Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements are a promising alternative to Portland clinker, however, a thorough understanding of their properties is needed for their broader use in the industry. One of the topics that requires a good understanding is the effect of the w/c ratio on the properties of CSA cements. To this end, the aim of this paper was to provide research into the effects of a w/c ratio in the range of 0.45–0.6 on the properties of fresh and hardened CSA pastes and mortars. For fresh mortars, consistency and setting time, as well as plastic shrinkage tests, were conducted, and were complemented by hydration heat tests, carried out on pastes. For hardened mortars, tests of compressive and flexural strength and dry shrinkage, as well as SEM photography, were conducted. It was found that, regardless of a higher hydration rate, the increase in w/c ratio decreased flexural and compressive strength, as well as shrinkage, while increasing consistency, setting time, and hydration heat. Also observed was a significant decrease in strength between 3 and 7 days of curing in mortars with a high w/c ratio. It can be concluded that, regardless of the hydration rate, low w/c ratios in CSA mortars provide better properties than high w/c ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tricalcium aluminate is an important phase of Portland clinker. In this paper, three polymorphs of C3A were prepared by means of the solid-state synthesis method using intensive milling of the raw material mixture which was doped with various amounts of Na2O and sintered at a temperature of 1300 °C for 2 h. The final products were evaluated through X-ray diffraction using Rietveld analysis. The effect of the Na dopant content on the change in the crystalline structure of tricalcium aluminate was studied. It was proven that the given preparation procedure, which differed from other studies, was close to the real conditions of the formation of Portland clinker, and it was possible to prepare a mixture of different polymorphs of calcium aluminate. Fundamental changes in the crystal structure occurred in the range of 3–4% Na, when the cubic structure changes to orthorhombic. At a dosage of Na dopant above 4%, the orthorhombic structure changes to a monoclinic structure. There are no clearly defined boundaries for the existence of individual C3A phases; these phases arise at the same time and overlap each other in the areas of their formation at different Na doses. The paper presents experimental results regarding the synthesis of Portland clinker starting from raw mixes based on two types of clayey precursors, i.e., clay and marl (the most common types of raw materials used in the cement industry), with and without glass waste content. The soda-lime glass waste addition (5.36–5.59 wt %), used to control the silica ratio of the raw mix, improved the raw mix burnability and decreased the calcination temperature (by 20 °C), leading to a decrease in fuel consumption and contributing to the reduction in CO2 emissions associated with clinker and cement production. The clinkers obtained by the calcination of raw mixes with glass waste content at 1430 °C with a 30 min plateau had a similar mineralogical composition and microstructure to the clinkers obtained from the reference raw mixes and fulfilled the requirements of the specific standard EN 197-1. The obtained clinkers were used to produce two types of Portland cement, i.e., a unitary cement (CEM I) and a binary blended cement with slag (CEM II/B-S). The main characteristics of these cements, i.e., loss on ignition, insoluble residue, sulfate and chloride contents, as well as the setting time and soundness, meet the conditions stipulated in the EN 197-1 standard. The values of compressive strength, assessed on mortars after 2, 7 and 28 days of curing, allow the classification of all CEM I cements in the 42.5 R class. In the case of CEM II/B-S cements, those obtained from raw mixes with clay can be classified in the 42.5 N class, while those obtained from raw mixes with marl are classified in the 32.5 R class. Featured Application: In this paper, blended cements are proposed as an effective means of meeting the needs of mitigating climatic change. This proposal is a two-pronged strategy, i.e., durable and sustainable. The pozzolanic reaction of four binders is assessed, which is related to an alkali–silica reaction (ASR). Thanks to the findings made here, mix-design optimization can be performed. Alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is a swelling reaction that occurs in concrete structures over time between the reactive amorphous siliceous aggregate particles and the hydroxyl ions of the hardened concrete pore solution. The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of pozzolanic Portland cements on the alkali–silica reaction (ASR) evaluated from two different points of view: (i) alkali-silica reaction (ASR) abatement and (ii) climatic change mitigation by clinker reduction, i.e., by depleting its emissions. Open porosity, SEM microscopy, compressive strength and ASR-expansion measurements were performed in mortars made with silica fume, siliceous coal fly ash, natural pozzolan and blast-furnace slag. The main contributions are as follows: (i) the higher the content of reactive silica in the pozzolanic material, the greater the ASR inhibition level; (ii) silica fume and coal fly ash are the best Portland cement constituents for ASR mitigation. The present work evaluates the feasibility of using volcanic fly ash (VFA) generated by the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on the island of La Palma (Spain) in 2021, as a precursor in the preparation of cementitious materials with different Portland cement (PC) replacement levels (0%, 30%, 70% and 100%), in the absence (Blended Cement, BC) and presence of an alkaline activator (Hybrid Alkaline Cement, HAC, and Alkaline Cements, AC). Hydration kinetics (isothermal conduction calorimetry), paste mechanical strengths and reaction products were characterised by XRD, FTIR, TG/DTG and BSEM/EDX. The results obtained indicate that the strengths developed by the hybrid alkaline cements (HAC) are higher than those of the blended cements (BC), especially at the age of 2 days, where 25 MPa were obtained with the replacement of 70% PC by VFA. Alkaline cements (AC, 100% VFA) that were prepared with 8 M NaOH solution as the activator reached 40 MPa after 2 days. It was observed that in all the binders, depending on the initial composition of the binder mixture and the percentage of replacement and/or activator, VFA reacts to form cementitious gels, C-A-S-H and N-A-S-H type, which supports its use as a mineral addition to blended cement or as a precursor in the preparation of alkaline and hybrid alkaline cements. This paper presents the research data of the fire-temperature influence on Portland CEM I (OPC) and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) types of cement blend composites as cooling materials dedicated for infill and covers in fire systems. The data present the material responses for four types at high-temperature elevation times (0, 15, 30, 60 min), such as core heat curves, differences in specimens color, flexural and compressive strength parameters. Materials were tested using the DSC method to collect information about enthalpies. The differences between cement blend composites were compared with commonly used cooling materials such as gypsum blends. It is shown that modifications to Portland cement composites by calcium sulfoaluminate cement have a significant influence on the cooling performance during high-temperature, even for 60 min of exposure. The temperature increase rates in the material core were slower in composites with regards to additionally containing calcium sulfoaluminate in 100–150 °C range. After 60 min of high-temperature elevation, the highest flexural and compressive strength was 75% OPC/25% CSA cement composition. The influence on cooling properties was not related to strength properties. Reducing cement CO2 footprint is a societal need. This is being achieved mainly by replacing an increasing amount of Portland clinker by supplementary cementitious materials. However, this comes at a price: lower mechanical strengths at early ages due to slow pozzolanic reaction(s). This is being addressed by using accelerator admixtures. In this context, calcium silicate hydrate nucleation seeding seems to have a promising future, as it can accelerate cement and pozzolanic reactions at early ages, optimising their microstructures, without compromising late strength and durability performances. In fact, these features could even be improved. Moreover, other uses are low temperature concreting, precasting, shotconcrete, etc. Here, we focus on reviewing recent reports on calcium silicate hydrate seeding using commercially available admixtures. Current knowledge on the consequences of nucleation seeding on hydration reactions and on early and late mechanical strengths is discussed. It is noted that other features, in addition to the classic alite hydration acceleration, are covered here including the enhanced ettringite precipitation and the very efficient porosity refinement, which take place in the seeded binders. Portland cement tends to exhibit negative environmental impacts; thus, it is required to find measures that will improve its green credentials. In this study, we report a blended Portland slag cement as an alternative environmentally-friendly building material in order to reduce the total carbon footprint resulted from the production of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC), which may resolve the environmental issues associated with carbon dioxide emissions. The ordinary Portland cement type I enhanced by basic oxygen steelmaking slag (BOF) is produced and casted into cubic and beam-like samples for the compressive and three-point bending tests, and the compressive and flexural strengths are experimentally measured. Numerical simulations are conducted to compare with the experimental result and satisfactory agreements are obtained. X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations and porosity tests are then carried out using the semi-adiabatic calorimetry, which indicates that 5% BOF is the optimal ratio to accelerate the hydration process while increasing the amount of hydration products, especially at the early curing age of 3 days. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images further indicate that BOF can be used to prevent the development of microcracks while mitigating their propagation within cement mortar. Our study indicates that the compressive strength of OPC can be critically increased by BOF at the relatively low concentrations of 5%. The blended slag cement reported in this paper provides advanced understanding on the green building material that uses byproduct wastes for the mechanical and electrical performance. The paper presents the composition and properties of low-emission ternary cements: Portland multicomponent cement CEM II/C-M and multicomponent cement CEM VI. In the ternary cements, Portland clinker was replaced at the levels of 40% and 55% with a mixture of the main components such as limestone (LL), granulated blast furnace slag (S) and siliceous fly ash (V). Portland multicomponent cements CEM II/C-M and CEM VI are low-emission binders with CO2 emissions ranging from 340 (CEM VI) kg to 453 (CEM II/C-M) kg per Mg of cement. The results obtained indicate the possibility of a wider use of ground limestone (LL) in cement composition. This is important in the case of limited market availability of fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. The tests conducted on concrete have shown that the necessary condition for obtaining a high strength class and durability of concrete from CEM II/C-M and CEM VI ternary cements is low water–cement ratio. Durability characteristics of concrete (carbonation susceptibility, chloride ion permeation, frost resistance) made of CEM II/C-M and CEM VI cements were determined after 90 days of hardening. Protecting stone buildings from weathering and decay is a major challenge in the conservation of built heritage. Most of the stone consolidants currently available are well suited to silicate stones, but are less compatible with limestone. In this paper we present for the first time the results over a 4-year period of various consolidation treatments carried out using nanolime on 6 of the most representative and significant stones used in historic buildings in the United Kingdom. Tests investigated the influence of stone type, environmental conditions and pre-treatments on the effectiveness of the consolidation treatment. A comprehensive and rigorous testing programme was carried out to evaluate the short (12 weeks) and longer-term (4 years) effects. Stone samples were characterised before and after treatment using light and electron microscopy, sorptivity tests and a novel methodology employing drilling resistance to interrogate the near surface effects. Results show that for some of the stones, such as Clunch and Bath Stone, the positive effect of the treatment with nanolime is noticeable after 4 years since application. However, results for other stones such as Portland and magnesian limestone showed that the initial beneficial effect of the treatment is reduced after 4 years. Nanolime treatment of Ham Stone produced an unnoticeable effect on the continuous natural reduction of the drilling resistance of the specimen over time. The results presented are of immense value to conservators as they provide essential guidance on the most appropriate repair approach. Impact to the conservation industry will be to avoid the use of nanolime on stones where there is no perceivable benefit, reducing the risk of adverse effects, including potential damage to buildings. This article presents recent research on cements containing GGBFS and their modifications with accelerating admixtures. The initial setting time and hydration heat evolution results are presented for cement CEM II/B-S and CEM III/A manufactured with three Portland clinkers of various phase compositions. The research was carried out at 8 °C and 20 °C. The main objective is to assess the behavior of blended cements in cooperation with modern admixtures that contain nucleation seeds. The authors aimed to compare and evaluate different methods to reduce setting time, namely, the effects of temperature, the specific surface area of cement and GGBFS, the type of Portland clinker, the content of GGBFS, and presence of accelerators. Many of these aspects appear in separate studies, and the authors wanted a more comprehensive coverage of the subject. Those methods of reducing the setting time can be ranked: the most effective is to increase the temperature of the ingredients and the surroundings, the second is to reduce the GGBFS content in cement, and the use of accelerators, and the least effective is the additional milling of Portland clinker. However, of these methods, only the use of accelerators is acceptable in terms of sustainability. Chemical reactions with reservoir fluids and geology related in-situ stress changes may cause damages to cement sealing material in plugged and abandoned oil, gas and CO2 wells. To avoid leakages, a legitimate monitoring technique is needed that could allow for early warning in case such damages occur. In this paper, we test the utility of oil and gas well cement with a conductive filler in sensing stress changes. To this end, we have measured the resistance response of Portland G—oil and gas well cement with carbon nanofibers (CNF) to axial load during uniaxial compressive strength test. Simultaneously, the microseismicity data were collected. The resistance of the