Honeycomb sandwich panels are utilized in many industrial applications due to their high bending resistance relative to their weight. Defects between the core and the facesheet compromise their integrity and efficiency due to the inability to transfer loads. The material system studied in the present paper is a unidirectional carbon fiber composite facesheet with a honeycomb core with a variety of defects at the interface between the two material systems. Current nondestructive techniques focus on defect detectability, whereas the presented method uses high-frequency ultrasound testing (UT) to detect and quantify the defect geometry and defect type. Testing is performed using two approaches, a laboratory scale immersion tank and a novel portable UT system, both of which utilize only single-side access to the part. Coupons are presented with defects spanning from 5 to 40 mm in diameter, whereas defects in the range of 15–25 mm and smaller are considered below the detectability limits of existing inspection methods. Defect types studied include missing adhesive, unintentional foreign objects that occur during the manufacturing process, damaged core, and removed core sections. An algorithm is presented to quantify the defect perimeter. The provided results demonstrate successful defect detection, with an average defect diameter error of 0.6 mm across all coupons studied in the immersion system and 1.1 mm for the portable system. The best accuracy comes from the missing adhesive coupons, with an average error of 0.3 mm. Conversely, the worst results come from the missing or damaged honeycomb coupons, with an error average of 0.7 mm, well below the standard detectability levels of 15–25 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elevator industry is constantly expanding creating an increased demand for the integration of high technological tools to increase elevator efficiency and safety. Towards this direction, Additive Manufacturing (AM), and especially metal AM, is one of the technologies that could offer numerous competitive advantages in the production of industrial parts, such as integration of complex geometry, high manufacturability of high-strength metal alloys, etc. In this context, the present study has 3D designed, 3D printing manufactured, and evaluated novel bioinspired structures for elevator safety gear friction pads with the aim of enhancing their dynamic friction performance and eliminating the undesired behavior properties observed in conventional pads. Four different friction pads with embedded bioinspired surface lattice structures were formed on the template of the friction surface of the conventional pads and 3D printed by the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process utilizing tool steel H13 powder as feedstock material. Each safety gear friction pad underwent tribological tests to evaluate its dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF). The results indicated that pads with a high contact surface area, such as those with car-tire-like and extended honeycomb structures, exhibit high CoF of 0.549 and 0.459, respectively. Based on the acquired CoFs, Finite Element Models (FEM) were developed to access the performance of braking pads under realistic operation conditions, highlighting the lower stress concentration for the aforementioned designs. Honeycomb structures have attracted much attention for their excellent characteristics of reducing vibration and noise in recent years. In this study, through band analysis of different ligament structures, we aim to optimize the design of a steel structure that can isolate most of the noise in the 1500–5000 Hz range. The present study examines several different chiral structures. We calculate the band gaps of chiral structures under different geometric configurations and identify the variations in band gaps with geometric layouts. It is found that compared to other chiral structures, the triligaments chiral structure exhibits excellent band gap characteristics. The calculation results demonstrate that enhancing axial symmetry while filling central nodes can effectively enhance the structure's band gap properties. Frequency–response functions of different lattice structures are computed, and the results align with the calculations of band structures. This study then analyzes the influence of the number of periods on the magnitude of vibration attenuation, revealing that under the same number of periods, the wider the band gap of the structure, the greater the vibration attenuation. Both the triligaments chiral structure and the vertical triligaments structure possess ideal band gap widths, effectively suppressing wave propagation. Subsequently, harmonic response analyses and transient wave calculations further validate the accuracy of the band structure and frequency–response curve calculations. Additive manufacturing enables the production of lattice structures, which have been proven to be a superior class of lightweight mechanical metamaterials whose specific stiffness can reach the theoretical limit of the upper Hashin–Shtrikman bound for isotropic cellular materials. To achieve isotropy, complex structures are required, which can be challenging in powder bed additive manufacturing, especially with regard to subsequent powder removal. The present study focuses on the Finite Element Method simulation of 2.5D anisotropic plate lattice metamaterials and the investigation of their lightweight potential. The intentional use of anisotropic structures allows the production of a cell architecture that is easily manufacturable via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) while also enabling straightforward optimization for specific load cases. The work demonstrates that the considered anisotropic plate lattices exhibit high weight-specific stiffnesses, superior to those of honeycomb structures, and, simultaneously, a good de-powdering capability. A significant increase in stiffness and the associated surpassing of the upper Hashin–Shtrikman bound due to anisotropy is achievable by optimizing wall thicknesses depending on specific load cases. A stability analysis reveals that, in all lattice structures, plastic deformation is initiated before linear buckling occurs. An analysis of stress concentrations indicates that the introduction of radii at the plate intersections reduces stress peaks and simultaneously increases the weight-specific stiffnesses and thus the lightweight potential. The rapid development of additive manufacturing (AM) has facilitated the creation of bionic lightweight, energy-absorbing structures, enabling the implementation of more sophisticated internal structural designs. For protective structures, the utilization of artificially controlled deformation patterns can effectively reduce uncertainties arising from random structural damage and enhance deformation stability. This paper proposed a bionic corrugated lightweight honeycomb structure with controllable deformation. The force on the onset state of deformation of the overall structure was investigated, and the possibility of controlled deformation in the homogeneous structure was compared with that in the corrugated structure. The corrugated structures exhibited a second load-bearing capacity wave peak, with the load-bearing capacity reaching 60.7% to 117.29% of the first load-bearing peak. The damage morphology of the corrugated structure still maintained relative integrity. In terms of energy absorption capacity, the corrugated lightweight structure has a much stronger energy absorption capacity than the homogeneous structure due to the second peak of the load carrying capacity. The findings of this study suggested that the combination of geometric customization and longitudinal corrugation through additive manufacturing offers a promising approach for the development of high-performance energy-absorbing structures. A modified 3D re-entrant honeycomb is designed and fabricated utilizing Laser Cladding Deposition (LCD) technology, the mechanical properties of which are systematically investigated by experimental and finite element (FE) methods. Firstly, the influences of honeycomb angle on localized deformation