The Butano Sandstone forms part of an Eocene submarine fan deposited in the La Honda basin in central California. The Butano submarine fan has been subdivided into three main facies associations: southern inner-fan deposits, central middle-fan deposits, and northern outer-fan deposits. In spite of homogeneous quartzofeldspathic sandstone composition, these outcrop belts have several compositional and mineralogical differences, likely caused by post-depositional events related to the complex tectonic history of the La Honda basin, and expressed in deep-burial diagenesis and possible hydrothermal alteration. Both compaction and cementation reduced the intergranular volume (lower than 19 %) and the Compactional Index (average 0.9), indicating the major role of compaction in reducing original porosity. The southern proximal-fan and northern distal-fan outcrops exhibit different relative abundance of detrital quartz (Qm 43.5 %) than the middle-fan central outcrop (Qm 50.7 %). Primarily plagioclase and subordinately K-feldspar suffered leaching and intense dissolution during burial, particularly in the central part of the basin, even showing similar and quite constant distribution of alteration degree among the three outcrop belts (dominantly Fpc, Fpd, Fka, and Fkb grain types). Plagioclase abundance decreases in the middle-fan deposits proportionally with the increase of authigenic kaolinite, even where present in moderate amount; in contrast, authigenic kaolinite of inner-fan strata probably formed after partial dissolution of K-feldspar. Records of tide-reworked fan delta facies models are rare in literature, attributed to their lower abundances due to complex sediment distribution pattern by two exclusive end-member flows, viz., a seaward directed subaerial to subaqueous debris flow, and dominant tidal current system interfering with and reworking the debris flow. Lack of appropriate analogues of tide-reworked fan deltas makes the ancient examples more significant. The analysis of such rare tide-reworked fan deltas from deep-time, e.g., Mesoproterozoic, turns out to be unique due to the gap in clear understanding of the alluvial-fluvial vs marine processes in non-vegetated land parts. The lower part of the Mesoproterozoic Rajgarh Formation, Lalsot Basin, North Delhi Fold Belt, Aravalli Craton in NW India, provides a rare record of a tide-reworked fan delta depositional system. Sedimentary facies analysis reveals eleven lithofacies grouped under three major facies associations, viz., (i) gravel-rich conglomerate facies association, characterized by stacked debris flow deposits forming a subaerial alluvial fan, representing the delta topset component, followed downslope by (ii) pebbly, cross-stratifed sandstone facies association, characterized by reworking of the subaqueously emplaced debris flows by ebb-tidal currents, to produce the mouth bar and the delta front depositional systems, and finally, (iii) sandstone-mudstone heterolithic facies association, characterized by abundant tidal signatures in pebble-free thin-bedded sandstone-mudstone heteroliths with tidal bundles, herringbone cross-strata and wave ripples, characterizing a stable platformal subtidal-intertidal flat depositional system. The lower-middle part of the succession records an aggradational stratal stacking pattern of the subaerial alluvial fan changing to progradational stratal stacking of the laterally accreted debris-rich tide-led clinoforms producing the delta topset – mouth bar – delta front transiton of a tide-reworked fan-delta under successive regressive conditions, representing syn-rift deposition near the basin margin. A retrogradational stratal stacking pattern overlies the fan-delta succession, and signifies a transgression by landward encroaching tidal flat system over the fan-delta system during post-rift phase in a stable platformal setup, where debris supply is ceased. The purpose of this paper is (i) to re-assess the presence of submarine fan systems of Middle and Late Miocene age (Moki and Mount Messenger formations) previously mapped on the continental slope in offshore southern and central Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, and (ii), to demonstrate the occurrence of two newly mapped Late Miocene submarine fans in the deep-water part of offshore western Taranaki Basin, based on accepted seismic stratigraphic criteria for submarine fans. In our work we have found that the fans previously mapped amongst canyons and channels in the Moki and Mount Messenger formations on the upper and middle continental slope in southern and central Taranaki Basin do not fulfil established stratal criteria for submarine fan deposits. Moreover, detuning of 3D seismic reflection volumes for the Moki and Mount Messenger formation intervals ahead of amplitude attribute extraction, shows that the strata previously mapped as submarine fans based on amplitude alone, are merely artifacts of bed thickness. The two new fans systems of Late Miocene age that we map here, both attributed to the Mount Messenger Formation, principally comprise mudstone and represent a minor proportion of the Late Miocene succession that accumulated in southern and central parts of the basin. Our remapping of slope canyons and channels in the southern part of the basin and the identification of the two new fan systems in the western part of the basin are embodied in three new paloegeographic maps for the Middle and Late Miocene development of Taranaki Basin. A modern analogue for the two new Late Miocene fans in Taranaki Basin is the Hikurangi Fan at the terminus of the Hikurangi Channel, located outboard of the modern subduction zone of the Hikurangi margin along Eastern North Island. The fine siliciclastic rocks of the Early Permian Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, central Inner Mongolia are a hot spot for Late Paleozoic oil and gas exploration and hold key implications for the tectonic evolution during the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). Therefore, the sedimentary characteristics of the Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, along with the geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic characteristics of the clastic rock samples in Well MXD1, were investigated to privde additional constraints on its provenance and tectonic background. The mudstones contain large proportions of quartz, feldspars and igneous debris, and the CIAcorr (0.52–0.66), the A–CN–K plot and the lack of Ce anomalies in REE show a weakly weathered provenance and the chemically unaltered parent rocks, suggestive of the proximal deposition and rapid burial. Slip-roll beddings, gravity flow, Bouma sequences and the (trace) fossil assemblages in the profile indicate that the Shoushangou Formation is mainly a shallow- (semi-)abyssal submarine fan and the lithological information indicates the presence of microfaces including main and lesser water supply channels, interchannels, lobes, natural levees. Furthermore, a narrow continental shelf above the submarine fan and the concentrated zircon age population of the Shoushangou formation suggest that the tectonic background is most likely a retroarc basin. The Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratio (19–24, average 22), the multivariable principal element source identification diagram and the plots of Th/Sc vs. Zr/Sc and Co/Th vs. La/Sc indicate that the source is mainly felsic, with a minor proportion of intermediate rocks. Trace elemental characteristics (e.g., Th, Zr, Sc, Co, Nd, and REE) deomonstrate that the tectonic setting of the Shoushangou Formation is confined by continental arcs. The whole rock Sm–Nd isotopic spectra of the Carboniferous and Permian strata indicate that the Baolidao arc is the main source of central Inner Mongolia. Additionally, the comparison of the Nd model ages and the zircon U–Pb ages of the Baolidao arc and other entities in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is in support of a prolonged subduction of the PAO since ∼510 Ma, suggesting that the Baolidao arc was developed from the southern continental arc of the original South Mongolia microcontinent. The Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation lacustrine successions in the rift Luxi sag, Songliao Basin are characterized by mixed siliciclastic-carbonate-tuffaceous and organic-rich deposits. Ten facies were recognized and were formed in fan delta, delta, littoral-sublittoral lacustrine and deep lacustrine environments. A depositional sequence characterized by significant changes in facies and lake regime has been defined, and is divided into lowstand systems tract (LST), transgressive systems tract (TST), and highstand systems tract (HST) that are separated by sequence boundaries, initial flooding surfaces, and maximum flooding surfaces, respectively. During the LST, the delta and fan delta deposits covered the marginal area and extended into littoral-sublittoral lacustrine and deep lacustrine environments, respectively. During the TST, the areas of delta and fan delta decreased and lake areas increased, and the carbonate-dominated shoals and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate shorelines occupied the edge of the Majiapu highland belt. During the HST, the lake areas further expanded, and the fan delta deposits extended into deep lacustrine environments and formed deposits of underflows and turbidites. A depositional model in the rift lacustrine Luxi sag is proposed, incorporating the effects of tectonics and sediment supply, climate and carbonate production, hydrodynamic conditions, and lake-level fluctuations. During the LST, the active tectonic movement, high input of siliciclastic sediments, and subaerial volcanic eruptions resulted in the wide distribution of mixed siliciclastic-tuffaceous sedimentation. During the TST, the brackish lake water controlled by periodic dry and hot climate facilitated the carbonate deposition in shallow water, and tractional currents onto the lake shore carried sediments to form the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate-tuffaceous facies. During the HST, more humid climate and increased runoff allowed formation of widely distributed, mostly oil shale-rich deposits, and the gravity flows carried the sediments into the deeper part of basin to form the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate-tuffaceous facies. In the preserved successions of clastic lacustrine systems receiving substantial sediment input from fluvial sources, the boundary between delta-plain and delta-front facies belts marks the position of ancient lacustrine shorelines. Placing and predicting the position of this boundary in nearshore lacustrine deposits of the Triassic Yanchang Formation (Ordos Basin, China) is of considerable applied significance, since sandstone deposits of this succession host numerous geological resources; yet, delta-top and delta-front deposits differ fundamentally in terms of sandstone fraction, sandbody geometries, and petrophysical properties. However, established sedimentological criteria for shoreline identification relevant to marine environments are only partially applicable to this lacustrine setting. For example, in lacustrine systems, (i) water salinity can be considerably lower, (ii) tidal processes are negligible, (iii) wave activity is often limited and of local significance (e.g., distal and lateral delta-front fringes; transgressive periods of delta-lobe reworking), (iv) seasonal fluctuations in water chemistry and biogenic productivity may be common, and (v) the rate, frequency and magnitude of oscillations in base level differ from marine counterparts. Collectively, these factors hinder the differentiation of delta-plain and delta-front deposits in the Yanchang Formation. The establishment of effective criteria with which to make such distinction is important for palaeogeographic restorations, and for resource exploration and exploitation. On the basis of detailed sedimentological descriptions of well cores and outcrop exposures of the Yanchang Formation in the southeastern Ordos Basin, sedimentary facies accumulated as part of different sub-environments and facies belts are studied. Delta-plain deposits can be readily differentiated from those of delta-front origin on the basis of criteria relating to sediment texture, sedimentary structures, palaeontological content, well-log profiles, and vertical facies successions. These criteria are summarized and applied to better characterize the