The steep slopes of carbonate platforms frequently display large-scale sediment destabilization features like rockfalls, mass transport complexes, and slope erosion. The processes and factors triggering such instabilities and how they interact are a matter of ongoing discussion. We use hydroacoustic, sedimentological, and seafloor imaging data to map and characterize slope instabilities and potential controlling factors at the flank of the isolated Tregrosse carbonate bank in the Coral Sea, northeast Australia. Erosion of gullies and submarine valleys is concentrated in slope segments with the platform rim at several 10s of meters of water depth, i.e. where there is potential for sediment transfer from the bank interior to the slope. Gravity core data indicate that most sediment export from the platform occurs during sea-level fall. The toe of slopes neighboring segments with a shallower platform rim are mostly characterized by mass-transport complexes of platform rim and upper slope rocks forming extended block fields. Distal slope areas are dismantled through submarine landslides resulting in scalloped head scarps. The basal detachment surface of these submarine landslides appears to be rooted in several 100 s of meters in the subsurface at a lithological heterogeneity, which is documented by a gamma-ray peak in the downhole logging data from Ocean Drilling Program Site 817. Our findings show that (1) canyon erosion, (2) platform rim and upper slope destabilization as well as (3) lower slope dismantling, largely act independently of each other to destabilize the flanks of the carbonate bank. The complexity of the carbonate platform dismantling processes and the corresponding controlling factors shown in this study should also be considered when interpreting seismic morphological data. • Three processes control the dismantling of a carbonate platform in the Coral Sea. • (1) erosion, (2) platform rim and upper slope destabilization as well as (3) lower slope dismantling. • The processes largely act independently of each other. • Gravity core data indicate that most sediment export from the platform occurs during sea-level fall. • The complexity of platform dismantling processes should be considered when interpreting seismic morphological data. Abstract An integrated analysis of multibeam bathymetry and single- and multichannel seismic records were used to image the morpho-stratigraphy of the Alentejo Margin (Southwest Portuguese Continental Margin). The complex interaction of several alongslope and downslope processes in the area leads to the formation of various bottom current driven depositional and erosive features (moat) as well as gravity-driven features (gullies and landslides) in the Alentejo Margin. These processes feed each other contributing for the active sedimentary pattern on the area. Sines Contourite Drift (SCD) is a ~2311 km2 sedimentary feature with a perimeter of 303.9 km, 98 km length and 35 km width. Landslides occur either on steep and on gentle slopes between ~200 and 3200 mwd (meters water depth) in the study area, which has a total extent of ~85 km × 82 km. Scar concentration is higher in the middle- and lower-slope, whereas the thickest debris deposits are found in the slope basin area - Lebre Basin (LB). Translational landslides, with planar failure planes parallel to the slope surface are the main landslide typology verified in the study area. Several triggering and pre-conditioning factors, resulting from the interaction of alongslope and downslope processes, contribute for varied landslides scar concentration. Steep-slope and high sedimentation rates favour sediments under-consolidation, promoting excess pore water pressure and weak layers formation. In this paper, we show that the interaction of bottom currents with pre-existing tectonic structures promotes the complex interaction of both alongslope and downslope processes thus promoting an active and diversified geomorphological evolution and generalised slope instability. Offshore freshened groundwater (OFG) has been documented in many continental margins worldwide. OFG systems are dynamic, expanding and contracting with falling and rise sea-levels. OFG has long been thought to be an important geomorphic agent in continental margins, either via active discharge at the seafloor, which can erode depressions, or the generation of excess pore pressure, which can deform sediments and cause slope failure. It has also been proposed that OFG flow can drive the loss of sediment shear strength via salt leaching, when seawater in pores is replaced by freshwater. Here, we measure changes in the geotechnical properties of seafloor clayey silt due to salt leaching using flushing experiments, and assess the implications of these changes on the stability of siliciclastic continental margins with 2D limit equilibrium modelling. We document a ∼ 50% decrease in undrained cohesive strength of seafloor sediment after flushing, as well as a decrease in its shear strength, bulk density, and moisture content, which is similar to that reported for subaerial quick clays undergoing salt