and the response of force are studied by an experiment. Experimental results reveal that the honeycomb angles have a significant effect on deformation and force. Secondly, a series of numerical studies are conducted to analyze stress characteristics and energy absorption under different angles (α) and velocities (v). It is evident that two variables play an important role in stress and energy. Thirdly, response surface methodology (RSM) and the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) are implemented with high precision to solve multi-objective optimization. Finally, the final compromise solution is determined based on the fitness function, with an angle of 49.23° and an impact velocity of 16.40 m/s. Through simulation verification, the errors of energy absorption (EA) and peak crush stress (PCS) are 9.26% and 0.4%, respectively. The findings of this study offer valuable design guidance for selecting the optimal design parameters under the same mass conditions to effectively enhance the performance of the honeycomb. Nomex honeycomb composites (NHCs) are commonly used in various industrial sectors such as aerospace and automotive sectors due to their excellent material properties. However, when machining this type of structure, problems can arise due to significant cutting forces and unwanted cell vibrations. In order to remedy these shortcomings, this study proposes to integrate RUM (rotary ultrasonic machining) technology, which consists of applying ultrasonic vibrations along the axis of rotation of the cutter. To fully understand the milling process by ultrasonic vibrations of the NHC structure, a 3D numerical finite element model is developed using Abaqus/Explicit software. The results of the comparative analysis between the components of the simulated cutting forces and those from the experiment indicate a close agreement between the developed model and the experimental results. Based on the developed numerical model, this study comprehensively analyzes the influence of the ultrasonic vibration amplitude on various aspects, such as stress distribution in the cutting zone, chip size, the quality of the machined surface and the components of the cutting force. Ultimately, the results demonstrate that the application of ultrasonic vibrations leads to a reduction of up to 50% in the components of the cutting force, as well as an improvement in the quality of the machined surface and a reduction in the size of chips. The dynamic mechanical behavior and cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels, which are extensively employed in product cushioning packaging due to their exceptional energy absorption capabilities, were examined using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Several factors, such as maximum acceleration–static stress, cushioning coefficient–static stress, and other curves, were analyzed under various impact conditions. The simulated stress–strain, deformation modes, cushioning coefficients, and other parameters demonstrate consistency with the experimental results. The acceleration, maximum compression, and cushioning coefficient obtained from the experiment and simulation calculation were 30.68 g, 15.44 mm, and 2.65, and 31.96 g, 14.91 mm, and 2.79, respectively. The results indicate that all error values were less than 5%, confirming the precision and reliability of the model. Furthermore, the model was utilized to simulate and predict the cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels with different cell structures and paper thicknesses. In order to improve the impact resistance of sandwich panels under low-velocity impact, the lotus leaf vein is selected as a biological prototype to design a bio-inspired honeycomb (BIH) sandwich panel. ABAQUS is used to establish and effectively verify the finite element (FE) model of the BIH sandwich panel. To systematically compare and study the mechanical properties of BIH and conventional hexagonal honeycomb sandwich panels under low-velocity impact, the maximum displacement of face-sheets, the deformation mode, the plastic energy consumption and the dynamic response curve of the impact end are presented. At the same time, the performance differences between them are revealed from the perspective of an energy absorption mechanism. Furthermore, the influence of the circumscribed circle diameter ratio of the BIH trunk to branch (γ), the thickness ratio of the trunk to branch (K) and the impact angle (θ) on impact resistance is studied. Finally, the BIH sandwich panel is further optimized by using the response surface method. It can be concluded that, compared to conventional hexagonal honeycomb sandwich panels, the addition of walls in the BIH sandwich panel reduces the maximum deformation of the rear face-sheet by 10.29% and increases plastic energy consumption by 8.02%. The article presents continued considerations presented in a prior publication on the development of a model for calculating the bending stiffness BS of cellular honeycomb paperboards, applying the strength properties of paper raw materials used for the production of paperboard and the geometric parameters of cellular board. The results of BS calculations obtained by using the analytical model presented in the prior publication were significantly overestimated in relation to the value obtained by measurements. The calculation error in relation to the measurement value for the tested group of paperboards in the case of bending stiffness in the machine direction MD was within the range from 23% to 116%, and the average error was 65%, while in the cross direction CD, it was within the range from 2% to 54%, and the average error was 31%. The calculation model proposed in this work based on the physical properties of cellular paperboard reduces the error values for bending stiffness in both the machine and cross directions. The value of the average error for both main directions in the paperboard plane was 10%. The method enables more accurate determination of BS in the machine direction MD and in the cross direction CD at the paperboard design stage. In order to validate the proposed analytical model, the calculation results were compared with the results of BS laboratory measurements performed using the four-point bending method and, in order to expand the group of tested paperboards, with the measurement results presented in the prior article for cardboards with different raw material composition and different geometric parameters. This paper presents an innovative method of constructing energy absorbers, whose primary function is to effectively transform kinetic energy into strain energy in events with high deformation rates. Hybrid specimens are proposed considering thin-walled windowed metallic tubes filled with 3D-printed hexagonal honeycombs made of PET-G and ABS thermoplastic. The patterned windows dimensions vary from 20 × 20, 20 × 30, 15 × 20 and 15 × 30 mm2. Although using polymers in engineering and thin-walled sections is not new, their combination has not been explored in this type of structure designed to withstand impacts. Specimens resist out-of-plane quasi-static axial loading, and test results are analyzed, demonstrating that polymer core gives the samples better performance parameters than unfilled samples regarding energy absorption (Ea), load rate (LR), and structural effectiveness (η). An optimization procedure using specialized software was applied to evaluate experimental results, which led to identifying the optimal window geometry (16.4 × 20 mm2, in case) and polymer to be used (ABS). The optimized sample was constructed and tested for axial compression to validate the optimization outcomes. This analysis investigated the impact wave response and propagation on a composite sandwich shell when subjected to a low-velocity external shock, considering hygrothermal effects. The sandwich shell was crafted using face layers composed of functional gradient metal–ceramic matrix material and a core layer reinforced with negative Poisson's honeycomb. The honeycomb layer consisted of a combination of viscoelastic polymer material and elastic material. The equivalent parameters for the functional gradient