The effects of cadmium concentration (0, 2.5 and 5 mg L−1) on melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), melanophore index (MI), and melanophore number (MN), as well as a microscopic examination of scale melanocytes in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1757) was evaluated at different salinity levels (0, 5 and 15 ppt). The levels of MSH, MI, and MN were lower in Cd-exposed fish than in control fish (not exposed to Cd) at salinity level of 0 and 5 ppt. In ppt, however these levels of MSH, MI and MN in control and Cd-exposed fish were not significantly different. In the media without Cd, the levels of MSH, MI and MN were not significantly different at all salinities. The morphological changes of melanophores were higher in Cd-exposed fish than in control fish at salinity 0 and 5 ppt, respectively. These morphological changes were not significantly different in the control fish at all salinities as well as in fish exposed to 0-5 mg L−1 Cd at salinity of 15 ppt. This study therefore demonstrates that the toxic effect of Cd on MSH levels and melanophore morphology decreased with increasing salinity. Further, due to the sensitivity of chromatophores to Cd, melanophore morphology is proposed as a biomarker of Cd exposure in aquatic ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reaction field of juvenile false percula clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) were studied when fed two different developmental stages (nauplii and adults) of the calanoid copepodPseudodiaptomus annandalei. As the copepods undergo ontogenetic development, their morphologic and kinematic traits changes and may therefore influence the ability of the clownfish to identify and capture prey. The fish reacted to nauplii at shorter distances (15.2 ± 7.1 mm) compared to adult copepods (28.0 ± 9.8 mm). However, the fish reaction angle was significantly wider when offered nauplii (−25.3° to 64.4°) compared to adult copepods (−14.2° to 36.7°). This resulted in an equivalent attack rate on both prey items. Hence, even though nauplii are less apparent at greater distances, the fish counteract this partly by reacting to smaller prey items at a wider range. However, the carbon-specific ingestion rate was higher when offered adult copepods, which suggests adult copepods are a more rewarding prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between fish shape, swimming ability and energy consumption during swimming in fish is complex and not well understood. In this paper, we show how a self-propelled 3-D fish model can be used to examine the effect of controlled changes in some shape parameters. Parameters of the model fish are modified and the resulting fish activated for short swimming episodes during which swimming velocity, torque and energy expenditure are calculated in the computer environment. The effect of shape was determined for two different fish shapes swimming at three different tail-beat frequencies (1.43, 0.94 and 0.64?Hz). The simulation results indicate that fish model one (based on a salmon) has stronger swimming ability than fish model two (a modified salmon fish shape) even though energy expenditure of fish shape two is greater than that of fish shape one. In the same fish types, the fish-swimming velocity and energy expenditure are proportional to tail-beat frequency. The ability to regenerate lost tissues, organs or whole body parts is widespread across animal taxa; in some animals, regeneration includes transforming a remaining structure to replace the one that was lost. The transformation of one limb into another involves considerable plasticity in morphology, physiology and behavior, and snapping shrimp offer excellent opportunities for studying this process. We examined the changes required for the transformation of the small pincer to a mature snapping claw inAlpheus angulosus. First molt claws differ from mature claws in overall shape as well as in morphology related to snapping function; nonetheless, shrimp with first molt claws do produce snaps. While most shape variables of second molt claws do not differ significantly from mature claws, the plunger (structure required for snap production) does not reach mature size until the third molt for females, or later for males. Thus, the pincer claw can be transformed into a functional snapping claw in one molt, although both the underlying morphology and superficial shape are not fully regenerated at this stage. The rapid production of a functional snapping claw that we observe in this study suggests that this particular function is of significant importance to snapping shrimp behavior and survival. This study tested the effect of sustained swimming on growth, ingestion rate, and morphology of juvenile montezumae swordtails (Xiphophorus montezumae). Because montezumae swordtails inhabit running freshwater systems, it was expected that moderate exercise would increase feeding and growth rates, promoting also the hydrodynamic form of the fish. Experimental groups were subjected to different levels of sustained exercise by being forced to swim against water currents at four different velocities (0, 4.1, 7.8, and 12.9 cm/s). The results showed that growth-rate decrease in fish forced to swim, while the increase in exercise did not modify the ingestion rate. Thus, it is likely that the extra energy expenditure associated with the swimming cost was not compensated by an increase in food ingestion. Sustained exercise increased the fineness ratio towards a more hydrodynamic form. Morphological traits linked with minimum drag, such as caudal peduncle depth and amplitude of the caudal fin were not modified. Our results suggest that water velocity has an important role determining the physiology and, to a lesser extent, the morphology of young montezumae swordtails. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
