Vayssierea is an understudied nudibranch genus characterized by its orange colouration and small size (up to 5 mm in length). To date, there are four described species, distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Here, individuals of Vayssierea were recorded for the first time in the North Atlantic Ocean on the Canary Islands (Spain). This study aims to evaluate the systematic and taxonomic status and distribution of the genus through multilocus phylogenetic, morphological, and radular analyses. Phylogenetic results show the monophyly of Vayssierea and evidence indicating that the genus is included in the new subfamily Okadaiinae stat. nov. within Polyceridae. According to species delimitation tests, four different species have been sequenced from Russia to Australia, in addition to our new records in the Atlantic Ocean, but more information is needed to identify the species. Nevertheless, our specimens from the Canary Islands belong to two different species, one of which is identical to the Australian species. Bearing in mind that they lack a planktonic larval stage; we hypothesize that they arrived by shipping transportation or aquarium releases, becoming a non-indigenous species of the Atlantic Ocean. Bathydoris hodgsoni and Doris kerguelenensis are two of the largest Antarctic nudibranchs. They are both common circumpolar species with broad bathymetric distributions, although B. hodgsoni is restricted to deep waters in the Antarctic high latitude. Egg masses and juveniles of these species were collected over multiple years (1998-2012) in the eastern Weddell Sea and the South Shetland Islands, and here new data are provided about egg mass characteristics and ontogeny using histological techniques. The egg mass of B. hodgsoni has a maximum length of 12.4 cm with one or two egg capsules with a mean diameter of 4.9 cm. The capsules either contained non-developing eggs or ready-to-hatch juveniles up to 2.9 cm long. The egg mass of D. kerguelenensis is a semicircular ribbon-like structure including 1,500-2,400 oval capsules (~1.7 × 1.2 mm) containing various stages of development up to ready-to-hatch juveniles 2.5 mm in length. Based on their morphology and development in egg masses maintained in the laboratory, the embryonic period for B. hodgsoni is estimated to be up to 10 years, and for D. kerguelenensis 13 months. Thus, B. hodgsoni has the largest egg capsules and probably the largest hatchlings of any mollusc. Chemical analyses of D. kerguelenensis egg masses showed no trace of terpenoid acylglycerols, although these compounds were present in field-collected juveniles and adults. Several sacoglossan sea slugs utilise chloroplasts ingested from algae for photosynthesis (kleptoplasty), a unique trophic strategy unknown in other animals. Its adaptive significance, especially the behavioural adaptations involved in this phenomenon, has not been fully explored. To address this issue, the effects of kleptoplasty on phototaxis were investigated, both across and within species, using sacoglossans collected along Japanese coasts in 2012 and 2013. First, the presence of phototaxis and preferred light intensity was studied in five sacoglossans with various photosynthetic capabilities using an I-maze with a light gradient (4-330 μmol photons m s). Each individual was allowed to move for 30 min to choose the optimal light intensity. Elysia hamatanii, E. trisinuata, and Plakobranchus ocellatus, all with high photosynthetic activity (i.e. kleptoplastic), showed positive phototaxis. Among them, E. hamatanii preferred the highest light intensity followed by P. ocellatus and E. trisinuata, and the order corresponded with the shallowness of their habitats. Conversely, Stiliger ornatus and Placida sp., with virtually no photosynthetic activity (non-kleptoplastic), showed neutral and negative phototaxis, respectively. Next, the phototaxis of E. hamatanii individuals with (fed) and without (starved) functional chloroplasts was compared to examine the effects of the presence of kleptoplasts on phototaxis within a species. Both fed and starved individuals showed positive phototaxis, but the preferred light intensity of starved individuals was lower than that of fed individuals. These results suggest that sacoglossans with functional chloroplasts exhibit positive phototaxis towards a preferred light intensity which may benefit photosynthesis efficiency. The identity of food sources and feeding preferences of specialist herbivores have been commonly inferred from spatial associations between consumer and food items. However, such basic information for well-known marine herbivores, sacoglossans (sea slugs), and their algal diets remains disappointingly lacking, especially from field studies. The sacoglossan, Elysia