Material innovation plays a very important role in technological progress and industrial development. Traditional experimental exploration and numerical simulation often require considerable time and resources. A new approach is urgently needed to accelerate the discovery and exploration of new materials. Machine learning can greatly reduce computational costs, shorten the development cycle, and improve computational accuracy. It has become one of the most promising research approaches in the process of novel material screening and material property prediction. In recent years, machine learning has been widely used in many fields of research, such as superconductivity, thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, catalysis, and high-entropy alloys. In this review, the basic principles of machine learning are briefly outlined. Several commonly used algorithms in machine learning models and their primary applications are then introduced. The research progress of machine learning in predicting material properties and guiding material synthesis is discussed. Due to a growing number of environmental issues, including global warming, water scarcity, and fossil fuel depletion, the topic of modern materials in energy is becoming crucial for our civilization. The technological advancements that have been observed bring many innovations that significantly impact how energy can be generated, stored, and distributed. Moreover, new opportunities have emerged in energy and materials engineering due to the increasing computational capability of current data processing systems. Methods that are highly demanding, time-consuming, and difficult to apply may now be considered when developing complete and sophisticated models in many areas of science and technology. Combining computational methods and AI algorithms allows for multi-threaded analyses solving advanced and interdisciplinary problems. Therefore, knowledge and experience in this subject, as well as the investigation of new, more efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions, currently represent one of the main directions of scientific research. Zirconia-based materials are widely used in dentistry due to their biocompatibility and suitable mechanical and tribological behavior. Although commonly processed by subtractive manufacturing (SM), alternative techniques are being explored to reduce material waste, energy consumption and production time. 3D printing has received increasing interest for this purpose. This systematic review intends to gather information on the state of the art of additive manufacturing (AM) of zirconia-based materials for dental applications. As far as the authors know, this is the first time that a comparative analysis of these materials' properties has been performed. It was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to select studies that met the defined criteria without restrictions on publication year. Stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) were the techniques most focused on in the literature and the ones that led to most promising outcomes. However, other techniques, such as robocasting (RC) and material jetting (MJ), have also led to good results. In all cases, the main concerns are centered on dimensional accuracy, resolution, and insufficient mechanical strength of the pieces. Despite the struggles inherent to the different 3D printing techniques, the commitment to adapt materials, procedures and workflows to these digital technologies is remarkable. Various designs of furnaces for melting alloys are used in the foundry industry. Regardless of their design, they have one common detail, which is the lining of their interiors with refractory materials. This component in the design of a metal-melting furnace has a very important task—to protect the rest of the furnace assemblies from thermal and mechanical damage. Continuous technical progress and the quality requirements of casting production produce increasingly higher demands for refractory materials in connection with their development as well. The article presents the results of an innovative method of vibratory compaction of refractory material (high-alumina aluminosilicate) using reduced pressure. The analysis presents a comparative study of two methods used for forming refractory materials, i.e., the application of the mentioned innovative method and the classical (standard) method of compaction by vibration only. The effects of the introduced modification in the manufacture of ceramic shapes were evaluated by means of the material's resistance to thermal shock, linear expansion, and dimensional change due to firing, apparent density, open porosity, and apparent specific gravity, determination of total pore volume and pore size distribution by mercury porosimetry, and slag resistance. The tests performed indicate that the procedure of lowering the pressure during the vibratory compaction of the refractory material creates a more homogeneous structure with a smaller number and size of pores. This makes it possible to improve most of the parameters that determine the quality of the refractories used for the linings of the foundry furnace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of nano-based technologies in endodontics for the identification and treatment of various dental infections is showing fast progress. Studies show that nanoparticles could serve as useful agents with many beneficial results and continue to be promising in the field of endodontics. To ensure progress and improvements on novel nanomaterials in relation to their physicochemical and biological properties, nano-identification methods for the detection and evaluation of diseases need to be further highlighted. This study aims to review the current technological progress and recent research outcomes as well as possible prospective applications of nano-based technologies in endodontics. A comprehensive literature survey has been carried out on the utilizations of nanomaterials and nano-characterization techniques in endodontics. The current status and recent applications in endodontics are discussed with illustrative examples. The results have shown that the progress and improved accuracy of nano-identification techniques enabled a better characterization, evaluation and selection of appropriate treatment plans for endodontics-related diseases. The results have been inspiring for further clinical investigations. Nano-endodontics is still a developing field with a strong potential for revolutions of novel materials and techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases. Further improvements in nanoparticles properties will pave the way for the development of many beneficial endodontic therapeutic agents. Topology optimization holds great potential to achieve the best performance for various fluid-related applications like aircraft components and microfluidic mixers. This paper reviews comprehensively the technical progress of this field over the last decade from the viewpoint of structural expression. The density-based approach has been widely adopted to design structures due to its simple concept, ease of implementation, and robustness. Different designs using such a pointwise method for systems under Stokes, laminar Navier–Stokes, turbulent, non-Newtonian, and steady-state/unsteady-state fluid flows are reviewed and discussed in depth. Both isogeometric analysis and the moving morphable components/voids methods will demonstrate their advantages