This study aimed to identify ocean- and land-based sources of nutrients to the coral reef communities surrounding the Southern Caribbean islands Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao (ABC islands). The composition of water masses around these islands were assessed to depths up to 300 m and three distinct overlying water masses were identified, separated by mixing zones. A fluctuating pycnocline separating surface from deeper (>∼50 m) water indicated the presence of internal waves. Nutrient profiles were typical of tropical waters with oligotrophic waters occurring above the pycnocline and a deep chlorophyll-a maximum (DCM) just below it (∼65 m). Concentrations of dissolved nutrients differed among islands. Inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphate concentrations were respectively lowest around Bonaire and Curaçao. The Baltic Sea highly susceptible to the proliferation of Phytoplankton blooms. Present work examines the long-term trend and spatio-temporal variability of satellite derived chlorophyll concentration (Chl a) in the Baltic Sea during the period 2004-2021. Furthermore, the influence of water quality and meteorological parameters on Baltic Sea primary productivity has been analyzed using robust Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Granger Causality statistical test. Statistically significant increasing trend in chlorophyll a concentration is observed in the Baltic Sea at the 95 % confidence interval. GAM model reveals that the most significant controlling factor is sea surface temperature (p < 0.0001), followed by nitrate and phosphate. Both GAM and Granger Causality tests confirm that water quality parameters are the major drivers in limiting the growth of Phytoplankton blooms in the Baltic Sea. Advanced satellite technology and algorithms are making substantial progress in meeting the need for improved environmental monitoring of coastal waterways. Integrating high-resolution satellites with in-situ radiometric equipment is essential for effectively monitoring algal blooms and managing coastal resources. Our work has built a model to examine geographical and temporal fluctuations in chlorophyll-a concentration in Bushehr Bay, Persian Gulf, Iran, using radiometric data and high-resolution remote sensing. In this study, we used twenty-four bio-optical features for analysis. After evaluating and selecting the most important features, we used the top five features to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration using machine learning algorithms. Likewise, the model could effectively investigate our climatology of chlorophyll in the study area. Our findings provide a dependable approach to monitor the environmental effect of chlorophyll-a and enhance water quality and regional management of primary production in coastal waters. In our comprehensive study spanning 2003 to 2011 in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), we evaluated the top-down and bottom-up drivers that regulate the temporal fluctuations of the mesozooplankton community. Throughout the study period, the zooplankton community exhibited a distinct seasonal pattern, with abundances reaching their peak during the spring-summer months following a winter minimum, closely associated with environmental factors such as precipitation, water temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration. Strikingly, the community also underwent significant interannual variations, with the lowest abundance maxima occurring in 2009 and 2011, and the highest in 2005 and 2008. These profound shifts coincided with population surges of Aurelia coerulea and extreme rainfall events, suggesting a complex interplay between top-down and bottom-up forces. Climate change is expected to intensify tropical cyclones (TCs), requiring a deeper understanding of their ecosystem impacts. This study investigated TC Biparjoy impact on parameters from June 6 to 19, 2023, using satellite and vertical profiles. Initially, Chlorophyll-a levels remained steady but surged above 4 mg/m 3 after the high-intensity phase, indicating increased phytoplankton biomass. Sea surface temperature (SST) initially exceeded 32 °C, favoring cyclone intensification, but dropped below 26 °C post-high-intensity phase due to mixing and upwelling of cooler waters. The SST gradient exceeded 0.15 °C/km post-cyclone. Elevated sea surface height around 0.5 m offshore and over 1 m along the coast was recorded. Wind stress values exceeding 0.4 N/m 3 were observed during the high-intensity phase. Vertical profile showed uplifted low-temperature, nutrient-rich waters, enhancing phytoplankton productivity, supported by increased nitrate (>10 mmol/m 3 ) and phosphate (>1.2 mmol/m 3 ) levels. During the spring and summer of 2021, two investigations were conducted in the northern Chinese sea by using the high-performance liquid chromatography with the pigment-based chemotaxonomic tool PIGMENTUM. Results showed that the average chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration during spring was significantly higher (p < 0.01) than that during summer. 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin-containing algae, alloxanthin-containing algae (ACA), and fucoxanthin-containing algae (FCA) were the main pigment groups in spring, whereas zeaxanthin-containing algae (ZCA) and peridinin-containing algae (PeCA) were dominated in summer. Five ecological provinces were divided, and the phytoplankton biomass (Chl a) in Province V was the lowest. Redundancy analysis showed that ACA, FCA, and PeCA were positively correlated with nutrients; in comparison, ZCA preferred high salinity. The PIGMENTUM estimates were significantly positively correlated (p < 0.01) with CHEMTAX for all phytoplankton assemblages. This study hypothesizes that advanced machine learning (ML) models can more accurately predict certain critical water quality parameters in marine environments compared to conventional regression techniques. We specifically evaluated the spatio-temporal distribution of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Secchi Disk Depth (SDD) in the Gulf of Izmit using in-situ measurements and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from October 2021 and 2022. Among the models tested, the Support Vector Regression (SVR) model showed better predictive performance, achieving the lowest RMSE for SDD (1.11-1.70 m) and Chl-a (1.16-4.97 mg/m 3 ) and the lowest MAE for SDD (0.86-1.43 m) and Chl-a (1.03-3.17 mg/m 3 ). Additionally, the study observed a shift from hypertrophic to eutrophic Chl-a conditions and from mesotrophic-eutrophic to oligotrophic SDD conditions between 2021 and 2022, aligning with SVR model predictions and in-situ observations. Subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM) significantly contributes to oceanic primary productivity, emphasizing