clarki (Pierce et al. in Molluscan Res 26:23-38, ), is kleptoplastic and sequesters chloroplasts from algal food to photosynthesize, so DNA identification of sequestered chloroplasts was employed to verify the algal species fed upon by the slug across its geographic range. The molecular information on the algae consumed by E. clarki was combined with field surveys of slugs and algae in slug habitats in the Florida Keys in July and August of 2008 in order to evaluate whether the diet of this herbivore could be predicted based on its spatial association with algae in the field. A considerable mismatch between food availability and kleptoplast identity was recorded. E. clarki commonly occupied areas devoid of potential food and often contained symbiotic plastids from algal species different from those most frequently found in the surveyed habitats. In three of the four study sites, algal species present were poor predictors of slug diet. These findings suggest that the photosynthetic capability of E. clarki may release the slug from the constraint of requiring proximity to its food sources and may allow for the potential lack of spatial coupling between this herbivore and its algal food. Sacoglossans use chloroplasts taken from algal food for photosynthesis (kleptoplasty), but the adaptive significance of this phenomenon remains unclear. Two con-generic sacoglossans ( Elysia trisinuata and E. atroviridis) were collected in 2009-2011 from Shirahama (33.69°N, 135.34°E) and Mukaishima (34.37°N, 133.22°E), Japan, respectively. They were individually maintained for 16 days under four experimental conditions (combination of light/dark and with/without food), and their survival rate and relative (=final/initial) weights were measured. Both light and food had positive effects on the survival in E. trisinuata, whereas no positive effects of light or food on survival were detected in E. atroviridis. Both light and food had positive effects on relative weights in both species, but light had smaller effects than food. A significant interaction term between light and food was detected in E. trisinuata (but not in E. atroviridis) in that only the presence of both resulted in weight gains. This result suggests that E. trisinuata can obtain sufficient additional energy from photosynthesis for sustaining growth when fresh chloroplasts are continuously supplied from algal food. In addition, fluorescence yield measurements showed that unfed individuals of both E. trisinuata and E. atroviridis lost photosynthetic activity soon (<4 and 4-8 days, respectively). In conclusion, photosynthesis may function to obtain supplementary nutrition for sustaining growth when food is available in sacoglossans with short-term functional kleptoplasty. Pelagic species have been traditionally thought to occupy vast, genetically interconnected, geographic ranges in an essentially homogeneous environment. Although this view has been challenged recently for some mesopelagic planktonic taxa, the population structure of hyponeustonic (surface-drifting) species remains unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis of panmixis in Glaucus atlanticus, a cosmopolitan neustonic nudibranch, by assessing the genetic differentiation of multiple representatives from a global neustonic sampling effort. Specimens were collected from all subtropical oceanic gyre systems (North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean). We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene for 98 individuals and performed population structure, differentiation (analysis of molecular variance, spatial analysis of molecular variance, F, Jost's D), and molecular clock analyses. Our results indicate that G. atlanticus is not globally panmictic, but that populations appear to be panmictic within ocean basins. We detected several topologically ectopic haplotypes in the Atlantic Ocean, but the molecular clock analysis indicates that these have diverged from closely related Indo-Pacific haplotypes over 1.2 MYA, coinciding with cooling in waters around in the southern tip of Africa and resulting oceanographic changes. These data and the fact that G. atlanticus is not known from polar latitudes suggest that gene flow between ocean basins is hindered by physical barriers (supercontinents) and water temperatures in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. Felimare californiensis (= Hypselodoris californiensis) was once common throughout the Southern California Bight (SCB) and California Channel Islands. This well-known shallow-water nudibranch, which specializes on dysideid sponges, has persisted for decades in Mexico, but in California disappeared from its entire range by 1984. Since reappearing in 2003, it has been found only at Santa