regarding integration with computer-aided design. The moving morphable components/voids method also significantly reduces computing costs. From the viewpoint of boundary smoothness, we are most concerned about whether smoother boundaries can reduce objective functions such as energy dissipation even lower. Therefore, this work also concentrates on level set and spline expression methods. Furthermore, we identify isogeometric analysis and machine learning in shaping the field's future. In addition, the review highlights the following two challenges: achieving accurate fluid model construction and the relatively limited experimental validation of fluid topology optimization outcomes. The rapid technological progress of large-scale CNC (computer numerical control) systems for Screw Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (SEAM) has made the overprinting of composite laminates a much-discussed topic. It offers the potential to efficiently produce functionalised high-performance structures. However, bonding the 3D-printed structure to the laminate has proven to be a critical point. In particular, the bonding mechanisms must be precisely understood and controlled to ensure in situ bonding. This work investigates the applicability of healing models from 3D printing to the overprinting of thermoplastic laminates using semi-crystalline, high-performance material like PEEK (polyether ether ketone). For this purpose, a simulation methodology for predicting the bonding behaviour is developed and tested using experimental data from a previous study. The simulation consists of a transient heat analysis and a diffusion healing model. Using this model, a qualitative prediction of the bond strength could be made by considering the influence of wetting. It was shown that the thermal history of the interface and, in particular, the tolerance of the deposition of the first layer are decisive for in situ bonding. As a result of continuing scientific and technological progress, electromagnetic waves have become increasingly pervasive across a variety of domains, particularly within the microwave frequency range. These waves have found extensive applications in wireless communications, high-frequency electronic circuits, and several related fields. As a result, absorptive materials have become indispensable for dual-use applications across both the military and civilian domains because of their exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption properties. This paper, beginning with the operating mechanisms of absorptive materials, aims to provide an overview of the strategies that have been used to enhance the absorption performance of iron-based magnetic absorbers (IBMAs) and discuss the current research status of absorptive material components. The fabrication of a ferromagnetic absorber in terms of morphology, heterointerface coupling, and macrostructural enhancements and the effect of powder characteristics on their electromagnetic properties are discussed. Additionally, the application of IBMAs in elastomers is summarized. Finally, this paper summarizes the limitations of existing ferromagnetic absorber materials and offers a perspective on their potential future developments. The objective of the ongoing research is to fabricate absorptive components that have thin profiles, lightweight construction, wide absorption frequency ranges, and strong absorption capabilities. Technological progress in masonry structures has resulted in the creation of competitive solutions, which force the need for an ever deeper recognition of this type of structure. Masonry is a composite with heterogeneous strength properties. Therefore, the most appropriate way to accurately describe the behavior of the masonry structure under the influence of the working load are experimental research and their statistical and probabilistic analysis. This article presents a series of experimental tests carried out on real masonry structures. The results of the experiments were subjected to static evaluation, determining the most important parameter in the probabilistic analysis—the coefficient of variability of strength. The variability obtained in the experimental studies was used to determine the safety of the structure in the probabilistic method. Achieved values of coefficients of variation and safety coefficients proved to be satisfactory and adequate to the emerging technological progress in the production and embedding of masonry components. Continuous technological progress places significant demands on the materials used in increasingly modern devices. An important parameter is often the long-term thermal resistance of the material. The use of heat-resistant polymer materials worked well in technologically advanced products. An economically justified direction in searching for new materials is the area of polymer nanocomposite materials. It is necessary to appropriately select both the polymer matrix and the nanofillers best able to demonstrate the synergistic effect. A promising area of exploration for such nanocomposites is the use of organosilicon polymers, which results from the unique properties of these polymers related to their structure. This review presents the results of the analysis of the most important literature reports regarding organosilicon polymer nanocomposites with increased thermal resistance. Particular attention was paid to modification methods of silicone nanocomposites, focusing on increasing their thermal resistance related to the modification of siloxane molecular structure and by making nanocomposites using inorganic additives and carbon nanomaterials. Attention was also paid to such important issues as the influence of the dispersion of additives in the polymer matrix on the thermal resistance of silicone nanocomposites and the possibility of modifying the polymer matrix and permanently introducing nanofillers thanks to the presence of various reactive groups. More and more electrically conducting materials are required to sustain the technological progress of civilization. Faced with the performance limits of classical materials, the R&D community has put efforts into developing nanomaterials, which can offer sufficiently high operational parameters. In this work, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were doped with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to create such material. The results show that it is most fruitful to combine these components at the synthesis stage of an SWCNT network from their dispersion. In this case, the electrical conductivity of the material is boosted from 249 ± 21 S/cm to 1301 ± 56 S/cm straightforwardly and effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, high-ductility concrete (HDC) has gradually become popular in the construction industry because of its excellent ductility and crack resistance. Concrete itself is a kind of building material with poor tensile properties, and it is necessary to add a large number of steel bars to improve its tensile properties, which increases the construction cost of buildings. However, most of the research studies on high-ductility concrete are scattered. In this paper, the basic mechanical properties of high-ductility concrete and the effects of dry and wet cycles, freeze–thaw cycles, and salt erosion on the durability of high-ductility concrete are obtained by comprehensive analysis. The results show that the tensile properties of HDC can be significantly improved by adding appropriate fiber. When the