We evaluated outcomes of dogs surgically treated for grade 2 or 3 medial patellar luxation (MPL) with and without trochleoplasty. A retrospective study of 63 dogs with grade 2 or 3 MPL surgically treated with or without trochleoplasty was performed. Results of radiographic evaluation were expressed numerically as degenerative joint disease score and were compared between the groups with and without trochleoplasty. The study included 7 (7/68, 10.3%) cases of reluxation and 1 case of tibial tuberosity transposition implant failure. Reluxation and complications requiring additional surgery were confirmed in 3 cases (3/47, 6.4%) in trochleoplasty group and in 1 case (1/21, 4.8%) in nontrochleoplasty group. The nontrochleoplasty group showed a shorter recovery time than the trochleoplasty group (P < 0·05). There was a significant difference in degenerative joint disease scores over time between the groups, with nontrochleoplasty group having lower scores (P < 0·05). This study suggests that surgical treatment without trochleoplasty results in favorable outcomes compared to treatment with trochleoplasty. It is not mandatory to exclude trochleoplasty when performing surgery for grade 2 or 3 MPL, but we propose that surgical treatment without trochleoplasty is one option when choosing a combination of surgical techniques.

A 7-year-old, female Beagle dog presented with a primary complaint of severe neck pain and paretic gait. A lesion was suspected between C6 and T2 on the basis of neurological examinations. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervicothoracic spine revealed herniation of disc material from the C7-T1 intervertebral space resulting in marked spinal cord compression. Hemilaminectomy was performed to treat the intervertebral disc disease at C7-T1. Treatment was effective and the clinical condition of the dog was remarkably improved. This result suggests that hemilaminectomy is an effective option for surgical treatment of intervertebral disc disease at the cervicothoracic junction in dogs.

Three small-breed dogs with grade IV medial patellar luxation were presented. In all cases, patellar luxation could not be reduced by conventional surgical techniques. Femoral shortening osteotomy was performed in all dogs to correct patellar luxation. In all the dogs, the clinical condition was remarkably improved, and following surgical procedures, no complication or recurrence was presented. Femoral shortening osteotomy is an effective treatment in small-breed dogs with medial patellar luxation associated with severe skeletal deformity.

A 4-year-old, intact female Border Collie was presented for evaluation of hearing impairment. Clinical, neurological, otoscopic and magnetic resonance imaging examinations were carried out to determine the cause of hearing loss, but no remarkable change was found. Then, brainstem auditory-evoked response test was performed to assess hearing loss, and the dog had a bilateral sensorineural deafness was revealed. Since possible causes of acquired hearing loss were ruled out by several examinations and history taking, bilateral later-onset deafness was suspected to be genetic and not congenital. This report suggested the possibility that dogs had inherited later-onset sensorineural deafness.

An 8 ㎏, 9-month-old castrated male Shiba Inu presented with a history of intermittent bilateral hind limb lameness. On examination, grade Ⅲ medial patellar luxation of the bilateral hind limbs was diagnosed. A novel surgical method involving relatively noninvasive tibial tuberosity transposition was used to restore normal alignment of the quadriceps mechanism. The procedure involved an incision on the medial cortical bone of the tibial tuberosity along the tibial crest and placement of a cortical screw on the medial side of the tibial crest to laterally transpose the tibial tuberosity. Lameness and patellar luxation of bilateral hind limbs were improved at a 3-month postoperative examination. This technique could be considered an effective treatment for medial patellar luxation in skeletal immature patients.

This is a retrospective study describing postoperative complication encountered with surgery performed in dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). During the 4-year period, 77 operations had been performed in 66 dogs for correction of MPL. The patients were surgically treated with medial soft tissue release, lateral soft tissue tightening, trochlear block recession, and/or tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT). Their prognoses were periodically evaluated for 6 months postoperatively. The failure rate was higher in revision surgery than in the first surgery, and the most common postoperative complication was migration of the tibial tuberosity fragment. The causes for the migration of the tibial tuberosity fragment were identified as the downward insertion of a surgical pin, the eccentric position of an inserted pin in the tibial tuberosity fragment, and blunt angle formation of the tibial tuberosity. It is suggested that the appropriate methods for TTT could minimize complications and lead to a good prognosis.

8년령 중성화 수컷 말티즈가 입을 열기 어려운 증상으로 내원하였다. 2M 항체 검사를 통해 저작근염을 진단하였다. 코르티코스테로이드로 처치 후 턱관절의 가동범위가 증가하였고, 처치 5개월 후에는 거의 정상으로 돌아왔다. 저작근염이 발생한 개에서 초기 발견 및 적극적인 면역억제 치료는 예후 향상을 위해 필요한 것으로 사료된다. 【A 8-year-old, castrated male Maltese with difficulty in opening his mouth was presented. Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) was diagnosed by 2M antibody test. After treatment of MMM with corticosteroids, range of jaw motion improved and was almost normal at 5 months. In dogs with MMM, early detection and aggressive immunosuppressive therapy are required to improve the prognosis.】
