Abstract Over the last four decades the Mexican Caribbean has experienced intensive coastal development, and change on the reef system condition has already been observed. This paper describes the reef system characteristics, at local and seascape scales, and discusses the current status and trends, considering the main research efforts from academia and Non-Governmental Organizations. To date, the coral cover of most reefs in the region is between 15 and 20%, following a slight recovery on mean coral cover over the last decade. During this same period, fleshy macroalgae and herbivorous fish biomass appear to have increased. At seascape scales, an increase of macroalgae and the loss of seagrass habitat have been observed. Considering that anthropogenic and environmental disturbances will most likely increase, the establishment of newly protected areas in the Mexican Caribbean is appropriate, but sufficient accompanying funding is required. Petroleum industry in the southern Gulf of Mexico possesses relevant importance for the Mexican economy but it has also impacted the marine and coastal environments of this region. The objective of the current review is to provide a substantial panorama of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the XXI century. The highest PAHs concentration in water was found in the Dos Bocas Maritime Terminal and the Mecoacán Lagoon; sediments and cores were found in Sontecomapan, Mandinga, and La Mancha Lagoons; maximum PAHs levels in biota were found in fish in Términos Lagoon. PAHs in water and oysters were comparable to others around the world; sediments concentrations were higher than in other regions. Mecoacán Lagoon, coastal shelf Tamaulipas, and Cayo Arcas Reef Complex showed a higher risk estimation based on sediment concentrations. Mercury, cadmium, and selenium contents were quantified in sharks Mustelus henlei, M. californicus, Sphyna zygaena, and Isurus oxyrinchus, which represent important fishery resources in the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Sample compliance estimations with Mexican dietary standards and human health risks, according to provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI), were provided for critical population sectors, including young children, pregnant/nursing women, and adults. The estimated weekly intake was limited to 1.52 kg of M. californicus, 1.35 kg of S. zygaena, 0.5 kg of I. oxyrinchus, and 2.42 kg of M. henlei. Likewise, the Hazard Quotient (HQ) <1 and Hazard Index (THI) <1 were within safe limits; therefore, there will be no chronic noncarcinogenic health hazards in the short or long term. Coral reefs are maintained by a balance between formation (calcifiers) and destructive processes (dissolution and erosion). In eastern tropical Pacific reefs, Porites genus is the second-largest contributor to CaCO 3 production, but is affected by bioerosion. In this study, we evaluate the interaction between Lithophaga and Porites in an island reef in the Mexican Pacific by quantifying bioerosion rate, its impact on CaCO 3 production, and contrasting growth models. To achieve this, Porites lobata colonies were collected to evaluate calcification and CaCO 3 production. Shells of Lithophaga (Leiosolenus plumula) were extracted from corals, and age and length fed into a growth model. Our results indicate a high bioerosion rate (21.9 ± 4.1 %), representing 8.3 % of overall CaCO 3 production. Bivalves' age (8 y) was less than corals (12.6 y), and cohort analysis indicates an intense recruitment. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs), characterized by their high mobility and environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer. Considering the highly migratory nature and longevity of the whale shark, this species can be considered as an early warning bioindicator of regional contamination from the marine environment. This work investigated the concentration of twenty OCPs in thirty whale shark skin biopsies, collected between 2014 and 2015 in Bahía La Paz (Gulf of California, Mexico). Mean detected OCP levels were 33.99 ± 105.23 ng/g dw (dry weight), and ΣChlordane, ΣDrin, and ΣHCH showed the highest concentrations. Statistically differences in mean OCP concentration were not found by sex and size. PC1 and PC2 accounted for 68.1 % and 16.1 % of the total variance, respectively. Over a reproductive cycle, the prevalence and intensity of degeneration of testicular follicles in Megapitaria squalida collected from the mining port of Santa Rosalia (a highly metal-polluted area), and San Lucas (a less polluted site), Gulf of California, Mexico, were evaluated. At San Lucas, most individuals had a typical testicular structure, and degeneration of testicular follicles was present in 9.5 % of spawning organisms. In contrast, at Santa Rosalia, 68 % of males, mainly in the ripe stage, had testicular degeneration (72 % severe intensity, mostly in medium and large-sized). Degeneration was characterized by intense hemocyte infiltration, identified as dense masses with numerous melanized cells in the follicle lumen. In both sites, males with testicular follicles degeneration had a lower condition index compared to males without degeneration. Ecotoxicological tools, namely biomarkers and bioassays, may provide insights on the ecological quality status of mangroves under restoration. We investigated how 1) physicochemical parameters and water bioassays using Artemia franciscana; and 2) quantification of sublethal (osmoregulatory capacity, biochemical, and oxidative stress) and individual biomarkers (density, length-weight relationship [LWR], parasitic prevalence) in the sentinel fiddler crab Minuca rapax, can improve restoration indicators in mangroves from the Yucatán Peninsula, Southern Gulf of Mexico. We showed that water quality was improved with restoration, but still presented toxicity. Regarding sublethal biomarkers, M rapax from restored areas lower osmotic regulatory capacity, higher oxidative stress, and showed lipid peroxidation. As to the individual biomarkers, the density, LWR, and the prevalence of parasites in M. rapax was higher in restored areas. The Mexican Caribbean contributes significantly to Mexico's gross national product. The number of tourists declined from 