Various fruit, vegetables and plants contain a high amount of carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and other antioxidants in different concentrations and combinations. These substances used by nature are an effective defense mechanism against the destructive action of free radicals, which are the result of the negative influence of the environment. It was found that the peel of fruit and vegetables usually contains a higher amount of carotenoids than the pulp. Humans cannot synthesize carotenoids by itself, thus, they should be applied systemically with a supplementation rich in these substances. The diet, based on the consumption of a high amount of carotenoid rich products, increased the concentration of carotenoids in the human skin. Taking into consideration the results of previous studies, there is a strong correlation between the appearance of the skin concerning furrows and wrinkles and the level of carotenoid lycopene obtained in the skin. The present results demonstrate that a diet rich in products, which contain a high amount of carotenoids, can be an efficient strategy to reduce skin aging. In the present study, resonance Raman spectroscopy was used as a fast non-invasive optical method for the determination of the carotenoid antioxidant substances in fruit, vegetables and for the determination of the influence of a carotenoid rich diet on the antioxidant level of the human skin.

The nonlinear absorption responses of graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are investigated using the Z-scan technique and laser beams at 405, 532 and 635 nm in a continuous wave regime. Results show that graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide do not show any open Z-scan signals at wavelengths of 532 and 635 nm. At the same time, fresh graphene oxide suspension is found to exhibit a nonlinear absorption process in the case of a laser light at 405 nm. Moreover, it can be observed that the reduction of graphene oxide by 405 nm laser irradiation decreases its nonlinear absorption value significantly. These findings highlight the important role of the reduction process on the nonlinear absorption performance of graphene oxide.

We present a method for few-layer graphene growth on nonmetallic substrates using excimer KrF laser ablation of ordered pyrolytic graphite. The graphene is scalable and its thickness is controllable. It can be deposited on virtually any nonmetallic substrates at a relative low temperature of 750??C. This laser-based method is highly efficient and the whole growing process takes less than 100?s. Raman spectroscopy confirms the formation of sp2-bonded carbon with a grain size of about 40?nm. The optical transmittance and conductivity of the graphene films are comparable with exfoliated or metal-catalyzed graphene. This work demonstrates a promising laser-based, transfer-free technique for synthesis of graphene.

By researching the influence of sludge age (SRT) on phosphorous removal and sludge characteristics in the HA–A/A–MCO (hydrolysis-acidification–anaerobic/anoxic–multistep continuous oxic tank) process, which has the effect of simultaneous phosphorous and nitrogen removal and sludge reduction, it is found that extended SRT is helpful for improving the ability of anaerobic phosphorous release and chemical recovery of phosphate, but the hosphorous removal efficiency is not affected. Extended SRT causes the system to have even more active sludge; it can also lead to the system having a powerful ability of biochemical reaction by using superiority of concentration. Meanwhile, extended SRT can still reduce sludge yield. Extended SRT cannot make soluble metabolic product (SMP) accumulate in the reactor, so that the pollutant removal power is reduced; it also cannot affect the activity of the sludge. However, extended SRT is able to make the coagulation of the sludge hard, and cause the sludge volume index value increase, but cannot cause sludge bulking.