deltaic setting and to reconstruct the evolution of lacustrine shorelines during accumulation of the Yanchang Formation, particularly for the northeastern area of the basin. A key outcome of this study is the development of a broadly applicable model for the recognition of sub-environments in river-dominated lacustrine deltaic successions. Holocene inner shelf mud wedges are important paleoenvironmental archives because they typically contain continuous and extensive sedimentary sequences that can document past changes in sedimentary processes at very high temporal resolution. Here we investigate the fine-scale, seismic patterns of the Late Holocene Adriatic Mud Wedge (AMW), along the western Adriatic margin, to understand the processes of river-sea interactions and their effects on sediments distribution. While analyzing high-resolution seismic reflection profiles, we documented variations in the architectural stratal stacking patterns of the AMW, largely related to short-term fluctuations in sediment supply during the last sea level high (ca. 6000 years BP). Analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles revealed that the AMW consists of five clinothems (referred to here as "seismic units" SU1 to SU5) that were roughly dated by calibration with the continuous recovery well PRAD2-4. Each seismic unit is bounded by minor floodplains (H1 to H5), reflecting periods of relative sediment starvation at the margin. Our analysis provides an interpretative tool to differentiate the fluvial contribution of marine remodeling processes during the AMW evolution on millennium to centennial timescales. In addition, small-scale geomorphic features such as erosion surfaces, small distributary channels and terminal lobes were identified to provide information on heterogeneities that may impact an unconventional fine-grained delta reservoir, both in terms of continuity and overall hydrocarbon potential. • We document the Late Holocene evolution of the AMW between Conero Promontory and Gargano Promontory. • The first internal subdivision of the AMW at the intra-clinothem scale for almost its entire extent is presented and analyzed. • Evidence of short-lived phases of advancing and retreat of the AMW at the intra-clinothem scale have been observed. • The competition between sediments from rivers and the redistribution by oceanographic processes sees a progressive increase of the latter over time. • New evidence has enlightened the presence of small-scale, shallow water distributary channels across the AMW. The western Ordos Basin is located at the intersection of multiple tectonic units and is a key area in the restoration of the palaeogeographic pattern of the East Asia region. The stability of the area and well-developed Paleozoic strata in the basin provide ideal conditions for revealing the relationships among the tectonic processes apparent there. However, within the constraints of extensive post-depositional modification, poor-quality seismic data, and a lack of wells, sediment dispersion differences, source attribution, and source-to-sink processes are still unclear. In this study, we integrated sedimentology, mineral, and geochemical data obtained from marine, continental, and marine-continental transition sedimentary environments in the study area in order to reveal the evolution from source-to-sink. The results show that the western Ordos Basin was predominantly supplied by the Alxa block, Yinshan orogenic belt, Qilian orogenic belt, and the North Qinling orogenic belt during the Late Paleozoic era. As a result of the closure of the Paleo Asian Ocean, the Alxa block and Yinshan orogenic belt became the primary source areas to the north, being composed of granite and alkaline basalt and some sedimentary rocks. In the southern area, the Qilian and the Northern Qinling orogenic belts were subjected to the PaleoTethys remnant ocean basin subduction during the Early Permian. Granite and alkaline basalt were the source rocks of the North Qinling orogenic belt, which became the source area during the Shanxi period. The Qilian orogenic belt contains some sedimentary rocks. The continuous uplift of the southern and northern orogenic belts. The tectonic setting of the northern source area transitions from a passive continental margin to an active continental margin with a mixture of continental arc. The tectonic setting of the southern source area transitions from a mixture of passive continental margin and active continental margin to an active continental margin and continental island arc. The climate changes gradually from humid to semi-arid and then to arid, and meanwhile, the sea level shows a decreasing trend, leading to an increasing distance of advancement for each source-to-sink system, and gradually converged in the central and eastern regions of the basin. Tidal and fan delta sandy sediments in the study area were transformed into fluvial delta sandy sediments in the northern two source-to-sink systems. Tuffaceous material of the Lower Triassic Baikouquan Fm., NE Junggar Basin is closely associated with detrital particles and particularly with crenulated quartz grains and kaolinite. The amount tuff is reduced closed to the source area. The main component of the tuffaceous interstitial material is SiO 2 , followed by K 2 O, FeO, and MgO. The tuffaceous interstitial material can be further divided into three types: medium (basic) potassium-rich tuffaceous material, ultrabasic iron-magnesium tuffaceous material, and ultrabasic iron-magnesium rich tuffaceous material. Medium (basic) potassium-rich is dominated by fusiform shrinkage pores, often associated with kaolinite, while ultrabasic iron-magnesium rich tuff pores are not developed, and ultrabasic iron-magnesium tuffaceous material is dominated by dissolution pores. The solution pores have large diameters and large volume of pores and throats, but low pores and throats coordination number. The pore size and the pores and throats volume of shrinkage fractures are small, but the pores and throats coordination number are large. Dissolution pores are mainly distributed in Mbr 1, whereas shrinkage pores mainly occur in Mbr 2. However, the interlayer productivity data from a single well show that the Mbr 1 has a higher productivity than Mbr 2. In addition, tuff is not responsible for wind action, but the cause of intermittent water flow transport in volcanic rocks. Distributary channels at the fan delta front comprise the dominant facies for development of tuffaceous interstitial materials. The composition of tuffaceous interstitial material clearly determines reservoir quality. Medium basic potassium-rich tuff has a high SiO 2 content and is prone to devitrification, so it is dominated by shrinkage pores, whereas ultrabasic iron-magnesium tuff contains FeO and MgO and is vulnerable to acid corrosion and the formation of corrosion pores. However, acid minerals such as kaolinite reduce reservoir connectivity. Compared with solution pores, shrinkage pores have a small pore volume, but high pores and throats coordination number, indicating that they have a high seepage capacity. Turbidite strata are common along faulted margins of half-graben lacustrine basins, but complex lobe evolution may cause significant variability and uncertainty in the spatial distribution of turbidite sand bodies. This study integrates core samples, seismic and well log data from the Dongying Depression lacustrine basin in East China, and uses these data as inputs to a reduced-complexity stratigraphic forward model of turbidite fan lobe evolution. Data-unconstrained sensitivity analysis is used to investigate sensitivity of fan-lobe spatial distribution to fault-related subsidence rate, basin-margin slope, sediment input volume, and sediment input volume oscillation period. A data-constrained multiple-scenario approach then varied parameters within defined uncertainty ranges to generate a series of best-fit models to predict optimal reservoir presence locations. Results indicate that syn-rift segmentation of the Shengbei fault leads to spatial and temporal variation of fault-related subsidence in the hanging wall basin. External controls exert systematic impact on the spatial distribution of both smaller-scale flow beds and larger-scale fans on basin floor. Higher rates of fault-related subsidence and smaller sediment input volume produce more laterally confined fan lobe distribution. Higher basin-margin slope gradient produces more laterally clustered turbidites, but does not change fan lobe location, indicating break of slope is a more significant control on fan location. Channel-feeding fan deltas without any conglomerates have recently been discovered on the steep slope in the Albert basin at the northern end of the west branch of the East African Rift. However, the new deposition system's mechanics and patterns are unknown. To reveal the sedimentary process of the distinctive fan delta, we integrate forward stratigraphic modeling (FSM) technology with interpretations of the core, well logs, and 3D seismic data. Firstly, a reference FSM model is constructed to describe the evolution of the fan delta, taking into account initial bathymetry, source supply, lake level, and fluvial discharge as independent variables. Then, the Orthogonal Experimental Design (OED) is employed based on the uncertainty analysis of each independent factor to generate FSM multi-realizations for formation thickness and Net-to-Gross. Sensitivity analysis of Multi-FSM realizations reveal that source supply is the most influential variable affecting formation thickness and texture. Combined with the tectonic evolution of Albert Basin, the formation dip during the deposition period is much smaller than present. Multiple incised channels were formed in the provenance area, which became the primary source system of the fan delta, facilitating the sediments' transportation over a certain distance to produce well-developed cross-bedding sandstone. The channel-feeding fan delta has a narrower plain and wider front, and the principal sand body is high-quality distributary channel. The discovery of the channel-feeding fan delta without any gravel formed on the steep slope of the rift basin enriches the theory of deposition in rift basins. The seismic architecture of a tuff-dominated volcanic complex and the associated carbonate systems in the Upper Cretaceous Taylor Group (Anacacho Limestone) Elaine field in South Texas was examined using a three-dimensional seismic dataset. The investigation demonstrates that the combination of traditional seismic lithofacies analysis and seismic sedimentology allows the visualization and interpretation of volcanic elements and penecontemporaneous carbonate lithofacies at the scale of tens of meters. A wireline-log based, rock-physics model was analyzed and calibrated using core samples, which link volcanic and carbonate lithofacies to 90°-phase seismic amplitude events. Seismic-velocity effects permit the identification of subtle volcanic lithofacies changes such as low-velocity tuff bodies or high-velocity basalt intrusions. Also, frequency fusion expands seismic visualization of thick lithofacies bodies (e.g., basaltic dykes) to the 100-m range and seismic facies analysis helps understand interrelationships between the components in and adjacent to the volcanic body. Horizontal seismic slices reveal seismic geomorphology at multiple stages of volcanic activity. This investigation reveals three major seismic facies systems (1) a magma-feeder (i.e., plumbing) intrusive system beneath the volcano, including deep faults, dykes and sills, and remnant radial/concentric fault systems; (2) a large (4000–5000 m diameter) volcanic complex consisting of a deep crater (300-m negative feature below the paleo-sea floor), a large mound (200-m positive feature above the paleo-sea floor), multiple secondary craters filled predominantly with tuffs and less common lava flows; and (3) penecontemporaneous carbonate systems including fringing and mound-top shoals and reefs, lagoon and debris fan aprons at the base of the volcanic mounds. The fringing and mound top carbonate systems were probably in water depths less than 20 m whereas for the fan-apron carbonates, water depths are estimated to be about 140–200 m. The characteristics and evolution of different types of channel-complex sets (CCSs) have long attracted attention from both academia and the oil industry. 