Orthotic and prosthetic materials should have good mechanical and antibacterial properties. Therefore, in our study, we consider four common foamed closed-cells and two solid polymeric materials regarding their mechanical behaviour and tendency for bacterial adhesion. For all materials, the surface roughness, hydrophobicity, zeta potential, tensile properties, hardness and CIE color parameters were measured. We found that foamed polymeric materials have higher roughness, higher hydrophobicity, lower Young's modulus, lower maximum tensile strength and lower hardness than solid materials. Bacterial adhesion test measurements based on observation by scanning electron microscopy show much a lower adhesion extent of S. aureus on solid materials than on foamed materials. The measured biophysical properties could be the key data for users to select the optimal materials. Nasl. z nasl. zaslona. Background: Considerations about implant surface wear and metal particles released during implant placement have been reported. However, little is known about implant surface macro- and microstructural components, which can influence these events. The aim of this research was to investigate accurately the surface morphology and chemical composition of commercially available dental implants, by means of multivariate and multidimensional statistical analysis, in order to predict their effect on wear onset and particle release during implant placement. Methods: The implant surface characterization (roughness, texture) was carried out through Confocal Microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis, the quantitative surface quality variables (amplitude and hybrid roughness parameters) were statistically analyzed through post hoc Bonferroni’s test for pair comparisons. Results: The parameters used by discriminant analysis evidenced several differences in terms of implant surface roughness between the examined fixtures. In relation to the observed surface quality, some of the investigated implants showed the presence of residuals due to the industrial surface treatments. Conclusions: Many structural components of the dental implant surface can influence the wear onset and particles released during the implant placement.

Oral dysfunction due to peri-implantitis and shortened life of implants has become a major concern. Self-care and removal of oral biofilms by professional mechanical tooth cleaning (PMTC) are indispensable for its prevention. However, if the surface roughness of the implant is increased, it may result in the adhesion of biofilm in the oral cavity. Therefore, the PMTC method can serve for long-term implant management. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) has been used as a cleaning method for implant surfaces, however, there is concern that the implant surface roughness could increase due to particle collision. Therefore, in this study, to establish a blasting cleaning method that does not adversely affect the implant surface, a new blasting cleaning method using agar particles was devised and its practical application examined. When the simulated stains were blasted with white alumina (WA) abrasive grains and CaCO3 particles, the simulated stains were almost removed, the surface roughness changed to a satin-finished surface—which was thought to be due to fine scratches—and the surface roughness increased. Most of the simulated stains were removed on the surface of the sample blasted with glycine particles and agar particles. Conversely, the gloss of the sample surface was maintained after cleaning, and the increase in surface roughness was slight.

The fundamental issue in surface metrology is to provide methods that can allow the establishment of correlations between measured topographies and performance or processes, or that can discriminate confidently topographies that are processed or performed differently. This article presents a set of topographies from two-staged processed steel rings, measured with a 3D contact profilometer. Data were captured individually from four different regions, namely the top, bottom, inner, and outer surfaces. The rings were manufactured by drop forging and hot rolling. Final surface texture was achieved by mass finishing with spherical ceramic media or cut wire. In this study, we compared four different multiscale methods: sliding bandpass filtering, three geometric length- and area-scale analyses, and the multiscale curvature tensor approach. In the first method, ISO standard parameters were evaluated as a function of the central wavelength and bandwidth for measured textures. In the second and third method, complexity and relative length and area were utilized. In the last, multiscale curvature tensor statistics were calculated for a range of scales from the original sampling interval to its forty-five times multiplication. These characterization parameters were then utilized to determine how confident we can discriminate (through F-test) topographies between regions of the same specimen and between topographies resulting from processing with various technological parameters. Characterization methods that focus on the geometrical properties of topographic features allowed for discrimination at the finest scales only. Bandpass filtration and basic height parameters Sa and Sq proved to confidently discriminate against all factors at all three considered bandwidths.

Roughness of surfaces is both surprisingly ubiquitous on all length scales and extremely relevant practically. The appearance of multi-scale roughness has been linked to avalanches and plastic deformation in metals. However, other, more-complex materials have mechanisms of plasticity that are significantly different from those of metals. We investigated the emergence of roughness in a polymer under compression. We performed molecular-dynamics simulations of a slab of solid polyvinyl alcohol that was compressed bi-axially, and we characterised the evolution of the surface roughness. We found significantly different behaviour than what was previously observed in similar simulations of metals. We investigated the differences and argue that the visco-elasticity of the material plays a crucial role.

