Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Family Resilience Reinforcement Program (FRRP) for family caregivers of the elderly with dementia on the family resilience, caregiver burden, family adaptation, perceived health status and depression. Methods: FRRP was implemented for 60 minutes each time, once a week, for 8 weeks. According to 3 factors of Walsh’s Family resilience theory, FRRP was organized and specified as redefining ‘belief system’ in 1 to 2 sessions, figuring out one’s own ‘organizational pattern’ in 3 to 5 sessions, enhancing ‘communication process’ in 6 to 8 sessions. A total of 46 family caregivers were assigned into either the experimental group with FRRP or the control group. Data were collected from February 18 to April 12, 2013 at the dementia support centers, and the data of 36 participants were finally analyzed. Results: The experimental group reported statistically significant differences in family resilience (p=.002), caregiver burden (p=.012), family adaptation (p<.001), and perceived health status (p=.002) compared to those in the control group. No significant difference was found between the two groups in depression. Conclusion: In the light of these results, FRRP is considered to decrease caregiver burden and to influence family resilience, family adaptation and perceived health status positively. The developed FRRP is considered to be an efficient nursing intervention for strengthening family resilience of the given population. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV). Methods: The research design was a non-equivalent control group with a non-synchronized design. The participants were the patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopy. Data were collected from July, 2014 through January, 2015. The participants in the experimental group (n=35) received an assessment of risk factors of PONV, aroma therapy, and P6 acupressure method as recommended in the guidelines. Those in the control group (n=35) received usual nursing care. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, x2 -test using SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: The occurrence of nausea and vomiting, the level of nausea and vomiting, and the need for antiemetic medicine in the experimental group were significantly less than those in the control group after surgery. The levels of postoperative pain and the amounts of time for nursing activities in the experimental group were significantly reduced than those in the control group after surgery. The levels of satisfaction were significantly higher in the experiment group than that of the control group. Conclusion: The evidence-based guidelines is recommended for nursing practice as a guidance for managing PONV and helping the recovery of patients after laparoscopic surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Aspiration pneumonia (AP) is the major complication of dysphagia in patients with acute stroke. Nursing management for dysphagia influences on patients’ health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effects of Dysphagia Nursing Protocol (DNP) for patients with acute stroke. We aimed to examine the incidence of AP and the dependency rate at the discharge. Methods: We used a non-equivalent control group posttest only design in this study. DNP was developed with content validity index > 0.75 in all items. This protocol was composed of the evaluation, education, complication prevention, and checking phases. After training the staff nurses, we applied DNP protocol to the experimental group. The control group was enrolled from June to August 2013 (n=80), and the experimental group was June to August 2014 (n=64). Results: The incidence of AP was 16.3% in control group while 4.7% in experimental group (p=.028), and the Odds Ratio (OR) was 0.26 (p=.045). The dependency ratio was 66.3% in control group while 43.8% in experimental group (p=.011), and the OR was 0.33 (p=.011). Purpose: This prospective study was designed to investigate the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI), voided volume, post void residual volume (PVRV), daytime frequency and nocturia in women over 40 years. Methods: The sample comprised of 302 women over 40 years. The study lasted from February 2008 to November 2009. Data about daytime frequency and nocturia were gathered from 48 hour bladder diary. Further, a PVRV was assessed through a bladder ultrasonography. Data were analyzed using the t-test, Mann Whitney test, Kruskal Wallis test and multiple regression. Results: Although the prevalence of UI among the women was as high as 70.5%, the perception rate of UI was as low as 10.8%. Single voided volume of women without or with UI was 223 mL or198mL (p<.001), respectively; PVRV, 25.8 mL or 23.6 mL (p=.055); daytime frequency, 5.89 or 6.96 (p<.001); nocturia, 0.99 or 1.23 (p=.040). Age (ß=0.19, p=.001), single voided volume (ß=-0.16, p=.006), and nocturia (ß=0.12, p=.034) were associated with UI. Conclusion: The prevalence of UI was found to be 70.5% among the participants. The assessment of single urinary volume and nocturia through a bladder diary lends support to identifying UI for women over 40 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
