Ce processus n’est pas un cas classique de dérivation : une ambiguïté souvent demeure quant au statut de ces formes en V‑ED, oscillant entre verbe et adjectif. Le but de cet article est de montrer de quelle façon les verbes peuvent être « stabilisés » pour devenir des adjectifs. Avec excited dans they were excited, la stabilisation est complète, alors qu’avec locked dans the door was locked, le verbe dérivant peut être réactivé, comme dans the door was suddenly locked. Les paramètres étudiés sont : la sémantique du verbe, l’agentivité (récupérable ou pas), la présence de préfixes (par exemple le préfixe be- dans bedecked ou le préfixe négatif un- dans unchecked), la lexicalisation (et plus particulièrement la contribution du nom à une collocation de type abandoned child) et enfin la syntaxe (position épithète ou attribut). La conclusion est que l’instabilité est inhérente à l’emploi d’adjectifs en V-ED car toute variation (la présence d’un adverbe par exemple) peut changer leur interprétation. Le processus de stabilisation est considéré comme étant lié à deux paramètres majeurs : la suppression de l’origine du changement potentiel et la mise en arrière-plan de l’agentivité. Among the different ways an adjective can be formed, one of them is the use of the past participle of a verb, as in, for instance: The house was tucked far back from the main road. This process is not a straightforward case of derivation: an ambiguity often remains as to the status of the V-ED form, between adjective and verb, especially with adjectival passives. The aim of this article is to show how verbs can be “stabilised” into adjectives. With excited in they were excited, the stabilisation is complete, whereas with locked in the door was locked, the deriving verb can be reactivated, as in the door was suddenly locked. The parameters surveyed are: the semantics of the verb, agentivity (recoverable or not), prefixing (for instance the prefix be- in bedecked or the negative prefix un- in unchecked), lexicalization (particularly the contribution of the noun in a collocation of the type abandoned child) and, finally, syntax (attributive or predicative position). The conclusion which is reached is that instability is inherent to the use of V-ED adjectives as any variation (the presence of an adverb for example) can change their interpretation. The process of stabilisation is seen as linked to two major parameters: the suppression of the origin of the potential change of state and the backgrounding of agentivity.

Twenty adjectives belonging to five intuitively recognizable semantic families, age (old, young), size (large, small, big), color (black, white, red, yellow, blue), modality (possible, impossible, necessary, likely, sure) and emotion (happy, sad, glad, sorry) were inventoried in a 5-million word corpus tagged for part of speech (POS) and lemma. Regular expressions were used to target specific contextual parameters including syntactic function (adnominal or predicative), determiners, grammatical subject and intensifiers, while manual estimates were obtained from random samples of 500 occurrences per adjective. Benchmark data, for purposes of comparison, were first collected for the category as a whole using POS tags, from which it was observed that four major determiners and six copula verbs were present in 80-90% of all occurrences. Adjective families were found to share common, distinctive syntactic profiles, with similar predispositions to adnominal or predicative function and similar affinities with specific determiners or intensifiers. Differences were observed as well between certain quasi-synonyms such as glad/happy with respect to one or more of these criteria. Vingt adjectifs appartenant, d’un point de vue sémantique et intuitif, à cinq familles, à savoir ceux qui décrivent l’âge (old, young), la taille (large, small, big), la couleur (black, white, red, yellow, blue), la modalité (possible, impossible, necessary, likely, sure) et les émotions (happy, sad, glad, sorry), ont été inventoriés dans un corpus de 5 millions de mots étiquetés par catégorie grammaticale et lemme. Des formules de recherche par expressions régulières (regex) ont été conçues pour viser certains paramètres contextuels, notamment la fonction syntaxique (adominale ou prédicative), le déterminant, le sujet grammatical et les marques d’intensification, tandis que, par ailleurs, des estimations manuelles ont été obtenues à partir d’échantillons aléatoires de 500 occurrences pour chaque adjectif. À des fins de comparaison, des données de référence ont été récoltées pour la catégorie dans son ensemble à partir des étiquettes grammaticales, ce qui a permis d’observer que quatre déterminants principaux et six verbes copules sont impliqués dans 80-90% des occurrences. Au sein de chaque famille d’adjectifs, l’on retrouve un profil syntaxique distinctif commun quant à leur prédisposition à la fonction adnominale ou prédicative et leurs affinités avec certains déterminants ou marques d’intensification. L’examen de ces critères syntaxiques fait aussi ressortir quelques différences entre des quasi-synonymes tels que glad/happy.

