Invasive species that outcompete endemic ones and toxic harmful algae that cause algal blooms threaten marine resources like fisheries, aquaculture, and even tourism. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding can help as a method for early alert. In this study, we have analyzed communities inhabiting six lagoons within the Gulf of Lion (northwest Mediterranean Sea) with spatial protection as RAMSAR and Natura 2000 sites. Employing the COI gene as the only metabarcode, we found 15 genera that have caused recognized algal bloom outbreaks in the studied lagoons since 2000. In addition, seven alien invasive species that can pose risks to the rich marine resources of the zone and lagoons were also found. The results found from eDNA are consistent with events of toxic algae blooms before and after the sampling moment and with reported occurrences of the invasive species in nearby Mediterranean areas. Multivariate multiple analysis showed the importance of anthropic pressure in the abundance of these nuisance species. Studies focusing on patterns of spatial variation in marine soft-bottom assemblages suggest that variability is mainly concentrated at small spatial scale (from tens of centimeters to few meters), but there is still a lack of knowledge about the consistency of this spatial pattern across habitats and seasons. To address this issue, we quantified the variability in the structure of macrozoobenthic assemblages and in the abundance of dominant macroinvertebrate species in the Mellah Lagoon (Algeria) at three spatial scales, i.e., Plot (meters apart), Station (10's m apart) and Site (kms apart) scale, in Ruppia maritima (Ruppia) beds and unvegetated sediments (Unvegetated), and in two dates in winter and two dates in summer 2016. Spatial variability of the most dominant bivalve Mytilaster marioni varied significantly between habitats, but consistent across the two seasons, with a more heterogeneous distribution in Ruppia than in Unvegetated at the Station scale. Furthermore, a second-order interaction among the hierarchical nature of spatial variability, season and habitat emerged for the assemblage structure. Spatial variability between habitats varied significantly in winter, with the largest variation at the Plot scale in Unvegetated and more heterogenous assemblages at the Plot and Site scales than at the Station scale in Ruppia , but did not vary in summer when most of the variance was at the Site scale. Coral bleaching events have become more frequent and severe due to ocean warming. While the large-scale impacts of bleaching events are well-known, there is growing recognition of the importance of small-scale spatial variation in bleaching and survival probability of individual coral colonies. By quantifying bleaching in 108 massive Porites colonies spread across Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, during the 2016 bleaching event, we investigated how hydrodynamic exposure levels and colony size contribute to local variability in bleaching prevalence and extent. Our results revealed that exposed locations were the least impacted by bleaching, while lagoonal areas exhibited the highest prevalence of bleaching and colony-level bleaching extents. Such patterns of bleaching could be due to prolonged exposure to warm water in the lagoon. Heatwaves often cause mass mortality of organisms in seagrass areas, and they eventually alter some ecological functions of seagrass ecosystems. In subarctic regions, however, the effects of heatwaves on seagrass areas are still unclear. In a subarctic lagoon of northern Japan, we examined the effects of heatwaves on the Hokkai shrimp, Pandalus latirostris , a commercially exploited species distributed in seagrass areas of northern Japan and eastern Russia. A long-term survey of the surface water temperature in the lagoon clarified a gradual increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwave events since 1999. Surveys of the water temperature at a seagrass area in the lagoon during summer have also demonstrated that the maximum water temperature had been exceeding 25 °C, unusually high for this location, regardless of water depth. These results indicate that the effects of heatwaves in seagrass areas in a subarctic region had become as severe as those in tropical and temperate regions. We also experimentally evaluated the effects of this unusually high water temperature (25 °C) on the survival of P. latirostris by changing the length of exposure time. Some individuals suffered damage to their intestinal mucosal structure after exposure for 12 h or longer, and all individuals died after exposure for 120 h. Our results suggest that heatwaves possibly cause mass mortality in P. latirostris in the following sequence: heat stress, damage to the intestinal epithelial mucosal structure, degradation of nutrient absorption and immunological function of the intestine, energy deficiency and disease infection, and finally mortality. Abstract In four Po River lagoons, functional diversity of free-living nematodes was studied according to five biological traits (feeding type, life history, tail shape, body length and shape) considered singularly and combined in a Biological Traits Analysis (BTA). With the exception of 'Body length', similar distribution patterns were obtained for the other biological traits, considered singularly or in combination. From a functional point of view, the higher number of slender c-p3 selective deposit feeders with elongated tails rendered the assemblage in Marinetta-Vallona different from those in the other waterbodies where, by contrast, the nematodes were mainly represented by c-p2 non-selective deposit feeders with clavate tails and variable body lengths and shapes. On the contrary, the spatial patterns highlighted by genera data did not perfectly overlap with those identified by the biological traits. From a taxonomic point of view, the change ascribable to the higher abundance of Terschellingia in Marinetta-Vallona was comparable to those attributable to the other dominant genera (Sabatieria and Daptonema) in the other lagoons. Only the biological traits analysis was able to indicate that the dominance of Terschellingia in Marinetta-Vallona led also to a functional change within the assemblage. According to both functional and taxonomic approaches, the nematodes seemed influenced by polybrominated diphenyl ethers (ΣPBDEs), whose concentrations in the sediments clearly exceeded their toxicity thresholds in Marinetta-Vallona, suggesting, therefore, that this group of emerging pollutants might induce a nematodes response at both taxonomic and functional level. Our findings suggest that for scarcely biodiverse assemblages, such as those of river lagoons, the BTA may not provide further information than the analysis of single traits while both these functional approaches may add relevant ecological information to traditional taxonomic-based methods, representing therefore a potential integration in the use of nematodes in monitoring actions. Abstract Understanding the nature and origins of food sources supporting coastal lagoon-inhabiting organisms is necessary to evaluate the ecological status of such ecosystems. The trophic ecology of a bivalve species Spondylus crassisquama was studied in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon (Baja California, Mexico), combining stable isotope (SI), fatty acid (FA) and sterol analyses along a transect under oceanic influences. The second objective of the study was to investigate if sterol compositions give complementary information to those obtained from FA and SI. Temporal and spatial patterns of the three biomarkers in bivalve tissues suggest oceanic inputs at the mouth of the lagoon, while the inner station was characterized by a contribution of local sources including an important role of micro heterotrophs. This study revealed that the association of lipid biomarkers provide higher taxonomic resolution of the spatiotemporal heterogeneity in nutrient sources influencing the trophic functioning of a large coastal lagoon. Abstract Taxonomic Sufficiency (TS), the use of coarser taxonomic resolution in monitoring plans, has been receiving increasing attention in last years. A comprehensive dataset of macrobenthos from 18 Italian lagoons in a range of different latitude, typology, salinity and surface area, was analysed in order to test the efficiency of TS, in terms of correlation between patterns at level of species and patterns resulting from different levels of taxonomic aggregation. First, TS was applied on a range of univariate indices, providing complementary information on macrobenthic community, in order to test the efficiency, in a contest of different taxonomic composition, and different number of lower taxa belonging to the same higher taxon in each lagoon. Then, TS was applied on multivariate analyses, in order to test whether the efficiency changes between two different scales: local (comparison of sites nested within each lagoon) and regional (comparison among lagoons), and with different data transformation. The patterns resulting from univariate indices and multivariate analyses, at both local and regional scales, were retained till family level, despite the different levels of taxonomic composition and