the need to study its dynamics and governing mechanisms. We used datasets from various platforms to investigate relationships between the SCM characteristics (SCM depth (Z SCM ), SCM magnitude (Chl max ), SCM thickness (T SCM )) and environmental variables modulated by various physical processes in the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO). In the Arabian Sea (western NIO), seasonal processes like convective mixing and upwelling, primarily regulated the SCM characteristics. In the Bay of Bengal (eastern NIO), SCM characteristics were jointly influenced by fresh water influx, barrier layer formation, presence of eddies, and the propagation of Kelvin and Rossby waves. Any changes in these oceanic processes, potentially driven by climate change, could therefore impact oceanic primary production. Estuaries are among the most sensitive systems to climate change. Previous studies have suggested that the Sado Estuary (Portugal) has decreasing trends for water temperature, which is uncommon in a global warming scenario. However, no long-term analysis regarding water column conditions has been conducted on this estuary to date. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to understand if and how the properties of this estuary have changed, considering a 34-year trend analysis and an assessment of their main drivers. Water temperature significantly decreased (up to 0.04 °C/year) along with chlorophyll a. Salinity increased and nutrients displayed an overall decrease. These trends were potentially driven by higher influence of upwelled water combined with a reduction of the river flow. Coastal pollutants, from harmful algal blooms, sewage and industrial discharges, pose severe risks to marine ecosystems and public health. Recently, Promenade Beach in Puducherry, Southeast-India, experienced reddish-brown water discoloration, suspected to result from either algal blooms or suspended matter. This study monitored the spatial extent and characteristics of the discoloration using Sentinel-2 satellite images from September to November 2023, with field observations and laboratory analyses. Analyses included measurements of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Total Suspended Matter (TSM), and the Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) to differentiate between algal blooms and other pollutants. The satellite data indicated extents of discoloration, with high TSM concentrations (>45 g/m 3 ) and negative NDCI values suggesting absence of algal blooms. No mortality of aquatic organisms was observed during this discoloration, indicating no deleterious impact on aquatic life. Satellite retrieval of total suspended solids (TSS) and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) was performed for the Gold Coast Broadwater, a micro-tidal estuarine lagoon draining a highly developed urban catchment area with complex and competing land uses. Due to the different water quality properties of the rivers and creeks draining into the Broadwater, sampling sites were grouped in clusters, with cluster-specific empirical/semi-empirical prediction models developed and validated with a leave-one-out cross validation approach for robustness. For unsampled locations, a weighted-average approach, based on their proximity to sampled sites, was developed. Confidence intervals were also generated, with a bootstrapping approach and visualised through maps. Models yielded varying accuracies (R 2  = 0.40-0.75). Results show that, for the most significant poor water quality event in the dataset, caused by summer rainfall events, elevated TSS concentrations originated in the northern rivers, slowly spreading southward. The present study assessed the trophic status of a medium-sized microtidal estuary, Rushikulya, India using a combination of mutimetric trophic indices (TRIX, TRBIX) and a machine learning approach (Random Forest). A total of 108 samples were considered to build a predictive model for chlorophyll a (Chl a) and 17 response water variables by observing two annual periods (2021-2023) at six sampling sites. Mean values of TRIX (5.04 ± 0.72) and TRBIX (0.17 ± 0.08) reflected that the estuary has a moderate degree of eutrophication with 'good' water quality and 'biomass saturated'. However, the threshold of TRIX represents a transition state from 'moderate' to 'high' eutrophic. Random Forest model reflected that no apparent association between Chl a and water turbidity above 30 NTU and eutrophication in the estuary fluctuated mainly due to PO 4 3- -P along with electrical conductivity. An accurate prediction of the spatial distribution of phytoplankton biomass, as represented by Chlorophyll-a (CHL-a) concentrations, is important for assessing ecological conditions in the marine environment. This study developed a hyperparameter-optimized decision tree-based machine learning (ML) models to predict the geographical distribution of marine phytoplankton CHL-a in the Bay of Bengal. To predict CHL-a over a large spatial extent, satellite-derived remotely sensed data of ocean color features (CHL-a, colored dissolved organic matter, photosynthetically active radiation, particulate organic carbon) and climatic factors (nighttime sea surface temperature, surface absorbed longwave radiation, sea level pressure) from 2003 to 2022 are used to train and test the models. Results obtained from this study have shown the highest concentrations of CHL-a occurred near the Bay's coastal belts and river estuaries. Analysis revealed that aside from photosynthetically active radiation, organic components exhibited a stronger positive relationship with CHL-a than climatic features, which are correlated negatively. Results showed the chosen decision tree methods to all possess higher R 2 and lower root mean square error (RMSE) errors. Furthermore, XGBoost outperforms all other models in predicting the geographic distribution of CHL-a. To assess the model efficacy on seasonal basis, a best performing XGBoost model was validated in the Bay of Bengal region which has shown a good performance in predicting the spatial distribution of Chl-a as well as the pixel values during the summer, winter and monsoon seasons. This study provides the best ML model to researchers for predicting CHL-a in the Bay of Bengal. Further it helps to improve our knowledge of CHL-a spatial dynamics and assist in monitoring marine resources in the Bay of Bengal. It has been established from previous studies that chlorophyll-a surface concentration has been declining in the eastern English Channel. This decline has been attributed to a decrease in nutrient concentrations in the rivers. However, the decrease in river discharge could also be a cause. In our study, rivers outflows and in-situ data have been compared to time series of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentrations. Dynamic Linear