The aim of this paper is to conduct an experimental study in order to obtain a roughness (Ra) prediction model for dry end-milling (with an AlTiCrSiN PVD-coated tool) of the Co–28Cr–6Mo and Co–20Cr–15W–10Ni biomedical alloys, a model that can contribute to more quickly obtaining the desired surface quality and shortening the manufacturing process time. An experimental plan based on the central composite design method was adopted to determine the influence of the axial depth of cut, feed per tooth and cutting speed process parameters (input variables) on the Ra surface roughness (response variable) which was recorded after machining for both alloys. To develop the prediction models, statistical techniques were used first and three prediction equations were obtained for each alloy, the best results being achieved using response surface methodology. However, for obtaining a higher accuracy of prediction, ANN models were developed with the help of an application made in LabView for roughness (Ra) prediction. The primary results of this research consist of the Co–28Cr–6Mo and Co–20Cr–15W–10Ni prediction models and the developed application. The modeling results show that the ANN model can predict the surface roughness with high accuracy for the considered Co–Cr alloys.

Surface work hardening is a process of deforming a material surface using a thin layer. It hardens and strengthens the surface while keeping the core relatively soft and ductile to absorb stresses. This study introduces a permanent magnate surface work hardening under two opposite permanent poles of a magnet to investigate its influence on a brass surface. The gap between the brass and the north magnet pole—fixed in the spindle of a vertical machine—was filled with martensitic stainless steel balls. The rotational speed and feed rates were 500–1250 rpm and 6–14 mm min−1, respectively. The novel method improved the surface hardness for all parameters by up to 112%, in favor of high speed, and also increased yield by approximately 10% compared to ground samples. Surface roughness showed higher values for all speed–feed rate combinations compared to the ground sample. Nevertheless, it showed better roughness than other treated conditions with high and low feed rates. The ultimate tensile strength and ductility remained unchanged for all conditions other than the untreated brass. A factorial design and nonlinear regression analysis were performed to predict the microhardness equation and effectiveness of the independent variable—speed and feed rate—for the proposed process.

Noise pollution from the environment may wreak havoc on a person’s wellbeing. Numerous sound-absorbing materials are employed to address these issues, one of which is textile-woven fabrics. In this study, 12 woven textiles with four different weave structures (plain, rib, sateen, and twill) and those formed from three distinct polyester yarns were evaluated for their sound absorption properties using an impedance tube. The study was conducted within the range of 80–5000 (Hz) frequency. Part of the investigation was measuring different layers of woven fabrics under three different measuring conditions. Firstly, only woven fabrics were evaluated. Following that, woven and nonwoven textiles were measured. The third variant, in addition to the woven fabrics, included an air gap. In addition, this study includes tests and analyses of the effect of roughness and porosity of the fabric structure on the effectiveness of noise reduction by woven fabrics. The absorption capacity of plain fabric is higher at lower frequencies than other woven fabrics. Other weave structures noise reduction efficiency is higher as the frequency range increases. The absorption efficiency of plain fabric decreases with fabric layering. Utilizing woven fabric combined with nonwoven fabric reduces noise more effectively than the air gap variant. Low surface roughness and a highly porous surface of the fabric indicate a high noise reduction coefficient (NRC).

The article is devoted to increasing the efficiency of electrical discharge machining of special-purpose items with composite electrode tools. The subject of research is the parameter of the roughness of the processed surface and the work of the electro-discharge machining (EDM) of 40Crsteel in various modes of electrical discharge machining. The aim of the work is to increase the efficiency of the process of copy-piercing electrical discharge machining of parts introduced into the composition of a special-purpose product and the use of electrode tools with the introduction of 20% graphite. Experimental studies were carried out using the method of a full factorial experiment with a subsequent regression analysis. The experiments were carried out using a copy-piercing Smart CNC EDM machine, a tool electrode, and a profile composite electrode. Empirical dependencies were established, reflecting the relationship between the processing modes, productivity, and surface roughness parameter after processing. A theoretical model for calculating the roughness parameter was developed, which makes it possible to predict the quality of the processed surface with a reliability of 10–15%. To ensure the required ratios of the quality of the processed surface at the maximum performance indicators, technological recommendations were obtained, as a result of which a 35% reduction in machine time was achieved when processing the “screw” part with the required indicators of surface quality.

