We conducted field observations and experiments to explore debris flow dynamics, sediment transportation and slope erosion at an active natural debris flow gully in the headwaters of Jiangjia Ravine (Dongchuan region, Southwest China). In this region, the hillslopes were heavily jointed, weathered and sparsely vegetated, providing continuous and rich sediment supplies for initiating debris flows. The debris flow propagated in the channel as a sequence of surges, with periodical changes of flow flux, velocity, water content, and viscosity as controlled mainly by the conditions of erodible sediments and water supplies from the upstream. The water content of bank sediments ranged from 5 to 8%, while it was 16 to 26% for debris surges in the channel. The particle size distribution of sediments on the alluvial fan followed the Weibull's cumulative distribution and the mean size was in the range of 2 ~ 4 mm. The coarse particles were primarily elongated or prismoidal and aspect ratios followed well a normal distribution with the mean value of 0.4. The angular particles entrained in dense viscous debris flow surges could effectively abrade and groove the channel bed and banks, increasing the intensity of slope erosion. The incised slope had a sequence of terraced depositional layers on both banks. The layer thickness decreased as the erosion depth moved deeper into the stratum where hard bed soil/rock layers existed. The water-soil mixture of debris flow exhibited a clear shear-thinning behavior with its viscosity decreasing gradually with the increase of shear rate following the widely accepted power-law model. An erodible substrate and a sharp slope break affect the dynamics and deposition of long runout landslides. We study the flow evolution of a granular mass (1.5-5.1 l of sand or gravel) released on a bilinear chute, i.e., an incline (between 35 and 66°) followed by a horizontal sector, either sand-free or covered (1-2-cm-thick sand layer). Monitoring the time evolution of the falling mass profiled at 120 Hz, the impact dynamics, erosion of the basal layer, and modes of deposition are studied. The frontal deposition is followed by a backward propagating shock wave at low slope angles (<45°), or by a forward prograding flow at greater angles. Experiments with colored sand layers show a complex sequence of dilation, folding and thrusting within both the collapsing sand flow and the substrate. Experimental results are compared with real rock avalanche data and nearly vertical collapses. The observed increase of the drop height divided by the runout ( H/ L or Heim's ratio) with both chute slope angle and thickness of the erodible substrate is explained as an effect of vertical momentum loss at the slope break. Data suggest a complex evolution, different from that of a thin flow basal shear flow. To provide an approximate explanation of the dynamics, three analytical models are proposed. Erosion of a 1-cm-thick substrate is equivalent to 8-12 % increase of the apparent friction coefficient. We simulate the deposition and emplacement over an erodible layer with a FEM arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian code, and find a remarkable similarity with the time evolution observed in the experiments. 2D models evidence the internal deformation with time; 3D models simulate deposition. Early warning systems (EWSs) rely on the capacity to forecast a dangerous event with a certain amount of advance by defining warning criteria on which the safety of the population will depend. Monitoring of landslides is facilitated by new technologies, decreasing prices and easier data processing. At the same time, predicting the onset of a rapid failure or the sudden transition from slow to rapid failure and subsequent collapse, and its consequences is challenging for scientists that must deal with uncertainties and have limited tools to do so. Furthermore, EWS and warning criteria are becoming more and more a subject of concern between technical experts, researchers, stakeholders and decision makers responsible for the activation, enforcement and approval of civil protection actions. EWSs imply also a sharing of responsibilities which is often averted by technical staff, managers of technical offices and governing institutions. We organized the First International Workshop on Warning Criteria for Active Slides (IWWCAS) to promote sharing and networking among members from specialized institutions and relevant experts of EWS. In this paper, we summarize the event to stimulate discussion and collaboration between organizations dealing with the complex task of managing hazard and risk related to active slides. Rockslides in alpine areas can reach large volumes and, owing to their position along slopes, can either undergo large and rapid evolution originating large rock avalanches or can decelerate and stabilize. As a consequence, in particular when located within large deep-seated deformations, this type of instability requires accurate observation and monitoring. In this paper, the case study of the La Saxe rockslide (ca. 8 × 10 m), located within a deep-seated deformation, undergoing a major phase of acceleration in the last decade and exposing the valley bottom to a high risk, is discussed. To reach a more complete understanding of the process, in the last 3 years, an intense investigation program has been developed. Boreholes have been drilled, logged, and instrumented (open-pipe piezometers, borehole wire extensometers, inclinometric casings) to assess the landslide volume, the rate of displacement at depth, and the water pressure. Displacement monitoring has been undertaken with optical targets, a GPS network, a ground-based interferometer, and four differential multi-parametric borehole probes. A clear seasonal acceleration is observed related to snow melting periods. Deep displacements are clearly localized at specific depths. The analysis of the piezometric and snowmelt data and the calibration of a 1D block model allows the forecast of the expected displacements. To this purpose, a 1D pseudo-dynamic visco-plastic approach, based on Perzyna's theory, has been developed. The viscous nucleus has been assumed to be bi-linear: in one case, irreversible deformations develop uniquely for positive yield function values; in a more general case, visco-plastic deformations develop even for negative values. The model has been calibrated and subsequently validated on a long temporal series of monitoring data, and it seems reliable for simulating the in situ data. A 3D simplified approach is suggested by subdividing the landslide mass into distinct interacting blocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study shows a quantitative rockfall risk assessment (QRA) for a slope of the Feifeng Mountain (China), including an explicit assessment of the uncertainties. For rockfall risk analysis, the annual probability of occurrence, reach probability, temporal-spatial probability and vulnerability of tourists were calculated for both dry and rainy day conditions. The resulting individual risk for exposed people visiting the historical site can be considered as acceptable for all scenarios, whereas the overall societal risk lies within the as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) zone and therefore requires some mitigation actions. For the explicit assessment of uncertainty, an error propagation technique (first-order second moment (FOSM)) was adopted, starting from expert knowledge heuristic estimations of the coefficient of variation for each component of the risk analysis procedure. As a result, coefficients of variation of the calculated risk were obtained, ranging from 48 to 132 %, thus demonstrating the importance of accounting for uncertainty in rockfall risk modelling. A multi-criteria methodology is also proposed for the assessment of the standard deviation of the parameters adopted for the stochastic rockfall run-out model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debris avalanches produced from the collapse of volcanic edifices are destructive events that involve volumes up to two orders of magnitude larger (cubic kilometer) than most non-volcanic rock and debris avalanches. We replicate the motion and spreading of several volcanic collapses by means of a depth-averaged quasi-3D numerical code. The model assumes a frictional internal rheology and a variable basal rheology (i.e frictional, Voellmy and plastic). We back analyzed seven case-studies against observations reported in the literature to provide a set of calibrated cases. The ASTER and SRTM satellite-derived digital elevation models were used as topographic data. The numerical model captures the main features of the propagation process, including travel distance, lateral spreading and run up. At varying triggering factors and material characteristics the best fitting parameters span in a narrow interval and differ from those typical of non-volcanic rock and debris avalanches. The bulk basal friction angles (the sole parameter required in the frictional rheology) range within 3° and 7.5° whereas typical values for non-volcanic debris avalanches vary from 11° to 31°. The consistency of the back analyzed parameters is encouraging for a possible use of the model in the perspective of hazard mapping. The reconstruction of the pre-event topography is critical, and it is associated to large uncertainty. The quality of the terrain data, more than the resolution of the DEMs used, is relevant for the modeling. Resampling the original square grid to larger cell sizes determines a low increase in the back analyzed rheological parameters, as a result of the lower roughness of the terrain.
