The dimensional stability of paper during printing is crucial for ensuring production quality and runnability. However, inkjet printing faces inherent challenges due to the hygroscopic nature of paper and the use of water-based inks. Despite freshly printed sheets are flat, a considerable development of paper curl is often observed during storage. In this study, we establish the link between the migration of ink co-solvents and the long-term curl development of printed paper. A4 paper sheets were sprayed with a water-glycerol model ink and changes in the sheet's curvature were monitored using a 2D-laser sensor. We also investigated glycerol migration by splitting the sheets into layers and determining the glycerol distribution using high-performance liquid chromatography. Our results demonstrate the development of curl during storage as well as glycerol migration in thickness direction of the sheet, both on a comparable timescale. We thus propose that long term curl in inkjet printing can be caused by z-directional migration of the co-solvent (glycerol) over time. This study enhances understanding of the physical mechanisms that drive the long-term curl phenomenon in inkjet-printed sheets. The results can be used to optimize printing processes, allowing for the production of higher quality printed products with greater dimensional stability.

Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper. This study provides a new framework for the preparation of high quality, multifunctional, environmentally friendly water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper substrates.

Abstract In this study, the utilization of a dry film photoresist (DFR) was explored for fabricating a patterned insulating layer in Ag nanowire (AgNW) bottom electrodes with various designs for flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). With a single hot-pressing step, a pre-patterned DFR insulator was attached onto the AgNW electrodes, thus forming insulated electrodes in desired patterns. In the same hot-pressing step, AgNWs were also embedded into poly(methyl methacrylate), which sufficiently reduced the root mean square (RMS) roughness (~5 nm) for use in OLED lighting. Using DFR, AgNW electrodes with various shapes were fabricated to realize shaped flexible OLED lighting. The performance of OLED lighting employing the AgNW/patterned-DFR insulator electrode was comparable to that of indium‑tin-oxide-based OLED lighting. Further, the DFR insulator was utilized as a planarization layer in a paper-based OLED lighting, which operated well with a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V and maximum luminance of 157 cd/m2 at 7.5 V. In this study, we explored the facile and quick dry transfer method to fabricate a paper-based electrode for flexible printed energy storage system. The conventional Ag nanoparticle suspension with high solid contents above ~50 wt% was confirmed to be deposited on a super hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate (SHP-PET) substrate without a special ink formulation or surface treatment of substrate. The silver nanoparticle (AgNP) layer on the SHP-PET was able to be transferred only onto the toner-printed region of the paper substrate during a simple lamination process, thereby realizing the patterned AgNP conductive lines on the paper substrates. The AgNP/toner/paper electrodes were highly robust, showing no deterioration in conductivity after taping for 100 times. Moreover, the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes successfully functioned as flexible electrodes; thus, light emitting diodes connected to the AgNP/paper electrodes could be operated under folding deformation without significant loss of brightness. As a potential application in flexible energy storage systems, a flexible supercapacitor based on the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes as the current collector was also demonstrated; it showed an excellent power density of 10.79–16.64 kW/kg and energy density of 1.85–4.65 Wh/kg. Several low-density crumpled paper-based materials were fabricated by varying both the volume fraction and the geometry and mechanical properties of paper sheets. Their 3D architecture was investigated using X-ray microtomography. Microstructure descriptors such as the pore size distribution, the mean curvature distribution and the volume fraction of ordered domains were finely analyzed. Their mechanical properties were also assessed using uniaxial compression tests. Our results showed that crumpled materials exhibited a particular porous microstructure with a reproducible mechanical behavior between foams and entangled fibrous materials. Their compressive behavior was characterized by successive elastic, strain-hardening and densification regimes. The effects of the geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties of the sheets on the process-induced microstructures and mechanical performances were discussed. In particular, a simple micromechanical approach was used to estimate analytically and from the 3D images the role of ridges and ordered domains on the mechanical properties of crumpled papers. The evolution of their Young's moduli and yield stresses were studied as a function of their relative densities and compared with experimental data available in the literature for other cellular materials, showing that crumpled papers are promising renewable alternatives to standard polymer foams for several engineering applications, due to the proper combination of mechanical properties, porosity, cost, and easy fabrication. Abstract: In this paper, conventional lightweight paper panels and paper tubes are analysed with respect to their suitability as furniture materials. In order to meet the growing demand of furniture industries to build light furniture, these two materials were tested and found to be suitable for creating very light constructions. Furthermore, increasing consumer demand to include sustainable materials in furniture-making is met by these two products. Joints between the two materials were developed and evaluated. It could be determined that specific adaptations are necessary in order to use paper materials for building furniture. The results of this study are a useful basis for developing construction principles between similar materials with other dimensions, e.g., for architecture. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Cellular structures currently applied in various engineering fields are mainly made of metals and papers. To engineering design textile composite cellular structures, in this paper, comparisons of various essential structural parameters affecting energy absorption and deformation are carried out. These parameters include the opening angle, the cell-wall length, the cell-wall thickness, the bonded cell-wall length, and the bonded cell-wall thickness. The structure geometries are created by in-house computer package which exports IGES files. Two-dimensional finite element analyses are conducted by MSC.Marc Mentat 2001 which imports these IGES files to numerical calculation. Orthotropic mechanical properties of the textile composite cellular structure laminate are applied for the finite element analyses. It is found that the opening angle, the cell-wall length and the cell-wall thickness affect significantly energy absorption and deformation. Strain energy density concentrations appear very seriously around the cell corners during quasi-static impact. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aramid fibers exhibit impressive mechanical properties, electrical insulation properties, and chemical stability. However, physical properties of the aramid paper are poor because of the chemical inertness and smooth surface of aramid fibers. This study reports a simple and efficient method for substantially improving the performance of the para-aramid/meta-aramid composite paper by introducing the N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/LiCl solution to induce partial dissolution or by adding the DMAc/LiCl/para-aramid solution to induce regeneration. Experimental results state that the tensile strength, specific strength, folding resistance, and interlayer bonding strength of the aramid paper are increased by 2.17, 2.13, 34.7, and 9.39 times, respectively, because of the dense and compact structure of the paper. Furthermore, the water resistance of the paper was also considerably improved. After immersing the paper samples in water for 24 h, their moisture absorption rate decreased to approximately 54% from approximately 143% for the original paper. Results indicate that partial dissolution/regeneration welding is a viable method for the efficient reinforcement of the aramid composite paper, providing additional possibilities for manufacturing the high-performance aramid paper-based materials.