Catalina Island, plus sightings of single individuals in 2011 at Santa Cruz Island and San Diego. The decline of F. californiensis in California was documented using published historical records, museum collections, unpublished field accounts, and images posted online. The loss of this emblematic species is unique among Californian nudibranchs, including (1) its congener Felimare porterae (= Mexichromis porterae), with which it appears to overlap in diet, and (2) opisthobranch species with similar historical geographic ranges and mode of development. The decline in F. californiensis is not predicted by warming trends and climate variation over the past 40 years, including the strong El Niño events of 1983 and 1998. Coastal pollution from the large human population in southern California may have impacted Dysidea amblia, the primary reported prey of F. californiensis. Historical overcollecting of the nudibranch and habitat loss through the development of major ports likely also contributed to its decline. In 1977, Phidiana hiltoni (O'Donoghue in J. Entomol Zool (Pomona College, Claremont, California) 19:77-119, ) began spreading northward from Monterey, California. By 1992, it had reached Duxbury Reef (37° 53′ 23″ N, 122° 41′ 59″ W), 100 km to the north, where other nudibranchs subsequently appeared to decline. The role of P. hiltoni in this decline was investigated through diet analysis, feeding trials, and comparison of historical and recent abundance data. In the wild, P. hiltoni preyed largely on hydroids, but also showed evidence of predation on nudibranchs. In the laboratory, P. hiltoni attacked most of the dendronotid and aeolid nudibranchs presented to it, ingesting small individuals whole. The pooled abundance of nudibranchs vulnerable to attack by P. hiltoni declined an average of two-thirds at Duxbury Reef since its arrival, compared to (1) no change in the non-vulnerable species and (2) no change in either group at two other sites where P. hiltoni was one to two orders of magnitude less abundant. Phidiana hiltoni therefore appears to have caused this decline, likely through a combination of direct predation and competition for prey. A brief larval period, combined with cyclonic re-circulation in the lee of Point Reyes, may be driving self-recruitment of P. hiltoni at Duxbury Reef, as well as hindering further northward spread. Nudibranchs (Mollusca, Gastropoda) feeding on tentacles and polyps of Cnidaria thereby ingest both latent and discharged nematocysts (NCs) along with the food mass. In eolid nudibranchs (Opisthobranchia, Aeolidacea), many of the undischarged NCs are transported to terminal cnidosacs in their body appendages (cerata) and incorporated as kleptocnidae for defense. In the present report, the occurrence and fate of NCs in the digestive tracts of eolids is compared with hydrozoan-feeding dendronotacean nudibranchs (Opisthobranchia, Dendronotacea), which may show more basic stages in the evolution of cnidosacs. Tomographic reconstructions of the distal tips of cerata were composed from series of semithin light microscopic sections, utilizing 3D-surface rendering software. Doto acuta (Dendronotacea, Dotidae) does not have cnidosacs; transmission electron micrographs show that the NCs are digested in lysosomes of digestive gland cells. In contrast, species of the genus Hancockia (Dendronotacea, Hancockiidae) have several small cnidosacs in each ceras; they accumulate NCs in the digestive cells, as well as in the cnidosacs. Many of the cnidosacs were found open to the exterior with NCs in the process of expulsion. These and other structural details suggest assigning a function of expelling the NCs to the Hancockia spp. cnidosacs. It is proposed that cnidosacs similar to those of Hancockia spp. provide a clue to understanding how the defensive function of eolid cnidosacs may have evolved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Offspring size can have pervasive effects throughout the life history stages of many marine invertebrates. Although maternal offspring investment is largely determined by the environmental conditions experienced by the mother, egg size might additionally vary in response to the number and quality of previous mating partners. Positive effects of mating multiply with several different males (polyandry) have been confirmed for a variety of species, whereas such investigations are lacking for marine invertebrates. Here we differentiated between the effects of ejaculate amount (repeatedly mated) and ejaculate diversity (polyandry) on maternal offspring investment in the simultaneously hermaphroditic sea slug Chelidonura sandrana. We found that focal “females” mated with four different “males” produced significantly larger egg capsules and larger