The present study provides the longest and most intensive plankton and larval fish seasonal variability analysis in the Canary Islands and forms a basis for understanding life cycle scheduling and interactions among species, as well as the potential variability in transport processes of early life stages. Larval fish assemblages were studied weekly at Gran Canaria Island, Canary Islands, from January 2005 to June 2007, which represented two contrasting hydrological and biological periods. The former year was characterized by lower temperature and salinity that increased through 2006 and 2007. In contrast, chlorophyll concentration and mesozooplankton biomass decreased through the same period, especially when only the late winter bloom period was evaluated. However, ichthyoplankton abundance did not exhibit any clear pattern, as larger values were observed during 2006. The larval fish community of this oceanic island, located near the NW African upwelling, was composed of both neritic and oceanic taxa. Two families accounted for almost half of the collected larvae: Clupeidae (21.9%) and Myctophidae (20.5%). Although total larval concentration did not exhibit any seasonal peak linked to changes in zooplankton, the ichthyoplankton composition gradually changed during the year due to the high diversity and extended spawning periods of the fish species represented in samples. “Winter” and “summer” larval assemblages were identified, corresponding to the mixing and stratification periods of the water column, respectively. These assemblages were characterized by changes in the contribution of the most abundant annual taxa (Sardinella aurita,Cyclothone braueri, Ceratoscopelus spp. and Gobids) and by the presence of larvae of winter (Pagellus bogaraveo, Pomacentridae sp1) or summer spawners (Pomacentridae sp2, Trachinus draco, Arnoglossus thori, Tetraodontidae sp1). Upwelling filaments shed from the NW African coast reached the sampling area three times during this study, but changes in the local larval community were only detected in August 2005.

Prey selection was investigated in wild, resident common bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, during the summer months in Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA. Stomach content analyses of 15 dolphins with extensive sighting histories and well-documented distributions were used to determine prey use. Prey availability was assessed by purse seine surveys. We compared the relative abundances of prey available to estimates of prey use at closely matching spatial and temporal scales. G-tests determined that dolphins in this study significantly selected for prey at the species, family, and soniferous/non-soniferous prey levels (G adj = 753.98–1,775.93, df = 1–21, p ≤ 0.01). While comprising only 6.3% of the total available prey, soniferous fishes accounted for 51.9% of the total prey consumed. Manly’s standardized forage ratios and 95% Bonferroni confidence intervals determined significant positive selection for soniferous prey and against non-soniferous prey (βS = 0.9461 vs. βNS = 0.0539). Dolphins selected against Gerridae, Clupeidae, and Sparidae (β ≤ 0.0014), as well as against all the species within those families (β ≤ 0.0190). It is likely that passive listening for soniferous prey provides an ecological or energetic advantage to cetaceans utilizing this specific foraging technique.

Among pelagic fish, the Southwestern Atlantic menhaden genus Brevoortia (Clupeidae, Alosinae) constitutes an important species model to investigate the patterns of genetic differentiation. It is abundant in the Rio de la Plata estuary and in the Atlantic coastal lagoons system from Uruguay and Southern Brazil. To access in the taxa discrimination and population structure in Brevoortia we perform a phylogeographic approach based on mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt-b) sequences including 240 individuals from 16 collecting sites. Among the 720 bp cyt-b sequenced, 199 correspond to variables and 88 to phylogenetically informative sites. High values of haplotype diversity (h = 1.000) and nucleotide diversity (π = 0.061), as well as an average of 0.084 polymorphic segregating sites and 46 different haplotypes were found. Maximum likelihood analysis based on the GTR + I + G model and Bayesian inference strongly support the idea that B. aurea is the only species of the genus inhabiting the Southwestern Atlantic region. Our analyses revealed a complex population pattern characterized by the existence of long-term highly structured genetic assemblages of mixed stocks. Each monophyletic entity included individuals from different collecting sites, different age groups and collected in different years. Our data also suggest that the recruitment of unrelated mtDNA haplotypes carried out by individuals within schools could be occurring in the same nursery areas revealing the existence of many different maternal lineages. A scenario where different simultaneously and successively mixed mtDNA lineages remain historically connected through basal haplotypes among different clades could explains more accurately the complex and ordered metapopulation dynamic found in this pelagic fish.