Difficulty in debris removal and the transport of fresh dielectric into discharge gap hinders the process performance of electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. Therefore, in this work, an economical low frequency vibration platform was developed to improve the performance of EDM through vibration assistance. The developed vibratory platform functions on an eccentric weight principle and generates a low frequency vibration in the range of 0–100 Hz. The performance of EDM was evaluated in terms of the average surface roughness (Ra), material removal rate (MRR), and tool wear rate (TWR) whilst varying the input machining parameters viz. the pulse-on-time (Ton), peak current (Ip), vibration frequency (VF), and tool rotational speed (TRS). The peak current was found to be the most significant parameter and contributed by 78.16%, 65.86%, and 59.52% to the Ra, MRR, and TWR, respectively. The low frequency work piece vibration contributed to an enhanced surface finish owing to an improved flushing at the discharge gap and debris removal. However, VF range below 100 Hz was not found to be suitable for the satisfactory improvement of the MRR and reduction of the TWR in an electrical discharge drilling operation at selected machining conditions.

The aim of the article is to compare two classifications systems of engineering-geological environment sustainability in terms of its permeability evaluated on the basis of permeability coefficient. The first evaluated classification assumes a permeable environment to be a positive characteristic in the engineering-geological assessment, while the other considers an impermeable environment as favourable. The four fine-grained soil materials were selected, as they had very similar, almost identical grains-size distribution, but different microstructure characterized by grains sphericity, angularity, and roughness. At the same time, the influence of changes in the density of soil materials (density index 10%, 30%, 60%, 90%) was analysed. Permeability coefficient was determined using six methods (empirical formulae, laboratory and microscopic analysis). The laboratory method falling head test (FHT) was taken as a reference test that reflected the actual water flow through the soil. It was found that with an increase in grain angularity and roughness (and a decrease in sphericity), the permeability coefficient was decreasing and this trend culminated along with gradual compaction. Moreover, the research shows that unsuitable methods may classify soil materials into wrong engineering-geological permeability classes, which may have negative consequences during engineering-geological or geotechnical assessment and cause subsequent problems in foundation engineering. Accurate knowledge of the plastic zone of fatigue cracks is a very direct and effective way to quantify the damage of components subjected to cyclic loads. In this work, we propose an ultra-fine experimental characterisation of the plastic zone based on Vickers micro-indentations. The methodology is applied to different compact tension (CT) specimens made of aluminium alloy 2024-T351 subjected to increasing stress intensity factors. The experimental work and sensitivity analysis showed that polishing the surface to #3 μm surface finish and applying a 25 g-force load for 15 s produced the best results in terms of resolution and quality of the data. The methodology allowed the size and shape of both the cyclic and the monotonic plastic zones to be visualised through 2D contour maps. Comparison with Westergaard’s analytical model indicates that the methodology, in general, overestimates the plastic zone. Comparison with S355 low carbon steel suggests that the methodology works best for alloys exhibiting a high strain hardening ratio.

316L steel is predominantly used in manufacturing the components of high-pressure boilers, heat exchangers, aerospace engines, oil and gas refineries, etc. Its notable percentage of chromium offers resistance against corrosion and is mostly implemented in harsh environments. However, long-term exposure to these components in such environments can reduce their corrosion resistance property. Particularly at high temperatures, the oxide film formed on this type of steel reacts with the chloride, sulfides, sulfates, fluorides and forms intermetallic compounds which affect its resistance, followed by failures and losses. This work is focused on investigating the hardness, microstructure and corrosion resistance of the laser cladded Colmonoy-6 particles on the 316L steel substrate. The cladded specimens were dissected into cubic shapes and the microstructure present in the cladded region was effectively analyzed using the FESEM along with the corresponding EDS mapping. For evaluating the hardness of the cladded samples, the nanoindentation technique was performed using the TI980 TriboIndenter and the values were measured. The potentiodynamic polarization curves were plotted for both the substrate and clad samples at 0, 18, 42 and 70 h for revealing the corrosion resistance behavior. In addition, the EIS analysis was carried out to further confirm the resistance offered by the samples. The surface roughness morphology was evaluated after the corrosion process using the laser microscope, and the roughness values were measured and compared with the substrate samples. The result showed that the cladded samples experience greater hardness, lower values of surface roughness and provide better corrosion resistance when compared with substrate samples. This is due to the deposition of precipitates of chromium-rich carbide and borides that enhances the above properties and forms a stable passive film that resists corrosion during the corrosion process.