volume fraction of steel fiber is 2.0%, the splitting tensile strength of concrete is increased by 98.3%. The crack width threshold of concrete chloride erosion is 55–80 μm, and when the crack width threshold is exceeded, the diffusion of CL-1 will be accelerated, and the HDC can control the crack within the threshold, thereby improving the durability of the concrete. The exploration of Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal energy is essential to fulfill the energy demands of the increasing population. Investigating the physical and mechanical properties of heated rock under different cooling methods has significant implications for the exploitation of HDR. In this study, ultrasonic testing, uniaxial strength compression experiments, Brazilian splitting tests, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted on heated granite after different cooling methods, including cooling in air, cooling in water, cooling in liquid nitrogen, and cycle cooling in liquid nitrogen. The results demonstrated that the density, P-wave velocity (Vp), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (σt), and elastic modulus (E) of heated granite tend to decrease as the cooling rate increases. Notably, heated granite subjected to cyclic liquid nitrogen cooling exhibits a more pronounced decline in physical and mechanical properties and a higher degree of damage. Furthermore, the cooling treatments also lead to an increase in rock pore size and porosity. At a faster cooling rate, the fracture surfaces of the granite transition from smooth to rough, suggesting enhanced fracture propagation and complexity. In the last twenty years, nanofabrication progress has allowed for the emergence of a new photodetector family, generally called low-dimensional solids (LDSs), among which the most important are two-dimensional (2D) materials, perovskites, and nanowires/quantum dots. They operate in a wide wavelength range from ultraviolet to far-infrared. Current research indicates remarkable advances in increasing the performance of this new generation of photodetectors. The published performance at room temperature is even better than reported for typical photodetectors. Several articles demonstrate detectivity outperforming physical boundaries driven by background radiation and signal fluctuations. This study attempts to explain these peculiarities. In order to achieve this goal, we first clarify the fundamental differences in the photoelectric effects of the new generation of photodetectors compared to the standard designs dominating the commercial market. Photodetectors made of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), quantum dots, topological insulators, and perovskites are mainly considered. Their performance is compared with the fundamental limits estimated by the signal fluctuation limit (in the ultraviolet region) and the background radiation limit (in the infrared region). In the latter case, Law 19 dedicated to HgCdTe photodiodes is used as a standard reference benchmark. The causes for the performance overestimate of the different types of LDS detectors are also explained. Finally, an attempt is made to determine their place in the global market in the long term. With the booming of renewable clean energies towards reducing carbon emission, demands for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in applications to transportation vehicles and power stations are increasing exponentially. As a consequence, great pressures have been posed on the technological development and production of valuable elements key to LIBs, in addition to concerns about depletion of natural resources, environmental impacts, and management of waste batteries. In this paper, we compile recent information on lithium, nickel, and cobalt, the three most crucial elements utilized in LIBs, in terms of demands, current identified terrestrial resources, extraction technologies from primary natural resources and waste. Most nickel and cobalt are currently produced from high-grade sulfide ores via a pyrometallurgical approach. Increased demands have stimulated production of Ni and Co from low-grade laterites, which is commonly performed through the hydrometallurgical process. Most lithium exists in brines and is extracted via evaporation–precipitation in common industrial practice. It is noteworthy that at present, the pyrometallurgical process is energy-intensive and polluting in terms of gas emissions. Hydrometallurgical processes utilize large amounts of alkaline or acidic media in combination with reducing agents, generating hazardous waste streams. Traditional evaporation–precipitation consumes time, water, and land. Extraction of these elements from deep seas and recycling from waste are emerging as technologies. Advanced energy-saving and environmentally friendly processes are under extensive research and development and are crucial in the process of renewable clean energy implementation. Keratin waste, including keratin powder, is a significant byproduct of the poultry processing and meat industries. It is a major contributor to waste management problems due to its volume and the environmental pollutants that it can produce. The disposal of keratin waste is challenging due to the potential for odors and pathogens to enter the soil and water. The aim of this work is to present the possibility of using waste materials in accordance with the principles of upcycling and producing fully valuable products. In this research, the author focuses on the production and research of textile multilayer laminates using keratin flour that had been previously considered waste material. New textile composites should be characterized by increased thermal insulation properties with constant comfort in use. This research determines the physiological comfort interpreted as the state of the human–laminate system, which maintains the conditions of comfort in human perception, i.e., constant temperature and humidity of the body under changing conditions of a relative humidity environment. A key component of this process is the automated production of high-performance construction mixtures that meet specific requirements for strength, fluidity, and setting speed. This overview article outlines the history and development of 3D printing technology in the construction industry, describes various printing technologies, and discusses the properties and requirements for construction mixes. Special attention is given to automated systems for batching and mixing ingredients, which increase the precision and efficiency of production. The different types of construction mixes used in 3D printing and the main technical and operational challenges associated with their application are also presented. The article's conclusions highlight the potential of this technology to revolutionize the construction industry by improving efficiency and reducing costs and project lead times. Bismuth-based compounds have been regarded as a kind of promising material due to their narrow bandgap, high carrier mobility, low toxicity, and strong oxidation ability, showing potential applications in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) activities. They can be applied in sustainable energy production, seawater desalination and treatment, optical detection and communication, and other fields. As a member of the broader family of bismuth-based materials, β-Bi2O3 exhibits significant advantages for applications in engineering, including high photoelectric response, stability