Model has been used to extract the dynamic and seasonally adjusted trends of several environmental variables. The results showed that, for the 1998-2019 period, chlorophyll-a levels stayed significantly lower than average and satellite images revealed a coast to offshore gradient. Chlorophyll-a concentration of coastal stations appeared to be related to the declining fluxes of phosphate while offshore stations were more related to nitrate-nitrite. We examined long-term response (2008-2017) of the macrobenthos to the Hebei Spirit oil spill that occurred around the Taean coast, Korea, in December 2007. Oil concentrations were below the Korea/US environmental standards as of January 2008. Organic matter, chlorophyll-a, and zooplankton abundance dominated by Noctiluca scintillans were higher after the spill. Macrobenthic diversity recovered to pre-incident (2007) level in 2011. Biomass exceeded that level in 2011 and the increase prolonged for 5 years. Cross-correlation and regression analyses showed that chlorophyll-a at year t and zooplankton abundance at t-2 had a significant relationship with macrobenthic biomass at t (p < 0.05 for both), suggesting the transfer of increased organic matter (transformed from crude oil within the pelagic ecosystem) into the benthic ecosystem. The relationships between phytoplankton carbon (C) biomass and diversity (i.e., C-to-H' ratio) and chlorophyll a (i.e., C-to-Chl a ratio) are good indicators of marine ecosystem functioning and stability. Here we conducted four cruises spanning 2 years in Jiaozhou Bay to explore the dynamics of C-to-H' and C-to-Chl a ratios. The results showed that the phytoplankton C biomass and diversity were dominated by diatoms, followed by dinoflagellates. The average C-to-H' ratio ranged from 84.10 to 912.17, with high values occurring in the northern region of the bay. In contrast, the average C-to-Chl a ratio ranged between 15.55 and 89.47, and high values primarily appeared in the northern or northeastern part of the bay. The effects of increasing CO 2 concentrations and temperature on microalgal assemblages were examined in Taiwan using mesocosms that simulate coral reef ecosystem. We assessed changes in abundance and diversity of benthic algae grown at 25 °C and 28 °C, under ambient (~ 400 μatm) and at high CO 2 conditions (800–1000 μatm). Total alkalinity, pCO 2 , and the aragonite saturation state, were all significantly different between control and high CO 2 treatments in both temperature treatments. Chl a concentration increased significantly in CO 2 -treated groups at 25 °C, but benthic microalgal abundance was not significantly different. The number of microalgal species and the microalgal community structure did not differ between control and CO 2 -treated groups at both temperatures. Our results suggest that increasing CO 2 may boost benthic microalgal primary productivity if sufficient nutrients are available, although site-specific responses are difficult to predict. The Yellow Sea is a shallow marginal sea with a large tidal range. In this study, ten areas located along the western coast of the Korean Peninsula are investigated with respect to remotely sensed water quality indicators derived from NASA MODIS aboard of the satellite Aqua. We found that there was a strong seasonal trend with spatial heterogeneity. In specific, a strong six-month phase-lag was found between chlorophyll-a and total suspended solid owing to their inversed seasonality, which could be explained by different dynamics and environmental settings. Chlorophyll-a concentration seemed to be dominantly influenced by temperature, while total suspended solid was largely governed by local tidal forcing and bottom topography. This study demonstrated the potential and applicability of satellite products in coastal management, and highlighted find that remote-sensing would be a promising tool in resolving orthogonality of large spatio-temporal scale variabilities when combining with proper time series analyses. Phytoplankton biomass is an intuitive indicator to evaluate the stability of marine ecosystems. How to obtain phytoplankton biomass quickly and accurately is the focus of marine research. In this work, we selected 12 phytoplankton species to explore the relationship between cell volume and cellular compounds. Results indicated that the volume of 12 species spanned 6 orders of magnitude from 0.11 μm 3 (Synechococcus sp. XM-5) to 1.26 × 10 5  μm 3 (Ditulum brightwellii). Besides, a strong negative linear correlation between cell abundance and volume was observed. For per-cell of phytoplankton, the log-log relationship between cell volume and particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), chlorophyll a (Chl-a) results reflected a positive correlation. On the contrary, the density of cellular compounds (POC, PON and Chl-a) presented a negative correlation in cell volume. In addition, for ratio of particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen (C/N), the average value was 5.46, diatoms had the lowest values, 4.72. Moreover, the ratio of carbon and chlorophyll a (C/Chl-a) varied from 15.09 to 79.75, indicating that the C/Chl-a values affected by the different categories. Meanwhile, diatoms usually have a lower C/Chl-a value for their special structure. Finally, we excluded the Synechococcus group of small individuals and found that the slope of their corresponding carbon-volume relationship was not very different, indicating that the smaller individuals had no effect on the assessment of carbon-volume relationship. Recent studies have demonstrated that plankton can be a key pathway for the uptake and transfer of contaminants entering the marine environment up to top predators. The plankton-contaminant MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise was devoted to quantifying contaminants in water and the whole plankton size range (10 size fractions) at 10 stations along a north-south transect in the western Mediterranean Sea from the French to the Tunisian coasts through the Provençal and Algerian basins. Pumping and filtering devices and net sampling have been used for collecting very high amounts of small particles and planktonic organisms in the chlorophyll maximum layer (CML). The present paper characterizes the zooplankton components for which the contaminant measurements were carried out. At each station, a horizontal towed Hydro-Bios net with a 60 μm mesh-size net was used to discriminate 5 size-fractions from 60 μm to a few mm. For each size-fraction, one part of the sample was used for dry weight measurements and the other one for estimating the contribution to biomass of detritus, phytoplankton, and among zooplankton of the major taxonomic groups based on the imagery tools ZOOSCAN and FLOWCAM. In each zooplankton size fraction, metabolic rates were calculated from the size spectrum