veligers, while focal “females” mated four times with the same “male” suffered from reduced mid-term fecundity. We found no effect of veliger size on veliger survival. Our results show that female mating patterns are an important addition to understanding the variation in offspring size in internally fertilizing marine invertebrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skin and stomach epithelia of the four suborders of nudibranch gastropods (Mollusca, Opisthobranchia) are characterized by large intracellular ovoid disks, here called spindles. These spindles are an evolutionary novelty in the nudibranchs; in shell-less sacoglossan species they are missing. We here examined whether the distribution and occurrence of the spindles is consistent with the assumption of a protective role against discharging nematocysts of co-habiting and prey Cnidaria. Spindles were abundant in epidermal cells of regions exposed to nematocysts, such as the cerata, the lips, the edges of lamellate rhinophores, the surfaces of non-retractile gill-like organs, as well as in the stomach epithelium of eolid and dendronotacean species which feed on Cnidaria. While cells packed with spindles almost exclusively formed the epidermis of eolid and arminacean species, they were less numerous in the skin of dendronotacean and dorid species, where glandular cells predominated. The preponderance of either glandular or spindle cells suggests a dual complementary defense strategy, on the one side the production of mucus coats and aversive glandular secretions, on the other structural defensive devices that are cushion-like entities filled with inert grains. The adult, sacoglossan sea slug, Elysia clarki (Pierce et al. in Molluscan Res 26, ), sequesters functional chloroplasts in cells of the digestive diverticula from four species of macroalgae in the order Bryopsidales ( Penicillus capitatus, Penicillus lamourouxii, Halimeda incrassata, and Halimeda monile). Feeding experiments were conducted in December, 2003, using individuals raised in the laboratory from egg masses laid by E. clarki adults which had been collected from Grassy Key, Florida, USA, and 29 species of macroalgae collected from the Florida Keys, Tampa Bay, Tarpon Springs, Florida, or Woods Hole, Massachusetts or obtained from the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas . For the first 14-day post-metamorphosis, juveniles ate only the thin filamentous species, Bryopsis plumosa or Derbesia tenuissima. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the chloroplasts from both algae were sequestered intracellularly in juvenile slugs. Individuals offered any other macroalga, including the four species fed on by adults, did not feed on or incorporate any chloroplasts, and soon died. Juveniles switched from B. plumosa to P. capitatus at a length of ∼ 1.0 cm, and fixed for microscopy 14 days later had intact intracellular chloroplasts from both algae. Nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast gene, rbcL, from DNA extracted from E. clarki, collected from Vaca Key, Florida, were aligned with 22 other available macroalgal rbcL sequences indicating that these E. clarki adults had fed on three species of algae in the Bryopsidales including Bryopsis pennata, and TEM results partially confirmed this conclusion. Aeolid nudibranchs maintain functional nematocysts, which are sequestered from the nudibranchs' cnidarian prey and provide protection against predators. Some species exhibit extensive variation in incorporated nematocysts, while others maintain a limited number of types. This study examines the apparent diversity in uptake and patterns of nematocyst incorporation among related species. Nematocyst complements were described for four Gulf of Maine nudibranch species in the genus Flabellina exhibiting a variety of feeding strategies and prey specificities. Diet manipulations were performed to examine the response to changing nematocyst availability using a generalist consumer, Flabellina verrucosa, to assess nematocyst uptake based on diet. The flabellinid species examined exhibited significant differences in nematocyst incorporation, reflecting differences in their specificity as predators and nematocyst types available in their natural prey. The nematocyst complement of F. verrucosa was the most variable and differed among collection regions. When diet was manipulated, nematocyst uptake depended on the prey the nudibranchs consumed, but when offered a variety of prey, F. verrucosa selectively preferred nematocysts from scyphistomae. Trophic specializations are widespread among opisthobranch molluscs. One purported example from the Mediterranean Sea is the dotted sea slug Peltodoris atromaculata. It has been hypothesized that this