We report on a comprehensive study to evaluate fundamental properties of a hybrid manufacturing approach, combining selective laser melting and high speed milling, and to characterize typical geometrical features and conclude on a catalogue of design rules. As for any additive manufacturing approach, the understanding of the machine properties and the process behaviour as well as such a selection guide is of upmost importance to foster the implementation of new machining concepts and support design engineers. Geometrical accuracy between digitally designed and physically realized parts made of maraging steel and dimensional limits are analyzed by stripe line projection. In particular, we identify design rules for numerous basic geometric elements like walls, cylinders, angles, inclinations, overhangs, notches, inner and outer radii of spheres, chamfers in build direction, and holes of different shape, respectively, as being manufactured by the hybrid approach and compare them to sole selective laser melting. While the cutting tool defines the manufacturability of, e.g., edges and corners, the milling itself improves the surface roughness to Ra &lt, 2μm. Thus, the given advantages of this hybrid process, e.g., space-resolved and custom-designed roughness and the superior geometrical accuracy are evaluated. Finally, we exemplify the potential of this particular promising hybrid approach by demonstrating an injection mold with a conformal cooling for a charge socket for an electro mobile.

The surface of dental implants plays a vital role in early and more predictable osseointegration. SLA (sandblasted large grit and acid-etched) represents the most widely accepted, long-term clinically proven surface. Primarily, dental implants are manufactured by either commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) or Ti6Al4V ELI alloy. The acid etch behavior of CP-Ti is well known and its effects on the surface microstructure and physicochemical properties have been studied by various researchers in the past. However, there is a lack of studies showing the effect of acid etching parameters on the Ti6Al4V alloy surface. The requirement of the narrow diameter implants necessitates implant manufacturing from alloys due to their high mechanical properties. Hence, it is necessary to have an insight on the behavior of acid etching of the alloy surface as it might be different due to changed compositions and microstructure, which can further influence the osseointegration process. The present research was carried out to study the effect of acid etching parameters on Ti6Al4V ELI alloy surface properties and the optimization of process parameters to produce micro- and nanotopography on the dental implant surface. This study shows that the Ti6Al4V ELI alloy depicts an entirely different surface topography compared to CP-Ti. Moreover, the surface topography of the Ti6Al4V ELI alloy was also different when etching was done at room temperature compared to high temperature, which in turn affected the behavior of the cell on these surfaces. Both microns and nano-level topography were achieved through the optimized parameters of acid etching on Ti6Al4V ELI alloy dental implant surface along with improved roughness, hydrophilicity, and enhanced cytocompatibility.

This paper presents problems related to the machining of the surface layer. It is important that steel structures are used in material engineering and machine construction. Austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and two-phase corrosion resistant steel was widely used in the petrochemical and shipbuilding industries. Duplex stainless steel was used in sea water and acid installations. The shafts of centrifugal pumps can be made of stainless steel and are used in acid or seawater pumps. The surface layer of corrosion resistant steel shafts must have a low surface roughness. Machine elements made of stainless steel, and in particular of the duplex type, are difficult-to-cut materials. This article aims to study the effect of parameters on tool life and tool wear. The influence of technological parameters such as depth of cut, cutting speed, feed on maximum value tool wear is presented. The treatment of the surface layer was performed using carbide inserts. The highest wear and the lowest roughness were used as selection criteria. This problem is a significant issue due to the ability of the machine parts for the required reliable operation of devices and machines. To determine the degree of tool wear to increase of the surface layer quality after shaping DSS.

