon nanofibers or carbon chopped microfibers and either aramid or carbon continuous fibers. The macroshape is based on a honeycomb with internal cavities. Torsional vibrations arise in mechanical systems as a result of fluctuations in the low-level pressing load of the flat belt driving the rotor-bearing pin and the changing of kinematic conditions within it, which, in the resonance area, leads to cage slip and unwanted impulsive torsional vibrations. Moreover, this occurs during high-frequency performance at around 2100 Hz, i.e., 126,000 min−1. The condition, before the redesign, was characterized by significantly reduced textile rotor-bearing life due to significant impulse torsional vibrations in the resonance area. The study showed a significant reduction in average and maximum torsional amplitudes in the resonance area by 33% and 43%, respectively. Furthermore, the paper provides visualization of the propagation of a stress wave at the microscale obtained by the explicit finite element method to show the dispersion of the wave and the fibers as one of the sources of high damping. Under the strategies of low-carbon and environmental protection, promoting green technology innovation to achieve carbon neutrality in the construction field has become a universal goal. As the building material with the highest consumption, concrete has gradually begun to transform into a multi-functional and intelligent product. Therefore, the research on carbon fiber-reinforced cement-based composites (CFRCs) is of relative interest. It mainly uses carbon fibers (CFs) with high elasticity, strength, and conductivity to disperse evenly into the concrete as a functional filler, to achieve the intelligent integration of concrete structures and function innovatively. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of CFRC is not only related to the content of CFs and environmental factors but also largely depends on the uniform dispersion and the interfacial bonding strength of CFs in cement paste. This work systematically presents a review of the current research status of the enhancement and modification mechanism of CFRC and the evaluation methods of CF dispersion. Moreover, it further discusses the improvement effects of different strengthening mechanisms on the mechanical properties, durability, and smart properties (thermoelectric effect, electrothermal effect, strain-sensitive effect) of CFRC, as well as the application feasibility of CFRC in structural real-time health monitoring, thermal energy harvesting, intelligent deformation adjustment, and other fields. Furthermore, this paper summarizes the problems and challenges faced in the efficient and large-scale applications of CFRCs in civil engineering structures, and accordingly promotes some proposals for future research. Additive manufacturing has revolutionised the field of manufacturing, allowing for the production of complex geometries with high precision and accuracy. One of the most promising applications of additive manufacturing is in the production of composites, which are materials made by combining two or more substances with different properties to achieve specific functional characteristics. In recent years, the use of Continuous Filament Fabrication (CFF) in additive manufacturing has become increasingly popular due to its ability to produce high-quality composite parts which have fibres with a complex orientation and high curvature. This paper aims to investigate the influence of fill pattern and stacking sequence on the open-hole tensile strength of composites manufactured using CFF and made of an innovative matrix composed of nylon and short carbon fibres, i.e., Onyx, and with continuous carbon fibre as reinforcement. By systematically varying the fill pattern and stacking sequence, we aim to identify the optimal combination that can achieve the highest open-hole tensile strength in these composites. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into the design and manufacture of high-strength composites using additive manufacturing. Open-hole strength and elastic properties are strongly influenced by the infill strategy and stacking sequences adopted, and show different failure modes. This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the influence of pre-existing impact damage on the low-velocity impact response of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). A continuum damage mechanics-based material model was developed by defining a user-defined material model in Abaqus/Explicit. The model employed the action plane strength of Puck for the damage initiation criterion together with a strain-based progressive damage model. Initial finite element simulations at the single-element level demonstrated the validity and capability of the damage model. More complex models were used to simulate tensile specimens, coupon specimens, and skin panels subjected to low-velocity impacts, being validated against experimental data at each stage. The effect of non-central impact location showed higher impact peak forces and bigger damage areas for impacts closer to panel boundaries. The presence of pre-existing damage close to the impact region leading to interfering delamination areas produced severe changes in the mechanical response, lowering the impact resistance on the panel for the second impact, while for non-interfering impacts, the