in harsh environments, and excellent corrosion resistance. This paper presents the synthesis of β-Bi2O3 thin films utilizing the mist chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method at the optimal temperature of 400 °C. Based on the β-Bi2O3 thin film synthesized at optimal temperature, a PEC-type photodetector was constructed with the highest responsivity R of 2.84 mA/W and detectivity D of 6.01 × 1010 Jones, respectively. The photodetection performance was investigated from various points like illumination light wavelength, power density, and long-term stability. Bio-inspired hydrogel robots have become promising due to their advantage of the interaction safety and comfort between robots and humans, while current hydrogel robots mainly focus on underwater movement due to the hydration–dehydration process of thermo-responsive hydrogels, which greatly limits their practical applications. To expand the motion of the thermo-responsive hydrogel robot to the ground, we constructed a hydrogel robot inspired by a caterpillar, which has an anisotropic double-layered structure by the interfacial diffusion polymerization method. Adding PVA and SA to PNIPAm will cause different conformation transitions. Therefore, sticking the two layers of hydrogel together will form a double-layer anisotropic structure. The ultra-high hydrophilicity of PVA and SA significantly reduces the contact angle of the hydrogel from 53.1° to about 10° and reduces its hydration time. The responsive time for bending 30° of the hydrogel robot has been greatly reduced from 1 h to half an hour through the enhancement of photo-thermal conversion and thermal conductivity via the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. As a result, the fabricated hydrogel robot can achieve a high moving speed of 54.5 mm·h−1 on the ground. Additionally, the fabricated hydrogel has excellent mechanical strength and can endure significant flexibility tests. The present investigation addresses the mechanical properties, wear behaviour, and high-temperature oxidation of cermets and hardmetals based on either Ti(C,N) or WC and a metal binder based on Fe15Ni or Fe15Ni10Cr. This study also includes a commercial-grade WC-Co for comparative purposes. The production of these materials involved a powder metallurgy and sinter-HIP processing route under identical conditions. It is found that WC-based materials have superior mechanical properties, including hardness, fracture toughness, transversal rupture strength (TRS), and wear response, compared to Ti(C,N)-based materials. However, the latter show better oxidation behaviour than the former. Notably, WC-FeNi exhibits a higher hardness and TRS than the commercial-grade material (an increase of 7% and 9%, respectively). The difference in wear behaviour is due to the difference in wear mechanisms. In this regard, cermets wear through a tribolayer of Ti and Fe oxides, while hardmetals primarily wear through abrasion from ploughing. Thus, hardmetals exhibit a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate than cermets. Furthermore, Ti(C,N)-based materials form a protective layer of TiO2, which enhances their integrity and reduces mass gain. Due to their remarkable intrinsic physical properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can enhance mechanical properties and confer electrical and thermal conductivity to polymers currently being investigated for use in advanced applications based on thermal management. An epoxy resin filled with varying concentrations of CNTs (up to 3 wt%) was produced and experimentally characterized. The electrical percolation curve identified the following two critical filler concentrations: 0.5 wt%, which is near the electrical percolation threshold (EPT) and suitable for exploring mechanical and piezoresistive properties, and 3 wt% for investigating thermo-electric properties due to the Joule effect with applied voltages ranging from 70 V to 200 V. Near the electrical percolation threshold (EPT), the CNT concentration in epoxy composites forms a sparse, sensitive network ideal for deformation sensing due to significant changes in electrical resistance under strain. Above the EPT, a denser CNT network enhances electrical and thermal conductivity, making it suitable for Joule heating applications. Numerical models were developed using multiphysics simulation software. Once the models have been validated with experimental data, as a perfect agreement is found between numerical and experimental results, a simulation study is performed to investigate additional physical properties of the composites. Furthermore, a statistical approach based on the design of experiments (DoE) was employed to examine the influence of certain thermal parameters on the final performance of the materials. The purpose of this research is to promote the use of contemporary statistical and computational techniques alongside experimental methods to enhance understanding of materials science. Building formwork is a kind of temporary supporting structure consumable material used in the construction field. In recent years, building formwork has gradually developed to become lighter, more environmentally friendly, and have higher performance. This sets higher requirements for the materials used to make building formwork. There is an urgent need to find a lighter and more durable material for building formwork. Magnesium alloys possess the advantages of low density, high alkali resistance, and high strength. As a building formwork material, it can reduce the weight of formwork and improve its durability. Therefore, a magnesium alloy is considered a material with high potential for building formwork. Currently, magnesium alloy building formwork has attracted the attention of many companies and research and development institutions, with preliminary research applications and good feedback on usage effects. It is highly possible to obtain the opportunity to put it into market application. However, to be applied on a large scale, there are still some important problems that need to be solved. These problems fall into three main areas, including the relatively low processing efficiency of magnesium alloy materials, the unstable price of magnesium alloys, and the fact that the formwork is easily corroded during storage. Firstly, at present, the main processing methods for magnesium alloy building formwork are casting and extrusion, and the production efficiency of both methods needs to be improved. Secondly, high-performance magnesium alloy materials are usually more expensive, which is not conducive to the large-scale application of the formwork. The price of magnesium alloys has fluctuated greatly in recent years, which increases the difficulty of promoting magnesium alloy building formwork. Thirdly, in the atmosphere, the oxide film on the surface of the magnesium alloy cannot play an effective role in corrosion resistance. So, surface treatment is necessary for magnesium alloy building formwork. Among the various surface treatment methods for magnesium alloys, the chemical conversion method has the advantages of being easy to operate, cost-effective, and having good corrosion resistance. It may be a very suitable protective method for large-scale applications of magnesium alloy building formwork and possesses excellent potential for application. The future of magnesium alloy building formwork will focus on new low-cost materials, high-efficiency processing technology, and low-cost green anti-corrosion technology. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in computational methods for modeling, simulation, and optimization of complex systems in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and energy systems. We identified key trends and highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with traditional computational methods. The article discusses the phenomena and destructive mechanisms occurring on the surface of 1.2344 steel dies used during the hot forging of disc-type forgings. Preliminary research has shown that gas nitriding alone, used so far, is insufficient due to the occurrence of destructive mechanisms other than abrasive wear, such as thermal and thermomechanical fatigue, which cause the average durability of such tools to be approximately 5000 forgings. Analyses were also carried out to assess the load on forging tools using numerical modeling (Forge 3.0NxT), which confirmed the occurrence of large and cyclically changing thermal and mechanical loads during the forging process. Therefore, in order to increase operational durability, it was decided to use two types of hybrid layers, differing in the PVD coating used: TiCrAlN and CrN, and then subjected to gas nitriding (GN). The obtained results showed that, depending on the area of the tool and the current working conditions, the applied PVD coatings protect the surface layer of the tool against the dominant destructive mechanisms. In both cases, the strength increased to the level of 7000 forgings, the tools could continue to work, and globally, slightly better results were obtained for the GN+TiCrAlN layer. The CrN-type layer protects the tool more against thermal fatigue, while the TiCrAlN layer is more resistant to abrasive wear. In areas where the hybrid layer was worn, a decrease in hardness was observed from 1300 HV to 600–700 HV, and in places of intense material flow (front—point 2 and tool bridge—point 9) the hardness dropped to below 400 HV, which may indicate local tempering of the material. Moreover, the research has shown that each process and tool should be analyzed individually, and the areas in the tool where particular destructive mechanisms dominate should be identified, so as to further protect the forging tool by using appropriate protective coatings in these areas. This review focuses on recent advances in concrete durability using graphene oxide (GO) as a nanomaterial additive, with a goal to fill the gap between concrete technology, chemical interactions, and concrete durability, whilst providing insights for the adaptation of GO as an additive in concrete construction. An overview of concrete durability applications, key durability failure mechanisms of concrete, transportation mechanisms, chemical reactions involved in compromising durability, and the chemical alterations within a concrete system are discussed to understand how they impact the overall durability of concrete. The existing literature on the durability and chemical resistance of GO-reinforced concrete and mortar was reviewed and summarized. The impacts of nano-additives on the durability of concrete and its mechanisms are thoroughly discussed, particularly focusing on GO as the primary nanomaterial and its impact on durability. This study aims to develop a procedure for the production of 3D-printed forearm prostheses (especially hard outer sockets). The production procedure is designed in the form of a parametric workflow (CAD model), which significantly speeds up the designing process of the prosthesis. This procedure is not fixedly dependent on the software (SW) equipment and is fully transferable into another SW environment. The use of these prostheses will significantly increase the comfort of their patients' lives. It is possible to produce prostheses faster and in larger amounts and variants by the usage of additive technology. The input for the own production of the prosthesis is a model of the internal soft socket of the patient. This soft socket (soft bed) is made by a qualified prosthetist. A 3D-scanned CAD model is obtained afterward using the scanning method by an automatic laser projector. An editable, parametric external socket (modifiable in any CAD format) is generated from the obtained 3D scan using a special algorithmic model. This socket, after the necessary individual modifications, is transferred to 3D printing technology and produced using powder technology Multi Jet Fusion (HP MJF). The result of the designed and tested procedure is a quickly editable 3D-printed outer socket (main part of prosthesis), which is able to fully replace the current long-fiber composite solution. Production of current solutions is relatively time-consuming, and only one piece is produced in a given time. The newly designed technology eliminates this. This study summarized the possibilities of speeding up the production of forearm prostheses (but not only these) by creating a parametric CAD model that is applicable to different patients. Nanomanufacturing and digital manufacturing (DM) are defining the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution—Industry 4.0—as enabling technologies for the processing of materials spanning several length scales. This review delineates the evolution of nanomaterials and nanomanufacturing in the digital age for applications in medicine, robotics, sensory technology, semiconductors, and consumer electronics. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to explore nanomaterial synthesis, optimize nanomanufacturing processes, and aid high-fidelity nanoscale characterization is discussed. This paper elaborates on different machine-learning and deep-learning algorithms for analyzing nanoscale images, designing nanomaterials, and nano quality assurance. The challenges associated with the application of machine- and deep-learning models to achieve robust and accurate predictions are outlined. The prospects of incorporating sophisticated AI algorithms such as reinforced learning, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), big data analytics for material synthesis, manufacturing process innovation, and nanosystem integration are discussed. The optimization of structure and thermal properties in 3D-printed insulation materials remains an underexplored area in the literature. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of 3D printing on the thermal properties of manufactured cellular composites. The materials studied were closed-cell foams with a complex cell structure based on the Voronoi cell model, manufactured using incremental technology (3D printing). The influence of the cellular structure of the composite, the type of material used, and the number of layers in the composite structure on its thermal properties, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal resistance, and coefficient of heat transfer, was analyzed. Samples of different types of thermosetting resins, characterized by different values of emissivity coefficient, were analyzed. It was shown that both the type of material, the number of layers of the composite, and the number of pores in its structure significantly affect its thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity and permeability depended on the number of layers and decreased up to 30% as the number of layers increased from one to four, while thermal resistance increased to 35%. The results indicate that material structure is key in regulating thermal conduction. Controlling the number of cells in a given volume of composite (and thus the size of the air cells) and the number of layers in the composite can be an effective tool in designing materials with high insulation performance. Among the prototype composites produced, the best thermal performance was that of the metalized four-layer cellular composites (λ = 0.035 ± 0.002 W/m·K, Rc = 1.15 ± 0.02 K·m2/W, U = 0.76 ± 0.01 W/m2·K). The cellular automata (CA) method has played an important role in the research and development of metallic materials. CA can interpret the microstructure changes of materials and obtain more abundant, accurate and intuitive information of microstructure evolution than conventional methods. CA can visually represent the process of grain formation, growth, development and change to us in a graphical way, which can assist us in analysis, thinking and solving problems. In the last five years, the application of CA in materials research has been rapidly developed, and CA has begun to occupy an increasingly important position in the simulation research of metallic materials. After introducing the advantages and limitations of CA compared to other widely used simulation methods, the purpose of this paper is to review the recent application progress on the microstructure simulation of metallic materials using CA, such as solidification, recrystallization, phase transformation and carbide precipitation occurring during forming and heat treatment. Specifically, recent research advances on microstructure simulation by CA in the fields of additive manufacturing, welding, asymmetrical rolling, corrosion prevention, etc., are also elaborated in this paper. Furthermore, this paper points out the future work direction of CA simulation in the research of metallic materials, especially in the simulation of the crystal structure, the prediction of mechanical properties, CA simulation software and rule systems, etc. These are expected to attract wide attention of researchers in the field of metallic materials and promote the development of CA in materials research. Ce-doped gadolinium gallium aluminum oxide (Ce: GGAG) precursors were first prepared by the microwave-assisted homogeneous precipitation method (MAHP). Thermal gravity-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area analysis (BET) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were employed to investigate the crystal structure, phase evolution and morphologies of the Ce: GGAG precursors and powders. The influence of Ga ion concentration in the salt solution on the properties of Ce: GGAG powders was investigated. All the precursors were transformed into single-phase GGAG after being calcined at 950 °C in a furnace for 3 h. Monodispersed Ce: GGAG powders were obtained as the Ga ion concentration was lower than 0.06 mol/L. Single-phase and dense Ce: GGAG ceramics were obtained after sintering at 1600 °C in a flowing oxygen atmosphere for 10 h. Specifically, the Ce: GGAG ceramic reached its maximum density of ~6.68 g/cm3, which was close to its theoretical density of 6.70 g/cm3, and exhibited the highest optical transmittance of 65.2% at 800 nm after hot isostatic pressing sintering (HIP) as the Ga ion concentration was 0.02 mol/L. The decay time and light yield of the GGAG ceramic were 35 ns and 35,000 ± 1250 ph/MeV, respectively, suggesting that Ce: GGAG ceramics prepared using MAHP-synthesized nanopowders are promising for scintillation applications. Particle assembly is a promising technique to create functional materials and devices from nanoscale building blocks. However, the control of particle arrangement and orientation is challenging and requires careful design of the assembly methods and conditions. In this study, the static and dynamic methods of particle assembly are reviewed, focusing on their applications in biomaterial sciences. Static methods rely on the equilibrium interactions between particles and substrates, such as electrostatic, magnetic, or capillary forces. Dynamic methods can be associated with the application of external stimuli, such as electric fields, magnetic fields, light, or sound, to manipulate the particles in a non-equilibrium state. This study discusses the advantages and limitations of such methods as well as nanoarchitectonic principles that guide the formation of desired structures and functions. It also highlights some examples of biomaterials and devices that have been fabricated by particle assembly, such as biosensors, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and artificial organs. It concludes by outlining the future challenges and opportunities of particle assembly for biomaterial sciences. This review stands as a crucial guide for scholars and professionals in the field, fostering further investigation and innovation. Hoard finds from the Bronze Age have appeared all over Europe, prompting questions about their functions (either as raw materials for recycling or votive objects). The hoard trove of raw materials from Przybysław in Greater Poland is an interesting example of a discovery that is related to the foundry activities of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age communities (c. 600 BC). The deposit consists of fragments of raw materials that were damaged end products intended for smelting. The research included the characterisation of the material in terms of the variety of the raw materials that were used. The individual elements of the hoard were characterised in terms of their chemical compositions, microstructures, and properties. A range of modern instrumental research methods were used: metallographic macroscopic and microscopic observations by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical-composition analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF), X-ray microanalysis (EDS), and detailed crystallisation analysis by electron microscopy with an emphasis on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). As part of this study, model alloys were also prepared for two of the selected chemical compositions, (i.e., CuPbSn and CuPb). These alloys were analysed for their mechanical and technological properties. This research of the hoard from Przybysław (Jarocin district, Greater Poland) has contributed to the recognition and interpretation of the function and nature of the hoard by using modern research and modelling methods as a cultic raw material deposit. By applying the physical vapour deposition method, hollow ceramic microspheres were coated with titanium, and subsequently, they were sintered using the spark plasma sintering technique to create a porous ceramic material that is lightweight and devoid of a matrix. The sintering process was carried out at temperatures ranging from 1050 to 1200 °C, with a holding time of 2 min. The samples were subjected to conventional thermal analyses (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, dilatometry), oxidation resistance tests, and thermal diffusivity measurements. Phase analysis of the samples was performed using the XRD and the microstructure of the prepared specimens was examined using electron microscopy. The titanium coating on the microspheres increased the compressive strength and density of the resulting ceramic material as the sintering temperature increased. Adsorption is one of the main methods of water purification. Novel advanced, eco-friendly, cost-effective adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and selectivity are required to remove pollutants from aqueous solutions. Plant polymers are viewed as both prospective