Construction and installation work at large industrial sites are a major challenge both in terms of meeting deadlines and ensuring healthy and safe working conditions. Force majeure circumstances that require rapid and adequate response often occur at complex sites. Construction site safety is one of the most important things during a construction project. The main reason is the accidents that occur. Presented paper’s target is to shed more light on some good practices, which can lead to improved occupational health and safety. Author experienced such practices in specific conditions during processing plant construction. Such facilities are characterized by installation of special large-scale mineral processing equipment, including work in explosive atmosphere. Moreover, outdoor work in severe weather conditions is performed very often. Another very important, and at the same time difficult task, is coordinating many people, working for contractors and subcontractors. Some of the most important factors in such practice, which have a key role in the successful realization of that type of project will be discussed.

The construction industry has a huge contribution to economic growth in the world, including Indonesia. Massive urban development occurs as a result of significant population growth. Along with the rapid development, safety issue in the construction site is often neglected. In 2017, there were found that more than 123 thousand cases of construction site accidents have happened. This numbers has increased by almost 20% compared with the number of accidents in 2016. The purpose of this study is to identify significant safety indicators affecting the construction project in Tangerang Selatan. Based on the literature review, a list of 22 safety indicators was produced. These indicators were used in the questionnaire. The main contribution of this paper is providing safety indicators ranking that affects construction work around Tangerang Selatan. The subject of this research includes contractor and consultant experts who work in construction project around Tangerang Selatan. From the survey, we obtained 41 valid responses which then were analyzed using FAII. As a result, we found that the indicator “the company provides safety training for each worker to act safely” has been considered as the most important safety indicator. It is followed by “the contractor always provides PPE such as helmets, boots, gloves, masks, and other tools that can get me out of an accident”. Then the third result is “there are safeguards on the project site; safety signs, fire extinguishers, and security fences”.

Human resource management framework being one of the issue across global construction industries. It is a major concern in the construction industry because inefficiency, delay and cost from construction work could be affected and causing great losses to individuals and organizations. Therefore, resource management framework is changing the way resource management can be approached. Most of the construction companies around the world are implementing human resource management systems to reduce cost, eliminate delaying project, and to provide an efficient framework in their construction site. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of implementing human resource management framework in construction site. The methodology included is a combination of literature review, market studies and detailed questionnaire survey before starting the actual survey, a pilot study for this questionnaire was done, which confirms its acceptance. Based on findings from the researcher, most of the company and contractor firms have awareness about management of resource at construction site as human resource management is a major concern on construction industries.

Hazard and operability study (HAZOP), which is applied to identify the hazards of a system and its operability, finds application in identifying unsafe behaviors of operators after redefining the “guide words” and “process requirements”. In this paper, unsafe behaviors of lifting workers on the construction site and the risk they brought were identified using the redefined HAZOP. Then, the causes of these behaviors were revealed after sorting and analysing these behaviors.. Finally, based on these causes, appropriate management measures were developed for effectively reducing accidents in lifting operations.

The paper discuss the profit made by construction sites operated by one company as a measure of their effectiveness. The different types of cost, that should have been covered by income, were described. The distinction between indirect cost made on building site and indirect cost made by headquarter of a company were shown, as well as necessity of including both on them in calculating building site effectiveness. Three different method of assigning company overhead cost to the building site were shown and discussed. Their significant influence on building site profitability was emphasised and calculated for exemplary values. The necessity of calculating full cost for each building site operating by one company was discussed in the article too, by showing which information is necessary for a company management, a building site management and for company shareholders.