3D seismic data from the world's largest submarine fan in the Bay of Bengal allow the exploration of morphology, architecture, and evolution of a Pleistocene submarine channel system from inception to abandonment. Four types of architectural elements are recognized, including feeder and distributary channel-complex set (CCS), levees, bend cutoffs, and incised and unincised crevasse splays. Three types of CCSs are recognized: (1) erosional non-leveed CCSs with the lowest values of channel width (W), thickness (T), and cross-sectional area (C a) (mean values of W = 153 m, T = 20 m, and C a = 2613 m2); (2) graded CCSs with the highest values of W , T and C a (mean values of W = 745 m, T = 89 m, and C a = 49183 m2); (3) aggradational leveed CCSs with intermediate values of W , T and C a (mean values of W = 476 m, T = 56 m, and C a = 21968 m2). Graded CCSs and aggradational leveed CCSs have overbank levees, crevasse splays and bend cutoffs, whereas erosional non-leveed CCSs lack these features. Such architectural difference in overbank deposits suggests a channel evolution pattern of initial incision (erosional non-leveed CCSs) and then aggradation (graded and aggradational leveed CCSs), resulting in a pattern of incision-to-aggradation channel evolution. An increase-then-decrease in channel morphometrics (represented by W , T , and C a) from erosional non-leveed CCSs with the lowest mean values of W , T , and C a , to graded CCSs with the highest mean values of W , T , and C a , and finally to aggradational leveed CCSs with the intermediate mean values of W , T , and C a suggest that the incision-to-aggradation channel evolution is related to waxing-then-waning energy cyclicity. Submarine channel turbidity flows during the waxing energy phase became progressively more energetic and increasingly more erosional, producing erosional non-leveed CCSs. Instead, submarine channel turbidity flows during the waning energy phase were more diluted and increasingly more depositional, thereby producing aggradational leveed CCSs. The phase of peak environmental energy was most likely accompanied by most energetic turbidity currents, resulting in graded CCSs. Submarine fans are ubiquitous in modern deep-water environments. Such systems reported in the literature are largely fed by shelf-indented canyons receiving ample fluvial or longshore drift sediment inputs, whereas those nourished by slope-confined canyons far away from terrigenous sediment sources remain poorly understood. Herein, we report such a system, the Yitong submarine canyons – fan apron system (YCFS), from the northern South China Sea. This system was studied using multibeam bathymetric and two-dimensional multichannel seismic data, combined with geological constraints from nearby International Ocean Discovery Program drilling sites. YCFS consists of approximately 12 submarine canyons confined in the lower continental slope of >1200 m water depth, which feed a fan apron in the connecting abyssal plain. The canyons are erosion-dominated, as evidenced by their V-shaped cross-sections with up to 708 m deep incisions. Canyon infillings comprise mass transport deposits and turbidites, and interfluves exhibit features such as landslides, creep-typed sediment waves, and gullies, indicating the canyons and interfluves are dominated by mass transport and turbidity-current processes. The fan apron is generally depositional, in which channels and channel-levee complexes, turbidite lobes, and mass transport deposits comprise the main depositional elements. In the canyon-to-fan transitions, supercritical turbidity current features and bedforms, including plunge pools and connected sediment mounds, cyclic steps, and antidunes, are developed, which are linked to the deceleration and hydraulic-jump effects of the high-velocity turbidity currents shedding off the canyons. Seismic stratigraphic analysis revealed that YCFS was initiated in Late Miocene. The formation and maintenance of YCFS are linked to the long-term existence of an upslope margin-parallel basement high. The latter could have maintained a steep slope condition (up to 6.5°) that favors the development of canyons and supercritical turbidity currents. The discovery of the super-giant Coral and Mamba gas fields in the offshore of Northern Mozambique provides a unique insight into the architecture of a new deep-water play-type. High-quality seismic and extensive well data from both fields shows that very clean (clay matrix-poor) sandstone reservoirs, with thickness >100 m and extended over tens of km can be formed by the syndepositional interaction of down-slope high-density turbulent gravity flows and across-slope bottom currents. This is recorded by: i) the marked asymmetry of submarine channels and lateral stacking in which top-of-fan seismic reflectors show a lateral transition from high to low amplitude response from axis to off-axis locations; ii) the occurrence of laterally-deviated lobe deposits, sediment waves and channel-associated drifts in the inferred bottom current direction; iii) the presence of very clean sandstones forming the bulk of the fan units and the consistent lack of interbedded fine-grained facies; iv) the occurrence of fine-grained and thin-bedded facies adjacent to the main fan axes, which are characterized by repeated transitions between ripples and parallel-laminated sandstones, mud-drapes, shale clasts and bi-directional cross-laminae in the same bed, indicating intense traction and velocity pulsations. This association forms a mixed depositional system, in which only the basal and coarse-grained part of the turbidity current load is deposited and preserved in the axial part of the system, whilst all the finer-grained sediments are pirated from the turbulent cloud by laterally flowing bottom currents and deposited in the adjacent sediment drifts. The inferred process results in exceptionally high quality reservoirs whose architectural and facies models were confirmed by the appraisal campaign and production well tests and incorporated into the reservoir model. In recent years, shallow-marine fans have attracted considerable attention because they may serve as valuable targets in hydrocarbon exploration. By integrating 3-D seismic, well log, core, and other measured data, this study analyzed the sedimentary characteristics and factors controlling the deposition of shallow-marine fans in Member #1 of the Huangliu Formation in the Yinggehai Basin. Four depositional elements were recognized in the channel-lobe complexes (CLCs), channel-fill sandy debrites, channel-fill turbidites, sand-rich lobe deposits and mud-rich lobe deposits. The channel-fill sandy debrites, which are characterized by low root-mean-square (RMS) amplitude in plan view and deep V-shaped reflections in seismic profile, are commonly located in the internal regions of CLCs. They have widths ranging from 1 to 2 km and single sandbody thicknesses exceeding 25 m. A cored interval from a channel-fill sandy debrite comprising several ungraded sand units revealed massive fine-grained sandstones with floating mud clasts and muddy rip-up clasts. In contrast, the channel-fill turbidites are characterized by low or high RMS amplitude in plan view and shallow V-shaped or vermiform-shaped reflections in profile. They have a small-size frontal splay at the terminus, thus forming a lobe-channel-lobe depositional style. The width of a channel-fill turbidite is usually less than 0.5 km, and the single sandbody thickness is no more than 20 m. A cored interval of channel-fill turbidite consisted of very fine-grained sandstones containing incomplete Bouma subdivisions T a –T b. The sand-rich and mud-rich lobe deposits are characterized by high RMS amplitude and low RMS amplitude with continuous sheet reflection patterns, respectively. The deposition of the shallow-marine fans was significantly influenced by sea-level fluctuations and paleogeomorphology. When sea level fell rapidly, gravity flows with higher erosive energy and velocity tended to form widely developed large-scale channel-fill sandy debrites and sand-rich lobe deposits. When sea level rose, small-scale channel-fill turbidites were dominant because of relatively decreased gravity flow energy. Distinct variations of reservoir characteristics, including mean grain size, mud content, and pore-throat radius, were controlled by sea-level fluctuations. From the period of rapid sea-level fall to the period of rising sea level, the gravity flows may have been increasingly diluted due to sufficient mixing with ambient seawater, resulting in a gradual transformation from sandy debris flows into turbidity currents. In addition, changes in gradient caused by irregular paleogeomorphology may have significantly triggered different depositional styles. With a steeper gradient, the CLC is dominated by a channelized-lobe depositional style; however, a lobe-channel-lobe depositional style prevails under a gentler gradient condition. Taking the reservoir characteristics and depositional styles into consideration, it is suggested that the sandy debrites, with better physical properties, constitute favorable hydrocarbon reservoir intervals. The geomorphological evolution and sediment dispersal processes of the Liaodong Bay Depression (LBD), a strike-slip and extensional composite basin in the Dongying Formation, were studied using 3D seismic, drilling, and logging data in an attempt to understand the diversity of sand-controlling factors and the complexity of the sand dispersal processes. The LBD was mainly supplied by sediments from the eastern side, which originated in the Yanshan Fold system (comprising the Dashi River, Liugu River, and Lin River systems) and sediments from the western side, which originated from the Jiaoliao Uplift system (comprising the Daqing River and Fuzhou River systems). Different sediment provenances had various sediment supply capacities depending on the composition of the source rocks. Sediments were injected into the basin through the channels identified from two interpreted southwest-to northwest-orientated seismic sections. Strata of the Dongying Formation could be divided into three sequences, and comprised shallow-deep lacustrine deposits, braided river delta deposits, fan delta deposits, and sublacustrine fan deposits. Based on the established sequence stratigraphic framework, the strata thickness distribution and sequence of geomorphological evolution could be restored from 3D seismic data of the LBD. By analyzing the distribution and migration of depocenters and the distribution of channels, sediment pathways in the basin could be determined under high flux sediment supply. In terms of five interpreted seismic sections from north to south, we demonstrated that in addition to immense changes in tectonic depositional style in the eastern areas of the basin, the sediment dispersal processes in different areas exhibited prominent discrepancies in sediment accumulations from diverse depositional systems. Zeolite minerals are widely developed in clastic rock reservoirs around the world, and their behavior during diagenetic evolution affects the performance of the reservoirs. Zeolite can fill the primary intergranular pores in a cemented manner and can also undergo alteration and postdissolution to increase pores during the diagenesis process, while quantitative research is still quite limited at present. For this purpose, this paper takes the typical zeolite-rich Jiamuhe Formation (P 1 j) in the deep layer of the Shawan Sag, Junggar Basin, as an example and carries out a series of sedimentological, petrological, mineralogical and geochemical analyses to quantitatively evaluate the effect of zeolite alteration on the reservoir. The results indicate that the deep P 1 j reservoir contains fan-delta facies sandstone and conglomerate, and its storage space is mainly zeolite intercrystalline pores and remaining intergranular pores. The zeolite mineral type is almost all laumontite, with very low analcite and heulandite contents (<1%). The volcanic glass provided by the medium–basic volcanic rock debris (andesite and corresponding tuff), with the continuous increase in temperature and the supply of alkali metal ions, is eroded into laumontite via clinoptilolite and heulandite. In the process of zeolite alteration, zeolite minerals appear as zonal characteristics in the vertical direction. The intercrystalline pores formed by the dehydration of zeolite minerals are the most important factors for the development of high-quality deep reservoirs. Based on a large number of statistical