Using previously published histological data on multiple, monthly samples of Sardina pilchardus collected in the central Aegean and Ionian Seas (September 1999–August 2000, and November 2000–February 2001), the Mediterranean sardine was treated as a case study to investigate the biological characteristics of ephemeral spawning aggregations in multiple-spawning clupeoids. Actively spawning (Day0) females in the Mediterranean sardine, i.e., the daily class of spawners caught a few hours prior, during, or after the spawning act, were shown to separate spatially from late (Day1+) spawners and non-spawning females, taking with them a large proportion of conspecific males which were also in advanced spawning condition and in better somatic condition compared to the remaining population. In addition, information from 28 stocks of multiple-spawning clupeoids from a wide range of geographic locations, belonging to 14 species and 2 families (Engraulidae and Clupeidae), was reviewed and analyzed pertinent to the formation of ephemeral spawning aggregations. Results from the latter analysis indicated similar patterns of spatial segregation of Day0 spawners in the reviewed clupeoid stocks as in the Mediterranean Sardine, which strongly suggested that the formation of ephemeral spawning aggregations is a common behavioral trait among multiple-spawning clupeoids.

This study aims at describing the diversity and composition of larval and juvenile fish assemblages in coastal areas of New Caledonia, southwest Pacific, and identifying the environmental factors that influence the seasonal and spatial patterns of these assemblages. A total of 97 taxa belonging to 7 orders and 26 familis were captured in three bays near Noumea by light trapping every month between January 2002 and June 2003. The assemblages were dominated by Clupeiform larvae and juveniles (96.4% of total abundance) and followed by Perciform larvae (3%). The number of taxa per sample varied from less than five in July-August to more than ten in October-November and abundances followed the same seasonal pattern. Analyses of similarity showed significant differences in the assemblages caught in the three bays and analyses of contribution to the dissimilarity revealed that these differences were due to the most abundant families. The constant part of the relationship between environmental variables and the composition of assemblages was assessed by the partial triadic analysis STATICO, a statistical approach that takes into account the strong seasonality of the data. Rainfall, wind direction and thermal stratification of the water column were found to play a major role in the structure of the assemblages, although tidal amplitude and wind speed became important when Clupeidae and Engraulididae were excluded from the analyses. The richness, relative abundances and seasonal variations of the assemblages caught in three bays under study are close to what has been observed elsewhere in the tropics. This study shows the efficiency of the STATICO analysis for identifying the environmental factors that have a permanent effect on assemblages and sorting them out from those which act temporally or on specific locations. The high abundances and diversity of coral-reef fish larvae observed in coastal zones of New Caledonia suggest that further studies are needed to fully explore the role of the coastal zones of New Caledonia as nurseries.

Few time series collections have been made of the larval ichthyofauna in waters directly above shallow coral reefs. As a result, relatively little is known regarding the composition and temporal dynamics of larval fish assemblages in shallow-reef waters, particularly those near a major western boundary current. We conducted a series of nightly net tows from a small boat over a shallow reef (Pickles Reef) along the upper Florida Keys during four new moon and three third-quarter moon periods in July (two new moons), August, and September 2000. Replicate tows were made after sunset at 0–1 m and at 4–5 m depth to measure the nightly progression in community composition, differences in depth of occurrence, and abundance and diversity with lunar phase. A total of 66 families was collected over the 3-month period, with a mean (±SE) nightly density of 23.7±2.1 larvae per 100 m3 and diversity of 24.2±0.9 taxa per tow. A total of 28.8% of the catch was composed of small, schooling fishes in the families Atherinidae, Clupeidae, and Engraulidae. Of the remaining catch, the top ten most abundant families included reef fishes as well as mangrove and oceanic taxa (in descending order): Scaridae, Blennioidei (suborder), Gobiidae, Paralichthyidae, Lutjanidae, Haemulidae, Labridae, Gerreidae (mangrove), Balistidae, and Scombridae (oceanic). These near-reef larval fish assemblages differed substantially from those collected during previous offshore collections. Taxa such as the Haemulidae were collected at a range of sizes and may remain nearshore throughout their larval period. Overall, the abundance and diversity of taxa did not differ with depth (although within-night vertical migration was evident) or with lunar phase. Temporal patterns of abundance of larval fish families clustered into distinct groups that in several cases paralleled family life-history patterns. In late July, a sharp shift in larval assemblages signaled the replacement of oceanic water with inner shelf/bay water. In general, the suite and relative abundance of taxa collected each night differed from those collected on other nights, and assemblages reflected distinct nightly events as opposed to constant or cyclical patterns. Proximity to the Florida Current likely contributes to the dynamic nature of these near-reef larval assemblages. Our results emphasize the uniqueness of near-reef larval fish assemblages and point to the need for further examination of the biophysical relationships generating event-related temporal patterns in these assemblages.

