The editors of USA Today are not closely following the advice implicit in The Continuing Study of Newspaper Reading. They are providing many more illustrations of interest to men than to women, especially in areas of sports and, to a lesser degree, politics. Only in the areas of food and fashion are they coming closer to the expected interests of women; however, the number of photographs in these categories is exceedingly small: .84% for fashion and 1.69% for food. However, since The Continuing Study of Newspaper Reading was terminated in 1950, 33 years ago and considerably before women made the gains in public and social recognition that have been made in recent years, it is quite likely that at least some of the interests of newspaper-reading women have changed. Only a new survey on the order of that conducted during 1939–50 by the Advertising Research Foundation can provide that information. Gannett spent a considerable amount of time researching the national market before launching USA Today, and it is likely that the firm's own research shows readership patterns which differ from those suggested by The Continuing Study of Newspaper Reading. Television news has increased its audiences in proportion to its increased time on the air. As a major new form of learning experience about current events and personalities, television unquestionably changes the function of the newspaper for many of its readers. But the evidence does not support the proposition that television news has larger audiences in cities where newspapers (morning or evening) have lost ground than in cities where newspapers have been gaining readers. The reasons why individual newspapers prosper or falter are many and complex, but TV news competition can not be numbered among them. It might be expected that in adjusting to the changed news communication environment, newspapers would be placing increased stress on content of specialized reader interest, since such segmented areas of appeal can be handled in print far more readily than on television. Yet the evidence demonstrates that newspapers have been deemphasizing their regular coverage of such special interest material, in spite of the fact that the total amount of editorial space available to editors has increased. The growth of the news hole is itself a function of the growth of newspaper advertising. But papers that have been gaining circulation have added both news and advertising pages at a faster rate than those that have stood still or retreated. It would be cheerful to conclude (though the case is by no means proven) that those newspapers whose editorial content provides the greatest value to the reader have shown the best ability to prosper in both circulation and advertising in the face of the growing strength of television news.