to estimate trophic and excretion fluxes flowing through this fraction. These observations were compared to a similar analysis of tows in the upper layer (vertical) and the surface layer (horizontal). The total sampled biomass concentration at the CML was higher than in the water column (COL) and much higher than at the surface (SURF) in most of the stations, but in the CML and COL a substantial contribution was due to detritus mostly concentrated in the smallest size-fractions (60-200 μm and 200-500 μm). Absolute values of zooplankton biomass show neither a clear spatial pattern nor a significant difference between strata. The CML layer was dominated by copepods similarly to COL and SURF, but presented a higher contribution of nauplii and a near absence of appendicularians. At some stations, crustaceans and gelatinous plankton could be important contributors to CML. The zooplankton biomass composition of the two smallest fractions (<500 μm) was dominated by nauplii, small copepods and, occasionally, by small miscellaneous organisms (mostly pteropodes). In contrast, clear differences between stations appeared for the largest fractions (>500 μm) due to large crustaceans, gelatinous organisms, and chaetognaths. These changes in biomass composition according to size fractions suggest a progressive trophic shift from dominant herbivory in the smallest fractions to more contrasted trophic structure (including carnivory) in the largest fractions. The daily carbon demand and the N and P excretion of zooplankton were on average higher at the CML but with no significant difference with COL. The zooplankton grazing represented 2.7 to 22.7 % of the phytoplankton stock per day, whereas its excretion represented a daily N and P recycling compared to dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus stocks ranging respectively from 0.2 to 19 % and from 0 to 21 %. Dynamic of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is essential information to understand the status and trends of marine ecosystems. In this study, a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was applied to delineate space-in-time patterns of Chl-a from satellite dataset during 2002-2022 over the Bohai and Yellow Seas of China (BYS). Six typical Chl-a spatial patterns were discerned through a 2 × 3 nodes SOM, while temporal evolutions of dominant spatial patterns were analyzed. The Chl-a spatial patterns were characterized by different concentrations and gradients, and obviously changed over time. The Chl-a spatial patterns and their temporal evolutions were mainly shaped by joint effects of nutrient level, light availability, water column stability, and other factors. Our findings provide first glimpse of space-in-time Chl-a dynamics in the BYS, and complement to the traditional time-in-space Chl-a pattern studies. Accurate predictions of coastal ocean chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations are necessary for dynamic water quality monitoring, with eutrophication as a critical factor. Prior studies that used the driven-data method have typically overlooked the relationship between Chl-a and marine particulate carbon. To address this gap, marine particulate carbon was incorporated into machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to estimate Chl-a concentrations in the Yang Jiang coastal ocean of China. Incorporating particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) as predictors can lead to successful Chl-a estimation. The Gaussian process regression (GPR) model significantly outperforming the DL model in terms of stability and robustness. A lower POC/Chl-a ratio was observed in coastal areas, in contrast to the higher ratios detected in the southern regions of the study area. Estuaries in rainfall poor regions are highly susceptible to climatic and hydrological changes. The Coorong, a Ramsar-listed estuarine-coastal lagoon at the end of the Murray-Darling Basin (Australia), has experienced declining ecological health over recent decades. Twenty years of environmental data were analysed to assess patterns and drivers of water quality changes. Large areas of the Coorong are now persistently hyper-saline (salinity >80 psu) and hypereutrophic (total nitrogen, TN > 4 mg L -1 , total phosphorus, TP > 0.2 mg L -1 , chlorophyll a > 50 μg L -1 ) which coincided with reduced flushing due to diminished freshwater inflows and increasing evapo-concentration. Sediment quality also was related to flushing, with higher concentrations of organic carbon, TN, TP and sulfides as salinity increased. While total nutrient levels are very high, dissolved inorganic nutrients are generally low. The Secchi disk depth (SD) is an important parameter in aquatic ecosystem monitoring. As algal growth depends on solar irradiation, the SD - a measure of light extinction - gives an indirect indication of the chlorophyll concentration. However, most SD measurements are manually based and too sparse to resolve water quality variations during algal blooms. A remotely controlled automatic system for field measurement of light extinction has been developed and installed in three marine fish culture zones in Hong Kong. The visual images of the disk at different prescribed depths and the surrounding water are taken. Based on the contrast theory and image analysis, the recorded light intensity distributions can be analyzed to give the SD and the light extinction coefficient. The method has been extensively verified by field data over a wide range of water quality and hydro-meteorological conditions. Phytoplankton assemblage and chlorophyll a along the salinity gradient and oxygen zonation were studied in Ulhas Estuary. Oxic condition exist in euhaline region of the estuary that receives oxygenated coastal waters, while, poly-meso-oligohaline region is hypoxic due to the accumulation of voluminous amount of pollutants from industrial effluents, domestic/sewage and agricultural discharges. Additionally, anthropogenically generated nutrients enhanced phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and their senescence also led to hypoxia. The dominance of diatoms (>70%) was observed in the euhaline-oxic region, while a tremendous decrease in their contribution (18%) was observed in the oligohaline region. Meso to oligohaline region of the estuary is governed by cyanophytes and chlorophytes due to their affinity towards low salinity and high dissolved inorganic nutrients. Carlson's Trophic State Index (TSI) further substantiated the estuary as eutrophic. A moored optical buoy was deployed in the Pearl River estuarine waters for a 15-day period. A four-day algal bloom event occurred during this study period. Both chlorophyll a concentration and algal cell density (a proxy for biomass) changed dramatically before and after the event. The chlorophyll concentration at a 2.3m depth rose from 