results of the second impact were similar to the impact of a pristine specimen. Curing processes for carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composites via microwave heating are promising alternatives to conventional thermal curing because this technology results in nonhomogeneous temperature distributions, which hinder its further development in industries. This paper proposes a novel method for improving heating homogeneities by employing three-dimensional motion with respect to the prepreg laminate used in the microwave field by using a recently developed microwave system. The maximum temperature deviation on the surface of the laminate can be controlled within 8.7 °C during the entire curing process, and it produces an average heating rate of 1.42 °C/min. The FT−IR analyses indicate that microwave heating would slightly influence hydroxyl and methylene contents in the cured laminate. The DMA measurements demonstrate that the glass transition temperatures can be improved by applying proper microwave-curing processes. Optical microscopy and mechanical tests reveal that curing the prepreg laminate by using a multistep curing process that initially cures the laminate at the resin's lowest viscosity for 10 min followed by curing the laminate at a high temperature for a short period of time would be favorable for yielding a sample with low void contents and the desired mechanical properties. All these analyses are supposed to prove the feasibility of controlling the temperature difference during microwave-curing processes within a reasonable range and provide a cured laminate with improved properties compared with conventional thermally cured products. This paper investigates the flexural behavior of preloaded reinforced concrete (RC) beams, strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plates using an experimental program, analytical procedure, and Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation. The RC beams were subjected to preloads of 30%, 50% and 70% of the yielding load, prior to installation of the strengthening system. The eight RC-strengthened beams with a reinforcement configuration of 3Ø12 and two CarboDur S512 plates have been evaluated using bending tests. The failure modes of all the RC-strengthened beams were governed by the widening of flexural cracks within a constant bending zone, followed by debonding of the CFRP plates. The plates were debonding simultaneously or one plate prior to the other plate. The ultimate moment capacity is not significantly reduced while increasing preload levels from 0% to 70%. The moment capacity is increased by 70% to 80% in the CFRP strengthened beams, compared with un-strengthened beams indicating the potential of capacity enhancement that can be attained by externally bonded CFRP. The aluminum alloy drill pipe suffers long-term high-temperature conditions during ultra-deep well drilling. In this paper, the samples were prepared by vacuum hot pressing, followed by hot extrusion and T6 heat treatment. The mechanical properties of short carbon fiber reinforced 2024 aluminum alloy composites (SCFs/2024 Al) and the microstructure evolution at the interface region thermal exposure at 160 °C for 500 h are discussed. The experimental results showed that the effect of short carbon fiber on 2024 aluminum alloy remained steady throughout the whole process of the heat exposure experiment. The distribution and volume of interface products (Al4C3) changed with the prolonging of heat exposure time, and connected after coarsening. The evolution of the morphology of Al4C3 relieved the stress of the interface between carbon fiber and aluminum alloy matrix and enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite. Composite materials based on magnesium–lithium (MgLi) and magnesium–yttrium (MgY) matrices reinforced with unidirectional carbon fibers were prepared using the gas pressure infiltration method. Two types of carbon fibers were used, high-strength PAN-based T300 fibers and high-modulus pitch-based Granoc fibers. The PAN-based carbon fibers have an internal turbostratic structure composed of crystallites. The pitch-based carbon fibers have a longitudinally aligned graphite crystal structure. The internal carbon fiber structure is crucial in the context of the interfacial reaction with the alloying element. There are various mechanisms of bonding to carbon fibers in the case of magnesium–lithium and magnesium–yttrium alloys. This paper presents the use of the DMA method for the characterization of the role of alloying elements in the quality of interfacial bonding and the influence on the complex modulus at increasingly elevated temperatures (50–250 °C). The complex modulus values of the composites with T300 fibers were in the range of 118–136 GPa. The complex modulus values of the composites with Granoc fibers were in the range of 198–236 GPa. (1) Background: The paper addresses the effect of carbon fibers (CFs) treatment by low-temperature plasma with runaway electrons on the deformation behavior of the polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-layered composites. (2) Methods: The effect of the interlayer adhesion on the mechanical response of the composites was assessed through the tensile and three-point bending tests. In addition, computer simulations of the three-point bending were carried out with the