The article explains the association between contrast sensitivity function and illumination needs when reading. It provides information on the choices of illuminated magnifiers for people with low vision. A study of the measurements of the levels of reflective illuminance of illuminated stand magnifiers is discussed. The author reveals that persons with low score on contrast sensitivity may have difficulty reading text with an older type of light emitting diode (LED) stand magnifier. He claims that further study of the relationship among contrast sensitivity function, illumination needs and preferences for low vision devices for reading are needed to better understand low-vision reading.