Successful biomaterials for bone tissue therapy must present different biocompatible properties, such as the ability to stimulate the migration and proliferation of osteogenic cells on the implantable surface, to increase attachment and avoid the risks of implant movement after surgery. The present work investigates the applicability of a three-dimensional (3D) model of bone cells (osteospheres) in the evaluation of osteoconductive properties of different implant surfaces. Three different titanium surface treatments were tested: machined (MA), sandblasting and acid etching (BE), and Hydroxyapatite coating by plasma spray (PSHA). The surfaces were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), confirming that they present very distinct roughness. After seeding the osteospheres, cell–surface interactions were studied in relation to cell proliferation, migration, and spreading. The results show that BE surfaces present higher densities of cells, leaving the aggregates towards than titanium surfaces, providing more evidence of migration. The PSHA surface presented the lowest performance in all analyses. The results indicate that the 3D model allows the focal analysis of an in vitro cell/surfaces interaction of cells and surfaces. Moreover, by demonstrating the agreement with the clinical data observed in the literature, they suggest a potential use as a predictive preclinical tool for investigating osteoconductive properties of novel biomaterials for bone therapy.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the possibility of using SLM additive technology to produce structures with specific surface morphological features. Qualitative and quantitative tests were conducted on samples fabricated by 3D printing from titanium (Ti6Al4V)-powder-based material and analysed in direct relation to the possibility of their use in medicine for the construction of femoral stem and models with a specific degree of porosity predicted by process-control in the self-decision-making 3D printing machine. This paper presents the results of the study, limitations of the method, recommendations that should be used in the design of finished products, and design proposals to support the fabrication process of 3D printers. Furthermore, the study contains an evaluation of how the printing direction affects the formation of certain structures on the printed surface. The research can be used in the development of 3D printing standardization, particularly in the consideration of process control and surface control.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films on polycarbonate (PC) substrates were patterned using the laser direct-write (LDW) technique to form an isolation line. The effect of the LDW parameters (power, pulse repetition rate, and defocusing distance) on the isolation line width, depth and roughness of the PC within the line was investigated. Additionally, the Taguchi method of experimental design was applied to determine the optimal parameters of LDW. Results showed that increasing the power led to an increase in the isolation line width and decrease in the surface roughness of the PC within the line. The increase in the pulse repetition rate and defocusing distance caused a decrease in the isolation line width. The optimal parameters were found to be A2B3C3, consisting of power of 5 W, pulse repetition rate of 100 kHz, and defocusing distance of +3 mm. Under these parameters, we obtained an isolation line width of 48.4 μm, and a surface roughness of Ra 38 nm of the PC within the isolation line. We confirmed that the ITO films separated by the isolation lines attained electrical isolation.

We investigate the influence of position, under large circular sputtering targets, on the final electrochemical performance of 35 mm diameter button solid oxide fuel cells with sputter-deposited Gadolinium doped Ceria barrier layers, positioned in order to almost cover the entirety of the area associated with a 120 × 80 mm2 industrial cell. We compare the results obtained via structural and morphological analysis to the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements performed on the button cells, disentangling the role of different parameters. The Atomic Force Microscopy analysis makes it possible to observe a decrease in the roughness values from the peripheral to the central zones under the sputtering target, with peak-to-valley roughness values, respectively, decreasing from 380 nm to 300 nm, while Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy show a dependence of the layer coverage from the position. The electrochemical performances of button cells with buffer layers of only 200 nm in thickness, and with negligible thickness gradients across them, show current density values of up to 478 mA/cm2 at 0.8 V and 650 °C, with an improvement of more than 67% with respect to button cells with standard (screen printed) buffer layers. These results point out the major influence exerted by parameters such as the thickness gradient and the coverage of the sputtered buffer layers in determining the final electrochemical performances.

In today’s developing aircraft and automotive industry, extremely durable and wear-resistant materials, especially in high temperatures, are applied. Due to this practical approach, conventional materials have been superseded by composite materials. In recent years, the application of metal matrix composites has become evident in industry 4.0. A study has been performed to analyze the surface roughness of aluminum matrix composites named Duralcan® during end milling. Two roughness surface parameters have been selected: arithmetical mean roughness value Ra and mean roughness depth Rz regarding the variable cutting speed. Due to the classification of aluminum matrix composites as hard-to-cut materials concerning excessive tool wear, this paper describes the possibility of surface roughness prediction using machine learning algorithms. In order to find the best algorithm, Classification and Regression Tree (CART) and pattern recognition models based on artificial neural networks (ANN) have been compared. By following the obtained models, the experiment shows the effectiveness of roughness prediction based on verification models. Based on experimental research, the authors obtained the coefficient R2 for the CART model 0.91 and the mean square error for the model ANN 0.11.

This article deals with electrical discharge machining (EDM) of an alnico alloy, focusing on how key process parameters affect the surface finish. The experiments were conducted using a BP93L EDM machine. The Box–Behnken design was employed to study the effects of three factors, i.e., spark current, pulse-on time, and pulse-off time, each at three levels, on the surface quality. A specially designed system was employed to increase the effectiveness of the machining process by imparting an additional rotary motion to the tool and an additional rotary motion to the workpiece. The aim was to efficiently remove the eroded metal particles and create a surface with smaller craters. The workpiece surface roughness was measured with a Talysurf CCI lite non-contact profiler. During this precision machining process, the arithmetical mean height (Sa) was less than 1 µm. The surface quality was examined also using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). The experimental data were analyzed by means of Statistica to determine and graphically represent the relationships between the input and output parameters.