leaching. When applied to a theoretical submarine domain 300 m wide by 100 m high, we estimate that salt leaching can trigger slope failure when the thickness of the flushed layer is >3.5 m or when the slope gradient is >3°. Such conditions are primarily satisfied on the continental slope or the shallow seafloor close to the shoreline. Salt leaching by OFG flow merits consideration as a potential mechanism destablising submarine sedimentary slopes. • Role of salt leaching in seafloor stability is assessed via experiments and models. • Undrained cohesive strength of clayey silt subjected to leaching decreased by 50%. • Failure occurs when flushed layer is >3.5 m thick and slope gradient is >3°. Abstract: The continental slope off Mid Norway is one of the most unstable continental slopes in the world, being the locus for several large mass movements including the important Storegga Slide. Comparatively little is known about the initiation of slope instability in this region. Here 2D and 3D seismic reflection data are used to describe the two earliest slides to occur in the Neogene of the Møre Basin in order to aid understanding of the initiation of slope instability. The first slide was sourced from the continental slope and occurred sometime between 3.6 Ma and the time of deposition of sediments that failed as the second slide. The second slide was also sourced from the continental slope, and the sediments that failed in this slide were deposited before 1.8 Ma. This second slide is larger in volume than the Storegga Slide. The deposition of the package of sediments that failed in the two slides coincided with the deposition of a large contourite mound in the north of the basin. A polygonal fault system in this basin ceased activity at the time of arrest of an opal A/opal CT boundary. This arrest is linked temporally to the onset of slope instability. The onset and continuation of slope instability on this margin are also linked with a steepening continental slope, due to tilting and subsidence of the margin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Costa target areas exhibit the variability of slope instabilities needed to improve our understanding of sediment physical and mechanical properties in areas prone to sliding. That is why in this project, we have analysed the different slope failures events from different parts of the Costa target areas, which reflect diverse triggering mechanisms. The aim of the first part of this study was to identify the geotechnical response of the sediment to different external mechanisms (earthquake, rapid sedimentation and gas hydrate melting). We have focused on the relation between external mechanisms and the consequence change in the in-situ stress state and the physical, mechanical, and elastic properties of the sediment. In the second part of the paper, the geotechnical properties of the sediment from different Costa areas are presented. Comparison between observed geotechnical properties and the theoretical behaviour was done in order to improve our understanding of the origin of the different observed slides. Abstract: Throughout the Pleistocene the sedimentary environment on the SE Nordic Seas continental slope/outer shelf, off western Norway, has been strongly controlled by variability in the Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC), glaciations of the shelf areas and sea level changes. Acoustic and core data from the southern Vøring Plateau show a Pleistocene sequence characterised by hemipelagic sediments interfingered by diamictons on the upper slope. The area of the 7.25 14C ka BP Storegga Slide shows evidence of a long history of Pleistocene mega-slides. During the last interglacial, and most likely also during previous interglacials, the slide region has been the locus of rapid deposition between water depths of 800 and 1200 m, as a result of NwAC winnowing along the upper slope. The North Sea Fan region is strongly influenced by glacigenic debris flows (GDFs) deposited during glacial advances reaching the shelf edge, when the Norwegian Channel was occupied by the Norwegian Channel Ice Stream. It appears that GDF activity was initiated at ca. Marine Isotope Stage 12. Interbedded between the debris flow sequences, mega-slide events such as the Møre and Tampen slides have been identified. During glaciations, when the entire SE Nordic Seas continental shelf was covered by extensive grounded ice sheets, basal till were transported to the shelf edge from where subsequent mass movement occurred. During late glaciation/early deglaciation meltwater plumes were released at the time of disintegration of ice streams in the Norwegian Channel, as is evidenced from the last deglaciation of the margin at ca. 15 14C ka BP. The plume material was transported northwards by currents, before rapidly deposited as a thick package within the Storegga Slide area and on the south Vøring Plateau. Based on identification and dating of iceberg scourings, glacial erosion surfaces and delta deposits on the shelf, subsidence rates between 0.7 and 1.2 m/ky have been calculated for the last ca. 250 ka.
