To optimize the assembly methods of honeycomb structures and enhance their design flexibility, this study investigated the impact mechanical responses of tandem honeycomb-core sandwich structures with varying misalignment assembly lengths. Impact tests were conducted across different energy levels on single-layer and tandem honeycomb-core sandwiches to observe their impact processes and failure behaviors. Our findings indicate that tandem honeycomb cores significantly enhance the impact resistance compared with single-layer configurations, even though a misaligned assembly can deteriorate this property. A finite element model was developed and validated experimentally; the model showed good agreement with the experiments, thereby allowing the simulation and evaluation of the impact responses. Herein, we reveal that specific misalignment lengths can either increase or decrease the impact resistance, providing insights into improving the resilience of tandem honeycomb-core structures. Our results not only contribute to enhancing the impact resistance of honeycomb-core sandwich structures but also offer a valuable basis for their practical applications in engineering. Honeycomb sandwich panels are utilized in many industrial applications due to their high bending resistance relative to their weight. Defects between the core and the facesheet compromise their integrity and efficiency due to the inability to transfer loads. The material system studied in the present paper is a unidirectional carbon fiber composite facesheet with a honeycomb core with a variety of defects at the interface between the two material systems. Current nondestructive techniques focus on defect detectability, whereas the presented method uses high-frequency ultrasound testing (UT) to detect and quantify the defect geometry and defect type. Testing is performed using two approaches, a laboratory scale immersion tank and a novel portable UT system, both of which utilize only single-side access to the part. Coupons are presented with defects spanning from 5 to 40 mm in diameter, whereas defects in the range of 15–25 mm and smaller are considered below the detectability limits of existing inspection methods. Defect types studied include missing adhesive, unintentional foreign objects that occur during the manufacturing process, damaged core, and removed core sections. An algorithm is presented to quantify the defect perimeter. The provided results demonstrate successful defect detection, with an average defect diameter error of 0.6 mm across all coupons studied in the immersion system and 1.1 mm for the portable system. The best accuracy comes from the missing adhesive coupons, with an average error of 0.3 mm. Conversely, the worst results come from the missing or damaged honeycomb coupons, with an error average of 0.7 mm, well below the standard detectability levels of 15–25 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic mechanical behavior and cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels, which are extensively employed in product cushioning packaging due to their exceptional energy absorption capabilities, were examined using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Several factors, such as maximum acceleration–static stress, cushioning coefficient–static stress, and other curves, were analyzed under various impact conditions. The simulated stress–strain, deformation modes, cushioning coefficients, and other parameters demonstrate consistency with the experimental results. The acceleration, maximum compression, and cushioning coefficient obtained from the experiment and simulation calculation were 30.68 g, 15.44 mm, and 2.65, and 31.96 g, 14.91 mm, and 2.79, respectively. The results indicate that all error values were less than 5%, confirming the precision and reliability of the model. Furthermore, the model was utilized to simulate and predict the cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels with different cell structures and paper thicknesses. In order to improve the impact resistance of sandwich panels under low-velocity impact, the lotus leaf vein is selected as a biological prototype to design a bio-inspired honeycomb (BIH) sandwich panel. ABAQUS is used to establish and effectively verify the finite element (FE) model of the BIH sandwich panel. To systematically compare and study the mechanical properties of BIH and conventional hexagonal honeycomb sandwich panels under low-velocity impact, the maximum displacement of face-sheets, the deformation mode, the plastic energy consumption and the dynamic response curve of the impact end are presented. At the same time, the performance differences between them are revealed from the perspective of an energy absorption mechanism. Furthermore, the influence of the circumscribed circle diameter ratio of the BIH trunk to branch (γ), the thickness ratio of the trunk to branch (K) and the impact angle (θ) on impact resistance is studied. Finally, the BIH sandwich panel is further optimized by using the response surface method. It can be concluded that, compared to conventional hexagonal honeycomb sandwich panels, the addition of walls in the BIH sandwich panel reduces the maximum deformation of the rear face-sheet by 10.29% and increases plastic energy consumption by 8.02%. This analysis investigated the impact wave response and propagation on a composite sandwich shell when subjected to a low-velocity external shock, considering hygrothermal effects. The sandwich shell was crafted using face layers composed of functional gradient metal–ceramic matrix material and a core layer reinforced with negative Poisson's honeycomb. The