5.15mg/m−3 at 15:00h on August 19 to 23.62mg/m−3 at 9:00h on August 21, and then decreased to 3.24mg/m−3 at 15:00h on August 24. The corresponding cell density ranged from 1.57×105 to 1.76×106 cells/L. We used normalized fluorescence line height (NFLH) and normalized fluorescence intensity (NFI) in order to determine fluorescence activity. Combined with the in situ sampling dataset, we were able to correlate natural fluorescence (NFLH and NFI) with chlorophyll a concentrations, and found correlation coefficients of 0.72 and 0.75, respectively. We also found correlations between natural fluorescence and cell density, with correlation coefficients of 0.71 and 0.65, respectively. These results indicate that applying continuous time series of natural fluorescence can reflect changes in biomass. This technique will prove extremely useful for in situ and real-time observations using an optical buoy. Although there are still problems to solve in the real-time observation of natural fluorescence in algal bloom events, we discuss the primary factors affecting fluorescence signals and suggest possible methods for mitigating these issues. To examine whether a country-wide COVID-19 lockdown affected phytoplankton development, variability of chlorophyll-a concentrations in the north-western Arabian/Persian Gulf (Kuwait Bay) was investigated using remote sensing instruments Sentinel OLCI between 2018 and 2020 and compared to available in situ collected data. Satellite-retrieved chlorophyll concentrations considerably increased in inshore waters of Kuwait Bay, 1-2 months following the initiation of the 24/7 curfew. The extremely high concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients, especially ammonia, and coincided phytoplankton bloom were revealed in June-July 2020 by opportunity field sampling, supporting the satellite-derived bloom detection. Remote sensing operational monitoring with high spatial resolution sensors provides an exceptional opportunity for emergency analysis and decision making in conditions of natural or anthropogenic crises, which forces the development of regional remote sensing algorithms for the shallow marine environment of the Gulf., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Monthly mean satellite derived Chl-a, aerosols, wind, SST, PAR, and turbidity datasets were used to investigate the possible factors regulating phytoplankton variability in the Persian Gulf. The spatial correlation analysis revealed two distinct regions of SST and PAR, and a relatively uniform spatial correlation pattern of the other parameters. The cross correlation between aeolian dusts and Chl-a was significantly positive with 1-3 months offset. The pattern of spatial correlation between Chl-a and SST was positive in the shallow regions without time lag, and was negative with time offset of 3-5 months in deeper regions. The cross correlation between Chl-a and north-ward winds were positive with time lags of 1-3 months. Vertical mixing under the influence of north-ward winds in the deeper region, availability of light and nutrients in the shallow regions, and dust fertilizations over the whole area were suggested to be the major controlling factors regulating phytoplankton growth., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. We examined the effects of nutrient availability and turbidity on phytoplankton biomass over 9 years in Gwanyang Bay, Korea, which is an anthropogenically polluted and complex estuary. While dredging and reclamation shaped geochemical features, river discharge with low-turbidity water and sewage treatment plants contributed to nutrient loading. The replete levels of nutrients and short water-residence time suggest the inapplicability of the washout theory, whereas the presence of NH 4 + suppressed the growth of phytoplankton. A reduction in the river discharge caused a concomitant decline in the loading and dilution of suspended particles. All these features led to an increase in SPM, light limitation, and NH 4 + concentration. GLM estimates revealed negative effects of NH 4 + and SPM on chlorophyll a over 9 years while SEM verified synergistic effects of NH 4 + and SPM compared with positive effects of NO 2  + NO 3 - . A combined approach merging stable isotopes and fatty acids was applied to study anthropogenic pollution in the Río Negro estuary. Fatty acid markers of vegetal detritus indicated considerable allochthonous inputs at freshwater sites. Correlative evidence of diatom fatty acids, δ 13 C, chlorophyll and particulate organic matter suggested the importance of diatoms for the autochthonous organic matter production at the river mouth. Low δ 15 N values (~0‰) and high fatty acid 18:1(n-7) concentrations in the suspended particulate matter, in combination with the peaks of coliforms and ammonium, indicated a strong impact of untreated sewage discharge. The 15 N depletion was related to oxygen-limited ammonification processes and incorporation of 15 N depleted ammonium to microorganisms. This work demonstrates that the combined use of lipid and isotopic markers can greatly increase our understanding of biogeochemical factors and pollutants influencing estuaries, and our findings highlight the urgent need for water management actions to reduce eutrophication., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. The variation of eleven Cymodocea nodosa metrics was studied along two anthropogenic gradients in the North Aegean Sea, in two separate periods (July 2004 and July 2013). The aim was to specify existing monitoring programs on different kind of human-induced or natural stress for a better decision-making support. Key water variables (N-NO 2 , N-NO 3 , N-NH 4 , P-PO 4 , Chl-a, attenuation coefficient-K, and suspended solids) along with the stress index MALUSI were also estimated in each sampling effort. All metrics (except one) showed significant differences (p<0.05) and highest variation at the meadows scale in both sampling periods. The body size, e.g., CymoSkew, total and maximum leaf length, and leaf area (cm 2 /shoot), rather than the abundance, e.g., shoot density (shoots/m 2 ), leaf area index (m 2 /m 2 ), metrics were related to anthropogenic eutrophication variables represented by N-NH 4 , N-NO 3, N/P and MALUSI. The temporal analysis was restricted to two (2) meadows and water variables that were common between the two periods. PERMANOVA and PCA of common meadows and metrics within nine years showed significant but not consistent differences. While the most impacted studied site of Viamyl remained unchanged, a significant improvement of water quality was observed in the second most impacted meadow of Nea Karvali, which however was reduced to half of its previous area. On the one hand that was the result of combined management practices in nearby aquacultures and lower industrial activities due to the economic