This review explores the integration of graphene and liquid crystals to advance sensor technologies across multiple domains, with a focus on recent developments in thermal and infrared sensing, flexible actuators, chemical and biological detection, and environmental monitoring systems. The synergy between graphene's exceptional electrical, optical, and thermal properties and the dynamic behavior of liquid crystals leads to sensors with significantly enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility. Notable contributions of this review include highlighting key advancements such as graphene-doped liquid crystal IR detectors, shape-memory polymers for flexible actuators, and composite hydrogels for environmental pollutant detection. Additionally, this review addresses ongoing challenges in scalability and integration, providing insights into current research efforts aimed at overcoming these obstacles. The potential for multi-modal sensing, self-powered devices, and AI integration is discussed, suggesting a transformative impact of these composite sensors on various sectors, including health, environmental monitoring, and technology. This review demonstrates how the fusion of graphene and liquid crystals is pushing the boundaries of sensor technology, offering more sensitive, adaptable, and innovative solutions to global challenges. As a critical material for high-temperature components of aero-engines, the mechanical properties of Ti65 alloy, subjected to high-temperature and long-term thermal exposure, directly affect its service safety. The room-temperature tensile properties of the Ti65 alloy after thermal exposure to temperatures ranging from 450 °C to 650 °C for 100 h were investigated. The results indicate that as the thermal exposure temperature increases, the strength of Ti65 alloy initially increases and then decreases, while ductility exhibits a decreasing trend. The strength of the thermally exposed alloy positively correlates with the size and content of the α2 phase. The ductility of the thermally exposed alloy is comprehensively influenced by the surface oxidation behavior, α2 phase, and silicides. After the prolonged thermal exposure, stress concentration at the crack tips within the oxide layer was enhanced with the increased thickness of the surface TiO2 oxide layer, leading to premature fracture due to reduced alloy ductility. Furthermore, the α2 phase in the matrix promotes the planar slip of dislocations, while silicides at the α/β phase boundaries hinder dislocation motion, causing dislocation pile-ups. In the present research, the impacts of Ce additions at various concentrations (0, 1.0, 3.4, and 4.0 wt.%) on the evolution of the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Mg-3Sn alloys were investigated. The findings demonstrate that adding Ce caused the creation of a new ternary MgSnCe phase in the magnesium matrix. Some new Mg17Ce2 phases are generated in the microstructure when Ce levels reach 4%. The thermal conductivity of the Mg-3Sn alloy is significantly improved due to Ce addition, and the Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy exhibits the highest thermal conductivity, up to 133.8 W/(m·K) at 298 K. After extrusion, both the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties are further improved. The thermal conductivity perpendicular to the extrusion direction of Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy could achieve 136.28 W/(m·K), and the tensile and yield strengths reach 264.3 MPa and 227.2 MPa, with an elongation of 7.9%. Adding Ce decreases the dissolved Sn atoms and breaks the eutectic α-Mg and Mg2Sn network organization, leading to a considerable increase in the thermal conductivity of as-cast Mg-3Sn alloys. The study examined the possibility of intercalation of montmorillonite with neomycin in an aqueous drug solution and the factors influencing the effectiveness of this process, such as the ion exchange capacity and process conditions, including the time and temperature of incubation with the drug. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC/TG), and Zeta potential measurement were used to confirm drug intercalation as well as to investigate the nature of clay–drug interactions. The obtained conjugates with the most favorable physicochemical properties were also tested for antibacterial response against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) to confirm that the bactericidal properties of neomycin were retained after intercalation and UV–VIS spectrophotometry was used to examine the kinetics of drug release from the carrier. The results of the conducted research clearly indicate the successful intercalation of neomycin in montmorillonite and indicate the influence of process parameters on the properties of not only the conjugates themselves but also the properties of the intercalated drug, particularly its bactericidal activity. Ultimately, a temperature of 50 °C was found to be optimal for effective drug intercalation and the conjugates obtained within 2 h showed the highest antibacterial activity, indicating the highest potential of the thus-obtained montmorillonite conjugates as neomycin carriers. The thermal and optical properties of 60TeO2-20K2TeO3-10WO3-10Nb2O5 (in mol%) glasses doped with Ho2O3, Er2O3, and Tm2O3 were explored in the present work. The thermal stability, refractive index n, extinction coefficient k, absorption coefficient α, and optical band gap of the glasses were evaluated. The UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectra, the Judd–Ofelt intensity parameter, the spectroscopic quality factor, and the emission and absorption cross-sections were calculated to investigate the effects of Er3+ and Tm3+, respectively, on the band spectroscopic properties of Ho3+ ions. The results showed that the maximum emission cross-section was approximately 8 × 10 − 21   c m 2 , and the values of the full width at half maximum ( F W H M) , quality factor ( σ e × F W H M) , and gain coefficient of Ho3+: 5I7 → 5I8 were also reported. The value of the F W H M × σ e was 1200 × 10 − 28   c m 3 , which showed greater gain characteristics than earlier study results. In the context of ecological sustainability, this study focuses on the effect of variables of pasture fibers on the thermal properties of slag bricks made from a green recyclable material. This experiment uses slag as the binder, sand as the aggregate, and pasture fiber as an additive. The experimental variables include the additive content ratio of the pasture fiber, the size of the pasture fiber, and the type of pasture fiber. Significance analysis of the experimental results of the thermal performance tests is carried out using Minitab 18.1.0 software, and the optimal ratios for the thermal performance of the composite samples are derived from the response optimizer and conformity analysis. The results of the experiment's test analysis using Minitab 18 software indicate that, with an increase in pasture fiber content, the thermal performance of the composite samples initially decreases before increasing. Additionally, the lower the thermal conductivity of the composite sample, the lower the apparent density and the higher the porosity. Incorporating pasture fibers into slag bricks, as revealed in this study, reduces the waste of pasture resources in pastoral areas and promotes the development of sustainable building materials with favorable thermal properties. Thermoelectric materials that can convert thermal energy to electrical energy are stable and long-lasting and do not emit greenhouse gases; these properties render them useful in novel power generation devices that can conserve and utilize lost heat. SiC exhibits good mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. It can withstand elevated temperatures and thermal shock and is well suited for thermoelectric conversions in high-temperature and harsh