BACKGROUND: Digital X-ray imaging is essential for diagnosing osteoporosis, but distinguishing affected patients from healthy individuals using these images remains challenging. OBJECTIVE: This study introduces a novel method using deep learning to improve osteoporosis diagnosis from bone X-ray images. METHODS: A dataset of bone X-ray images was analyzed using a newly proposed procedure. This procedure involves segregating the images into regions of interest (ROI) and non-ROI, thereby reducing data redundancy. The images were then processed to enhance both spatial and statistical features. For classification, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was employed to distinguish between osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic cases. RESULTS: The proposed method demonstrated a promising Area under the Curve (AUC) of 90.8% in diagnosing osteoporosis, benchmarking favorably against existing techniques. This signifies a high level of accuracy in distinguishing osteoporosis patients from healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method effectively distinguishes between osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic cases using bone X-ray images. BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 is a serious and highly contagious disease caused by infection with a newly discovered virus, named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). OBJECTIVE: A Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system to assist physicians to diagnose Covid-19 from chest Computed Tomography (CT) slices is modelled and experimented. METHODS: The lung tissues are segmented using Otsu's thresholding method. The Covid-19 lesions have been annotated as the Regions of Interest (ROIs), which is followed by texture and shape extraction. The obtained features are stored as feature vectors and split into 80:20 train and test sets. To choose the optimal features, Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) with Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier's accuracy is employed. A Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) classifier is trained to perform classification with the selected features. RESULTS: Comparative experimentations of the proposed system with existing eight benchmark Machine Learning classifiers using real-time dataset demonstrates that the proposed system with 88.94% accuracy outperforms the benchmark classifier's results. Statistical analysis namely, Friedman test, Mann Whitney U test and Kendall's Rank Correlation Coefficient Test has been performed which indicates that the proposed method has a significant impact on the novel dataset considered. BACKGROUND: Dental panoramic imaging plays a pivotal role in dentistry for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, correctly positioning patients can be challenging for technicians due to the complexity of the imaging equipment and variations in patient anatomy, leading to positioning errors. These errors can compromise image quality and potentially result in misdiagnoses. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to develop and validate a deep learning model capable of accurately and efficiently identifying multiple positioning errors in dental panoramic imaging. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This retrospective study used 552 panoramic images selected from a hospital Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). We defined six types of errors (E1-E6) namely, (1) slumped position, (2) chin tipped low, (3) open lip, (4) head turned to one side, (5) head tilted to one side, and (6) tongue against the palate. First, six Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models were employed to extract image features, which were then fused using transfer learning. Next, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) was applied to create a classifier for multiple positioning errors, using the fused image features. Finally, the classifier performance was evaluated using 3 indices of precision, recall rate, and accuracy. RESULTS: Experimental results show that the fusion of image features with six binary SVM classifiers yielded high accuracy, recall rates, and precision. Specifically, the classifier achieved an accuracy of 0.832 for identifying multiple positioning errors. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that six SVM classifiers effectively identify multiple positioning errors in dental panoramic imaging. The fusion of extracted image features and the employment of SVM classifiers improve diagnostic precision, suggesting potential enhancements in dental imaging efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. BACKGROUND: Hyperspectral brain tissue imaging has been recently utilized in medical research aiming to study brain science and obtain various biological phenomena of the different tissue types. However, processing high-dimensional data of hyperspectral images (HSI) is challenging due to the minimum availability of training samples. OBJECTIVE: To overcome this challenge, this study proposes applying a 3D-CNN (convolution neural network) model to process spatial and temporal features and thus improve performance of tumor image classification. METHODS: A 3D-CNN model is implemented as a testing method for dealing with high-dimensional problems. The HSI pre-processing is accomplished using distinct approaches such as hyperspectral cube creation, calibration, spectral correction, and normalization. Both spectral and spatial features are extracted from HSI. The Benchmark Vivo human brain HSI dataset is used to validate the performance of the proposed classification model. RESULTS: The proposed 3D-CNN model achieves a higher accuracy of 97% for brain tissue classification, whereas