The work is devoted to the study of changes in the time of mobility of concrete mixtures, which are used for commercial concrete with monolithic construction. The in-situ concrete quality depends on the uniformity, viability and workability of the concrete mix intended for the transportation, unloading and workability at the construction site. One of the techniques used for the solution of this problem can be step-by-step addition of chemical admixtures or introduction of setting retarders whose efficiency is expressed in an increased resiliency of the concrete mix that is extended by two and more hours. Each solution has its advantages and drawbacks; therefore the efficiency can only be estimated under specific conditions taking into account the cost of concrete mix and opportunities for the realization of each individual solution. Were received results showing the presence of a problem of mobility loss of concrete mixtures with chemical additives of high water-reducing action. The use of such technological techniques as increasing the initial mobility and gradual introduction of supplements to superplasticizer proved to be effective technological solutions.

Construction sector is an important sector and contributed significantly to national development. However, this sector poses higher risk to accident. This is due to fact that construction site can be considered as a dangerous zone to workers and to the public. Due to the variety of cases occurs on site, the contractor will usually have to pay the cost related to accidents in the form of higher insurance premium. Despite various measures, accidents still occur at construction sites. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is one of the important means to protect the wearer from hazards in the workplace. Since this equipment is the last frontier of the wearer from worksite hazards, it is important to select it based on the job scope and the intended protection. Therefore, this study was formulated to find out the level of knowledge and awareness of construction workers on PPE usage. It was also important to know what make the workers would want or do not want to use the PPE. It was found in this study that the level of awareness and knowledge among workers on the proper use of PPE is moderate. Construction sites accident can be further be reduced with proper implementation of PPE voluntarily by all workers.

This paper is evaluating the factors effecting the increasing in the numbers of foreign workers on site. A critical review of the literature was abstract because of the Malaysian economics is booming and the characteristics of the construction industry itself make the foreigners comfortable works on site. This paper discusses the results from the conducted questionnaire survey among the contractors in Selangor. Based on the average index, there are several factors identified by the respondents such as shortage of manpower, reluctant of local labour, project increased the demand for labour and accelerating economic development. This factor will improve the decision making process in recruiting labour on site.

Construction Supply chain management comprised of the network of organization involved in the different processes and activities which produce the material, components and services that come together to design, procurement and deliver a building. It also consists of different organizations involved in the construction process including client/owner, designer, contractor, subcontractor and suppliers. This paper shall present on the implementation of supply chain management in construction and the effectiveness of practicing SCM in construction site. A field study is done from the viewpoint of contractor and consultant then analysed by using average index methods and presented in a statistical analysis. From the analysis, it reveals that effectiveness of practicing the SCM give a lot of good performances and granted benefits to contractor. The statistical analysis produced first ranking effectiveness of SCM is can minimize waste of material and labor for construction project.

The involvement of the government in terms of occupational safety and health through the laws and regulations issued, it is a reference for the stakeholders in the construction industry in carrying out its role and expected performance of safety and health will be better with the existing laws and regulations. these laws and regulations. However, the reality is not in accordance with expectations. The level of work accidents occurring in the construction industry is still relatively high. This study aims to identify stakeholders in building a safety culture in the construction sector. The method used in this research is using survey questionnaire and interview to safety expert. The result of this research is to build safety culture in construction sector is divided into two external and internal stakeholders where the Minister of Manpower, Director General of Supervision of Labor and Occupational Safety and Health Supervisory Supervisory Director is a stakeholder who has the power and interest that most influence in establishing safety culture in the construction sector

Ensuring the safety of buildings and other construction works is a major public concern. This article gives an overview of the mechanisms and structures put in place in Europe, and more specifically Germany, to ensure safety in construction. The article identifies major risk factors and shows how the European and German governmental and private systems respond to these risks. The questions addressed include: How do regulators ensure the use of safe construction products and designs, and how is the execution of construction works monitored?

Necessity of construction automation through BIM framework could no longer be set aside if we were to remain relevant and con-current in the ever-changing, technology-driven construction practices. The functions of construction safety management, i.e., hazard identification, assessment and control for construction works could certainly benefit from this technology through safety work automation which enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of the required safety processes. This paper aims to outline a research project for developing both information and technical requirements for BIM-based system via literature review, questionnaire survey, focus group, and prototype realization. The project results, to be validated by real projects, will act as solid platform for developing working model that can be employed at various project settings and safety circumstances. It will support the decision-making process with respect to safety enhancement and accident mitigation at the construction site.