The current scientific literature lacks an adequate description of hardware used to machine timber. Traditional woodworking and metals fabrication consists of tungsten carbide (TC) inserts. In this work, the authors investigate the influence of cutting tool geometry on the resulting surface roughness of timber samples. A variety of wood types were used in these studies to provide broad information on the correlation between the cutting tools used and resulting surface morphology. The cutting tools were prepared on a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe and roughness average (Ra) and average maximum peak to valley height of the profile (Rz) parameters were measured by contact stylus. The tip radius of the TC inserts used was determined to be the most significant factor that impacted Ra and Rz. In summary, we found that the tip radius of the TC insert was inversely proportional to the roughness level, indicating that a flatter TC insert cutting end results in a smoother wood surface.

The applications of coated mild steels are gaining significant attention in versatile industrial areas because of their better mechanical properties, anticorrosive behavior, and reproducibility. The life period of this steel reduces significantly under relative motion in the presence of friction, which is associated with the loss of billion-dollar every year in industry. Productivity is hampered, and economic growth is declined. Several pieces of research have been conducted throughout the industries to seeking the processes of frictional reduction. This study is attributed to the tribological behavior of electroplated mild steel under various operating parameters. The efficiency of commercial lubricant and self-lubrication characteristics of coated layer plays a significant role in the reduction of friction. The reciprocating and simultaneous motion in relation to pin as well as disc are considered during experimentation. The lubricating effects in conjunction with motions are responsible for compensating the friction and wear at the desired level. During frictional tests, the sliding velocity and loads are changed differently. The changes in roughness after frictional tests are observed. The coated and rubbing surfaces are characterized using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis. The coating characteristics are analyzed by EDS (Energy Disperse Spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and XRD (X-ray diffraction analysis) methods. The lubrication, reciprocating motion, and low velocity result in low friction and wear. The larger the imposed loads, the smaller the frictional force, and the larger the wear rate. The machine learning (ML) concept is incorporated in this study to identify the patterns of datasets spontaneously and generate a prediction model for forecasting the data, which are out of the experimental range. It can be desired that the outcomes of this research will contribute to the improvement in versatile engineering fields, such as automotive, robotics, and complex motion-based mechanisms where multidimensional motion cannot be ignored.

This article presents a method of reusing aluminum scrap from alloy 6082 using the hot extrusion process. Aluminum chips from milling and turning processes, having different sizes and morphologies, were cold pressed into briquettes prior to hot pressing at 400 °C at a ram speed of 2 mm/s. The study of mechanical properties combined with observations of the microstructures, as well as tests of density, hardness and electrical conductivity were carried out. On the basis of the results, the possibility of using the plastic consolidation method and obtaining materials with similar to a solid ingot mechanical properties, density and electrical conductivity was proven. The possibility of modifying the surface of consolidated aluminum scrap was tested in processes examples: polishing, anodizing and coloring. For this purpose, a number of analyses and tests were carried out: comparison of colors on color histograms, roughness determination, SEM and chemical composition analysis. It has been proven there are differences in the surface treatment of the solid material and that of scrap consolidation, and as such, these differences may significantly affect the final quality.

The bond strength between ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and normal-strength concrete (NC) plays an important role in governing the composite specimens’ overall behaviors. Unfortunately, there are still no widely accepted formulas targeting UHPC–NC interfacial strength, either in their specifications or in research papers. To this end, this study constructs an experimental database, consisting of 563 and 338 specimens for splitting and slant shear tests, respectively. Moreover, an additional 35 specimens for “improved” slant shear tests were performed, which could circumvent concrete crushing and trigger interfacial debonding. Additionally, for the first time in our tests, the effect of casting sequence on UHPC–NC bond strength was identified. Based on the database, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is proposed with the following inputs: namely, the normal stress perpendicular to the interface, the interface roughness, and the compressive strengths of the UHPC and NC materials. Based on the ANN analyses, the explicit expression of UHPC–NC bond strength is proposed, which significantly lowers the prediction error. To be fully compatible with the specifications, the conventional shear-friction formula is modified. By splitting the total force into adhesion and friction forces, the modified formula additionally takes the casting sequence into account. Although sacrificing accuracy to some extent compared to the ANN model, the modified formula relies on a solid physical basis and its accuracy is enhanced significantly compared to the existing formulas in specifications or research papers.