Appropriation, gentrification, and colonisation originated as precise technical terms. This study analyses examples of each word in recent mainstream online news texts, and demonstrates that all three have undergone semantic change, particularly metaphorisation and generalisation (cf. Geeraerts [2010: 26]). Language users tend to select and emphasise shared semantic features of each, to the exclusion of other semantic features, such that the terms are in some circumstances, for many language users, interchangeable. I provide factual evidence (cf. Wallis [2019]) or attestations (cf. Zgusta [1971]) of these terms’ newly emerging semantic relationships, and I present evidence for decolonisation as a preferred contradictory antonym to all three (cf. Murphy [2010]). I analyse examples in which language users actively and critically employ these terms alongside each other, defining or negotiating meanings of each; and I explore possibilities for alternation in some shared attested syntagmatic combinations, such as the appropriation, gentrification, or (de)colonisation of history. I discuss mechanisms of change, with reference to the philological tradition (Sperber [1923], [1938]; Nerlich [1992]), structuralism (Ullmann [1963]), and cognitive semantics (Blank [1999]), and propose a process whereby affective charge motivates semantic generalisation in precise technical vocabulary when it begins to be used in contentious, fraught public debate. Les termes anglais appropriation, gentrification, et colonisation sont originellement des termes techniques précis. Cette étude analyse des exemples de chaque terme dans des textes d’actualité récents en ligne et montre que tous trois ont subi un changement sémantique, en particulier de métaphorisation et de généralisation (cf. Geeraerts [2010 : 26]). Les locuteurs ont tendance à sélectionner et à mettre l’accent sur les caractéristiques sémantiques partagées de chacun des termes, à l’exclusion d’autres caractéristiques sémantiques, de sorte que les termes sont dans certaines circonstances, pour de nombreux locuteurs, interchangeables. Cet article fournit des exemples factuels (cf. Wallis [2019]) ainsi que des attestations (cf. Les progrès actuels concernant la disponibilité et la taille des corpus électroniques, particulièrement contenant du langage virtuel, créent de nouvelles possibilités de recherche dans le milieu des changements sémantiques du lexique anglais [Allan & Robinson 2012 : 4]. En adéquation avec ces développements, Grieve et al. [2017] présentent une méthodologie destinée à trouver de « nouveaux lexèmes » et l’appliquent à un corpus de données concernant Twitter aux États-Unis de 2013 à 2014. Leur méthodologie implique une recherche de mots débutant avec une fréquence globale basse et présentant un coefficient de corrélation élevé avec leur rang dans les séries chronologiques sur l’ensemble de l’année. [Grieve et al. 2017 : 103-105]. Se concentrant sur une période d’un an du Pushshift Reddit Dataset (Baumgartner et al. [2020]), cette étude applique la méthodologie proposée à un forum en ligne différent : Reddit. Par conséquent, cet article a deux objectifs : tout d’abord, tester la méthodologie proposée par Grieve et al. [2017], puis étudier les émergences lexicales récentes sur la plateforme Reddit. Cela permettra également une comparaison entre les deux plateformes Reddit et Twitter dans le but de fournir un éclairage complémentaire sur la dépendance au contexte de l’émergence lexicale dans un environnement virtuel. De plus, la mise à l’épreuve ainsi que le perfectionnement de la méthodologie permettant de découvrir de nouveaux lexèmes fourniront des informations précieuses pour les spécialistes souhaitant par la suite utiliser cette procédure. Appliquer la méthodologie au Pushshift Reddit Dataset permet d’observer un total de huit nouveaux lexèmes ; six résultant principalement d’un changement onomasiologique, ainsi que deux apparaissant comme le résultat d’un changement sémasiologique. Les caractéristiques des nouveaux lexèmes (catégorie grammaticale, processus de formation lexicale) sont en général très similaires à celles identifiées par Grieve et al. [2017 : 108-109], alors que leurs trajectoires durant la période étudiée varient radicalement et ne suivent pas les courbes en S généralement proposées [par ex. Blythe & Croft 2012] et également attestées par Grieve et al. [2017 : 116]. Concernant les critères sémantiques, les domaines sémantiques correspondant aux lexèmes identifiés diffèrent considérablement des résultats obtenus par Grieve et al. [2017 : 107-108], ce qui peut également être expliqué par les profils différents des deux plateformes ainsi que par la différence de leurs utilisateurs respectifs. De nombreuses limites ont pu être identifiées concernant l’application de la méthodologie de Grieve et al. [2017] : tout d’abord, une possible ambiguïté liée à la catégorie grammaticale est susceptible de fausser les fréquences obtenues. Dans un second temps, la classification des mots en tant que mots ‘établis’ a été basée sur la présence attestée de ces mots dans un corpus représentatif plutôt que sur leur présence dans les dictionnaires standards. Dans un troisième temps, la méthodologie permet seulement la détection de lemmes simples, ce qui ne représente pas le changement actuel de manière exacte, puisque de nombreux nouveaux lexèmes semblent faire partie de mots composés. The current advancements in the availability and size of electronic corpora, especially containing computer-mediated language, open up new possibilities for the study of change in the English lexicon [Allan & Robinson 2012: 4]. In line with these developments, Grieve et al. [2017] present a methodology for finding “emerging lexemes” and apply it to a corpus of American Twitter data from 2013 to 2014. Their methodology entails searching for word forms that start off with a low overall frequency and that feature a high correlation coefficient with their rank in the time series over the whole year [Grieve et al. 2017: 103-105]. Working with a one-year section of the Pushshift Reddit Dataset (Baumgartner et al. [2020]), this study applies the methodology proposed to a different online forum, Reddit. The present paper therefore has two aims: to test the methodology proposed by Grieve et al. [2017] and to investigate recent lexical emergence on the platform Reddit. This also allows for a comparison between the two platforms Reddit and Twitter to provide further insights into the context-dependence of lexical emergence in the online environment. Furthermore, the trial and refinement of the methodology for discovering emerging lexemes holds valuable insights for scholars looking to use this procedure in the future.Applying the methodology to the Pushshift Reddit Dataset yields a total of eight emerging lexemes; six resulting primarily from onomasiological change, while two appear to be the outcome of semasiological change. The formal characteristics of the emerging lexemes (word class, word formation process) are overall very similar to the features identified by Grieve et al. [2017: 108-109], whereas their trajectories over the time period investigated vary noticeably and do not follow the s-shaped curves that are commonly proposed [e.g. Blythe & Croft 2012] and that are also attested by Grieve et al. [2017: 116]. Concerning the semantic criteria, the semantic domains of the identified lexemes differ considerably from the results by Grieve et al. [2017: 107-108], which can also be explained by the different profiles of the two platforms and their users. Several caveats could be identified for the application of the methodology by Grieve et al. [2017]: first of all, word class ambiguity is likely to distort the frequencies obtained. Secondly, words being attested in a representative corpus was proposed as a more realistic criterion for classifying a word as ‘established’ compared to its inclusion in standard dictionaries. A third problem is that the methodology only allows for the detection of single-word units, which is not an accurate representation of the changes taking place, as several of the emerging lexemes appear to be part of compounds.