crisis. The vertical pattern of pelagic ciliate communities was observed at eight layers in the Chukchi Sea and the northern Bering Sea of the western Arctic Ocean during the summer sea-ice reduction period (August 5 to August 24, 2016). A total of 44 ciliate species were identified, with seven species dominated the communities in the water column. Multivariate and univariate analyses demonstrated that: (1) community structures of ciliates vary significantly among eight water depths; (2) variations in the vertical distribution of ciliates were significantly correlated with changes in physicochemical variables, especially the ammonia; (3) the distributions of the three dominant species were significantly and positively related to the chlorophyll a and ammonia concentrations; and (4) species richness and abundance were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of ammonia and chlorophyll a. Simple empirical models can sometimes capture salient patterns without sacrificing predictive capacity when compared to more complex models. Herein we examine dissolved oxygen as an indicator of eutrophication status for shallow estuaries. Dissolved oxygen was measured hourly in the upper estuary of 15 watersheds along a nutrient-loading and geographic gradient. Metrics describing hypoxia and supersaturation were devised and then analyzed using multivariate statistics. Results revealed independent responses for hypoxia and supersaturation with hypoxia-related metrics correlating strongly with water residence. A metric integrating hypoxia and supersaturation effectively discriminated between seagrass and algae-dominated habitats and was significantly correlated with both water residence and nitrate-N loading. Chlorophyll, measured bi-weekly, was not correlated with our predictor variables likely because it does not account for benthic production. Spatial distribution of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) and their accumulation in mangrove Avicennia officinalis L. were studied along 8 locations in and around Sundarban mangrove wetland, India. Among 8 locations, S3 (Chemaguri) and S5 (Ghushighata) showed higher concentration of PTMs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) characterized by higher enrichment factors (3.45-10.03), geo-accumulation indices (0.04-1.22), contamination factors (1.14-3.51) and pollution load indices (1.3-1.45) indicating progressive deterioration of estuarine quality and considerable ecotoxicological risk. Metal concentration in A. officinalis leaves showed significant correlation with sediment metals implying elevated level of bioaccumulation. Significant statistical correlation between photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b), antioxidant response (free radical scavenging and reducing ability) and stress enzymatic activity (Peroxidase, Catalase, Super-oxide dismutase) of A. officinalis with increasing metal concentration in the contaminated locations reflects active detoxification mechanism of the plant. Little is known about the dynamics of particulate inorganic and organic matter in brackish water controlled by tidal prism and seasonal river discharges in Macuse estuary, on central Mozambique coast, southern Africa. This manuscript illustrates seasonal variation of biogeochemical flow dynamics in a tropical estuarine system in Zambézia province. The data were collected at 42 stations, including tidal current measurements with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, tidal elevation with a tidal-gauge and nitrate, silicate (SiO 2 ), dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll-a with a photometer device system and tidal currents with multisensory instrument device (Current, Temperature and Depth device). These field data helped to calibrate a twelve months simulation of a 3D Computational Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics Model (3D CAEDM) in 2014. The results emphasize a tidal elevation of 4-m height that generated tidal currents of 120 cm/s. They combination with seasonal runoff of ~500 m 3 /s from Namacurra River and averaged bathymetry morphology of 10-m depth, led on to the seasonal concentration flux of dissolved oxygen, nitrate, SiO 2 and chlorophyll-a during the ebbing and flooding. In addition, the river discharges were found to be the main source of nitrate and SiO 2 , while the tidal prism led on the hydrological flow of the brackish-waters during the rainy season with maximum salinity anomaly of 16%. Besides the data obtained, the 3D model matches in reproducing the biogeochemical data flow have considerable potential possess of a valuable information in long- and short-term and large- and small-scale that may allow policy-makers to determine political decisions for bio-conservation, sustainability and coastal management., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The ecological impact of thermal discharge has become an important issue in the field of marine and environmental protection. We focused on the effects of thermal discharge on seawater temperature and biological communities based on data from before (2006) and after (2013-2014) the construction of a power plant. The thermal discharge induced stratification, which resulted in changes in the vertical hydrodynamic conditions. Stratification combined with elevated temperatures significantly affected the phytoplankton abundance and community structure. Elevated seawater temperatures decreased the chlorophyll-a concentrations by 34% and 63%, at the surface and bottom, respectively. The elevated seawater temperature at the bottom might not be high enough to significantly affect the macrobenthos, but significantly affected the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. Because these communities serve as food for the macrobenthic community, their changes resulted in growth of the macrobenthos. Physiological responses of jellyfish to pollution are virtually overlooked. We measured the activity of two glycolytic enzymes (pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)), lipid peroxidation (LPO), protein and chlorophyll a content in the jellyfish Cassiopea sp. from polluted and reference sites along the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan. In jellyfish from polluted sites, low PK/LDH ratios and high LDH activity clarify their reliance on anaerobic metabolism. PK and LDH were positively correlated in the jellyfish. While medusae from polluted sites showed no signs of oxidative stress damage, protein content was significantly lower. This might suggest protein utilization for energy production needed for maintenance. Unchanged LPO in polluted sites indicates the ability of jellyfish to keep reactive oxygen species under control. Overall these results suggest that the jellyfish seems to tolerate the current levels of pollution at the studied sites and