environments, such as supersonic vehicles and rockets. This paper reviews the potential of SiC as a high-temperature thermoelectric and third-generation wide-bandgap semiconductor material. Recent research on SiC thermoelectric materials is reviewed, and the principles and methods for optimizing the thermoelectric properties of SiC are discussed. This study compares the workability, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of structural self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLWC) formulations using pumice aggregate (PA), expanded perlite aggregate (EPA), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF). FA and SF were used as partial substitutes for cement at a 10% ratio in various mixes, impacting different aspects: According to the obtained results, FA enhanced the workability but SF reduced it, while SF improved the compressive and splitting tensile strengths more than FA. EPA, used as a fine aggregate alongside PA, decreased the workability, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength compared to the control mix (K0). The thermal properties were altered by FA and SF similarly, while EPA notably reduced the thermal conductivity coefficients. The thermal conductivity coefficients (TCCs) of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures ranged from 0.275 to 0.364 W/mK. K0 had a TCC of 0.364 W/mK. With 10% FA, K1 achieved 0.305 W/mK; K2 with 10% SF reached 0.325 W/mK. K3 and K4, using EPA instead of PA, showed significantly lower TCC values: 0.275 W/mK and 0.289 W/mK, respectively. FA and SF improved the thermal conductivity compared to K0, while EPA further reduced the TCC values in K3 and K4 compared to K1 and K2. The compressive strength (CS) values of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures at 7 and 28 days reveal notable trends. Using 10% FA in K1 decreased the CS at both 7 days (12.16 MPa) and 28 days (22.36 MPa), attributed to FA's gradual pozzolanic activity. Conversely, K2 with SF showed increased CS at 7 days (17.88 MPa) and 28 days (29.89 MPa) due to SF's rapid pozzolanic activity. This paper presents the results of the research on the structure and thermal properties of materials made from fly ash based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Composites based on a polyethylene matrix with 5, 10, and 15 wt% fly ash from hard coal combustion content were examined. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) was used to identify characteristic functional groups present in the chemical structure of polyethylene and the composites based on its matrix. Structural analysis was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and microscopic examinations. Mechanical properties were also examined. Analysis of the thermal effect values determined by the DSC technique, XRD, and FTIR-ATR allowed the evaluation of the crystallinity of the tested materials. Polyethylene is generally considered to be a two-phase system consisting of crystalline and amorphous regions and is a plastic characterized by a significant crystalline phase content. Based on the FTIR-ATR spectra, DSC curves, and XRD, the effect of the filler and the changes occurring in the materials studied resulted in a decrease in the degree of crystallinity and a change in the melting point and crystallization temperature of the polymer matrix were established. Microscopic examinations were carried out to analyze the microstructure of the composites to collect information on the distribution and shape of the filler particles, indicating their size and distribution in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the use of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) allowed for the microanalysis of the chemical composition of the filler particles. This work evaluates the electrical, optical and thermal properties of Sn-doped GexSi1-xOy thin films for use as microbolometer sensing materials. The films were prepared using a combination of a radio frequency (RF) magnetron and direct current (DC) sputtering using a Kurt J Leskar Proline PVD-75 series sputtering machine. Thin films were deposited in an O2+Ar environment at a chamber pressure of 4 mTorr. The thicknesses of the thin films were varied between 300 nm–1.2 µm by varying the deposition time. The morphology and microstructure of thin films were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging and X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the atomic composition was determined using the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) function of a scanning electron microscope. The thin film with an atomic composition of Ge0.45Si0.05Sn0.15O0.35 was found to be amorphous. We used the Arrhenius relationship to determine the activation energy as well as temperature coefficient of resistance of the thin films, which were found to be 0.2529 eV and −3.26%/K, respectively. The noise voltage power spectral density (PSD) of the film was analyzed using a Primarius—9812DX noise analyzer using frequencies ranging from 2 Hz to 10 kHz. The noise voltage PSD of the film was found to be 1.76 × 10−11 V2/Hz and 2.78 × 10−14 V2/Hz at 2 Hz and 1 K H z frequencies, respectively. The optical constants were determined using the ellipsometry reflection data of samples using an RC2 and infrared (IR) VASE Mark-II ellipsometer from J A Woollam. Absorption, transmission and reflection data for a wavelength range of 900 nm–5000 nm were also determined. We also determined the optical constant values such as the real and imaginary parts of refractive index (n and k, respectively) and real and imaginary part of permittivity ( ε 1 and ε 2 , respectively) for wavelength ranges between 193 nm to 35 µm. An optical band gap of 1.03 eV was determined from absorption data and using Tauc's equation. In addition, the thermal conductivity of the film was analyzed using a Linseis thin film analyzer employing the 3ω method. The thermal conductivity of a 780 nm thick film was found to be 0.38 Wm−1K−1 at 300 K. Graphene foam prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method is a promising thermal interfacial material. However, the thermal properties of graphene foam highly depend on the experimental fabrication conditions during the chemical vapor deposition process. Aiming to reveal how to prepare the appropriate graphene foam for the various thermal management scenarios, the influence of experimental conditions on thermal properties of graphene foam was investigated. Furthermore, the contribution of thermal conductivity and thermal radiation to the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam was carried out for comparison. The research results showed that the porosity and the cross-section shape of the struts of the growth template were two critical factors affecting the thermal transport of graphene foam, especially with the increase of temperature. In addition, the deposition time of graphene determined the wall thickness and affected the thermal conductivity directly. The thermal radiation contributed more than thermal conductivity when the temperature climbed continuously. Comparatively, the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam composite with high porosity and circular-shape struts was much superior to that of others at high temperature. To meet the current demand for lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, a novel sol-gel synthesis route is presented for the preparation of Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 doped with cerium (Ce = 0, 0.01, and 0.02 mol%) and vanadium (V = 0, 0.3, and 0.4 mol%). X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the formation of a perovskite phase (space group P4mm) for all samples after calcination at 800 °C and sintering at 1250, 1350, and 1450 °C, where it is proposed that both dopants occupy the B site. Sintering studies show that V doping allows the sintering temperature to be reduced to at least 1250 °C. Undoped BCZT samples sintered at the same temperature show reduced functional properties compared to V-doped samples, i.e., d33 values increase by an order of magnitude with doping. The dissipation factor tan δ decreases with increasing sintering temperature for all doping concentrations, while the Curie temperature TC increases for all V-doped samples, reaching 120 °C for high-concentration co-doped samples. All results indicate that vanadium doping can facilitate the processing of BCZT at lower sintering temperatures without compromising performance while promoting thermal property stability. MCrAlY (M = Ni and/or Co) metallic coatings are essential for the protection of hot-end components against thermal and corrosion damage. Increasing the Al content is considered a feasible solution to improve the high-temperature performance of MCrAlY coatings. In this paper, the effects of high Al contents (12–20 wt.