nanocomposite was measured using two-point method in the direction of loading. The resistance changes were correlated with acoustic emission events. A total of four different material response regions were distinguished and the resistivity and acoustic emission changes in these regions were described. Our results suggest that the two complementary methods, i.e., acoustic emission and resistance measurements, can be used for sensing stress state in materials including well cement/CNF composites. The results suggest that the well cement/CNF composites can be a good candidate material to be used as a transducer sensing changes in stress state in, e.g., well plugs up to material failure. Clinker reduction in cementitious binders is of paramount importance today, and nanotechnology has extended permissible limits. In the present study, a reference binder consisting of 60% Portland cement, 20% limestone, 20% fly ash, 3% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres and 2% superplasticizer is optimized with three different types of nano-montmorillonite (nMt) dispersions; two organomodified ones and an inorganic one at different proportions (0.5% to 4%). Flexural strength, measured on day 7, 28, 56 and 90, was improved after day 28 with the addition of inorganic nMt. Thermal gravimetric analyses carried out on day 7, 28, 56 and 90 coupled with x-ray diffraction (at day 28) showed a distinctively enhanced pozzolanic reaction. Backscattered electron imaging confirmed changes in the microstructure. Late age relative density measurements of the nMt cementitious nanocomposites showed higher values than these of the reference paste, which can be attributed to better particle packing. Mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements give support to the optimal nMt dosage, being 1% by total mass of binder and water impermeability tests (modified with BS EN 492:2012) suggest that inorganic nMt can be a viable option material where permeability constitutes a prerequisite. The study of the effect of cement type on the action of an admixture increasing the volume of concrete (containing aluminum powder), used in amounts of 0.5–1.5% of cement mass, was presented. The tests were carried out on cement mortars with Portland (CEM I) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement (CEM III). The following tests were carried out for the tested mortars: the air content in fresh mortars, compressive strength, flexural strength, increase in mortar volume, bulk density, pore structure evaluation (by the computer image analysis method) and changes in the concentration of OH− ions during the hydration of used cements. Differences in the action of the tested admixture depending on the cement used were found. To induce the expansion of CEM III mortars, a smaller amount of admixture is required than in the case of CEM I cement. Using the admixture in amounts above 1% of the cement mass causes cracks of mortars with CEM III cement due to slow hydrogen evolution, which occurs after mortar plasticity is lost. The use of an aluminum-containing admixture reduces the strength properties of the cement mortars, the effect being stronger in the case of CEM III cement. The effect of calcium nitrate (CN) dosages from 0 to 3% (of cement mass) on the properties of fresh cement paste rheology and hardening processes and on the strength of hardened concrete with two types of limestone-blended composite cements (CEM II A-LL 42.5 R and 42.5 N) at different initial (two-day) curing temperatures (−10 °C to +20 °C) is presented. The rheology results showed that a CN dosage up to 1.5% works as a plasticizing admixture, while higher amounts demonstrate the effect of increasing viscosity. At higher CN content, the viscosity growth in normal early strength (N type) cement pastes is much slower than in high early strength (R type) cement pastes. For both cement-type pastes, shortening the initial and final setting times is more effective when using 3% at +5 °C and 0 °C. At these temperatures, the use of 3% CN reduces the initial setting time for high early strength paste by 7.4 and 5.4 times and for normal early strength cement paste by 3.5 and 3.4 times when compared to a CN-free cement paste. The most efficient use of CN is achieved at −5 °C for compressive strength enlargement; a 1% CN dosage ensures the compressive strength of samples at a −5 °C initial curing temperature, with high early strength cement exceeding 3.5 MPa but being less than the required 3.5 MPa in samples with normal early strength cement. A non-equilibrium diffusion–reaction model is proposed to describe chloride transport and binding in cementitious materials. A numerical solution for this non-linear transport with reaction problem is obtained using the finite element method. The effective chloride diffusion coefficients and parameters of the chloride binding are determined using the inverse method based on a diffusion–reaction model and experimentally measured chloride concentrations. The investigations are performed for two significantly different cements: ordinary Portland and blast furnace cements. The results are compared with the classical diffusion model and appropriate apparent diffusion coefficients. The role of chloride binding, with respect to the different