This issue of Lexis focuses on lexical semantics from a diachronic perspective. This paper aims to characterize the textual properties of the modal adjective likely, which has been largely neglected in the literature on modal studies. Our quantitative and qualitative analysis is based on a corpus stratified into seven discourse modes and has helped us to identify three distinct uses of the modal form under study. Each of these uses is associated with specific semantic, syntactic, argumentative and registral features. However, the study also shows that a number of properties are common to all the uses of likely, the most remarkable ones being the adjective’s strong attraction towards existential processes, future-time reference and logical coherence links, especially cause/consequence relations. Cet article vise à remplir un manque relatif dans les études consacrées à la modalité en anglais en explorant les propriétés discursives de l’adjectif modal likely au sein d’un corpus stratifié en modes de discours. L’étude quantitative et qualitative permet d’identifier trois emplois différents de likely qui se distinguent chacun par leur attraction pour un mode de discours spécifique, pour un type de modalité donné (épistémique ou existentielle), ainsi que pour des configurations syntaxiques et argumentatives particulières. Toutefois, l’étude permet également de mettre au jour des propriétés communes à tous les emplois de la forme étudiée, à savoir une forte compatibilité avec les procès existentiels, avec le renvoi à l’avenir et avec des enchaînements logiques, en particulier, le lien de cause/conséquence.

Les noms de marque représentent des atouts linguistiques indéniables et remplissent de multiples fonctions, de la différentiation du produit jusqu’à la création et/ou le renforcement de l’image de marque de la société. La créativité linguistique et les jeux de mots sont convoqués lors de la création d’un nom de marque, qui prend fréquemment la forme d’amalgames. Bien que le rôle du phénomène d’amalgamation ait été depuis longtemps reconnu comme une caractéristique dominante du discours publicitaire et du discours du marketing, quasiment aucune recherche n’a été consacrée jusqu’à présent au rôle des amalgames dans les noms de marque, d’où l’objectif de cet article, qui consiste à analyser les quelque 600 noms de marque trouvés dans le Portmanteau Dictionary [Thurner 1993]. Après avoir étudié les motivations phonologiques, graphiques, stylistiques et sémantiques, nous concluons que les traits distinctifs des amalgames dans les noms de marque résident dans le chevauchement de mots entiers et de jeux de mots. En ce qui concerne les types de produits concernés, il semble que les amalgames s’infiltrent aussi bien dans les noms de boissons et nourritures, d’appareils électriques et scientifiques, de jouets et de matériels sportifs que dans les noms de cosmétiques et d’articles ménagers. Brand names represent valuable linguistic assets. They serve a variety of purposes, from product differentiation to corporate identity. Creativity and wit are employed in brand naming practices, frequently resulting in the formation of blends. Although blending has long been recognized as a prominent feature of advertising and marketing discourse, next to no research has hitherto been devoted to blends in brand names. Hence, the aim of this paper is to analyze approximately 600 brand names excerpted from the Portmanteau Dictionary [Thurner 1993]. Having examined the phonological, graphological, stylistic and semantic motivations, we conclude that the distinguishing features of blends in brand names are the overlap of full words and word play. In terms of particular classes of goods, blends seem to permeate the names of foods and beverages, electrical and scientific devices, toys and sporting equipment, as well as stationery, cosmetics and houseware.