%) on the phase constituents and cast microstructures in MCrAlY alloys were studied by high-energy X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques combined with phase equilibria calculations. High Al content improved the stability of β, σ, and α phases. Meanwhile, an evolution of the cast microstructure morphology from a dendrite structure to an equiaxed grain structure was observed. The thermal properties were analyzed, which were closely related to the phase constituents and solid-to-solid phase transitions at evaluated temperatures. The paper presents and discusses the results of a study of the thermal properties of cement composites with different contents of magnetite aggregate (0%, 20%, 40% and 60% by volume). The effect of grain size on the evaluated thermal properties was also investigated. For this purpose, concrete containing 50% by volume of magnetite aggregate with four different fractions (1–2 mm, 2–4 mm, 4–8 mm and 8–16 mm) was used. Thermal parameters were evaluated on specimens fully saturated with water and dried to a constant mass at 65 °C. The series with varying grain sizes of magnetite achieved thermal conductivity values in the range of 2.76–3.03 W/(m·K) and 2.00–2.21 W/(m·K) at full water saturation and after drying to a constant mass, respectively. In the case of the series with 20% magnetite by volume, the thermal conductivity was 2.65 W/(m·K) and 1.99 W/(m·K) for the material fully saturated with water and dried to a constant mass, respectively. The series with a 60% volume share of magnetite obtained values of this parameter of 3.47 W/(m·K) and 2.66 W/(m·K), respectively, under the same assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rigid porous polymeric monoliths are robust, highly efficient, versatile stationary phases. They offer simple preparation and convenient modification provided by a whole range of synthesis factors, e.g., starting monomers, cross-linkers, initiators, porogens, polymerization techniques, and temperature. The main aim of this study was to synthesize polymeric monoliths and determine the correlation between polymerization parameters and the porosity and thermal stability of the obtained materials. Polymeric monoliths were synthesized directly in HPLC columns using N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and 4-vinylpiridine (4VP) as functional monomers, with trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) serving as the cross-linking monomer. During copolymerization a mixture of cyclohexanol/decane-1-ol was used as the pore-forming diluent. Polymerization was carried out at two different temperatures: 55 and 75 °C. As a result, monoliths with highly developed internal structure were synthesized. The value of their specific surface area was in the range of 92 m2/g to 598 m2/g, depending on the monomer composition and polymerization temperature. Thermal properties of the obtained materials were investigated by means of thermogravimetry (TG). Significant differences in thermal behavior were noticed between monoliths synthesized at 55 and 75 °C. Additionally, the poly(NVP-co-TRIM) monolith was successfully applied in GC analyses. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the thermal stability of superlattice-like (SLL) thin films fabricated by varying the sputtering sequences of the SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1 and SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 configurations. Our results reveal significantly enhanced ten-year data retention (Tten) for both thin films measured at 124.3 °C and 151.9 °C, respectively. These values surpass the Tten of Ge2Sb2Te5 (85 °C), clearly demonstrating the superior thermal stability of the studied SLL configurations. Interestingly, we also observe a distinct difference in the thermal stability between the two SLL configurations. The superior thermal stability of SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 is attributed to the diffusion of the Sb precipitated phase from Ge8Sb92 to GeTe. This diffusion process effectively reduces the impact of the Sb phase on the thermal stability of the thin film. In contrast, in the case of SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1, the presence of the Sb precipitated phase in Ge8Sb92 facilitates the crystallization of GeTe, leading to reduced thermal stability. These findings underscore the significant influence of the sputtering sequence on the atomic behavior and thermal properties of superlattice-like phase change materials. Poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene) (PFO) is a promising material for polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) due to its advantageous properties. To enhance its electron transporting capabilities, diblock polymers were synthesized by attaching polystyrene (PSt) chains of varying lengths to one end of the PFO molecule. In a comparative study with PFO homopolymer, the diblock polymers maintained similar thermal properties, absorption spectra, and photoluminescent stability, while exhibiting slightly deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels and higher crystallinity. Notably, diblock polymers with shorter polystyrene blocks demonstrated higher electron mobility than the PFO homopolymer and diblock polymers with excessively long polystyrene blocks. These findings suggest that the optimal chain length of the polystyrene block is crucial for maximizing electron mobility, thus offering valuable insights for designing high-performance PLED materials. This study was conducted on SAC105 (Sn-1wt.%Ag-0.5wt.%Cu) lead-free solder modified with Bi and Sb. The wetting, melting point, and mechanical properties were analysed with the addition of 1~5 wt.%Bi and 1~5 wt.%Sb for SAC105 base alloy. The wetting characteristics were assessed by wetting time (zero cross time, ZCT) obtained from wetting balance tests. The mechanical properties were analysed by tensile tests. Considering two factors (Bi, Sb), a three-level (0, 1, 2 wt.%) design of experiment (DOE) method array was applied for Taguchi optimization. The results indicated that the solder wetting increased as Bi content increased, while it decreased with Sb. The ZCT decreased with increasing Bi content up to 4 wt.%, while it increased proportionally to Sb content. The melting point, measured using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), showed that the melting point tended to decrease according to Bi increase, while it increases depending on the Sb content. Increase in Bi and Sb levels resulted in enhanced tensile strength in the mechanical properties tests, with Bi having a more noticeable impact. The Taguchi optimized conditions for the Bi and Sb studies were found to be 2 wt.%Bi and 2 wt.