Despite growing interest in experience sharing among leisure travelers, there is still limited research concerning the role of travel experience sharing on leisure traveler's life satisfaction. The main objective of this research is to test the moderation effects of experience sharing during and after leisure travel on the bottom-up spillover process of tourists' leisure travel satisfaction–life satisfaction hierarchy. The positive effect of holiday trip motivation fulfillment on overall holiday trip satisfaction is hypothesized to be amplified by on-site experience sharing (e.g., uploading holiday pictures or videos to social media platforms while traveling). Also, the positive effect of holiday trip satisfaction on holiday travelers' subjective well-being is hypothesized to be amplified by posttrip experience sharing (e.g., publishing blog posts or travel reports online post trip). We used data from a large-scale social survey in Germany (N = 2,198) and the results confirmed the hypotheses. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article demonstrates how selected environmental consequences of tourism consumption relating to carbon emissions and waste can be quantified using a tourism satellite account (TSA), and an environmental module associated with an input-output framework. We move beyond the basic identification of the environmental effects of tourism consumption and seek to measure them. We show the types of information that can be derived from the framework, the applicative difficulties of reconciling tourism consumption to environmental outcomes, and explore the practical usage of the framework adopted. Economic impact analysis is a broad category of analytic methods including some of the most common tools for travel and tourism planning. The consensus of recent work appears to be that economic impact analysis can be an important element of the tourism planner's toolbox but also can be subject to considerable risk of misuse and misinterpretation. This article highlights many of the issues involved in the appropriate use and interpretation of economic impact analysis and summarizes the contributions of articles included in this special issue. These articles address a wide range of topics, including the measurement of benefits and costs, modeling of indirect and induced impacts, and the testing, validation, and use of impact estimates. Few tourism researchers have questioned input-output model results as the end point of economic impact analysis, with findings centered on direct, indirect, and induced impacts. An extension of input-output analysis introduced in this study is occupation-based modeling. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate occupation-based modeling as a means of illustrating job categories affected and associated wages generated by tourist spending at a sport event. Occupation-based modeling begins with an input-output model, with selected results applied to employment and wage data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A youth softball tournament was analyzed to illustrate the movement from input-output modeling to occupation-based modeling. Examples of long- and short-term interpretations of resulting estimates are included. Occupation-based modeling allows for a thorough understanding of the specific types of jobs and resulting wage income that accompany a change in final demand to an economy due to a tourism initiative. This article outlines a standardized method for assessing direct economic expenditures and impacts associated with tourist events. The method addresses critical and often overlooked methodological issues that distinguish analysis of impacts from tourism in general and analysis of impacts from tourist events. These issues involve a common failure to account for sources, origins, destinations, and causes of expenditures. The corresponding errors in impact estimation will carry through into subsequent input-output or multiplier models and are of particular significance when one considers impacts of tourism events in regions dominated by other tourist sites or attractions, such as heavily visited coastal communities. Implications of the framework for impact estimation are illustrated using examples drawn from recent Rhode Island tourist events, including the 1997 Newport Folk Festival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a data-gathering methodology designed to be used with open- access hallmark events to defect the tourism spending associated with such events. The methodology includes a triangulation estimate of spectator numbers, which when com bined with participant numbers and the respective expenditure records provides an overall estimate of tourist direct spending. The methodology is tested on a regional sports tournament and reveals that even a relatively small-scale hallmark event can generate considerable tourist expenditure. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between unplanned or im pulse attraction visits and expenditures by travel-through visitors to Nebraska. Of 1,424 travel-through visitors to Nebraska who entered the state with no plans to visit an attrac tion, 136 (9.6%) made one or more unplanned or impulse attraction visits. As compared to travel-through visitors who did not make an attraction visit, these individuals spent sig nificantly more money in the state. Using a log-linear regression model, the number of attraction visits was significantly related to expenditures, even when controlling for length of stay and party size. As economists pay increasing attention to short-term entertainment events, it is constructive to evaluate the current methodology employed in studies. This study points out that the basic issue addressed by studies is the difference between what did happen and what might have happened—a difficult subject. The 1987 People and Physical Environment Research Conference, 1987, under the theme of the Effects of Hallmark Events on Cities was held in Perth, Western Australia, between June 15-19, 1987. Academics, government officials, recreation and tourism planners and members of private industry from around the Pacific basin gathered at the Observation City Resort Hotel to discuss the nature and impacts of hallmark events. The Conference was organized by the Centre for Urban Research, University of Western Australia. The Conference was opened by the West Australian Minister of Planning, Hon. R. Pearce MLA, who highlighted the importance of hallmark events in tourism and regional planning. The conference was organized around four main areas: (1) sporting events, (2) cultural events/economic studies, (3) urban events/studies, and (4) general theoretical studies.