use of the finite element analysis (FEM) with varying conditions at the "PEEK–CF layers" interface. (3) Results: DRE–plasma treatment during the optimal time of t = 15 min led to formation of a rougher surface and partial desizing of a finishing agent. The shear strength of the layered composites increased by 54%, while the tensile strength and the flexural modulus (at three-point bending) increased by 16% (up to 893 MPa) and by 10% (up to 93 GPa), respectively. (4) Conclusions: The results of the numerical experiments showed that the increase in the stiffness, on the one hand, gave rise to enlarging the flexural modulus; on the other hand, a nonlinear decrease in the strength may occur. For this reason, the intention to maximize the level of the interlayer stiffness can result in lowering the fracture toughness, for example, at manufacturing high-strength composites. Auxetic materials are those that exhibit negative Poisson's ratios. Such a unique property was shown to improve the indentation and impact resistances. Angle-ply composite laminates can be designed to produce negative Poisson's ratio at the laminate level due to the large anisotropicity of the individual layer and the strain mismatch between adjacent layers. This paper investigates the effect of through-thickness negative Poisson's ratio on the low velocity impact behaviors of carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite laminates, including the global impact behaviors, as well as the delamination, and the fiber and matrix damage. Results from numerical investigations show consistently reduced fiber and matrix tensile damage in the auxetic laminate in all plies, in comparison to the non-auxetic counterpart laminates (up to 40% on average). Neurotransmitters (NTs) with hydroxyl groups can now be identified electrochemically, utilizing a variety of electrodes and voltammetric techniques. In particular, in monoamine, the position of the hydroxyl groups might alter the sensing properties of a certain neurotransmitter. Numerous research studies using electrodes modified on their surfaces to better detect specific neurotransmitters when other interfering factors are present are reviewed to improve the precision of these measures. An investigation of the monoamine neurotransmitters at nanoscale using electrochemical methods is the primary goal of this review article. It will be used to determine which sort of electrode is ideal for this purpose. The use of carbon materials, such as graphite carbon fiber, carbon fiber micro-electrodes, glassy carbon, and 3D printed electrodes are only some of the electrodes with surface modifications that can be utilized for this purpose. Due to the advantages of high specific strength, specific stiffness, and excellent fatigue resistance, carbon fiber reinforced braided composites have been widely applied in engineering. Since the molding process of braided composites is complex and immature, substantial variability of the internal geometry exists in composites, in which the yarn path with uncertainty is a main factor, so it is necessary to establish an uncertainty model to study the influence of randomness of the yarn path on mechanical properties, which is significantly related to the fatigue resistance properties of composite. An uncertain mesoscopic model with uniform distribution of yarn paths is proposed. Assuming the yarn path is spatially varying in interval range, the variability of yarn path is represented geometrically in the unit cell of composite. The three-dimensional coordinates of the yarn trajectory are calculated, the meso-uncertainty models of 2-D and 2.5-D braided composites are established. The equivalent elastic parameters and the thermal expansion coefficients are obtained by applying homogenization method and temperature field boundary conditions to the mesoscopic model. The effect of yarn path uncertainty on the statistical characteristics of elastic and thermal parameters of braided composites was studied by using Monte-Carlo simulation. A simulation method for modeling yarn path uncertainty of braided composites is provided in this paper for predicting the statistical characteristics of the equivalent elastic and thermal parameters. With carbon fiber, it is difficult to load semiconductor photocatalysts and easy to shed off thanks to its smooth surface and few active groups, which has always been a problem in the synthesis of photocatalysts. In the study, SrTiO3 nanoparticles were loaded onto the Tencel fibers using the solvothermal method, and then the Tencel fibers were carbonized at a high temperature under the condition of inert gas to form carbon fibers, thus SrTiO3@CF photocatalytic composite materials with solid core shell structure were prepared. Meanwhile, Mn ions were added into the SrTiO3 precursor reagent in the solvothermal experiment to prepare Mn-doped Mn-SrTiO3@CF photocatalytic composite material. XPS and EPR tests showed that the prepared Mn-SrTiO3@CF photocatalytic composite was rich in oxygen vacancies. The existence of these oxygen vacancies formed oxygen defect states (VOs) below the conduction band, which constituted the capture center of photogenerated electrons and significantly improved the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic hydrogen experimental results showed that the photocatalytic hydrogen production capacity of Mn-SrTiO3@CF