%Sb. This led to an optimal set of 0.9 s of wetting time, a 222.55 °C melting point, a 55 MPa tensile strength, and a 50% elongation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a recent breakthrough in the field of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, the first synthesis of a single-atom-thick gold lattice of goldene has been reported through an innovative wet chemical removal of Ti3C2 from the layered Ti3AuC2. Inspired by this advancement, in this communication and for the first time, a comprehensive first-principles investigation using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) calculations has been conducted to delve into the stability, electronic, mechanical and thermal properties of the single-layer and free-standing goldene. The presented results confirm thermal stability at 700 K as well as remarkable dynamical stability of the stress-free and strained goldene monolayer. At the ground state, the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the goldene monolayer are predicted to be over 226 and 12 GPa, respectively. Through validated MLIP-based molecular dynamics calculations, it is found that at room temperature, the goldene nanosheet can exhibit anisotropic tensile strength over 9 GPa and a low lattice thermal conductivity around 10 ± 2 W/(m.K), respectively. We finally show that the native metallic nature of the goldene monolayer stays intact under large tensile strains. The combined insights from DFT and MLIP-based results provide a comprehensive understanding of the stability, mechanical, thermal and electronic properties of goldene nanosheets. Ambient pressure drying (APD) of silica aerogels has emerged as an attractive method adapting to large-scale production. Spring-back is a unique phenomenon during APD of silica aerogels with volume expansion after its shrinkage under capillary force. We attribute the intense spring-back at elevated drying temperatures to a dense structure formed on the surface and the formation of positive internal pressure. Furthermore, an APD-assisted foaming method with an in situ introduction of NH4HCO3 was proposed. NH4HCO3 decomposing at drying temperatures hastened the emergence of positive pressure, thereby increasing the expansion volume. Compared to the previous method, the porosity of silica aerogel increased from 82.2% to 92.6%, and mesopore volume from 1.79 cm3 g−1 to 4.54 cm3 g−1. By adjusting the amount of the silicon source, silica aerogels prepared by the APD-assisted foaming method generated higher volume expansion and lower thermal conductivity. After calcination to remove undecomposed ammonium salts, the hydrophobic silica aerogel with a density of 0.112 g cm−3 reached a mesopore volume of 5.07 cm3 g−1 and a thermal conductivity of 18.9 mW m−1·K−1. This strategy not only improves the thermal insulation properties, but also offers a significant advancement in tailoring silica aerogels with specific porosity and mesopore volume for various applications. The manufacturing of orthodontic archwires made from NiTi alloy has undergone numerous changes from the second half of the last century to modern times. Initially, superelastic-active austenitic NiTi alloys were predominant, followed by thermodynamic-active martensitic NiTi alloys, and, finally, the most recent development was graded thermodynamic alloys. These advancements have been the subject of extensive investigation in numerous studies, as they necessitated a deeper understanding of their properties. Furthermore, it is imperative that we validate the information provided by manufacturers regarding these archwires through independent studies. This review evaluates existing studies on the subject with a specific focus on the Bio-active multi-force NiTi archwire, by examining its mechanical, thermal, and physicochemical properties before and after clinical use. The thermal properties, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Fe-18Mn-3Ti (wt%) were investigated, focusing on the effects of different heat-treatment processes. Results revealed that the 450 °C warm-rolling sample (450 WR) exhibited promising mechanical properties. Specifically, this sample displayed a yield strength of 988 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1052 MPa, and total elongation of 15.49%. Consequently, a favorable strength-ductility balance was achieved. The strain-hardening ability surpassed that of the cold rolling sample (CR). Microstructure analysis indicated the simultaneous occurrence of dynamic equilibrium between grain deformation and re-crystallization because of the co-influence of thermal and strain in the warm rolling process. This desirable mechanical property was attributed to the presence of a multi-phase (α-martensite, austenite, and ε-martensite) and heterogeneous microstructure. The improvement of ultimate tensile strength was based on grain refinement, grain co-deformation, and the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect in the early stage of plastic deformation (stage Ⅰ). This study investigates the impact of lignin on the durability and performance of polypropylene-based biocomposites (PP–flax and PP–pine) under environmental stresses such as UV radiation and moisture. The findings indicate that pine fibres, with their higher lignin content, are significantly more resistant to thermal degradation than flax fibres. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that lignin influences crystallinity and melting temperatures across the composites, with variations corresponding to fibre type. Acoustic emissions analysis revealed that increasing the lignin content in pine fibres effectively reduces surface microcracks under UV exposure. This study delineates a methodology for the preparation of new composites based on a photocurable urethane-acrylate resin, which has been modified with (3-thiopropyl)polysilsesquioxane (SSQ-SH). The organosilicon compound combines fully enclosed cage structures and incompletely condensed silanols (a mixture of random structures) obtained through the hydrolytic condensation of (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. This process involves a thiol-ene "click" reaction between SSQ-SH and a commercially available resin (Ebecryl 1271®) in the presence of the photoinitiator DMPA, resulting in composites with significantly changed thermal properties. Various tests were conducted, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transmittance infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (Photo-DSC), and photoreological measurement mechanical property, and water contact angle (WCA) tests. The modification of resin with SSQ-SH increased the temperature of 1% and 5% mass loss compared to the reference (for 50 wt% SSQ-SH, T5% was 310.8 °C, an increase of 20.4 °C). A composition containing 50 wt% of SSQ-SH crosslinked faster than the reference resin, a phenomenon confirmed by photorheological tests. In the realm of thermal interface materials (TIMs), high thermal conductivity and low density are key for effective thermal management and are particularly vital due to the growing compactness and lightweight nature of electronic devices. Efficient directional arrangement is a key control strategy to significantly improve thermal conductivity and comprehensive properties of thermal interface materials. In the present work, drawing inspiration from natural leaf and branch structures, a simple-to-implement approach for fabricating oriented thermal conductivity composites is introduced. Utilizing carbon fibers (CFs), known for their ultra-high thermal conductivity, as branches, this design ensures robust thermal conduction channels. Concurrently, boron nitride (BN) platelets, characterized by their substantial in-plane thermal conductivity, act as leaves. These components not only support the branches but also serve as junctions in the thermal conduction network. Remarkably, the composite achieves a thermal conductivity of 11.08 W/(m·K) with just an 11.1 wt% CF content and a 1.86 g/cm3 density. This study expands the methodologies for achieving highly oriented configurations of fibrous and flake materials, which provides a new design