The postovulatory follicle method was used to assess the frequency of spawning of sardine (Sardina pilchardus sardina) in the Central Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean) in November–December 1999 and 2000. A field-based aging key for postovulatory follicles (POFs) was developed, and preliminary evidence is presented of a temperature influence on the degeneration of POFs. Bias in the fraction of day-0 spawners (females that had, were, or would spawn the night of sampling) with respect to sampling time was identified and attributed to spawning behavior. An appraisal of consistency in spawners' fractions and sex ratio, based on four sets of sequential trawl hauls, showed a considerably high small-scale variability, which suggested that spawning schools are structures limited in space and/or ephemeral in time. Sampling gear, i.e. commercial purse seines and research pelagic trawls, did not differ significantly with respect to spawners' fractions. The fractions of day-1 and day-2 females were the same during both years, and their combination resulted in more precise, composite estimates of spawning frequency. In both years, the Mediterranean sardine spawned every 11–12 days. The incidence of spawning increased significantly with fish size. When compared to all estimates available for other sardine genera, species and subspecies, the spawning frequency of the Mediterranean sardine was lower; this was attributed to the synergetic effect of oligotrophy and smaller body sizes in the Mediterranean.

This article describes the life-history strategy of the blue sprat Spratelloides robustus in South Australia and compares the demographic traits observed with those of other clupeoids. Validation studies that involved marking the sagittae of captive fish with oxy-tetracycline suggested that growth increments are deposited daily. The oldest fish examined was 82 mm caudal fork length and 241 days old, which suggests S. robustus may live for less than 1 year. Growth rates were high during larval stages (0.34 mm day )1 ) and remained high throughout juvenile (0.33 mm day )1 ) and adult stages (0.19 mm day )1 ). S. robustus reached 50% ma- turity at approximately 60 mm caudal fork length after approximately 135 days. Spawning occurred from Oc- tober to February (spring to late summer) and larvae were found mainly in Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, and Investigator Strait. Females spawned multiple batches of demersal eggs every 1-2 days. Batch fecundities were low (mean=756, SD=341) and increased linearly with length and weight. The life history of S. robustus is dissimilar to other small to medium-sized temperate clupeoids, but similar to those of many small sub-trop- ical and tropical clupeoids, including other Spratelloides species. Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf may be considered to be ''seasonally subtropical systems'' in an otherwise temperate region that support a suite of species, including S. robustus, that have life-history strategies similar to those of sub-topical and tropical taxa.

It has been suggested that larval survival determines the year-class strength in most marine fish species. During their growth and development, the ability of the larvae to catch prey and avoid predation will increase. However, the factors affecting short-term changes in the growth of Baltic Sea herring have been little studied in the field. We collected Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) larvae from five different towing areas in the Archipelago Sea (SW Finland) during May and June 1989, right after the main spawning season. Twenty thousand two hundred and ten larvae were analysed and the area-specific growth rate (i.e. increase in standard length) was estimated by tracing the larval cohorts from the length–frequency data. This represents the first Baltic herring study with daily sampling during a long study period. The growth rate was related to environmental factors, such as temperature, number of zooplankters, and wind speed and direction. Large variation in larval growth rate occurred between areas: lowest and highest growth rates were 0.18 and 0.52 mm·day–1. Temperature was an important variable controlling larval-fish growth rate. An increase of one 1°C in average water temperature corresponded to an increase in growth rate of 0.043 mm·day–1. This may have been caused either by a direct temperature effect (changes in metabolic rate) or by the indirect effect of changes in food availability. We also found the densest herring populations in the areas with highest average water temperature. However, temperature and larval growth rate both increased towards the inner archipelago.

The Australasian gannet (Morus serrator) population has increased considerably over the past century, both in New Zealand and Australia. Since 1980, the population in Australian waters has increased threefold, from 6,600 breeding pairs to approximately 20,000 pairs in 1999-2000, a rate of 6% per year. Reasons for the increase in the Australasian gannet population are poorly understood; here we consider the possible effects of recent fluctuations in climatic and oceanographic conditions, and changes in major local commercial fisheries. A significant trend towards more frequent, and stronger, El Nino Southern Oscillation events, warmer summer sea surface temperatures in Bass Strait, increased annual catches and catch per unit effort in the Victorian pilchard (Sardinops sagax) fishery and potential increased discarding of fisheries bycatch may account for at least some of the observed increase in the Australasian gannet population. The potential interactive effects of these factors on prey distribution and abundance and consequently on gannet numbers are discussed.