According to the fact that the traditional manual management method can not solve the problem of frequent accidents in the engineering construction process, the integrated scheme of safety prevention based on BIM and RFID is put forward, and the principle and technical feasibility of the integrated scheme are analyzed. Based on the integration technology scheme, the multi-layer architecture design pattern is adopted, and the software hierarchy of the integration system is designed in detail. On this basis, the integrated application network for engineering construction safety control is analyzed and designed by using the technology based on BIM and RFID. The research results of this paper provide a feasible technical reference scheme for the automatic identification and dynamic monitoring and early warning of the hidden dangers in the construction site.

Construction accident can be caused by internal and external factors such as worker fatigue and unsafe project environment. Tight schedule of construction project forcing construction worker to work overtime in long period. This situation leads to worker fatigue. This paper proposes a model to predict construction worker fatigue based on system dynamic (SD). System dynamic is used to represent correlation among internal and external factors and to simulate level of worker fatigue. To validate the model, 93 construction workers whom worked in a high rise building construction projects, were used as case study. The result shows that excessive workload, working elevation and age, are the main factors lead to construction worker fatigue. Simulation result also shows that these factors can increase worker fatigue level to 21.2% times compared to normal condition. Beside predicting worker fatigue level this model can also be used as early warning system to prevent construction worker accident

Construction safety monitoring is an important approach to prevent collapse of scaffold shoring system during concrete formwork. In this article, the causes of the collapse of scaffold shoring system are investigated. A monitoring system based on the Internet of Things(IoT) is then proposed, consisting of wireless sensors, wireless monitor, wireless alarm, monitoring cloud platform and mobile client. The monitoring system is then put into practical application and has successfully detected the malfunction of the monitored system, which proves the efficiency and reliability of the monitoring system.

The advancement of computer technology allows the construction education to exploit the various teaching strategies. Unlike other engineering subjects, teaching construction subjects often requires media beyond traditional class room environment that would enable the creation of field-like construction atmosphere. Construction visualization allows students to exercise and experience various field settings that are too difficult to deliver using traditional teaching approach. This paper aims at describing an attempt to develop and implement building information modelling (BIM) as a platform for teaching construction safety. Using BIM technology students can learn various aspects of safety in construction, which are typically hidden from project documents. Visualization features in BIM are utilized by students to help them identifying potential hazard, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions in a simulated construction project. The result shows that students are more aware and capable to identify any potential hazard and related safety regulations of construction plan and design pertinent to specific site conditions than that if they were only equipped with a set of construction drawings and specifications.

BIM is continuously changing the way construction can be approached, from design, scheduling, costing to facilities management. However, even though construction safety is a worldwide issue, and though previous, yet limited, studies have proven its great potential, BIM has not been extended to include automated construction safety management functions, i.e., hazard identification, assessment and control for construction works. In fact, as many as 71% of safety incidents can be prevented by safety considerations at design stage. Automation via BIM is the key to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of safety management, but development of Safety Information Modelling (SIM) is the key pre-requisite. This paper aims to outline a research project for developing both information and technical requirements for SIM via questionnaire survey, focus group, and real case studies. The project results, to be validated by real projects, will act as solid platform for developing:- i) Practical guidance to construction and safety professionals on the types of safety management a SIM can conduct, and the ways of utilizing the safety information in a SIM model [based on the systematic SIM information requirements (e.g., object identification, geometry attributes, safety rules)]; and ii) Overall guidance to software developers to develop appropriate SIM tools for different scenarios [based on the systematic SIM technical requirements (e.g., model information exchange, visualization, conflict analysis process for risk assessment, reliability)].