they might be anaerobically poised to live at such habitats., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. We analyzed the occurrence and status of infralittoral fringe populations of Cystoseira spp. (Fucales) at thirteen rocky sites around the Italian coastline, and explored the relationships with relevant environmental and anthropogenic variables. We found Cystoseira populations at 11 sites: most were scattered and comprised monospecific stands of C. compressa, and only 6 sites also supported sparse specimens of either C. amentacea var. stricta or C. brachycarpa. Coastal human population density, Chlorophyll a seawater concentrations, sea surface temperature, annual range of sea surface temperature and wave fetch explained most of the variation of the status of C. compressa. We hypothesize a generally unhealthy state of the Italian Cystoseira infralittoral fringe populations and identify multiple co-occurring anthropogenic stressors as the likely drivers of these poor conditions. Extensive baseline monitoring is needed to describe how Cystoseira populations are changing, and implement a management framework for the conservation of these valuable but vulnerable habitats., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Estuarine oxygen depletion is one of the worldwide problems, which is caused by the freshwater-input-derived severe stratification and high nutrients loading. In this study we presented the horizontal and vertical distributions of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the Pearl River estuary, together with temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a concentration and heterotrophic bacteria abundance obtained from two cruises during the summer (wet) and winter (dry) periods of 2015. In surface water, the DO level in the summer period was lower and varied greater, as compared to the winter period. The DO remained unsaturated in the summer period if salinity is <12 and saturated if salinity is >12; while in the winter period it remained saturated throughout the estuary. In subsurface (>5m) water, the DO level varied from 0.71 to 6.65mgL -1 and from 6.58 to 8.20mgL -1 in the summer and winter periods, respectively. Particularly, we observed an area of ~1500km 2 low DO zone in the subsurface water with a threshold of 4mgDOL -1 during this summer period, that located at the fresh- and saline-water intersection where is characterized with severe stratification and high heterotrophic bacteria abundance. The effect of multiple stressors on marine ecosystems is poorly understood. To partially bridge this knowledge gap we investigated the relative contribution of environmental variables to density and diversity dynamics of the zooplankton community in the Belgian part of the North Sea. We applied multimodel inference on generalized additive models to quantify the relative contribution of chlorophyll a, temperature, nutrients, salinity and anthropogenic chemicals (i.e. polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) to the dynamics of calanoid copepod species in the Belgian part of the North Sea. Temperature was the only predictor consistently showing a high importance in all models predicting the abundances of the selected copepod species. The relative contribution of other predictors was species-dependent. Anthropogenic chemicals were important predictors for three out of six species indicating that chemical mixtures at low concentrations should not be left unattended when performing risk assessments in a natural environment., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. In this study, we used flow cytometry and 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing to investigate bacterioplankton (heterotrophic bacteria and picocyanobacteria) abundance and community structure in surface waters along the Pearl River Estuary. The results showed significant differences in bacterioplankton dynamics between fresh- and saltwater sites and between wet and dry season. Synechococcus constituted the majority of picocyanobacteria in both seasons. During the wet season, Synechococcus reached extremely high abundance at the mouth of the estuary, and heterotrophic bacteria were highly abundant (>10 6 cellsml -1 ) throughout the studied region. At the same time, bacterioplankton decreased dramatically during the dry season. Pyrosequencing data indicated that salinity was a key parameter in shaping microbial community structure during both seasons. Phytoplankton was also an important factor; the proportion of Synechococcus and Rhodobacteriales was elevated at the frontal zone with higher chlorophyll a during the wet season, whereas Synechococcus were markedly reduced during the dry season., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. To evaluate the effect of rainfall intensity on phytoplankton blooms, a continuous monitoring system was deployed during 2015 in a hyper-eutrophic lagoon in Taiwan. Intensive rainfall occurs during the wet summer months, from May to September. Salinity in the lagoon was found to decrease with increasing intensity of rainfall. The magnitude of phytoplankton blooms also increased linearly with increasing rainfall intensity. The chlorophyll a concentration rose by an order of magnitude during the heaviest rainfall. Blooms may be fueled by nutrient enrichment caused by drainage or run-off water from surrounding areas that is channeled into the lagoon during rainfall events. During bloom periods, the rates of net primary production and ecosystem respiration were high. However, this ecosystem was autotrophic for most of the year. As extreme rainfall is predicted to increase, the results of this study imply that the frequency and magnitude of phytoplankton blooms may increase in the future., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Fish larvae of four SE Brazilian estuaries were investigated to assess if the larval fish assemblages reflect the ecological status of estuaries. All samples were collected in the same water mass to guarantee similar natural water parameters, assuring that major differences among estuaries were related to anthropogenic pressures. Water temperature, oxygen, pH, chlorophyll a, faecal coliforms, nutrient load and total particulate matter were obtained at each sampling area. A pressure index was used to assess the overall anthropogenic pressures acting in each estuary. Results showed that fish larvae were sensitive to water contamination, reducing the diversity and especially exhibiting a high dominance of few species. Furthermore, this study reinforced the idea that the high sensitivity of fish larvae can increase the accuracy of the environmental assessments when tackling short-time events of hydrological controls (physical barriers and control of the freshwater input), representing an advance in the water ecological quality