16.7 million in 2019 to 8.8 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a rapid recovery of 13.5 million in 2021. Wastewater discharge is the primary contamination source associated with the tourism sector's demand for goods and services. Water quality could improve due to fewer tourists arriving during the COVID-19 sanitary emergency. This study aimed to quantify ammonium concentrations at eleven locations to evaluate water quality during the sanitary restriction due to the pandemic in the Mexican Caribbean. The ammonium concentrations were 85 % (Nov-2019), 89 % (Feb-2020), and 86 % (Feb-2021) higher than in Nov-2020, where six of the eleven sampled stations were below the detection limit (0.15 μM). Sharks are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulation due to their life history characteristics and trophic position within marine ecosystems. Despite this, studies of bioaccumulation cover only a small proportion of extant species. In this study we report concentrations of trace elements and heavy metals in blood samples of Sphyrna lewini for the first time. We report high concentrations of several trace elements and heavy metals, with concentrations of some elements exceeding the limit determined safe for human consumption. High elemental concentrations may reflect biochemical differences between blood plasma and other tissues; however, they may also be symptomatic of high levels of exposure triggered by anthropogenic activities. We also provide evidence of elemental accumulation through ontogeny, the nature of which differs from that previously reported. Due to the amply exposure of marine turtles to marine plastic pollution, this is a reason that the green sea turtle Chelonia mydas makes a good candidate species as a bioindicator for plastic pollution. Turtle feces were collected at Isla Blanca on the northeast Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Microplastic extraction was done following Hidalgo-Ruz et al. (2012) and Masura et al. (2015) methods. After organic matter degradation of the feces samples, microplastics were identified and quantified by stereomicroscope. Their morphostructure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, while their composition was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Microplastics (MP) abundance ranged from 10 ± 2 MP·g -1 to 89 ± 3 MP·g -1 . Kruskal Wallis test (KW = 70.31, p < 0.001) showed a significant difference between 22 green turtles analyzed. Most of the microplastics were fiber type. Blue, purple, and transparent fibers were the most abundant. The identified microplastics were nylon (polyamide), PVC, polypropylene, polyester, and viscose (cellulose). We assessed the tolerance, safety margins, and behavioral responses to extreme conditions of the mangrove fiddler crab Leptuca speciosa during a heatwave event (May of 2022), in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. In the field, L. speciosa demonstrated aggregation behavior, congregating in areas that were above the water level to escape the extreme water conditions. In the laboratory, we determined that the upper critical thermal limits (UT 99 ) ranged from 40.2 °C and 42 °C. For salinity, the lethal concentration was LC 99  = 39 psu. Our study showed that L. speciosa, one of the most conspicuous and resilient inhabitants of mangroves, had no safety margin and low tolerance to the climatic conditions as measured in the heatwave, and displayed a protective behavior. The present study analyzed the content of total mercury (THg) and selenium (Se) in the muscle of shrimp collected from local markets in the 11 Pacific coastal states of Mexico. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentration, Se:Hg ratio, health benefits value from selenium consumption (HBV Se ) and the permissible weekly consumption were estimated to assess the health risk to consumers. All THg and Se concentrations were below the maximum permissible limits. All hazard quotient (HQ) values were <1, however in Hermosillo, Culiacán and Guadalajara, the Se:Hg ratio and HBV Se were <1 and negative, due to the low concentrations of Se. Alexandrium tamiyavanichii is a marine dinoflagellate known to produce Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxin. Thus, a strain was isolated from La Paz Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico and used to explore whether stress conditions, such as phosphorus limitation (PL) and nitrogen enrichment (NE) modulate population growth and PSP toxin production in the GSe medium. Growth kinetics showed that the PL treatment produced a 3.4-fold increase in cell density versus control at day 30 of the culture cycle. The highest PSP concentration was found in the control culture (309 fmol cell -1 ) on day 21. Saxitoxin (STX) was the main analog in all the treatments (> 40 % mol). In conclusion, PL and NE treatments promoted growth kinetics in the species studied but did not affect the PSP toxin production. Total mercury ([THg]) and selenium ([TSe]) concentrations were determined in California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) lanugo from the Gulf of California in 2021 and 2022. Relationships with sex, morphometrics, and year were evaluated. Following toxicological thresholds of concern for piscivorous mammals, most pups had a [THg] < 10 ppm, one pup (2021) had a [THg] > 20 ppm, no pups had a [THg] > 30 ppm. Females had significantly higher [TSe] than males; sex did not influence [THg]. [THg] and [TSe] in 2022 were significantly higher in the general population and male cohorts compared to 2021. Significant negative correlations were observed between [THg], [TSe], and morphometrics (2021). These results indicate that, compared to other pinniped species, regional California sea lions may have a decreased likelihood of experiencing Hg-related adverse health effects. Sea turtles can bioaccumulate high concentrations of potentially toxic contaminants. To better understand trace element effects on sea turtles' health, we established reference intervals for hematological and plasma biochemical analytes in 40 in-water, foraging immature and adult Eastern Pacific green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from two coastal lagoons in Baja California Sur, quantified