different number of lower taxa belonging to the same higher taxon of different lagoons. Nevertheless, the correlation values among matrices and the effect of data transformation differed between regional and local scales. Our results support the efficiency of TS until family level, but at the same time underline the need of scale- and region-specific baseline knowledge prior application of TS in lagoons. The present study investigated the distribution and diversity of stationary fishing gears in Songkhla Lake and assessed the effects of the most abundant gear in the lake, the standing trap, on sedimentation and the abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates. Our survey revealed that six types of fishing gear were used: standing traps, fyke nets, fish aggregating devices, seabass net cages, small traps and stationary lift nets. The type of fishing gear used depended on the depth of water. The density of installed standing traps reached a maximum of 357 traps/km2, which was the highest density of any fishing gear installed on the lake. They were mainly set in the middle part of the lake, where the water was less than 2 m deep. Sedimentation was examined inside and outside the areas influenced by standing traps. Sediment samples were collected with sediment traps in the northeast and southwest monsoon seasons. Sedimentation rates inside and outside the areas influenced by standing traps differed at some sites but the pattern was not consistent across seasons. Sedimentation rates were higher in the northeast monsoon season with the average rate 1132.32 ± 43.73 (mean ± SE) g m−2day−1 when precipitation and run-off were higher and 323.98 ± 10.68 g m−2day−1 in the southwest monsoon or dry season. Moreover, the proportion of finer clay particles was greater in the sediment from the areas influenced by traps. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities between the two areas were different. A bivalve, Potamocorbula sp., which dominated benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, had a higher abundance in areas influenced by traps. The effects of stationary fishing gears on sedimentation and benthic macroinvertebrates highlighted in this study suggest that the long-term deployment of these gears may affect food chain dynamics in this lagoon system. The Ria de Aveiro is an important coastal lagoon for wildlife in Portugal, where the production of bivalves reaches approximately 2700 tons annually. However, the illegal overfishing of bivalves is frequent in this lagoon, which causes critical changes in the ecosystem. In this study, using a developed food-web model (Ecopath model), the ecological carrying capacity (ECC) and maximum sustained yield (MSY) of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum were estimated, and the effects of further increases in clam biomass on other species were investigated. The results showed that 1) the current biomass and legal catch of R. philippinarum do not yet exceed the ECC (172.40 tons km−2) or the MSY (86.20 tons km−2 year−1) in Ria de Aveiro; 2) the harvested Manila clams of the MSY represent removing from the ecosystem ∼ 581 tons carbon (C) and ∼83 tons nitrogen (N) annually, with substantial ecological and economic implications; and 3) a further increase in the biomass levels of this species may cause the ecotrophic efficiency of other groups to become unrealistic, potentially leading to decreases in ecosystem transfer efficiency, biodiversity and health. The results here are expected to guide the sustainable development and management of bivalve aquaculture in Ria de Aveiro and the protection of the local environment. • The current catching of clams is below the maximum sustained yield in Ria de Aveiro. • The harvested clams represent removing ∼581 tons C and 83 tons N annually. • Increases in the clams biomass may cause a decline in ecosystem health. Following the planned FAO Ecosystem Restoration Programme for estuarine habitats to support estuarine fisheries and early life stages of estuary-dependent marine fish, direct relationships of total seagrass and eelgrass Zostera m. capricorni areas and biomass with fish harvest were derived for a range of slightly to highly urbanized coastal lagoons that are expected to support the larvae and juveniles of estuary-dependent marine fisheries. Fish harvest and seagrass area and biomass in the lagoons increased with moderate catchment total suspended sediment and total phosphorus loads due to lagoon flushing rates directing excess silt and nutrients out to sea via the lagoon entrances. Well managed, sewered catchment management works are shown that could assist estuary managers maintain seagrass for estuarine and offshore estuary-dependent fisheries by maintenance of seagrass and fishery ecological processes. A time series data of macrobenthic invertebrates of Valli di Comacchio lagoon (northern Adriatic) from 1996 to 2015, was analysed using Biological Traits Analysis, structural indices, AMBI and M-AMBI indices, with a twofold aim to: firstly, test the resilience of the system, and, secondly, test the influence of climate changes, in terms of temperature and precipitation pattern, on macrobenthic dynamics. Along the studied period macrobenthic community showed marked fluctuations, in terms of richness, diversity, biological traits and ecological groups, which could be related with environmental instability of the lagoon. At the same time, a general tendency towards a deterioration of ecological condition of the lagoon was observed, with a general decrease in species richness, diversity, percentage of sensitive species, and a general increase in the proportion of the more opportunistic trait modalities, such as deposit feeders, burrowing, infaunal and short living animals. Increasing yearly temperature explained only a small part of the variability of macrobenthic community, in terms of biological traits and diversity indices, and this was likely due to the effect of natural fluctuations of environmental parameters and anthropogenic disturbance. Nevertheless, all metrics used are consistent in identifying the response of benthic community to a severe disturbance, likely related with the summer heatwave in 2003. Less marked signs of disturbance were observed also in relations to the thermal anomaly of 2012. Biological Traits Analysis combined with more classical structural and ecological indices, proved to be efficient in identifying temporal changes of the community. Our results suggest that the expected increase in frequency, magnitude and duration of heatwaves could pose serious threat to the resilience capacity of lagoonal macrobenthic community. Several species of marine fish use different coastal systems especially during their early development. However, these habitats are jeopardized by anthropogenic influences threatening the success of fish populations, and urgent measures are needed to priorize areas to protect their sustainability. We applied taxonomic (Δ+) and functional (X+) distinctiveness indices that represent taxonomic composition and functional roles to assess biodiversity of three different costal systems: bays, coastal lagoons and oceanic beaches. We hypothesized that difference in habitat characteristics, especially in the more dynamism and habitat homogeneity of oceanic beaches compared with more habitat diversity and sheltered conditions of bays and coastal lagoons results in differences in fish richness and taxonomic and functional diversity. The main premise is that communities phylogenetically and functionally more distinct have more interest in conservation policies. Significant differences (P < 0.004) were found in the species richness, Δ+ and X+ among the three systems according to PERMANOVA. Fish richness was higher in bays compared with the coastal lagoons and oceanic beaches. Higher Δ+ was found for the coastal lagoons compared with the bays and oceanic beaches, with the bays having some values below the confidence limit. Similar patterns were found for X+, although all values were within the confidence limits for the bays, suggesting that the absence of some taxa does not interfere in functional diversity. The hypothesis that taxonomic and functional structure of fish assemblages differ among the three systems was accepted and we suggest that coastal lagoons should be priorized in conservation programs because they support more taxonomic and functional distinctiveness. Coastal lagoon ecology often changes on progression from the open, well-flushed mouth region to the depositional zone furthest from the open sea. This is generally considered consequent on increasing 'confinement' and associated features, rather than on the often co-occurringly decreasing salinity. The 12 km Rainbow Channel connecting part of Moreton Bay, a microtidal leaky lagoon, to the adjacent Pacific provides a gradient of increasing confinement without any significant salinity change, i.e. a tenfold increase in water residence time for a salinity decrease of <1. Macrobenthic faunal assemblages characterising intertidal Zostera seagrass at strategic points along its length were compared to test whether their nature changed in conformity with confinement models. Results suggest that it does not; faunal abundance, species richness, evenness and composition