idea for preparing high-thermal conductivity and low-density thermal interface materials. Zirconium carbide (ZrC) ceramics have a high melting point, low neutron absorption cross section, and excellent resistance to the impact of fission products and are considered to be one of the best candidate materials for fourth-generation nuclear energy systems. ZrC ceramics with a high relative density of 99.1% were successfully prepared via pressureless sintering using a small amount of MoSi2 as an additive. The influence of the MoSi2 content on the densification behavior, microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of ZrC ceramics was systematically investigated. The results show that the densification of ZrC was significantly enhanced by the introduction of MoSi2 due to the formation of a liquid phase during sintering. In addition, the ZrC grains were refined due to the pinning effect of the generated silicon carbide. The flexural strength and Vickers hardness of ZrC ceramics with 2.5 vol% MoSi2 sintered at 1850 °C were 408 ± 12 MPa and 17.1 GPa, respectively, which were approximately 30% and 10% higher compared to the samples without the addition of MoSi2. In the realm of high-tech materials and energy applications, accurately measuring the transient heat flow at media boundaries and the internal thermal conductivity of materials in harsh heat exchange environments poses a significant challenge when using conventional direct measurement methods. Consequently, the study of photothermal parameter reconstruction in translucent media, which relies on indirect measurement techniques, has crucial practical value. Current research on reconstructing photothermal properties within participating media typically focuses on single-objective or time-invariant properties. There is a pressing need to develop effective methods for the simultaneous reconstruction of time-varying thermal flow fields and internal thermal conductivity at the boundaries of participating media. This paper introduces a computational model based on the numerical simulation theory of internal heat transfer systems in participating media, stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithms, and Kalman filter technology. The model aims to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of various thermal parameters within the target medium. Our results demonstrate that under varying levels of measurement noise, the inversion results for different target parameters exhibit slight oscillations around the true values, leading to a reduction in reconstruction accuracy. This research study focused on the effect of adding boric acid to epoxy resin in order to obtain a composite material with improved properties and performance. To this end, a fine powder of boric acid (H3BO3) was introduced into epoxy resin in different amounts, i.e., 0.5 g, 1.0 g, and 1.5 g. As the matrix of the epoxy composites, styrene-modified epoxy resin based on bisphenol A (BPA) (Epidian 53) was used. It was cross-linked with two types of curing agents, i.e., an amine (ET) and a polyamide (PAC). The mechanical properties of the obtained epoxy composites (in terms of compressive strength, compressive modulus, and compressive strain) were determined at room temperature in order to assess the effect of the addition of boron acid and of the type of curing agent employed to cure the epoxy on these characteristics. Calorimetric measurements were made to highlight any changes in the glass transition temperature (Tg) as a result of the addition of boric acid to epoxy resin. Finally, flammability tests were performed on both Epidian 53/PAC and Epidian 53/ET epoxy composites to analyze their fire behavior and consequently establish the effectiveness of the selected additive as a flame retardant. Woven flax-carbon hybrid polyamide biocomposites offer a blend of carbon fibers' mechanical strength and flax's environmental advantages, potentially developing material applications. This study investigated their thermal behavior, degradation kinetics, and durability to water uptake and relative humidity exposure and compared them with pure flax and carbon composites with the same matrix. The hybrid composite exhibited intermediate water/moisture absorption levels between pure flax and carbon composites, with 7.2% water absorption and 3.5% moisture absorption. It also displayed comparable thermal degradation resistance to the carbon composite, effectively maintaining its weight up to 300 °C. Further analysis revealed that the hybrid composite exhibited a decomposition energy of 268 kJ/mol, slightly lower than the carbon composite's value of 288.5 kJ/mol, indicating similar thermal stability. The dynamic stress–strain state and fracture of a steel main gas pipe section between supports with a straight-through crack was analyzed with consideration of the temperature effect on changes in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. The numerical solution of the problem was implemented in the ANSYS-19.2/Explicit Dynamics software package. The process of fracture in a section of the gas pipeline "Beineu–Bozoy–Shymkent" with a linear crack in the temperature range of −40 °C to +50 °C at the operating pressure of 7.5 MPa and critical pressure equal to 9.8 MPa was considered. As a result, it was found that at the initial growth of the internal pressure from working pressure to critical pressure, the length of the crack doubled. At the same time, the process had a local characteristic. Further development of the crack had the nature of avalanche fracture and depended on the temperature of the steel pipeline. With increasing temperature, there was also an increase in the length of the crack at the avalanche fracture. Thus, at a temperature of 40 °C, the crack lengthened 67.75-fold; at a temperature of −10 °C, the crack lengthened 68-fold; at a temperature of +20 °C, the crack lengthened 68.25-fold; and at a temperature of +50 °C, the crack lengthened 68.5-fold. In this work, this difference was 75% of the initial crack length. This fact will be used for further development of the technique of strengthening damaged pipe sections using bandages. The properties of recycled post-consumer rigid polyethylene packaging waste were studied, using sorted waste washed in the laboratory with water alone and with added detergent, and compared with large-scale high-intensity washed flakes. The washed flakes were compounded using three different temperature profiles in a twin-screw extruder and then injection molded. A higher compounding temperature reduced the thermo-oxidative stability, the average molecular mass, and the viscosity of the samples. Rheological measurements suggested that changes in chain branching occurred at different compounding temperatures. The strength and the elongation at break were also influenced by the compounding temperature in both the molten and solid states. Detergent washing maintained the thermo-oxidative stability in contrast to washing with water. The large-scale washed samples had a relatively high thermo-oxidative stability, a higher melt elasticity, and a lower elongation at break in both the molten and solid states than the laboratory-scale washed samples. The thermal properties, melt elasticity, Young's modulus, yield stress, and yield strain of the samples were not, however, significantly affected by either the compounding temperature or the washing medium and intensity. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo, as well as interlaminar hybrid composites reinforced with both bamboo and synthetic fibres in an epoxy matrix. Bamboo and glass, aramid, and carbon bidirectional fabrics were used with a bi-component epoxy matrix to fabricate the composite materials using the vacuum bagging process. The synthetic fabrics were placed on the outer layers, while the bamboo fabrics were used as the core of the hybrid composites. The developed composites were characterized and compared in terms of morphological, physical, and mechanical properties. Further, thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis was used to measure and compare the degradation temperature of the composites studied. Finally, a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed in order to examine the fracture surfaces of the specimens tested. It was found that the fibre hybridization technique significantly improved the general mechanical properties. TGA analysis showed an increase in the thermal stability of the composites obtained by incorporating the synthetic fibres, confirming the effect of hybridization and efficient fibre matrix interfacial adhesion. The results from this work showed that the use of synthetic fibre reinforcements can help to significantly improve the mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo fibre-reinforced composites. Building material manufacturers must support new production models that encourage the manufacture of more efficient and sustainable products. This includes thinking about savings in the use of raw materials, a contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings during their useful life, and a reduction in the generation and deposit of waste in landfills. In this research, an analysis of the thermal properties of gypsum composites added with plastic waste is carried out using the most common methods, the steady state method and the transient plane source method, and the effect of water saturation on these composites is tested. The results show an improvement in the thermal performance of the composites (values reduced with respect to the reference by 4–7%), despite their heterogeneity, as well as a variation in the measurements carried out, depending on the method used for the measurements (variation up to 10%). It is also found that the degree of humidity negatively affects the thermal conductivity coefficient but, on the contrary, this coefficient is not altered in the composites with plastic waste, due to their lower hygroscopicity. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed eco-plasters are a good alternative to traditional plasters, with which to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the current European directives on waste and circular economy. Nanothermites and high-energy explosives have significantly improved the performance of high-energy composites and have broad application prospects. Therefore, in this study, RDX/F2311/Fe2O3/Al composite hollow microspheres were successfully prepared utilizing the electrospray method using F2311 as a binder between components. The results show that the combustion time of the composite hollow microspheres is shortened from 2400 ms to 950 ms, the combustion process is more stable, and the energy release is more concentrated. The H50 of the composite hollow microspheres increased from 14.49 cm to 24.57 cm, the explosion percentage decreased from 84% to 72%, and the sensitivity of the composite samples decreased significantly. This is mainly the result of the combination of homogeneous composition and synergistic reactions. The combustion results show that F2311 as a binder affects the tightness of the contact between the components. By adjusting its content, the combustion time and the intensity of the combustion of the composite microspheres can be adjusted, which provides a feasible direction for its practical application. Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF)-based nanocomposites were fabricated with silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles by the in-situ polymerization method. The importance of this research work is to extend the usage of PEF-based nanocomposites with improved material properties. The PEF-Ag and PEF-TiO2 nanocomposites showed a significant improvement in color concentration, as determined by the color colorimeter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs revealed the appearance of small aggregates on the surface of nanocomposites. According to crystallinity investigations, neat PEF and nanocomposites exhibit crystalline fraction between 0–6%, whereas annealed samples showed a degree of crystallinity value above 25%. Combining the structural and molecular dynamics observations from broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) measurements found strong interactions between polymer chains and nanoparticles. Contact angle results exhibited a decrease in the wetting angle of nanocomposites compared to neat PEF. Finally, antimicrobial studies have been conducted, reporting a significant rise in inhibition of over 15% for both nanocomposite films against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. From the overall results, the synthesized PEF-based nanocomposites with enhanced thermal and antimicrobial properties may be optimized and utilized for the secondary packaging (unintended food-contact) materials. The optimization of structure and thermal properties in 3D-printed insulation materials remains an underexplored area in the literature. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of 3D printing on the thermal properties of manufactured cellular composites. The materials studied were closed-cell foams with a complex cell structure based on the Voronoi cell model, manufactured using incremental technology (3D printing). The influence of the cellular structure of the composite, the type of material used, and the number of layers in the composite structure on its thermal properties, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal resistance, and coefficient of heat transfer, was analyzed. Samples of different types of thermosetting resins, characterized by different values of emissivity coefficient, were analyzed. It was shown that both the type of material, the number of layers of the composite, and the number of pores in its structure significantly affect its thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity and permeability depended on the number of layers and decreased up to 30% as the number of layers increased from one to four, while thermal resistance increased to 35%. The results indicate that material structure is key in regulating thermal conduction. Controlling the number of cells in a given volume of composite (and thus the size of the air cells) and the number of layers in the composite can be an effective tool in designing materials with high insulation performance. Among the prototype composites produced, the best thermal performance was that of the metalized four-layer cellular composites (λ = 0.035 ± 0.002 W/m·K, Rc = 1.15 ± 0.02 K·m2/W, U = 0.76 ± 0.01 W/m2·K). Not only can perovskite solar cells be exposed to high temperatures, up to 80 °C, depending on the operating environment, but absorbed energy is lost as heat, so it is important to have thermal stability for commercialization. However, in the case of the recently reported p-i-n structure solar cell, most of the electron and hole transport layers are composed of organic materials vulnerable to heat transfer, so the light absorption layer may be continuously exposed to high temperatures when the solar cell is operated. In this study, we attempted to improve the thermal conductivity of the electron transport layer using phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) containing zinc oxide (ZnO). As a result, the thermal conductivity was improved by more than 7.4% and 23.5% by adding 6.57vol% and 22.38vol% of ZnO to PCBM, respectively. In addition, the insertion of ZnO resulted in changes in the electron transport behavior and energy level of the electron transport layer. As a result, it was confirmed that not only could the temperature stability of the perovskite thin film be improved, but the efficiency of the solar cell could also be improved from 14.12% to 17.97%. This study aims to develop suitable formulations of geopolymer concrete (GPC) by varying