When treating the topic of sin, the tongue's sins are often omitted. Nevertheless, they seriously jeopardize human relationships and social harmony, just as much as evil acts. When addressed, however, these sins are not given due importance. As St. James affirms: "[...] the tongue is a small member and yet has great pretensions. Consider how small a fire can set a huge forest ablaze. The tongue is also a fire. It exists among our members as a world of malice [...] and setting the entire course of our lives on fire, itself set on fire by Gehenna" (James 3:5-6). As such, this article will present the sins of the tongue according to St. Thomas Aquinas, in order to demonstrate that they negatively influence our self-realization and that of others, and social well-being. Perhaps by understanding them more profoundly, we can avoid many evils within our lives, and thus build a better society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