analyses of zeolite cementation and intercrystalline pores within the cementation, a unit change of zeolite can cause a unit change in the intercrystalline pores of 22.16%. Supposing that the laumontite mineral content of the reservoir is 30%, the porosity can be increased by 6.6%. This can provide theoretical guidance for the change in the porosity of zeolite alteration in zeolite-rich reservoirs under similar backgrounds and improve the academic understanding of this point, which is exceedingly crucial. For instance, the Permian sand-conglomerate reservoirs in the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin also have similar zeolite alteration pathways, and the porosity can be quantitatively increased by 8.8% (the zeolite cementation is approximately 40%). Mass transport complexes often form key elements of petroleum systems, affecting sedimentary structures, seepage pathways and biodiversity hotspots on the seafloor. Yet, the feedback and interaction between these elements is not well constrained. This study investigates the modes of gas accumulation, migration, and seepage at the toe of Palmahim Disturbance (PD), a major salt-rooted mass transport complex across the southeastern Mediterranean margin, and adjacent edge of the eastern deep-sea fan of the Nile. Interpretation of a 3D time migrated seismic reflection dataset was calibrated with visual seafloor observations of active seepage. The toe of PD, in the eastern part of the study area, comprises four km-scale NE-SW oriented bathymetric ridges. At the crests of the eastern three of these ridges are six, hundreds-of-meters wide pockmark systems, four of which host verified seeps. Multiple sub-circular tens-of-meters wide pockmarks are mapped in the Nile fan west of PD. Active seepage was also identified within two elongate pockmarks along the flanks of the bordering Levant Channel. The seismic data reveal that the PD toe pockmarks and ridges overlie anomalous high amplitude seismic reflections (HASRs) from just beneath the surface to hundreds-of-meters deep intervals - below, at the base of and within a buried paleo mass transport deposit (MTD). These HASRs are interpreted to represent multiple gas-bearing intervals within thrust-faulted and folded blocks and their intermittent sealing, primarily at the base of the MTD. The Nile fan pockmarks overlie pervasive sub-seafloor HASRs that are overlain by low amplitude reflections, interpreted as gas-bearing channel-lobe sediments. Gas migration occurs via lateral to updip flow within depositional features and deeper folded sediments, and via sub-vertical flow, associated with the formation and leakage of transient reservoirs. Extension of fan sediments towards the PD pockmarks suggests additional updip focusing of gas, complementing sub-vertical gas flow to the PD pockmarks. • 3D seismic and seafloor observations characterize gas seepage at the toe of a slide complex and an adjoining deep-sea fan. • Diverse gas migration, accumulation, sealing, and seepage patterns were observed. • In the deep-sea fan domain seepage is primarily focused laterally by buried paleo channel lobe systems. • In the toe domain seepage is structurally focused to fold crestswith multiple leaky seals forming transient reservoirs. • In both, gas migration combines lateral up-dip flowwithin units and transient sub-vertical breaching across lithologies. Abstract The Ledong Submarine Fan in the western Qiongdongnan Basin runs parallel to the continental slope, with an area of over 10,000 km2 and maximum thickness of greater than 2000 m. Using bulk rare earth element (REE) compositions of the sediments and detrital zircon U-Pb age data, we analysed the provenance of the Ledong Submarine Fan and its regional tectonic implications. The zircon grains in the Ledong Submarine Fan show a wide range of shapes, from prismatic crystals to oval grains with mostly rounded corners, indicating the long transport distance of these zircon grains prior to deposition. The zircon ages have a wide range from 27 to 3006 Ma, with five major age peaks at ca. 27 Ma, 88 Ma, 256 Ma, 415 Ma and 785 Ma, along with a number of subordinate age peaks at ca. 1024 Ma, 1376 Ma, 1879 Ma and 2374 Ma. These age distribution patterns are similar to those from the Red River at Yen Bai. The total REE content range is between 87.72 and 210.38 mg/g in the Ledong Submarine Fan. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns show light REE (LREE) enrichment and weakly negative Eu anomalies, which are similar to those in the Red River at Hanoi. The evidence from zircon U-Pb ages and REE geochemistry indicates that the provenance of the Ledong Submarine Fan is the Red River System. The development of the Ledong Submarine Fan indicates that a rapid subsidence occurred in the western Qiongdongnan Basin during the late Miocene, and the strike slip reversal of the Red River Fault from sinistral to dextral motion was the key factor that induced gravity flow to form the Ledong Submarine Fan. Submarine fan architecture has long been considered much complicated as controlled by both allogenic and autogenic mechanisms. However, to which extent the allogenic sea-level change controls the submarine fan architecture is still unclear. This study uses integrated 3-D seismic, well-log and core data to characterize the submarine fan architecture in a deepwater sequence of the Niger delta basin. Correlation of the timing of architecture units to high-frequency sea-level curve helps to investigate the sea-level control on architecture distribution and evolution of submarine fan systems. The studied sequence is a 3rd-order sequence that formed during 12.5–10.5 Ma and contains a lowstand systems tract (LST) and a transgressive-highstand systems tract (TST-HST). We find that the LST develops a single channel system that is terminated by a lobe system; whereas the TST-HST develops two mutually incised channel systems and mudflow deposits, which are distinct from the conventional condensed sections and interpreted to result from the repeated 4th-order sea-level cycles during the TST-HST of the 3rd-order sequence. Single submarine fan systems, which last for ∼0.3–0.6 Myr, are assumed to form in response to single 4th-order sea-level cycles since they are well correlated with each other. Each single submarine fan system contains several vertically stacked complex sets, which are well correlated with 5th-order sea-level cycles that last for ∼0.1–0.2 Myr, suggesting their potential genetic links. Different complex sets in a single submarine fan system exhibit variable architectural features, which are interpreted to result from the evolution of gravity-flow types as the 4th-order sea-level fluctuates. Thus for the Niger system, at time scales >0.1 Myr, the allogenic sea-level change is considered to have played a major role in controlling the submarine fan architecture at the scale of submarine fan systems and complex sets, whereas autogenic effects on the submarine fan architecture may increase and become dominant on time scales <0.1 Myr. Although hydrocarbon gases are widely distributed in the shallow strata of marine deep-water areas, it is generally believed that these shallow gases have little potential to form large gas accumulations due to unfavorable conditions, especially for effective trap development. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the latest geological exploration data of the deep-water areas of the Qiongdongnan Basin, this study reports a large lithologic trap that developed in the shallow Ledong Formation with burial depths of 200–600 m below the seafloor (mbsf). Systematically, this work investigates the development model of the trap and its gas accumulation mechanism. The results indicate that during the Pleistocene, sediment mainly from the southern Kunsong Uplift was transported to the Qiongdongnan Basin due to confined canyon geomorphology and developed a large channelized submarine fan in the deep-water areas. The roof of the submarine fan was cut and eroded and laterally sealed by overlying muddy channels, resulting in a dome-shaped structure, which was further covered by the Pleistocene tight mudstones forming the Ledong lithologic trap. The Yacheng coal-measure source rocks in the deep-water areas had high gas yields, which resulted in increased pressures and promoted deep gas migration into shallow reservoirs along a combined migration pathway including sand strata, structural ridges, faults, fissures, and gas chimneys. The gas accumulated in the Ledong trap as a result of the decreases in temperature and pressure. After the deep gases charged the Ledong strata, migration was blocked by the overburden consisting of Pleistocene tight mudstones, whose seal capacity was significantly enhanced by overlying gas hydrates in the deep-water areas. Meanwhile, the seawater in deep-water areas compacts the underlying cap rocks through its own weight, which enhances the seal capacity of cap rocks. In shallow reservoirs, thermogenic gases may mix with microbial gases from shallow marine source rocks, and some thermogenic gases may be reformed by microorganisms to form secondary microbial gases. The shallow Ledong gas reservoir connects the underlying gas reservoirs and the overlying gas hydrate reservoirs and vertically consists of a continuous hydrocarbon enrichment zone, which significantly expands exploration targets in the deep-water areas of the Qiongdongnan Basin. Geological and seismic data have been integrated to describe the impact of structural and sedimentological heterogeneities on fluid dynamics for one of the reservoirs (Reservoir X) of the Akpo field (deep offshore of Niger Delta). Akpo is a sinuous 4-way anticline formed because of strong deformation occurring within the over pressurized shales of the Akata Formation. Weak deformation may have started since 9 Ma; however, most of the strain associated with shortening was accumulated between ca 7 Ma and ca 3 Ma. The cumulative shortening has been estimated in the order of 4% (ca 400 m). From 3 Ma (during the latest stages of growth of the Akpo anticline) up to Present-day, the residual strain was taken up by oblique (right lateral strike-slip component) extensional faults, between 2 km and ca 15 km in length, organized into two main trends: N-dipping, ENE-WSW to NE-SW striking faults, and NNW-SSE striking faults mainly dipping to the east. These faults are segmented and have a maximum throw in the order of 70 m. Based on the architectural elements identified in this work, the Reservoir X of the Akpo field has been subdivided into three main intervals: a basal lobe (Interval 1a) and a related channel (Interval 1 b); two intermediate generations of meandering channels (Interval 2a and 2 b); and an upper and strongly erosional constructive channel (Interval 3). The 4D signal has been integrated to better understand the complex fluid flow within Reservoir X in time and space. The extensional faults play a role in baffling mainly in the central part of the field, where across-fault flow is likely to occur in correspondence with the spill points. Facies distribution and the nature of the contact between various reservoir intervals are also important because vertical and lateral communication between sand bodies can be complex. Levees or mud barriers can inhibit flow, impacting both efficiency of support between injectors and producers. On the other hand, sand-to-sand communication due to the strong erosional character of the contacts enhances dynamic connectivity between sands belonging to different reservoir intervals. As an example, even if sands belonging to Interval 3 totally erode (i.e. dynamically isolate) those of Interval 2 in the southern part of the field, in the northern sector the two reservoir intervals are in (vertical) communication as suggested by the 4D signal. Meteoric water flushing into deep-marine environments is a topic of debate since the actual transport mechanism remains elusive. In order to evaluate the potential impact of meteoric water on early diagenesis of deep-marine sandstones, two submarine fan sandstone reservoirs, the Eocene Frigg (Frigg oilfield) and the Palaeocene Heimdal (Grane field) that have the same source area, were compared and contrasted. Petrographic studies reveal that both sandstone reservoirs are at the eodiagenesis stage (<70 °C) at the present day. However, the Eocene Frigg sandstones are characterized by geological features suggestive of potential meteoric water diagenesis, such as dissolution and kaolinization of the silicate grains, whereas the Palaeocene Heimdal sandstones show negligible alteration. The δ13C V-PDB and δ18O V-PDB values of siderites in the Eocene Frigg sandstones range from +5.2‰ to +16.7‰, and from −8.2‰ to −6.6‰, respectively, indicating siderite formation during methanogenesis in meteoric pore water. Results from generic hydrogeochemical modelling scenarios lend further support to the hypothesis of meteoric water flushing. Thus, we suggest that massive meteoric water might have been brought into the Frigg turbidite sands by basinward migration of the meteoric water. This occurred because the East Shetland Platform experienced two stages of relative sea-level fall (during and at the end of the Eocene, Priabonian), and flushing might have taken place via connected incised canyons. The location of the Frigg sands deposited immediately below the Shetland escarpment and the narrow palaeo-shelf area may have facilitated such meteoric water incursions. The investigations of the processes occurring in submarine fans improve the understanding of intricacies of deepwater turbidity system and their associated developed architectural elements. The seismic patterns and depositional geometries of the channel levee complexes of the Indus fan have been studied using 2D/3D seismic and well data. The Indus fan is the second largest submarine fan in the world, with a horizontal extent of some 1500 km and a thickness of approx. 