In at least two mass mortality events in Monterey Bay, California, planktivorous fish were implicated as vectors of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) from diatoms to sea birds and marine mammals. Whereas the transfer of DA from planktivorous fish to piscivorous predators has been well established, the relationship between toxin levels in plankton-feeding fish and the regional abundance of DA-producing diatoms has not been documented. Here we present data from an extensive field study in which cell densities of toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species and DA levels in anchovies and sardines were measured from samples collected weekly throughout Monterey Bay from 8 October 1999 to 18 October 2000. Four distinct blooms were documented with cell densities ranging from 3.2×103 to 5.0×105 cells l–1. DA was detected in fish viscera samples whenever toxic diatom densities reached ≥103 cells l–1 in surface waters, suggesting that anchovies and sardines regularly consume toxic diatoms when present. Fish contained DA levels above the regulatory limit (20 µg DA g–1 whole fish) only when toxic cell densities exceeded 104 cells l–1. DA was only detected in fish when toxic diatom species were also present in the water, suggesting that the toxin is quickly depurated and that fish are only dangerous vectors during the bloom period. Anchovies appear to be more potent vectors than sardines as they consistently contained more DA than sardines collected simultaneously. Maximum DA levels detected in fish were 1,815 µg DA g–1 in anchovy and 728 µg DA g–1 in sardine viscera samples. In fish with high viscera levels of DA, corresponding body tissues contained 0.2–2.2 µg DA g–1 (0.2±0.1% of the viscera level), suggesting that DA is not accumulated in edible body tissues to levels that threaten human consumers. Results from this study suggest that anchovies may be a valuable indicator species for assessing the risk of DA intoxication to piscivorous sea birds and mammals during toxic Pseudo-nitzschia blooms in Monterey Bay.

We examined diets and nest attendance patterns of northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) on Foula and Unst, Shetland, UK, during the breeding seasons of 1998 and 1999. Mean foraging trip duration, derived from nest attendance patterns, differed between incubation (32.5 h) and chick-rearing (early stage: 11.2 h, mid-stage: 20.4 h). It was influenced by chick age and obviously also by prey availability. The numbers of fulmars attending the colonies were influenced by wind direction, wind speed, time of day and state of reproduction. Diet samples were collected by regurgitations of adult and young fulmars. Diet was analysed by identifying prey items on the basis of otoliths, vertebrae, premaxillae (fish), cephalopod beaks and fragments of arthropod exoskeletons. Adult fulmars and chicks fed upon a wide range of prey types. Gadoid fish, including Norway pout (Trisopterus esmarkii), were the most common prey in the diet. Fish offal was found in 32% of regurgitates, clupeids in 15%. In contrast, the proportions of sandeels were very low (1%). This is different from previous studies where sandeels formed a large part of fulmar diet at Shetland in summer. Differences in food composition of incubating and chick-rearing fulmars were found for fish, but not for offal, crustaceans or squid. The percentage of non-discard fish (Clupeidae, Ammodytidae, Isospondylae) was significantly different between regurgitates from incubating and chick-rearing fulmars. Samples from chick-rearing adults contained non-discard items more frequently than regurgitates from incubating birds. The results strongly indicate that fulmars select to feed their chicks on energy-rich clupeids.

Otolith increment data were used to age larval Sardinops sagax from shelf waters between 118°E and 137°E off southern Australia. Maximum and mean growth rates up to an age of 30 days, estimated from a Laird–Gompertz model, were 0.62 and 0.48 mm day–1, respectively. The growth rate of larval S. sagax from southern Australia was less than, or at most comparable to, those estimated from the substantially more productive upwelling systems of southwestern Africa, the central coasts of North and South America, and inshore of the Kuroshio system east of Japan. The lower productivity of the sardine habitat off southern Australia could be expected to manifest as fewer and/or less extensive patches of suitably dense plankton, or lower levels of sufficient food availability, which results in the lower growth rate of larvae. This probably causes higher mortality and, along with slower growth rates of post-recruit stages, may therefore contribute to the low stock size of sardines in southern Australia. Nonetheless, the similarities in growth rates of larvae within a single species over widely separated regions suggest such rates fall between predetermined bounds, limited by starvation at the lower end and an ontogenetic maximum at the other.

Most studies characterizing successful biological invaders emphasize those traits that help a species establish a new population. Invasions are, however, multi-phase processes with at least two phases, dispersal and introduction, that occur before establishment. Characteristics that enhance survival at any of these three phases will contribute to invasion success. Here, we synthesize information on the dispersal, introduction, and establishment of fishes mediated by ship ballast-water transport. We synthesize 54 reports of at least 31 fish species collected from ballast tanks (Phase 1), including 28 new reports from our recent studies (1986 to 1996). Our literature survey revealed 40 reports of 32 fish species whose introductions have been attributed to ballast transport (Phase 2), of which at least 24 survived to establish persistent populations (Phase 3). We detected little overlap at the species level between these two data sets (Phase 1 vs Phases 2 and 3), but patterns emerged at the family level. The Gobiidae (6 species), Clupeidae (4 species), and Gasterosteidae (1 species) were the most commonly found fish families in ballast tanks (Phase 1). The Gobiidae (13 species), Blenniidae (6 species) and Pleuronectidae (2 species) dominated the list of ballast-mediated introductions (Phase 2); gobies and blennies were the families most frequently established (Phase 3). The invasive success of gobies and blennies may be explained in part by their crevicolous nature: both groups seek refuge and lay eggs in small holes, and may take advantage of the ballast-intake holes on ship hulls. This behavior, not typically associated with invasive ability, may contribute to successful introduction and establishment by facilitating the dispersal phase of invasion. The failure of the pleuronectids to invade may reflect poor salinity match between donor and recipient regions. To develop a predictive framework of invasion success, organisms must be sampled at all three phases of the invasion process. Our comparison of two ballast sampling methods suggests that fishes have been undersampled in ballast-water studies, including our own, and that the role of ballast transport in promoting fish invasions has been underestimated.