the existing linear conventional support vector machine (SVM) and 2D-CNN model yield 95% and 96% classification accuracy, respectively. Moreover, the maximum F1-score obtained by the proposed 3D-CNN model is 97.3%, which is 2.5% and 11.0% higher than the F1-scores obtained by 2D-CNN model and SVM model, respectively. CONCLUSION: A 3D-CNN model is developed for brain tissue classification by using HIS dataset. The study results demonstrate the advantages of using the new 3D-CNN model, which can achieve higher brain tissue classification accuracy than conventional 2D-CNN model and SVM model. BACKGROUND: Liver metastases is a pivotal factor of death in patients with colorectal cancer. The longitudinal data of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) during treatment can monitor and reflect treatment efficacy and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to establish a radiomic model based on longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to predict chemotherapy response in patients with CRLM. METHODS: This study retrospectively enrolled longitudinal MRI data of five modalities on 100 patients. According to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST 1.1), 42 and 58 patients were identified as responders and non-responders, respectively. First, radiomic features were computed from different modalities of image data acquired pre-treatment and early-treatment, as well as their differences (Δ). Next, the features were screened by a two-sample t-test, max-relevance and min-redundancy (mRMR), and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Then, several ensemble radiomic models that integrate support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), gradient boost decision tree (GBDT) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) were established based on voting method to predict chemotherapy response. Data samples were divided into training and verification queues using a ratio of 8:2. Finally, we used the area under ROC curve (AUC) to evaluate model performance. RESULTS: Using the ensemble model developed using featue differences (Δ) computed from the longitudinal apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) images, AUC is 0.9007±0.0436 for the training cohort. Applying to the testing cohort, AUC is 0.8958 and overall accuracy is 0.9. CONCLUSIONS: Study results demonstrate advantages and high performance of the ensemble radiomic model based on the radiomics feature difference of the longitudinal ADC images in predicting chemotherapy response, which has potential to assist treatment decision-making and improve clinical outcome. Among malignant tumors, lung cancer has the highest morbidity and fatality rates worldwide. Screening for lung cancer has been investigated for decades in order to reduce mortality rates of lung cancer patients, and treatment options have improved dramatically in recent years. Pathologists utilize various techniques to determine the stage, type, and subtype of lung cancers, but one of the most common is a visual assessment of histopathology slides. The most common subtypes of lung cancer are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, lung benign, and distinguishing between them requires visual inspection by a skilled pathologist. The purpose of this article was to develop a hybrid network for the categorization of lung histopathology images, and it did so by combining AlexNet, wavelet, and support vector machines. In this study, we feed the integrated discrete wavelet transform (DWT) coefficients and AlexNet deep features into linear support vector machines (SVMs) for lung nodule sample classification. The LC25000 Lung and colon histopathology image dataset, which contains 5,000 digital histopathology images in three categories of benign (normal cells), adenocarcinoma, and squamous carcinoma cells (both are cancerous cells) is used in this study to train and test SVM classifiers. The study results of using a 10-fold cross-validation method achieve an accuracy of 99.3% and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.99 in classifying these digital histopathology images of lung nodule samples. PURPOSE: To investigate the value of a CT-based radiomics model in identification of Crohn's disease (CD) active phase and remission phase. METHODS: CT images of 101 patients diagnosed with CD were retrospectively collected, which included 60 patients in active phase and 41 patients in remission phase. These patients were randomly divided into training group and test group at a ratio of 7 : 3. First, the lesion areas were manually delineated by the physician. Meanwhile, radiomics features were extracted from each lesion. Next, the features were selected by t-test and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression algorithm. Then, several machine learning models including random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression (LR) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms were used to construct CD activity classification models respectively. Finally, the soft-voting mechanism was used to integrate algorithms with better effects to perform two classifications of data, and the receiver operating characteristic curves were applied to evaluate the diagnostic value of the models. RESULTS: Both on the training set and the test set, AUC of the five machine learning classification models reached 0.85 or more. The ensemble soft-voting classifier obtained by using the combination of SVM, LR and KNN could better distinguish active CD from CD remission. For the test set, AUC was 0.938, and accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.903, 0.911, and 0.892, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the established radiomics model could objectively and