The main goal of the paper is to calculate the heat conductivity for three experimental hemp–lime composites used for structural construction purposes with the use of the experimental stand inside two compartments. Due to current construction trends, we are constantly searching for eco-friendly materials that have a low carbon footprint. This is the case of the analyzed material, and additional thermographic heat distribution inside the material during a fire resistance test proves that it is also a perfect insulation material, which could be applied in addition of popular isolating materials. This paper presents the results of certain hemp–lime composite studies and the potential for using hemp–lime composite for the structural construction industry. Hemp–lime composite heat transfer coefficient, fire resistance, and bulk density properties are compared to those of other commonly used construction materials. The obtained results show that the material together with supporting beams made of other biodegradable materials can be the perfect alternative for other commonly used construction materials. The development of novel biocompatible and biodegradable materials for medical applications has been drawing significant interest in the scientific community for years. Particularly, chitosan loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has a strong antimicrobial potential and could be applied, for example, as wound dressing material. In this work, chitosan/Ag NP composites were produced utilizing a single-step plasma-solution process, which is simple and environmentally friendly. An acetic solution of chitosan containing AgNO3 was treated by the direct current (DC) atmospheric pressure glow discharge, with the liquid serving as either cathode or anode. The plasma-solution system with liquid anode is more useful for the production of Ag NPs. Nevertheless, the NP size is comparable for both cases. The plasma treatment with both polarities led to chitosan degradation. The cleavage of glucosidic chains mostly occurred in the system with the liquid cathode, whereas the side oxidation reactions took place when the solution served as the anode. The oxidation processes were possibly induced by the hydrogen peroxide H2O2 efficiently formed in the last case. The composite materials produced with both polarities of liquid electrode demonstrated the bactericidal action against Gram-negative Escherichia coli, Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis. Zinc-based alloys represent one of the most highly developed areas regarding biodegradable materials. Despite this, some general deficiencies such as cytotoxicity and poor mechanical properties (especially elongation), are not properly solved. In this work, a Zn-5Mg (5 wt.% Mg) composite material with tailored mechanical and superior corrosion properties is prepared by powder metallurgy techniques. Pure Zn and Mg are mixed and subsequently compacted by extrusion at 200 °C and an extrusion ratio of 10. The final product possesses appropriate mechanical properties (tensile yield strength = 148 MPa, ultimate tensile strength = 183 MPa, and elongation = 16%) and decreased by four times the release of Zn in the initial stage of degradation compared to pure Zn, which can highly decrease cytotoxicity effects and therefore positively affect the initial stage of the healing process. In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAp) coated Mg matrix composites were fabricated for biodegradable implant applications. Spark plasma sintering was employed to fabricate the Mg-10 wt% ZnO composite substrates. HAp was coated on the surface of the sintered composites and pure Mg by a chemical solution treatment. SEM and optical micrographs of coated samples showed that HAp grew homogeneously and formed a layer on the entire surface of both pure sintered Mg and Mg composites. The immersion and polarization test results demonstrated that the HAp coating significantly improved the corrosion resistance of the sintered composites. While the HAp coating layer is not effective in the improvement of the pure Mg substrate, cell culture test results revealed that the HAp coating improved cell adhesion and proliferation on the composites effectively through 72 h, while no cell could survive on the uncoated composites after 72 h. In addition, the corrosion tests and cell culture test results indicated that the composite with longer sintering time has better corrosion resistance and cell viability than those of the composite with shorter sintering time. The findings suggested that the HAp-coated Mg-10 wt% ZnO-2.5 h + 10 min composite is a high-potential candidate for biodegradable implant applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