material in the face layers were determined using the Mori–Tanaka and Voigt models, and the parameters for the negative Poisson's ratio honeycomb reinforcement core layer were obtained through Gibson's unit cell model. Parameters relevant to a low-velocity impact were derived using a modified Hertz contact law. The internal deformations, strains, and stress of the composite sandwich shell were described based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. The dynamic equilibrium equations were established using Hamilton's principle, and the Galerkin method along with the Newmark direct integration scheme was employed to calculate the shell's response to impact. The validity of the analysis was confirmed through a comparison with published literature. This investigation showed that a multilayer negative Poisson's ratio viscoelastic polymer material honeycomb-cored structure can dissipate impact wave energy swiftly and suppress shock effectively. Graphene, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope with a honeycomb structure, has emerged as a material of immense interest in diverse scientific and technical domains. It is mainly produced from graphite by mechanical, chemical and electrochemical exfoliation. As renewable energy and source utilization increase, including bioenergy from forest and woody residues, processed, among other methods, by pyrolysis treatment, it can be expected that biochar production will increase too. Thus, its useful applications, particularly in obtaining high-added-value products, need to be fully explored. This study aims at presenting a comprehensive analysis derived from experimental data, offering insights into the potential of biomass pyrolysis-derived biochar as a versatile precursor for the controlled synthesis of graphene and its derivatives. This approach comprehended the highest energy output and lowest negative environmental footprint, including the minimization of both toxic gas emissions during processing and heavy metals' presence in the feedstock, toward obtaining biochar suitable to be modified, employing the Hummers and intercalation with persulfate salts methods, aiming at deriving graphene-like materials. Material characterization has revealed that besides morphology and structural features of the original wooden biomass, graphitized structures are present as well, which is proven clearly by Raman and XPS analyses. Composite radomes are usually located in the nose of aircraft and are important structural components that protect radar antenna. The finite element model of a radome structure is developed and analyzed in this article. Single-objective deterministic and reliability optimization models based on the minimum total mass of the radome structure were established, and the layer thickness of each part of the honeycomb sandwich radome structure was considered a design variable. A multi-objective deterministic and reliability optimization model for a radome structure with a minimum total mass and maximum buckling critical load was established, and a particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to solve the problem. Graphene aerogels are of high interest nowadays since they have ultralow density, rich porosity, high deformability, and good adsorption. In the present work, three different morphologies of graphene aerogels with a honeycomb-like structure are considered. The strength and deformation behavior of these graphene honeycomb structures are studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The effect of structural morphology on the stability of graphene aerogel is discussed. It is shown that structural changes significantly depend on the structural morphology and the loading direction. The deformation of the re-entrant honeycomb is similar to the deformation of a conventional honeycomb due to the opening of the honeycomb cells. At the first deformation stage, no stress increase is observed due to the structural transformation. Further, stress concentration on the junctions of the honeycomb structure and over the walls occurs. The addition of carbon nanotubes and graphene flakes into the cells of graphene aerogel does not result in a strength increase. The mechanisms of weakening are analyzed in detail. The obtained results further contribute to the understanding of the microscopic deformation mechanisms of graphene aerogels and their design for various applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is conducted on glass fiber-reinforced composite honeycomb sandwich structures by introducing delamination damage through low-velocity impact tests, establishing a three-dimensional progressive damage analysis model, and evaluating the delamination damage characteristics and laws of honeycomb sandwich structures under different impact energies through experiments. Repair techniques and process parameters for delamination damage are explored. It is found that as the impact energy increases, the damage area of honeycomb sandwich panels also increases, and the delamination damage extends from the impact center to the surrounding areas, accompanied by damage such as fiber fracture and matrix cracking. The strength recovery rates of sandwich panels at impact energies of 5 J, 15 J, and 25 J after repair are 71.90%, 65.89%, and 67.10%, respectively, which has a considerable repair effect. Here, hexagonal and triangular lattices are layered and merged into a re-entrant honeycomb to replace each cell wall of the re-entrant honeycomb. In order to study the crushing behavior of the new variable-angle-variable-substructure-number-gradient honeycomb, a finite element analysis of in-plane and out-of-plane crushing was carried out. The effects of different gradient parameters on the deformation mode and extrusion response were discussed, respectively. The results show that different grading parameters have different effects on the crushing behavior of honeycombs for in-plane and out-of-plane crushing. Compared with out-of-plane crushing, the influence of the hierarchical structure on the in-plane crushing deformation mode and the increase in platform stress are much larger. Compared with the ordinary honeycombs, changing the substructure angle does not necessarily improve the platform stress of the honeycomb. From the perspective of platform stress, the layered structure has different effects on the improvement of honeycomb energy absorption; the maximum platform stress of the honeycomb is increased. Navigating the crossroads of sustainable infrastructure and innovative waste management, this research unveils the potential of waste honeycombs (WHCs)—an overlooked byproduct of apiculture—as a potent modifier for asphalt binder formulations. This endeavor addresses the dual challenge of enhancing road pavement sustainability and mitigating environmental degradation. A meticulous methodology evaluated the impact of varying WHC concentrations (5, 10, and 15 wt.%) on the asphalt binder, examining its attributes pre- and post-aging. Employing an array of analytical tools—thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detection (TLC-FID); Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); scanning electron microscopy (SEM); thermogravimetric analysis (TGA); and a suite of conventional tests such as penetration, softening point, viscosity, ductility, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and multiple stress-creep recovery (MSCR)—provided a comprehensive insight into the binder's behavior. TLC-FID analyses revealed that WHC, with its 92 wt.