The rhopalia and statocysts of Periphylla periphylla (Péron and Lesueur in Ann Mus Hist Nat Marseille 14:316-366,) and Chironex fleckeri Southcott (Aust J Mar Freshw Res 7(2):254-280 ) were examined histologically and showed several homologous characteristics. Differences in sensory area distribution could be connected to a slightly different functionality of equilibrium sensing. In P. periphylla, the statoliths (crystals) grow independently of each other; whereas in C. fleckeri, one large crystal covers the smaller ones. The structures of both statoliths were examined in detail with single-crystal diffraction, microtomography and diffraction contrast tomography. The single compact statolith of C. fleckeri consisted of bassanite as was previously known only for other rhopaliophoran medusae. An origin area with several small oligocrystals was located in the centre of the cubozoan statolith. The origin areas and the accretion of statoliths are similar in both species. Our results lead to the assumption that the single bassanite statolith of C. fleckeri (Cnidaria, Cubozoa) is a progression of the scyphozoan multiplex statolith. It is therefore suggested that the Cubozoa are derived from a scyphozoan ancestor and are a highly developed taxa within the Rhopaliophora. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The globally distributed coronate scyphomedusa Periphylla periphylla (Peron and Lesueur, 1809) occurs in permanent and extremely high abundance in some Norwegian fjords. Studies on the species in Lurefjorden, 40 km north of Bergen, have revealed a holopelagic life cycle with direct development. We distinguished 14 successive developmental stages, characterised by size and morphology. Eggs and early stages are non-mobile, neutrally buoyant, and found mainly at intermediate depths. Rearing studies indicated a development time of 2-3 months from fertilisation to stage 9, when the medusa starts feeding and becomes motile. The fjord population usually shows a strong diel vertical migration, with aggregations at shallower depths during the night. The development includes a gradual increase in pigmentation (porphyrins), starting with the stomach, and thereafter extending to tentacles and the whole exumbrella. This pigment is photodegraded by natural light. Rearing experiments in the laboratory have shown a lethal effect of light. Here, development stops at stage 5. Pigments become visible in stage 7. Older medusae are severely damaged and killed within a few days by exposure to daylight. All stages of P. periphylla are bioluminescent, with this capacity increasing with growth, probably in connection with the development of the nervous net. The light reaction starts at the point of stimulation and spreads at two different speeds corresponding to the two nerve nets of the medusae. The coronal furrow has a central function in transmission of the reaction. It is hypothesised that the bioluminescence is used mainly as a warning to some potential predators, signalling that the porphyrin-containing medusa is unpalatable. P. periphylla has the same two categories of nematocysts as other coronates, with a total of six different types. Nematocyst abundance, distribution and morphology indicate their function. Scyphomedusae play important roles in marine ecosystems and are of economic significance. However, no reliable techniques for estimating scyphomedusa age have been documented. This study focused on the utility of Cassiopea sp. (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) statoliths, statocysts, and body size as proxies for age of medusae. Reared medusae of known age and a manipulative experiment were used to assess the accuracy and reliability of four measures of age: number of statoliths, size (diameter) of statoliths, area of statocyst (housing statoliths), and bell diameter. Bell diameter provided the most accurate measure of age under constant conditions, but was increasingly inaccurate under varying environmental conditions. In contrast, the average number of statoliths per medusa reflected age with relatively low accuracy, but did not vary with changes in food availability and salinity. Only temperature influenced the average number of statoliths. Comparisons of bell diameter to the number of statoliths in medusae under low food availability to those fed well showed that the ratio of medusa size to the number of statoliths can be used to recognise medusae that are relatively poorly conditioned. Rhizostoma pulmo is one of the most abundant scyphomedusae along the Mediterranean coasts. To understand changes in the population densities of the medusa stage and its relationship with the benthic stage, we describe all developmental stages from the life cycle of R. pulmo, from the scyphistoma stage to young medusae reared in the laboratory. Mature scyphistomae showed a mean total body length of 1.7 mm and the average tentacle number was 16. Asexual reproduction occurred by lateral budding, podocyst and pedalocyst production. Each strobila released up to 8 ephyrae that had a mean total body diameter of 3.5 mm. Moreover, we also present data on the temporal and spatial distribution of the species in the Catalan Sea and the coastal lagoon on Mar Menor (NW Mediterranean) during the years 2007-2009. In the Catalan Sea, the presence of adult R. pulmo was recorded as extended along the whole coast, but most of the observation was concentrated in the central area; the highest abundances were recorded during the months of July and August. An account is given about the development of the gametes of the holopelagic coronate scyphomedusa Periphylla periphylla (Péron and Lesueur 1809). The gonads of the species are complex and differ from those thus far described in Scyphozoa in having this characteristic composition of trophocytes, follicle cells, gamete-releasing pores, mucus cells, and resorption cells. Our results differ from those of previous coronate studies with respect to the contact of the oocytes with the gonad tissue throughout the duration of development. Among the Medusozoa, follicle cells have thus far been considered as an