In orthopedics, developing functionalized biomaterials to enhance osteogenesis and bacterial resistance is crucial. In clinics it is extremely important for implanted devices to achieve the property of enhanced lubrication and bacterial resistance; however, such a strategy has rarely been reported in previous literature. In the present study, a surface functionalization method, motivated by articular cartilage-inspired superlubrication and mussel-inspired adhesion, was proposed to modify titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) using the copolymer (DMA-MPC) synthesized via free radical copolymerization. The copolymer-coated Ti6Al4V (Ti6Al4V@DMA-MPC) was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle, and Raman spectra to confirm that the DMA-MPC copolymer was successfully coated onto the Ti6Al4V substrate. In addition, the tribological test, with the polystyrene microsphere and Ti6Al4V or Ti6Al4V@DMA-MPC as the tribopair, indicated that the friction coefficient was greatly reduced for Ti6Al4V@DMA-MPC. Furthermore, the bacterial resistance test showed that bacterial attachment was significantly inhibited for Ti6Al4V@DMA-MPC for the three types of bacteria tested. The enhanced lubrication and bacterial resistance of Ti6Al4V@DMA-MPC was due to the tenacious hydration shell formed surrounding the zwitterionic charges in the phosphorylcholine group of the DMA-MPC copolymer. In summary, a bioinspired surface functionalization strategy is developed in this study, which can act as a universal and promising method to achieve enhanced lubrication and bacterial resistance for biomedical implants.

Titanium and its alloys have long been used as implantable biomaterials in orthopedics; however, to the best of our knowledge, few studies were reported to investigate surface functionalization of titanium for enhanced lubrication and sustained drug release. In the present study, titania nanotube arrays (TNTs) were prepared by anodization as effective drug nanocarriers, using titanium as the substrate. Meanwhile, motivated by articular cartilage-inspired superlubricity and mussel-inspired adhesion, a copolymer containing both dopamine methacrylamide and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine was synthesized (DMA-MPC) and spontaneously grafted onto the TNT surface, which was validated by characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the lubrication test showed that copolymer-grafted TNTs have remarkably reduced friction coefficients compared with bare TNTs. Furthermore, the drug release test demonstrated that copolymer-grafted TNTs inhibited burst drug release and achieved sustained drug release in comparison with bare TNTs. In conclusion, the bioinspired surface functionalization strategy developed here, namely DMA-MPC copolymer-grafted TNTs, can be applied to modify orthopedic biomaterials (such as titanium) for enhanced lubrication and sustained drug release.

Electrospun nanofibers, with a typical interconnected porous structure mimicking the extracellular matrix, are commonly used in bone tissue engineering. However, to the best of our knowledge, few studies have been reported to investigate the enhancement of osteogenesis capability of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers based on bioinspired surface functionalization. In this study, a universal and versatile approach was proposed to spontaneously modify the electrospun PCL nanofibers with bioactive nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA), using dopamine as an effective bioadhesive agent. The evaluation of scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and surface wettability indicated that nHA was successfully coated onto electrospun nanofibers (PCL-PDHA). Furthermore, in vitro cell experiment including adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic capability and in vitro biomineralization test in simulated body fluid revealed that the PCL-PDHA nanofibers were biocompatible to MC3T3-E1 cells, and the osteogenesis and biomineralization capabilities were greatly improved in comparison with that of PCL nanofibers. In summary, the facile bioinspired surface functionalization method introduced in the present study, due to its universality and versatility, not only can be used to improve osteogenesis of electrospun nanofibers but also can be regarded as an avenue to achieve other predesigned purposes in biomedical engineering.

Poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) cross-linked networks on Ti6Al4V show superlubricity behavior when sliding against polytetrafluoroethylene in water-based lubricants. The superlubricity can occur but only with the existence of salt ions in the polymer cross-linked networks. This is different from the phenomenon in most polymer brushes. An investigation into the mechanism revealed that cations and anions in the lubricants worked together to yield the superlubricity even under harsh conditions. It is proposed that the preferential interactions of cations with PVPA molecules rather than water molecules are the main reason for the superlubricity in water-based lubricants. The interaction of anions with water molecules regulates the properties of the tribological interfaces, which influences the magnitude of the friction coefficient. A new series of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type quinoacridine derivatives (1-3) with aggregation-induced red emission properties were designed and synthesized. In these compounds, the electron-withdrawing 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)acetonitrile groups act as electron-accepting units, while the alkyl-substituted conjugated core acts as electron-donating units. The restriction of intramolecular rotation was responsible for the AIE behavior of compounds 1-3. All compounds were employed as building blocks to fabricate one-dimensional (1-D) organic luminescent nano- or microwires based on reprecipitation or slow evaporation approaches. Morphological transition from zero-dimensional (0-D) hollow nanospheres to 1-D nanotubes has been observed by recording SEM and TEM images of aggregated sates of compound 2 in THF/H(2)O mixtures at different aging time. It was demonstrated that the synthesized compounds with different lengths of alkyl chains displayed different wire formation properties. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of compound 2 provided reasonable explanation for the formation of 1-D nano- or microstructures.

A trifluoromethyl-substituted benzothiadiazole-cored phenylene vinylene fluorophore (1) was synthesized and displayed piezo- and vapochromism and thermo-induced fluorescence variation in solid phase. Grinding could disrupt the crystalline compound 1 with orange emission into amorphous compound 1 with green emission, and heating treatment could change the amorphous compound 1 into crystalline compound 1. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) characterizations demonstrated that crystalline and amorphous compound 1 possess different molecular packing. A differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement revealed that the emission switching was due to the exchange between the thermodynamic-stable crystalline and metastable amorphous states. The ground sample exhibited vapochromic fluorescence property. Furthermore, compound 1 showed interesting supramolecular assembly characteristics in solution. Slowly cooling the hot N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution of compound 1 resulted in the formation of orange fluorescent fibers, whereas sonication treatment of the cooling solution led to the generation of organic molecular gel. The field emission scanning electronic microscope (FESEM) and fluorescent microscopy images revealed smooth nano- or microfiber and network morphology properties. The PXRD spectra confirmed that these nano- or microstructures had a similar molecular-packing model with the crystalline state of compound 1. Slow evaporation of the toluene solution of compound 1 could produce green emissive microrods, which exhibited interesting thermo-induced fluorescence variation.