adsorbents and as raw materials to produce them instead of conventional adsorption materials. There is widespread interest in using rice husk as a universal sorbent to remove different contaminants from aqueous media because of its surplus availability, low cost, and high content of oxygen containing functional and silanol groups as active sites for adsorptive extraction. Different methods of heat and chemical treatments have been developed to improve the sorption properties of raw rice husk. Unmodified rice husk and rice-husk-based sorbents have been tested to uptake non-ferrous, ferrous, minor, precious, rare, and rare-earth metals and radionuclides from artificial and industrial solutions, natural contaminated water, and industrial wastewater. In recent years, the field of construction engineering has experienced a significant paradigm shift, embracing the integration of machine learning (ML) methodologies, with a particular emphasis on forecasting the characteristics of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC). Despite the theoretical sophistication of existing models, persistent challenges remain—their opacity, lack of transparency, and real-world relevance for practitioners. To address this gap and advance our current understanding, this study employs the extra gradient (XG) boosting algorithm, crafting a comprehensive approach. Grounded in a meticulously curated database drawn from 43 seminal publications, encompassing 420 distinct records, this research focuses predominantly on three primary fiber types: crimped, hooked, and mil-cut. Complemented by hands-on experimentation involving 20 diverse SFRC mixtures, this empirical campaign is further illuminated through the strategic use of partial dependence plots (PDPs), revealing intricate relationships between input parameters and consequent compressive strength. A pivotal revelation of this research lies in the identification of optimal SFRC formulations, offering tangible insights for real-world applications. The developed ML model stands out not only for its sophistication but also its tangible accuracy, evidenced by exemplary performance against independent datasets, boasting a commendable mean target-prediction ratio of 99%. To bridge the theory–practice gap, we introduce a user-friendly digital interface, thoroughly designed to guide professionals in optimizing and accurately predicting the compressive strength of SFRC. Insulated-gate GaN-based transistors can fulfill the emerging demands for the future generation of highly efficient electronics for high-frequency, high-power and high-temperature applications. However, in contrast to Si-based devices, the introduction of an insulator on (Al)GaN is complicated by the absence of a high-quality native oxide for GaN. Trap states located at the insulator/(Al)GaN interface and within the dielectric can strongly affect the device performance. In particular, although AlGaN/GaN metal–insulator–semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MIS-HEMTs) provide superior properties in terms of gate leakage currents compared to Schottky-gate HEMTs, the presence of an additional dielectric can induce threshold voltage instabilities. Similarly, the presence of trap states can be detrimental for the operational stability and reliability of other architectures of GaN devices employing a dielectric layer, such as hybrid MIS-FETs, trench MIS-FETs and vertical FinFETs. In this regard, the minimization of trap states is of critical importance to the advent of different insulated-gate GaN-based devices. Among the various dielectrics, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is very attractive as a gate dielectric due to its large bandgap and band offsets to (Al)GaN, relatively high dielectric constant, high breakdown electric field as well as thermal and chemical stability against (Al)GaN. Additionally, although significant amounts of trap states are still present in the bulk Al2O3 and at the Al2O3/(Al)GaN interface, the current technological progress in the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process has already enabled the deposition of promising high-quality, uniform and conformal Al2O3 films to gate structures in GaN transistors. In this context, this paper first reviews the current status of gate dielectric technology using Al2O3 for GaN-based devices, focusing on the recent progress in engineering high-quality ALD-Al2O3/(Al)GaN interfaces and on the performance of Al2O3-gated GaN-based MIS-HEMTs for power switching applications. Afterwards, novel emerging concepts using the Al2O3-based gate dielectric technology are introduced. Civilization and technical progress are not possible without energy. Dynamic economic growth translates into a systematic increase in demand for electricity. Ensuring the continuity and reliability of electricity supplies is one of the most important aspects of energy security in highly developed countries. Growing energy consumption results not only in the need to build new power plants but also in the need to expand and increase transmission capacity. Therefore, large quantities of electric cables are produced all over the world, and after some time, they largely become waste. Recycling of electric cables focuses on the recovery of metals, mainly copper and aluminum, while polymer insulation is often considered waste and ends up in landfills. Currently, more and more stringent regulations are being introduced, mainly environmental ones, which require maximizing the reduction in waste. This article provides a literature review on cable recycling, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of various recycling methods, including mechanical and material recycling. It has been found that currently, there are very large possibilities for recycling cables, and intensive scientific work is being carried out on their development, which is consistent with global climate policy. Adsorption is one of the common stages in the hydrometallurgy of rare metals. Its efficiency is largely determined by the quality of the sorbent used. The purpose of this work was to create an activated sorbent based on rice husk cellulose for the extraction of rhenium from aqueous solutions. Two types of cellulose were obtained by treating rice husk with a 1.5% NaOH solution (alkaline cellulose) and a nitric acid solution in ethyl alcohol (Kürschner and Hoffer cellulose). They were tested by IR, SEM, TA, TPD-MS, and XRD methods. It was found that Kürschner and Hoffer cellulose does not contain lignin and retains structural order to a greater extent. By means of this cellulose carbonization at 600 °C and activation by physical, chemical, and combined methods, a series of sorbents were prepared and studied by different methods. It was determined that the sorbent KHC4-600VA obtained by combined activation of cellulose carbonizate by water vapor at 850 °C, followed by an alkaline treatment, has the best textural characteristics: S—~1200 m2·g−1, V—1.22 cm3·g−1, and R—2.05 nm. KHC4-600VA provides 90% recovery of Re (VII) ions from aqueous solutions. According to the Freundlich model, sorption proceeds favorably on the sorbent's heterogeneous surface. By leveraging such AI algorithms, researchers can efficiently search and analyze databases containing a wide range of material properties, enabling the identification of promising candidates for specific applications. This capability has profound implications across various industries, from drug development to energy storage, where