% resin content, altered the SARA profile across distinct aging conditions, notably reducing asphaltene content, a factor linked to binder stiffness. The colloidal instability index (IC) further attested to this, pointing to a more thermodynamically stable system with WHC's inclusion. Meanwhile, FT-IR confirmed a physical interaction between WHC and asphalt without introducing new chemical entities. SEM observations highlighted the superior miscibility of WHC with asphalt, evidenced by a unique microtexture. With marked precision, TGA assessments unveiled a bolstering of asphalt's inherent thermal resilience consequent to a minor WHC integration. From the conventional tests, shifts in penetration, softening point, and viscosity were observed, with reduced viscosity, indicating improved workability. Lastly, while rutting potential was sensitive to WHC concentrations, fatigue resistance notably heightened with minor to moderate WHC inclusions. In essence, this pioneering study advocates for WHC's integration into asphalt formulations, offering enhanced road performance coupled with sustainable waste utilization. In the process of logistics, shock and vibration are the most important factors contributing to product damage. Assembling honeycomb paperboard and EPE is commonly used to provide cushioning and anti-vibration effects to materials. Therefore, it is necessary to study the vibration transmission properties of this kind of assembly in the anti-vibration process. The aim of this paper was to experimentally determine the vibration transmission properties of assemblies with honeycomb paperboard and expanded polyethylene (EPE). Through a sinusoidal sweep vibration test of this assembly, the vibration transmission characteristic curves of assemblies with honeycomb paperboard and EPE of different thicknesses were obtained and compared. Assuming the assembly and mass block as a single degree of freedom with a small damping linear system, the damping energy dissipation of the assembly and the resonance frequency were obtained. The vibration transmission property curves of the assembly can be divided into four regions. With an excitation acceleration of 0.5 g and a honeycomb paperboard with a thickness of 60 mm (F60), the vibration transmission rate and the resonance frequency—of the material dampened with EPE at a thickness of 60 mm (E60), and the assembly (F30/E30) with a 30 mm thick honeycomb paperboard and 30 mm thick EPE—increased by −2.5% and −17.5%, −86.9% and 79.3%, and −95.9% and −85.7%, respectively. Compared to the assembly with 20 mm thick honeycomb and 20 mm thick EPE (F20/E20), the vibration transmission rate, the resonance frequency, and the material damping and damping energy dissipation of F40/E20, F30/E30, and F20/E40 increased by 75.6%, 48.3%, and 66.1%; 1.2%, −21.5%, and −38.9%; 241.5%, 82.8%, and 13.3%; and 12.5%, 98.9%, and 106.8%, respectively. Compared to F60 and E60, the damping energy dissipation of F30/E30 increased by 2816.7% and 133.3%, respectively. The assembly of F30/E30 has the smallest vibration transmission rate and the most vibration energy dissipation among these assemblies. This means that the assembly of F30/E30 absorbs the most external vibration energy, while the acceleration that is transmitted to the internal product is minimal. Therefore, in the design of cushioning packaging, according to the characteristics and natural frequency of the internal products, an appropriate assembly can be selected, which should have a lower vibration transmission rate and more vibration energy dissipation, and should not resonate with the internal product. A honeycomb column thin-walled structure (HCTS) was designed and the relative density was calculated for numerical simulation. The HCTS samples were fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM). The numerical simulation and a three-point bending test were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the HCTS made of Ti6Al4V. The findings of the numerical simulation demonstrated that the HCTS had a stronger resistance to deformation and a maximum loading force 30% higher than the equivalent solid thin-walled structure (ESTS). The mechanical performance of the HCTS as determined by the three-point bending test was mostly comparable with the numerical simulation. The maximum loading force of the experimental HCTS050-E thin-walled structure was 1200 N higher than that of HCTS050-S. Magnesium (Mg)/Polylactic acid (PLA) composites are promising materials for bone regeneration and tissue engineering applications. PLA is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer that can be easily processed into various shapes and structures, such as scaffolds, films, and fibers, but has low biodegradability. Mg is a biocompatible metal that has been proven to have good biodegradability and osteoconductivity, which makes it suitable for bone tissue engineering. In this study, we prepared and characterized a Mg/PLA composite as a potential material for direct ink writing (DIW) in 3D printing. The results showed that the addition of Mg has a significant impact on PLA's thermal and structural properties and has also significantly increased the degradation of PLA. XRD was used to determine the degree of crystallinity in the PLA/Mg composite, which provides insight into its thermal stability and degradation behavior. The crystallization temperature of PLA increased from 168 to 172 °C for a 15 wt% Mg incorporation, and the melting temperature reduced from 333 °C to 285 °C. The surface morphology and composition of these films were analyzed with SEM. The films with 5 wt% of Mg particles displayed the best-ordered honeycomb structure in their film form. Such structures are considered to affect the mechanical, biological and heat/mass transfer properties of the Mg/PLA composites and products. Finally, the composite ink was used as a feed for direct ink writing in 3D printing, and the preliminary 3D printing experiments were successful in resulting in dimensionally and structurally integral scaffold samples. Most natural materials have rotational and hierarchical properties, so they can show excellent mechanical properties such as shear resistance and impact resistance. In order to further improve the energy absorption characteristics of vibration absorbing structures, a new type of honeycomb structure with integral rotation and group rotation is designed and characterized. The dynamic characteristics of sandwich panels with a hierarchical hexagonal honeycomb (SP-HHHs) show significant improvements due to their distinct hierarchy configurations. However, this also increases the complexity of structural analysis. To address this issue, the variational asymptotic method was utilized to homogenize the unit cell of the SP-HHH and obtain the equivalent stiffness, establishing a two-dimensional equivalent plate model (2D-EPM). The accuracy and effectiveness of the 2D-EPM were then verified through comparisons with the results from a detailed 3D FE model in terms of the free vibration and frequency- and time-domain forced vibration, as well as through local field recovery analysis at peak and trough times. Furthermore, the tailorability of the typical unit cell was utilized to perform a parametric analysis of the effects of the length and thickness ratios of the first-order hierarchy on the dynamic characteristics of the SP-HHH under periodic loading. The results reveal that the vertices serve as weak points in the SP-HHH, while the vertex cell pattern significantly influences the specific stiffness and stiffness characteristics of the panel. The SP-HHH with hexagonal vertex cells has superior specific stiffness compared to panels with circular and rectangular vertex cells, resulting in a more lightweight design and enhanced stiffness. Machining Nomex honeycomb composites (NHCs), which are widely-used materials in the aerospace industry, is an imperative process to obtain desired profiles. However, when machining NHCs to obtain a thin-edged surface, some problems can arise due to large cutting forces. To avoid these defects, a method of ultrasonic vibration machining with variable angles of the down milling disc cutter was proposed in this study. The processing principles and motion characteristics of this method were elaborated. A theoretical model of its cutting process was established. The principle of cutting force reduction was qualitatively analyzed based on the model, and an experimental validation was conducted. The results demonstrated that, due to a smaller swing angle in each pass, the proposed method could reduce the fractal dimension of the machined surface by 6.01% compared to 1° with 10° of angle in each pass. And severe machining defects were decreased. Additionally, comparing the process of the fixed 10° angle of ultrasonic vibration machining with the process of a 1° angle