9 km. The development source of the Indus fan is divided into two units primarily based on their stratigraphic architecture and depositional characteristics. Firstly, the Eocene-Oligocene to Miocene lower unit that is built of channel lobes, and regionally developed large mass-transport deposits including megaturbidites. The other unit is Miocene and the Quaternary upper part that constitute major channel levee complexes with minor intercalations of locally developed mass transport deposits. The former progressively increase in thickness and width upwards the Eocene-Oligocene to Quaternary. This gave rise to symmetrical and asymmetrical growth patterns as a result of multiple phases of erosion and deposition. Such an architecture is present at an extensive scale primarily in the Plio-Pleistocene channels where the vertical to lateral growth ratio is higher than the channels. A single episode of thick MTDs is recognized by seismic reflection geometries suggesting sea level fluctuations that occurred between the Eocene-Oligocene and the Miocene, and from the Pliocene and the Quaternary channels. Regional confinements drastically affected the development of the Indus fan from the Eocene-Oligocene to Miocene, diminishing from the Pliocene-Quaternary. Sediment zonation occurred owing to the presence of structural confinements that controlled the growth of channel levee complexes and in general the entire Indus fan. Our results based on seismic reflection data of channel levee complexes suggest that increasing but alternating sediment supply from Eocene till Plio-Pleistocene, assisted the active channels and levee growth. Intrabasinal subaqueous uplifts around small positive structural units are important targets of high-quality reservoirs in the Eocene Bohai Bay Basin (BBB). The western BBB was filled with sediments from northern and southern source regions. The southern sources are the Paleozoic rocks deposited in marine and costal settings, which are widely exposed along the Chengzikou uplift and stacked with Mesozoic igneous rocks. The northern sources are pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks from the western Shaleitian uplift. To determine the origin of the Eocene sediments in the intrabasinal subaqueous uplift, eight sediment samples were collected from drill cores in the Shaxinan structural belt of Shanan sag, western BBB for detrital zircon U–Pb dating. We conduct detrital zircon U–Pb dating to shed new light on Eocene provenance evolution and analyze sediment dispersal characteristics of the lacustrine beach-bar sandstones by integrating lithology, wire-line logs and 3-D seismic data in the Shaxinan structural belt. The obtained ages vary between the Archaeological and Mesozoic (2692 ± 42 Ma to 79.8 ± 1.0 Ma). Dominant provenance for the Shahejie Formation has evolved temporally, that is, from the early Shaleitian uplift to the late Chengzikou uplift. The beach-bar sand bodies developed on the subaqueous uplift in the Shahejie Formation (from base to top: member 3 of the Shahejie Formation, Es 3 , and members 1 and 2 of the Shahejie Formation, Es 12), while the gravel-rich fan delta-beach bar sand bodies mainly from the northern Shaleitian uplift in the Es 3 transitions to the mixed sand-mud braided delta-beach bar sand bodies mainly influenced by southern Chengzikou uplift in the Es 12. Submarine fans in tectonically active continental-slope basins are targets of petroleum exploration and production. These slope fans commonly comprise compensationally stacked sandy and muddy architectural elements, including mass-transport deposits, weakly confined to distributary channel-and-lobe deposits, and leveed-channel deposits. The lateral continuity and vertical connectivity of these architectural elements are important uncertainties in reservoir characterization that influence fluid-flow behavior during hydrocarbon production. Here, we use a simple forward stratigraphic model to simulate the stratigraphic patterns and illuminate the likely distribution of fine-scale, sub-seismic heterogeneity in a slope fan. We used published seismic-reflection horizons from the tectonically active Columbus basin, offshore Trinidad, to define the top and base of a Pleistocene submarine fan. We then simulated the stratigraphic evolution of the slope fan with a series of DionisosFlow™ forward stratigraphic models. All variables were kept constant during the simulations in order to test the hypothesis that the autogenic evolution of the surface topography alone, as a result of erosion and deposition, can produce compensational-stacking patterns common in submarine fans. A reference-case model is similar to the thickness trend of published isochron maps of the Trinidad slope fan. The reference-case model also produced patterns of compensational stacking. Varying the time step impacts the heterogeneity of the model. Shorter time steps are characterized by less sediment accumulation, which results in less sediment diversion during the subsequent time step, more gradual migration of channel deposits, shorter offset distances of depocenters, and shorter length-scale heterogeneity compared to longer time steps. Thus, a key characteristic of slope-fan deposits is autogenic compensational stacking, without any external forcing, which governs heterogeneity in these reservoirs. Furthermore, our results suggest that relatively simple diffusion-based models can produce realistic compensation patterns and future work will be focused on higher-resolution model calibration to seismic-reflection data and the influence of input variables on heterogeneity of channel-and-lobe deposits of slope fans. Hybrid beds, the deposits of sediment gravity flows that show evidence for more than one flow regime (turbulent, transitional and/or laminar), have been recognized as important components of submarine lobe deposits. A wide range of hybrid bed types have been documented, however, quantitative analysis of the stratigraphic and geographic distribution of these enigmatic bed types is rare. Here, extensive exposures integrated with research borehole data from Unit A of the Laingsburg Formation and Fan 4 of the Skoorsteenberg Formation, Ecca Group, South Africa, provide the opportunity to examine geographical and stratigraphic patterns over a range of hierarchical scales. For this purpose, >23,000 individual beds have been evaluated for deposit type and bed thickness. On average, hybrid beds make up < 5% of all events and <10% of the cumulative thickness. Lobe complex 1 (LC1) of Fan 4,Skoorsteenberg Formation, preserves a prominent geographical trend of hybrid beds becoming more prevalent towards the frontal fringes of a lobe complex (up to 33.2% of beds), whereas their proportion in proximal and medial lobe complex settings is <10%. Data from Unit A, Laingsburg Formation, show hybrid beds are less common in the basal (A.1) and top (A.6) subunits compared to A.2-A.5 in both core data sets. The bases and tops of some lobe complexes (A.2, A.3 and A.5.7) are observed to be slightly enriched in hybrid beds, whereas others (A.5.1, A.5.5 and A.6.1) show no hybrid beds in their bases, which does not conform to expected allogenically-driven distributions that predict more hybrid beds during the initiation of lobe complexes. Instead, the occurrence and distribution of hybrid beds in lobe complexes are interpreted to be controlled by autogenic processes, including flow transformation processes on the basin-floor meaning enrichment in frontal lobe fringe settings. Therefore, the 1D distribution of hybrid beds in lobe complexes reflects the dominant stacking pattern of lobes within a lobe complex, with enrichment at the base and top of lobe complexes due to overall progradational to retrogradational stacking patterns. Individual lobes show a wide range of hybrid bed distributions, due to stacking patterns of the component lobe elements. These findings highlight the importance of autogenic processes rather than allogenic controls in the distribution of hybrid beds, which has implications for reservoir evaluation and the assessment of lobe stacking patterns in 1D core data sets. Advanced seismic data and multi-attribute visualization techniques, such as color blending of attributes, have considerably enhanced the capability of interpreters to characterize geological features in three-dimensional (3D) seismic reflection datasets. However, high resolution investigation of complex, vertically linked geological features such as channel systems and fluid conduits, remains challenging. These features may appear in the dataset as pronounced attribute anomalies, such as high-amplitude or spectrally or structurally enhanced seismic reflectivity bands, at several depth levels. Vertical linkages between these features, however, may not be readily established. We have developed an innovative method, Multilevel Composition, for an intuitive display of vertically connected features. Our method involves the composition of attribute maps from three different depth/time windows or slices onto a single map, in which inter-window/layer depth information is coded in colors. Multilevel Composition starts with the identification of suitable seismic attributes, such as high amplitudes in the examples displayed here, to map features of geological interest. At least one reference horizon is then identified and mapped in the vicinity of the target window of interest. Three sub-windows are then defined with respect to the reference horizon(s) based on the vertical and spatial distribution of the geological features. Relevant seismic attributes are computed for each of the sub-windows, and the resulting maps, one from each sub-window, are assigned basic color channels and are co-rendered to reveal multilevel linkages between these features. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by applying it to two 3D seismic datasets, one illuminating deep-water depositional elements in the eastern Nile fan, eastern Mediterranean and the other targeting seafloor seeps and underlying gas migration systems beneath the Omakere Ridge, offshore New Zealand. Hybrid event beds (HEBs) record disequilibrium in submarine fan evolution attributed to mud-forced dampening turbulence, which could be caused by allogenic and autogenic forcings in either the proximal or distal segment of a lobe-dominated submarine fan on several timescales. Detailed field investigation combined with petrographic and mineralogical analysis of selected outcrop samples indicate that the Upper Triassic submarine fan succession mainly comprises turbidites, HEBs, and debrites in the West Qinling (WQ) area of NE Tibetan Plateau. Five types of HEBs are recognized based on the thickness, sedimentary structure, and texture. Bed-by-bed description and measurement reveal that these HEBs show a distinct distribution pattern throughout the submarine fan succession, including dominance of HEB-1 and HEB-2 beds (∼71.50%) in distributary channel to lobe off-axis (FA1–FA3) and significant portion of HEB-3 to HEB-5 beds (∼54.22%) in lobe fringe to lobe distal fringe environments (FA4–FA5). Textural and petrographic characteristics of mudclasts suggest disaggregation of heterolithic, homogenous and less cohesive mudclasts (MC-1 to MC-4 type) within H1b and H3 interval of HEBs, which could play different roles in the longitudinal mud-driven flow transformation between turbulent and laminar flow behavior patterns. The vertical distributions of the HEB-prone succession are characterized by four types of depositional scenarios, which yields significant allogenic and autogenic signatures combined with the recognition of the dominant HEB types and thickening- or thinning-upward trend of the vertically stacked submarine lobes. The morphological characteristics of a submarine channel system, within buried intra-slope mini-basins in the offshore Niger Delta have been investigated on 3D seismic data. The studied submarine channel named Amaku Channel Levee System (ACLS) initiated after avulsion of a feeder channel called Amaku Major System (AMS). The ACLS runs across three folds (A, B, and C), related to mobile shale deformation, being underlain by mass transport complexes (MTCs), lobes, and levees. From three defined channel reaches (upper, middle, and lower reaches), we have used seismic facies description, channel architecture characterization and quantitative analyses to decipher the spatial and temporal evolution of the channel levee system. Our results reveal that the western channel margin was controlled by structural barriers associated with mobile shale deformation, while the eastern channel margin was influenced by depositional barriers linked to levees and mass transport complexes (MTCs). We argue that the depositional barriers are in some cases more efficient than the structural barriers in controlling channel pathways, since pre-channel sediments confine the channel elements and divert them against positive reliefs. Seismic observations show that channels migrate from folds to structural lows causing flow stripping processes. Downstream variations of morphological parameters (such as sinuosity, width, and levee width), indicate that pre-existing deposits prevented these basin-ward migrations, driving straightening and narrowing of the channel system. Effective seal breaching is a major contributor to methane seepage from deep sea sediments as it ensures the migration of gas and liquid hydrocarbons from buried reservoirs to the seafloor. This study shows two giant pockmarks on the lower slope of the Lower Congo Basin associated with salt-tectonic faulting and the buried Pliocene Congo deep sea fan. The progressive burial of Pliocene fan deposits results in mobilization of methane from gas hydrates at the Base of the Gas Hydrate Stability Zone which migrates through the hemipelagic seal towards the seafloor along salt-induced faults. Seal-breaching in this part of the Lower Congo Basin relies solely on salt-tectonic faulting contrasting with upslope seafloor seepage settings where polygonal faulting within the hemipelagic seal occurs. Dedicated 2D and 3D seismic and acoustic surveying allows the detailed reconstruction of the evolution of pockmarks which appear to have been active for the last 640 kyr. We also show indications that the modern seafloor depression formed due to reduced sedimentation in the vicinity of active seepage. The presented seafloor seepage features illustrate the mode of gas release from the Pliocene fan in the Lower Congo Basin, which contrasts with previously investigated seepage environments further upslope. The seismic stratigraphy, evolution and depositional framework of a sheared-passive margin, the Durban Basin, of South East Africa are described. Based on single-channel 2D seismic reflection data, six seismic units (A-F) are revealed, separated by major sequence boundaries. These are compared to well logs associated with the seismic data set. Internal seismic reflector geometries and sedimentology suggest a range of depositional regimes from syn-rift to upper slope and outer shelf. Nearshore and continental facies are not preserved, with episodic shelf and slope sedimentation related to periods of tectonic-induced base level fall. The sedimentary architecture shows a change from a structurally defined shelf (shearing phase), to shallow ramp and then terminal passive margin sedimentary shelf settings. Sedimentation occurred predominantly during normal regressive conditions with the basin dominated by the progradation of a constructional submarine delta (Tugela Cone) during sea-level lowstands (LST). The study area is located at the east of Tuz Gölü Basin, one of the sedimentary basins in the Central Anatolia basins between Ş. Koçhisar and Karapınar town. The main subject of study is based on the Boyalı Formation consisting of braided river deltas and submarine fan deposits with shelf carbonates blocks of the Lower to Middle Eocene. Laboratory analysis showed that porosity and permeability values are between % 1.40–19.40 (average % 9.15) and 0.01–43.95 mD (average 5.07 mD), respectively. The conventional method is compared with the geostatistical image analysis method by rock plug samples parallel to layering for porosity prediction. These samples were saturated with blue resin and made thin sections. The boundaries of the blue areas (mean pores) were lined for pore volume calculation to create solid objects. A proposed empirical mathematical method, geostatistical based, was used to gain porosity values to converge to the laboratory values. Also, in the scope of this study, an architectural, mathematical logic called geostatistical first-order logic architecture (GFOLA) was generated. The geostatistical based programme "GeoST Porosity v.1.0" has been developed for numerical analysis. The empirical approach has been used to transform the areal measurement into volumetric measurement, eliminate the conditions that could not be measured in the 3rd dimension, and positively affects the porosity approach ratio, which is the ratio of empirical to laboratory porosity. In the empirical approach, the porosity is the function of grain size (x), sorting (y) and skewness (z) ∅ = g (x , y , z). To obtain the deviation from the "ideal condition (μ)", the yielded result has been modelled as an attenuation relation " e G f " which is a function of grain texture factor (Gf). A correlation graph of the grain texture factor and porosity approach ratio obtained by the empirical approach has been determined to be applied to siliciclastics. The Sohar Basin, located offshore the East Coast of the Arabian Peninsula, is an area that has seldom been the focus of international oil companies. While all commercial discoveries in the UAE and Oman have been made to the west and south of the Oman Mountains, the Sohar Basin is underexplored and remains prospective. This lack of activity is primarily because the Thamama reservoir, which has yielded huge success to the west of the Oman Mountains is likely not present within the Sohar Basin. However, potential traps, reservoirs, and source rocks are present within the Tertiary succession. The Sohar Basin formed in the late Cretaceous after the obduction of the Semail Ophiolite onto the Arabian Plate. Following a period of tectonic quiescence, which lasted until the Early Eocene, the gravitational collapse occurred along the eastern edge of the present-day Oman Mountains. Interpretation of both 2D and 3D seismic reveals that the subsurface is comprised of three tectonostratigraphic units, defined as pre-, syn-, and post-tectonic packages. North-South trending thrust faults generate distinct mini-basins within the pre- and syn-tectonic sequences. The post-tectonic sequence is defined by the development of prograding systems in a tectonically quiescent margin formed in the Lower Miocene and which persists to the present day. Deep-water depositional systems dominate the undrilled far-east and south of the basin where the presence of submarine canyon systems and associated basin floor fans is supported by 3D seismic data. In recent times, the Sohar Basin has been subject to extensional faulting likely driven by sediment load caused by a prograding delta system. The results of this work reveal that multiple untested play types exist within the Sohar Basin, which are comprised of both structural and stratigraphic elements. This paper integrates both a structural and sequence stratigraphic interpretation to provide insights into the tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Sohar Basin. Lower to Middle Permian strata in the Delaware Basin in southeast New Mexico and West Texas present a unique system to assess spatial and temporal variations in carbonate slopes as well as controls on variation. Detailed subsurface gamma-ray well-log mapping and visualization using approximately 8000 densely spaced well logs in the northern portion of the Delaware Basin aided in correlating and characterizing Wolfcampian and Leonardian (L1-L6 composite sequences) slope profiles. The Wolfcampian strata form irregular slope profiles ranging from 2 to 10°. L1-L2 composite sequences develop comparatively steeper aggradational to retrogradational slopes with maximum mapped gradients between 15 and 25°, platform to basin relief of 920–1100 m, and slope widths of 10–20 km. The L3-L6 composite sequences denote a shift to platform and margin progradation. However these intervals exhibit variable progradational profiles in the along the western slopes with maximum slope gradients between 2 and 10°, progradation aggradation ratios ranging approximately from 10 to 100, wider slope widths reaching over 30 km, and platform to basin relief ranging from 500 to 900 m while northern slopes exhibited more continuous steep gradients between 10 and 20°, progradation-aggradation ratios of 0–13, slope widths of 10–15 km, and average approximate platform to basin relief of 900 m. The broad shift from aggradation-retrogradation to progradation during the Leonardian correlates with low-order sea-level change previously noted from outcrop studies. The eustatic shift likely influenced platform accommodation, driving a regional transition to progradation during low-order highstand. The variation in Leonardian progradation rates is significantly influenced by underlying Pennsylvanian carbonate buildups generating large-scale inflections in the slope and toe-of-slope environments. The underlying feature generated lower platform to basin relief and wider slopes to the west, promoting progradation, and formed narrower slopes with greater platform to basin relief to the north, likely inhibiting rapid progradation. Bottom currents and subsequent drift deposition along the western slopes also changed slope angle and geometry, promoting progradation over and around the features in subsequent units. Also, bottom currents possibly swept sediments from toe of slope environments in the north where drifts aren't present, inhibiting progradation and driving aggradation. The documented spatial and temporal variations in slope profiles may exert significant influence on transport, routing, and confinement of platform-top and slope-derived sediments to the deeper basin, imparting control on basinal stratigraphic architecture. Deposition of the Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group (Gp) in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) occurred during dramatic global climate and regional tectonic change. Key drivers impacting the GoM over this time were 1) significantly enhanced runoff and sediment supply from the developing Laramide hinterland, 2) intense global warming culminating in the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) at ∼56 Ma, and 3) proposed Paleogene restriction of the GoM as Cuba docked with Yucatan-Bahamas-Florida. In this paper, we investigate biological and organic geochemical responses to these drivers across the PETM and identify spatial variations in productivity, oxygenation, and ultimately, ventilation. The PETM has been identified by calcareous nannofossil marker taxa and/or excursion taxa from the genera Rhomboaster and Discoaster that exclusively existed during the event. A calcareous nannofossil transition from cool eutrophic to warm oligotrophic assemblages occurs across the PETM broadly over the GoM suggesting that surface water nutrient supply decreased due to slowing circulation or increased sequestration of nutrients along the margins. Associated radiolarian bursts indicate additional factors, such as eustacy