effectively diagnose CD activity. The integrated approach has better diagnostic performance. Coronary artery diseases are one of the high-risk diseases, which occur due to the insufficient blood supply to the heart. The different types of plaques formed inside the artery leads to the blockage of the blood stream. Understanding the type of plaques along with the detection and classification of plaques supports in reducing the mortality of patients. The objective of this study is to present a novel clustering method of plaque segmentation followed by wavelet transform based feature extraction. The extracted features of all different kinds of calcified and sub calcified plaques are applied to first train and test three machine learning classifiers including support vector machine, random forest and decision tree classifiers. The bootstrap ensemble classifier then decides the best classification result through a voting method of three classifiers. A training dataset including 64 normal CTA images and 73 abnormal CTA images is used, while a testing dataset consists of 111 normal CTA images and 103 abnormal CTA images. The evaluation metrics shows better classification rate and accuracy of 97.7%. The Sensitivity and Specificity rates are 97.8% and 97.5%, respectively. As a result, our study results demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of developing and applying this new image processing and machine learning scheme to assist coronary artery plaque detection and classification. BACKGROUND: Processing Low-Intensity Medical Images (LI-MI) is difficult as outcomes are varied when it comes to manual examination, which is also a time-consuming process. OBJECTIVE: To improve the quality of low-intensity images and identify the leukemia classification by utilizing CNN-based Deep Learning (DCNN) strategy. METHODS: The strategies employed for the recognition of leukemia classifications in the advised strategy are DCNN (ResNet-34 & DenseNet-121). The histogram equalization-based adaptive gamma correction followed by guided filtering applies to study the improvement in intensity and preserve the essential details of the image. The DCNN is used as a feature extractor to help classify leukemia types. Two datasets of ASH with 520 images and ALL-IDB with 559 images are used in this study. In 1,079 images, 779 are positive cases depicting leukemia and 300 images are negative (normal) cases. Thus, to validate performance of this DCNN strategy, ASH and ALL-IDB datasets are promoted in the investigation process to classify between positive and negative images. RESULTS: The DCNN classifier yieldes the overall classification accuracy of 99.2% and 98.4%, respectively. In addition, the achieved classification specificity, sensitivity, and precision are 99.3%, 98.7%, 98.4%, and 98.9%, 98.4%,98.6% applying to two datasets, respectively, which are higher than the performance using other machine learning classifiers including support vector machine, decision tree, naive bayes, random forest and VGG-16. CONCLUSION: Ths study demonstrates that the proposed DCNN enables to improve low-intensity images and accuracry of leukemia classification, which is superior to many of other machine leaning classifiers used in this research field. Affecting millions of people all over the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of people since its beginning. Examinations also found that even if the COVID-19 patients initially survived the coronavirus, pneumonia left behind by the virus may still cause severe diseases resulting in organ failure and therefore death in the future. The aim of this study is to classify COVID-19, normal and viral pneumonia using the chest X-ray images with machine learning methods. A total of 3486 chest X-ray images from three classes were first classified by three single machine learning models including the support vector machine (SVM), logistics regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN) models, and then by a stacking model that was created by combining these 3 single models. Several performance evaluation indices including recall, precision, F-1 score, and accuracy were computed to evaluate and compare classification performance of 3 single four models and the final stacking model used in the study. As a result of the evaluations, the models namely, SVM, ANN, LR, and stacking, achieved 90.2%, 96.2%, 96.7%, and 96.9%classification accuracy, respectively. The study results indicate that the proposed stacking model is a fast and inexpensive method for assisting COVID-19 diagnosis, which can have potential to assist physicians and nurses to better and more efficiently diagnose COVID-19 infection cases in the busy clinical environment. BACKGROUND: Effective detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still difficult in clinical practice. Therefore, establishment of AD detection model by means of machine learning is of great significance to assist AD diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate and test a new detection model aiming to help doctors diagnose AD more accurately. METHODS: Diffusion tensor images and the corresponding T1w images acquired from subjects (AD = 98, normal control (NC) = 100) are used to construct brain networks. Then, 9 types features (198×90×9 in total) are extracted from the 3D brain networks by a graph theory method. Features with low correction in both groups are selected through the Pearson correlation analysis. Finally, the selected features (198×33, 198×26, 198×30, 198×42, 198×36, 198×23, 198×29, 198×14, 198×25) are separately used into train 3 machine learning classifier based detection models in which 60% of study subjects are used for training, 20% for validation and 20% for testing. RESULTS: The best detection accuracy levels