in a pass, cutting force can be significantly reduced by 33.5%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method which improved surface quality by reducing cutting forces. Engineering applications for honeycomb sandwich structures (HSS) are well recognized. Heterogeneous structures have been created using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) material, glass fiber-reinforced PEEK (GF-PEEK), and carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CF-PEEK) to further enhance the load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and impact resistance of HSS. In this study, we investigated the low-velocity impact response of HSS using numerical simulation. Our findings demonstrate that the choice of construction material significantly affects the impact resistance and structural stability of the HSS. We found that using fiber-reinforced PEEK significantly enhances the impact resistance of the overall structure, with GF-PEEK identified as the more appropriate face sheet material for the composite HSS based on a comparative study of load–displacement curves. Analysis of the plastic deformation of the honeycomb core, in combination with the stress and strain distribution of the composite HSS after low-velocity impact, indicates that CF-PEEK face sheets cause more noticeable damage to the core, resulting in evident plastic deformation. Additionally, we discovered that the use of fiber-reinforced materials effectively reduces deflection during low-velocity dynamic impact, particularly when both the face sheet and honeycomb core of the HSS are composed of the same fiber-reinforced PEEK material. A comparison of the compressive behavior of Al honeycomb under pure normal stress and combined normal–shear stress was analyzed in this work. The typical working stress of honeycomb is a compressive load along the direction parallel to the axis of the cells. However, the component can also undergo shear stresses during operation, which can cause premature failure. This work analyzes the mechanical behavior in compression by normal stress (0°) and in conditions of combined normal–shear stress (at 15° and 25°) using a special pair of wedges. The samples were obtained from a 3000 series Al alloy sandwich panel and tested according to the ASTM C365/C365M-22 standard. The different deformation modes of the cells in the combined compression were examined for three angles (0, 15°, and 25°). A theoretical model of combined compression was used to derive the normal and tangential components starting from the total stress–strain curves. A compression curve analysis was conducted at different angles θ, allowing for considerations regarding changes in strength, absorbed energy, and deformations. Overall, as the load application angle increased, both the shear resistance of the honeycomb and its tangential displacement up to densification increased, which is the opposite of what occurs in normal behavior. The cell rotation angle was calculated as the load angle varied. The rotation angle of the cell increased with the displacement of the crosshead and the application angle of the force. In this study, the mechanical behavior of aluminum honeycomb (AHC) sandwich structures filled with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) foam in situ under out-of-plane compression loading was investigated experimentally. Both non-filled and EVA-foam-filled sandwich specimens with three different AHC core cell sizes (5.20, 6.78, and 8.66 mm) were studied to correlate the foam-filling effect with a key structural parameter. The results showed that compression characteristic properties such as peak stress, plateau stress, and absorbed energy per unit volume of the sandwich structure increased with EVA foam filling. The structure showed high recoverability when the compression loading was removed due to the viscoelastic nature of EVA foam. Cored EVA sandwich with 8.66 mm AHC cell size was recovered at 44% of the original thickness. This result promises groundbreaking applications such as impact-resistant and self-healing structures. The performance of a multi-layer honeycomb skeleton can be significantly enhanced through tandem connection, while the structure's properties can be tailored by altering the layer stacking method of the honeycomb skeleton. To investigate the impact of layer stacking methods on the mechanical properties of multilayer honeycomb skeletons, 3D printing technology was used to prepare double-layer honeycomb skeleton tandem structures with different dislocation modes in compression testing. A finite element simulation model was established to conduct quasi-static simulation research. Compared to that of a single-layer honeycomb skeleton, the energy absorption of the honeycomb skeleton tandem structure increased. The optimal bearing capacity of the honeycomb skeleton was achieved when the upper and lower layers were precisely aligned. Once dislocation occurred, both the value of average platform stress and energy absorption decreased. Then, the bearing capacity of the honeycomb skeleton tandem structures increased with an enlargement of the dislocation, reaching its maximum at the half-dislocation period. An increase in the partition thickness and stiffness led to a reduction in the dislocation-induced effects on the mechanical properties. Ceramic components require very high energy consumption due to synthesis, shaping, and thermal treatment. However, this study suggests that combining the sol–gel process, replica technology, and stereolithography has the potential to produce highly complex geometries with energy savings in each process step. We fabricated light-frame honeycombs of Al2O3, Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT), and BaTiO3 (BT) using 3D-printed templates with varying structural angles between −30° and 30° and investigated their mechanical and piezoelectric properties. The Al2O3 honeycombs showed a maximum strength of approximately 6 MPa, while the BCZT and BaTiO3 honeycombs achieved a d33 above 180 pC/N. Additionally, the BCZT powder was prepared via a sol–gel process, and the impact of the calcination temperature on phase purity was analyzed. The results suggest that there is a large energy-saving potential for the synthesis of BCZT powder. In the field of structural health monitoring, Lamb Wave has become one of the most widely used inspection tools due to its advantages of wide detection range and high sensitivity. In this paper, a new damage detection method for honeycomb sandwich structures based on frequency spectrum and Lamb Wave Tomography is proposed. By means of simulation and experiment, a certain number of sensors were placed on the honeycomb sandwich plate to stimulate and receive the signals in both undamaged and damaged cases. By Lamb Wave Tomography, the differences of signals before and after damage were compared, and the damage indexes were calculated. Furthermore, the probability of each sensor path containing damage was analyzed, and the damage image was finally realized. The technology does not require analysis of the complex multimode propagation properties of Lamb Wave, nor does it require understanding and modeling of the properties of materials or structures. In both simulation and experiment, the localization errors of the damage conform to the detection requirements, thus verifying that the method has certain feasibility in damage detection. This study examines a hierarchical vertex-based structure that improves the crashworthiness of the conventional multi-cell square, a biological hierarchy of natural origin with exceptional mechanical properties. The vertex-based hierarchical square structure (VHS) is explored for its geometric properties, including infinite repetition and self-similarity. The cut-and-patch method is used to derive an equation for the material thicknesses of different orders of the VHS based on the principle of the same weight. A thorough parametric study of VHS was conducted using LS-DYNA, which examined the effects of material thickness, orders, and various structural ratios. The results were evaluated based on common crashworthiness criteria and demonstrated that the total energy absorption (TEA), specific energy absorption (SEA), and mean crushing force ( P m ) of VHS exhibited similar monotonicity concerning the orders. SEA of the first-order VHS with λ 1 = 0.3 and the second-order VHS with λ 1 = 0.3 and λ 2 = 0.1 are improved by at most 59.9% and 102.4% respectively; the second-order VHS with 0.2 ≤ λ 1 ≤ 0.4 and 0.1 ≤ λ 2 ≤ 0.15 have the better overall performance of crashworthiness. Then, the half-wavelength equation of VHS and P m of each fold was established based on the Super-Folding Element method. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis with the simulation results reveals three different out-of-plane deformation mechanisms of VHS. The study indicated that material thickness had a greater impact on crashworthiness. Finally, the comparison with conventional honeycombs demonstrated that VHS holds great promise as a structure for crashworthiness. A novel energy-absorbing structure, the Koch hierarchical honeycomb, which combines the Koch geometry with a conventional honeycomb structure, is proposed in this work. Adopting a hierarchical design concept using Koch has improved the novel structure more than the honeycomb. The mechanical properties of this novel structure under impact loading are studied by finite element simulation and compared with the conventional honeycomb structure. To effectively verify the reliability of the simulation analysis, quasi-static compression experiments were conducted on 3D-printed specimens. The results of the study showed that the first-order Koch hierarchical honeycomb structure increased the specific energy absorption by 27.52% compared to the conventional honeycomb structure. Furthermore, the highest specific energy absorption can be obtained by increasing the hierarchical order to 2. Moreover, the energy absorption of triangular and square hierarchies can be significantly increased. Based on the traditional concave hexagonal honeycomb structure, three kinds of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures were compared. The relative densities of traditional concave hexagonal honeycomb structures and three other classes of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures were derived using the geometric structure. The impact critical velocity of the structures was derived by using the 1-D impact theory. The in-plane impact characteristics and deformation modes of three kinds of similar concave hexagonal honeycomb structures in the concave direction at low, medium, and high velocity were analyzed using the finite element software ABAQUS. The results showed that the honeycomb structure of the cells of the three types undergoes two stages: concave hexagons and parallel quadrilaterals, at low velocity. For this reason, there are two stress platforms in the process of strain. With the increase in the velocity, the joints and middle of some cells form a glue-linked structure due to inertia. No excessive parallelogram structure appears, resulting in the blurring or even disappearance of the second stress platform. Finally, effects of different structural parameters on the plateau stress and energy absorption of structures similar to concave hexagons were obtained during low impact. Porous polymer monolith materials of 2-mm thickness were obtained by visible light-induced radical polymerization of oligocarbonate dimethacrylate (OCM-2) in the presence of 1-butanol (10 to 70 wt %) as a porogenic additive. The pore characteristics and morphology of polymers were studied by mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Monolithic polymers with both open and closed pores up to 100 nm in size are formed when the alcohol content in the initial composition is up to 20 wt %. The pore structure in such materials is a system of holes in the bulk of the polymer (hole-type pores). Open interconnected pores with a specific volume up to 2.22 cm3/g and modal pore size up to 10 microns are formed in the volume of the polymer with 1-butanol content of more than 30 wt %. Such porous monoliths are a structure of covalently bonded polymer globules (interparticle-type pores). The free space between the globules represents a system of open interconnected pores. In the transition region of 1-butanol concentrations (from 20 to 30 wt %), areas with both structures and intermediate frameworks, as well as honeycomb structures of polymer globules connected by bridges, are fixed on the polymer surface. It was found that the transition from one type of pore system to another is accompanied by a sharp change in the strength characteristics of the polymer. Approximation of experimental data using the sigmoid function made it possible to determine the concentration of the porogenic agent in the vicinity of which the percolation threshold is observed. As a multifunctional material, TiO2 shows excellent performance in catalytic degradation and lithium-ion storage. However, high electron-hole pair recombination, poor conductivity, and low theoretical capacity severely limit the practical application of TiO2. Herein, TiO2 nanotube (TiO2 NT) with a novel double-layer honeycomb structure were prepared by two-step electrochemical anodization. Honeycombed TiO2 NT arrays possess clean top surfaces and a long-range ordering, which greatly facilitates the preparation of high-performance binary and ternary materials. A binary TiO2 nanotube@Au nanoparticle (TiO2 NT@Au NP) composite accompanied by appropriately concentrated and uniformly distributed gold particles was prepared in this work. Interestingly, the TiO2 nanotube@Au nanoparticle (TiO2 NT@Au NP) composites not only showed the excellent catalytic degradation effect of methylene blue, but also demonstrated large lithium-ion storage capacity (310.6 μAh cm−2, 1.6 times of pristine TiO2 NT). Based on the realization of the controllable fabrication of binary TiO2 nanotube@MoS2 nanosheet (TiO2 NT@MoS2 NS) composite, ternary TiO2 nanotube@MoS2 nanosheet@Au nanoparticle (TiO2 NT@MoS2 NS@Au NP) composite with abundant defects and highly ordered structure was also innovatively designed and fabricated. As expected, the TiO2 NT@MoS2 NS@Au NP anode exhibits extremely high initial discharge specific capacity (487.4 μAh cm−2, 2.6 times of pristine TiO2 NT) and excellent capacity retention (81.0%). Mixed-valent Ba2Mn2+Mn23+(SeO3)6 crystallizes in a monoclinic P21/c structure and has honeycomb layers of Mn3+ ions alternating with triangular layers of Mn2+ ions. We established the key parameters governing its magnetic structure by magnetization M and specific heat Cp measurements. The title compound exhibits a close succession of a short-range correlation order at Tcorr = 10.1 ± 0.1 K and a long-range Néel order at TN = 5.7 ± 0.1 K, and exhibits a metamagnetic phase transition at T < TN with hysteresis most pronounced at low temperatures. The causes for these observations were found using the spin exchange parameters evaluated by density functional theory calculations. Aluminum honeycomb structures are used in the construction of protective materials due to the positive relationship between their mass and their energy-absorbing properties. Applying such materials in the construction of large machinery, such as military vehicles, requires the development of a new method of finite element modeling, one that considers conditions with high strain rates, because a material model is currently lacking in the available simulation software, including LS-DYNA. In the present study, we proposed and verified a method of numerically modeling honeycomb materials using a simplified Y element. Results with a good level of agreement between the full core model and the Y element were achieved. The obtained description of the material properties was used in the subsequent creation of a homogeneous model. In addition, we considered the influence of increases in pressure and the leakage of the air entrapped in the honeycomb cells. As a result, we were able to attain a high level of accuracy regarding the stress values across the entire range of progressive failure, from the loss of stability to full core densification, and across a wide range of strain rates. An ongoing growth of the available materials dedicated to additive