Cette étude s’inscrit au sein d’une réflexion plus générale que nous menons depuis quelques années sur la mise en discours des perceptions. Elle cherche à remplir un double objectif : (i) déterminer comment les sujets parviennent à faire usage de la langue française dans l’expression de leurs perceptions d’une part, et (ii) comprendre comment les phénomènes sensibles ainsi décrits s’organisent en morphologies qui les configurent en structures signifiantes, d’autre part. Pour mener à bien cette entreprise, nous nous sommes tournée vers la pratique de la dégustation œnologique dont le principe consiste à interpréter, décrire et évaluer les perceptions des propriétés organoleptiques d’un vin. Nous avons ainsi collecté des commentaires de dégustation publiés dans cinq revues « œnologiques » françaises vendues en kiosque dans le but d’identifier les dispositifs communicationnels engagés par le dégustateur professionnel dans l’expression de la complexité des vins dégustés. Nous nous sommes plus particulièrement concentrée sur le lexique de la dégustation dont nous avons mesuré la pertinence grâce à une étude des parcours interprétatifs qu’ils suscitent. L’usage conjoint de la sémantique interprétative de François Rastier et de la théorie de l’iconicité de Jean-François Bordron nous a ainsi permis de soulever l’existence d’une communauté d’organisation entre la perception (qualités organoleptiques du vin) et le langage (propriétés sémantiques de la terminologie œnologique). En effet, nous constatons que ce lexique, parfois considéré comme fortement imagé, traduit sémantiquement des correspondances entre expériences perceptives relevant d’ordres sensoriels distincts. This paper is part of a wider study on the discourse on perception I have conducted in the past few years. I had two goals: (i) on the one hand, I tried to determine how people use the French language in order to talk about their perceptions; (ii) on the other hand, I wanted to understand how the perceived phenomena thus described are organized into morphological forms and become significant. To carry out this study, I decided to work on wine tasting to identify, describe and evaluate how the organoleptic qualities of a wine are perceived. I built a corpus comprising tasting notes published in five French “oenological” magazines sold in newsstands. I aimed to identify communication devices used by professional tasters to describe the complexity of the wines tasted. I particularly focused on the lexicon of taste and thus evaluated the relevance of this terminology by studying the interpretive pathways it induces. Both the interpretive semantics developed by François Rastier and Jean-François Bordron’s theory of iconicity allowed me to find the common organization between perception (the organoleptic qualities of a wine) and language (the semantic properties of the wine terminology). Indeed, I noticed that this wine terminology, sometimes considered “metaphorical”, is similar to the terminology relating to perceptions deriving from different senses.

Dans notre ère caractérisée de post-vérité, dans quelle mesure peut-on constater la prédominance des émotions dans les discours politiques récents ? Plus précisément, comment le lexique participe-t-il à des stratégies visant à éveiller la peur ou susciter la pitié de l’auditeur ? The last few years have seen the emergence of the term “post-truth” to characterize the political scene. This concept refers to a situation where the objective facts have far less importance and impact than appeals to emotion and personal belief in order to influence public opinion. In this so-called post-truth era, to what extent can this prevalence of emotions be observed in recent political speeches? More precisely, is lexicon prone to arouse emotions? Through the study of a corpus on the topic of drug reform in the United States, the author examines the participation of loaded words to fearmongering strategies and appeals to pity.

In literature, writers have the liberty to deviate from linguistic norms under a principle known as poetic license. Poetic license allows deviation in favour of making language inspiring. Deviation from linguistic norms often implies that writers can take liberties with word formation, thus neology in literary contexts should be addressed specifically. This article analyses the status of literary coinages in the scope of neology and describes the specific context of children’s literature. The article also offers a typology of nonce formation processes for occasionalisms, with textual analysis, from a corpus of children’s books, using J. Tournier’s matrices of lexicogenesis [2007: 51]., En littérature, tout/e auteur/e peut enfreindre les normes linguistiques selon un principe appelé la licence poétique. La déviance est ainsi tolérée dès lors qu’elle sublime le texte. Cette déviance aux normes engendre souvent des créations lexicales audacieuses, et c’est pour cela que la néologie littéraire doit être étudiée dans son contexte spécifique. Le présent article analyse le statut des néologismes littéraires dans le cadre de la néologie et décrit les spécificités de la littérature pour la jeunesse. L’article propose une typologie des procédés de (ré)création lexicale des occasionnalismes, selon les matrices lexicogéniques de J. Tournier [2007 : 51], avec une analyse d’occurrences extraites d’un corpus de livres pour la jeunesse.

