The article presents a study which examines the growth and survival of capelin larvae or Mallotus villosus in Iceland. It states that the capelin larvae were sampled on the continental shelf surrounding Iceland from August 8 to September 3, 2001, and from August 7 to August 25, 2002, during the Icelandic Marine Research Institute's yearly larval fish survey. The study uses various methods including the Simrad EK500 38 kHZ transducer to gather acoustic data and the acoustic echograms to identify changes in the larvae densities. Moreover, the study's result shows that the somatic growth was faster in 2001 and the 2001 year-class' daily otolith growth was faster in the 21 to 50 days age range, and that environmental factors affect the seasonal growth.