manufacturing (AM) significantly extends the possibilities of their usage in many applications. A very good example is 20MnCr5 steel which is very popular in conventional manufacturing technologies and shows good processability in AM processes. This research takes into account the process parameter selection and torsional strength analysis of AM cellular structures. The conducted research revealed a significant tendency for between-layer cracking which is strictly dependent on the layered structure of the material. Additionally, the highest torsional strength was registered for specimens with a honeycomb structure. To determine the best-obtained properties, in the case of the samples with cellular structures, a torque-to-mass coefficient was introduced. Honeycomb structures have a wide range of applications owing to their light weight and promising energy absorption features. However, a conventional honeycomb structure is designed to absorb impact energy only in the out-of-plane direction and demonstrates unsatisfactory performance when the impact energy originates from a different direction. In this study, we proposed an origami honeycomb structure with the aim of providing an approximately isotropic energy absorption performance. The structure was created by folding a conventional honeycomb structure based on the Miura origami pattern, and it was investigated using both numerical and experimental approaches. Investigations of the structural behaviors under both out-of-plane and in-plane compressions were conducted, and the results revealed significantly different deformation modes in comparison with those of a conventional honeycomb structure. To determine the influences of geometries, we conducted a series of numerical studies, considering various structural parameters, and analyzed the response surface of the mean stress in three directions. Based on the numerical and experimental results, a parameter indicating the approximate isotropy of the origami honeycomb structure was introduced. Bone marrow is complex structure containing heterogenetic cells, making it difficult to regenerate using artificial scaffolds. In a previous study, we succeeded in developing honeycomb tricalcium phosphate (TCP), which is a cylindrical scaffold with a honeycomb arrangement of straight pores, and we demonstrated that TCP with 300 and 500 μm pore diameters (300TCP and 500TCP) induced bone marrow structure within the pores. In this study, we examined the optimal scaffold structure for bone marrow with homeostatic bone metabolism using honeycomb TCP. 300TCP and 500TCP were transplanted into rat muscle, and bone marrow formation was histologically assessed. Immunohistochemistry for CD45, CD34, Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), c-kit single staining, Runx2/N-cadherin, and c-kit/Tie-2 double staining was performed. The area of bone marrow structure, which includes CD45(+) round-shaped hematopoietic cells and CD34(+) sinusoidal vessels, was larger in 300TCP than in 500TCP. Additionally, Runx2(+) osteoblasts and c-kit(+) hematopoietic stem cells were observed on the surface of bone tissue formed within TCP. Among Runx2(+) osteoblasts, spindle-shaped N-cadherin(+) cells existed in association with c-kit(+)Tie-2(+) hematopoietic stem cells on the bone tissue formed within TCP, which formed a hematopoietic stem cell niche similar to as in vivo. The out-of-plane compression behaviour of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy super-stub honeycomb cellular structures without and with friction stir welding (FSW) facesheets are presented in this paper. A total of twelve axially compressed experiments on large-scale specimens, six with square hollow section (SHS) cores and six with hexagonal hollow section (HHS) cores, were conducted, with failure modes, ultimate resistances and axial load-end shortening curves analysed. The accuracy of finite element (FE) models was validated in accordance with test results. The numerical data obtained from extensive parametric analyses combined with test data were subsequently used to evaluate the applicability of existing design rules in Chinese, European and American aluminium alloy specifications. The results showed that the three specifications generally yielded very conservative predictions for the out-of-plane compression resistances of SHS and HHS super-stub honeycomb cores without and with FSW facesheets by about 30–37%. Design recommendations on the cross-section effective thickness are finally proposed and shown to provide much more accurate and consistent predictions than current design methods. The research results are beneficial to the application and development of large-scale super-stub honeycomb structures in structural engineering, such as the helicopter landing platforms, the base of fluid and gas tanks and ship decks. In this review, we present a comprehensive summary of the formation of honeycomb microstructures and their applications, which include tissue engineering, antibacterial materials, replication processes or sensors. The history of the honeycomb pattern, the first experiments, which mostly involved the breath figure procedure and the improved phase separation, the most recent approach to honeycomb pattern formation, are described in detail. Subsequent surface modifications of the pattern, which involve physical and chemical modifications and further enhancement of the surface properties, are also introduced. Different aspects influencing the polymer formation, such as the substrate influence, a particular polymer or solvent, which may significantly contribute to pattern formation, and thus influence the target structural properties, are also discussed. Foam-filled honeycombs have been widely applied due to their excellent load transfer mitigation and energy absorption capacity. In the present study, a layered graded foam concrete-filled auxetic honeycomb was proposed by tuning its overall compression deformation mode to layer-by-layer deformation mode to realize multi-level structural protection. The effect of the honeycomb cell-wall thickness gradient (with an average thickness of 0.25 mm, thickness gradients of 0.30:0.25:0.20, 0.35:0.25:0.15 and 0.40:0.25:0.10, and corresponding positive gradients) and the foam concrete filler density gradient (408:575:848, 848:575:408) on the response mode, load transfer, energy absorption, and Poisson's ratio of the proposed composite was systematically investigated. The results showed that the graded composite exhibited an obvious layered deformation mode and a negative Poisson's ratio effect under relatively low and moderate loading rates (1 m/s, 10 m/s, respectively), especially with the foam concrete density gradient. Under a high loading rate (100 m/s), the graded composite demonstrated progressive collapse initiating from the loading end with a layer-by-layer crushing mode, regardless of the thickness and density gradient. In the response of the composite with a 0.2:0.2:0.2 thickness ratio and a 408:575:848 foam concrete gradient subjected to 1 m/s crushing, the first-layer, second-layer, and third-layer foam concrete absorbed 94.62%, 88.72%, and 86.94% of the total foam concrete energy absorption in the corresponding crushing stage, respectively. Compared with the counterpart homogeneous composites, although the graded composite had an insignificant improvement on energy absorption (less than 5%), it was able to significantly reduce the peak load (as high as 30%) to mitigate the load transfer to the protected structure. The effective Poisson's ratio of the first layer in the composite with positive gradient (408:575:848) increased to −2 then converged to −0.6 under 2 m/s and 10 m/s crushing, and ranged from −0.4 to −0.1 under 50 m/s and 100 m/s crushing, respectively. The effective Poisson's ratio of the middle and bottom layers increased to −2 initially and converged to range −0.4 to −0.1, regardless of the crushing speed. The staged response mode of the graded composite facilitated the realization of multi-level structure protection with significantly reduced peak load transferred to the protected structure and tuned energy absorption. This article analyzes the influence of the