composite material with 5% Mn-doped was six times that of the SrTiO3@CF material, and the doping of Mn ions not only promoted the red shift of the light absorption boundary and the extension to visible light, but also improved the separation and migration efficiency of photocarriers. In the paper, the preparation method solves the difficulty of loading photocatalysts on CF and provides a new design method for the recycling of catalysts, and we improve the hydrogen production performance of photocatalysts by Mn-doped modification and the introduction of oxygen vacancies, which provides a theoretical method for the practical application of hydrogen energy. Nowadays, FRCM systems are increasingly used for the strengthening and retrofitting of existing masonry and reinforced concrete structures. Their effectiveness strongly depends on the bond that develops at the interface between multifilament yarns, which constitute the reinforcing fabric, and the inorganic matrix. It is well known that fabric yarns, especially when constituted by dry carbon fibers, have poor chemical-physical compatibility with inorganic matrices. For this reason, many efforts are being concentrated on trying to improve the interface compatibility by using different surface treatments on multifilament yarns. In this paper, three different surface treatments have been considered. The first two involve yarn pre-impregnation with flexible epoxy resin or nano-silica coating, while the third one involves a fiber oxidation process. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out on single carbon yarns to evaluate tensile strength, elastic modulus and ultimate strain before and after surface treatments, and also after yarn exposure to accelerated artificial aging conditions (1000 h in saline or alkaline solutions at 40 °C), to evaluate their long-term behavior in aggressive environments. Pull-out tests on single carbon yarns embedded in a cementitious mortar were also carried out, under normal environmental conditions and after artificial exposure. Epoxy proved to be the most effective treatment, by increasing the yarn tensile strength of 34% and the pull-out load of 138%, followed by nano-silica (+9%; +40%). Extrusion-based ceramic printing is fast and convenient, but the green body strength is too low, and the application prospect is not high. An extrusion-based printing method of alumina ceramics toughened by short carbon fiber is reported in this paper. The bending strength and fracture toughness of 3D-printed alumina ceramics were improved by adding short carbon fiber. The toughening effects of four carbon fiber lengths (100 μm, 300 μm, 700 μm, and 1000 μm) and six carbon fiber contents (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 wt%) on ceramics were compared. The experimental results show that when the length of carbon fiber is 700 μm, and carbon fiber is 5 wt%, the toughening effect of fiber is the best, and the uniform distribution of fiber is an effective toughening method. Its bending strength reaches 33.426 ± 1.027 MPa, and its fracture toughness reaches 4.53 ± 0.46 MPa·m1/2. The explosive growth of the global market for Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and the lack of a closing loop strategy of composite waste have raised environmental concerns. Circular economy studies, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC), have investigated composite recycling and new bio-based materials to substitute both carbon fibers and matrices. However, few studies have addressed composite repair. Studies focused on bio-based composites coupled with recycling and repairing are also lacking. Within this framework, the paper aims at presenting opportunities and challenges of the new thermosetting composite developed at the laboratory including the criteria of repairing, recycling, and use of bio-based materials in industrial applications through an ex ante LCA coupled with LCC. Implementing the three criteria mentioned above would reduce the environmental impact from 50% to 86% compared to the baseline scenario with the highest benefits obtained by implementing the only repairing. LCC results indicate that manufacturing and repairing parts built from bio-based CFRP is economically sustainable. However, recycling can only be economically sustainable under a specific condition. Managerial strategies are proposed to mitigate the uncertainties of the recycling business. This paper presents a new textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) installation method for strengthening structurally deficient or damaged reinforced concrete (RC) structures with grouting. In this study, cementitious grout was used as a matrix for the TRC system. TRC coupon specimens with different lap-splice lengths were tested under tension to determine the minimum textile lap-splice length. The minimum lap-splice length of the sand-coated textile was evaluated as 150 mm. The performance of the TRC-strengthened RC slabs with the proposed installation method. The lap-spliced textile was experimentally validated by a flexural failure test. Five RC slabs were strengthened by one ply of sand-coated carbon textile grid with and without the lap-splicing and 20 mm-thick cementitious grout and were tested in flexure. Among the TRC-strengthened RC slab specimens, two specimens were re-strengthened RC slabs with the TRC system. The TRC strengthened slab, for which the lap-splice length of the textile was 50% smaller than the minimum lap-splice length, failed at the load level of steel yield. On the other hand, the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the RC slabs strengthened by the TRC system with textile lap-splicing decreased by at least 6% relative to that without textile lap-splicing. Furthermore, the results of a flexural test for the TRC re-strengthened slabs indicate that the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the TRC re-strengthened slabs is almost the same as that of an undamaged slab strengthened with the TRC system. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model for anti-symmetric cylindrical shell in the bionic gripper structure. Here, the response surface method is used to establish multiple surrogate models of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell, and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is used to optimize the design space of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell; the design points of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell are verified by experimental methods. The optimization goals are that the first steady state transition load (the transition process of the bionic gripper structure from the open state to the closed state) of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell is minimized, and the second steady state transition load (the transition process of the bionic gripper structure from the closed state to the open state) is the largest. At the same time, in order to prevent stable instability caused by stress concentration in the second steady state of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell, the maximum principal plane stress is given as the constraint condition. The validity of the optimization results is verified by finite element and experimental methods. Due to the stable transition load of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell being significantly larger than that of the orthogonal laminated plate, therefore, the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell has potential application prospects in the application of deformable structures and bionic structures that require composite functions such as having light weight, high strength, and large clamping force. This study introduces an innovative wedge anchor for double-layer carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate cable to address the current limitation of traditional wedge anchors. By employing the design concept of "secondary force transmission path", the friction force for anchoring the CFRP plate is effectively transferred into the barrel through its contracting wedge, thus reducing the clamping pressure requirement of traditional wedge anchorage for anchoring thick or double-layer CFRP plates. Based on this conception, this study presents a theoretical analysis model for predicting the influence of parameter variations on the compressive stress of the CFRP plate, which can serve as a tool for rapid configuration preliminary design. Through finite element analysis, the internal stress distribution of the anchor is thoroughly investigated, and the theoretical analysis model for fast predicting compressive stress of CFRP plate is also validated. Surfactant-based wet spinning is a promising route toward the eco-friendly production of carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs). However, currently, the properties of surfactant-based wet-spun CNTFs lag behind those produced by other methods, indicating the need for further understanding and research. Here, we explored the surface characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are advantageous for the properties of CNTFs produced by wet spinning, using sodium cholate as a surfactant. Our finding indicates that appropriate thermal oxidation of CNTs enhances the fiber properties, while excessive oxidation undermines them. This implies that the bonding mechanism between CNTs and sodium cholate involves hydrophobic interaction and π-π interaction. Therefore, it is crucial to preserve a clean surface of CNTs in wet spinning using sodium cholate. In this study, a one-pot aryl diazonium reaction was used as a simple and mild method to graft graphene onto the smooth and inert surface of T1100-grade carbon fiber (CF) through covalent bonding without any damage on CF, to refine the interface performance of CF/bismaleimide (BMI) composites. XPS, SEM, AFM, and dynamic contact angle testing (DCAT) were used to characterize chemical activity, morphologies, and wettability on untreated and grafted CF surfaces. Meanwhile, the impact of the graft method on the tensile strength of CF was also examined using the monofilament tensile test. IFSS between CF grafted with graphene and BMI resin achieved 104.2 MPa after modification, increasing from 85.5 MPa by 21.8%, while the tensile strength did not decrease compared to the pristine CF. The mechanism of this interface enhancement might be better chemical bonding and mechanical interlock between CF grafted with graphene and BMI resin, which is generated from the high surface chemical activity and rough structure of graphene. This study may propose a simple and mild method to functionalize the CF surface and enhance the interface performance of composites without