This research follows the investigations about the relationship between bronze statuettes and contexts in Roman times, particularly explored by Annemarie Kaufmann-Heinimann. The rarity of bronze figures (human, divine and animals) in Roman tombs of Imperial age has been repeatedly emphasized. The aim of the paper is the collection, not exhaustive, of evidences in funerary contexts, to determine their meaning. From a methodological point of view, it was necessary to exclude figurines placed in graves but with other originary functions and several bronzes whose finding in tombs is unreliable. This preliminary survey has given about eighty all-round bronzes from burials, distributed in different areas, both in the Empire and marginal. Considering the huge amount of Roman burials known today, the overall evidence is scarce but allows some observations; it is evident the pre-eminence of Venus and Mercury, gods which had a funerary role. There is also an attempt to find the reasons of the rarity of metal statuettes in the tombs of roman period.

Il contributo presenta una panoramica generale su una particolare e pregiata classe di arredi domestici quali sono i letti con decorazione in bronzo in età romana. Partendo dai modelli greco-ellenistici e dalla loro introduzione a Roma, ci si sofferma sulla loro tipologia e sugli elementi da cui erano costituiti, per quindi affrontare nello specifico le problematiche inerenti a ritrovamenti di letti in bronzo in Cisalpina. Pezzi eccezionale per completezza e realizzazione sono le gambe di letto tricliniare rinvenute a Modena da una ricca domus della città; tali esemplari, già oggetto di studi ricostruttivi, sono in questa sede esaminati in particolare per la scena plastica che li decorava che presenta l’ immagine di Ercole contro il Centauro. L’ipotesi avanzata è che possa essere una testimonianza della propaganda per immagini di Antonio in un frangente particolare quali le lotte civili che interessarono i territori dell’Italia settentrionale nella tarda repubblica.

The domus of Piazza Marconi was built in the Augustan age in the southern end of the Roman city. In the I century, the domus was the home of a family of great economic possibilities, certainly important within the social and politic structure of the old Cremona; it is revealed by the high quality of the frescoes, the floors, the mosaics, and the stone furnishings that adorned the courtyards and reception rooms. Although it is likely that the majority of bronze objects have been stolen by soldiers during the sack of Vespasian in 69 AD, the remaining findings, including containers and furniture, offer an interesting picture of the metal furnishings in a rich home of the Cisalpine, with a terminus ante quem that immediately recalls the more famous model of the Vesuvian cities.

Si propone un censimento delle attestazioni di decorazione in bronzo per carri in Italia settentrionale, limitando la ricerca agli elementi figurati. L’indagine, per quanto presumibilmente non esaustiva, ha condotto a un considerevole aumento delle testimonianze note (ora una cinquantina), consentendo alcune osservazioni su botteghe di produzione, proprietari, iconografia, cronologia.