The size-specific nutritional conditions of larval sardines, Sardinops melanostictus, from the main Kuroshio Current and its offshore waters off eastern Japan were assessed by lipid analysis. A rapid lipid analysis technique (diagnostic kits for human serum lipids) was used to measure the different lipid components of individual sardine larvae as indicators of their nutritional condition. Size-specific growth trajectories of individual larvae were estimated by the biological intercept method, and the recent daily growth rate of standard length (SL) was calculated from the 3 d outer increment width on the otolith. Relationships between the amount of larval phospholipid (PL; tissue weight indicator) and SL, and the recent daily growth rate of larva (Gr) and SL, could be expressed by the equations PL = 0.459 SL1.77 and Gr = 0.0809 SL − 0.341, respectively. There was no notable difference in these values between the two survey areas. The relationship between the amount of triglyceride (TG) and SL could be expressed allometrically (TG = 0.013 SL2.63). The relationship between the index of starvation tolerance (TG/PL) and SL could be expressed by the allometric equation TG/PL = 0.0288 SL0.865, suggesting that larger sardine have a higher starvation tolerance than smaller sardine. The TG of the 8 to 9 mm SL size-class larvae in the offshore area was higher than in the main Kuroshio Current. To test whether the TG for each larval sardine in the 8 to 9 mm SL size-class could be correlated with variables (temperature, chlorophyll a and distribution density of the sardine larvae) measured at the sampling stations, correlation analyses were performed. A highly significant negative correlation between TG and distribution density of the sardine larvae was found. A density-dependence effect seemed to influence the fluctuation of the larval storage energy component for short-term needs.

As part of a “European Sardine/Anchovy Recruitment Program” (SARP), sardine larvae (Sardina pilchardus) were sampled off the Atlantic coast of Spain through the spawning season from March to June. The larvae were analysed for carbon and nitrogen content as a measure of nutritional condition and survival potential. There was no significant diel variation in larval carbon content, but there was a small significant diel variation in nitrogen; the absence of a strong diel signal in elemental composition was ascribed to the overnight retention of the gut contents. There was an increase in carbon content with increase in body length which reached an asymptote at ∼40% carbon content at a larval length of 20 mm. It is argued that larvae with a carbon content of

Most studies on feeding by herring larvae (Clupea harengus) have taken place in clear, open waters, but several herring stocks around the world spawn in inshore and estuarine regions. An example is the spring-spawning Blackwater Estuary (Essex, England) stock. Samples were collected in this estuary to examine prey selectivity and feeding levels in relation to biological and environmental conditions. Herring larvae negatively selected copepod nauplii, but positively selected the copepodite and adult stages of Acartia spp. Gastropod larvae were also positively selected. Particles >150 μm width were preferred, whilst particles smaller than this value were preferentially rejected. Concentrations of potential prey items in the water were in the range of 6.0 to 49.7 organisms l−1 with a median concentration of 15.0 organisms l−1 (n = 26). These values are towards the low end of prey concentrations quoted in the literature as being required to sustain herring larval growth and survival. However, theoretical considerations suggest that, in this environment, levels of tidally-induced turbulence enhance encounter rates between larval herring and their prey. On the other hand, turbidity is also related to tidal current speed and might reduce feeding success by decreasing underwater light levels. Measurements at two sites in the estuary confirmed that tidally-induced turbidity reduced the effective water depth in which herring larvae could visually feed by up to 50% at times of peak current speed. However, with the gut-content data available in the present study, it was not possible to discern any clear relationships between feeding success and the state of the tide. Feeding success appeared to be more strongly influenced by surface light-levels.

In the coastal waters off the Tanshui River Estuary in northern Taiwan, eight species of clupeoid larvae were observed. They exhibited a distinct temporal succession in association with seasonal temperature changing. The time of peak abundance of Etrumeus teres was in January, Engraulis japonicus in late April, Sardinella spp. in mid-May, Dussumieria elopsoides in early June, Thryssa dussumieri in late June, Stolephorus insularis in mid-September, Encrasicholina heteroloba in early October and E. punctifer in mid-November. The time intervals of the temporal succession of the fishes were approximately 15 to 25 d in the spring/summer and 25 to 35 d in the autumn/winter fishing seasons. Also, they showed spatial segregation by distributing in areas with different water depths: Sardinella spp. at a water depth of 10 to 20 m, T. dussumieri at less than 10 m, E. heteroloba at 20 to 50 m and E. punctifer at 10 to 40 m. The larvae of these sympatric clupeoid species segregated their nursing periods and areas apparently to reduce competition for habitat and thus to maximize the utilization of resources.