remaining effectively unchanged along the gradient. Seagrass systems may constitute a special case because they decouple renewal times of the overlying water and local organic enrichment/decomposition; as may leaky lagoons because of their high tidal velocities. A large-scale sluice gate, which was built in southwest Japan as a national project to reclaim and desalinate lagoon water in 1974, was removed between 2005 and 2009. To examine the impact of this removal on both Nakaumi Lagoon and the nearby coastal waters, we analyzed the foraminiferal assemblages of a coastal sediment core and of samples obtained during 10 years of lagoon monitoring (2001–2010). Detailed 210Pb (ex) dating of the sediment core revealed an increased sediment accumulation rate in the coastal waters, implying that discharge of fine-grained materials, including organic matter, was facilitated by removal of the sluice gate. The observed increase in agglutinated foraminifera and decrease in calcareous species was related to the sediment accumulation rate, and these changes occurred close to 2005, when sluice-gate removal began. In Nakaumi Lagoon, the sporadic presence of the coastal species Quinqueloculina seminula within the 6-m water column and the decline in the lagoon-adapted Ammonia "beccarii" have occurred since 2005. The removal of the sluice gate, plus the sea-level rise, allowed greater seawater inflow and stabilized the monthly deep-water salinity fluctuations in Nakaumi Lagoon. • Removal of sluice gate influenced the dynamics of coastal and lagoon waters. • Removal of sluice gate increased the sedimentation rate in coastal waters. • Seasonal fluctuations of deep-water salinity in the lagoon stabilized. • Benthic foraminiferal mobility can be utilized as a new environmental monitoring method. The assessment of connectivity in marine ecosystems is a requirement to adequate fisheries management. In this study we have selected two commercially exploited migratory species, European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), to evaluate the connectivity between the Curonian Lagoon and the coastal Baltic Sea. Our results indicate that isolation between the coastal lagoon and the adjacent sea area does not lead to the formation of genetic structure in migratory fish species. However, both species do register subpopulations coexisting in the area without interbreeding. This indicates that the fisheries management for migratory fishes in coastal lagoons affects a wider area than just the coastal lagoon. European perch, being a postglacial recolonizer from various refugees, has four different subpopulations, while the mechanism that maintains this division remains unexplored. The feeding migrations of European perch to the coastal zone suggest that the reproduction might occur elsewhere and that the factors for genetic structure suggested at the Baltic Sea scale might operate during these migrations. For European smelt, we discuss the existence of two different ecotypes, one lagoonal and one diadromous, and the different registered spawning locations as explicative causes for the maintenance of two genetically divergent clusters. The lagoonal ecotype reproduces and spawns inside the Curonian Lagoon while the diadromous one lives in the open Baltic Sea, performing spawning migrations to the lagoon and the mouth of Nemunas river, thus, maintaining the genetic divergence among them. However, our results indicate that there are no differences in size between both clusters, while the lagoonal population is expected to be smaller, forbidding the determination of two genetically different ecotypes. We conclude that there are no geographically and genetically separated populations of these two species in the lagoon-sea- terrestrial inlets continuum, and unified stock management for the coastal Baltic Sea and the Curonian lagoon is required. • Coastal lagoon isolation from the sea doesn't lead to genetic structure formation in migratory fishes. • Fisheries management for migratory fishes in coastal lagoons affects a wider area. • European perch and smelt don't present separated populations in the lagoon-sea continuum. • Unified stock management for the coastal Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon is required. Acknowledged as among the worst invasive marine species, Mnemiopsis leidyi has spread through European Seas since the mid-1980’s. Here we report a bimonthly survey conducted in 2010–11 in three lagoons (Bages-Sigean, Thau and Berre) and at two adjacent coastal stations (Sète and SOMLIT-Marseille) along the French Mediterranean coast. M. leidyi was present only in Berre and Bages-Sigean with maximum abundances observed in late summer. M. leidyi adults were present year round in Berre with the largest organisms (∼6 cm) observed in April. In Bages-Sigean, they occurred in sufficient abundance to be recorded by fishermen between August and November. Multiple linear regressions highlighted that abundance in both lagoons was mainly influenced by direct effects of salinity and chlorophyll- a , and temperature to a lesser extent. While M. leidyi has not yet been recorded in Thau, the lagoon is continually monitored to detect the potential establishment of M. leidyi . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In coastal lagoons, many studies indicated that macrozoobenthic assemblages undergo marked temporal fluctuations as related to the strong environmental variability of these systems. However, most of these studies have not assessed the seasonal patterns of these fluctuations and none of them has investigated the consistency of this variation in different areas within the same lagoon system. In this study, we assessed patterns of variation at multiple temporal (date, season and year) scales in two different areas in the coastal lagoon of Mellah (northeast Algeria). These areas (hereafter Shore and Center ) are representative of two different environments typically found in coastal lagoons. The Shore (water depth of about 1.5–2 m) is characterized by relatively higher hydrodynamics, sand to silty-sand sediments and the presence of vegetation ( Ruppia maritima ), the Center (water depth of about 3–3.5 m) is characterized by mud to sandy-mud, organic-enriched sediments due to fine particle accumulation. Results showed two distinct patterns of seasonal variation in Shore and Center assemblages for two consecutive years. In Shore , species richness ( S ), total abundance ( N ) and the abundance of several dominant taxa were highest in summer and/or autumn. This pattern can be related to the local environmental conditions maintaining relatively well oxidized conditions, while increasing food availability, and favoring the recruitment of species and individuals in summer/autumn. On the contrary in Center , S was lowest in summer and autumn, and N and the abundance of fewer dominant taxa were lowest in summer. In Center , the bivalve Loripes lucinalis showed a 10-fold increase from summer to autumn in both years, likely related to the lagoon's hydrodynamics favoring larval transport and settlement in the central sector of the lagoon. Overall, the seasonal variation found in Center followed a regression/recovery pattern typical of opportunistic assemblages occurring in confined organic-enriched environments. In conclusion, our results provide new insight into the patterns of seasonal variation in lagoon soft-sediment benthos and highlight the importance of local environmental conditions on this variation. This study provides a valuable tool for adopting appropriate monitoring strategies in these systems, with special reference to Southern-Eastern Mediterranean lagoons which are expected to suffer from increasing coastal development and human pressure in the near future. The high global occurrence of phthalates in different environmental matrixes has resulted in the detection of their metabolites in human urine, blood, and breast milk, indicating a widespread human exposure. In addition, the notorious endocrine disrupting effects of phthalates have shown that they mimic or antagonize the action of endogenous hormones, consequently producing adverse effects on reproduction, growth and development. Herein, we have studied the occurrence of phthalate esters (PEs) in water, sediment and biota of two lagoons (Epe and Lagos) in Nigeria. Two fish species ( Tilapia guineensis , and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus ) and a crustacean (the African river prawn - Macrobrachium vollenhovenii ) were analyzed for PEs levels using a HPLC method and the derived values were used for calculating bioconcentration factor (BCF), biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) and phthalate pollution index (PPI) in the biota and environment. We observed that the growth and health condition of the fish species were normal with a k-factor of >1. Sediment PE levels were compared with water, at both lagoons showing concentration pattern that is characterized as DEHP = DEP > DBP. We observed that DBP was the predominant compound in T. guineensis , C. nigrodigitatus and African prawn, at both lagoons, showing organ-specific differences in bioconcentration (BCF and BSAF) patterns in the fish species. While there were no observed consistency in the pattern of PE concentration in fish organs, elevated DBP levels in different fish organs may be related to fish habitat and degradation level of phthalates. Low concentration of DEHP, compared with DBP and DEP, was measured in fish organs and whole prawn body. The BSAF values for DEHP were lowest, and highest for DBP for all species at both lagoons, and DEHP easily accumulated more in the sediment (sediment PPI = 0.28 and 0.16 for Epe and Lagos lagoon, respectively). Overall, our findings suggest a broader environmental and human health implication of the high PE levels in these lagoons since they represent significant sources of aquatic food resources for the neighboring communities. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is chronically exposed to agricultural run-off containing pesticides, many of which are known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Here, we measure mRNA transcript abundance of two EDC biomarkers in wild populations of barramundi ( Lates calcarifer ) and coral trout ( Plectropomus leopardus and Plectropomus maculatus ). Transcription levels of liver vitellogenin ( vtg ) differed significantly in both species amongst sites with different exposures to agricultural run-off; brain aromatase ( cyp19a1b ) revealed some differences for barramundi only. Exposure to run-off from sugarcane that contains pesticides is a likely pathway given (i) significant associations between barramundi vtg transcription levels, catchment sugarcane land use, and river pesticide concentrations, and (ii) consistency between patterns of coral trout vtg transcription levels and pesticide distribution in the GBR lagoon. Given the potential consequences of such exposure for reproductive fitness and population dynamics, these results are cause for concern for the sustainability of fisheries resources downstream from agricultural land uses. The physiological status of Cystoseira compressa , Padina pavonica and Palisada tenerrima was studied by in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, pigment content, stoichiometry (C:N), accumulation of UV photoprotectors and antioxidant activity; comparing their photosynthetic response in a coastal lagoon (Mar Menor) and in Mediterranean coastal waters. In general, the specimens reached their highest ETR max in spring in the Lagoon, but in summer in the Mediterranean, coinciding with their maximum biomass peak. The species exhibited a dynamic photoinhibition. Except C. compressa , they showed a lower decrease in F v / F m and higher recovery rates in the Mediterranean populations when exposed to high irradiance. The higher salinity and temperature of the lagoon could impair the photoprotection mechanisms. The acclimation to lagoon environments is species-specific and involves complex regulatory mechanisms. The results underline the importance of N in repair, avoidance, quenching and scavenging mechanisms. In general, Lagoon specimens showed higher pigment concentration. Although xanthophylls play important photo-protective and antioxidant roles, the observed trend is more likely to be explained by the higher temperatures reached in the lagoon compared to Mediterranean. Therefore the studied photosynthetic and biochemical mechanisms can be effective not only for high irradiance, but also for higher temperatures in a climate change scenario, but are highly dependent on nutrient availability. Abstract: We propose a modelling approach relating the functioning of a transitional ecosystem with the spatial extension of its habitats. A test case is presented for the lagoon of Venice, discussing the results in the context of the application of current EU directives. The effects on food web functioning due to changes related to manageable and unmanageable drivers were investigated. The modelling procedure involved the use of steady-state food web models and network analysis, respectively applied to estimate the fluxes of energy associated with trophic interactions, and to compute indices of food web functioning. On the long term (hundred years) temporal scale, the model indicated that the expected loss of salt marshes will produce further changes at the system level, with a lagoon showing a decrease in the energy processing efficiency. On the short term scale, simulation results indicated that fishery management accompanied by seagrass restoration measures would produce a slight transition towards a more healthy system, with higher energy cycling, and maintaining a good balance between processing efficiency and resilience. Scenarios presented suggest that the effectiveness of short term management strategies can be better evaluated when contextualized in the long term trends of evolution of a system. Abstract: Respiration and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) production by the farmed Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were calculated to assess their importance as carbon dioxide (CO2) sink/source in the Sacca di Scardovari (Po Delta River, Italy). The ratio of CO2 released to CaCO3 precipitated was calculated as a function of the near-bottom temperature. From our estimates, M. galloprovincialis sequestered 136.6 m−2 year−1 for shell formation, but the CO2 fluxes due to respiration and calcification resulted 187.8 and 86.8 m−2 year−1 respectively. Mussel farming seems therefore to be a significant additional source of CO2 to seawater. For this reason shell formation in cultivated shellfish cannot be part of carbon trading systems. Abstract: The Sabaudia's lake consists of a protected coastal lagoon, located in the central Italy, historically characterized by recurrent mortality events of marine fauna during warmer months. A field study was monthly conducted on mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis cultivated inside the lagoon, measuring hemocyte parameters as total circulating count (THC), viability (HV), spreading and oxidative response to in vitro phagocytosis stimulation. A depression of the immune response was observed during the spring season, as indicated by higher values of hemocyte circularity and lower luminescence levels related to respiratory burst, also associated to modulation of THC and HV. The water temperature and the oxygen concentration appeared as the major environmental factors having influence on the phagocytosis activity. Therefore, the hemocyte variations have been intended as early danger signal to evaluate the immunodepression induced by the environmental stressors which could reveal in advance the development of critical situations for mussel survival. A key challenge for natural resource management is how to detect effects of environmental stress on individuals and populations before declines in abundance occur. Variability in carbon and nitrogen isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) among consumers can provide information on the population trophic niche and how it may change in response to environmental stress. We measured δ13C and δ15N values in primary producers and in an ecosystem engineer, the bioturbating sandprawn Kraussillichirus kraussi, in Langebaan Lagoon, South Africa, along a human disturbance gradient. Diet partitioning mixing models were coupled with isotope niche analyses and individual body condition data to investigate shifts in resource utilisation and diet plasticity from minimally to highly disturbed sites. The δ15N values of seagrass, Zostera capensis indicated a nutrient gradient, with the highest δ15N values at highly disturbed sites indicating either anthropogenic or marine nitrogen inputs. A decreasing δ15N signal with distance from human disturbance/mouth of lagoon was however not evident for sandprawns nor their presumed dietary sources (phytoplankton, microphytobenthos or sediment organic matter), likely because of faster isotope turnover time compared to seagrass and/or differential fractionation for sandprawns among the sites. Sandprawn isotope niche sizes varied among sites, with no trend along the disturbance gradient. The smallest niche coincided with uniform feeding on microphytobenthos according to mixing models. On an individual level, deviating isotope values from population means were correlated to better body condition, suggesting that a divergent feeding strategy is beneficial. Abstract: DNA damage was evaluated by comet assay in the haemolymph of two bivalve species Ruditapes decussatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Ria Formosa lagoon (south Coast of Portugal). Clams and mussels were sampled from sites close to each other to determine interspecific responses to similar environmental conditions, considering also seasonal and gender differences. Coupled with genotoxic effect, another damage biomarker (lipid peroxidation) was analysed to verify if the conditions that instigate DNA damage can be related with injury to cell membranes. For both species, DNA damage was low, reflecting the low levels of genotoxic contaminants in the lagoon, and no interspecific differences were found. However, seasonal differences were established for both bivalve species, reflecting higher environmental stress in summer. Regarding gender susceptibility, only clams showed differences in percentage of Tail DNA, with females more sensitive to DNA damage than males. Additionally, results for clams point out that factors