of 3 models are 90%, 98% and 90% with the corresponding sensitivity of 92%, 96%, and 72% and specificity of 88%, 100% and 94% when using a random forest classifier trained with the Shortest Path Length (SPL) features (198×14), a support vector machine trained with the Degree Centrality features (198×33), and a convolution neural network trained with SPL features, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the new method and models not only improve the accuracy of detecting AD, but also avoid bias caused by the method of direct dimensionality reduction from high dimensional data. Meningioma is among the most common primary tumors of the brain. The firmness of Meningioma is a critical factor that influences operative strategy and patient counseling. Conventional methods to predict the tumor firmness rely on the correlation between the consistency of Meningioma and their preoperative MRI findings such as the signal intensity ratio between the tumor and the normal grey matter of the brain. Machine learning techniques have not been investigated yet to address the Meningioma firmness detection problem. The main purpose of this research is to couple supervised learning algorithms with typical descriptors for developing a computer-aided detection (CAD) of the Meningioma tumor firmness in MRI images. Specifically, Local Binary Patterns (LBP), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) are extracted from real labeled MRI-T2 weighted images and fed into classifiers, namely support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm to learn association between the visual properties of the region of interest and the pre-defined firm and soft classes. The learned model is then used to classify unlabeled MRI-T2 weighted images. This paper represents a baseline comparison of different features used in CAD system that intends to accurately recognize the Meningioma tumor firmness. The proposed system was implemented and assessed using a clinical dataset. Using LBP feature yielded the best performance with 95% of F-score, 87% of balanced accuracy and 0.87 of the area under ROC curve (AUC) when coupled with KNN classifier, respectively. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of radiomics analysis for differentiating benign and malignant epithelial salivary gland tumors on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). METHODS: A retrospective dataset involving 218 and 51 patients with histology-confirmed benign and malignant epithelial salivary gland tumors was used in this study. A total of 396 radiomic features were extracted from the DW images. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least-absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO) were used to select optimal radiomic features. The selected features were used to build three classification models namely, logistic regression method (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) by using a five-fold cross validation strategy on the training dataset. The diagnostic performance of each classification model was quantified by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the ROC curve (AUC) in the training and validation datasets. RESULTS: Eight most valuable features were selected by LASSO. LR and SVM models yielded optimally diagnostic performance. In the training dataset, LR and SVM yielded AUC values of 0.886 and 0.893 via five-fold cross validation, respectively, while KNN model showed relatively lower AUC (0.796). In the testing dataset, a similar result was found, where AUC values for LR, SVM, and KNN were 0.876, 0.870, and 0.791, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Classification models based on optimally selected radiomics features computed from DW images present a promising predictive value in distinguishing benign and malignant epithelial salivary gland tumors and thus have potential to be used for preoperative auxiliary diagnosis. BACKGROUND: The screening of baggage using X-ray scanners is now routine in aviation security with automatic threat detection approaches, based on 3D X-ray computed tomography (CT) images, known as Automatic Threat Recognition (ATR) within the aviation security industry. These current strategies use pre-defined threat material signatures in contrast to adaptability towards new and emerging threat signatures. To address this issue, the concept of adaptive automatic threat recognition (AATR) was proposed in previous work. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we present a solution to AATR based on such X-ray CT baggage scan imagery. This aims to address the issues of rapidly evolving threat signatures within the screening requirements. Ideally, the detection algorithms deployed within the security scanners should be readily adaptable to different situations with varying requirements of threat characteristics (e.g., threat material, physical properties of objects). METHODS: We tackle this issue using a novel adaptive machine learning methodology with our solution consisting of a multi-scale 3D CT image segmentation algorithm, a multi-class support vector machine (SVM) classifier for object material recognition and a strategy to enable the adaptability of our approach. Experiments are conducted on both open and sequestered 3D CT baggage image datasets specifically collected for the AATR study. RESULTS: Our proposed approach performs well on both recognition and adaptation. Overall our approach can achieve the probability of detection around 90% with a probability of false alarm below 20%. CONCLUSIONS: Our AATR shows the capabilities of adapting to varying types of materials, even the unknown materials which are not available in the training data, adapting to varying required probability of detection and adapting to varying scales of the threat object. BACKGROUND: Low-quality medical images may influence the accuracy of the machine learning process. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to compare accuracy of medical image classification among machine learning methods, as classification is a basic aspect of clinical image inspection. METHODS: Three types of machine learning methods were used, which include Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Convolution Neural Network (CNN). To investigate changes in accuracy related to image quality, we constructed a single dataset using two different file formats of DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). RESULTS: The JPEG format contains less color information and data capacity than the DICOM format. CNN classification was accurate for both datasets, whereas SVM and ANN accuracy decreased with the loss of data from DICOM to JPEG formats. BACKGROUND: The computer mouse is an important human-computer interaction device. But patients with physical finger disability are unable to operate this device. Surface EMG (sEMG) can be monitored by electrodes on the skin surface and is a reflection of the neuromuscular activities. Therefore, we can control limbs auxiliary equipment by utilizing sEMG classification in order to help the physically disabled patients to operate the mouse. OBJECTIVE: To develop a new a method to extract sEMG generated by finger motion and apply novel features to classify sEMG. METHODS: A window-based data acquisition method was presented to extract signal samples from sEMG electordes. Afterwards, a two-dimensional matrix image based feature extraction method, which differs from the classical methods based on time domain or frequency domain, was employed to transform signal samples to feature maps used for classification. In the experiments, sEMG data samples produced by the index and middle fingers at the click of a mouse button were separately acquired. Then, characteristics of the samples were analyzed to generate a feature map for each sample. Finally, the machine learning classification algorithms (SVM, KNN, RBF-NN) were employed to classify these feature maps on a GPU. RESULTS: The study demonstrated that all classifiers can identify and classify sEMG samples effectively. In particular, the accuracy of the SVM classifier reached up to 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The signal separation method is a convenient, efficient and quick method, which can effectively extract the sEMG samples produced by fingers. In addition, unlike the classical methods, the new method enables to extract features by enlarging sample signals' energy appropriately. BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a chronic disease with transient brain dysfunction that results from the sudden abnormal discharge of neurons in the brain. Since electroencephalogram (EEG) is a harmless and noninvasive detection method, it plays an important role in the detection of neurological diseases. However, the process of analyzing EEG to detect neurological diseases is often difficult because the brain electrical signals are random, non-stationary and nonlinear. OBJECTIVE: In order to overcome such difficulty, this study aims to develop a new computer-aided scheme for automatic epileptic seizure detection in EEGs based on multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) and support vector machine (SVM). METHODS: New scheme first extracts features from EEG by MF-DFA during the first stage. Then, the scheme applies a genetic algorithm (GA) to calculate parameters used in SVM and classify the training data according to the selected features using SVM. Finally, the trained SVM classifier is exploited to detect neurological diseases. The algorithm utilizes MLlib from library of SPARK and runs on cloud platform. RESULTS: Applying to a public dataset for experiment, the study results show that the new feature extraction method and scheme can detect signals with less features and the accuracy of the classification reached up to 99%. CONCLUSIONS: MF-DFA is a promising approach to extract features for analyzing EEG, because of its simple algorithm procedure and less parameters. The features obtained by MF-DFA can represent samples as well as traditional wavelet transform and Lyapunov exponents. GA can always find useful parameters for SVM with enough execution time. Real-time monitoring and amendment of patient position is important for the radiotherapy. However, using electronic portal imaging device (EPID) and cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) in the clinical practice generate different degrees of delay, so that they cannot achieve the purpose of real-time application. Meanwhile, a few products come with the function of the real-time monitoring and amendment, such as CyberKnife, which is too expensive for the common people. The objective of this study is to develop and test a novel independent system to monitor treatment center and amend the position of patient, which is applicable to most accelerators, based on binocular location. The system monitors the treatment center by tracking the markers attached to the patient. Once the treatment center shifts, the system uses the magic finger, which is developed to control the treatment bet automatically to adjust the treatment bed position. To improve the monitoring accuracy, we trained the data collected from the clinic based on SVM (Support Vector Machine). Thus, the training results assist users to adjust the feasible degree of the monitoring. The experiment results showed that using this new monitoring system, the monitoring resolution reached 0.5 mm, and the error ratio of the judgment was less than 1.5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