and runoff, may have modulated nutrient supply. Benthic habitats were impacted as agglutinated foraminifera, which were dominant in the Paleocene, disappeared at the PETM over submarine fan environments while calcareous benthic forams remained largely absent until the late Eocene. Deoxygenation may have contributed to benthic ecosystem decline as marine kerogen enrichment is noted broadly in the middle Wilcox and PETM. Total organic carbon is generally <3% except in more isolated marginal settings suggesting that deep-basin dysoxia co-existed with a variably enhanced oxygen minimum. The lithostratigraphic plays in the Dongfang area of the Yinggehai Basin at the northern margin of the South China Sea consist of a Neogene multistage, thinly bedded, channel-lobe system. Integrating high-resolution 3D seismic, lithological and well log data shows that the channel-lobe system developed primarily in the lowstand system tract of the Huangliu Formation. We investigated the developmental stages of lobes based on the stacking relationships of seismic events, the degrees of channel downcutting in lobes, and the occurrences of sandstone facies observed in the stratal slices. The lobes finally identified 9 small-scale stages, which reveal a complete sedimentary cycle controlled by high-frequency sea-level fluctuations. Facies architectures such as main channels, channels and overbank deposits were identified by using seismic sedimentology and geomorphology. Seismic stratal slices display the different characteristics of the sediment dispersal patterns in the northern part (block DF-a) and the southern region (block DF-b). The northern part contains isolated lobes. The southern region mostly contains deeply incised channels and meander belts that are wider than those in the northern part. Three main sediment dispersal patterns have been recognized, namely, channel-lobe, channelized lobe and non-channelized lobe. Sea level fluctuation and topographic variations exert strong influences on spatial-temporal evolution of the sediment diffusion and are the key controlling factors for the patterns. The Late Cretaceous to Late Eocene Rajang Group in Borneo is one of the world's largest deep-sea sedimentary fans. The volume of the Rajang Group cannot be explained by erosion of the Schwaner Mountains in SW Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. To identify other contributing sources, this study examined the provenance history of the Rajang Group and the overlying Tatau Formation. A combination of bulk rock geochemistry, zircon morphological analysis and U–Pb geochronology is used to better constrain the provenance of the Rajang Group. Bulk rock Nd data, supported by detrital zircon data indicates that a late Mesozoic magmatic belt include the Schwaner Mountains was an important source before the Paleocene, after which sediment supply was dominated by older crustal sources, consistent with the Malay Peninsula. The increased contribution from older crustal material is considered to be the consequence of collapse of the magmatic arc and collision between Australian microcontinental fragment(s) and the southern margin of Sundaland. Paleocene river systems that flowed through the Malay Peninsula, transported large amounts of sediments to the marine basins including the deep-sea Rajang Group. Submarine canyons are major conduits for sediment transfer from continental shelf to deep marine environments. Mass failures and faults play a key role in the initiation and evolution of submarine canyons along convergent tectonic margins, in addition to continental sediment supply. Here we analyze high-resolution bathymetry and seismic data from the Colombian southern Caribbean to investigate the controls on submarine canyon morphology along a convergent tectonic margin. We propose three end-member types of canyons: Type I canyons have a direct connection to a major river associated with high sediment supply. These canyons are highly erosive and cut topographic barriers created by tectonic deformation. Type II canyons are associated with faults at the canyon's head, where the location, orientation, and sinuosity are controlled by fault strike. Also, the presence of faults is related to an increase in the occurrence of mass failures from the steep canyon borders, increasing the depth and width asymmetry. Finally, Type III canyons evolve toward the continental shelf edge through retrogressive mass failures. These mass failures produce erosional scars that merge downslope to create submarine canyons in early stages of development, which later evolve to wider but shallow canyons due to the progressive basinward merging. We argue that the morphology of each canyon type is controlled by the interaction between continental sediment supply, mass failures, shelf width, and fault occurrence. We also demonstrate that seafloor topography influences the size of submarine fan deposits at the mouths of canyons. We identified large fan deposits (>650 km2) on the continental rise, whereas in piggyback sub-basins we found smaller fans (<60 km2). In marine sediments, methane hydrate can occur within the methane hydrate stability zone (MHSZ), which extends from the seafloor to a certain depth below it, within which the conditions of pressure and temperature are such that allow their formation and stability. Variations in sea level and in bottom water temperatures (BWTs) have opposite effects on the stability zone: a sea level rise leads to higher hydrostatic pressure, which tends to enlarge the MHSZ, while an increase in temperature tends to shrink it, and vice-versa. When the MHSZ shrinks, methane hydrate dissociates, releasing water and gaseous methane into the sediment pores. If the gaseous methane reaches the seafloor, it will be released into the ocean. In this study, we use numerical modelling to investigate the dynamic response of shallow methane hydrates at 550, 575, 600, 625, 650, 700 and 750 m water depth (mwd), on the Amazon Deep-Sea Fan, Equatorial Atlantic Ocean (near the northern coast of Brazil), to simultaneous sea level and BWTs increases, since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) up to the present. These water depths lie on the feather edge of the MHSZ, where hydrates are most sensitive to pressure and temperature perturbations. The results suggest that the methane hydrate stability decrease caused by the BWTs increases has completely overcome the increase in stability owing to sea level increase, for 550 and 575 mwd. For these two water depths, the MHSZ disappeared in the models and all the hydrate initially present has dissociated. The modelling results indicate that gaseous methane started to be released into the ocean at ca. 17,500 y BP for 550 mwd and at ca. 16,000 y BP for 575 mwd. For the other water depths considered, hydrate stability decrease caused by the BWT increase has only partly overcome the increase in stability due to pressure increase, so that the MHSZs have shrank, but have not totally disappeared in the models. Gaseous methane was released into the ocean from ca. 14,000 y BP to 7000 y BP for 600 mwd. For 625, 650, 700 and 750 mwd, no gaseous methane has been released into the ocean. Submarine fan channel reservoirs exhibit strong heterogeneity not only on channel architecture but also on the qualities of reservoirs, which can exert direct control over the fluid flow and remaining oil distribution during oilfield development. However, the distribution of the variations in the reservoir quality within submarine fan channel systems is poorly understood. This paper, which takes the submarine fan channel reservoirs of the X oilfield in the Niger Delta Basin as an example, aims to study the variations in reservoir qualities and the controlling mechanisms within a sinuous deep-water channel system. The studies are based on the integration of core analysis, well-logging interpretation, seismic inversion and interpretation constrained by channel architecture. The results show that variations in the reservoir quality within a sinuous deep-water channel system are primarily controlled by rock texture, lithofacies (association) and channel architecture under the circumstance of weak diagenesis. (1) The grain sorting and clay content mainly control the reservoir's porosity and permeability, respectively, while the relationship between grain size and the reservoir's properties is complicated because of the strong heterogeneity in the rock textures for different lithofacies. Cross-laminated fine sandstones have the highest porosity because of their good sorting, while massive medium to coarse sandstones have the highest permeability because of their low clay content. (2) Channel fillings are divided into four types (Type I – Type IV), which bear different reservoir qualities according to the lithofacies associations. Within a complete channel system, the channel fill types evolve progressively upward as the dominant gravity flow types evolve, which leads to the vertical differential distribution of porosity and permeability. (3) The relatively high porosity-permeability zones in the plane of a channel belt exhibit two patterns: multiple lenticular strips and single lenticular strips, which are controlled by the channel's architecture. Deep-sea fans are the terminal sinks of clastic sediment, nutrients and pollutants produced in continental landmasses. They are also major targets for oil and gas on continental margins. Several recent studies have applied seismic geomorphology to delineate deep-sea fans, however, most of them describe a relatively short period of the geologic time, disfavoring the observation of long-term geomorphologic changes and the resulting depositional architecture. We analyzed the geomorphologic evolution and architecture of the Maastrichtian, deeply buried, Maricá deep-sea fan in northern Santos Basin, offshore SE Brazil. Using three-dimensional seismic data and logs from three wells, we mapped five horizons (stratal slices), including fan base, fan top and three internal horizons. The examination of lobes and channel networks on each horizon resulted in a timelapse that capture major geomorphologic transformations of the deep-sea fan from inception to abandonment. The Maricá deep-sea fan is a sand-rich system deposited directly onto the irregular topography of the Maricá mass-transport deposit, and its geometry is also influenced by structural highs uplifted by active halokinesis. Six lobes were mapped, which present variable growing patterns and associated stratigraphic signatures indicative of aggradation, progradation, retrogradation, and lateral switching. Four types of channel morphology were identified (straight, sinuous, meandering, and braided-like). Channel length and sinuosity tend to increase with time in the whole fan and within individual lobes. Amplitude maps and well-log motifs suggest that sandy sediments occur mainly as channel-fill deposits and that different channel morphologies produce contrasting stratigraphic architectures and reservoir heterogeneities. Our results show that channel network and sand-body architecture evolve in a predictive fashion mostly controlled by fan aggradation. The Pearl River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea is one of the most important offshore petroliferous basins in China. Specifically, the shelf-edge delta and slope fan systems in the deepwater area of the Baiyun Sag have been regarded as the most important objects for hydrocarbon exploration, and the sequence stratigraphic structure, sedimentary evolution, and "source to sink" relationship between them is an important basis for predicting favorable areas for hydrocarbon exploration. In this study, the sequence stratigraphic structure and sedimentary system of the Late Oligocene Zhuhai Formation in the Baiyun Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin were studied based on a comprehensive dataset that integrated seismic, logging, and core data. A total of four third-order sequences were determined in the second-order composite sequence (CS3) according to nature of unconformities. Within each third-order sequence, the characteristics of different sedimentary systems were successfully identified. Within CS3-1 and CS3-2 the transgressive systems tracts (TST) are relatively thick, and the highstand systems tracts (HST) encompass mainly the outer-shelf deltaic deposits with thin foresets. As for CS3-3 and CS3-4, the lowstand systems tract (LST) and falling-stage systems tracts (FSST) are