La présente étude, qui s’inscrit dans le cadre théorique des Grammaires de construction, se penche sur l’intensité communément associée à la construction WHX (exemplifiée par what the hell…?). Nous montrons que l’intensité n’est pas entièrement inhérente à la construction ; elle est plutôt dérivée de l’expression d’une émotion. L’analyse de données provenant du Corpus of Contemporary American English met également au jour des cas de variation syntaxique (what in the hell, what in hell, what’s the hell…), et des cas de variation lexicale (what the freak, what the pus-rotted hell…). Bien que ces sous-types partagent tous un même air de famille, parler de stricte synonymie constructionnelle ne nous semble pas défendable ; nous tentons alors de montrer que ces différentes sous-constructions seraient corrélées à des degrés d’intensité variés. This paper is a study of the intensity attached to the WHX construction (most prototypically exemplified in what the hell…?), using the theoretical framework of Construction Grammar. It is shown that intensity is not entirely inherent in the construction; it results, rather, from the expression of an emotion. The analysis of extensive data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English also reveals that there exist cases of syntactic (what in the hell, what in hell, what’s the hell…) and lexical variation (what the freak, what the pus-rotted hell…). Although these sub-types are all grouped together in a family-resemblance fashion, I argue that strict constructional synonymy is not a plausible option and that these different sub-constructions may correlate with varying degrees of intensity.

Cet article s’occupe des déterminants cognitifs de l’intensification, notamment dans le cas des adjectifs complexes d’intensification en anglais, avec un regard particulier sur la préfixation et la réduplication d’adjectifs. Sur la base d’une analyse qualitative, nous allons montrer, d’une part, que des structures configurationnelles telles que le degré, la scalarité et la délimitation des pôles scalaires jouent un rôle clé dans l’intensification, et d’autre part, que la transformation des adjectifs en intensifieurs entraine le passage de l’objectivité à la subjectivité. L’intensification repose donc sur un glissement allant du domaine du contenu vers le domaine configurationnel du degré, à travers une métaphore conceptuelle ou une métonymie conceptuelle, qui peuvent opérer également sur les points de référence maximaux de réception qui soient saillant du point de vue de la perception. Faisant l’hypothèse d’une identité entre la conceptualisation des phrases intensificatrices et la formation des mots, nous proposons l’identification de trois typologies en accord avec les recherches sur les modèles de l’intensification dans la construction de phrases. Ainsi, nous distinguons une catégorie fondée sur le degré (all-new), une catégorie fondée sur la répétition de traits sémantiques (snow-white, freezing cold), et une catégorie dans laquelle l’intensification réside dans l’intégration de la scalarité et du sens lexical, qui sont généralement placés dans de domaines différents (red hot et roaring drunk). This paper addresses the cognitive determinants of intensification in English complex intensifying adjectives, also taking an eye to prefixation and adjective reduplication. Based on qualitative data analysis, we shall see that configurational structures such as degree, scale and boundedness play a key role, and that the development into intensifiers involves a move from objective meanings towards subjectivity. Importantly, intensification rests on a shift from content domains to the configurational domain of degree via conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, which can also operate on perceptually salient maximum reference points. Working on the assumption of parallel conceptualizations for intensifying phrases and word-formations, the chapter argues for three broad mechanisms of intensification in line with research on patterns of intensification in phrasal constructs: a degree type (all-new), a semantic-feature-copying type (snow-white, freezing cold), and a type where intensification relies on the integration of scales which associate with lexical meanings typically located in different knowledge domains (red hot and roaring drunk).

International audience; Based on conceptual and discourse-oriented metaphor theory, the article argues that British far-right discourse increasingly conceptualizes immigration with the help of martial rather than “fluid” or “container” metaphors. Metaphors such as “conquest”, “colonization”, and “ethnic cleansing” operate a semantic slide which transforms foreigners into “enemies” and seemingly justifies radical “emergency” measures against immigration. These implicit references to historical events convey specific notions of time and visions of the future.

This paper explores the translatability of Arabic amelioration and pejoration in English subtitling, illustrated with a subtitled Egyptian film, Ramadan atop the Volcano by Arab Radio and Television (ART). The paper first examines the nature of euphemism and dysphemism. Both concepts are approached from the perspective of technical and translation paradigms. The study shows that the difficulties arising from translating euphemistic or dysphemistic-loaded utterances are numerous for being culture-specific on the one hand and for the technical dimension usually involved in subtitling on the other. The study shows that the subtitler may opt for one of three major translation strategies: (1) an omission of source language (SL) euphemistic or dysphemistic expressions in the target culture; (2) a retention of SL euphemistic or dysphemistic expressions by means of formal-based translation strategies; and (3) an addition of euphemistic or dysphemistic expressions in the target culture.

The commonly established general typology of neology and/or neologism includes the distinction between denominative or referential and stylistic or expressive neology, according to the function or aim of the lexical creation in question. The term denominative or referential neology is used to refer to the creation of new lexical units to denominate new concepts, objects or realities, whereas stylistic or expressive neology refers to the use of lexical creation to introduce different subjective nuances or new, expressive or original forms in communication. However, the distinction between denominative or referential neology and stylistic or expressive neology is insufficient, since in no way does it cover the wide range of linguistic and extralinguistic motivations underlying the new lexical units that may be called euphemistic. In this paper, we will endeavour to prove this assertion, at the same time accounting for some of the motivations upon which euphemistic creations are based.