species is strongly monophagous on the sponge Petrosia ficiformis. However, the small amount of evidence that has been found for this hypothesis is based just on laboratory tests. Here we study the feeding habits and the diet of Peltodoris atromaculata in its natural habitat. We observed and videotaped 161 individuals together with the organisms on which they were found (their living substrata). Feeding scars were identified and videotaped as well. Individuals and their living substrata were sampled for further analysis in the laboratory. The composition of faeces of Peltodoris, especially undigested sponge spicules, was analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy and compared to the composition of the living substrata. Most of the faecal samples consisted of undigested sponge spicules. Although Peltodoris was found on 11 species of sponges, only 2 of them, Petrosia spp. and Haliclona fulva, form its diet (76% out of n=121 samples). In accordance with this, feeding scars in the habitats were exclusively observed on these two sponges. Estimation of electivity indices suggests that Haliclona is preferred over Petrosia. One remarkable feature of the exclusive feeding of Peltodoris on Petrosia and Haliclona is that both sponges share specific fulvinol-like polyacetylenes that show cytotoxic activity in bioassays. Potential benefits and evolutionary aspects of this trophic specialization are discussed. Besides sponge-containing faeces, we found spicule-free faeces (24%, n= 29). These were very small in volume compared to sponge-containing faeces, and only few distinct structures were present. However, the use of food other than sponges is not necessarily indicated by this, because the spicule-free faeces might also represent left-overs from the stomach and digestive gland after sponge spicules have been released. Previous studies of the genetic structure of populations of two intertidal nudibranchs, Goniodoris nodosa (Montagu) and Adalaria proxima (Alder and Hancock), using polymorphic allozymes revealed an expected congruence between the larval strategies of the two species and spatial differences in allele frequencies. In the northern British Isles, allele frequencies for the planktotrophic species, G. nodosa, lacked significant spatial heterogeneity over distances of >1000 km, while there was significant spatial heterogeneity in allele frequencies over distances of as little as 100 m between populations of the lecithotrophic species, A. proxima. To further understand the mechanisms causing these differences in population structure, allele frequencies were monitored in populations of both species over up to ten annual generations from 1985–1995 (for as many as seven consecutive generations in some cases). The temporal studies corroborated the spatial studies, showing that the population structure for these species is closely related to their realized larval dispersal. Between 1992 and 1995 the scale of larval dispersal and recruitment of A. proxima was examined in the field in three one-way transplant experiments between pairs of populations that were genetically and/or phenotypically different. Two of the three transplant experiments resulted in significant changes either in allozyme allele frequencies at multiple loci, or in the frequency of a color morph between two consecutive generations. This suggests that small, local populations are not totally open demographically and receive at least a proportion of their recruits from larvae generated within that population. The influence of local extinction and chance recolonization by larvae dispersed from more distant populations is therefore likely to be great, and these stochastic processes may affect the evolution of characters such as the previously observed egg size variation among populations of A. proxima. The nudibranch Tritonia plebeia (Johnston) was first observed in New England in 1983, on vertical rock walls at 7 m depth off Nahant, Massachusetts. This northern European species preys exclusively on the soft coral Alcyonium digitatum (Linneaus) in its natural habitat. At Nahant, it preyed primarily on the closely related Alcyonium siderium Verrill. Laboratory studies indicated that it could locate its prey by distance chemoreception and by visual orientation towards tall dark surfaces which could help it find the vertical walls, overhangs, and boulder sides where the soft corals occur. Field studies showed that T. plebeia fed primarily on colony bases, causing extensive damage and whole colony mortality. The most important endemic predator on A. siderium, Coryphella verrucosa (Sars), preyed preferentially on hydroids, but would graze polyps off the top portions of A. sederium colonies, causing little permanent damage to the colony, during