The use of zinc (Zn) alloys as a biodegradable metal for medical purposes has been a popular research topic. This study investigated the strengthening mechanism of Zn alloys to enhance their mechanical properties. Three Zn-0.45Li (wt.%) alloys with different deformation amounts were prepared by rotary forging deformation. Their mechanical properties and microstructures were tested. A simultaneous increase in strength and ductility was observed in the Zn-0.45Li alloys. Grain refinement occurred when the rotary forging deformation reached 75.7%. The surface average grain size reached 1.19 ± 0.31 μm, and the grain size was uniformly distributed. Meanwhile, the maximum elongation of the deformed Zn-0.45Li was 139.2 ± 18.6%, and the ultimate tensile strength reached 426.1 ± 4.7 MPa. In situ tensile tests showed that the reinforced alloys still broke from the grain boundary. Continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization during severe plastic deformation produced many recrystallized grains. During deformation, the dislocation density of the alloy first increased and then decreased, and the texture strength of the (0001) direction increased with deformation. Analysis of the mechanism of alloy strengthening showed that the strength and plasticity enhancement of Zn-Li alloys after macro deformation was a combination of dislocation strengthening, weave strengthening, and grain refinement rather than only fine-grain strengthening as observed in conventional macro-deformed Zn alloys. Magnesium alloys are attractive candidates for use as temporary fixation devices in osteosynthesis because they have a density and Young's modulus similar to those of cortical bone. One of the main requirements for biodegradable implants is its substitution by tissues during the healing process. In this article, the Mg–Zn–Ga–(Y) alloys were investigated that potentially can increase the bone growth rate by release of Ga ions during the degradation process. Previously, the effectiveness of Ga ions on bone tissue regeneration has been proved by clinical tests. This work is the first systematic study on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–Zn–Y alloys containing Ga as an additional major alloying element prepared by the hot-extrusion process. The microstructure and phase composition of the Mg–Zn–Ga–(Y) alloys in as-cast, heat-treated, and extruded conditions were analyzed. In addition, it was shown that the use of hot extrusion produces Mg–Zn–Ga–(Y) alloys with favorable mechanical properties. The tensile yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation at fracture of the MgZn4Ga4 alloy extruded at 150 °C were 256 MPa, 343 MPa, and 14.2%, respectively. Mg alloys have mechanical properties similar to those of human bones, and have been studied extensively because of their potential use in biodegradable medical implants. In this study, the influence of different heat treatment regimens on the microstructure and mechanical and corrosion properties of biodegradable Mg–Zn–Ga alloys was investigated, because Ga is effective in the treatment of disorders associated with accelerated bone loss. Solid–solution heat treatment (SSHT) enhanced the mechanical properties of these alloys, and a low corrosion rate in Hanks' solution was achieved because of the decrease in the cathodic-phase content after SSHT. Thus, the Mg–4 wt.% Zn–4 wt.% Ga–0.5 wt.% Y alloy after 18 h of SSHT at 350 °C (ultimate tensile strength: 207 MPa; yield strength: 97 MPa; elongation at fracture: 7.5%; corrosion rate: 0.27 mm/year) was recommended for low-loaded orthopedic implants. Zinc-based alloys represent one of the most highly developed areas regarding biodegradable materials. Despite this, some general deficiencies such as cytotoxicity and poor mechanical properties (especially elongation), are not properly solved. In this work, a Zn-5Mg (5 wt.% Mg) composite material with tailored mechanical and superior corrosion properties is prepared by powder metallurgy techniques. Pure Zn and Mg are mixed and subsequently compacted by extrusion at 200 °C and an extrusion ratio of 10. The final product possesses appropriate mechanical properties (tensile yield strength = 148 MPa, ultimate tensile strength = 183 MPa, and elongation = 16%) and decreased by four times the release of Zn in the initial stage of degradation compared to pure Zn, which can highly decrease cytotoxicity effects and therefore positively affect the initial stage of the healing process. Hydroxyapatite and bioactive glass particles were added to pure magnesium and an AZ91 magnesium alloy and then consolidated into disc-shaped samples at room temperature using high-pressure torsion (HPT). The bioactive particles appeared well-dispersed in the metal matrix after multiple turns of HPT. Full consolidation was attained using pure magnesium, but the center of the AZ91 disc failed to fully consolidate even after 50 turns. The magnesium-hydroxyapatite composite displayed an ultimate tensile strength above 150 MPa, high cell viability, and a decreasing rate of corrosion during immersion in Hank's solution. The composites produced with bioactive glass particles exhibited the formation of calcium phosphate after 2 h of immersion in Hank's solution and there was rapid corrosion in these materials. Powder sintering at 1200 °C for 180 min was used to produce Fe–Mn based alloys with tensile properties and an elastic modulus suitable for biodegradable implant applications. The effect of the addition of manganese on the microstructure, tensile properties and fracture behaviour of the Fe–Mn alloys was investigated. The Fe–35Mn alloy with a microstructure dominated by the Austenite phase showed the best set of tensile properties, including ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus, suitable for orthopaedic implant applications. The fracture surface of the Fe–35Mn alloy showed signs of complex multimode fracture behaviour, consisting of interconnected pores and large segments with signs of ductile fracture, including the presence of dimples as well as micro-voids. The microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of hot–rolled Mg–xSn–1Zn–0.5Ca (x = 1, 3 and 5 wt.%) alloys were investigated for possible application as biodegradable implants. The hot–rolled Mg–xSn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloys consisted of α-Mg matrix and Mg2Sn phase. The number of the Mg2Sn particles significantly increased and the grains were gradually refined (14.2 ± 1.5, ~10.7 ± 0.7 and ~6.6 ± 1.1 μm), while the recrystallized fraction significantly decreased with the increase in the Sn content, the Mg–1Sn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloy was almost completely recrystallized. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and tensile yield strength (TYS) increased slightly, reaching maximum values of 247 MPa and 116 MPa, respectively, for the Mg–5Sn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloy, and the elongation decreased with the increase in the Sn content; the Mg–1Sn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloy showed the highest elongation (15.3%). In addition, immersion tests and electrochemical measurements in Hank's solution revealed that the corrosion rates of Mg–xSn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloys increased with the increase in the Sn content. A model of the corrosion behavior was discussed for hot–rolled Mg–xSn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloys in Hank's solution. Among the Mg–xSn–1Zn–0.5Ca (x = 1, 3 and 5 wt.%) alloys, Mg–1Sn–1Zn–0.5Ca alloy exhibits optimal corrosion resistance and appropriate mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