whole blood concentrations of eight trace elements, and assessed their correlations. Rank-order trace element concentrations in both immature and adult turtles was zinc > selenium > nickel > arsenic > copper > cadmium > lead > manganese. Immature turtles had significantly higher copper and lower nickel and zinc concentrations. Additionally, a number of relationships between trace elements and blood analytes were identified. The impacts of microplastics on filter feeders megafauna have recently received increased attention. These organisms are potentially exposed to plastic ingestion and the release of added/sorbed contaminants during feeding activities. An assessment of microplastic abundance and the chemical impact of Phthalates esters (PAEs) were performed in neustonic samples and skin biopsies of Balaenoptera physalus and Rhincodon typus inhabiting the Gulf of California (Mexico). Sixty-eight percent of the net tows contained plastics with a maximum of 0.24 items/m 3 mainly composed of polyethylene fragments. PAE levels were detected both in environmental and skin biopsy samples, with the highest values in the fin whale specimens (5291 ng/g d.w). Plasticizer fingerprint showed a similar distribution pattern between neustonic samples and filter-feeding species, with DEHP and MBP having the highest concentrations. The presence of Emerging Pollutants (EPs) on the beaches of Acapulco, Mexico, is evaluated for the first time. Samples were taken from the discharge of the wastewater treatment plant at Olvidada beach, and at three beaches that receive contributions from different streams that cross through the city in Santa Lucia Bay (SLB). Using solid phase extraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, 77 EPs were identified. A semiquantitative evaluation of their concentrations were made using the relative areas of the chromatographic peaks, showing that the contamination of the beaches of SLB is mainly due to the pollutants going into the streams of the micro-basins. A statistical factor analysis of all the EPs allowed differentiation of the sampling points, reducing the number of variables, which benefits future analytical determinations in the study area. Microplastics (MPs, < 5 mm in size) are highly bioavailable to many taxa within the marine ecosystem, either ingested directly or indirectly through trophic transfer from polluted prey. The ingestion analysis of these MPs from top predators, such as pinnipeds in Mexico, is relatively unexplored. Forty-eight scats from California sea lions were collected on six rookeries along the Gulf of California. From these scat samples, 294 suspected MPs particles were classified and chemically analyzed; 34% were synthetic and semi-synthetic, and 66% were non-synthetic. Blue-colored polyethylene terephthalate fibers were the most common type of MP registered. During laboratory work, multiple contamination control measures were implemented. Although the ingestion pathway is still unknown, our results support the other authors that suggest the potential trophic transfer of MPs to top predators and incidental ingestion while foraging. Concentrations of total mercury, total selenium, and cadmium ([THg], [TSe], [Cd]) were determined in hair of California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups from four islands of the Gulf of California and the Baja California Pacific coast (NG, CG, NP, and CP) to identify geographical differences and the effect of Se against Hg toxicity (TSe:THg molar ratio). THg displayed a strong north-south trend for both ecoregions, while TSe presented a significantly high concentration only for CG. TSe:THg molar ratios decreased when [THg] increased, with the lowest ratios presenting in NG pups, in which [THg] exceeded toxicological thresholds of concern. [Cd] presented similar values at all study sites except CG, which presented the lowest level. In this study, density plume visualizations and statistical comparisons were made of enterococci bacteria (the main marine recreational microbial water quality indicator) densities, both before and after the upgrade of the discharge from the South Bay Ocean Outfall (SBOO) to secondary treatment level, so that the effect of this upgrade on ocean microbial water quality could be assessed. During the dry weather (bathing) season, reduction in enterococci densities was rather limited with only 2 shore stations and one kelp station showing significant reductions, and none showing increased compliance frequency. Globally, oxygen concentration in many coastal areas is depleting. River nutrient discharges may produce hypoxia events. The Southern Gulf of Mexico receives the discharges of the Grijalva-Usumacinta River System, the second largest in the Gulf of Mexico. To evaluate the influence of river discharges on dissolved oxygen concentrations in the receiving coastal ecosystem, we studied the variation of physicochemical variables in the water column. During the dry season, the influence of the river waters to the coastal area is scarce, but during the rainy season the river plume reached ~9 km offshore. The lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen (3.6 mg L -1 ) was observed within the river plume. This paper presents improvements to calculation methods used in the National Research Council's (NRC) Oil in the Sea reports from 2003 and 1985 to estimate land-based contributions of petroleum hydrocarbons to the sea from North America. Using procedures similar to the 2003 report, but with more robust methods for handling non-detections, estimated land-based contributions for 1977 and 2000 were over 50% lower than the best 1996 estimate in the NRC report. The largest loads were from the northeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico region for both the 2003 report and updated calculations. Calculations involved many sources of uncertainty, including lack of available data, variable methods of measuring and reporting data, and variable methods of reporting values below detection limits. This updated analysis of land-based loads of petroleum hydrocarbons to the sea highlights the continued need for more monitoring and research on inputs, fates and effects of these sources., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)