responsible for LPO may not be the same as those causing genotoxicity. This study demonstrated that DNA damage is a sensitive biomarker to discriminate spatial, temporal and gender differences, being an appropriate biomarker for genotoxicity evaluation even in places of low contamination, such as the Ria Formosa lagoon. Abstract: Ihavandippolu, the northernmost atoll of the Maldives, experienced severe coral bleaching and mortality in 1998 followed by several bleaching episodes in the last decade. Coral cover in the 11 study sites surveyed in July–December of 2011 in the 3–5 m depth range varied from 1.7 to 51%. Reefs of the islands located in the center of Ihavandippolu lagoon have exhibited a very low coral recovery since 1998 and remain mostly degraded 12 years after the impact. At the same time, some reefs, especially in the inner part of the eastern ring of the atoll, demonstrate a high coral cover (>40%) with a dominance of branching Acropora that is known to be one of the coral genera that is most susceptible to thermal stress. The last severe bleaching event in 2010 resulted in high coral mortality in some sites of the atoll. Differences in coral mortality rates and proportion between “susceptible” and “resistant” taxa in study sites are apparently related to long-term adaptation and local hydrological features that can mitigate thermal impacts. Abundant herbivorous fish observed in the atoll prevent coral overgrowth by macroalgae even on degraded reefs. Despite the frequent influence of temperature anomalies and having less geomorphologic refuges for coral survivals than other larger Maldivian atolls, a major part of observed coral communities in Ihavandippolu Atoll exhibits high resilience and potential for further acclimatization to a changing environment. Abstract: Diatom fossils from core sediments and living diatoms from water samples of Notoro Lagoon in northern Japan were examined to evaluate natural climate effects on lagoon environmental changes. In 1974, the artificial inlet was excavated. Immediately after, the anoxic bottom water in Notoro Lagoon began to disappear due to an increasing water exchange rate. However, chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the bottom water of Notoro Lagoon gradually increased, with fluctuations, during the last 30 years. In addition, the dominant diatom assemblages in Notoro Lagoon shifted to ice-related and spring bloom taxa after the excavation. The dominant taxa of each year in the sediment core were also strongly related to the timing of lagoon ice melting. This is because the COD in Notoro Lagoon was affected by the deposited volume of blooming diatoms, which was controlled by the duration of ice cover and the timing of ice discharge to the Okhotsk Sea likely due to an air pressure pattern change over the northern North Pacific like the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Abstract: The Valli di Comacchio is one of most representative choked (not influenced by the tidal regime) lagoons in the Mediterranean and Europe. We compared the ecological status (ES) classification (sensu European Water Framework Directive, 2000/60/EC) of the Valli obtained through supporting physicochemical elements and biotic indices. The variability of water parameters was investigated through 1997–2002 at 4 permanent sampling stations. During the six years of investigation, macrobenthic data were collected to identify the response of several biological indices (taxonomic, functional and ecological). ES classification through supporting physicochemical elements resulted in discordant patterns. Nor taxonomic neither functional measures were able to add more information than that given by univariate biodiversity measures. Gaps and bias of the indices used were identified. Due to the absence of well defined environmental gradients, taxonomic and functional measures loose most of their usefulnesses. ES classification through ecological indices (M-AMBI and BITS) resulted in quite a concordant pattern, although BITS underestimated ES when there was a strong dominance of one opportunist family in the benthic community. Abstract: The Ria Formosa lagoon is an ecosystem whose water quality reflects the anthropogenic influence upon the surrounding areas. In this lagoon, the clam Ruditapes decussatus has a great economical importance and has been widely used as a biomonitor. A multibiomarker approach (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, metallothionein, lipid peroxidation, acetylcholinesterase, alkali-labile phosphates, DNA damage) was applied to assess the environmental quality of this ecosystem and the accumulation of contaminants and their potential adverse effects on clams. Clams were sampled in different shellfish beds in the period between July 2007 and December 2008 and abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen of seawater and organic matter in the sediment), condition index, metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb), TBTs and PAHs concentrations were measured in clam tissues. Data was integrated using Principal Component Analyses and biomarker indices: IBR (Integrated Biomarker Response) and HSI (Health Status Index). This multibiomarker approach enabled discrimination of a time and space trend between sites with different degrees of anthropogenic contamination, identifying one of them (site 2) as the most stressful and summer months as the most critical period for clams due to an increase of environmental stress (anthropogenic pressure along with extreme environmental conditions, e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, organic matter in the sediments, etc). The selected biomarkers provided an integrated response to assess the environmental quality of the system, proving to be a useful approach when complex mixtures of contaminants occur. Abstract: The present work aimed to identify the main environmental drivers shaping temporal and spatial dynamics of macrobenthic communities within a eutrophic coastal lagoon. Sediments in the Óbidos lagoon showed a gradient of increasing metal contamination from the inlet area to inner branches. The mid-lower lagoon area exhibited an intermediate contaminated condition between the inlet and upstream areas, suggesting that the effects of the organic loadings into the lagoon may be reflected until this area. This transitional feature was corroborated by biological data, with macrobenthic assemblages displaying characteristics of down- and upstream areas. Macrobenthic abundance peaked in winter, which was associated with a higher nutrient availability (mainly ammonium) and the proliferation of green macroalgae in mid-lower and inner lagoon areas. However, massive macroalgae growth resulted in a sharp decrease of macrobenthic diversity and abundance in spring, particularly where the higher amounts of decaying algae were detected. Higher dissimilarities between assemblages were detected during winter (and spring, for trophic composition), while in summer, differences were highly attenuated. The least contaminated area (close to the sea inlet) experienced smaller temporal variations for environmental variables, as well as the lowest temporal biological variability. This area was dominated by carnivores, which were related with increased salinity. Deposit-feeders were numerically dominant in the lagoon, being generally spread within organically enriched sandy and muddy areas. The high concentration of chlorophyll a and suspended particulate matter in water was reflected in the abundance of deposit-feeders/suspension-feeders, taking benefit of the high primary productivity. On the other hand, deposit-feeders/herbivores responded to the decay of macroalgae mats in the sediment. Biological associations varied with the biological data used (taxonomic versus trophic group composition; abundance versus biomass), highlighting the relevance of the combination of different data analysis’ approaches. In general, BIOENV analysis indicated total phosphorus, biomass of Ulva, metals and organic carbon and nitrogen as being significantly influencing benthic patterns. On the other hand, discrepancies in ecological behaviours of some taxa were also detected in the present study stressing the need for additional studies on the relationships between macrobenthic communities and environmental variables. Abstract: Overfishing and progressive environmental degradation of the Vietnamese Cau Hai coastal lagoon appear to be threatening the ecological integrity and water quality of the largest estuarine complex of Southeast Asia. This study assessed the relationships between the density of traditional fisheries and organic matter sedimentary contents in Cau Hai lagoon. Data revealed that the density of stake traps (the most common fishing gear used in this lagoon), decreasing hydrodynamic energy in shallow water, causes the accumulation of a large fraction of organic matter refractory to degradation. The relationship between biopolymeric carbon (a proxy of availability of organic matter) and stake traps density fits a S-shape curve. The logistic equation calculated a stake traps density of 90 m of net per hectare, as the threshold over which maximum accumulation of organic matter occurs in Cau Hai. With such level of stake trap density, and assuming