assessments., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, we investigated the environmental impacts of scallop culture on two coastal estuaries adjacent the Bohai Sea including developing a quantitative PCR assay to assess the abundance of the bacterial pathogens Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Scallop culture resulted in a significant reduction of nitrogen, Chlorophyll a, and phosphorous levels in seawater during summer. The abundance of bacteria including V. parahaemolyticus varied significantly across estuaries and breeding seasons and was influenced by nitrate as well as nutrient ratios (Si/DIN, N/P). Bacterioplankton diversity varied across the two estuaries and seasons, and was dominated by Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes. Overall, this study suggests a significant influence of scallop culture on the ecology of adjacent estuaries and offers a sensitive tool for monitoring scallop contamination., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Vertical profiles of deep-water fluorescence determined by the chlorophyll sensor, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, biomarkers, and other miscellaneous parameters measured in the southern Gulf of Mexico are reported. In the course of the survey, unexpected deep fluorescences were recorded (>1100m depth) in half of the 40 stations studied, a novel finding in this area of the Gulf. Currently, the deep-water fluorescence phenomenon is not completely understood, however we observe linear correlation between the fluorescence intensity and chlorophyll-α concentrations and coincidence of higher number of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria in samples collected precisely in the deep-water fluorescence. This information is particularly interesting in relation to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, in view that the aftermaths of the spill can be observed till today as oil plumes trapped in deep water layers that may disturb the natural water ecosystem., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Ocean acidification (OA) resulting from increasing atmospheric CO 2 strongly influences marine ecosystems, particularly in the polar ocean due to greater CO 2 solubility. Here, we grew the Antarctic sea ice diatom Nitzschia sp. ICE-H in a semicontinuous culture under low (~400ppm) and high (1000ppm) CO 2 levels. Elevated CO 2 resulted in a stimulated physiological response including increased growth rates, chlorophyll a contents, and nitrogen and phosphorus uptake rates. Furthermore, high CO 2 enhanced cellular particulate organic carbon production rates, indicating a greater shift from inorganic to organic carbon. However, the cultures grown in high CO 2 conditions exhibited a decrease in both extracellular and intracellular carbonic anhydrase activity, suggesting that the carbon concentrating mechanisms of Nitzschia sp. ICE-H may be suppressed by elevated CO 2 . Our results revealed that OA would be beneficial to the survival of this sea ice diatom strain, with broad implications for global carbon cycles in the future ocean., (Copyright © 2017. The potential for a ship-mounted laser fluorometer to provide rapid, non-intrusively measurements in both coastal and lake conditions are investigated. The instrument consists of a high pulse repetition frequency (10-kHz) microchip laser for fluorescence excitation, a broadband hyperspectral micro spectrometer for spectral detection, and a confocal reflective fluorescent probe for signal collection; it weighs only about 1.7kg. Chlorophyll a (chl-a) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) measured by the new instrument were observed to agree well with those measured by traditional time-consuming laboratory methods in Hangzhou Bay seawater and Qiandao Lake inland water. Subsequently, laser fluorescence distribution and characteristics of chl-a and CDOM in these regions were analyzed, which will improve our understanding of biogeochemical processes in these optically complex aquatic systems. Contamination by microplastic particles and fibres has been observed in sediment and animals sampled from the Firth of Clyde, West Scotland. In addition to microplastics released during clothes washing, a probable source is polymer ropes in abandoned, lost and discarded fishing and recreational sailing gear. The fragmentation of polypropylene, polyethylene, and nylon exposed to benthic conditions at 10m depth over 12months was monitored using changes in weight and tensile properties. Water temperature and light levels were continuously monitored. The degree of biofouling was measured using chlorophyll a, the weight of attached macroalgae, and colonising fauna. Results indicate microplastic fibres and particles may be formed in benthic environments despite reduced photodegradation. Polypropylene, Nylon, and polyethylene lost an average of 0.39%, 1.02%, and 0.45% of their mass per month respectively. We developed an inexpensive bottom water sampler that can be operated from a small boat in order to obtain high resolution vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorophyll, suspended particulate matter (SPM). These vertical profiles allow us to examine bottom resuspension processes and to estimate their benthic fluxes of nutrients across the sediment-water interface in shallow coastal waters. The sampler consists of a 2m long thick-walled transparent tube with 26 sampling ports at 8-10cm intervals. Each sampling interval contains a minimum of 300-370ml water samples. Test sampling was conducted twice during different tidal phases, and differences in bottom DO, ammonium and SPM were found to be significant between the two tests. Our results suggest that this bottom sampler is essential in order to study sediment-pelagic coupling processes by obtaining high resolution of various parameters in the 2m water column above the sediment., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. As the representative semi-enclosed bay of China, Bohai Bay has experienced severe eutrophication in recent decades. Monitoring data from 1995 to 2013 were analysed by generalized additive models (GAMs) to explore the temporal variations in nutrients concentrations, nutrient ratios, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations and the responses of Chl a to the changes in nutrients in the spring and summer. The results showed that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) decreased from 1995 to 2000 but increased after 2000 in both the spring and summer, and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) decreased while the molar nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) ratios (DIN to SRP) increased over the last two decades. Generally, P-limited phytoplankton growth was observed in the spring and summer and DIN was identified as the main pollutant constituent in Bohai Bay.