A diachronic survey in the field of the so-called evaluative morphology in some branches of the Indoeuropean family (above all Romance and Slavonic languages and Greek) reveals two different tendencies. On the one side suffixes that displayed a diminutive value in the earliest stages of these languages do not correspond to present-day diminutive suffixes. On the other side, Proto-Indoeuropean before and Latin and Ancient Greek then lacked augmentative suffixes at all, while Romance languages and Modern Greek have at their disposal some of them. So, diminutives seem a dynamic and unstable linguistic strategy, which, in the course of ages, has undergone a wide (cyclic?) renewal: the semantic function has been kept on, while the formal strategies to express it have changed. Instead, augmentatives seem to be the result of an innovation: to a sure point, a new category has been introduced and each language has had to find the means to express it. In a diachronic perspective, augmentatives seem to be a more steady linguistic strategy than diminutives. In this paper I intend at reconstructing, going backwards, the genesis of some Romance, Slavonic, and Greek diminutive and augmentative suffixes in order to single out both their semantic archetypes and possible common stages recurring in their evolutive processes.

Phonetic iconicity in evaluative morphology is an integral part of sound symbolism in natural languages. Former research in this field has brought contradictory results. On the one hand, there is Universal #1926 (Plank and Filimonova’s Universals Archive, Konstanz) claiming universal marking of diminutives by front high vowels, and of augmentatives by high back vowels. Furthermore, there are papers extending the idea of phonetic iconicity to the front-back opposition of consonants. On the other hand, there are studies (Ultan [1978], Nieuwenhuis [1985], Gregová, Körtvélyesssy and Zimmermann [2009]) indicating that (a) this phenomenon is of areal rather than universal nature; (b) there are substantial differences between languages within individual genetic families, (c) front high vowels are typical of augmentatives rather than diminutives; diminutive affixes are acoustically realized by central vowels.The paper presents the results of cross-linguistic research into a balanced sample of 60 languages of the world. The focus is this time on the verification of the hypothesis in question by comparing languages of various genetic, geographical and morphological types. Special attention is paid to (a) checking the postulated front-back opposition in languages with both morphological diminutives and augmentatives, (b) the relevance of phonetic iconicity in terms of geographical, genetic, and morphological classifications of the sample languages; comparison of the data obtained with the results arrived at in the previous stages of our research which dealt with 35 European languages. The discussion is supported by numerous examples.

Nous nous penchons sur quelques noms composes anglais qui sont stylistiquement marques dans la mesure ou ils disent un referent de facon non conventionnelle. Ces composes sont par ailleurs caracterises par la brievete, car ils condensent un discours sous-jacent. Nous comparons les noms composes aux adjectifs composes, et il ressort que ces derniers, meme s’ils peuvent egalement etre vus comme synthetisant une structure analytique sous-jacente, ne presentent pas le meme caractere de brievete ou du moins, pas au meme degre. Si l’on admet que ces remarques appartenant au domaine de la formation des mots nous renseignent, plus generalement, sur les parties du discours nom et adjectif, la brievete apparait alors comme caracterisant la categorie nominale plutot qu’adjectivale. Notre comparaison sytlistique nous mene ainsi a une reflexion sur les parties du discours.

Terence Hawkes a montre comment l’anglais avait lexicalise une tendance, incarnee par le souverain, qui consiste a vouloir jauger tres exactement, voire mettre un prix, sur les sentiments des etres qui nous sont chers. La tragedie met en scene l’echec de la tentative du roi, desireux de retribuer ses filles mesure pour mesure, et deroge en partie aux regles de la justice poetique, dont elle fait apparaitre le caractere conventionnel et illusoire.