honeycomb layer consisted of a combination of viscoelastic polymer material and elastic material. The equivalent parameters for the functional gradient material in the face layers were determined using the Mori–Tanaka and Voigt models, and the parameters for the negative Poisson's ratio honeycomb reinforcement core layer were obtained through Gibson's unit cell model. Parameters relevant to a low-velocity impact were derived using a modified Hertz contact law. The internal deformations, strains, and stress of the composite sandwich shell were described based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. The dynamic equilibrium equations were established using Hamilton's principle, and the Galerkin method along with the Newmark direct integration scheme was employed to calculate the shell's response to impact. The validity of the analysis was confirmed through a comparison with published literature. This investigation showed that a multilayer negative Poisson's ratio viscoelastic polymer material honeycomb-cored structure can dissipate impact wave energy swiftly and suppress shock effectively. Composite radomes are usually located in the nose of aircraft and are important structural components that protect radar antenna. The finite element model of a radome structure is developed and analyzed in this article. Single-objective deterministic and reliability optimization models based on the minimum total mass of the radome structure were established, and the layer thickness of each part of the honeycomb sandwich radome structure was considered a design variable. A multi-objective deterministic and reliability optimization model for a radome structure with a minimum total mass and maximum buckling critical load was established, and a particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to solve the problem. This study is conducted on glass fiber-reinforced composite honeycomb sandwich structures by introducing delamination damage through low-velocity impact tests, establishing a three-dimensional progressive damage analysis model, and evaluating the delamination damage characteristics and laws of honeycomb sandwich structures under different impact energies through experiments. Repair techniques and process parameters for delamination damage are explored. It is found that as the impact energy increases, the damage area of honeycomb sandwich panels also increases, and the delamination damage extends from the impact center to the surrounding areas, accompanied by damage such as fiber fracture and matrix cracking. The strength recovery rates of sandwich panels at impact energies of 5 J, 15 J, and 25 J after repair are 71.90%, 65.89%, and 67.10%, respectively, which has a considerable repair effect. The dynamic characteristics of sandwich panels with a hierarchical hexagonal honeycomb (SP-HHHs) show significant improvements due to their distinct hierarchy configurations. However, this also increases the complexity of structural analysis. To address this issue, the variational asymptotic method was utilized to homogenize the unit cell of the SP-HHH and obtain the equivalent stiffness, establishing a two-dimensional equivalent plate model (2D-EPM). The accuracy and effectiveness of the 2D-EPM were then verified through comparisons with the results from a detailed 3D FE model in terms of the free vibration and frequency- and time-domain forced vibration, as well as through local field recovery analysis at peak and trough times. Furthermore, the tailorability of the typical unit cell was utilized to perform a parametric analysis of the effects of the length and thickness ratios of the first-order hierarchy on the dynamic characteristics of the SP-HHH under periodic loading. The results reveal that the vertices serve as weak points in the SP-HHH, while the vertex cell pattern significantly influences the specific stiffness and stiffness characteristics of the panel. The SP-HHH with hexagonal vertex cells has superior specific stiffness compared to panels with circular and rectangular vertex cells, resulting in a more lightweight design and enhanced stiffness. A comparison of the compressive behavior of Al honeycomb under pure normal stress and combined normal–shear stress was analyzed in this work. The typical working stress of honeycomb is a compressive load along the direction parallel to the axis of the cells. However, the component can also undergo shear stresses during operation, which can cause premature failure. This work analyzes the mechanical behavior in compression by normal stress (0°) and in conditions of combined normal–shear stress (at 15° and 25°) using a special pair of wedges. The samples were obtained from a 3000 series Al alloy sandwich panel and tested according to the ASTM C365/C365M-22 standard. The different deformation modes of the cells in the combined compression were examined for three angles (0, 15°, and 25°). A theoretical model of combined compression was used to derive the normal and tangential components starting from the total stress–strain curves. A compression curve analysis was conducted at different angles θ, allowing for considerations regarding changes in strength, absorbed energy, and deformations. Overall, as the load application angle increased, both the shear resistance of the honeycomb and its tangential displacement up to densification increased, which is the opposite of what occurs in normal behavior. The cell rotation angle was calculated as the load angle varied. The rotation angle of the cell increased with the displacement of the crosshead and the application angle of the force. In this study, the mechanical behavior of aluminum honeycomb (AHC) sandwich structures filled with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) foam in situ under out-of-plane compression loading was investigated experimentally. Both non-filled and EVA-foam-filled sandwich specimens with three different AHC core cell sizes (5.20, 6.78, and 8.66 mm) were studied to correlate the foam-filling effect with a key structural parameter. The results showed that compression characteristic properties such as peak stress, plateau stress, and absorbed energy per unit volume of the sandwich structure increased with EVA foam filling. The structure showed high recoverability when the compression loading was removed due to the viscoelastic nature of EVA foam. Cored EVA sandwich with 8.66 mm AHC cell size was recovered at 44% of the original thickness. This result promises groundbreaking applications such as impact-resistant and self-healing structures. In the field of structural health monitoring, Lamb Wave has become one of the most widely used inspection tools due to its advantages of wide detection range and high sensitivity. In this paper, a new damage detection method for honeycomb sandwich structures based on frequency spectrum and Lamb Wave Tomography is proposed. By means of simulation and experiment, a certain number of sensors were placed on the honeycomb sandwich plate to stimulate and receive the signals in both undamaged and damaged cases. By Lamb Wave Tomography, the differences of signals before and after damage were compared, and the damage indexes were calculated. Furthermore, the probability of each sensor path containing damage was analyzed, and the damage image was finally realized. The technology does not require analysis of the complex multimode propagation properties of Lamb Wave, nor does it require understanding and modeling of the properties of materials or structures. In both simulation and experiment, the localization errors of the damage conform to the detection requirements, thus verifying that the method has certain feasibility in damage detection. Sandwich structures are commonly used in many branches of modern engineering, such as aerospace or naval constructions. In this work, a vibration analysis of such structures is performed with the use of an anlytical model based on a zig-zag hypothesis. Due to the assumed periodic microstructure, which may occure in any layer of the structure, the initial governing equations describing its dynamic behaviour may contain periodic, non-continuous coefficients. The main aim of the presented paper is to show an analytical solution to the issue of the vibration analysis of the mentioned structures. With the use of the tolerance averaging technique, the initial governing equations are transformed to the form with constant coefficients, which is convenient to solve using well-known mathematical methods. The derived model is a versatile solution for any type of periodically inhomogeneous sandwich plate, including sandwich plates with a honeycomb core. Eventually, in the calculation example, the application of the derived averaged model in the analysis of vibrations of such structures is presented and discussed. The honeycomb sandwich structure is widely used in energy-absorbing facilities because it is lightweight, has a high specific stiffness and high specific strength, and is easy to process. It also has dynamic mechanical characteristics such as a high impact resistance and high energy absorption. To explore the influence of the Poisson's ratio on the local impact resistance, this paper compares and analyzes the local impact resistance of a series of honeycomb cores with different Poisson's ratios under the impact of a spherical projectile at different speeds. Three typical honeycombs with negative/zero/positive Poisson ratios (re-entrant hexagon, semi-re-entrant hexagon, and hexagon) are selected to change the geometric parameters in order to have the same relative density and different Poisson ratios (−2.76–3.63). The relative magnitude of the rear face sheet displacement is in the order of negative Poisson's ratio > zero Poisson's ratio > positive Poisson's ratio, which reveals that the honeycomb structure with the positive Poisson's ratio has better protection ability than the others. Finally, a dual-wall hexagonal honeycomb is proposed. The rear face sheet displacement of the dual-wall hexagonal honeycomb sandwich structure is reduced by 34.4% at 25 m/s compared with the hexagonal honeycomb, which has a better local impact resistance. Honeycomb sandwich structures (HSSs) are excellent candidates for light and efficient microwave-absorbing materials. In this work, we design an HSS using SiO2 fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (SiO2f/ER) composites as both the top and bottom layers to improve the impedance matching with free space. Target dielectric properties of the honeycomb and coated lossy material of the HSS were calculated based on the multilayer transmission line theory, metal backplane model, and homogenization theory. In addition, the interface effect between the SiO2f/ER and honeycomb of the HSS was discussed theoretically, experimentally, and numerically, indicating a 1–4% contribution of microwave absorption resulting from the interface. By analyzing the equivalent resistance, equivalent capacitance, as well as equivalent inductance, the enhanced microwave absorption of HSS is attributed to the formation of the interfacial transition zone, which benefits both impedance matching and electromagnetic loss. Due to their complex microstructures, the research on the static and dynamic behaviors of triangular honeycomb sandwich panels (triangular HSPs) is