Antifouling thin films derived from charged hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) layers were fabricated and evaluated. The anionic hbPG (a-hbPG) monolayers and cationic hbPG/anionic hbPG (c/a-hbPG) bilayers were adsorbed on the underlying self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cysteamine and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) by electrostatic interaction, respectively, and their procession was monitored by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR). The adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fibrinogen on the premade a-hbPG and c/a-hbPG thin films was measured and the capability of these thin films to resist nonspecific protein adsorption was evaluated by SPR as well. It is observed that the c/a-hbPG bilayer films possessed good antifouling properties. With c/a-hbPG bilayers consisting of higher molecular weight a-hbPG, the adsorption of BSA and fibrinogen were as low as 0.015 ng/mm(-2) and 0.0076 ng/mm(-2), respectively, comparable to the traditionally ultralow antifouling surfaces (<0.05 ng/mm(-2) of nonspecific protein adsorption). This work proved that the charged hbPG thin films can strongly reduce the nonspecific protein adsorption and have the promise for the antifouling coatings with improved performance.

A strong ligand effect was observed for the aqueous-phase growth of ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) in the Ostwald ripening (OR) stage. The QDs were made by injecting Se monomer at room temperature followed by a ramp to 100 °C. The ramp produced a second, more gradual increase in the concentrations of both Zn and Se monomers fed by the dissolution of QDs below the critical size. The dissolution process was followed using measurements of the mass of Zn in QDs and in the supernatant by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Despite the flux of monomers, there was little growth in the QDs of average size based on UV-vis absorption spectra, until the temperature reached 100 °C, when there was a period of rapid growth followed by a period of linear growth. The linear growth stage is the result of OR as the total mass of Zn in QDs and in the solvent remained constant. The growth data were fit to a continuum model for the limiting case of surface reaction control. The rate is proportional to the equilibrium coefficient for ligand detachment from the QD surface. The ligand 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was the most tightly bound to the surface and produced the lowest growth rate of (1.5-2) × 10(-3) nm/min in the OR stage, whereas thiolactic acid (TLA) was the most labile and produced the highest growth rate of 3 × 10(-3) nm/min. Methyl thioglycolate (MTG) and thioglycolic acid (TGA) produced rates in between these values. Ligands containing electron-withdrawing groups closer to the S atom and branching promote growth, whereas longer, possibly bidendate, ligands retard it. Mixed ligand experiments confirmed that growth is determined by ligand bonding strength to the QD. Photoluminescence spectroscopy showed that the more labile the ligand, the more facile the repair of surface defects during the exposure of the QDs to room light.

Purification is a necessary step before the application of nanocrystals (NCs), since the excess matter in nanoparticles solution usually causes a disadvantage to their subsequent coupling or assembling with other materials. In this work, a novel salts-based precipitation technique is originally developed for the precipitation and size-selective precipitation of aqueous NCs. Simply by addition of salts, NCs can be precipitated from the solution. After decantation of the supernatant solution, the precipitates can be dispersed in water again. By means of adjusting the addition amount of salt, size-selective precipitation of aqueous NCs can be achieved. Namely, the NCs with large size are precipitated preferentially, leaving small NCs in solution. Compared with the traditional nonsolvents-based precipitation technique, the current one is simpler and more rapid due to the avoidance of condensation and heating manipulations used in the traditional precipitation process. Moreover, the salts-based precipitation technique was generally available for the precipitation of aqueous nanoparticles, no matter if there were semiconductor NCs or metal nanoparticles. Simultaneously, the cost of the current method is also much lower than that of the traditional nonsolvents-based precipitation technique, making it applicable for mass purification of aqueous NCs.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements are used to examine the ability of applied potential to drive the ionic self-assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) onto a substrate modified with a monolayer of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA). The potential of zero charge (PZC) of the gold electrode modified with a monolayer of 3-MPA was found by differential capacitance measurements to be -0.12 (+/-0.01) V versus Ag-AgCl. Changing the substrate potential to values positive (-0.01 V vs Ag-AgCl) of the PZC induces interfacial conditions that are favorable for the electrostatic deposition of cationic polymers onto the surface of 3-MPA monolayers. This result is also consistent with experimental observations obtained when the 3-MPA-modified substrate is exposed to 0.10 mol L (-1) NaOH solutions. When potentials equal or negative to the PZC are applied to the substrate, no significant accumulation of the PDDA is found by either QCM or EIS measurement. This result is consistent with results obtained when the 3-MPA modified substrate is exposed to 0.10 mol L (-1) HCl solutions where no PDDA adsorption is expected because the monolayer is neutral under these conditions. Changes in the impedance and quartz crystal frequency obtained after potential is applied to the substrate are interpreted in terms of the applied potential creating interfacial conditions that are favorable for the deprotonation of the terminal carboxylic acid groups and the subsequent electrostatic assembly of the polycation onto the negatively charged monolayer.

A new colorimetric sensor for sensing Hg2+ in a high-salinity solution has been developed using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated with 3-mercaptopropionate acid (MPA) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Because of the high negative charge density of AMP on each AuNP surface, MPA/AMP-capped AuNPs are well dispersed in a high-salt solution. In contrast, the aggregation of MPA-capped AuNPs was induced by sodium ions, which shield the negative charges of the carboxylic groups of MPA. Through the coordination between the carboxylic group of MPA and Hg2+, the selectivity of MPA/AMP-capped AuNPs for Hg2+ in a high-salt solution is remarkably high over that of the other metals without the addition of a masking agent or a change in the temperature. We have carefully investigated the effect of the AMP concentration on the stability and sensitivity of MPA/AMP-capped AuNPs. Under optimum conditions, the lowest detectable concentration of Hg2+ using this probe was 500 nM on the basis of the measurement of the ratio of absorption at 620 nm to that at 520 nm. The sensitivity to Hg2+ can be further improved by modifying the MPA/AMP-capped AuNPs with highly fluorescent rhodamine 6G (R6G). By monitoring the fluorescence enhancement, the lowest detectable concentration of Hg2+ using R6G/MPA/AMP-capped AuNPs was 50 nM.

Peptide-modified electrode surfaces have been shown to have excellent recognition properties for metal ions. An efficient method of screening a potential peptide for its selectivity for a given metal would involve the synthesis of the peptide directly on the electrode surface. This paper outlines a procedure in which the tripeptide Gly-Gly-His was synthesized one amino acid at a time on a gold surface modified with a self-assembled monolayer of the mixed alkanethiolates 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and 3-mercaptopropane (MP). Electrochemistry and high-resolution mass spectrometry were used to elucidate the structure of the adsorbed species and follow the synthesis. The amino acids can be attached only to MPA, but the presence of a diluting unreactive molecule of MP reduces steric crowding about the reaction center. The maximum coverage of synthesized tripeptide occurs at a ratio of MPA/MP of 1:1.