compromising the tensile properties of T1100-grade CF. This article introduces an eco-friendly method for the reclamation of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP). The research project involved numerous experiments using microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) to explore a range of factors, such as the inert gas flow, the power level, the On/Off frequency of rotation, and the reaction duration. To design the experiments, the three-level Box–Behnken optimization tool was employed. To determine the individual and combined effects of the input parameters on the thermal decomposition of the resin, the data were analyzed using least-squares variance adjustment. The results demonstrate that the models developed in this study were successful in predicting the direct parameters of influence in the microwave-assisted decomposition of CFRPs. An optimal set of operating conditions was found to be the maximum nitrogen flow (2.9 L/min) and the maximum operating experimental power (914 W). In addition, it was observed that the reactor vessel's On/Off rotation frequency and that increasing the reaction time beyond 6 min had no significant influence on the resin elimination percentage when compared to the two other parameters, i.e., power and carrier gas flow rate. Consequently, the above-mentioned conditions resulted in a maximum resin elimination percentage of 79.6%. Following successful MAP, various post-pyrolysis treatments were employed. These included mechanical abrasion using quartz sand, chemical dissolution, thermal oxidative treatment using a microwave (MW) applicator and thermal oxidative treatment in a conventional furnace. Among these post-treatment techniques, thermal oxidation and chemical dissolution were found to be the most efficient methods, eliminating 100% of the carbon black content on the surface of the recovered carbon fibers. Finally, SEM evaluations and XPS analysis were conducted to compare the surface morphology and elementary constitution of the recovered carbon fibers with virgin carbon fibers. Despite the advantages of using lightweight and non-corrosive carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcements in concrete structures, their widespread adoption has been limited due to concerns regarding the brittle failure of CFRP rupture and its relatively softer load-deflection stiffness. This work offers logical solutions to these two crucial problems: using aggregate coating to strengthen the CFRP-concrete bond and ultimately the load-deflection stiffness, and using CFRP-concrete debonding propagation to create pseudo-ductile behavior. Subsequently, the concrete cracking behavior, the apparent CFRP modulus with aggregates, and the post-peak capacity and deflection of three-dimensional (3D) CFRP-reinforced concrete are all described by equations derived from experiments. These formulas will be helpful in the future design of non-prismatic concrete components for low-impact building projects. The potential of this innovative design scheme in terms of increased capacity and deflections with less concrete material is demonstrated through comparisons between non-prismatic CFRP-reinforced concrete and measured steel reinforced equivalency. The main motivation for this research was to improve the properties of geopolymers by reinforcement using synthetic and natural fibers, and to gain new knowledge regarding how the nature and/or the quantity of reinforcement fibers influences the properties of the final geopolymers. The main objective was to investigate the effects of different types of reinforcement fibers on the properties of the geopolymers. These reinforcement fibers were mainly environmentally friendly materials that can be used as alternatives to ordinary Portland cement. The authors used fly ash and river sand as the raw materials for the matrix, and added carbon fibers (CF), flax fibers (FF), or a hybrid of both (CFM) as reinforcements. The samples were prepared by mixing, casting, and curing, and then subjected to various tests. The main research methods used were compressive strength (CS), flexural strength (FS), water absorption (WA), abrasion resistance (Böhme's disk method), microstructure analysis (SEM), chemical composition (XRF), and crystal structure analysis (XRD). The results showed that the addition of fibers partially improved the mechanical properties of the geopolymers, as well as reducing microcracks. The CF-reinforced geopolymers exhibited the highest compressive strength, while the FF-reinforced geopolymers showed the lowest water absorption. Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyimide (PI) resin composites have gained significant attention in the field of continuous-fiber-reinforced polymers, in which the interfacial bonding between carbon fiber and matrix resin has been an important research direction. This study designed and prepared a water-soluble thermoplastic polyamide acid sizing agent to improve the wettability of carbon fiber, enhance the van der Waals forces between carbon fiber and resin and strengthen the chemical bonding between the sizing agent and the alkyne-capped polyimide resin by introducing alkyne-containing functional groups into the sizing agent. This study found that the addition of a sizing layer effectively bridged the large modulus difference between the fiber and resin regions, resulting in the formation of an interfacial layer approximately 85 nm thick. This layer facilitated the transfer of stress from the matrix to the reinforced carbon fiber, leading to a significant improvement in the interfacial properties of the composites. Adjusting the concentration of the sizing agent showed that composites treated with 3% had the best interfacial properties. The interfacial shear strength increased from 82.08 MPa to 108.62 MPa (32.33%) compared to unsized carbon fiber. In many cases, there is a need to reinforce the existing, sometimes very old, cast iron columns. The paper describes a proposed and completed reinforcement procedure using an external, thin coating (sleeve or jacket) made of composite (carbon fiber reinforced polymer—CFRP). The strengthening effect was verified in destructive tests performed on two original columns (without reinforcement) and two other, identical columns strengthened by means of the proposed technique. Due to the expected very high load capacity of the axially loaded column, the test rig was designed to allow the application of the force on a big eccentricity. For this purpose a special base was designed and fabricated. Destructive tests have confirmed the high effectiveness of the adopted strengthening technique. The main objective of the present paper is a numerical confirmation of experimental results. All material parameters required in the numerical model were determined in laboratory tests. Simulation was performed using the finite element method—based on two systems, COSMOS/M and Simulia Abaqus. Numerical models were validated on results of the analytical assessment of stresses presented in the paper as well. Results of numerical simulations made on nonlinear models were compared with the experimental results. The paper proposed a method to improve the anti-oxidation performance of carbon fibers (CF) at high temperature environment by coating silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon carbide (SiC). The modified sol-gel method had been used to ensure the proper interface between fibers and coating. We used polydimethylsiloxane and ethyl orthosilicate to make stable emulsion to uniformly disperse SiC nanoparticles. The modified SiO2/SiC coating had been coated on CF successfully. Compared with the untreated CF, the coated fibers started to be oxidized around 900 °C and the residual weight was 57% at 1400 °C. The oxidation mechanism had been discussed. The structure of SiC/SiO2 coated CF had been characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis. The emergence of additive manufacturing technologies for fiber-reinforced thermoset composites has greatly bolstered their utilization, particularly within the aerospace industry. However, the ability to precisely measure the interface strength between the fiber and thermoset matrix in additively manufactured composites has been constrained by the cumbersome nature of single-fiber pull-out experiments and the need for costly instrumentation. This study aims to introduce a novel methodology for conducting single-fiber pull-out tests aimed at quantifying interface shear strength in additively manufactured thermoset composites. Our findings substantiate the viability of this approach, showcasing successful fiber embedding within composite test specimens and precise characterization of fiber pull-out strength using a conventional mechanical testing system. The test outcome revealed an average interfacial strength value of 2.4 MPa between carbon fiber and the thermoset epoxy matrix, aligning with similar studies in the existing literature. Carbon fiber laminates have become popular in the manufacturing industry for their many desirable properties, like good vibration damping, high strength-to-weight ratio, toughness, high dimensional stability, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. During the manufacturing process, undesirable foreign objects, such as peel-ply strips, gloving material, and Kapton film, can be introduced into the part which can lead to a localized weakness. These manufacturing defects can function as stress concentration points and oftentimes cause a premature catastrophic failure. In this study, a method using high-resolution pulse-echo ultrasound testing is employed for the detection and quantification of the dimensions of foreign object debris (FOD) embedded within carbon fiber laminates. This research presents a method to create high-resolution C-scans using an out of immersion tank portable housing ultrasound scanning system, with similar capabilities to that of a full immersion system. From the full-waveform dataset, we extract the FOD depth and planar dimensions with an automatic edge detection technique. Results from several carbon fiber laminates are investigated with embedded foreign objects that are often considered undetectable. Results are presented for FOD identification for two different shapes: circles with diameters ranging from 7.62 mm to 12.7 mm, and 3-4-5 triangles with hypotenuses ranging from 7.6 mm to 12.7 mm. CT imaging is used to confirm proper FOD placement and that the FOD was not damaged or altered during manufacturing. Of importance for the ultrasound inspection results, in every single case studied, the FOD is detected, the layer depth is properly identified, and the typical error is less than 1.5 mm for the primary dimension.