initial deflection of the flat layers on the bending stiffness (BS) of honeycomb paperboards and presents two methods for its calculation. Both methods allow for the determination of BS in the main directions in the plane of the paperboard, i.e., the machine direction (MD) and the cross direction (CD). In addition, they have been verified by comparing the calculation results with the results of the BS measurements. The first method allowed for the calculation of the BS of cellular paperboard based on the mechanical properties of the paper used for its production. The second method allowed for the estimation of the BS of cellular paperboard based on the bending stiffness of other honeycomb paperboards with the same raw material composition and the same core cell size but with different thicknesses. In the first analytical method for the calculation of the bending stiffness of cellular paperboard, which does not include the deflections of the flat layers, the calculation results significantly differ from the measurement results, and they are overestimated. With the increasing number of automobiles on the road, passive safety has become a particularly important issue. In this paper, an energy-absorbing material, origami aluminum honeycomb, was manufactured by a welding process for use as an automobile energy absorbing box. The mechanical properties and deformation of welded origami aluminum honeycomb in three directions were studied through quasi-static and dynamic compression tests. The results show that the origami aluminum honeycomb had good mechanical energy absorption performance, and the optimal directions are identified. Combined with theoretical analysis, the errors between experiments and simulations are shown. The origami honeycomb structure was designed for use as an automobile energy absorbing box. Analysis shows that it could absorb at least 10% of the kinetic energy of a vehicle during a collision, and could play a role in protecting the interior of the vehicle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Manufacturing aircraft components through 3D printing has become a widespread concept with proven applicability for serial production of certain structural parts. The main objective of the research study is to determine whether a chlorinated polyethylene material reinforced with milled carbon fibers has the potential of replacing the current 5052 NIDA aluminum alloy core of the IAR330 helicopter tail rotor blade, under the form of a honeycomb structure with hexagonal cells. Achieving this purpose implied determining the tensile and compression mechanical properties of the material realized by fused deposition modeling. The tensile tests have been conducted on specimens manufactured on three printing directions, so that the orthotropic nature of the material may be taken into account. The bare compression tests were realized on specimens manufactured from both materials, with similar honeycomb characteristics. All the mechanical tests have been performed on the Instron 8872 servo hydraulic testing system and the results have been evaluated with the Dantec Q400 Digital Image Correlation system. The experimental tests have been reproduced as finite element analyses which have been validated by results comparison, in order to determine if the compression model is viable for more complex numerical analysis. This paper presents a modified re-entrant honeycomb auxetic structure. The structure is constructed by adding an additional horizontal member between the vertical and re-entrant member of the semi-re-entrant honeycomb model to increase the overall compliance of the structure in order to obtain higher values of negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). An analytical model of the structure is presented, taking into account the bending, shear, and axial deformations. The model is verified using finite element analysis (FEA) and tensile testing. The results of FEA and tensile testing corroborate the results of the presented mathematical model. The structure is also compared to the existing re-entrant honeycomb structure. The newly added strut has shown a direct effect on the directional properties of the overall structure. With an increase in the newly added strut to re-entrant lengths, NPR was significantly enhanced in the x-direction and reduced in the y-direction loadings. The structure shows an improved Young's modulus compared to solid material in both loading directions, especially for the low values of the new strut and re-entrant lengths ratio. Honeycomb-based, modular composites with a relative density of 0.3948 and a slenderness ratio Lges/t of 6.48 were fabricated on PZT building blocks connected with a PZT-filled phenyl silicone resin. The macro- and micro-structure, phase composition, and the interface between the two materials were analyzed by SEM and image analysis techniques. The mechanical in-plane strain response was determined with uniaxial compression tests and the transversal piezoelectric strain response was determined by applying an electric field. These deformations were analyzed by a 2D digital image correlation analysis to calculate the mechanical strain amplification of monolithic and composite PZT lattice structures. Compared to bulk PZT, the piezoelectric strain amplification in the Y-direction |aypiezo| was higher by a factor of 69 for the composite and by a factor of 12 for the monolithic cellular PZT lattice, when it was assumed that the ratio of the deformation of the bulk material to bulk material was 1. The mechanical amplification of the composite lattices increased up to 73 and that of the cellular PZT lattices decreased to 12. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are no doubt the most widely studied nanomaterials in the past decade. Most recently, a new type of 2D material named the double-layer honeycomb (DLHC) structure opened a door to achieving a series of 2D materials from traditional semiconductors. However, as a newly developed material, there still lacks a timely understanding of its structure, property, applications, and underlying mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the structural stability and experimental validation of this 2D material, and systematically summarize the properties and applications including the electronic structures, topological properties, optical properties, defect engineering, and heterojunctions. It was concluded that the DLHC can be a universal configuration applying to III–V, II–VI, and I–VII semiconductors. Moreover, these DLHC materials indeed have exotic properties such as being excitonic/topological insulators. The successful fabrication of DLHC materials further demonstrates it is a promising topic. Finally, we summarize several issues to be addressed in the future, including further experimental validation, defect engineering, heterojunction engineering, and strain engineering. Sandwich structures are commonly used in many branches of modern engineering, such as aerospace or naval constructions. In this work, a vibration analysis of such structures is performed with the use of an anlytical model based on a zig-zag hypothesis. Due to the assumed periodic microstructure, which may occure in any layer of the structure, the initial governing equations describing its dynamic behaviour may contain periodic, non-continuous coefficients. The main aim of the presented paper is to show an analytical solution to the issue of the vibration analysis of the mentioned structures. With the use of the tolerance averaging technique, the initial governing equations are transformed to the form with constant coefficients, which is convenient to solve using well-known mathematical methods. The derived model is a versatile solution for any type of periodically inhomogeneous sandwich plate, including sandwich plates with a honeycomb core. Eventually, in the calculation example, the application of the derived averaged model in the analysis of vibrations of such structures is presented and discussed. The convergence of results of the tolerance model and FEM analysis proves the correctness and superiority of the proposed solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