apomorphy for the Staurozoa, but their presence in the Scyphozoa casts some doubts on this assumption. From morphological structure and examination of the gonads and gametes, it can be deduced that P. periphylla has true organs and that gamete release is continuous. The species Thecoscyphus zibrowii Werner, 1984 has an exceptional life cycle, which lacks a medusa stage but develops an extraordinary structure (egg sac) for reproduction. Investigation of the life cycle, as well as anatomical and histological studies of the different developmental stages of T. zibrowii were performed to provide evidence for a possible homology of the egg sac with the medusa stage and to determine whether the reduced metagenesis of T. zibrowii is derived from strobilation. The egg sac showed several characteristics, which were compared to those of coronate medusae. The ectodermis of the egg sac had a plate-like appearance and was completely ciliated as is typical for coronate medusae. The number and the location of the gonads were similar to those of coronate medusae. The cnidocysts were significantly larger in the egg sac than in the polyp. A size difference of cnidocysts in the medusa and the polyp stage is known for several Coronatae. Characteristics of egg sac formation were compared to characteristics of strobilation. The formation of the early operculum was similar in T. zibrowii and N. eumedusoides. The constriction of egg sac and strobila occurred in the same mode and the gastric cavities of two egg sacs stayed in contact in a similar fashion to the gastric cavities of the strobila discs. The developmental zones of cnidoblasts of the egg sac and polyp were separated during the formation of the egg sac which showed a similar developmental gradient to a strobila. The existence of all of these consistent characteristics makes it very likely that the egg sac structure was homologous to a medusa. The species T. zibrowii would therefore be derived from a metagenetic ancestor. This species has reduced the medusa generation to the greatest extent within the Nausithoidae and has demonstrated thus far the endpoint of a regressive evolution of the medusa generation. In this paper, we present evidence of direct development life cycles and brooding behaviour in two narcomedusae species in the family Cuninidae, as well as a histological description of another narcomedusan species from the family Aeginidae. Cunina peregrina were found to be brooding juveniles within the subumbrella. Brood contents varied in size and developmental stage. In addition, pairs of small white spheres enclosed within a membrane, most likely an oocyte and phorocyte (nurse cell) were observed around the stomach wall. It is suggested that two life cycles are occurring simultaneously: (1) asexual budding of actinula larvae from the parent medusa which develop into fully developed medusa; and (2) sexual reproduction producing an egg and phorocyte pair which develops into an actinula and a four-tentacle reduced medusa. In Solmissus incisa opaque spheres of various sizes were attached to the external walls of the gastric pouches. The spheres appeared to start off as a developing oocyte attached firmly to the adult, before developing into a sessile planula larva. The planula had a thick ectoderm and endoderm and was attached to the adult gastric pouches at its oral surface. This attachment appeared to pinch into the adult stomach pouch forcing some stomach tissue into the oral opening of the developing planula, possibly suggesting some nutritional aid from the adult. It is not clear whether this is a parasitism on the adult to gain nutrition or parental brood care. Nine specimens of Aeginura grimaldii were collected. White growths located on the subumbrellar surface in between the gastric pouches were found to be male gonads containing sperm. The gonads had a granular texture consisting of a lightly speckled black pigmentation, which became denser in the red subumbrella tissue. Histology revealed this to be porphyrin bodies. The life cycle of Lychnorhiza lucerna (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae) and the settlement preferences of its larvae were studied using laboratory-based rearing experiments. Mature medusae of L. lucerna were collected from the beach of the Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina. This species displayed the typical metagenetic, (i.e. medusoid and polypoid), life cycle reported for other rhizostomes. The fertilized eggs developed into motile and short lived planulae. The majority of planulae settled on the air-water interface ( p < 0.001). Of those that settled on the settlement plates provided, no significant differences were observed between styrene slides, glass slides and shells of the bivalve Mactra isabelleana ( p > 0.05). No planulae settled on stones. Several hours after planulae settled, they metamorphosed into sessile four-tentacled scyphistomae. Most scyphistomae attached onto the air-water interface. At 19–22°C, the scyphistomae grew up to 22 tentacles and reached 1,500 μm height. The scyphistomae increased their numbers by means of formation of podocysts from which new polyps emerged and strobilated. Strobilation occurred 46 days after settlement. Only polydisk strobilation was observed and each strobila always produced three ephyrae. After releasing ephyrae, strobilae returned to normal scyphistomae and were capable of repeating strobilation. A single founder polyp was estimated to produce up to 60 ephyrae over 4 months. Ephyrae developed into metephyrae 15 days after release at 19–22°C. Some western Norwegian fjords host extraordinarily abundant and persistent populations of the mesopelagic, coronate scyphomedusa, Periphylla periphylla. In these environments, from late autumn to spring, the medusae undertake regular diel vertical migrations into surface waters. From unique observations obtained with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), including observations made without artificial light, we observed that 90% of the medusae swam with their tentacles in aboral position. Stomach content analyses of