Introduction: Communication is one of the main foundations of providing care. Nurses have encountered patients from different languages due to globalization and mobilities within and between countries. This study aimed to explore the Iranian pediatric nurses' experiences in providing care for children of different language backgrounds. Methodology: In this conventional qualitative content analysis study, 15 pediatric nurses were selected through purposive sampling from four specialty pediatric hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Data were collected via in-depth semistructured face-to-face interviews and concurrently analyzed via conventional content analysis. Results: Data analysis resulted in 132 primary codes, which were reduced to 95 during constant comparison and categorized into 34 subcategories, six main categories, and the main theme emerging from the categories was "language as a barrier in providing effective nursing care." Discussion: This study suggests that language differences between pediatric nurses and hospitalized children may make nursing care less effective and act as a barrier to achieving patient care goals. Introduction: Language barriers challenge patient- and family-centered care. Literature guiding pediatric nurses caring for patients and families with limited English proficiency in the inpatient setting is nonexistent. The purposes of this phenomenological study were to understand pediatric nurses' experiences in caring for patients and families with limited English proficiency and to explore how nurses navigate the communication gap. Method: A purposive sample of 15 pediatric Registered Nurses at a large urban children's medical center participated in face-to-face semistructured interviews. Verbatim transcribed interviews were analyzed line-by-line and categorized into themes. Results: Themes included personal framework of care, consequences of caring, starting off right, nurse sensing, verbal/nonverbal methods, and interpreters. Discussion: Nurses did not perceive differences in task-oriented care; they described compromised personal paradigms, held negative feelings, and utilized verbal/nonverbal communication methods. Purpose: This study investigated secondary traumatic stress and its relationship to burnout among nurses working at a Turkish hospital. Design: A mixed-methods design included a cross-sectional survey administering the Professional Quality of Life instrument and Maslach Burnout Inventory to 106 nurses. Interviews with a subgroup of eight participants explored nurses’ experiences and coping strategies related to caring for chronically ill pediatric patients. Results: High risk levels of secondary traumatic stress existed among 40.6% participants, and those over the age of 40 years were at greater risk. Two main interview themes emerged that identified (a) consequences and (b) coping strategies while caring for chronically ill children. Nurses experience emotional burdens and may purposefully distance themselves from chronically ill children. Social support from nurse colleagues and spiritual beliefs assist coping. Implications: Workplaces should acknowledge stressors inherent in chronic pediatric nursing care. Environments that welcome spiritual practices and actively encourage social support could address job hazards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
