Post Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary continental ecosystems of Europe host a distinctive assemblage of derived neosuchians related to modern semi-aquatic lineages, including the alligatoroid Diplocynodon and the crocodyloid Asiatosuchus but also a less well-understood group known as the Planocraniidae. Yet, uniquely in its faunal composition, Europe also preserves some of the last representatives of Notosuchia, a group that previously underwent a successful radiation in terrestrial ecosystems of the Cretaceous, especially in Gondwana. Although Europe harbored a few members of Sebecosuchia during the Cretaceous, their affinities with post-K–Pg forms is not ascertained, in part due to their rare and fragmentary nature on both sides of the stratigraphic boundary. Paleogene European sebecosuchians have been reported from the Eocene of France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. Resolving their phylogenetic position may shed light on their suspected Gondwanan affinities. Based on new cranial and postcranial remains, we provide a description of the most complete and largest European sebecosuchian to date from the middle Eocene (Bartonian) of Issel and Réalmont, southern France. Dentaneosuchus gen. nov. is proposed to designate the taxon originally described as Atacisaurus crassiproratus. A phylogenetic analysis recovers Dentaneosuchus crassiproratus as the basalmost branching member of Sebecidae, a clade otherwise known from abundant specimens from the Paleogene and Miocene of South America. Among post-K–Pg sebecids, Dentaneosuchus crassiproratus rivalled in size with Barinasuchus arveloi from the Miocene of Venezuela, demonstrating that sebecids achieved the status of apex predators in terrestrial ecosystems of both Europe and South America. Caviomorphs are the neotropical hystricognathous rodents (Ctenohystrica: Hystricognathi: Caviomorpha). Octodontoidea are today the richest and most speciose clade of caviomorphs. Their fossil record also reveals a wide array of extinct species, including Acarechimys, a taxon with a widespread South American distribution and extensive temporal range. This genus comprises at least five species documented in deposits ranging from the late Oligocene to the Middle Miocene. Here, we report the discovery of a new species of Acarechimys from Upper Miocene deposits of the Envira River (PRE06 outcrop), situated in the Acre State, western Brazilian Amazonia. The new species differs from the other species of the genus in having lower molars with a strong posterior arm of the metaconid, the presence of a mesostylid (usually prominent) and a neomesolophid forwardly directed and connected to the metalophulid I on m1 but not on m2–3, and the absence of posterior arm of the protoconid. This taxon represents the youngest known species of the Acarechimys lineage to date. Its occurrence in Western Amazonia strengthens support for the hypothesis that South American rodent lineages survived longer during the Neogene at low latitudes than in the southern regions of the continent. Megadolodinae is a clade of tropical bunodont litopterns that includes three previously recognized species from Miocene fossil sites from northern South America. Here, we report an additional occurrence of Megadolodus molariformis from the Middle Miocene exposures at the Fitzcarrald arch (Peruvian Amazonia), based on dental material, which represents the southernmost record of the clade. This discovery further increases the faunal similarity between Fitzcarrald and the coeval La Venta fauna of Colombia. Given the convergent evolution of the bunodont dentition of megadolodines with suoids (Old World pigs and New World peccaries), we tested the hypothesis of frugivory in megadolodines with a mesowear angle approach using modern pigs and peccaries. These analyses differentiate the diet of modern suoids and suggest that megadolodines had a more abrasive diet than most of these taxa, except for the grazing warthogs. The dentition of megadolodines shows similar levels of abrasion to modern babirusas, thereby suggesting that the latter may represent an appropriate modern analog. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