surface-collected specimens revealed that the medusae ate mainly calanoid copepods, but ostracods and large euphausiids were also prominent components of their diets. The clearance rate potential of P. periphylla, assessed from in situ observations and stomach contents, was comparable to that of similar-sized, epipelagic gelatinous species. The morphogenesis of ephyrae of Atorella vanhoeffeni Bigelow, (Werner, ) and of Nausithoe maculata Jarms, during strobilation is described. We found differences in the developmental pattern of marginal structures and structural changes of longitudinal muscle tubes in particular. During strobilation the polyp’s tetraradiate symmetry is passed to the ephyra of both taxa as a tetraradiate central symmetry that we consider a major plesiomorphic character. The present results also indicate divergent patterns of ephyra development during strobilation that lead to variable marginal symmetries of ephyrae and thus of medusae. Therefore, the marginal symmetry of medusae of N. maculata is octoradiate and of A. vanhoeffeni is hexaradiate. We conclude the latter is stated as derived pattern. Stages in the life cycle of the rhizostome jellyfish Rhizostoma octopus (L.) were reared in the laboratory from planula to young medusa and are described here. Fertilization of eggs was external, and planulae, 110–150 μm in length, appeared after 2 days. These settled and developed into the scyphistoma stage. Scyphistomae reached a maximum size of 2.3 mm, bore up to 24 tentacles, and had a large manubrium. Polyps reproduced asexually mainly by podocysts. Strobilation was induced by temperature change. Each strobila released up to five ephyrae that measured 2.7–5.8 mm in diameter at liberation. During transformation from newly released ephyra to young medusa, velar lappets appeared and increased in number, the manubrium developed eight branched oral arms with epaulettes, and a marginal gastric network arose. Only one cnidocyst type, the “a”-atrichous haploneme, was present in the planula. In addition to these haplonemes, heterotrichous microbasic euryteles were observed in polyps, ephyrae, and medusae. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV)-based field studies on the distribution and behaviour of Periphylla periphylla Péron and Lesueur (Ann Mus Hist Nat Marseille 14:316–366, 1809), from three Norwegian fjords have been combined with on-board experiments and morphological and histological studies in order to understand the trophic ecology of this species. Field studies from one of the fjords showed that the zooplankton biomass was negatively related with P. periphylla abundance, indicating a predatory effect. The majority of zooplankton biomass tended to be distributed above the aggregation of P. periphylla, which in turn showed highest abundance at 100–200 m depth. Observation on the orientation of medusae passing the ROV when descending down in the water column at dawn and dusk, showed no consistency with the theory of diel vertical migration. Estimated metabolic demand of P. periphylla indicated a daily predation impact on the prey assemblage of 13% as an average for the fjord. In situ behavioural observations showed that the dominant tentacle posture of large medusae was straight upward, with tentacles extended to the oral–aboral body axis. The hunting mode alternates between ambush and ramming, whereby tentacle posture minimises the water turbulence that may otherwise alarm the prey. The musculature of the tentacles is well developed, with an especially strong longitudinal muscle on the oral side, facilitating fast movement of the tentacle towards the mouth. In addition, ring-, radial-, and diagonal musculatures are also present. The diagonal is probably most important for the corkscrew retraction of the tentacle, used at the moment of prey capture. Results from laboratory experiments show that different body-parts of P. periphylla vary in sensitivity for chemical and mechanical stimuli, including hydrodynamic disturbance and vibration in the surrounding water. Feeding success is facilitated by combining the vibration-sense on the tentacle tips and the marginal lappets, the touch-sense on the tentacle bases and marginal lappets, and a taste control of the captured prey at the mouthlips. Colonial epifauna are vulnerable to the effects of bottom fishing, but impacts on the life histories of these non-target animals have not been examined extensively. Dredging potentially impairs sexual reproduction by invoking regeneration and induces clonality by severing colonies or through the abortion of damaged modules. This study investigated the potential for commercial-scale scallop dredging to alter sexual and asexual (“clonal”) reproduction in the hydroidSertularia cupressina. In total, 1,071 colonies from 104 epizoic microhabitats (upper valves of live scallops relatively undisturbed by fishing) and 75 epilithic microhabitats (cobbles more severely disturbed by fishing) were collected from 53 to 94-m depths in the Bay of Fundy (Atlantic Canada). Colony abundance, injury frequency (proportion of colonies with sealed, snapped off stems), percentage of fertile colonies and sexual fecundity (number of gonophores and gonophore dimensions) were measured on all substrata. Ten randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers were used to estimate clonal diversity. Field experiments found no significant effect of microhabitat differences between scallop and cobble substrata on fecundity and clonality inS. cupressina, while experimentally-induced injuries suppressed the percent of fertile colonies. On the fishing grounds, colonies on scallop valves were more abundant and sexually fertile than their counterparts on cobble, and all were sexually derived. In contrast, colonies on cobbles had a greater percentage of injury, were less fertile and were frequently clonally-derived. Impacts of fishing-related injuries on reproduction in colonial epifauna have been overlooked, yet the long-term consequences of such impacts could result in reduced adaptability, recruitment and recovery potential of these and dependent organisms.