a theoretical stationary status of the lagoon, the time necessary for the system to reach hypoxic conditions has been calculated to be circa three weeks. We recommend that this density threshold should not be exceeded in the Cau Hai lagoon and that further analyses of organic loads in the sediment should be conducted to monitor the trophic conditions of this highly eutrophicated lagoon. Abstract: The effects of two lubricating oils on nematode assemblages of a Tunisian lagoon were investigated in a microcosm experiment. Sediment from a pristine site in Ghar El Melh lagoon (Western Mediterranean) was treated with either mineral oil (Mobil 20W-50), a synthetic lubricant (Mobil 0W-40), the same two lubricants after use in a vehicle, and effects were examined after 5weeks. Univariate analysis showed significant differences between most univariate indices of the nematode assemblages in all the lubricant treatments as compared to the control. Total nematode abundance (I), species richness (d) and number of species (S) decreased significantly in all lubricant contaminated microcosms. However, evenness was not affected in all treated replicates except in used mineral lubricant treatment where it was significantly higher than in the control. Diversity (H′) was only altered in synthetic lubricant treatments. Results from multivariate analyses of the species abundance data demonstrated that responses of nematode species to the two lubricants treatments were varied: Daptonema trabeculosum was eliminated in all lubricant treatments and seemed to be an intolerant species to oil contamination. Spirinia gerlachi increased in mineral lubricant treatments (“clean” and used) but was eliminated in all synthetic lubricant treatments. This species could be categorized as “resistant” to mineral oil contamination and intolerant to synthetic lubricant contamination. Terschellingia longicaudata increased only in synthetic lubricant treatments (“clean” and used) and appeared to be a “synthetic oil-resistant” species. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Karavasta is the widest and most important lagoon in Albania. This study aimed to assess the ecological quality status of the lagoon, acquire knowledge of a natural environment which might be exploited for aquaculture, and give management hints on the basis of anthropogenic impact and ecological conditions. A sampling campaign was carried out in 2008: at six stations, benthic fauna, water, and sediment parameters were considered. Statistical analyses were carried out through multivariate procedures (PCA, classification-clustering, SIMPER, RDA, DISTLM, PERMANOVA). Ecological quality was assessed through the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), the multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) and the Benthic Index based on Taxonomic Sufficiency (BITS). Sediment characteristics (percent organic matter, %OM; redox potential discontinuity layer depth, RPDL; particle size composition) and salinity represented contributory influences on lagoon communities. It was possible to distinguish and characterise a confined area, and benthic communities, from a marine-influenced area and its biota. The number of species was quite low when compared with other open Adriatic lagoons. The M-AMBI and BITS classifications gave quite similar results, which seemed consistent with the ecological conditions of the lagoon, that is a distinction in the ecological quality between the seaward and landward stations, with higher ecological quality (EcoQ) at the seaward stations. Given the pressures and the ecological condition of Karavasta, an intensification of aquaculture activities must be considered with caution, since the lagoon seems at significant risk of serious hypereutrophication. The effects of taxonomic resolution on the variance estimates of macrobenthic assemblages were studied at four spatial scales in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon. The assemblages exhibited significant differences at all the investigated scales; however, spatial variability was mainly associated with the smallest and the largest scales. The decrease of taxonomic resolution (from species to family) was not related to a decrease of the overall variability and similar estimates of variance components were obtained using species and family resolution levels. The ordination models derived from species and family abundances were very similar both in terms of location and dispersion effect, while further aggregation to the class level began to alter the observed spatial patterns. In future studies aimed at assessing changes in the lagoon, resources derived from the cost reductions achieved using family level could be employed to plan more frequent surveys and/or to adopt complex spatial sampling designs with a high number of replicates. Benthic fluxes of copper, copper complexing ligands and thiol compounds in the shallow waters of Venice Lagoon (Italy) were determined using benthic chambers and compared to porewater concentrations to confirm their origin. Benthic copper fluxes were small due to small concentration differences between the porewaters and the overlying water, and the equilibrium concentration was the same at both sites, suggesting that the sediments acted to buffer the copper concentration. Thiol fluxes were ∼10 × greater at 50–60 pmol cm−2 h−1, at the two sites. Porewater measurements demonstrated that the sediments were an important source of the thiols to the overlying waters. The overlying waters were found to contain at least two ligands, a strong one, L1 (log K′CuL1 = 14.2) and a weaker one, L2 (log K′CuL2 = 12.5). The concentration of L1 remained relatively constant during the incubation and similar to that of copper, whereas that of L2 was in great excess of copper, its concentration balanced by porewater releases and breakdown, probably due to uptake by microorganisms, similar to that of the thiol compounds. Similarity of the thiol and L2 concentrations and similar complex stability with copper suggest that L2 was dominated by the thiols. Abstract: Total copper (CuT), copper ion activity (pCu) and the copper complexation capacity (CuCC) were determined in samples of seawater collected in July 2003 from the Venice Lagoon. CuT and CuCC showed considerable spatial variability: CuT ranged from 1.8 to 70.0nM, whereas the CuCC varied from 195 to 573nM. pCu values varied from 11.6 to 12.6 and are consistent with those previously reported in estuarine and coastal areas (10.9–14.1). The range of CuT values compares well with those reported in the past in the lagoon and in the adjacent Adriatic Sea. The highest concentrations of CuT were found in samples collected near the industrial area of Porto Marghera, whereas the lowest were measured near the Chioggia and Malamocco inlets, where an intense tidally-driven renewal of seawater takes place. Although CuCC showed a high degree of spatial variability, the values recorded in the Venice Lagoon are comparable to those reported in other estuarine systems. In addition, CuCC was positively correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), suggesting that organic ligands responsible for Cu complexation are part of the bulk organic matter pool in the lagoon. The CuCC:CuT molar ratio was, on average 55:1, indicating that a large excess of complexation capacity exists in the Venice Lagoon. The high levels of CuCC and the narrow range of pCu indicates the importance of the role played by organic ligands in controlling the free ion Cu concentrations in the lagoon, and as a consequence, regulating its availability and/or toxicity. Although benthic macrophytes must be considered in monitoring programs to establish the ecological status of transitional and coastal waters in the European Union, the patterns of variability in species composition of macrophyte assemblages in Mediterranean coastal lagoons has scarcely been studied. In this work the spatial (both vertical and horizontal) and seasonal dynamics of macrophyte assemblages in a coastal lagoon (Mar Menor) are compared with those of open coastal assemblages in the SW Mediterranean to analyze any biological variability in lagoon assemblages and the factors that determine such variability. Different assemblages, characterized by well defined groups of species, can be described according to their isolation from the open sea and the type of substratum; at the same time, a vertical zonation pattern, similar to that found in all marine communities but more compressed, exists. This implies that when applying the EU Water Framework Directive or assessing environmental impact, a lagoon should not be considered spatially uniform and unique unit but as a mosaic of assemblages. In this study, a Lagrangian particle tracking model driven by hydrodynamic fields was used to investigate the changes of flushing properties in Xiaohai Lagoon resulting from natural evolution and influences of human activities. Comparisons of residence times between 1936 and 2001 indicate that the flushing efficiency of the lagoon has deteriorated greatly during the past seven decades. Over this period, the average residence time of the lagoon has increased from 45 to 71days, an increase of 59%. The Lagrangian residual velocity has decreased from 1936 to 2001 