This article presents findings from the first year of the Harbingers research project started in 2015. The project is a 3-year longitudinal study of early career researchers ( ECRs) to ascertain their current and changing habits with regard to information searching, use, sharing, and publication. The study recruited 116 researchers from seven countries ( UK, USA, China, France, Malaysia, Poland, and Spain) and performed in-depth interviews by telephone, Skype, or face-to-face to discover behaviours and opinions. This paper reports on findings regarding discovery and access to scholarly information. Findings confirm the universal popularity of Google/Google Scholar. Library platforms and web-scale discovery services are largely unmentioned and unnoticed by this user community, although many ECRs pass through them unknowingly on the way to authenticated use of their other preferred sources, such as Web of Science. ECRs are conscious of the benefits of open access in delivering free access to papers. Social media are widely used as a source of discovering scholarly information. ResearchGate is popular and on the rise in all countries surveyed. Smartphones have become a regularly used platform on which to perform quick and occasional searches for scholarly information but are only rarely used for reading full text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the Reveal Digital's model which pools money from libraries to fund digitization of special collections of other libraries and founded on the belief that cultural heritage material in libraries should be freely accessible. Reveal Digital identifies projects likely to generate widespread interest and funding support and collaborate to scope and develop a comprehensive cost model that covers every aspect of the project. Its inaugural project is called Independent Voices.

Electronic journals are now the norm for accessing and reading scholarly articles. This article examines scholarly article reading patterns by faculty in five US universities in 2012. Selected findings are also compared to some general trends from studies conducted periodically since 1977. In the 2012 survey, over threequarters (76%) of the scholarly readings were obtained through electronic means and just over half (51%) of readings were read on a screen rather than from a print source or being printed out. Readings from library sources are overwhelmingly from e-sources. The average number of articles read per month was 20.66, with most articles read by the medical and other sciences, and on average each article was read for 32 minutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper synthesizes the findings from the qualitative portions of two studies (conducted in 2005 and 2008) that assessed the activities and attitudes of faculty members in several US universities, regarding their interactions with scholarly materials, and their scholarly reading patterns. The systematic interpretation of their comments and descriptions of their own experiences and opinions offers an image of scholars who enthusiastically embrace the electronic information environment, in spite of some frustrations with its imperfections. Their use of e-journals, Internet resources, and email communication has become indispensable to their scholarly activities, and has profoundly changed the way they interact with information, create new knowledge, and relate to their university library. For these faculty members, e-journals have supplanted the print format, because of their convenience, flexibility of work location, advantages for interdisciplinary access, and ease of storage. There has been a clear upward trend over the past 50 years in traditional listed print subscription prices. The more recent trend towards electronic publishing has made possible new ways of charging for journals, such as differential pricing structures and bundling of journals which are purchased through license fees/charges (both of which enable libraries to buy significantly more journals, but at the same time make it more difficult to analyze prices). We are now also seeing a new emphasis on the 'author-side payment' model. The concept of a 'publication' no longer applies only to printed works; information technology has extended its application to several other types of works. This article describes a facility called the Common Knowledge Library that publishes modules of formally structured information representing facts and knowledge of various kinds. Publications of this new type have some characteristics in common with databases, and others in common with software modules; however, they also share some important characteristics with traditional publications. A framework for citation of previous work is important in order to provide an incentive for contributors of such modules. Peer review – the traditional method of quality assurance for scientific articles – must also be applied, although in a modified form, for fact and knowledge modules. The construction of the Common Knowledge Library is a cumulative process; new contributions are obtained by interpreting the contents of existing knowledge sources on the Internet, and the existing contents of the Library are an important resource for that interpretation process. In this article the author comments on the roles of scientists, researchers, publishers, and librarians in communicating with data in light of the growth of computational data, particularly science data. The author argues that primary research data is a form of scholarly communication but that it is often much more complex than other forms of scholarly communication, such as books and research articles. Topics include the storage of data sets in libraries and the quality of scholarship.