Cet article propose une lecture entre systeme et variation, entre langue et discours, d’un texte particulier Before I Say Goodbye* (BISG) de Ruth Picardie. Il s’agit d’un discours ecrit proche de l’oralite : c’est un recueil d’echanges de courriers electroniques entre Ruth Picardie et ses amis, d’editoriaux publies dans Observer Life columns et de reponses de lecteurs. Comme le titre de l’ouvrage l’indique, l’isotopie est celle de la fin de vie. Le point de vue adopte dans l’article est celui de la reception du texte : l’objectif est d’apprehender, dans une demarche analytique, l’impact du discours sur la co-construction du sens d’unites lexicales.La premiere partie consiste en une etude de la construction semantique d’unites lexicales par transfert categoriel. Il s’agit de contraster la valeur en discours de verbes denominaux lexicalises a celle de verbes denominaux qui relevent davantage de la creativite de l’auteur.Dans la seconde partie, il s’agit de degager le sens discursif le plus saillant d’unites lexicales verbales en discours. En effet, dans ce texte, la construction des verbes de mouvement et des verbes de perception engendre leur recategorisation semantique. La perte de poids semantique lexical que connaissent les verbes feel, look, sound, go et turn dans BISG leur confere un role de cadrage du scenario verbal : ces unites verbales entrent en discours dans un rapport a la verite du sujet qui devient son propre objet. The lemma ‘AIM’ in its verbal form presents a case of prepositional (at)/to-infinitive alternation. This study demonstrates that whilst users of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries would conclude that the pair is equivalent in use, a corpus study of the two forms enables certain clear distinctions to be made. The most significant of these may be found to be the predominant pattern of use of AIM+at in more formal styles with AIM+to being prefered in less formal discourse. Other uses are examined in context concerning clausal polarity, tense, and collocational elements of semantic significance. The relevance of such a corpus-based study is examined in relation to possible use in the field of stylistics. This study concludes by demonstrating the importance of corpus study to supplement information given in dictionaries, and suggesting the highlighting of distinctions in underlying principles through the use of such data, as well as noting possible relevance to the stylistician.

The aim of this paper is to assess the relevance of the studies on impoliteness carried out in the present context. Although researchers are increasingly trying to analyse impolite utterances, the theoretical frameworks they develop seem to rely heavily on the Brown & Levinson [1978] tradition, albeit in a reverse fashion. This paper particularly focuses on the models put forward by Culpeper [1996] and Bousfield [2008].

La metaphore, a la difference de la comparaison, peut etre percue comme un acte de langage impoli. Cette etude donne les raisons linguistiques de cette difference : je definis la metaphore comme un enonce de langue reappropriee pouvant etre recu comme un enonce inapproprie, a certaines conditions d’infelicite signant l’echec du partage sentimental vise par la metaphore, et donnant lieu a un flou resultatif.

This paper aims at analysing the phenomenon of politeness in British English and Peninsular Spanish in the first encounter conversations between strangers taking into consideration power and distance, where relevant. I attempted to demonstrate the differences in two cultures as Spaniards are thought to be more direct, while the British seem to be deeply concerned about non-imposition. The data for the analysis were taken from to films: Love Actually (British English) and Va a ser que nadie es perfecto (Peninsular Spanish), which were analysed applying Brown and Levinson’s framework. The results supported my hypotheses that most of the strategies used by Spaniards were those of positive politeness, while the British employed negative politeness strategies. However, the number of positive politeness examples found in British English conversations and negative politeness strategies as well as many instances of bald on record technique (which were claimed to be inappropriate and almost absent) used by Spaniards revealed new tendencies in the use of politeness in Peninsular Spanish and British English cultures.

This study originated from the real-world need to provide a lexicographic reference work for the specialized field of stone processing. Very little is available on this specific niche of the lexicon. This contribution will offer lexicographers and terminologists a first insight into the identification and designation of materials, activities, and processes related to the quarrying and processing of stones. The study was conducted on the data collected to build a pair of comparable corpora, each containing a variety of texts – from brochures to technical specifications – in one of the source languages investigated: English and Italian. The methodology employed derives from the report on a Council of Europe project (see International Journal of Lexicography vol. 9, n. 3, 1996). To advance the inquiry, a number of term candidates were identified – based on the frequency and keyword lists generated from the corpora – and analysed in their contexts of use to eventually formulate hypotheses of equivalence in both languages. This work is the result of the growing convergence of different approaches to meaning, all harnessing corpus evidence.

A procedure for the identification of semantically opaque (i.e. idiomatic) German multiwords is presented. We focus on verb + PP combinations that are lexicographically relevant (extracted via dependency parsing [Schiehlen 2003]) of the kind ins Leben rufen – “to initiate”, lit.: “to call into life”. Starting from [Villada Moirón and Tiedemann 2006], the method exploits the fact that opaque combinations are translated as a whole, whereas compositional uses would show regular, individual translations of the words involved. The translations into other languages are obtained by applying GIZA++ [Och and Ney 2003] word alignment to the EUROPARL corpus [Koehn 2005]. Numerous experiments are performed to further optimise the original method: several parameters are analysed individually as well as in combination with each other. This leads to the following results: depending on the actual parameter settings, values between 0.800 and 0.936 (in terms of uninterpolated average precision) are reached amongst the highest scoring 200 multiword candidates, as opposed to a baseline of 0.584, using the 200 most frequent multiwords in decreasing order of their occurrence frequency.

L’objet de cet article est de montrer comment les unites lexicales nord-americaines (composition par juxtaposition, suffixation, combinatoire et corruption) qui contiennent au moins un morpheme transcrit du japonais sont integrees dans le lexique nord-americain. Il fait reference au phenomene d'interculturation morpho-semantique.