Biological sampling of Spanish sardine (#Sardinella aurita$ Valenciennes, 1847) off the coast of Venezuela from 1956 to 1989 was used to study the reproductive strategy and migration pattern of the population. Whereas in many pelagic fishes the energy re-allocation necessary for reproduction usually occurs optimally at the end of the upwelling season when planktonic production reaches a maximum, in the present study a 5 mo delay was observed. This suggests that energy was stored as lipids early in the season and released later via metabolism for gamete production. Major reproduction did not occur in an area and at a time when offshore transport and turbulence were low, which is also unusual for a pelagic fish species. These results are discussed in terms of the life cycle of the Spanish sardine and its possible migratory patterns. The reproductive strategy of this population apparently gives priority to optimising food availability for the offspring and not to preventing eggs and larvae being transported offshore. The presence of "retention" areas could explain this unexpected strategy. (Résumé d'auteur)

The escape behaviour of solitary herring (Clupea harengus L.) startled by a sound stimulus was observed by means of high-speed video-filming. The results were compared with data from a previous study on the escape behaviour of schooling herring. Escape responses were divided into “away responses” and “towards responses” according to the orientation of the C-bend of the body relative to the stimulus. The proportion of away responses was smaller for solitary than for schooling herring. In solitary herring, the subsequent escape trajectories of fish making initial away responses showed a bimodal pattern of distribution, with modes at 130 and 180° from the stimulus. Trajectories following towards responses, however, were mainly within the semicircle directed at the stimulus, and their pattern of distribution differed from that of away responses. This result contrasts with observations on schooling herring, whose trajectories following both initial away and towards responses are directed away from the stimulus. In addition, we measured the response latency, defined as the interval of time between stimulus presentation and the first detectable movement of the fish. Growth trajectories of individual larvae of Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus, caught in the coastal waters off western Japan were back-calculated from the first feeding stage up to date of capture (approximate size of 20 to 35 mm total length; TL) based on individually determined allometric relationships between otolith daily ring radii and fish total lengths. The larvae in January-, February-, and March-hatched cohorts in the coastal waters grew faster and more uniformly than those in the oceanic waters offshore of the Kuroshio current. Growth trajectories of the three hatch-month cohorts were similar and could be expressed by the Gompertz model. The inflection points of the growth curves were reached at 9 to 11 d after hatching, when larvae were 10.8 to 11.8 mm TL. Maximum growth rates at these points were 0.80 to 0.85 mm d−1. Growth rates gradually declined after the inflection points, and larval TLs converged into the infinite length of 29 to 32 mm, the sizes at which metamorphosis from larvae to juveniles is initiated. This asymptotic growth pattern in the larval stage resulted in the narrow ranges in TLs in spite of the wide range of ages of the larvae caught by boat seiners in the coastal waters. Slow growth and therefore long duration of the metamorphosing stage could be influential in determining the cumulative total mortality in the early life stages of the Japanese sardine.

Autumn-spawned North Sea herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) were released in two outdoor mesocosms of 2500 m 3 (A) and 4000 m 3 (B). The meso- cosms were monitored for temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll a, zooplankton and herring larvae abun- dance. The density of suitable prey for first feeding larvae (mainly copepod nauplii) was initially low in Mesocosm A ( 1 1-1). Half-way through the experiment the situ- ation was reversed, with higher densities of prey in Mesocosm A (> 31 1) as compared to Mesocosm B ( ~ 1 1-1). The average temperature declined steadily in both mesocosms from 18 ~ at release to 11-12 ~ by the end of the experiment 60 d later. The RNA: DNA values of individual herring larvae were related to protein growth rates and temperature adjusted accord- ing to Buckley (1984). A corresponding DNA growth index (Gdi) was given as: Gdi = 0.68 TEMP + 3.05 RNA : DNA - 9.92. The RNA : DNA based growth in- dices were significantly correlated with other somatic growth estimates. The average estimated protein growth rate in the two mesocosms followed the same temporal pattern as the somatic growth rate, but with a lag of 2 d or more. The pilchards (genus Sardinops), one of the major components of the world's harvest of fishes, is distributed sporadically in the temperate zone on a global scale. Mitochondrial DNA variation in 95 pilchards from nine worldwide localities in five current systems was examined using ten restriction enzymes. Although several opinions have been proposed on the global population structure of the genus Sardinops, our results clearly rejected the hypothesis of gene flow among geographically distant populations on a global scale. Results indicate that the Japanese pilchards and the Australian and South African pilchards were derived from the eastern Pacific populations, following the speciation of Sardinops in the Pacific, after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. An intermixing of the northeastern and southeastern Pacific populations during the Pleistocene glacial maxima is suggested from their genetic affinities.