dominated by shelf-edge deltas and slope fans deposits, whereas the TST are very thin. The depositional evolution and "source to sink" relationship between the shelf-edge deltas and associated slope fans are revealed as follows: there are mainly three stages of shelf-edge deltas, and their sedimentary paleo-water depths were 794.9 m, 822.6 m, and 556.8 m, with progradation angles of 8.5°, 7.7°, and 5.7°, respectively; the thick delta front (200–500 m) and slump deposit are the main identification features of the shelf-edge delta. During the period of LST, although the progradation angle of the shelf-edge delta was the largest, there were few slope fans or only mud-rich slope fan deposits in the front of the delta due to the influence of relative sea-level rise, and during the period of FSST, the slump and redeposition of the delta front sand bodies provided the sand source for the formation of the slope fans, thus forming the sand-rich fans. Open-framework gravels (OFGs) form common lithofacies of alluvial fans. However, inferences of their mechanisms of transport and deposition, and of controls on their distribution in alluvial-fan successions, remain difficult, limiting our ability to interpret the environmental significance of such deposits and to predict their distributions in ancient successions. From an applied standpoint, such predictions are important in the development of hydrocarbon reservoirs and remediation of aquifers hosted in alluvial-fan strata. To elucidate our understanding of formative conditions of different types of OFGs, a study has been undertaken on the Quaternary Poplar Fan, in the endorheic Heshituoluogai Basin, China. Based on observations from outcrops and trenches on the Poplar Fan, eight different types of OFGs are identified: these lithofacies types account for 7% of the total deposits of the fan. During high flow stages, OFGs are deposited in association with supercritical sheet-like flow (type 1), unconfined streamflow (type 2), and flow in groundwater-fed channels (type 3). During low flow stages, OFGs are associated with trough cross-stratification (type 4) and sigmoidal cross-stratification (type 5); these types occur over the entire fan. At the fan margins, OFGs are associated with gulleys (type 6), especially at the distal fan toe. Other OFG types are associated with bank collapse (type 7) or intercalated with aeolian deposits (type 8). A model is proposed to account for the distribution of different types of OFGs across the fan, wherein types 1, 2 and 4 seen in the medial fan are dominant. Abstract: The transfer of sediment from the upper continental slope to rise is poorly documented along the southeast African passive margin. New swath bathymetric and sub-bottom data collected in the Natal Valley, southwest Indian Ocean, provide insight into the evolution of the Tugela canyon and fan system. Several distinct downslope changes in canyon morphology are noted. The canyon increases in relief and widens with depth. Basement outcrop is restricted to the head of the canyon becoming less prominent with depth. Step-like terracing of the canyon walls and floor becomes prominent in the mid-slope portions of the canyon and is related to a marked increase in the cross sectional asymmetry of the canyon profile. The contemporary Tugela canyon rests within a depression of the last phase of infilling. The canyon is the product of downslope erosion, and incision, caused by several phases of hinterland uplift in the mid Oligocene, mid Miocene and late Pliocene. Each phase was followed by pelagic infilling of the palaeo-canyon form. Downslope, the uplift phases are preserved in the cut-terraces and axial incisions within the main canyon thalweg. The contemporary canyon is a moribund feature, sediment starvation of the shelf area by current sweeping of the Agulhas current has decreased the material available for canyon incision and fan development. The shallow-marine turbidite fans in the Upper Miocene Huangliu Formation of the Yinggehai Basin in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS) provide an excellent opportunity to understand their sedimentary processes in a shelf depositional environment. The down-slope gravity flow processes and along-slope bottom-current reworking processes of shallow-marine turbidite fans were interpreted by using seismic, well logging, core, petrographic, geochemical, and petrophysical data. Several depositional elements were identified in the shallow-marine turbidite fans, namely, channel-fill high-density turbidites (HDTs), channel-fill low-density turbidites (LDTs) and associated frontal splays, sand-rich/mud-rich lobe deposits, and bottom-current reworked channel-fill/lobe deposits. Deep U-shaped (or V-shaped) seismic reflections and low root-mean-square (RMS) amplitudes characterize the channel-fill HDTs that consist of massive fine-grained sandstones with mud clasts. The channel-fill LDTs, characterized by V-shaped or worm-shaped reflections, mostly consist of normally graded, laminated and rippled, very fine-grained sandstones. Frontal splays are generally associated with channel-fill LDTs. The sand-rich lobe deposits show continuous high-amplitude sheet-like reflections and consist of HDTs and LDTs, whereas the mud-rich lobe deposits show continuous moderate-amplitude reflections and consist of muddy debrites. The bottom-current reworked sandstones (BCRSs), which comprise well-sorted, fine-grained sandstones with traction-current structures, are usually located in the upper parts of thick sandbodies. The variability of depositional elements from large-scale channel-fill HDTs with strong basal erosion in fan-1 to small-scale channel-fill LDTs in fan-2 is closely linked with sea-level fluctuations that result in variable gravity-flow energy and sediment input. However, the reoccurrence of large-scale channel-fill HDTs in fan-3 at sea-level highstands may possibly be attributed to enhanced sediment input from the source areas. Down-slope flow transformation from turbidity flows into muddy debris flows within an individual channel-lobe complex (CLC) resulted in a dramatic increase in clay content and resultant decreasing reservoir quality from the channel-fill HDTs to the mud-rich lobe deposits, because muddy sediments are incorporated into the precursor turbidity flows and turbulence is suppressed. Additionally, it is suggested that the widely developed traction-current structures and tidal signatures (double mud layers, mud-draped ripples, discrete wavy bedding, internal truncation surface, and convex-up laminae) are the products of reworking by internal waves and -tides. During periods of sea-level highstands, the upper parts of gravity-flow sandstones would undergo bottom-current reworking, thus resulting in the retransportation of muddy fines and the formation of reworked sandstones with traction-current structures and tidal signatures. In this study, a combination of traction-current structures, tidal signatures, vertical sequences showing sharp upper contacts and non-gradational upper contacts, and trace elements is considered to be convincing diagnostic criteria in distinguishing reworked sandstones from gravity-flow sandstones. The representative bottom-current reworked sandstones should be preferable hydrocarbon targets in further exploration because of their better reservoir properties compared with gravity-flow sandstones. Abstract: Foraminiferal assemblages from a Santonian–Campanian submarine fan system in the northwestern Vøring Basin, offshore Norway were investigated with the primary objectives to document the stratigraphic ranges of foraminiferal taxa calibrated with dinoflagellate cysts, and to interpret foraminiferal biofacies of different fan sub-environments previously proposed based on the analysis of ichnofossils. The assemblages are composed of deep-water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) without carbonate-cemented taxa. DWAF taxa of high biostratigraphic value are absent, but the complete agglutinated nature of the assemblages and the presence of Gerochammina stanislawi and Rectogerochammina eugubina are similar to those of the lower Campanian Fenestrella bellii Zone of the Norwegian Sea. More reliable dating was provided by palynology, and the age of the interval is estimated to be Santonian to Campanian. The inner to middle fan assemblages contain small numbers of specimens, and consequently the species diversity and relative abundance of morphogroups are inconsistent. Deep infaunal forms may be more common in this sub-environment, but because the abundance is low, this observation should be treated carefully. In contrast, the abundance and diversity of the assemblages of the overbank, fringe and basin plain sub-environments are fairly high. Their morphogroup composition is also similar and comparable to each other when the assemblage size is large. The assemblage from the interval with suggested hydrothermal activity is similar to those from outside the channel sub-environment. The presence of bottom water currents, possibly in the form of a western boundary current, in the basin is suggested based on the abundant occurrence of tubular forms in the overbank, fringe, and basin plain sub-environments. Abstract: Facies architecture of submarine fans and channel–levee complexes in the Eastern Black Sea Basin and their evolution from the Late Miocene until the present day are studied using a three-dimensional seismic data set covering an area of approximately 1161 km2. The interpretation of the observations reveals the outcome of the changing interplay between rate of sedimentation and compressional tectonism in the area through time. The Upper Tertiary sedimentary succession in the Eastern Black Sea Basin is characterized by various depositional elements of northeasterly sourced turbidite systems that were deposited in a progressively deforming basin at settings ranging from lower to upper slope. Depositional elements interpreted from seismic character and geometry include canyons, canyon-confined channels, levees, mass transport complexes, sediment waves, sheets and hemipelagic drapes. Two anticlines formed in a compressional tectonic regime subdividing the study area into three mini-basins acted as sediment barriers and controlled the geometry of the basin, and thus, the accommodation space, throughout the Plio-Quaternary period. Sheets that were deposited due to abrupt reduction in structural slope gradients and knickpoints that mark the boundary between site of incision and site of deposition within canyons both have displayed southwestward migration through time, which clearly reflects the basinward advance of compressional deformation in the Eastern Black Sea Basin. Abstract: Debrites with different volumes, depositional periods and setting are observed in the Nile deep-sea fan system. Here we present debrites from four late Quaternary environments: (i) within the Rosetta submarine channel at 1700 m; (ii) within small basins created by salt tectonics in the Eastern Province at 1300 m; (iii) on the open slope outside of channels at 2600 m; and (iv) in the distal part of the fan fringe beyond channel terminations at 3050 m water depth. The debrites comprise mud clasts in a generally ungraded muddy sand matrix. They are relatively thin (20–150 cm) in fan fringe, in channel and salt-tectonic basin settings, and somewhat thicker (>8 m) in the open slope setting. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and variation in the planktonic/benthic foraminiferal ratios are considered as a useful tool for tentatively evaluating the origin of sediment in these debris flows and estimation of their run-out distance. Similar microfaunal contents of clast/matrix combinations document that the debrites in the Rosetta channel and salt-tectonic basin were locally sourced. The debrite from the open slope travelled farther (up to 150 km). Three separate debrites in a fan fringe core were deposited by debris flows that originated over 200 km away in water depths shallower than 1000 m. These far-travelled debris flows appear to have eroded remarkably little sediment as they travelled for ∼200 km across low (0.8–1.2°) gradient seafloor. This lack of erosion is attributed to hydroplaning or increasing pore-fluid pressure at the base of debris flows. This study confirms that remarkably mobile debris flows can travel long distances to produce thin debrites in the distal fringes of submarine fans. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