This paper catalogs the words of Nahuatl (aka Mexicano) origin that are attested in the Oxford English Dictionary. These words are cataloged under two classifications: semantic and chronological. Semantically, these words are grouped according to terms pertaining to zoology, botany/horticulture, culinary terms, intoxicants/psychoactives/drugs, mytho-religious terms, cultural items, cultural events, ethnological and linguistic labels, mineralogical terms, and other. Chronologically, words are attested entering the English language in each century since the 1500s, with the earliest borrowing attested in 1555 and the most recent in 1950. Loan words from Nahuatl into English are particularly interesting because they were typically not borrowed due to direct contact with speakers of Nahuatl, but secondarily through contact and trade with speakers of continental and, later, Mexican Spanish, or other European languages.

Mainstream word-formation is concerned with the formation of new words from morphemes. As morphemes are full linguistic signs, the resulting neologisms are transparent: speakers can deduce the meanings of the new formations from the meanings of their constituents. Thus, morphematic word-formation processes can be analysed in terms of their modifier/head relationship, with A + B > AB, and AB = (a kind of) B. This pattern applies to compounding and affixation. There are, however, certain word-formation processes that are not morpheme-based and that do not have a modifier/head structure. Acronyms like NATO are formed from the initial letters of word groups; blends like motel ‘mix’ or conflate submorphemic elements; clippings like prof shorten existing words. In order to analyse these word-formation processes, we need concepts below the morpheme level. This paper will analyse the role played by elements below the morpheme level in the production of these non-morphematic word-formation processes which have been particularly productive in the English language since the second half of the 20th century.

Cette etude se donne pour corpus l’ensemble des mots du lexique anglais presentant le groupe consonantique bl- a l’initiale. Notre objectif global est, dans un premier temps, de tenter de montrer que l’invariance phonologique de cette classe heuristiquement constituee de ‘mots en bl-’ vehicule une invariance notionnelle en profondeur : les sens de deux sous-classes importantes de ‘mots en bl-’ permettent l’acces a des representations mentales dont nous postulons que le soubassement repose sur le ‘scheme mental’ (Lakoff & Johnson). Dans un second volet, nous proposons d’etudier le role joue par l’aspectualite lexicale dans nos donnees, a partir des traits definitoires des ‘mots en bl-’ tels qu’ils apparaissent dans le Oxford English Dictionary et le English Dialect Dictionary.

This study seeks to compare how various English dictionaries distinguish multiple meanings, focusing on a particular class of words identifiable in dictionary classification, namely, polysemous adjectives. The polysemy displayed by adjectives tends to be of a heavily context-dependent type. A great deal of the literature concerning polysemy has little bearing upon adjectives. Adjectives are also a varied word-class, thus posing a range of challenges to the lexicographer. This study looks at six recently published British monolingual dictionaries of English, both for native speakers and advanced learners. A random sample (based on Collins English Dictionary) of adjectives with many senses is selected, and their respective dictionary entries compared and evaluated, following analysis of corpus data. The random sample chosen prove a quite heterogeneous set, with some appearing to be not true adjectives; others to be not truly polysemous; some having a clear hierarchy of senses; others much less clear. Differences between senses are often highly subtle and contextually determined, forming a semantic cline, or continuum of senses, which dictionaries often divide quite differently. Detailed results are shown here for four of the adjectives, unbalanced, idle, canonical and particular, and other results discussed in brief.

This paper argues that the phenomenon of the null instantiation of objects, i.e. the property of some transitive verbs to omit their direct complements, can be viewed as a polysemy-trigger. Our study, adopting a lexical complexity perspective, suggests that in the majority of cases verbs retain traits of their prototypical meaning, which becomes the starting point for possible inferences, contributing to the overall interpretative process, and leading to the dynamic emergence of different semantic interpretations and nuances through complex mechanisms of figure and ground.Corpus-data on the verb see support the main typologies of null objects outlined, as well as the main factors attested to play a role in licensing null objects. Moreover, the deprofiling of the object in the case of a nuclear verb like see triggers the emergence of new pragmatic meanings, which cannot be derived from the lexical meanings of the various elements in a proposition taken in isolation, but which are interactionally-driven and surface in unpredictable ways, determining a progressive shift towards the cognitive dimension of the verb.

Cet article a pour but d’etudier la validite empirique des reseaux lexicaux tels que decrits dans la litterature cognitive, qui rendent compte des differents sens d’un mot polysemique en montrant comment chaque sens est une extension d’un autre. Le point de depart est le reseau lexical decrit par Norvig & Lakoff [1987] pour le verbe anglais take. L’article compare la structure de ce reseau avec des donnees issues de corpus et d’une experience de production de phrase. L’evaluation de la validite du modele de Norvig & Lakoff est a la fois linguistique (le modele reflete-t-il la frequence telle qu’elle est attestee dans la langue ?) et cognitive (le modele reflete-t-il la saillance dans l’esprit du locuteur ordinaire ?). Il est demontre que le modele ne tient pas face a l’analyse empirique proposee ici, mais qu’il peut cependant avoir un role a jouer dans une theorie de la polysemie.