binding isotherms applied, in the overall transport of chlorides is discussed, along with the applicability of the two models. The proposed work allows the determination of important parameters that influence the longevity of concrete structures. The developed methodology can be extended to include more ions, electrostatic interactions, and activity coefficients for even more accurate estimation of the longevity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a valuable commodity originating during processes of road/highways rehabilitations, resurfacing in the cases of the revelation of underneath-placed layers. Removed material can be successfully recycled and utilized as a supplementing material for new hot asphalt mixes. However, its dosages are limited because of variations in properties of aged bitumen compared to fresh material and, thus, a significant amount of waste material is remaining as waste products. Nonetheless, this commodity may find usage in the construction industry that suffers from a shortage of high-quality and easily available aggregates. This work aimed to investigate the optimal substitution of mined natural aggregate with commonly available RAP in order to produce composites with the comparable mechanical performance of reference ordinary Portland concrete. The aggregate substitutions up to 100% with RAP have been studied with a combination of mechanical and analytical techniques. Obtained experimental data showed changes in the porous structure, mineralogy, and in the amount of formed cement-related hydration products that influenced the mechanical performance of produced composites. Composite with 10% of natural aggregate substitution with RAP has shown the strength class C16/20 after 28 days of water curing, according to the EN 206-1. Calcined clay has become the supplementary cementitious materials with the greatest potential to reduce the clinker/cement. In this research, the mechanical strengths and sulphate resistance of blended cements with a high content of calcined clay as a pozzolanic addition were evaluated to demonstrate that these cements could be designed as CEM (cement) type IV/A-SR and IV/B-SR cements by the current European standard UNE-EN 197-1: 2011. The blended cements were prepared by two Portland cements (P1 and PY6) with different mineralogical compositions and a calcined clay. The level of replacement was greater than 40% by weight. The results obtained confirm the decrease in the mechanical strengths and the increase in the sulfate resistance of the two Portland cements when they are replaced by calcined clay at a level of replacement greater than 40%. These results are a consequence of the chemical effect from the pozzolanic activity of the calcined clay. Therefore, there is an important decrease in portlandite levels of paste liquid phase that causes the increase in sulfate resistance and the decrease of the mechanical strengths. This work aims to study the effect of Ca(C18H35O2)2 (calcium stearate) on the properties of concrete by using Portland composite cement (PCC) and fly ash as binders. The calcium stearate content used in the concrete here consists of 0, 1, 5, and 10 kg per m3 of concrete volume, or alternatively, 0 to 2.85% by the weight of cement. We have performed several tests for each of the contents, namely, compressive strength, water absorption, chloride ion infiltration, and accelerated corrosion tests. According to the testing, we have found that with the addition of calcium stearate at 1 kg/m3 in self-compacting concrete (SCC) with 10% fly ash, the mechanical and physical properties of SCC can be improved significantly when compared to the SCC without fly ash and calcium stearate, resulting in a stable compressive strength, lower water absorption, lower chloride ion infiltration, and lower degree of corrosion attack. A new technology was tested to improve the cooking efficiency of the raw mixture for Portland clinker production by the use of nano-Ca(OH)2. A decrease in the free lime concentration after the firing of approximately 35% and 55% in the nano-added clinkers burned at 1350 °C and 1450 °C, respectively, with respect to the standard Portland clinkers was observed. Moreover, in the nano-added clinkers, a slight decrease in alite (C3S), of approximately 2–4 wt%, and increase in belite (C2S), of approximately 5–6 wt%, were observed. Despite these variations, the C2S and C3S abundance lies within the ranges for standard Portland clinkers. The results showed that the nano-addition leads to an increase of the raw mixtures' cooking efficiency. The relatively low energy required for the clinker firing could be used to increase the plant productivity and decrease the CO2 emissions during clinker burning. The decrease of the work index of the clinkers produced by the use of the nano-Ca(OH)2 also contributes to the energy saving during clinker grinding. Differences were also found in the pore size distribution among nano-added clinkers and the standard Portland clinker. The smallest porosities with the modal volume lying in the class of 3 × 10−6 mm3 were found to increase by the use of nano-Ca(OH)2. However, the pore volumes higher than 2.0 × 10−5 mm3 decreased in the nano-added clinkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