in the large portions of the lagoon, and the spatial distribution pattern of the residual current has changed significantly. The well-developed horizontal circulations in 1936 disappeared. Instead, the horizontal Lagrangian residual velocity showed uniformly seaward motion with reduced velocity in 2001. Human activities have incurred great impacts on the deterioration of flushing efficiency. The reduction of river inflow imposed the most significant impact, causing an increase of average residence time by 33%. The land reclamation in the lagoon came as the second most significant factor, causing an increase of 15%. Closure of the North Opening had posed minor impact. The model results suggest that restoring the river inflow, as well as the dredging of the tidal channel and the inner lagoon, should be the top proprieties for future water quality management. The biogeochemistry of Tapong Bay, one of the major lagoons in southern Taiwan, was studied from 1999 to 2004, encompassing a period in 2003 in which aquaculture activities were terminated and the associated structures removed. Removal of the maricultural structures resulted in the reduction of the mean time for water exchange time in Tapong Bay from about 10±2d to 6±2d. The annual mean concentration of measured nutrients (DIN, DIP and DSi) also decreased significantly, likely due to improved water exchange, ceased feeding and increased biological utilization. An overall high primary production was maintained and likely to be constrained by temperature, light availability and turbidity rather than by abundant nutrients throughout the study period. The change in stoichiometric ratios among inorganic and organic nutrients (C/N, Si/N, N/P) may be attributed to the shift of plankton community between the two periods. The annual mean of ΔPOC/ΔPON was 8.1, a little bit larger than that (7.3) before removal, also possibly resulting from the shift of planktonic community (from diatom-dominated to flagellate-dominated and increase of total phytoplankton and zooplankton) and removal of periphyton and oysters. The Tapong Bay shows a 37% increase (from 5.6 to 7.7molCm−2 yr−1) in net ecosystem production (NEP) after structure removal, although the increase was not statistically significant. The change in environmental conditions has therefore influenced profoundly the carbon and nutrient biogeochemical processes and budgets in the semi-enclosed ecosystem. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The new index FINE, a multimetric, fuzzy-based index for the evaluation of environmental quality for Mediterranean transitional waters, was calculated using biotic data gathered between 2000 and 2006 at 15 stations in 4 Tyrrhenian transitional water ecosystems (Orbetello Lagoon, Padrongiano Delta, Stagno di S. Teodoro, and Stagno di Tortolì), i.e. in a different biogeographic sub-province respect to the one in which the index was developed and validated. The rationale of FINE is that certain attributes, selected on the basis of established principles of benthic ecology, are fundamental for lagoon ecosystem function. A set of other indices (Simpson’s 1− λ′, the W-statistics, AMBI, and BOPA) was also calculated and compared to FINE outputs. FINE, 1− λ′, and the W-statistics were significantly correlated with sedimentary organic matter content. Some stations were unequivocally assigned to the same ecological status, independently from the index used; for others, some discrepancies were evident. Mediterranean transitional waters probably share ecosystem complexities which are not yet fully captured by indices developed and validated elsewhere. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The systematic collection of benthic organisms in tidal flats of coastal lagoons should be taken into account for the management of these systems, once sediment disturbance affects biogeochemical processes by favouring pore water renewal during tidal inundation. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effects of infauna harvesting on the phosphorus dynamics of muddy and sandy intertidal areas in the Ria Formosa. Sediment cores and overlying water were collected during August 2000 and February 2001 from reworked and undisturbed sediment before and after flooding. Results obtained showed that during the first minutes of flooding there was a marked decrease of phosphate in pore water of disturbed sediments. However, phosphate tidal fluxes from sandy sediment were clearly higher (17nmolcm−2 d−1 in summer and 3nmolcm−2 d−1 in winter) than in muddy sediment (0.4nmolcm−2 d−1 in summer and −0.01nmolcm−2 d−1 in winter). After muddy sediment disturbance concentrations of iron oxides increased quickly (from 5 to 16μmolg−1) and phosphate was sorbed onto these iron oxides, resulting in a buffering of phosphate pore water concentrations at low values in the oxidized sediment zone. The estimated P-output from muddy sediment decreased one to two orders of magnitude after sediment disturbance in contrast to sandy sediments in which the impact of infauna harvesting was minimal. Consequently, the P-cycle is influenced by the disruption of muddy habitats in tide-driven systems. Such information could be useful for the management of the lagoon. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Coastal lagoons are often characterized by eutrophic conditions which are known to impair the structure and functioning of both pelagic and benthic compartments. However, the manner in which eutrophication triggers a series of cascade effects in the whole food web in coastal lagoons has received little attention. Using stable isotope (SI) analyses, we investigated the food web structure in the hypertrophic lagoon of Yundang (Xiamen, China) in two periods of the year characterized by the recurrent alternation of Ulva lactuca and phytoplankton blooms in the cool (March) and warm (September) seasons, respectively. Large temporal fluctuations in the dominance of primary producers (i.e. macroalgae vs. phytoplankton) and, thus, in the available food items, were reflected in major changes in the diet and SI signals of several primary consumers, such as the amphipod Grandidierella japonica , the polychaetes Neanthes japonica and Capitella capitata , and omnivorous fishes (i.e. Mugil cephalus , Oreochromis niloticus , and Sardinella zunasi), while these changes were limited in top carnivorous fishes, such as Lateolabrax japonicus. Furthermore, reduced macrozoobenthic abundance available for omnivores in September was found to force omnivores to switch their feeding habits to those of herbivores. The present study provides evidence that the periodical alternation of macroalgal and phytoplankton blooms throughout the year strongly affect the relations among different trophic levels leading to a cascading effect across the whole food web and to major changes in the lagoon's food web structure. Importantly, our study shows that the lagoon's food web structure under persistent eutrophic conditions can still cope with seasonal changes in primary energy source type from macroalgae to microalgae due to the ability of omnivorous fishes to conduit different food sources up to the highest trophic levels. Thus, this study suggests that in such a highly variable eutrophic system, omnivores play a central role in the lagoon's functioning, and help to sustain the biological resources and the ecosystem services provided by the lagoon. Environmental changes have been associated with natural climatic variability or human activity. Water resources management is, perhaps, the most drastic change observed in the coastal environment. However, external forcings such as the El Niño event have important implications in the global and regional hydrological balance. These environmental changes have an impact on the density and biomass of the ichthyofauna in the Terminos Lagoon (TL) for the past 30 years, presumably, associated with variations in the temperature and surface salinity of the sea. Therefore, in the present study, δ18O was quantified in otoliths of two important species due to their dominance: Stellifer lanceolatus and Eucinostomus gula , and to understand the environmental changes reflected in both species. The δ18O was analyzed in otoliths of these two species captured in 1998/1997, 2006/2007 and 2016/2017 and were compared with in situ temperature and salinity data. Sea surface temperature and salinity increased by 2 °C and 9, respectively, between 1997 and 2017. Stellifer lanceolatus δ18O values was in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite; while, E. gula is not in isotopic equilibrium. The δ18O of S. lanceolatus and E. gula varied significantly with the increase in salinity (R2 = 0.8987 and R2 = −0.2964) and not with the sea surface temperature. S. lanceolatus is an excellent bioindicator of changes in sea surface salinity in this region of the Gulf of Mexico. • δ18O in Stellifer lanceolatus was in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite. • δ18O in Eucinostomus gula wasn't in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite. • δ18O of both species varied significantly with the increase in salinity. • S. lanceolatus is an excellent bioindicator of changes in salinity. Coastal transitional waters are exposed to many anthropogenic threats. This