RNA/DNA ratios in individual herring (Clupea harengus) larvae (collected from Kiel Bay, Baltic Sea, in 1989) were measured and proved suitable for determining nutritional status. Significant differences between fed and starving larvae appeared after 3 to 4 d of food deprivation in larvae older than 10 d after hatching. The RNA/DNA ratio showed an increase with age or length of the larvae and was less pronounced in starving larvae compared to fed larvae. The individual variability of RNA/DNA ratios in relation to larval length of fed larvae and of larvae deprived of food for intervals of 6 to 9 d is presented. Based on the length dependency and the individual variability found within the RNA/DNA ratios, a laboratory calibration is given to determine whether a larva caught in the field has been starving or not. An example for a field application is shown.

A total of 66814 fish larvae, representing 37 families and 74 species, were collected in samples taken monthly between January 1986 and April 1987 from 13 sites located at frequent intervals throughout the large Swan Estuary in south-western Australia. The Gobiidae was the most abundant family, comprising 88.2% of the total number of larvae, followed by the Clupeidae (3.4%), Engraulididae (2.9%) and Blenniidae (1.0%). The most abundant species were Pseudogobius olorum (53.3%), Arenigobius bifrenatus (31.2%) and Engraulis australis (2.9%). Abundance of fish larvae in the lower, middle and upper regions of the estuary each reached a maximum between mid-spring and early summer, 2 to 4 mo before the attainment of maximum temperatures. Larvae of species such as Nematalosa vlaminghi and Apogon rueppellii were collected only between November and February, whereas those of others such as P. olorum, E. australis and Leptatherina wallacei were present over many months. The times and locations of capture of larvae have been related to the distribution and breeding periods of the adults of these species. The mean monthly number of species was far greater in the lower than upper estuary (14.7 vs 2.7), whereas the reverse was true for mean monthly concentration (42 vs 197 larvae per 100 m3). Classification, using the abundance of each of the 74 species recorded at the different sites, showed that the composition of the larval fish fauna in the lower, middle and upper estuary differed markedly from each other. Most larvae caught in the lower estuary belonged to marine species, whereas those in the upper estuary almost exclusively represented species that spawn within the estuary. The fact that the larvae of the 59 species of marine teleosts recorded during this study were restricted mainly to the lower estuary, and yet contributed only 6.2% to the total numbers for the whole estuary, helps to account for the relatively high species diversity in this region. The lack of penetration of many of these larvae beyond the first 12.5 km of the estuary presumably reflects the weak tidal effect in the wide basins of the middle estuary and saline regions of the tributary rivers. The larvae of the 13 teleosts that typically spawn within the estuary contributed 93.8% to the total numbers of larvae. Most of these estuarine-spawned larvae belong to teleosts that deposit demersal eggs and/or exhibit parental care (egg-guarding and oral and pouch-brooding), characteristics which would maximize their chances of retention within the estuary.

We measured growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus in terms of mass, volume, and weight in water as well as the mass-specific activities of the metabolic enzymes citrate synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase. Weight in water, the force the fish must exert to maintain vertical position, increases by a factor of 18 in larvae growing from 10 to 15 mm. The weight increase coincides with the development of the larval swim bladder. The activities of all three enzymes per unit mass of fish tissue decline greatly over this time period, indicating that the fish does not further develop its aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacity for swimming during this growth interval.

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.