limited. In this study, the effective plate properties of triangular HSP was obtained by the homogenizing of the unit cell, and then the input to a VAM-based two-dimensional equivalent plate model (2D-EPM) to perform static and dynamic analyses. The accuracy of the proposed model for predicting the equivalent stiffness of the triangular HSP was verified by three-point bending experiments of 3D-printed specimens. Then, the static displacement, global buckling, and free vibrations predicted by 2D-EPM were verified with the results from three-dimensional finite element model simulations under various boundary conditions. The influences of structural parameters (including angle, core wall thickness, and cell side length of the unit cell) on the static and dynamic characteristics of triangular HSPs were also investigated, which can provide a useful tool for the modeling and evaluation of triangular HSPs under different conditions. Honeycombs resemble the structure of a number of natural and biological materials such as cancellous bone, wood, and cork. Thick honeycomb could be also used for energy absorption applications. Moreover, studying the mechanical behavior of honeycombs under in-plane loading could help understanding the mechanical behavior of more complex 3D tessellated structures such as porous biomaterials. In this paper, we study the mechanical behavior of thick honeycombs made using additive manufacturing techniques that allow for fabrication of honeycombs with arbitrary and precisely controlled thickness. Thick honeycombs with different wall thicknesses were produced from polylactic acid (PLA) using fused deposition modelling, i.e., an additive manufacturing technique. The samples were mechanically tested in-plane under compression to determine their mechanical properties. We also obtained exact analytical solutions for the stiffness matrix of thick hexagonal honeycombs using both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. The stiffness matrix was then used to derive analytical relationships that describe the elastic modulus, yield stress, and Poisson's ratio of thick honeycombs. Finite element models were also built for computational analysis of the mechanical behavior of thick honeycombs under compression. The mechanical properties obtained using our analytical relationships were compared with experimental observations and computational results as well as with analytical solutions available in the literature. It was found that the analytical solutions presented here are in good agreement with experimental and computational results even for very thick honeycombs, whereas the analytical solutions available in the literature show a large deviation from experimental observation, computational results, and our analytical solutions. Honeycomb aluminum structures are used in energy-absorbing constructions in military, automotive, aerospace and space industries. Especially, the protection against explosives in military vehicles is very important. The paper deals with the study of selected aluminum honeycomb sandwich materials subjected to static and dynamic compressive loading. The used equipment includes: static strength machine, drop hammer and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The results show the influence of applied strain rate on the strength properties, especially Plateau stress, of the tested material. In each of the discussed cases, an increase in the value of plateau stresses in the entire strain range was noted with an increase in the strain rate, with an average of 10 to 19%. This increase is mostly visible in the final phase of structure destruction, and considering the geometrical parameters of the samples, the plateau stress increase was about 0.3 MPa between samples with the smallest and largest cell size for the SHPB test and about 0.15 MPa for the drop hammer test. For aerospace applications, honeycomb sandwich panels may have small perforations on the cell walls of the honeycomb core to equilibrate the internal core pressure with external gas pressure, which prevent face-sheet/core debonding due to pressure build-up at high temperature. We propose a new form of perforation on the cell walls of honeycomb sandwich panels to reduce the influence of the perforations on the cell walls on the mechanical properties. In this paper, the high temperature mechanical properties of a new vented Ti-6Al-4V honeycomb sandwich panel were investigated. A vented Ti-6AL-4V honeycomb sandwich panel with 35Ti-35Zr-15Cu-15Ni as the filler alloy was manufactured by high-temperature brazing. The element distribution of the brazed joints was examined by means of SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (energy-dispersive spectroscopy) analyses. Compared to the interaction between the face-sheets and the brazing filler, the diffusion and reaction between the honeycomb core and the brazing filler were stronger. The flatwise compression and flexural mechanical properties of the vented honeycomb sandwich panels were investigated at 20, 160, 300, and 440 °C, respectively. The flatwise compression strength, elastic modulus, and the flexural strength of the vented honeycomb sandwich panels decreased with the increase of temperature. Moreover, the flexural strength of the L-direction sandwich panels was larger than that of the W-direction sandwich panels at the same temperature. More importantly, the vented honeycomb sandwich panels exhibited good compression performance similar to the unvented honeycomb sandwich panels, and the open holes on the cell walls have no negative effect on the compression performance of the honeycomb sandwich panels in these conditions.