the percentages of the geopolymer with aggregates and evaluating the performances in thermal and mechanical properties of palm kernel shell ash (PKSA)-GPC compared to rice husk ash (RHA)-GPC and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC). Preliminary tests were conducted to select the best mix design ratios before casting the specimens. Then, the performance of the PKSA-GPC, RHA-GPC and OPCC specimens was evaluated based on their thermal performance and drying shrinkage. The mix designs of PKSA-GPC 70:30, PKSA-GPC 60:40, PKSA-GPC 50:50 and PKSA-GPC 66.6:33.3 were found to produce an acceptable consistency, rheological and thixotropic behaviour for the development of the GPC. PKSA-GPC showed a better thermal performance than the RHA-GPC and OPCC due to their strong and dense intumescent layers and slow temperature increment upon exposure to a high flame temperature from ambient temperature to 169 °C. The low molar ratio of the Si/Al present in the PKSA-GPC created a thermally stable intumescent layer. In the drying shrinkage test, PKSA-GPC 60:40 and RHA-GPC 60:40 shared an equal drying shrinkage performance (5.040%) compared to the OPCC (8.996%). It was observed that microcrack formation could significantly contribute to the high shrinkage in the PKSA-GPC 50:50 and RHA-GPC 70:30 specimens. The findings of this study show that PKSA could be incorporated into GPC as a fire-retardant material due to its capability of prolonging the spread of fire upon ignition and acting as an alternative to the conventional OPCC. This study focuses on examining the influence of bast fibers on the flammability and thermal properties of the polylactide matrix (PLA). For this purpose, Urtica dioica and Vitis vinifera fibers were subjected to two types of modifications: mercerization in NaOH solution (M1 route) and encapsulation in an organic PLA solution (M2 route). In a further step, PLA composites containing 5, 10, and 15 wt% of unmodified and chemically treated fibers were obtained. The results of the tests show that only biocomposites containing mercerized fibers had a nearly 20% reduced flammability compared to that of PLA. Moreover, the biofiller obtained in this way belongs to the group of flame retardants that generate char residue during combustion, which was also confirmed by TGA tests. The M2 modification route allowed to achieve higher mass viscosity than the addition of unmodified and M1-modified fibers. The reason is that fibers additionally encapsulated in a polymer layer impede the mobility of the chain segments. The paper presents the results of research on hybrid composites made of unsaturated polyester resin based on post-consumer recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate). The polymeric materials were reinforced with quartz flour, which is a common inorganic mineral filler. An environmentally friendly cobalt polymer solution was used to cure the polyester matrix. The results showed the quantitative influence of the quartz filler on the thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of the quartz–polyester composites. The fight against climate change has delineated new objectives, among which one of the most crucial is the replacement of high-energy-intensity materials in the construction sector with more sustainable and thermally efficient alternatives to reduce indirect emissions. Consequently, the thermal properties of materials assume fundamental importance. In this regard, the large-scale use of earth represents a promising option, not only due to its widespread availability but especially for its minimal embodied energy. However, to enhance its durability, it is necessary to stabilize the mixtures of raw materials. This study analyzes experimental systems based on earth stabilized with bio-based polymers to evaluate their thermal properties and how these vary depending on the selected mix-design. The experimental measurements showed thermal properties comparable to conventional materials. As expected, thermal conductivity increases when porosity decreases. The minimum value is equal to 0.216 W/m·K vs. a porosity of 43.5%, while the maximum is 0.507 W/m·K vs. a porosity of 33.2%. However, the data obtained for individual systems may vary depending on the topological characteristics, which were analyzed through a model for granular materials. One crucial property of concrete, particularly in construction, is its thermal conductivity, which impacts heat transfer through conduction. For example, reducing the thermal conductivity of concrete can lead to energy savings in buildings. Various techniques exist for measuring the thermal conductivity of materials, but there is limited discussion in the literature about suitable methods for concrete. In this study, the transient line source method is employed to evaluate the thermal conductivity of concrete samples with natural and synthetic fibers after 7 and 28 days of curing. The results indicate that concrete with hemp fiber generally exhibits higher thermal conductivity values, increasing by 48% after 28 days of curing, while synthetic fibers have a minimal effect. In conclusion, this research opens the door to using natural alternatives like hemp fiber to improve concrete's thermal properties, providing alternatives for thermo-active foundations and geothermal energy piles which require high thermal conductivities. Rigid pavements at military airfields experience surface deterioration within 6–18 months of construction. The cause of this degradation is mainly due to combined exposure to repeated heat shocks from jet engine exhaust and spilled aviation oils (hydrocarbons). Surface degradation occurs in the form of disintegration of aggregates and cement paste into small pieces that pose severe risks of physical injury to maintenance crews or damage to an aircraft engine. Since coarse aggregates typically occupy 60–80% of the concrete volume, aggregates' thermal properties and microstructure should play a crucial role in the degrading mechanism. At high temperatures, concrete with lightweight aggregates is reported to have better performance compared to concrete with normal-weight aggregate. Thus, the present study carried out a detailed investigation of the mechanical and thermal performance of lightweight aggregate concrete exposed to the combined effects of high temperatures and hydrocarbon oils simultaneously. To replicate harsh airfield operating conditions, standard-sized concrete cylinders were exposed to elevated temperatures using an electric oven. Additionally, a mixture of equal parts of aircraft engine oil, hydraulic oil, and kerosene was applied before each exposure to high temperatures. To identify the resistance of different concrete with various lightweight coarse aggregates, pumice, perlite, lytag (sintered fly ash), and crushed brick were used as lightweight coarse aggregates in concrete. Also, basalt aggregate concrete was used as a reference. After curing, cylinders were tested for the ultimate strength. Later, after every 20 cyclic exposures, three cylinders from each aggregate type were tested for residual comprehensive strength, thermal, chemical, and microstructural (SEM) properties. Overall, concrete with crushed brick aggregate and lytag used in this study showed superior resistance to the simulated airfield conditions. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights to select an appropriate coarse aggregate type for military airfield pavement construction, aiming to effectively minimize surface spalling. The article describes new silicone self-adhesive adhesives modified with the addition of talc. The obtained self-adhesive materials were characterized to determine their adhesive properties (adhesion, cohesion, and adhesion) and functional properties (pot life of the composition, shrinkage, and thermal properties of adhesives). Novel materials exhibited high thermal resistance above 225 °C while maintaining or slightly reducing other values (adhesion, cohesion, shrinkage, and tack). The purpose of this study was to model the thermal insulating properties in an exemplary multi-layer layup of space suits utilizing computer simulation techniques and physics and mathematical models. The main system responsible for thermal insulation is the Thermal Micrometeoroid Garment (TMG) material layup. Its structure consists of eight layers with different functions. The utilized textile materials are Rip-Stop-type fabrics, strengthened with the addition of a stronger fiber at fixed intervals. The state variable in thermal problems is the temperature field inside the analyzed TMG. The results obtained from the computer simulation were compared to verification calculations from the mathematical model, which allowed for an assessment of the models' quality and the obtained results. Two numerical models were analyzed in Ansys Workbench software. This enabled an assessment of the model's quality and the possible discrepancies. The modeling of the structure was carried out using the Finite Element Method. Measuring the size distribution and temperature of high-temperature dispersed particles, particularly in-flame soot, holds paramount importance across various industries. Laser-induced incandescence (LII) stands out as a potent non-contact diagnostic technology for in-flame soot, although its effectiveness is hindered by uncertainties associated with pre-determined thermal properties. To tackle this challenge, our study proposes a multi-parameter inversion strategy—simultaneous inversion of particle size distribution, thermal accommodation coefficient, and initial temperature of in-flame soot aggregates using time-resolved LII signals. Analyzing the responses of different heat transfer sub-models to temperature rise demonstrates the necessity of incorporating sublimation and thermionic emission for accurately reproducing LII signals of high-temperature dispersed particles. Consequently, we selected a particular LII model for the multi-parameter inversion strategy. Our research reveals that LII-based particle sizing is sensitive to biases in the initial temperature of particles (equivalent to the flame temperature), underscoring the need for the proposed multi-parameter inversion strategy. Numerical results obtained at two typical flame temperatures, 1100 K and 1700 K, illustrate that selecting an appropriate laser fluence enables the simultaneous inversion of particle size distribution, thermal accommodation coefficient, and initial particle temperatures of soot aggregates with high accuracy and confidence using the LII technique. The article discusses the effect of additives of waste mineral wool fibers on geopolymer binder. This is an important study in terms of the possibility of recycling mineral wool waste. The paper describes an effective method for pulverizing the wool and the methodology for forming geopolymer samples, labeled G1 for glass-wool-based geopolymer and G2 for stone-wool-based geopolymer. The compressive and flexural strengths and thermal conductivity coefficient of the geopolymer with the addition of mineral fibers were determined. The key element of the article is to verify whether the addition of mineral wool fibers positively affects the properties of the geopolymer. The results obtained prove that the addition of fibers significantly improves the flexural strength. For the G1 formulation, the ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength is 18.7%. However, for G2 samples, an even better ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength values of 26.3% was obtained. The average thermal conductivity coefficient obtained was 1.053 W/(m·K) for the G1 series samples and 0.953 W/(m·K) for the G2 series samples. The conclusions obtained show a correlation between the porosity and compressive strength and thermal conductivity coefficient. The extensively evaluated and consistent thermodynamic database, the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database—Thermochemical (MSTDB-TC), was used along with additional thermodynamic values from other sources as examples of ways to examine molten salt reactor (MSR) fuel behavior. Relative stability with respect to halide potential and temperature for likely fuel and fission product components were mapped in Ellingham diagrams for the chloride and fluoride systems. The Ellingham diagrams provide a rich, visual means for identifying halide-forming components in proposed fuel/solvent salt systems. Thermochemical models and values from MSTDB-TC and ancillary sources were used in global equilibrium calculations to provide compositions for a close analysis of the behavior of a possible Molten Chloride Salt Fast Reactor and a Molten Salt Reactor Experiment-type system at high burnup (100 GWd/t). Modelling effective thermal properties is crucial for optimizing the thermal performance of materials such as new green insulating fibrous media. In this study, a numerical model is proposed to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of these materials. The fibers are considered to be non-overlapping and randomly oriented in space. The numerical model is based on the finite element method. Particular attention is paid to the accuracy of the results and the influence of the choice of the representative elementary volume (REV) for calculation (cubic or rectangular parallelepiped slice). The calculated effective thermal conductivity of fibrous media under different boundary conditions is also investigated. A set of usual mixed boundary conditions is considered, alongside the uniform temperature gradient conditions. The REV rectangular slice and uniform temperature gradient boundary conditions provide a more accurate estimate of the effective thermal conductivity and are therefore recommended for use in place of the usual cubic representative elementary volume and the usual mixed boundary conditions. This robust model represents a principal novelty of the work. The results are compared with experimental and analytical data previously obtained in the literature for juncus maritimus fibrous media, for different fiber volume fractions, with small relative deviations of 7%. Analytical laws are generally based on simplified assumptions such as infinitely long fibers, and may neglect heat transfer between different phases. The effect of thermal properties on the thermal behavior of a steel billet was investigated during the heating process to understand each effect and to provide process engineers with sufficient data to choose the optimal design conditions in reheating the furnace for hot rolling. Carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel (STS) were compared based on numerical simulations owing to the completely different thermal properties of these two steels: carbon steel having a phase transformation with a relatively high thermal conductivity and STS having no phase transformation with a relatively low thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity affected the thermal behavior of the billet in the initial stage of heating owing to the high temperature difference between the surface of the billet and the gas in the furnace, i.e., the high Biot number. Accordingly, a non-firing zone and/or a preheating zone with a low gas temperature are necessary for high-alloyed steels including STS because the thermal conductivity of these steels is relatively low. The phase transformation of the carbon steels needs to occur in the primary heating zone, and this zone needs to have a relatively low gas temperature to reduce the temperature deviation or thermal stress in the billet. The heating pattern of the carbon steels and STSs in the reheating furnace should be designed differently considering the thermal conductivity and latent heat by the phase transformation of steels to obtain a high heating quality for the billet.