the winter months when hydroids were scarce. Although C. verrucosa occasionally behaved agonistically toward T. plebeia, there was no indication in laboratory or field studies that either nudibranch had an effect on the other's foraging through interference competition. Extensive predation by T. plebeia caused the disappearance of A. siderium at two sites (Outer and Inner Shag Rocks) and a sharp reduction at a third site (Inner East Point). The higher mortalities at the Shag Rocks sites most likely occurred because of a simultaneous urchin ( Strogylocentrotus droebachiensis) population expansion. As space among aggregates of A. siderium opened up due to T. plebeia predation, urchins were able to forage on the vertical walls and scrape off remaining colonies. At a fourth site, Halfway Rock, where T. plebeia were seldom present, A. siderium colonies also suffered high mortalities. This increae in mortality began nearly a year before urchin populations increased, and during a summer of abnormally high water temperatures at Halfway Rock. The high temperatures, followed by urchin predation on remaining colonies could account for the disappearance of all A. siderium colonies at this site. T. plebeia disappeared at all sites by summer 1986 and A. siderium populations have since stabilized, but community-level changes at all sites where A. siderium were removed have persisted. Mantle surfaces of the dorid nudibranchs Rostanga arbutus and Jorunna sp. were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and two specialized structures are described. These are caryophyllidia and mantle rim organs; the latter being described for the first time. Caryophyllidia occur in large numbers (several thousand) uniformly distributed over the entire upper surface, while the mantle rim organs, numbering only 40 to 60, are restricted to the upper mantle margin. Caryophyllidia are minute (40 to 50 μm diam), erect tubercles supported internally by 4 to 7, vertical, calcareous spicules which emerge in a crown surrounding an apical knob. Caryophyllidia display a high level of spicular organization and incorporate a complex muscle system at their base. The apical knob is formed from specialized epidermis capping a sub-epithelial ganglion. The highly organized structure of the caryophyllidium indicates its potential importance as a new character in dorid taxonomy and phylogeny. Specimens of 21 species of dorid nudibranchs were collected off Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in 1984, and extracts were assayed against a variety of test organisms (bacteria, fungi, crustacean nauplii, a fish and a mammal). Antimicrobial activity was present in extracts of 80% of the 21 species assayed and in each of the five families investigated (Chromodorididae, Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae, Dorididae, and Dendrodorididae). This result adds the families Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae and Dendrodorididae to those with species known to possess such activity. Extracts of 18 of the 21 species possessed ichthyotoxins. Functional kleptoplasty in sacoglossan sea slugs is among the most curious photosynthetic associations known. One member of these marine molluscs, Elysia viridis, is known to incorporate plastids from a variety of different algae food sources, but with apparently different outcomes and differences in the time span of the retention of functional kleptoplasts. While it was previously shown that kleptoplasts that stem from Codium tomentosum are kept functional for several weeks (long-term retention, LtR), those that stem from Bryopsis hypnoides or Cladophora rupestris are thought to be of limited use regarding photosynthetic capacity (short-term retention, StR). This is important, because it touches upon the popular yet controversial question of how important photosynthesis is for the thriving of these slugs. The aim of the present study was to determine to what degree the plastid source determines retention time. We, therefore, compared E. viridis feeding on either Cladophora sp. or B. hypnoides. We show that kleptoplasts of B. hypnoides incorporate 14CO2, but with rapidly declining efficiency throughout the first week of starvation, while the plastids of Cladophora sp. are, surprisingly, not incorporated to begin with. The radulae of the different samples showed adjustment to the food source, and when feeding on Cladophora sp., E. viridis survived under laboratory conditions under both starvation and non-starvation conditions. Our results demonstrate that (i) the ability to incorporate plastids by E. viridis differs between the food sources B. hypnoides and Cladophora sp., and (ii) photosynthetic active kleptoplasts are not an inevitable requirement for survival.
