OurStage launched last year as an online network where musicians could meet each other, become part of a community, and essentially use the Web as an online talent show. In a natural next step to its artists’ network, OurStage has launched a marketplace that matches talent with venues. Musicians can submit their electronic press kits and become part of the searchable database that venues can tap into in order to find musicians to play gigs. The marketplace partially arose from a mutually beneficial partnership between OurStage and Live Nation, the concert ticketing service, in which OurStage artists are chosen by local music fans via Live Nation and asked to perform in their town. Below is a Q&A session I had with OurStage CEO Ben Campbell, who provided more details on the new marketplace and the involvement of Live Nation as a partner. Kristen Nicole of Mashable: For the partnership with LiveNation, what exactly does this entail in regards to the new Marketplace on OurStage? Ben Campbell: Because [LiveNation] shares our passion for helping launch the careers of the next generation of great Artists, they have agreed to allow top ranked OurStage acts access to their premier venues in a number of select locations on a trial basis for the coming year. This might involve an act being an opener for a major Artist or playing on a second stage at a famous venue. Based on availability, these gigs will be offered by Live Nation via the OurStage Marketplace. Kristen Nicole: What search and filter capabilities do you have for bands and venues to find each other within the new marketplace? Campbell: Marketplace allows venues, talent buyers, artists, and other industry professionals to find great local artists and screen them based on things like their overall ranking by the Fans, their music genre, their geographic location, their costs, etc. And then reach out to and connect with those artists via the Marketplace platform. Artists can find venues, and other opportunities by looking at the Gigs posted on the Marketplace job boards. Kristen Nicole: Any matchmaking capabilities for a semi-automated process for bands and venues to find each other? Campbell: There is no human interaction on the part of OurStage in this process. So in a way the entire process is semi-automated. The fans judge and rank the best Artists based on their abilities/quality of their music via the site’s game-resistant judging engine. The talent buyers, venues, etc. can then screen interested Artists via a number of search criteria (see prior question) and by reviewing their (free) detailed EPKs, and ultimately message the Artists that are chosen via the system. Kristen Nicole: What’s the validation process with the OurStage marketplace that allows the quality artists to stand out from the rest? Campbell: The primary validation process is the Artist’s overall Mojo score - which is totaled from a number of different criteria - the main one being their ranking, as determined by the Fans. On OurStage Artists are ranked (not rated as in 1 to 5 stars). This is done via a process known as peer relative ranking - where all items are judged in relation to another item. The most important anti-gaming feature of which is that Fans cannot choose the item they are judging. They can choose the Genre of music in which they want to judge (ie. rock, hip hop, country) but once they are judging in that genre they cannot pick the items being judged. The items (songs) presented to the Fan are all picked for them by the engine. Thus, it’s extremely difficult to find one’s friend’s item (or one’s own) in order to try to unfairly rank it higher. In addition, an Artists’ EPK shows not only great examples of their work but also places they’ve played, endorsements from the press and other venues, etc. ---Related ... [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Vois, the social network that started out as an online forum for the mature crowd, has been expanding and tweaking its approach to attract a wider range of users and provide more useful applications within its network, such as media reviews, greeting cards and an e-commerce section where users can take advantage of their Vois profiles to sell products. The latest feature Vois is launching, however, has more potential impact than any of the applications Vois has added since its launch last year. Vois is getting into the outsourcing and off-shoring industry with a new segment of its network. This new feature won’t go live for another few weeks, and Vois is keeping pretty tight wraps on access, so no one has seen firsthand how this new feature will work. This social network is hoping to introduce social commerce to a global audience that promotes freelancers as well as on-demand manufacturing services within an online market. With Vois as a facilitator for this online outsourcing market, it’s a true experiment in a new concept of social commerce. Founder Craig Arganoff hopes that its “revolutionary new features will help the world conduct business efficiently in a social way that has never been done before.” The concept of creating a network that gives freelancers a marketing platform isn’t new–there are established networks like Guru and newer networks like CrowdSPRING already entertaining this model. Fully integrating it within an existing social network is a different approach that’s been difficult to implement in other markets because of issues concerning the convergence of outsourced work with a social network initially designed for basic communications amongst solidified relationships. So will it work? In terms of the commerce aspect of Vois, this appears to be an extension of what the company has been working on with its Shopping section. Aside from establishing a social online market where individuals can leverage such a platform to combine social and commercial aspects of the networking world, Vois is also creating a niche where these individuals can have a place to form their own career paths in a way they see fit. We’ve seen the success of LinkedIn, and we’re well aware that the Web has enabled people from all over the world to better take advantage of the global market. So combining the social, professional and commercial aspects of networking is a concept that’s been a long time in the making. I think the presence of an all-inclusive network is going to become a standard of some sort, whether it’s directly through the network or through some third party service that combines various attributes of multiple networks out there.