The demersal fish fauna of Albatross Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, was sampled on seven cruises from August 1986 to November 1988, using a random stratified trawl survey. Four depth zones between 7 and 45 m were sampled during both day and night. The mean biomass of fish from all seven cruises was 297 kg ha−1 for days trawls and 128 kg ha−1 for night trawls. The overall mean catch rates were 922 kg h−1 for day trawls and 412 kg h−1 for night trawls. There were marked differences between cruises in both the biomass and catch rate. Approx 890 000 fish of 237 species were collected. Of these, 25 species comprised 82% of the total biomass and 74% of the overall catch rate. The dominant families were Leiognathidae, Haemulidae and Clupeidae, with Sciaenidae and Dasyatidae important at night.Leiognathus bindus was the most abundant species. Twenty-five species occurred in more than 50% of trawls, withCaranx bucculentus the most frequently caught (96% of all trawls). Thirty four species were predators on prawns; their absolute mean biomass was 50 kg ha−1 during the day and 39 kg ha−1 at night. The corresponding catch rates were 171 and 125 kg h−1. Multiple-regression analyses were used to discriminate the effects of diel, seasonal, depth and cruise patterns. Of the 31 most abundant species, 15 showed diel patterns of abundance; 11 species showed seasonal patterns of abundance; 23 species had differential depth distribution; and 13 species showed significant cruise-to-cruise variation in abundance. Cruise variations in abundance were tested against salinity, temperature, tidal exchange, plankton biomass and prawn abundances as well as periods (and lags) of total rainfall prior to sampling. Only total rainfall showed any significant correlation. Total rainfall over a period of 6 wk immediately prior to sampling showed significant positive correlations with the abundances of five species, with overall daytime catch rates, and with the suite of 34 prawn predators. Rainfall and river runoff into Albatross Bay were significantly correlated. In Albatross Bay, the complex of factors affecting fish abundances and the magnitude of between-cruise differences indicate that such tropical communities may be unpredictable and are not seasonally constant. The high catch rates in Albatross Bay relative to similar tropical areas elsewhere are discussed and attributed to the light exploitation of the Albatross Bay stocks. Other than a prawn fishery, there is no commercial trawling in Albatross Bay. Hence, the only fishing mortality is a result of by-catch from prawn trawling. The annual total of such fish by-catch is probably less than 10% of the estimated standing stock of 93 000 tonnes.

From July to September 1982 feeding experiments were conducted with 138-mm fork length Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus (Latrobe) (Pisces: Clupeidae) to determine their particle size-specific feeding abilities. Monoculture clearing-rate experiments showed that the minimum size of particles filtered, the minimum size threshold, for 138-mm fish is 7 to 9 μm. Filtration efficiency for three species of phytoplankton below the minimum size threshold. Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa, Monochrysis lutheri, and Isochrysis galbana, averaged 1.0% (n=14). Tetraselmis suecica, Prorocentrum minimum, and 2-celled Skeleionema costatum, phytoplankton which are larger than the minimum size threshold and smaller than the 20-μm upper limit for nanoplankton, were filtered at efficiencies averaging 21% (n=24). S. costatum chains of 3 to 6 cells, prey particles exceeding the size limits of nanoplankton, were filtered at average efficiencies ranging from 22 to 84%. The mean filtration efficiency for Artemia sp. nauplii (San Francisco Bay Brand) of 36% (n=7) was lower than for smaller phytoplankton prey. The presence of detritus at concentrations usually encountered in nature enhanced filtering efficiency and lowered minimum size thresholds at which phytoplankton were retained. For small food particles, filtering efficiency decreased as swimming speed of the menhaden increased. As menhaden grow, their feeding tepertoire shifts to larger planktonic organisms.

A seasonal study of the inshore fish community was conducted in 1981 and 1982 at two stations in Malaga Bay (SE Spain). A total of 66 fish species were caught. Two families, Clupeidae (68.6%) and Engraulidae (28.5%), dominated in numbers, and Carangidae (54.3%) and Sparidae (29.1%) in biomass for both zones. There were two periods of high fish density in each zone: winter (2.2 g m-2) and autumn (2.0 g m-2) in the western zone and spring (2.95 g m-2) and summer (3.6 g m-2) in the eastern zone. Species diversity was relatively high during spring (2.95 and 3.00) and summer (2.32 and 2.44), showing clear variation with other zones of the Spanish coasts. An increase in diversity and number of fish species from north to south was observed. The area studied (0 to 15 m deep) serves as a nursery for larvae and young fish of several species appearing in the catches. The zoogeographical affinities of the fish species caught are: tropicals 25.7%, boreals 24.2%, Iberian-Moroccan 14%, endemics 4.5%.

Food selection by laboratory-reared larvae of scaled sardines Harengula pensacolae, and bay anchovies Anchoa mitchilli, was compared. Natural plankton was fed to the larvae during the 22 days following hatching. Food levels in the rearing tanks were maintained at an average of 1,600 to 1,800 potential food organisms per liter. Larvae of both species selected as food copepod nauplii, copepodites, and copepods; initial feeding was on organisms of 50 to 75 μ body width. Larvae of H. pensacolae averaged 4.2 mm in total length at hatching and those of A. mitchilli about 2.0 mm. H. pensacolae larvae grew about 1.0 mm per day and A. mitchilli 0.70 mm per day. The mean number of food organisms in each digestive tract was greater in H. pensacolae than in A. mitchilli, and the difference in number increased as the larvae grew. Average size of food organisms eaten increased for both species with growth, because of selection by the larvae; the average size of copepodites and copepods in digestive tracts increased at a faste rate in H. pensacolae than A. mitchilli. A. mitchilli longer than 8 mm did not eat copepod nauplii.