In metal-cutting processes, the interaction between the tool and workpiece is highly nonlinear and is very sensitive to small variations in the process parameters. This causes difficulties in controlling and predicting the resulting surface finish quality of the machined surface. In this work, vibration signals along the major cutting force direction in the turning process are measured at different combinations of cutting speeds, feeds, and depths of cut using a piezoelectric accelerometer. The signals are processed to extract features in the time and frequency domains. These include statistical quantities, Fast Fourier spectral signatures, and various wavelet analysis extracts. Various feature selection methods are applied to the extracted features for dimensionality reduction, followed by applying several outlier-resistant unsupervised clustering algorithms on the reduced feature set. The objective is to ascertain if partitions created by the clustering algorithms correspond to experimentally obtained surface roughness data for specific combinations of cutting conditions. We find 75% accuracy in predicting surface finish from the Noise Clustering Fuzzy C-Means (NC-FCM) and the Density-Based Spatial Clustering Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithms, and upwards of 80% accuracy in identifying outliers. In general, wrapper methods used for feature selection had better partitioning efficacy than filter methods for feature selection. These results are useful when considering real-time steel turning process monitoring systems.

Surface roughness measurements of machined parts are usually performed off-line after the completion of the machining operation. The objective of this work is to develop a surface roughness prediction method based on the processing of vibration signals during steel end milling operation performed on a vertical CNC machining center. The milling cuts were run under varying conditions (such as the spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut). This is a first step in the attempt to develop an online milling process monitoring system. The study presented here involves the analysis of vibration signals using statistical time parameters, frequency spectrum, and time-frequency wavelet decomposition. The analysis resulted in the extraction of 245 features that were used in the evolutionary optimization study to determine optimal cutting conditions based on the measured surface roughness of the milled specimen. Three feature selection methods were used to reduce the extracted feature set to smaller subsets, followed by binarization using two binarization methods. Three evolutionary algorithms—a genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization and two variants, differential evolution and one of its variants, have been used to identify features that relate to the “best” surface finish measurements. These optimal features can then be related to cutting conditions (cutting speed, feed rate, and axial depth of cut). It is shown that the differential evolution and its variant performed better than the particle swarm optimization and its variants, and both differential evolution and particle swarm optimization perform better than the canonical genetic algorithm. Significant differences are found in the feature selection methods too, but no difference in performance was found between the two binarization methods.

In recent years, several studies have validated the use of piezoelectric materials for in situ biological stimulation, opening new interesting insights for bio-electric therapies. In this work, we investigate the morphological properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in the form of microstructured films after temperature-driven phase transition. The work aims to investigate the correlations between morphology at micrometric (i.e., spherulite size) and sub-micrometric (i.e., phase crystallinity) scale and in vitro cell response to validate their use as bio-functional interfaces for cellular studies. Morphological analyses (SEM, AFM) enabled evidence of the peculiar spherulite-like structure and the dependence of surface properties (i.e., intra-/interdomain roughness) upon process conditions (i.e., temperature). Meanwhile, chemical (i.e., FTIR) and thermal (i.e., DSC) analyses highlighted an influence of casting temperature and polymer solution on apolar to polar phases transition, thus affecting in vitro cell response. Accordingly, in vitro tests confirmed the relationship between micro/sub-microstructural properties and hMSC response in terms of adhesion and viability, thus suggesting a promising use of PVDF films to model, in perspective, in vitro functionalities of cells under electrical stimuli upon mechanical solicitation.

Belt grinding of flat surfaces of typical parts made of steel and alloys, such as grooves, shoulders, ends, and long workpieces, is a good alternative to milling. Several factors can influence the belt grinding process of flat surfaces of metals, such as cutting speed and pressure. In this work, the importance of pressure in the belt grinding was investigated in terms of technological and experimental aspects. The grinding experiments were performed on structural alloy steel 30KhGSN2/30KhGSNA, structural carbon steel AISI 1045, corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant stainless steel AISI 321, and heat-resistant nickel alloy KHN77TYuR. The performance of the grinding belt was investigated in terms of surface roughness, material removal rate (MRR), grinding belt wear, performance index. Estimated indicators of the belt grinding process were developed: cutting ability, reduced cutting ability for belt grinding of steels and heat-resistant alloy. It was found that with an increase in pressure p, the surface roughness of the processed surface Ra decreased while the tool wear VB and MRR increased. With a decrease in plasticity and difficulty of machinability, the roughness, material removal rate, reduced cutting capacity (Performance index) qper, material removal Q decreased, and the tool wear VB increased. The obtained research results can be used by technologists when creating belt grinding operations for steels and alloys to ensure the required performance is met.