materials performance is crucial. The low absorption of biological substances and living tissues in the red/near-infrared region (therapeutic window) makes luminophores emitting in the range of ~650–1350 nm favorable for in vitro and in vivo imaging. In contrast to commonly used organic dyes, inorganic red/NIR emitters, including ruthenium complexes, quantum dots, lanthanide compounds, and octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, not only exhibit excellent emission in the desired region but also possess additional functional properties, such as photosensitization of the singlet oxygen generation process, upconversion luminescence, photoactivated effects, and so on. However, despite their outstanding functional applicability, they share the same drawback—instability in aqueous media under physiological conditions, especially without additional modifications. One of the most effective and thus widely used types of modification is incorporation into silica, which is (1) easy to obtain, (2) biocompatible, and (3) non-toxic. In addition, the variety of morphological characteristics, along with simple surface modification, provides room for creativity in the development of various multifunctional diagnostic/therapeutic platforms. Over the years, FIB-SEM tomography has become an extremely important technique for the three-dimensional reconstruction of microscopic structures with nanometric resolution. This paper describes in detail the steps required to perform this analysis, from the experimental setup to the data analysis and final reconstruction. To demonstrate the versatility of the technique, a comprehensive list of applications is also summarized, ranging from batteries to shale rocks and even some types of soft materials. Moreover, the continuous technological development, such as the introduction of the latest models of plasma and cryo-FIB, can open the way towards the analysis with this technique of a large class of soft materials, while the introduction of new machine learning and deep learning systems will not only improve the resolution and the quality of the final data, but also expand the degree of automation and efficiency in the dataset handling. These future developments, combined with a technique that is already reliable and widely used in various fields of research, are certain to become a routine tool in electron microscopy and material characterization. Infrared detection technology plays an important role in remote sensing, imaging, monitoring, and other fields. So far, most infrared photodetectors are based on InGaAs and HgCdTe materials, which are limited by high fabrication costs, complex production processes, and poor compatibility with silicon-based readout integrated circuits. This hinders the wider application of infrared detection technology. Therefore, reducing the cost of high-performance photodetectors is a research focus. Colloidal quantum dot photodetectors have the advantages of solution processing, low cost, and good compatibility with silicon-based substrates. The quality of graphene intended for use in biosensors was assessed on manufactured chips using a set of methods including atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, and low-frequency noise investigation. It is shown that local areas of residues on the graphene surface, formed as a result of the interaction of graphene with a photoresist at the initial stage of chip development, led to a spread of chip resistance (R) in the range of 1–10 kOhm and to an increase in the root mean square (RMS) roughness up to 10 times, which can significantly worsen the reproducibility of the parameters of graphene chips for biosensor applications. It was observed that the control of the photoresist residues after photolithography (PLG) using AFM and subsequent additional cleaning reduced the spread of R values in chips to 1–1.6 kOhm and obtained an RMS roughness similar to the roughness in the graphene film before PLG. Monitoring of the spectral density of low-frequency voltage fluctuation (SU), which provides integral information about the system of defects and quality of the material, makes it possible to identify chips with low graphene quality and with inhomogeneously distributed areas of compressive stresses by the type of frequency dependence SU(f). This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon of superlubricity, its associated material characteristics, and its potential applications. Superlubricity, the state of near-zero friction between two surfaces, presents significant potential for enhancing the efficiency of mechanical systems, thus attracting significant attention in both academic and industrial realms. We explore the atomic/molecular structures that enable this characteristic and discuss notable superlubric materials, including graphite, diamond-like carbon, and advanced engineering composites. The review further elaborates on the methods of achieving superlubricity at both nanoscale and macroscale levels, highlighting the influence of environmental conditions. We also discuss superlubricity's applications, ranging from mechanical systems to energy conservation and biomedical applications. Despite the promising potential, the realization of superlubricity is laden with challenges. We address these technical difficulties, specifically those related to achieving and maintaining superlubricity, and the issues encountered in scaling up for industrial applications. Engineering materials encompass a wide spectrum of structural-functional products that are commonly used in the transportation (automotive, aerospace, naval), construction, machinery, and tooling industries. As compressive and/or tensile residual stresses typically induce pile-up and sink-in phenomena respectively during IIT, accurate prior test calibrations and ad hoc corrections are needed. The aim of this project was that of minimizing the dispersion of IIT raw data from different commercial nanodevices, calibration methods, and post-processing software in order to attain the final indentation hardness and modulus of selected coating materials with improved accuracy. The contributions have touched on various aspects of IIT, from a pedagogical basis to nanoplasticity science in metallic materials, while presenting important case studies of industrial applications with useful hints for new IIT developments and valuable suggestions for the revision of existing international codes. Ventilator-associated pneumonia is one of the most frequently encountered hospital infections and is an essential issue in the healthcare field. It is usually linked to a high mortality rate and prolonged hospitalization time. There is a lack of treatment, so alternative solutions must be continuously sought. The endotracheal tube is an indwelling device that is a significant culprit for ventilator-associated pneumonia because its surface can be colonized by different types of pathogens, which generate a multispecies biofilm. In the paper, we discuss the definition of ventilator-associated pneumonia, the economic burdens, and its outcomes. Then, we present the latest technological solutions for endotracheal tube surfaces, such as active antimicrobial coatings, passive coatings, and combinatorial methods, with examples from the literature. We end our analysis by identifying the gaps existing in the present research and investigating future possibilities that can decrease ventilator-associated pneumonia cases and improve patient comfort during treatment.