study aims to assess the trace metals' pollution status of transitional waters by evaluating its biological effects in the clam Venerupis decussata. Among the studied sites along the Tunisian littoral, South Tunis and Boughrara were the most impacted, since clams from these two lagoons presented significant differences in: (i) trace metal contents, (ii) in-cell hydrogen peroxide, (iii) enzymatic and non-enzymatic defenses, (iv) damage to lipids and proteins, and (v) protein post-translational modifications. These changes related to evident histopathological traits. PCA showed a clear separation between the digestive gland and gills tissues and illustrated an impact gradient in Tunisian coastal lagoons. Water temperature was revealed as an added natural stressor that, when concurring with high pollution, may jeopardize an ecosystem's health and contribute to the accumulation of hazardous metals in organisms. Sponges are often important components of coastal lagoons, however their responses to anthropogenic stressors remain poorly understood. Here, we tested the responses of three lagoon sponges, Neopetrosia exigua , Amphimedon navalis and Spheciospongia vagabunda from Mauritius (Western Indian Ocean), to nine temperature and nitrate combinations for 14 days. We found that elevated seawater temperature resulted in significant physiological responses in all species, but there was generally little negative effect of elevated nitrate. At the end of the experiment, the buoyant weight of all three species were significantly reduced, while for the two chlorophyll a -containing species, N. exigua and S. vagabunda, effective quantum yield (ΔF/Fm') of photosystem (PS) II, photosynthetic pigment concentrations, gross photosynthetic rate and gross photosynthesis to respiration (P:R) ratio were also reduced. Dark respiration rates were higher in all three species at elevated temperature. While these lagoon sponges appeared to be impacted by elevated temperature, here, we demonstrate that these species are physiologically tolerant to excess nitrate concentrations. • Lagoon-inhabiting sponges are often exposed to the combined effects of elevated temperature and eutrophication. • The physiological responses of these sponges to these stressors are generally less understood. • Lagoon sponges are more susceptible to elevated temperature compared to excess nitrate concentration. • The physiological responses of lagoon-inhabiting sponges are species-specific. Anthropogenic disturbances may be increasing jellyfish populations globally. Epibenthic jellyfish are ideal organisms for studying this phenomenon due to their sessile lifestyle, broad geographic distribution, and prevalence in near-shore coastal environments. There are few studies, however, that have documented epibenthic jellyfish abundance and measured their impact on ecological processes in tropical ecosystems. In this study, the density and size of the upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea spp.) were measured in Codrington Lagoon, Barbuda. A sediment core incubation study, with and without Cassiopea , also was performed to determine their impact on benthic oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Densities of Cassiopea were 24–168 m−2, among the highest reported values in the literature. Under illuminated conditions, Cassiopea increased oxygen production >300% compared to sediment alone, and they changed sediments from net heterotrophy to net autotrophy. Cassiopea increased benthic ammonium uptake, but reduced nitrate uptake, suggesting they can significantly alter nitrogen cycling. Future studies should quantify the abundance of Cassiopea and measure their impacts on ecosystem processes, in order to further determine how anthropogenic-related changes may be altering the function of tropical coastal ecosystems. Coastal lagoons are among the most productive systems in the world. Many marine species make use of this by entering the lagoons as juveniles for nursery and growth before returning to the sea for reproduction. Humans take advantage of such fish migration processes by fishing, and exploit the high productivity for aquaculture activities. The Mar Menor is one of the largest coastal lagoons in the Mediterranean, sustaining relatively high fishing intensity despite the fact that it has traditionally been characterized as highly oligotrophic. However, in the last decades, this lagoon has suffered drastic changes induced by human activities. This has led to eutrophication, which started mainly as a consequence of changes in agricultural practices in the lagoon watershed, and triggered such fundamental changes in the system, as the mass development of jellyfish. The aim of this work is to capture and analyse the structure and functioning of the trophic web of the Mar Menor when it was still, in contrast to other coastal lagoons, oligotrophic, to provide a start point for analysing the consequences of changes in the distribution of macrophyte meadows and of eutrophication. We have compiled a detailed trophic model of this lagoon, comprising 94 compartments, using an ECOPATH model to capture the period 1980–1995. At this time the lagoon was an autotrophic system with a high net surplus of production that reached 9124.31gC/m2/year, while the production/biomass (P/B) ratio reached 34.56 and the total primary production/total respiration ratio was 7.01. The lagoon exported a 38.46% of total flows, including the catch by fishing, and 44.40% went to detritus. The primary production was mainly benthic (99.4%) due to the microphytobenthos and macrophytes. However, despite the fact that total fishery landings in the study period ranged between 144,835.5 and 346,708.5 kg, the gross efficiency was low, making up only 0.005% of the net primary production. This could partly be explained by the high trophic level of the fish catch (2.9), but mainly because most of the primary production (10,532.06 gC/m2/year) went directly to the detritus pool and was accumulated in the sediment in the Caulerpa prolifera meadows. We suggest several reasons why such high productivity coincided with low chlorophyll concentrations and good overall water quality: 1) the domination of both benthic biomass and primary production over pelagic ones with a high biomass of filter feeders, detritus feeders and scavengers, 2) high species diversity, complex and long food webs characterized by low connectance,3) the export of a significant part of the production from the system, and 4) the accumulation of surplus organic matter (as detritus) in sediments. We compare the food web of the Mar Menor in this mentioned oligotrophic stage to those of ten other lagoons in pursuit of more general implications regarding lagoon ecosystem functioning. Until recently, jellyfish have been ignored as an important source of food, due to their low nutritional value. Here, quantitative PCR was used to detect and quantify the DNA of the jellyfish Aurelia coerulea in the gut contents of commercially important fish species from the Thau Lagoon. Individuals from five fish species were collected during two different periods: the bloom period, when the pelagic stages of A. coerulea are abundant, and the post-bloom period, when only the benthic stage – polyps – is present in the lagoon. The DNA of A. coerulea was detected in the guts of 41.9% of the fish analysed, belonging to four different species. The eel Anguilla anguilla and the seabream Sparus aurata were important jellyfish consumers during the bloom and post-bloom periods, respectively. To investigate dispersal and connectivity between spawning and lagoon nursery habitats of the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata , in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea), we modeled the potential transport of the species' larvae between its supposed main spawning site in the region (the Planier Island) and two of its main local nursery areas (the coastal lagoons of Thau and Salses-Leucate). Passive larval drift simulations using a dispersal biophysical model showed a large variability in the possible trajectories from spawning to nursery areas and in the predicted ages for larvae arrival on the two nursery sites. The most common ages at arrival obtained in the simulations (20–60 days) are broadly consistent with previous modeling studies but contrast with the actual ages of the S. aurata post-larvae collected in 2016 and 2017 at time of the lagoon entrances (60–90 days, from otolith readings). The period between 25 and 70 days being critical for gilthead seabream larvae to acquire sufficient swimming, osmoregulatory, and olfactory abilities to enter coastal lagoons, we argue that ontogenic development plays a crucial role in the transport and local retention of S. aurata larvae in the studied region, explaining the discrepancy between simulation results and observed data. • We simulated dispersal and connectivity of the gilthead seabream in the Gulf of Lions. • We estimated ages of larvae collected at the lagoon entrances from otolith readings. • The most common ages at lagoon arrival obtained in the simulations are 20–60 days. • The actual ages of collected larvae at time of the lagoon entrances are 60–90 days. • Ontogenic development of seabream larvae likely explains this discrepancy.