With the recent significant advances in micro- and nanoscale fabrication techniques, deposition of diamond-like carbon films on stainless steel substrates has been experimentally achieved. However, the underlying mechanism for the formation of film microstructures has remained elusive. In this study, the growth processes of diamond-like carbon films on AISI 316L substrate are studied via the molecular dynamics method. Effects of substrate bias voltage on the structure properties and sp3 hybridization ratio are investigated. A diamond-like carbon film with a compact structure and smooth surface is obtained at 120 V bias voltage. Looser structures with high surface roughness are observed in films deposited under bias voltages of 0 V or 300 V. In addition, sp3 fraction increases with increasing substrate bias voltage from 0 V to 120 V, while an opposite trend is obtained when the bias voltage is further increased from 120 V to 300 V. The highest magnitude of sp3 fraction was about 48.5% at 120 V bias voltage. The dependence of sp3 fraction in carbon films on the substrate bias voltage achieves a high consistency within the experiment results. The mechanism for the dependence of diamond-like carbon structures on the substrate bias voltage is discussed as well.

Wear-resistant coatings development is progressively increasing steeply due to their advantages when applied to mechanical components subjected to abrasive and destructive environments. Titanium nitride (TiN) coating is typically used to enlarge tools and components’ service life and improve their surface quality. On the other hand, AlTiSiN coating intends to be applied to more aggressive environments such as spatial satellites components exposed to solar radiation, extremely high temperatures, and random particles impact. In this work, specimens of Inconel 718 (IN718) were fabricated via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and physical vapour deposition (PVD)-deposited with TiN and AlTiSiN as coatings to mechanically and chemically characterise their surface. In this respect, microhardness testing and chemical analysis via glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) were performed. Later, roughness and wear behaviour analyses were carried out to evaluate the mechanical performance of both coatings and their surface and morphological features. The experimental observations allowed the analysis of both studied coatings by comparing them with the substrate processed via LPBF.

This work presents preliminary results regarding improving the mechanical, wear and protective properties (hardness, coefficient of friction, corrosion resistance) of AISI 304 stainless steel surfaces by open atmosphere cold plasma surface treatment method. Comparative evaluations of the morphological, corrosion resistance, mechanical and tribological properties for different periods of treatment (using N2 gas for cold plasma generation in an open atmosphere) were performed. AFM surface analyses have shown significant surface morphology modifications (average roughness, FWHM, surface skewness and kurtosis coefficient) of the treated samples. An improved corrosion resistance of the N2 treated surfaces in open atmosphere cold plasma could be observed using electrochemical corrosion tests. The mechanical tests have shown that the surface hardness (obtained by instrumented indentation) is higher for the 304 stainless steel samples than it is for the un-treated surface, and it decreases gradually for higher penetration depths. The kinetic coefficient of friction (obtained by ball-on-disk wear tests) is significantly lower for the treated samples and increases gradually to the value of the un-treated surface. The low friction regime length is dependent on the surface treatment period, with a longer cold plasma nitriding process leading to a significantly better wear behavior.

With the advent of the industrial revolution 4.0, the goal of the manufacturing industry is to produce a large number of products in relatively less time. This study applies the Taguchi L27 orthogonal array methodological paradigm along with response surface design. This work optimizes the process parameters in the turning of Aluminum Alloy 7075 using a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. The optimal parameters influenced the rate of metal removal, the roughness of the machined surface, and the force of cutting. This experimental investigation deals with the optimization of speed (800 rpm, 1200 rpm, and 1600 rpm) and feed (0.15, 0.20, and 0.25 mm/rev) in addition to cutting depth (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) on the turning of Aluminum 7075 alloy in a CNC machine. The outcome in terms of results such as the removal rate of material (maximum), roughness on the machined surface (minimum), along with cutting force (least amount) were improved by the L27 array Taguchi method. There were 27 specimens of Al7075 alloy produced as per the array, and the corresponding responses were measured with the help of various direct contact and indirect contact sensors. Results were concluded all the way through diagrams of main effects in favor of signal-to-noise ratios and diagrams of surfaces with contour diagrams for various combinations of responses.
